We study particle dynamics in a space-time invariant under the $DISIM_b(2)$ group - the deformation of the $ISIM(2)$ symmetry group of very special relativity. We find that the Lorentz violation leads to the creation of higher order (hidden) symmetries which are connected to those broken at the space-time level. Through the perspective of the conserved quantities of the special relativistic case the Lorentz violation is linked to specific non-commutative relations in phase-space.
In this thesis we study different aspects of noncommutativity in quantum mechanics, field theory and gravity. We give particular emphasis on the underlying symmetries of these theories. Deformations of usual symmetries like the external space time symmetries and the internal gauge symmetry in noncommutative theories are analyzed in detail.
A Hamiltonian formulation of gauge symmetries on noncommutative ($θ$ deformed) spaces is discussed. Both cases- star deformed gauge transformation with normal coproduct and undeformed gauge transformation with twisted coproduct- are considered. While the structure of the gauge generator is identical in either case, there is a difference in the computation of the graded Poisson brackets that yield the gauge transformations. Our analysis provides a novel interpretation of the twisted coproduct for gauge transformations.
We construct discrete symmetry transformations for deformed relativistic kinematics based on group valued momenta. We focus on the specific example of kappa-deformations of the Poincare algebra with associated momenta living on (a sub-manifold of) de Sitter space. Our approach relies on the description of quantum states constructed from deformed kinematics and the observable charges associated with them. The results we present provide the first step towards the analysis of experimental bounds on the deformation parameter kappa to be derived via precision measurements of discrete symmetries and…
We study the general deformed conformal-Poincare (Galilean) symmetries consistent with relativistic (nonrelativistic) canonical noncommutative spaces. In either case we obtain deformed generators, containing arbitrary free parameters, which close to yield new algebraic structures. We show that a particular choice of these parameters reproduces the undeformed algebra. The modified coproduct rules and the associated Hopf algebra are also obtained. Finally, we show that for the choice of parameters leading to the undeformed algebra, the deformations are represented by twist functions.
We give a pedagogical introduction to the basics of deformations of relativistic symmetries and the Hilbert spaces of free quantum fields built as their representations. We focus in particular on the example of a $κ$-deformed scalar quantum field for which the generators of spatial translations that label the field modes act according to a deformed Leibnitz rule. We explore the richer structure of the $κ$-Fock space and point out possible physical consequences of the deformation.
We demonstrate that the planar real-$β$-deformed Super-Yang--Mills theory possesses an infinitely-dimensional Yangian symmetry algebra and thus is classically integrable. This is achieved by the introduction of the twisted coproduct which allows us to lift the apparent $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry first to the full $\mathcal{N}=4$ symmetry of the parent $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM theory, and subsequently to its Yangian.
We study the nonrelativistic limit of the motion of a classical particle in a model of deformed special relativity and of the corresponding generalized Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations, and show that they reproduce nonrelativistic classical and quantum mechanics, respectively, although the rest mass of a particle no longer coincides with its inertial mass. This fact clarifies the meaning of the different definitions of velocity of a particle available in DSR literature. Moreover, the rest mass of particles and antiparticles differ, breaking the CPT invariance. This effect is close to observati…
A unified description of the relationship between the Hamiltonian structure of a large class of integrable hierarchies of equations and W-algebras is discussed. The main result is an explicit formula showing that the former can be understood as a deformation of the latter.
We argue that recently proposed by Amelino-Camelia et all [1,2] so-called doubly special relativity (DSR), with deformed boost transformations identical with the formulae for $κ$-deformed kinematics in bicrossproduct basis is a classical special relativity in nonlinear disguise. The choice of symmetric composition law for deformed fourmomenta as advocated in [1, 2] implies that DSR is obtained by considering nonlinear fourmomenta basis of classical Poincaré algebra and it does not lead to noncommutative space-time. We also show how to construct large two classes of doubly special relativity th…
The structure and properties of possible $q$-Minkowski spaces is discussed, and the corresponding non-commutative differential calculi are developed in detail and compared with already existing proposals. This is done by stressing its covariance properties as described by appropriate reflection equations. Some isomorphisms among the space-time and derivative algebras are demonstrated, and their representations are described briefly. Finally, some physical consequences and open problems are discussed.
Deformed special relativity is embedded in deformed general relativity using the methods of canonical relativity and loop quantum gravity. Phase-space dependent deformations of symmetry algebras then appear, which in some regimes can be rewritten as non-linear Poincare algebras with momentum-dependent deformations of commutators between boosts and time translations. In contrast to deformed special relativity, the deformations are derived for generators with an unambiguous physical role, following from the relationship between canonical constraints of gravity with stress-energy components. The …
The phase space of a classical particle in DSR contains de Sitter space as the space of momenta. We start from the standard relativistic particle in five dimensions with an extra constraint and reduce it to four dimensional DSR by imposing appropriate gauge fixing. We analyze some physical properties of the resulting theories like the equations of motion, the form of Lorentz transformations and the issue of velocity. We also address the problem of the origin and interpretation of different bases in DSR.
Within the spirit of Dirac's canonical quantization, noncommutative spacetime field theories are introduced by making use of the reparametrization invariance of the action and of an arbitrary non-canonical symplectic structure. This construction implies that the constraints need to be deformed, resulting in an automatic Drinfeld twisting of the generators of the symmetries associated with the reparametrized theory. We illustrate our procedure for the case of a scalar field in 1+1- spacetime dimensions, but it can be readily generalized to arbitrary dimensions and arbitrary types of fields.
The star product technique translates the framework of local fields on noncommutative space-time into nonlocal fields on standard space-time. We consider the example of fields on $κ$- deformed Minkowski space, transforming under $κ$-deformed Poincaré group with noncommutative parameters. By extending the star product to the tensor product of functions on $κ$-deformed Minkowski space and $κ$-deformed Poincaré group we represent the algebra of noncommutative parameters of deformed relativistic symmetries by functions on classical Poincaré group.
Generators of the super-Poincaré algebra in the non-(anti)commutative superspace are represented using appropriate higher-derivative operators defined in this quantum superspace. Also discussed are the analogous representations of the conformal and superconformal symmetry generators in the deformed spaces. This construction is obtained by generalizing the recent work of Wess et al on the Poincaré generators in the $θ$-deformed Minkowski space, or by using the substitution rules we derived on the basis of the phase-space structures of non-(anti)commutative-space variables. Even with the nonzero…
A argument is described for how deformed or doubly special relativity may arise in the semiclassical limit of a quantum theory of gravity. We consider a generic quantum theory of gravity coupled to matter, from which we use only the assumption that a Hamiltonian constraint is imposed. We study circumstances in which Lambda, G and hbar all may be separately neglected, but there may arise terms in the ratio of particle energies to the Planck mass which are small but measurable. Such cases include probes of an energy dependent speed of light such as are possible in experiments such as MAGIC and G…
By studying the notion of a fundamentally minimal length scale in asymptotically safe gravity we find that a specific version of deformed special relativity (DSR) naturally arises in this approach. We then consider two thought experiments to examine the interpretation of the scenario and discuss similarities and differences to other approaches to DSR.
We show that $T \bar T, J \bar T$ and $J T_a$ - deformed classical CFTs possess an infinite set of symmetries that take the form of a field-dependent generalization of two-dimensional conformal transformations. If, in addition, the seed CFTs possess an affine $U(1)$ symmetry, we show that it also survives in the deformed theories, again in a field-dependent form. These symmetries can be understood as the infinitely-extended conformal and $U(1)$ symmetries of the underlying two-dimensional CFT, seen through the prism of the "dynamical coordinates" that characterise each of these deformations. W…
We describe the deformed Poincare-conformal symmetries implying the covariance of the noncommutative space obeying Snyder's algebra. Relativistic particle models invariant under these deformed symmetries are presented. A gauge (reparametrisation) independent derivation of Snyder's algebra from such models is given. The algebraic transformations relating the deformed symmetries with the usual (undeformed) ones are provided. Finally, an alternative form of an action yielding Snyder's algebra is discussed where the mass of a relativistic particle gets identified with the inverse of the noncommuta…
In this letter we outline some reasons for considering a quantum field theory symmetric under quantum groups and we sketch some results obtained with collaborators in the k-Poincare framework. We deal with this latter as a toy model towards an effective and low-energy theory of quantum gravity, the new physically relevant effects of which are Planck-scale suppressed.
We analyse the quantum geometry of 3-dimensional deformed special relativity (DSR) and the notion of spacetime points in such a context, identified with coherent states that minimize the uncertainty relations among spacetime coordinates operators. We construct this system of coherent states in both the Riemannian and Lorentzian case, and study their properties and their geometric interpretation.
Deformed Special Relativity (DSR) is obtained by imposing a maximal energy to Special Relativity and deforming the Lorentz symmetry (more exactly the Poincaré symmetry) to accommodate this requirement. One can apply the same procedure deforming the Galilean symmetry in order to impose a maximal speed (the speed of light). This leads to a non-commutative space structure, to the expected deformations of composition of speed and conservation of energy-momentum. In doing so, one runs into most of the ambiguities that one stumbles onto in the DSR context. However, this time, Special Relativity is t…
Deformed Special Relativity (DSR) is a generalization of Special Relativity based on a deformed Minkowski space, i.e. a four-dimensional space-time with metric coefficients depending on the energy. We show that, in the DSR framework, it is possible to derive the value of the electron mass from the space-time geometry via the experimental knowledge of the parameter of local Lorentz invariance breakdown, and of the Minkowskian threshold energy $E_{0,em}$ for the electromagnetic interaction.
We reconsider in details the Dirac equation in the context of the Magueijo-Smolin approach to the Doubly Special Relativity. Starting from the deformed dispersion relation we obtain the Dirac equation in momentum space, allowing us to achieve a more in-depth study of its semiclassical approach. Finally by means of a deformed correspondence principle we gain access to an equation in the position space.
In this paper we will study non-abelian Chern-Simons theory on a deformed superspace. We will deform the superspace in such a way that it includes the noncommutativity between bosonic and fermionic coordinates. We will first analyse the BRST and the anti-BRST symmetries of the Chern-Simons theory on this deformed superspace. Then we will analyse the extended BRST and the extended anti-BRST symmetries of this theory in the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism. Finally, we will express these extended BRST and extended anti-BRST symmetries in extended superspace formalism by introducing new Grassman…
We study the quantization of a linear scalar field, whose symmetries are described by the kappa-Poincare' Hopf-algebra, via deformed Fock space construction. The one-particle sector of the theory exhibits a natural (planckian) cut-off for the field modes. At the multi-particle level the non-trivial co-algebra structure of kappa-Poincare' leads to a deformed bosonization in the construction of Fock space states. These physical states carry energy-momentum charges which are divergenceless and obey a deformed dispersion relation.
Yang-Baxter type models are integrable deformations of integrable field theories, such as the principal chiral model on a Lie group $G$ or $σ$-models on (semi-)symmetric spaces $G/F$. The deformation has the effect of breaking the global $G$-symmetry of the original model, replacing the associated set of conserved charges by ones whose Poisson brackets are those of the $q$-deformed Poisson-Hopf algebra $\mathscr U_q(\mathfrak g)$. Working at the Hamiltonian level, we show how this $q$-deformed Poisson algebra originates from a Poisson-Lie $G$-symmetry. The theory of Poisson-Lie groups and thei…
Conformally deformed special relativity is mathematically consistent example of a theory with two observer independent scales. As compare with recent DSR proposals, it is formulated starting from the position space. In this work we propose interpretation of Lorentz boosts of the model as transformations among accelerated observers. We point further that the model can be considered as relativistic version of MOND program and thus may be interesting in context of dark matter problem.
It has been recently shown that classical $J\bar T$ - deformed CFTs possess an infinite-dimensional Witt-Kač-Moody symmetry, generated by certain field-dependent coordinate and gauge transformations. On a cylinder, however, the equal spacing of the descendants' energies predicted by such a symmetry algebra is inconsistent with the known finite-size spectrum of $J\bar T$ - deformed CFTs. Also, the associated quantum symmetry generators do not have a proper action on the Hilbert space. In this article, we resolve this tension by finding a new set of (classical) conserved charges, whose action is…
Families of vector-like deformed relativistic quantum phase spaces and corresponding realizations are analyzed. Method for general construction of star product is presented. Corresponding twist, expressed in terms of phase space coordinates, in Hopf algebroid sense is presented. General linear realizations are considered and corresponding twists, in terms of momenta and Poincaré-Weyl generators or $\mathfrak{gl}(n)$ generators, are constructed and R-matrix is discussed. Classification of linear realizations leading to vector-like deformed phase spaces is given. There are 3 types of spaces: $i)…
We derive a scalar field theory of the deformed special relativity type, living on non-commutative kappa-Minkowski spacetime and with a kappa-deformed Poincare symmetry, from the SO(4,1) group field theory defining the transition amplitudes for topological BF-theory in 4 space-time dimensions. This is done at a non-perturbative level of the spin foam formalism working directly with the group field theory (GFT). We show that matter fields emerge from the fundamental model as perturbations around a specific phase of the GFT, corresponding to a solution of the fundamental equations of motion, and…

We extend a recent approach to Deformed Special Relativity based on deformed dispersion laws, entailing modified Lorentz transformations and, at the same time, noncommutative geometry and intrinsically discrete spacetime. In so doing we obtain the explicit form of the modified Lorentz transformations for a special class of modified momentum-energy relations often found in literature and arising from elementary particle physics. Actually, our theory looks as a very simple and natural extension of special relativity to include a momentum cut-off at the Planck scale. In particular, the new Lorent…
We shall outline two ways of introducing the modification of Einstein's relativistic symmetries of special relativity theory - the Poincaré symmetries. The most complete way of introducing the modifications is via the noncocommutative Hopf-algebraic structure describing quantum symmetries. Two types of quantum relativistic symmetries are described, one with constant commutator of quantum Minkowski space coordinates ($θ_{μν}$-deformation) and second with Lie-algebraic structure of quantum space-time, introducing so-called $κ$-deformation. The third fundamental constant of Nature - fundamental m…
We consider two new classes of twisted D=4 quantum Poincaré symmetries described as the dual pairs of noncocommutative Hopf algebras. Firstly we investigate a two-parameter class of twisted Poincaré algebras which provide the examples of Lie-algebraic noncommutativity of the translations. The corresponding associative star-products and new deformed Lie-algebraic Minkowski spaces are introduced. We discuss further the twist deformations of Poincaré symmetries generated by the twist with its carrier in Lorentz algebra. We describe corresponding deformed Poincaré group which provides the quadrati…
We argue that a (slightly) curved space-time probed with a finite resolution, equivalently a finite minimal length, is effectively described by a flat non-commutative space-time. More precisely, a small cosmological constant (so a constant curvature) leads the kappa-deformed Poincaré flat space-time of deformed special relativity (DSR) theories. This point of view eventually helps understanding some puzzling features of DSR. It also explains how DSR can be considered as an effective flat (low energy) limit of a (true) quantum gravity theory. This point of view leads us to consider a possible g…
We study the deformed conformal-Poincare symmetries consistent with the Snyder--de Sitter space. A relativistic particle model invariant under these deformed symmetries is given. This model is used to provide a gauge independent derivation of the Snyder--de Sitter algebra. Our results are valid in the leading order in the parameters appearing in the model.
We present a construction of $κ$-deformed complex scalar field theory with the objective of shedding light on the way discrete symmetries and CPT invariance are affected by the deformation. Our starting point is the observation that, in order to have an appropriate action of Lorentz symmetries on antiparticle states, these should be described by four-momenta living on the complement of the portion of de Sitter group manifold to which $κ$-deformed particle four-momenta belong. Once the equations of motions are properly worked out from the deformed action we obtain that particle and antiparticle…
We show how the Weyl quantum walk derived from principles in Ref. [1], enjoying a nonlinear Lorentz symmetry of dynamics, allows one to introduce Hopf algebras for position and momentum of the emerging particle. We focus on two special models of Hopf algebras--the usual Poincaré and the k-Poincaré algebras.
We recently proposed an integrable q-deformation of the AdS_5 x S^5 superstring action. Here we give details on the hamiltonian origin and construction of this deformation. The procedure is a generalization of the one previously developed for deforming principal chiral and symmetric space sigma-models. We also show that the original psu(2,2|4) symmetry is replaced in the deformed theory by a classical analog of the quantum group U_q(psu(2,2|4)) with q real. The relation between q and the deformation parameter entering the action is given. The framework used to derive the deformation also enabl…
We consider several classes of symmetries of the Dirac Hamiltonian in 3+1 dimensions, with axially-deformed scalar and vector potentials. The symmetries include the known pseudospin and spin limits and additional symmetries which occur when the potentials depend on different variables. Supersymmetries are observed within each class and the corresponding charges are identified.
It has previously been proven that $T\bar T$ - deformed CFTs possess Virasoro $\times$ Virasoro symmetry at the full quantum level, whose generators are obtained by simply transporting the original CFT generators along the $T\bar T$ flow. In this article, we explicitly solve the corresponding flow equation in the classical limit, obtaining an infinite set of conserved charges whose action on phase space is well-defined even when the theory is on a compact space. The field-dependent coordinates that are characteristic of the $T\bar T$ deformation are shown to emerge unambiguously from the flow.…
We consider the general gauge theory with a closed irreducible gauge algebra possessing the non-anomalous global (super)symmetry in the case when the gauge fixing procedure violates the global invariance of classical action. The theory is quantized in the framework of BRST-BV approach in the form of functional integral over all fields of the configuration space. It is shown that the global symmetry transformations are deformed in the process of quantization and the full quantum action is invariant under such deformed global transformations in the configuration space. The deformed global transf…
Erik Verlinde recently proposed an idea about the thermodynamic origin of gravity. Though this is a beautiful idea which may resolve many long standing problems in the theories of gravity, it also raises many other problems. In this article I will comment on some of the problems of Verlinde's proposal with special emphasis on the thermodynamical origin of the principle of relativity. It is found that there is a large group of hidden symmetries of thermodynamics which contains the Poincare group of the spacetime for which space is emergent. This explains the thermodynamic origin of the principl…
We describe three ways of modifying the relativistic Heisenberg algebra - first one not linked with quantum symmetries, second and third related with the formalism of quantum groups. The third way is based on the identification of generalized deformed phase space with the semidirect product of two dual Hopf algebras describing quantum group of motions and the corresponding quantum Lie algebra. As an example the $κ$-deformation of relativistic Heisenberg algebra is given, determined by $κ$-deformed D=4 Poincaré symmetries.
We examine the transformation of particle trajectories in models with deformations of Special Relativity that have an energy-dependent and observer-independent speed of light. These transformations necessarily imply that the notion of what constitutes the same space-time event becomes dependent on the observer's inertial frame. To preserve observer-independence, the such arising nonlocality should not be in conflict with our knowledge of particle interactions. This requirement allows us to derive strong bounds on deformations of Special Relativity and rule out a modification to first order in …
In this thesis, I investigate how to construct a self-consistent model of deformed general relativity using canonical methods and metric variables. The specific deformation of general covariance is predicted by some studies into loop quantum cosmology. I firstly find the minimally-deformed model for a scalar-tensor theory, thereby establishing a classical reference point, and investigate the cosmological effects of a non-minimal coupled scalar field. By treating the deformation perturbatively, I derive the deformed gravitational action which includes the nearest order of curvature corrections.…
The dynamical algebra of the q-deformed harmonic oscillator is constructed. As a result, we find the free deformed Hamiltonian as well as the Hamiltonian of the deformed oscillator as a complicated, momentum dependent interaction Hamiltonian in terms of the usual canonical variables. Furthermore we construct a well-defined algebra SU$_q$(1,1) with consistent conjugation properties and comultiplication. We obtain non lowest weight representations of this algebra.
A spacetime interpretation of deformed relativity symmetry groups was recently proposed by resorting to Finslerian geometries, seen as the outcome of a continuous limit endowed with first order corrections from the quantum gravity regime. In this work we further investigate such connection between deformed algebras and Finslerian geometries by showing that the Finsler geometries associated to the generalisation of the Poincaré group (the so called $κ$-Poincaré Hopf algebra) are maximally symmetric spacetimes which are also of the Berwald type: Finslerian spacetimes for which the connections ar…
In this article we elaborate on a recently proposed interpretation of DSR as an effective measurement theory in the presence of non-negligible (albeit small) quantum gravitational fluctuations. We provide several heuristic arguments to explain how such a new theory can emerge and discuss the possible observational consequences of this framework.
Extending the commutator algebra of quantum $κ$-Poincaré symmetry to the whole of the phase space, and assuming that this algebra is to be covariant under action of deformed Lorentz generators, we derive the transformation properties of positions under the action of deformed boosts. It turns out that these transformations leave invariant the quadratic form in the position space, which is the Minkowski metric and that the boosts saturate. The issues of massless and massive particles motion, as well as time dilatation and length contraction in this new framework are also studied.
In ${\cal N}=5, 6, 8$ supergravities there are hidden symmetries of equations of motion, described by duality groups $SU(1,5), \, SO^*(12), \, E_{7(7)}$ respectively. UV divergences and known candidate counterterms violate the deformed duality symmetry current conservation. Extra higher derivative terms in the action are required to restore duality. We study the effect of a two-vector part of the counterterm for ${\cal N}\geq 5$ supergravities using the universality of the symplectic structure of extended supergravities. We construct a compact form of a deformed action with infinite number of …
We argue that the natural framework for embedding the ideas of deformed, or doubly, special relativity (DSR) into a curved spacetime is a generalisation of Einstein-Cartan theory, considered by Stelle and West. Instead of interpreting the noncommuting "spacetime coordinates" of the Snyder algebra as endowing spacetime with a fundamentally noncommutative structure, we are led to consider a connection with torsion in this framework. This may lead to the usual ambiguities in minimal coupling. We note that observable violations of charge conservation induced by torsion should happen on a time scal…
We investigate how deformations of special relativity in momentum space can be extended to position space in a consistent way, such that the dimensionless contraction between wave-vector and coordinate-vector remains invariant. By using a parametrization in terms of an energy dependent speed of light, and an energy dependent Planck's constant, we are able to formulate simple requirements that completely determine the active transformations in position space. These deviate from the standard transformations for large velocities of the observed object. Some examples are discussed, and it is shown…
We describe the classical $o(3,2)$ $r$-matrices as generating the quantum deformations of either D=3 conformal algebra with mass-like deformation parameters or D=4 $AdS$ algebra with dimensionless deformation parameters. We describe the quantization of classical $o(3,2)$ $r$-matrices via Drinfeld twist method which locates the deformation in the coalgebra sector. Further we obtain the quantum $o(3,2)$ algebra in a convenient Hopf algebra form by considering suitable deformation maps from classical to deformed $o(3,2)$ algebra basis. It appears that if we pass from $κ$-deformed D =3 conformal a…
Spacetime geometry is twisted (deformed) into noncommutative spacetime geometry, where functions and tensors are now star-multiplied. Consistently, spacetime diffeomorhisms are twisted into noncommutative diffeomorphisms. Their deformed Lie algebra structure and that of infinitesimal Poincare' transformations is defined and explicitly constructed. This allows to construct a noncommutative theory of gravity.
Deformed relativistic kinematics is a framework which captures effects, that are expected from particles and fields propagating on a quantum spacetime, effectively. They are formulated in terms of a modified dispersion relation and a modified momentum conservation equation. In this work we use Finsler geometry to formulate deformed relativistic kinematics in terms of particle velocities. The relation between the Finsler geometric velocity dependent formulation and the original momentum dependent formulation allows us to construct deformed Lorentz transformations between arbitrary frames. Moreo…
In this paper we have studied the nature of kinematical and dynamical laws in $κ$-Minkowski spacetime from a new perspective: the canonical phase space approach. We discuss a particular form of $κ$-Minkowski phase space algebra that yields the $κ$-extended finite Lorentz transformations derived in \cite{kim}. This is a particular form of a Deformed Special Relativity model that admits a modified energy-momentum dispersion law as well as noncommutative $κ$-Minkowski phase space. We show that this system can be completely mapped to a set of phase space variables that obey canonical (and {\it{not…
