Erik Verlinde recently proposed an idea about the thermodynamic origin of gravity. Though this is a beautiful idea which may resolve many long standing problems in the theories of gravity, it also raises many other problems. In this article I will comment on some of the problems of Verlinde's proposal with special emphasis on the thermodynamical origin of the principle of relativity. It is found that there is a large group of hidden symmetries of thermodynamics which contains the Poincare group of the spacetime for which space is emergent. This explains the thermodynamic origin of the principle of relativity.
We study particle dynamics in a space-time invariant under the $DISIM_b(2)$ group - the deformation of the $ISIM(2)$ symmetry group of very special relativity. We find that the Lorentz violation leads to the creation of higher order (hidden) symmetries which are connected to those broken at the space-time level. Through the perspective of the conserved quantities of the special relativistic case the Lorentz violation is linked to specific non-commutative relations in phase-space.
Recent work has revealed intriguing connections between a Belinsky-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz-type analysis of spacelike singularities in General Relativity and certain infinite dimensional Lie algebras, and in particular the `maximally extended' hyperbolic Kac--Moody algebra E10. In this essay we argue that these results may lead to an entirely new understanding of the (quantum) nature of space(-time) at the Planck scale, and hence -- via an effective `de-emergence' of space near a singularity -- to a novel mechanism for achieving background independence in quantum gravity.
In this article, we utilize the insights gleaned from our recent formulation of space(-time), as well as dynamical picture of quantum mechanics and its classical approximation, from the relativity symmetry perspective in order to push further into the realm of the proposed fundamental relativity symmetry $SO(2,4)$ of our quantum relativity project. We explicitly trace how the diverse actors in this story change through various contraction limits, paying careful attention to the relevant physical units, in order to place all known relativity theories -- quantum and classical -- within a single …
Based on the principle of relativity and the postulate on universal invariant constants (c,l), all possible kinematics can be set up with sub-symmetries of the Umov-Weyl-Fock transformations for the inertial motions. Further, in the combinatory approach, all these symmetries are intrinsically related to each other, e.g. to the very important dS kinematics for the cosmic scale physics.
In this paper we recall a simple formulation of the stationary electrovacuum theory in terms of the famous complex Ernst potentials, a pair of functions which allows one to generate new exact solutions from known ones by means of the so-called nonlinear hidden symmetries of Lie-Backlund type. This formalism turned out to be very useful to perform a complete classification of all 4D solutions which present two spacetime symmetries or possess two Killing vectors. Curiously enough, the Ernst formalism can be extended and applied to stationary General Relativity as well as the effective heterotic …
A model is proposed to demonstrate that classical general relativity can emerge from loop quantum gravity, in a relational description of gravitational field in terms of coordinates given by matter. Local Dirac observables and coherent states are defined to explore physical content of the model. Expectation values of commutators between the observables for the coherent states recover the four-dimensional diffeomorphism algebra and the large-scale dynamics of the gravitational field relative to the matter coordinates. Both results conform with general relativity up to calculable corrections nea…
We show how the Weyl quantum walk derived from principles in Ref. [1], enjoying a nonlinear Lorentz symmetry of dynamics, allows one to introduce Hopf algebras for position and momentum of the emerging particle. We focus on two special models of Hopf algebras--the usual Poincaré and the k-Poincaré algebras.
Asymptotic symmetries of black hole spacetimes have received much attention as a possible origin of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy in black hole thermodynamics. In general, it takes hard efforts to find appropriate asymptotic conditions on a metric and a Lie algebra generating the transformation of symmetries with which the corresponding charges are integrable. We here propose an alternative approach to construct building blocks of asymptotic symmetries of a given spacetime metric. Our algorithmic approach may make it easier to explore asymptotic symmetries in any spacetime than in conventiona…
We explore spacetime symmetries and topologies of the two metric sectors in Hassan-Rosen bimetric theory. We show that, in vacuum, the two sectors can either share or have separate spacetime symmetries. If stress-energy tensors are present, a third case can arise, with different spacetime symmetries within the same sector. This raises the question of the best definition of spacetime symmetry in Hassan-Rosen bimetric theory. We emphasize the possibility of imposing ansätze and looking for solutions having different Killing vector fields or different isometries in the two sectors, which has gain…
I discuss gauge and global symmetries in particle physics, condensed matter physics, and quantum gravity. In a modern understanding, global symmetries are approximate and gauge symmetries may be emergent. (Based on a lecture at the April, 2016 meeting of the American Physical Society in Salt Lake City, Utah.)
There ought to exist a description of quantum field theory which does not depend on an external classical time. To achieve this goal, in a recent paper we have proposed a non-commutative special relativity in which space-time and matter degrees of freedom are treated as classical matrices with arbitrary commutation relations, and a space-time line element is defined using a trace. In the present paper, following the theory of Trace Dynamics, we construct a statistical thermodynamics for the non-commutative special relativity, and show that one arrives at a generalized quantum dynamics in which…
Building on our previous work [Phys.Rev.D82,085016(2010)], we show in this paper how a Brownian motion on a short scale can originate a relativistic motion on scales that are larger than particle's Compton wavelength. This can be described in terms of polycrystalline vacuum. Viewed in this way, special relativity is not a primitive concept, but rather it statistically emerges when a coarse graining average over distances of order, or longer than the Compton wavelength is taken. By analyzing the robustness of such a special relativity under small variations in the polycrystalline grain-size dis…
In this paper we recall the construction of scalar field action on $κ$-Minkowski space-time and investigate its properties. In particular we show how the co-product of $κ$-Poincaré algebra of symmetries arises from the analysis of the symmetries of the action, expressed in terms of Fourier transformed fields. We also derive the action on commuting space-time, equivalent to the original one. Adding the self-interaction $Φ^4$ term we investigate the modified conservation laws. We show that the local interactions on $κ$-Minkowski space-time give rise to 6 inequivalent ways in which energy and mom…
A spacetime interpretation of deformed relativity symmetry groups was recently proposed by resorting to Finslerian geometries, seen as the outcome of a continuous limit endowed with first order corrections from the quantum gravity regime. In this work we further investigate such connection between deformed algebras and Finslerian geometries by showing that the Finsler geometries associated to the generalisation of the Poincaré group (the so called $κ$-Poincaré Hopf algebra) are maximally symmetric spacetimes which are also of the Berwald type: Finslerian spacetimes for which the connections ar…
In the Palatini action of general relativity the connection and the metric are treated as independent dynamical variables. Instead of assuming a relation between these quantities, the desired relation between them is derived through the Euler-Lagrange equations of the Palatini action. In this manuscript we construct an extended Palatini action, where we do not assume any a priori relationship between the connection, the covariant metric tensor, and the contravariant metric tensor. Instead we treat these three quantities as independent dynamical variables. We show that this action reproduces th…
We describe firstly the basic features of quantum $κ$-Poincaré symmetries with their Hopf algebra structure. The quantum $κ$-Poincaré framework in any basis relates rigidly the quantum $κ$-Poincaré algebra with quantum $κ$-Poincaré group, noncommutative space-time and $κ$-deformed phase space. Further we present the approach of Doubly Special Relativity (DSR) theories, which introduce(in the version DSR1) kinematically the frame - independent fundamental mass parameter as described by maximal three-momentum $|\overrightarrow{p}|=κc$. We argue why the DSR theories in one-particle sector can be …
Gauge symmetries remove unphysical states and guarantee that field theories are free from the pathologies associated with these states. In this work we find a set of general conditions that guarantee the removal of unphysical states in field theories describing interacting vector fields. These conditions are obtained through the extension of a mechanism for the emergence of gauge symmetries proposed in a previous article [C. Barceló et al. JHEP 10 (2016) 084] in order to account for non-Abelian gauge symmetries, and are the following: low-energy Lorentz invariance, emergence of massless vector…
We investigate adiabatic solutions to general relativity for a spacetime with spatial slices with boundary, by Manton approximation. This approximation tells us for a theory with a Lagrangian in the natural form, a motion that is described as a slow motion on the space of vacua-static solutions that minimize the energy -- is a good approximate solution. To apply this to the case of general relativity we first bring it to the natural form by splitting space and time and choosing Gaussian normal coordinates, where a spacetime is described by the metric on its spatial slices. Then following Manto…
We develop the general relativity of extended spacetime-property for describing events including their properties. The anticommuting nature of property coordinates, augmenting space-time $({\bf x},t)$, allows for the natural emergence of generations and for the simple incorporation of gauge fields in the spacetime-property sector. With one electric property this results in a geometrical unification of gravity and electromagnetism, leading to a Maxwell-Einstein Lagrangian plus a cosmological term. Addition of one neutrinic and three chromic properties should lead to unification of gravity with …
If general relativity is an emergent phenomenon, there may be small violations of diffeomorphism invariance. We propose a phenomenology of perturbatively small violations of general relativity by the inclusion of terms which break general covariance. These can be tested by matching to the Parametrized Post Newtonian (PPN) formalism. The most sensitive tests involve pulsar timing and provide an extremely strong bound, with a dimensionless constraint of order 10^{-20} relative to gravitational strength.
The Hamiltonian structure of General Relativity (GR), for both metric and tetrad gravity in a definite continuous family of space-times, is fully exploited in order to show that: i) the "Hole Argument" can be bypassed by means of a specific "physical individuation" of point-events of the space-time manifold $M^4$ in terms of the "autonomous degrees of freedom" of the vacuum gravitational field ("Dirac observables"), while the "Leibniz equivalence" is reduced to differences in the "non-inertial appearances" (connected to "gauge" variables) of the same phenomena. ii) the chrono-geometric structu…
We analyze the asymptotic symmetries and their associated charges at spatial infinity in $4$-dimensional asymptotically-flat spacetimes. We use the covariant formalism of Ashtekar and Hansen where the asymptotic fields and symmetries live on the $3$-manifold of spatial directions at spatial infinity, represented by a timelike unit-hyperboloid (or de Sitter space). Using the covariant phase space formalism, we derive formulae for the charges corresponding to asymptotic supertranslations and Lorentz symmetries at spatial infinity. With the motivation of, eventually, proving that these charges ma…
Gauge theories of conformal spacetime symmetries are presented which merge features of Yang-Mills theory and general relativity in a new way. The models are local but nonpolynomial in the gauge fields, with a nonpolynomial structure that can be elegantly written in terms of a metric (or vielbein) composed of the gauge fields. General relativity itself emerges from the construction as a gauge theory of spacetime translations. The role of the models within a general classification of consistent interactions of gauge fields is discussed as well.
We study the covariant phase space of vacuum general relativity at the null boundary of causal diamonds. The past and future components of such a null boundary each have an infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra consisting of diffeomorphisms of the $2$-sphere and boost supertranslations corresponding to angle-dependent rescalings of affine parameter along the null generators. Associated to these symmetries are charges and fluxes obtained from the covariant phase space formalism using the prescription of Wald and Zoupas. By analyzing the behavior of the spacetime metric near the corners of the c…
The aim of the present article is to give physical meaning to the ingredients of standard gauge field theory in the framework of the scale relativity theory. Owing to the principle of the relativity of scales, the scale-space is not absolute. Therefore, the scale variables are functions of the space-time coordinates, so that we expect a coupling between the displacement in space-time and the dilation/contraction of the scale variables, which are identified with gauge transformations. The gauge fields naturally appear as a new geometric contribution to the total variation of the scale variables…
The tensor model can be regarded as theory of dynamical fuzzy spaces, and gives a way to formulate gravity on fuzzy spaces. It has recently been shown that the low-lying fluctuations around the Gaussian background solutions in the tensor model agree correctly with the metric fluctuations on the flat spaces with general dimensions in the general relativity. This suggests that the local gauge symmetry (the symmetry of local translations) is also emergent around these solutions. To systematically study this possibility, I apply the BRS gauge fixing procedure to the tensor model. The ghost kinetic…

For a long time it is believed that black hole horizon are thermal and quantum mechanical in nature. The microscopic origin of this thermality is the main question behind our present investigation, which reveals possible importance of near horizon symmetry. It is this symmetry which is assumed to be spontaneously broken by the background spacetime, generates the associated Goldstone modes. In this paper we construct a suitable classical action for those Goldstone modes, and show that all the momentum modes experience nearly the same inverted harmonic potential, leading to an instability. Thank…
We study the action of space-time symmetries on quantum fields in the presence of small departures from locality determined by dynamical gravity. It is shown that, under such relaxation of locality, the symmetries of the theory cannot be described within the usual framework of Lie algebras but rather in terms of non-co-commutative Hopf algebras or "quantum groups". Similar "quantizations" of space-time symmetries are expected to emerge in the low-energy limit of certain quantum gravity models and have been used to describe the symmetries of various non-commutative space-times. Our result provi…
In this paper we have studied the nature of kinematical and dynamical laws in $κ$-Minkowski spacetime from a new perspective: the canonical phase space approach. We discuss a particular form of $κ$-Minkowski phase space algebra that yields the $κ$-extended finite Lorentz transformations derived in \cite{kim}. This is a particular form of a Deformed Special Relativity model that admits a modified energy-momentum dispersion law as well as noncommutative $κ$-Minkowski phase space. We show that this system can be completely mapped to a set of phase space variables that obey canonical (and {\it{not…
We report a new internal gauge symmetry of the n-dimensional Palatini action with cosmological term (n>3) that is the generalization of three-dimensional local translations. This symmetry is obtained through the direct application of the converse of Noether's second theorem on the theory under consideration. We show that diffeomorphisms can be expressed as linear combinations of it and local Lorentz transformations with field-dependent parameters up to terms involving the variational derivatives of the action. As a result, the new internal symmetry together with local Lorentz transformations c…
In $n$-dimensional spacetimes ($n>3$), there exists an internal gauge symmetry of the Palatini action with a cosmological constant that is the natural generalization of the so-called "local translations" of three-dimensional general relativity. We report the extension of this symmetry to include the minimal coupling of Yang-Mills and fermion fields to the Palatini action with a cosmological constant. We show that, as in the case of three-dimensional local translations, the extended symmetry depends on the energy-momentum tensor of the corresponding matter field and, for fermions, it contains a…
These notes are an introduction to asymptotic symmetries in gauge theories, with a focus on general relativity in four dimensions. We explain how to impose consistent sets of boundary conditions in the gauge fixing approach and how to derive the asymptotic symmetry parameters. The different procedures to obtain the associated charges are presented. As an illustration of these general concepts, the examples of four-dimensional general relativity in asymptotically (locally) (A)dS$_4$ and asymptotically flat spacetimes are covered. This enables us to discuss the different extensions of the Bondi-…
We work on some general extensions of the formalism for theories which preserve the relativity of inertial frames with a nonlinear action of the Lorentz transformations on momentum space. Relativistic particle models invariant under the corresponding deformed symmetries are presented with particular emphasis on deformed dilatation transformations. The algebraic transformations relating the deformed symmetries with the usual (undeformed) ones are provided in order to preserve the Lorentz algebra. Two distinct cases are considered: a deformed dilatation transformation with a spacelike preferred …
Modern physics, via the standard model with Higgs mechanism and string theory for example, has supplied ether-like models and emergent general relativity scenarios that substantially weaken the usual defense of orthodox relativity and abstract, relational space-time in general. Over a dozen arguments in support of relativism against space-substances are discussed. It is not known whether perceived space-time is fundamental or due to a condensed state or string theoretical membrane. Emergent relativity indicates perhaps a whole tower of more fundamental space-times. Whether space is best descri…
Asymptotic symmetries in Carrollian gravitational theories in 3+1 space and time dimensions obtained from "magnetic" and "electric" ultrarelativistic contractions of General Relativity are analyzed. In both cases, parity conditions are needed to guarantee a finite symplectic term, in analogy with Einstein gravity. For the magnetic contraction, when Regge-Teitelboim parity conditions are imposed, the asymptotic symmetries are described by the Carroll group. With Henneaux-Troessaert parity conditions, the asymptotic symmetry algebra corresponds to a BMS-like extension of the Carroll algebra. For…
We study the nature of asymptotic symmetries in topological 3d gravity with torsion. After introducing the concept of asymptotically anti-de Sitter configuration, we find that the canonical realization of the asymptotic symmetry is characterized by the Virasoro algebra with classical central charge, the value of which is the same as in general relativity: c=3l/2G.
We investigate several problems in relativity and particle physics where symmetries play a central role; in all cases geometric properties of Lie groups and their quotients are related to physical effects. The first part is concerned with symmetries in gravity. We apply the theory of Lie group deformations to isometry groups of exact solutions in general relativity, relating the algebraic properties of these groups to physical properties of the spacetimes. We then make group deformation local, generalising deformed special relativity (DSR) by describing gravity as a gauge theory of the de Sitt…
We consider a recently proposed extension of the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra to include arbitrary infinitesimal diffeomorphisms on a (2)-sphere. To realize this extended algebra as asymptotic symmetries, we work with an extended class of spacetimes in which the unphysical metric at null infinity is not universal. We show that the symplectic current evaluated on these extended symmetries is divergent in the limit to null infinity. We also show that this divergence cannot be removed by a local and covariant redefinition of the symplectic current. This suggests that such an extended symmetry alge…
Lie symmetries are discussed for the Wheeler-De Witt equation in Bianchi Class A cosmologies. In particular, we consider General Relativity, minimally coupled scalar field gravity and Hybrid Gravity as paradigmatic examples of the approach. Several invariant solutions are determined and classified according to the form of the scalar field potential. The approach gives rise to a suitable method to select classical solutions and it is based on the first principle of the existence of symmetries.
This is a review of the constrained dynamical structure of Poincare gauge theory which concentrates on the basic canonical and gauge properties of the theory, including the identification of constraints, gauge symmetries and conservation laws. As an interesting example of the general approach we discuss the teleparallel formulation of general relativity.
Using a BRST treatment, we show that the equivalence of General Relativity and Shape Dynamics can be extended to a theory that respects the BRST-symmetries of General Relativity as well as the ones of an extended version of Shape Dynamics. This version of Shape Dynamics implements local spatial Weyl transformations as well as a local and abstract analogue of special conformal transformations. Standard effective field theory arguments suggest that the definition of a gravity theory should implement this duality between General Relativity and Shape Dynamics, thus the name "Doubly General Relativ…
We show that the uncertainty in distance and time measurements found by the heuristic combination of quantum mechanics and general relativity is reproduced in a purely classical and flat multi-fractal spacetime whose geometry changes with the probed scale (dimensional flow) and has non-zero imaginary dimension, corresponding to a discrete scale invariance at short distances. Thus, dimensional flow can manifest itself as an intrinsic measurement uncertainty and, conversely, measurement-uncertainty estimates are generally valid because they rely on this universal property of quantum geometries. …
We find a nontrivial regime of spinfoam quantum gravity that reproduces classical Einstein equations. This is the double scaling limit of small Immirzi parameter (gamma), large spins (j) with physical area (gamma times j) constant. In addition to quantum corrections in the Planck constant, we find new corrections in the Immirzi parameter due to the quantum discreteness of spacetime. The result is a strong evidence that the spinfoam covariant quantization of general relativity possesses the correct classical limit.
Recently, a novel idea about our expanding Universe was proposed by T. Padmanabhan [arXiv:1206.4916]. He suggested that the expansion of our Universe can be thought of as the emergence of space as cosmic time progresses. The emergence is governed by the basic relation that the increase rate of Hubble volume is linearly determined by the difference between the number of degrees of freedom on the horizon surface and the one in the bulk. In this paper, following this idea, we generalize the basic relation to derive the Friedmann equations of an $(n+1)$-dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker unive…
We consider extensions of General Relativity based on the non-local function $f(R, \Box^{-1} R)$, where $R$ is the Ricci curvature scalar and the non-locality is due to the term $\Box^{-1} R$. We focus on cosmological minisuperspaces and select viable models by the Noether Symmetry Approach. Then we find viable exact solutions pointing out the role of non-locality in cosmology.
The moduli space of the Calabi-Yau three-folds, which play a role as superstring ground states, exhibits the same {\em special geometry} that is known from nonlinear sigma models in $N=2$ supergravity theories. We discuss the symmetry structure of special real, complex and quaternionic spaces. Maps between these spaces are implemented via dimensional reduction. We analyze the emergence of {\em extra} and {\em hidden} symmetries. This analysis is then applied to homogeneous special spaces and the implications for the classification of homogeneous quaternionic spaces are discussed.
We discuss the applicability of the programme of decoherence -- emergence of approximate classical behaviour through interaction with the environment -- to cases where it was suggested that the presence of symmetries would lead to exact superselection rules. For this discussion it is useful to make a distinction between pure symmetries and redundancies, which results from an investigation into the constraint equations of the corresponding theories. We discuss, in particular, superpositions of states with different charges, as well as with different masses, and suggest how the corresponding int…
