In the Palatini action of general relativity the connection and the metric are treated as independent dynamical variables. Instead of assuming a relation between these quantities, the desired relation between them is derived through the Euler-Lagrange equations of the Palatini action. In this manuscript we construct an extended Palatini action, where we do not assume any a priori relationship between the connection, the covariant metric tensor, and the contravariant metric tensor. Instead we treat these three quantities as independent dynamical variables. We show that this action reproduces the standard Einstein field equations depending on a single metric tensor. We further show that in this formulation the cosmological constant has an additional theoretical significance. Normally the cosmological constant is added to the Einstein field equations for the purpose of having general relativity be consistent with cosmological observations. In the formulation presented here, the nonvanishing cosmological constant also ensures the self-consistency of the theory.
We derive the expressions for the local, on-shell closed co-dimension 2 forms in the Palatini formulation of general relativity and explicitly show their on-shell equivalence to those of the metric formulation. When compared to other first order formulations, two subtleties have to be addressed during the construction: off-shell non-metricity and the fact that the transformation of the connection under infinitesimal diffeomorphisms involves second order derivatives of the associated vector fields.
We show that, within some modified gravity theories, such as the Palatini models, the non-linear nature of the field equations implies that the usual naive averaging procedure (replacing the microscopic energy-momentum by its cosmological average) could be invalid. As a consequence, the relative motion of particles in Palatini theories is actually indistinguishable from that predicted by General Relativity. Moreover, there is no WEP violation. Our new and most important result is that the cosmology and astrophysics, or put more generally, the behaviours on macroscopic scales, predicted by thes…
Non-vacuum static spherically-symmetric solutions in Palatini f(R) gravity are examined. It is shown that for generic choices of f(R), there are commonly-used equations of state for which no satisfactory physical solution of the field equations can be found within this framework, apart from in the special case of General Relativity, casting doubt on whether Palatini f(R) gravity can be considered as giving viable alternatives to General Relativity.
In this paper, we analysis the counter-term for the general relativity in the Palatini framework. The expression is valid for both the null boundary and non-null boundary. We show that final results coincide with that in Ref.\cite{pad1} which starts form the Einstein-Hilbert action.
An introduction to extended theories of gravity formulated in metric-affine (or Palatini) spaces is presented. Focusing on spherically symmetric configurations with electric fields, we will see that in these theories the central singularity present in General Relativity is generically replaced by a wormhole structure. The resulting space-time becomes geodesically complete and, therefore, can be regarded as non-singular. We illustrate these properties considering two different models, namely, a quadratic $f(R)$ theory and a Born-Infeld like gravity theory.
We show that the Palatini--Cartan--Holst formulation of General Relativity in tetrad variables must be complemented with additional requirements on the fields when boundaries are taken into account for the associated BV theory to induce a compatible BFV theory on the boundary.
We discuss static, spherically symmetric solutions with an electric field in a quadratic extension of general relativity formulated in the Palatini approach (assuming that metric and connection are independent fields). Unlike the usual metric formulation of this theory, the field equations are second-order and ghost-free. It is found that the resulting black holes present a central core whose area is proportional to the Planck area times the number of charges. Some of these solutions are nonsingular. In this case, the charge-to-mass ratio implies that the core matter density is independent of …
Wormholes are hypothetical shortcuts in spacetime that in General Relativity unavoidably violate all of the pointwise energy conditions. In this paper, we consider several wormhole spacetimes that, as opposed to the standard \emph{designer} procedure frequently employed in the literature, arise directly from gravitational actions including additional terms resulting from contractions of the Ricci tensor with the metric, and which are formulated assuming independence between metric and connection (Palatini approach). We reinterpret such wormhole solutions under the prism of General Relativity a…
We work on the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formulations of the Palatini action. In the Lagrangian formulation, we find that we need to assume the metric compatibility and the torsion zero or to assume the tetrad compatibility to describe General Relativity. In the Hamiltonian formulation, we obtain the Einstein's equations only with assuming the tetrad compatibility. The Hamiltonian from assuming the metric compatibility and the torsion zero should be used to quantize General Relativity.
In the framework of the Einstein-Palatini formalism, even though the projective transformation connecting the arbitrary connection with the Levi Civita connection has been floating in the literature for a long time and perhaps the result was implicitly known in the affine gravity community, yet as far as we know Julia and Silva were the first to realise its gauge character. We rederive this result by using the Rosenfeld-Dirac-Bergmann approach to constrained Hamiltonian systems and do a comprehensive self contained analysis establishing the equivalence of the Einstein-Palatini and the metric f…
We work on the Lagrangian formulation of the Palatini action. We find that we must assume the metric compatibility condition for the Palatini action to describe General Relativity, which condition should hold in quantization. We find that we must also assume one of the torsion zero condition or the tetrad compatibility condition. Our results will hold for any action in terms of the tetrad and the internal connection which describes General Relativity.
Projective invariance is a symmetry of the Palatini version of General Relativity which is not present in the metric formulation. The fact that the Riemann tensor changes nontrivially under projective transformations implies that, unlike in the usual metric approach, in the Palatini formulation this tensor is subject to a gauge freedom, which allows some ambiguities even in its scalar contractions. In this sense, we show that for the Schwarzschild solution there exists a projective gauge in which the (affine) Kretschmann scalar, $K\equiv {R^α}_{βμν}{R_α}^{βμν}$, can be set to vanish everywhere…
We derive the Ashtekar-Barbero variables in Loop Quantum Gravity(LQG) starting from the Palatini action. We find that we need either the torsion-free condition or the compatibility condition for the Palatini action to describe General Relativity.
We consider FRW cosmology in $f(R)= R+ γR^2+δR^3$ modified framework. The Palatini approach reduces its dynamics to the simple generalization of Friedmann equation. Thus we study the dynamics in two-dimensional phase space with some details. After reformulation of the model in the Einstein frame, it reduces to the FRW cosmological model with a homogeneous scalar field and vanishing kinetic energy term. This potential determines the running cosmological constant term as a function of the Ricci scalar. As a result we obtain the emergent dark energy parametrization from the covariant theory. We s…
General Relativity has so far passed almost all the ground-based and solar-system experiments. Any reasonable extended gravity models should consistently reduce to it at least in the weak field approximation. In this work we derive the gravitational potential for the Palatini formulation of the modified gravity of the L(R) type which admits a de Sitter vacuum solution. We conclude that the Newtonian limit is always obtained in those class of models and the deviations from General Relativity is very small for a slowly moving source.
We explore equilibrium solutions of spherically symmetric boson stars in the Palatini formulation of $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity. We account for the modifications introduced in the gravitational sector by using a recently established correspondence between modified gravity with scalar matter and general relativity with modified scalar matter. We focus on the quadratic theory $f(\mathcal{R})=R+ξR^2$ and compare its solutions with those found in general relativity, exploring both positive and negative values of the coupling parameter $ξ$. As matter source, a complex, massive scalar field with and w…
In the paper we show that the general relativity action (and Lagrangian) in recent Einstein-Palatini formulation is equivalent to the action (and Langrangian) of a gauge field. We begin with a bit of information of the Einstein-Palatini (EP) action, then we present how Einstein fields equations can be derived from it. In the next section, we consider Einstein-Palatini action integral for general relativity with a positive cosmological constant $Λ$ in terms of $\hat{F}$, the curvature of the affine connection's pulled back from de Sitter bundle to Lorentz bundle. We will see that in terms of $\…
Einstein's General Relativity (GR) is possibly one of the greatest intellectual achievements ever conceived by the human mind. In fact, over the last century, GR has proven to be an extremely successful theory, with a well established experimental footing. However, the discovery of the late-time cosmic acceleration, which represents a new imbalance in the governing gravitational field equations, has forced theorists and experimentalists to question whether GR is the correct relativistic theory of gravitation, and has spurred much research in modified gravity, where extensions of the Hilbert-Ei…
We reformulate the Palatini action for general relativity (GR) in terms of moving frames that exhibit local Galilean covariance in a large speed of light expansion. For this, we express the action in terms of variables that are adapted to a Galilean subgroup of the $GL(n,\mathbb{R})$ structure group of a general frame bundle. This leads to a novel Palatini-type formulation of GR that provides a natural starting point for a first-order non-relativistic expansion. In doing so, we show how a comparison of Lorentzian and Newton-Cartan metric-compatibility explains the appearance of torsion in the …
In $f(R)$ extensions of General Relativity the Palatini approach provides ghost-free theories with second-order field equations and allows to obtain charged black hole solutions which depart from the standard Reissner-Nordström solution.
We have derived a modified Lane-Emden equation for the Starobinsky model in Palatini gravity which is numerically solvable. Comparing the results to the ones provided by General Relativity we observe a significant difference depending on the theory parameter for the $M-R$ relations.
The actions for bosonic fields typically contain terms quadratic in the derivatives of the fields. This is not the case in the Palatini approach to general relativity. The action does not contain any derivatives of the metric and it only contains terms linear in the derivatives of the connection. In general relativity the covariant derivative of the metric vanishes, so it is not possible to include such terms in the action. However, in more general theories this is not the case. In this paper I consider an action which is quadratic in the derivatives of the metric and connection and show that …
Barbero recently suggested a modification of Ashtekar's choice of canonical variables for general relativity. Although leading to a more complicated Hamiltonian constraint this modified version, in which the configuration variable still is a connection, has the advantage of being real. In this article we derive Barbero's Hamiltonian formulation from an action, which can be considered as a generalization of the ordinary Hilbert-Palatini action.
By using the equivalence between metric and Palatini f(R) (or "modified") gravities with omega=0, -3/2 Brans-Dicke theories, it is shown that the Ehlers-Geren-Sachs theorem of general relativity is extended to modified gravity. In the case of metric f(R) gravity previously studied, this agrees with previous literature.
We revisit the problem of defining non-minimal gravity in the first order formalism. Specializing to scalar-tensor theories, which may be disguised as `higher-derivative' models with the gravitational Lagrangians that depend only on the Ricci scalar, we show how to recast these theories as Palatini-like gravities. The correct formulation utilizes the Lagrange multiplier method, which preserves the canonical structure of the theory, and yields the conventional metric scalar-tensor gravity. We explain the discrepancies between the naïve Palatini and the Lagrange multiplier approach, showing that…
Independent variation of the metric and connection in the Einstein-Hilbert action, called the Palatini variation, is generally taken to be equivalent to the usual formulation of general relativity in which only the metric is varied. However, when an abelian symmetry is allowed for the connection, the Palatini variation leads to an integrable Weyl geometry, not Riemannian. We derive this result using two possible metric/connection pairs: (1) the metric and general coordinate connection and (2) the solder form and local Lorentz spin connection of Poincarè gauge theory. Both lead to the same conc…
We consider static spherically symmetric stellar configurations in Palatini theories of gravity in which the Lagrangian is an unspecified function of the form $f(R,R_{μν}R^{μν})$. We obtain the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equations corresponding to this class of theories and show that they recover those of $f(R)$ theories and General Relativity in the appropriate limits. We show that the exterior vacuum solutions are of Schwarzschild-de Sitter type and comment on the possible expected modifications, as compared to GR, of the interior solutions.
In Palatini $f(R)$ gravity, the parameters of the Schwarzschild - de Sitter solution as well as the whole interior solutions of compact objects are expected to change when compared to general relativity. We solve the Palatini field equations numerically in the case of the models $f(R) = R + αR^2$ and $f(R) = R - μ^4/R$, and using the equation of state of Fermi gas. We show how the density profiles and the prediction for the maximum masses of white dwarfs (the Chandrasekhar limit) and neutron stars (the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff limit) are altered, and thereby conclude that observations on com…
I review recent results obtained for extensions of general relativity formulated within the Palatini formalism, an approach in which metric and connection are treated as independent geometrical entities. The peculiar dynamics of these theories, governed by second-order equations and having no new degrees of freedom, makes them specially suitable to address certain aspects of quantum gravity phenomenology, construct nonsingular bouncing cosmologies, and explore black hole interiors, which in the Reissner-Nordstrom case develop a compact core of finite density instead of a point-like singularity…
We analyse configurations of compact stars in the so-called R-squared gravity in the Palatini formalism. Using a realistic equation of state we show that the mass-radius configurations are lighter than their counterparts in General Relativity. We also obtain the internal profiles, which run in strong correlation with the derivatives of the equation of state, leading to regions where the mass parameter decreases with the radial coordinate in a counter-intuitive way. In order to analyse such correlation, we introduce a parametrisation of the equation of state given by multiple polytropes, which …
We consider static spherically symmetric stellar configurations in Palatini theories of gravity in which the Lagrangian is an unspecified function of the form f(R,R_{μν}R^{μν}). We obtain the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equations corresponding to this class of theories and show that they recover those of f(R) theories and General Relativity in the appropriate limits. We compute exterior vacuum solutions and comment on the possible expected modifications, as compared to GR, of the interior solutions.
General relativity in four dimensions can be reformulated as a gauge theory, referred to as Palatini-Cartan-Holst theory. This paper describes its reduced phase space using a geometric method due to Kijowski and Tulczyjew and its relation to that of the Einstein-Hilbert approach.
The Palatini formalism is developed for gravitational theories in flat geometries. We focus on two particularly interesting scenarios. First, we fix the connection to be metric compatible, but we follow a completely covariant approach by imposing the constraints with suitable Lagrange multipliers. For a general quadratic theory we show how torsion naturally propagates and we reproduce the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity as a particular quadratic action that features an additional Lorentz symmetry. We then study the much less explored theories formulated in a geometry with neither…
We study solutions of the stellar structure equations for spherically symmetric objects in Palatini $f(R)=R+αR^2$ and $f(R,Q)=R+αR^2+βQ$ in the mass-radius region associated to neutron stars. We illustrate the potential impact of the $R^2$ and $Q$ terms by studying a range of viable values of $α$ and $β$. Similarly, we use different equations of state (SLy, FPS, HS(DD2) and HS(TMA)) as a simple way to account for the equation of state uncertainty. Our results show that for certain combinations of the $α$ and $β$ parameters and equation of state, the effect of modifications of general relativit…
General Relativity yields an analytical prediction of a minimum required mass of roughly $\sim 0.08-0.09 M_{\odot}$ for a star to stably burn sufficient hydrogen to fully compensate photospheric losses and, therefore, to belong to the main sequence. Those objects below this threshold (brown dwarfs) eventually cool down without any chance to stabilize their internal temperature. In this work we consider quadratic Palatini $f(\mathcal{R})$ gravity and show that the corresponding newtonian hydrostatic equilibrium equation contains a new term whose effect is to introduce a weakening/strenghtening …
We study the formation and perturbation of black holes by null fluxes of neutral matter in a quadratic extension of General Relativity formulated a la Palatini. Working in a spherically symmetric space-time, we obtain an exact analytical solution for the metric that extends the usual Vaidya-type solution to this type of theories. We find that the resulting space-time is formally that of a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole but with an effective charge term carrying the wrong sign in front of it. This effective charge is directly related to the luminosity function of the radiation stream. When the i…
We analyze the cosmological implementation of Palatini $f(R)$ theories, constructed with a Nieh-Yan term and solved with respect to the torsion. We consider the relevant case of the quadratic correction to the Hilbert-Palatini action in the Ricci scalar, mimicking the Starobinsky model of the metric formulation. We point out the emergence of peculiar cosmological scenarios, depending on the sign of such correction, able to reproduce bouncing settings and to restore the standard Universe dynamics in the late asymptotic limit. Furthermore, we outline the settling of Little-Rip dynamics, which ca…
The speed of light is a complicated synthesizer quantity with distinctive origins which lead to coincident values in the standard theory. Due to the fact that different aspects of speed of light do not coincide in the local inertial frame for different Palatini modified gravity theories, when deviating from general relativity, one should consider which aspect of speed of light should be taken into account meticulously and unambiguously. The aim of this study is mainly investigating the modification of the SN Ia luminosity distance, for two f(R) and f(RR) extended theories in the local inertial…
We consider the internal structure and the physical properties of specific classes of neutron, quark and Bose-Einstein Condensate stars in the hybrid metric-Palatini gravity theory, which is a combination of the metric and Palatini $f(R)$ formalisms. The theory is very successful in accounting for the observed phenomenology, since it unifies local constraints at the Solar System level and the late-time cosmic acceleration, even if the scalar field is very light. We derive the equilibrium equations for a spherically symmetric configuration (mass continuity and Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff) in the…
We consider the cosmology of the Ricci-tensor-squared gravity in the Palatini variational approach. The gravitational action of standard general relativity is modified by adding a function f(R^abR_ab) to the Einstein-Hilbert action, and the Palatini variation is used to derive the field equations. A general method of obtaining the background and first-order covariant and gauge-invariant perturbation equations is outlined. As an example, we consider the cosmological constraints on such theories arising from the supernova type Ia and cosmic microwave background observations. We find that the bes…
In the present work, we study linear, torsion-free metric-Palatini gravity, extended by the quadratics of the antisymmetric part of the Ricci tensor and extended also by the presence of the affine connection in the matter sector. We show that this extended metric-Palatini gravity reduces dynamically to the general relativity plus a geometrical massive vector field corresponding to non-metricity of the connection. We also show that this geometric Proca field couples to fermions universally. We derive static, spherically symmetric field equations of this Einstein-geometric Proca theory. We study…
We study a generalization of the Holst action where we admit nonmetricity and torsion in manifolds with timelike boundaries (both in the metric and tetrad formalism). We prove that its space of solutions is equal to the one of the Palatini action. Therefore, we conclude that the metric sector is in fact identical to GR, which is defined by the Einstein-Hilbert action. We further prove that, despite defining the same space of solutions, the Palatini and (the generalized) Holst Lagrangians are not cohomologically equal. Thus, the presymplectic structure and charges provided by the Covariant Phas…
We work out the junction conditions for $f(R)$ gravity formulated in metric-affine (Palatini) spaces using a tensor distributional approach. These conditions are needed for building consistent models of gravitating bodies with an interior and exterior regions matched at some hypersurface. Some of these conditions depart from the standard Darmois-Israel ones of General Relativity and from their metric $f(R)$ counterparts. In particular, we find that the trace of the stress-energy momentum tensor in the bulk must be continuous across the matching hypersurface, though its normal derivative need n…
The theory of General Relativity was established on a spacetime manifold equipped with a metric tensor, $(\mathcal{M}_4,\text{g})$, and the connection on $\mathcal{M}_4$ identified with the Levi-Civita one. Even though there are valid reasons to assume a torsionless manifold that preserves the metric, it was shown that dealing away with these assumptions the Levi-Civita condition can be reproduced at the level of equations of motion of GR. It was not long before the equivalence of General Relativity between the two descriptions, known as the Palatini or first-order formalism in which the conne…
The hybrid metric-Palatini theory of gravity (HMPG), proposed in 2012 by T. Harko et al., is known to successfully describe both local (solar-system) and cosmological observations. We discuss static, spherically symmetric vacuum solutions of HMPG with the aid of its scalar-tensor representation. This scalar-tensor theory coincides with general relativity with a conformally coupled scalar field (which can be canonical or phantom), therefore the known solutions of this theory are re-interpreted in terms of HMPG. In particular, in the case of zero scalar field potential $V (ϕ)$, such that both Ri…
We compare Higgs inflation in the metric and Palatini formulations of general relativity, with loop corrections are treated in a simple approximation. We consider Higgs inflation on the plateau, at a critical point, at a hilltop and in a false vacuum. In the last case there are only minor differences. Otherwise we find that in the Palatini formulation the tensor-to-scalar ratio is consistently suppressed, spanning the range $1\times10^{-13}<r<7\times10^{-5}$, compared to the metric case result $2\times10^{-5}<r<0.2$. Even when the values of $n_s$ and $r$ overlap, the running and running of the…
In this note the AKSZ construction is applied to the BFV description of the reduced phase space of the Einstein-Hilbert and of the Palatini--Cartan theories in every space-time dimension greater than two. In the former case one obtains a BV theory for the first-order formulation of Einstein--Hilbert theory, in the latter a BV theory for Palatini--Cartan theory with a partial implementation of the torsion-free condition already on the space of fields. All theories described here are BV versions of the same classical system on cylinders. The AKSZ implementations we present have the advantage of …
In $n$-dimensional spacetimes ($n>3$), there exists an internal gauge symmetry of the Palatini action with a cosmological constant that is the natural generalization of the so-called "local translations" of three-dimensional general relativity. We report the extension of this symmetry to include the minimal coupling of Yang-Mills and fermion fields to the Palatini action with a cosmological constant. We show that, as in the case of three-dimensional local translations, the extended symmetry depends on the energy-momentum tensor of the corresponding matter field and, for fermions, it contains a…
We present a covariant multisymplectic formulation for the Einstein-Palatini (or Metric-Affine) model of General Relativity (without energy-matter sources). As it is described by a first-order affine Lagrangian (in the derivatives of the fields), it is singular and, hence, this is a gauge field theory with constraints. These constraints are obtained after applying a constraint algorithm to the field equations, both in the Lagrangian and the Hamiltonian formalisms. In order to do this, the covariant field equations must be written in a suitable geometrical way, using integrable distributions wh…
We study the field equations of extensions of General Relativity formulated within a metric-affine formalism setting torsion to zero (Palatini approach). We find that different (second-order) dynamical equations arise depending on whether torsion is set to zero i) a priori or ii) a posteriori, i.e., before or after considering variations of the action. Considering a generic family of Ricci-squared theories, we show that in both cases the connection can be decomposed as the sum of a Levi-Civita connection and terms depending on a vector field. However, while in case i) this vector field is rela…
We consider scalar field inflation in the Palatini formulation of general relativity. The covariant derivative of the metric is then non-zero. From the effective theory point of view it should couple to other fields. We write down the most general couplings between it and a scalar field that are quadratic in derivatives. We consider both the case when the torsion is determined by the field equations and the case when it is assumed to be zero a priori. We find the metric derivative terms can significantly modify inflationary predictions. We specialise to Higgs inflation and terms of only up to …
