We reformulate the Palatini action for general relativity (GR) in terms of moving frames that exhibit local Galilean covariance in a large speed of light expansion. For this, we express the action in terms of variables that are adapted to a Galilean subgroup of the $GL(n,\mathbb{R})$ structure group of a general frame bundle. This leads to a novel Palatini-type formulation of GR that provides a natural starting point for a first-order non-relativistic expansion. In doing so, we show how a comparison of Lorentzian and Newton-Cartan metric-compatibility explains the appearance of torsion in the non-relativistic expansion.
We establish a correspondence between general relativity with diffeomorphism invariance and scalar field theories with Galilean invariance: notions such as the Levi-Civita connection and the Riemann tensor have a Galilean counterpart. This suggests Galilean theories as the unique nontrivial alternative to gauge theories (including general relativity). Moreover, it is shown that the requirement of first-order Palatini formalism uniquely determines the Galileon models with second-order field equations, similar to the Lovelock gravity theories. Possible extensions are discussed.
A novel algorithm is provided to couple a Galilean invariant model with curved spatial background by taking nonrelativistic limit of a unique minimally coupled relativistic theory, which ensures Galilean symmetry in the flat limit and canonical transformation of the original fields. That the twin requirements are fulfilled is ensured by a new field, the existence of which was demonstrated recently from Galilean gauge theory. The ambiguities and anomalies concerning the recovery of Galilean symmetry in the flat limit of spatial non relativistic diffeomorphic theories, reported in the literature…
We perform a detailed analysis of Galilean field theories, starting with free theories and then interacting theories. We consider non-relativistic versions of massless scalar and Dirac field theories before we go on to review our previous construction of Galilean Electrodynamics and Galilean Yang-Mills theory. We show that in all these cases, the field theories exhibit non-relativistic conformal structure (in appropriate dimensions). The surprising aspect of the analysis is that the non-relativistic conformal structure exhibited by these theories, unlike relativistic conformal invariance, beco…
We calculate the static Wilson loop from string/gauge correspondence to obtain the $Q\bar Q$ potential in non-relativistic quantum field theory, i.e. CFT with Galilean symmetry. We analyze the convexity conditions \cite{bachas} for $Q\bar Q$ potential in this theory, and obtain restrictions for the acceptable dynamical exponent $z$.
The low-temperature form of the equilibrium relativistic mass distribution is subject to the Galilean limit by taking $c\rightarrow \infty .$ In this limit the relativistic Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution passes to the usual nonrelativistic form and the Dulong-Petit law is recovered.
We consider two non-relativistic strings and their Galilean symmetries. These strings are obtained as the two possible non-relativistic (NR) limits of a relativistic string. One of them is non-vibrating and represents a continuum of non-relativistic massless particles, and the other one is a non-relativistic vibrating string. For both cases we write the generator of the most general point transformation and impose the condition of Noether symmetry. As a result we obtain two sets of non-relativistic Killing equations for the vector fields that generate the symmetry transformations. Solving thes…
We provide the set of equations for non-relativistic fluid dynamics on arbitrary, possibly time-dependent spaces, in general coordinates. These equations are fully covariant under either local Galilean or local Carrollian transformations, and are obtained from standard relativistic hydrodynamics in the limit of infinite or vanishing velocity of light. All dissipative phenomena such as friction and heat conduction are included in our description. Part of our work consists in designing the appropriate coordinate frames for relativistic spacetimes, invariant under Galilean or Carrollian diffeomor…
Maxwell's Electrodynamics admits two distinct Galilean limits called the Electric and Magnetic limits. We show that the equations of motion in both these limits are invariant under the Galilean Conformal Algebra in D=4, thereby exhibiting non-relativistic conformal symmetries. Remarkably, the symmetries are infinite dimensional and thus Galilean Electrodynamics give us the first example of an infinitely extended Galilean Conformal Field Theory in D>2. We examine details of the theory by looking at purely non-relativistic conformal methods and also use input from the limit of the relativistic t…
The relativistic distribution for indistinguishable events is considered in the mass-shell limit $m^2\cong M^2,$ where $M$ is a given intrinsic property of the events. The characteristic thermodynamic quantities are calculated and subject to the zero-mass and the high-temperature limits. The results are shown to be in agreement with the corresponding expressions of an on-mass-shell relativistic kinetic theory. The Galilean limit $c\rightarrow \infty ,$ which coincides in form with the low-temperature limit, is considered. The theory is shown to pass over to a nonrelativistic statistical mechan…
We comprehensively study Galilean and Carrollian hydrodynamics on arbitrary backgrounds, in the presence of a matter/charge conserved current. For this purpose, we follow two distinct and complementary paths. The first is based on local invariance, be it Galilean or Carrollian diffeomorphism invariance, possibly accompanied by Weyl invariance. The second consists in analyzing the relativistic fluid equations at large or small speed of light, after choosing an adapted gauge, ADM-Zermelo for the former and Papapetrou-Randers for the latter. Unsurprisingly, the results agree, but the second appro…
We construct free Lie algebras which, together with the algebra of spatial rotations, form infinite-dimensional extensions of finite-dimensional Galilei Maxwell algebras appearing as global spacetime symmetries of extended non-relativistic objects and non-relativistic gravity theories. We show how various extensions of the ordinary Galilei algebra can be obtained by truncations and contractions, in some cases via an affine Kac-Moody algebra. The infinite-dimensional Lie algebras could be useful in the construction of generalized Newton-Cartan theories gravity theories and the objects that coup…
We consider Schrodinger equations for a non-relativistic particle obeying N+1-th order higher derivative classical equation of motion. These equations are invariant under N(odd)-extended Galilean conformal (NGC) algebras in general d+1 dimensions. In 2+1 dimensions, the exotic Schrodinger equations are invariant under N(even)-GCA.
We consider a Galilean N=2 supersymmetric theory in 2+1 dimensions with F-term couplings, obtained by null reduction of a relativistic Wess-Zumino model. We compute quantum corrections and we check that, as for the relativistic parent theory, the F-term does not receive quantum corrections. Even more, we find evidence that the causal structure of the non-relativistic dynamics together with particle number conservation constrain the theory to be one-loop exact.
Galilean Conformal Algebras (GCA) have been recently proposed as a different non-relativistic limit of the AdS/CFT conjecture. In this note, we look at the representations of the GCA. We also construct explicitly the two and three point correlators in this non-relativistic limit of CFT and comment on the differences with the relativistic case and also the more studied Schrodinger group.
We discuss a new formalism for constructing a non-relativistic (NR) theory in curved background. Named as galilean gauge theory, it is based on gauging the global galilean symmetry. It provides a systematic algorithm for obtaining the covariant curved space time generalisation of any NR theory defined in flat space time. The resulting background is just the Newton- Cartan manifold. The example of NR free particle is explicitly demonstrated.
The non-relativistic versions of the generalized Poincaré algebras and generalized $AdS$-Lorentz algebras are obtained. This non-relativistic algebras are called, generalized Galilean algebras type I and type II and denoted by $\mathcal{G}\mathfrak{B}_{n}$ and $\mathcal{G}\mathfrak{L}_{_{n}}$ respectively. Using a generalized Inönü--Wigner contraction procedure we find that the generalized Galilean algebras type I can be obtained from the generalized Galilean algebras type II. The $S$-expansion procedure allows us to find the $\mathcal{G}\mathfrak{B}_{_{5}}$ algebra from the Newton--Hooke alge…
We construct a Galilean invariant non-gravitational closed string theory whose excitations satisfy a non-relativistic dispersion relation. This theory can be obtained by taking a consistent low energy limit of any of the conventional string theories, including the heterotic string. We give a finite first order worldsheet Hamiltonian for this theory and show that this string theory has a sensible perturbative expansion, interesting high energy behavior of scattering amplitudes and a Hagedorn transition of the thermal ensemble. The strong coupling duals of the Galilean superstring theories are c…
A slightly modified and regularized version of the non-relativistic limit of the relativistic anyon model considered by Jackiw and Nair yields particles associated with the twofold central extension of the Galilei group, with independent spin and exotic structure.
We present the quantum field description of Galilean electrodynamics minimally coupled to massless Galilean fermion in (3 + 1) dimensions. At the classical level, the Lagrangian is obtained as a null reduction of a relativistic theory in one higher dimension. We use functional techniques to develop the quantum field description of the theory. Quantum corrections to the propagators and vertex are obtained upto first order and the theory is found to be renormalizable to this order. The beta function of the theory is found to grow linearly; the theory is not asymptotically free.
We show that the Lukierski et al. model, invariant with respect to the two-fold centrally extended Galilei group, can be decomposed into an infinite number of independent copies (differing in their spin) of the ``exotic'' particle of Duval et al. The difference between the two models is found to be sensitive to electromagnetic coupling. The nature of the noncommutative plane coordinates is discussed in the light of the exotic Galilean symmetry. We prove that the first model, interpreted as describing a non-relativistic anyon, is the non-relativistic limit of a particle with torsion related to …
We consider the non-relativistic c -> \infty contraction limit of the (N=2k)- extended D=4 superconformal algebra su(2,2;N), introducing in this way the non-relativistic (N=2k)-extended Galilean superconformal algebra. Such a Galilean superconformal algebra has the same number of generators as su(2,2|2k). The usp(2k) algebra describes the non-relativistic internal symmetries, and the generators from the coset u(2k)/usp(2k) become central charges after contraction.
We initiate a systematic study of `t Hooft anomalies in Galilean field theories, focusing on two questions therein. In the first, we consider the non-relativistic theories obtained from a discrete light-cone quantization (DLCQ) of a relativistic theory with flavor or gravitational anomalies. We find that these anomalies survive the DLCQ, becoming mixed flavor/boost or gravitational/boost anomalies. We also classify the pure Weyl anomalies of Schrödinger theories, which are Galilean conformal field theories (CFTs) with $z=2$. There are no pure Weyl anomalies in even spacetime dimension, and the…
The procedure of null reduction provides a concrete way of constructing field theories with Galilean invariance. We use this to examine Galilean gauge theories, viz. Galilean electrodynamics and Yang-Mills theories in spacetime dimensions 3 and 4. Different non-relativistic conformal symmetries arise in these contexts: Schr{ö}dinger symmetry in $d=3$ and Galilean conformal symmetry in $d=4$. A canonical analysis further reveals that the symmetries enhance to their infinite dimensional versions in phase space and pick up central extensions. In addition, for the Abelian theory, we discuss non-re…
We consider the general $\mathcal{N}{=}\,4,$ $d{=}\,3$ Galilean superalgebra with arbitrary central charges and study its dynamical realizations. Using the nonlinear realization techniques, we introduce a class of actions for $\mathcal{N}{=}\,4$ three-dimensional non-relativistic superparticle, such that they are linear in the central charge Maurer-Cartan one-forms. As a prerequisite to the quantization, we analyze the phase space constraints structure of our model for various choices of the central charges. The first class constraints generate gauge transformations, involving fermionic $κ$-ga…
We extend the null background construction of [arXiv:1505.05677,arXiv:1509.04718] to include torsion and a conserved spin current, and use it to study gauge and gravitational anomalies in Galilean theories coupled to torsional Newton-Cartan backgrounds. We establish that the relativistic anomaly inflow mechanism with an appropriately modified anomaly polynomial, can be used to generate these anomalies. Similar to relativistic case, we find that Galilean anomalies also survive only in even dimensions. Further, these anomalies only effect the gauge and rotational symmetries of a Galilean theory;…
The Galilean Conformal Algebra (GCA) arises from the relativistic conformal algebra in the non-relativistic limit. In two dimensions, one can view it as a limit of linear combinations of the two copies Virasoro algebra. Recently, it has been argued that Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) realizes the quantum 2d GCA in a particular scaling limit of the gravitational Chern-Simons term. To add strength to this claim, we demonstrate a matching of correlation functions on both sides of this correspondence. A priori looking for spatially dependent correlators seems to force us to deal with high spi…
The non-relativistic version of the non commutative Field Theory, recently introduced by Lozano, Moreno and Schaposnik [1], is shown to admit the ``exotic'' Galilean symmetry found before for point particles.
Non-relativistic versions of the AdS/CFT conjecture have recently been investigated in some detail. These have primarily been in the context of the Schrodinger symmetry group. Here we initiate a study based on a {\it different} non-relativistic conformal symmetry: one obtained by a parametric contraction of the relativistic conformal group. The resulting Galilean conformal symmetry has the same number of generators as the relativistic symmetry group and thus is different from the Schrodinger group (which has fewer). One of the interesting features of the Galilean Conformal Algebra is that it a…
We apply the nonlinear realizations method for constructing new Galilean conformal mechanics models. Our starting point is the Galilean conformal algebra which is a non-relativistic contraction of its relativistic counterpart. We calculate Maurer-Cartan one-forms, examine various choices of the relevant coset spaces and consider the geometric inverse Higgs-type constraints which reduce the number of the independent coset parameters and, in some cases, provide dynamical equations. New Galilean conformally invariant actions are derived in arbitrary space-time dimension D=d+1 (no central charges)…
We study the entanglement entropy of the vacuum in non-relativistic local theories with Galilean or Schrödinger symmetry. We clear some confusion in the literature on the free Schrödinger case. We find that with only positive $U(1)$ charge particles (states) and a unique zero $U(1)$ charge state (the vacuum) the entanglement entropy must vanish in that state.
The Galilean conformal algebra has recently been realised in the study of the non-relativistic limit of the AdS/CFT conjecture. This was obtained by a systematic parametric group contraction of the parent relativistic conformal field theory. In this paper, we extend the analysis to include supersymmetry. We work at the level of the co-ordinates in superspace to construct the N=1 Super Galilean conformal algebra. One of the interesting outcomes of the analysis is that one is able to naturally extend the finite algebra to an infinite one. This looks structurally similar to the N=1 superconformal…
In this letter we study an infinite extension of the Galilei symmetry group in any dimension that can be thought of as a non-relativistic or post-Galilean expansion of the Poincare symmetry. We find an infinite-dimensional vector space on which this generalized Galilei group acts and usual Minkowski space can be modeled by our construction. We also construct particle and string actions that are invariant under these transformations.
Boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) is the study of conformal field theory (CFT) in semi-infinite space-time. In non-relativistic limit ($x\rightarrowεx, t\rightarrow t, ε\rightarrow 0$), boundary conformal algebra changes to boundary Galilean conformal algebra (BGCA). In this work, some aspects of AdS/BCFT in non-relatvistic limit were explored. We constrain correlation functions of Galilean conformal invariant fields with BGCA generators. For a situation with a boundary condition at surface $x=0$ ($z=\bar{z}$), our result is agree with non-relativistic limit of BCFT two-point function. We…
This article is a detailed version of our short letter `On equilibrium partition function for non-relativistic fluid' [arXiv:1505.05677] extended to include an anomalous $U(1)$ symmetry. We construct a relativistic system, which we call null fluid and show that it is in one-to-one correspondence with a Galilean fluid living in one lower dimension. The correspondence is based on light cone reduction, which is known to reduce the Poincare symmetry of a theory to Galilean in one lower dimension. We show that the proposed null fluid and the corresponding Galilean fluid have exactly same symmetries…
We extend the cohomological analysis in arXiv:1410.5831 of anisotropic Lifshitz scale anomalies. We consider non-relativistic theories with a dynamical critical exponent $z=2$ with or without non-relativistic boosts and a particle number symmetry. We distinguish between cases depending on whether the time direction does or does not induce a foliation structure. We analyse both $1+1$ and $2+1$ spacetime dimensions. In $1+1$ dimensions we find no scale anomalies with Galilean boost symmetries. The anomalies in $2+1$ dimensions with Galilean boosts and a foliation structure are all B-type and are…
Deformed Special Relativity (DSR) is obtained by imposing a maximal energy to Special Relativity and deforming the Lorentz symmetry (more exactly the Poincaré symmetry) to accommodate this requirement. One can apply the same procedure deforming the Galilean symmetry in order to impose a maximal speed (the speed of light). This leads to a non-commutative space structure, to the expected deformations of composition of speed and conservation of energy-momentum. In doing so, one runs into most of the ambiguities that one stumbles onto in the DSR context. However, this time, Special Relativity is t…
We write down a Schwinger-Keldysh effective field theory for non-relativistic (Galilean) hydrodynamics. We use the null background construction to covariantly couple Galilean field theories to a set of background sources. In this language, Galilean hydrodynamics gets recast as relativistic hydrodynamics formulated on a one-dimension higher spacetime admitting a null Killing vector. This allows us to import the existing field-theoretic techniques for relativistic hydrodynamics into the Galilean setting, with minor modifications to include the additional background vector field. We use this form…
In 2+1 dimensions, we propose a renormalizable non-linear sigma model action which describes the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric generalization of Galilean Electrodynamics. We first start with the simplest model obtained by null reduction of the relativistic Abelian $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric QED in 3+1 dimensions and study its renormalization properties directly in non-relativistic superspace. Despite the existence of a non-renormalization theorem induced by the causal structure of the non-relativistic dynamics, we find that the theory is non-renormalizable. Infinite dimensionless, supersy…
We discuss non-relativistic conformal algebras generalizing the Schrödinger algebra. One instance of these algebras is a conformal, acceleration-extended, Galilei algebra, which arises also as a contraction of the relativistic conformal algebra. In two dimensions, this admits an "exotic" central extension, whereby boosts do not commute. We study general properties of non-relativistic conformal field theories with such symmetry. We realize geometrically the symmetry in terms of a metric invariant under the exotic conformal Galilei algebra, although its signature is neither Lorentzian nor Euclid…
We study the space-time symmetries of the actions obtained by expanding the action for a massive free relativistic particle around the Galilean action. We obtain all the point space-time symmetries of the post-Galilean actions by working in canonical space. We also construct an infinite collection of generalized Schrödinger algebras parameterized by an integer $M$, with $M=0$ corresponding to the standard Schrödinger algebra. We discuss the Schrödinger equations associated to these algebras, their solutions and projective phases.
The Galilei-covariant fermionic field theories are quantized by using the path-integral method and five-dimensional Lorentz-like covariant expressions of non-relativistic field equations. Firstly, we review the five-dimensional approach to the Galilean Dirac equation, which leads to the Levy-Leblond equations, and define the Galilean generating functional and Green's functions for positive- and negative-energy/mass solutions. Then, as an example of interactions, we consider the quartic self-interacting potential $λ (\barΨ Ψ)^2$, and we derive expressions for the 2- and 4-point Green's function…
We investigate the symmetry structure of the non-relativistic limit of Yang-Mills theories. Generalising previous results in the Galilean limit of electrodynamics, we discover that for Yang-Mills theories there are a variety of limits inside the Galilean regime. We first explicitly work with the $SU(2)$ theory and then generalise to $SU(N)$ for all $N$, systematising our notation and analysis. We discover that the whole family of limits lead to different sectors of Galilean Yang-Mills theories and the equations of motion in each sector exhibit hitherto undiscovered infinite dimensional symmetr…
The noncommutative spacetimes associated to the $κ$-Poincaré relativistic symmetries and their "non-relativistic" (Galilei) and "ultra-relativistic" (Carroll) limits are indistinguishable, since their coordinates satisfy the same algebra. In this work, we show that the three quantum kinematical models can be differentiated when looking at the associated spaces of time-like worldlines. Specifically, we construct the noncommutative spaces of time-like geodesics with $κ$-Galilei and $κ$-Carroll symmetries as contractions of the corresponding $κ$-Poincaré space and we show that these three spaces …
We reconsider general aspects of Galilean-invariant thermal field theory. Using the proposal of our companion paper, we recast non-relativistic hydrodynamics in a manifestly covariant way and couple it to a background spacetime. We examine the concomitant consequences for the thermal partition functions of Galilean theories on a time-independent, but weakly curved background. We work out both the hydrodynamics and partition functions in detail for the example of parity-violating normal fluids in two dimensions to first order in the gradient expansion, finding results that differ from those pre…
We provide a framework for non-relativistic holography so that a covariant action principle ensuring the Galilean symmetry for dual conformal field theory is given. This framework is based on the Bargmann lift of the Newton-Cartan gravity to the one-dimensional higher Einstein gravity, or reversely, the null-like Kaluza-Klein reduction. We reproduce the previous zero temperature results, and our framework provides a natural explanation about why the holography is co-dimension 2. We then construct the black hole solution dual to the thermal CFT, and find the horizon is curvature singular. Howev…
Relevant physical models are described by singular Lagrangians, so that their Hamiltonian description is based on the Dirac theory of constraints. The qualitative aspects of this theory are now understood, in particular the role of the Shanmugadhasan canonical transformation in the determination of a canonical basis of Dirac's observables allowing the elimination of gauge degrees of freedom from the classical description of physical systems. This programme was initiated by Dirac for the electromagnetic field with charged fermions. Now Dirac's observables for Yang-Mills theory with fermions (wh…
We analyze the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking of scale invariance in Galilean invariant field theories. We show that the existence of a dynamic gapless dilaton mode depends on whether the $U(1)$ particle number or the Galilean boost symmetry are spontaneously broken. When both scale and particle number symmetries are spontaneously broken there is one propagating gapless Nambu-Goldstone mode. Its dispersion relation is linear if the chemical potential is nonzero and quadratic otherwise. We discuss the reversibility of RG flows in such theories.
