We study a generalization of the Holst action where we admit nonmetricity and torsion in manifolds with timelike boundaries (both in the metric and tetrad formalism). We prove that its space of solutions is equal to the one of the Palatini action. Therefore, we conclude that the metric sector is in fact identical to GR, which is defined by the Einstein-Hilbert action. We further prove that, despite defining the same space of solutions, the Palatini and (the generalized) Holst Lagrangians are not cohomologically equal. Thus, the presymplectic structure and charges provided by the Covariant Phase Space method might differ. However, using the relative bicomplex framework, we show the covariant phase spaces of both theories are equivalent (and in fact equivalent to GR), as well as their charges, clarifying some open problems regarding dual charges and their equivalence in different formulations.
We prove the equivalence in the covariant phase space of the metric and connection formulations for Palatini gravity, with nonmetricity and torsion, on a spacetime manifold with boundary. To this end, we will rely on the cohomological approach provided by the relative bicomplex framework. Finally, we discuss some of the physical implications derived from this equivalence in the context of singularity identification through curvature invariants.
Manifolds endowed with torsion and nonmetricity are interesting both from the physical and the mathematical points of view. In this paper, we generalize some results presented in the literature. We study Einstein manifolds (i.e., manifolds whose symmetrized Ricci tensor is proportional to the metric) in d dimensions with nonvanishing torsion that has both a trace and a traceless part, and analyze invariance under extended conformal transformations of the corresponding field equations. Then, we compare our results to the case of Einstein manifolds with zero torsion and nonvanishing nonmetricity…
Torsion and nonmetricity are inherent ingredients in modifications of Eintein's gravity that are based on affine spacetime geometries. In the context of pure f(R) gravity we discuss here, in some detail, the relatively unnoticed duality between torsion and nonmetricity. In particular we show that for R2 gravity torsion and nonmetricity are related by projective transformations. Since the latter correspond simply to redefining the affine parameters of autoparallels, we conclude that torsion and nonmetricity are physically equivalent properties of spacetime. As a simple example we show that both…
We show that the gravitational field equations derived from an action composed of i) an arbitrary function of the scalar curvature and other scalar fields plus ii) connection-independent kinetic and source terms, are identical whether one chooses nonmetricity to vanish and have non-zero torsion or vice versa.
We consider various models of three-dimensional gravity with torsion or nonmetricity (metric affine gravity), and show that they can be written as Chern-Simons theories with suitable gauge groups. Using the groups ISO(2,1), SL(2,C) or SL(2,R) x SL(2,R), and the fact that they admit two independent coupling constants, we obtain the Mielke-Baekler model for zero, positive or negative effective cosmological constant respectively. Choosing SO(3,2) as gauge group, one gets a generalization of conformal gravity that has zero torsion and only the trace part of the nonmetricity. This characterizes a W…
We construct Plebański-Demiański stationary and axisymmetric solutions with two expanding and double principal null directions in the framework of Metric-Affine gauge theory of gravity. Starting from the new improved form of the metric with vanishing cosmological constant recently achieved by Podolský and Vrátný, we extend this form in the presence of a cosmological constant and derive the conditions under which the physical sources of the torsion and nonmetricity tensors provide dynamical contributions preserving it in Weyl-Cartan geometry. The resulting black hole configurations are characte…
We propose a gravitational model which allows the independent dynamical behaviour of the torsion and nonmetricity fields to be displayed in the framework of Metric-Affine gauge theory of gravity. For this task, we derive a new exact black hole solution referred to this model which extends the role of torsion of the main well-known exact solutions based on Weyl-Cartan geometry and constitutes the first known isolated gravitational system characterized by a metric tensor with independent spin and dilation charges.
We develop a theory in which there are couplings amongst Dirac spinor, dilaton and non-Riemannian gravity and explore the nature of connection-induced dilaton couplings to gravity and Dirac spinor when the theory is reformulated in terms of the Levi-Civita connection. After presenting some exact solutions without spinors, we investigate the minimal spinor couplings to the model and in conclusion we can not find any nontrivial dilaton couplings to spinor.
By using our recent generalization of the colliding waves concept to metric-affine gravity theories, and also our generalization of the advanced and retarded time coordinate representation in terms of Jacobi functions, we find a general class of colliding wave solutions with fourth degree polynomials in metric-affine gravity. We show that our general approach contains the standard second degree polynomials colliding wave solutions as a particular case.
In the framework of Metric-Affine Gravity, the existing correspondence between the Einstein tensor and the energy-momentum tensor of matter provided by General Relativity is extended towards a post-Riemannian description in terms of the torsion and nonmetricity fields, which are sourced by the spin, dilation and shear currents of matter. In this work, we focus on the dynamical role of the traceless part of the nonmetricity tensor and its intrinsic connection with shears, defining a model which encloses a new black hole solution endowed with shear charges. We show that the extension in the pres…
The intriguing choice to treat alternative theories of gravity by means of the Palatini approach, namely elevating the affine connection to the role of independent variable, contains the seed of some interesting (usually under-explored) generalizations of General Relativity, the metric-affine theories of gravity. The peculiar aspect of these theories is to provide a natural way for matter fields to be coupled to the independent connection through the covariant derivative built from the connection itself. Adopting a procedure borrowed from the effective field theory prescriptions, we study the …
We explore the relation of the Holst term with the Nieh-Yan term in terms of metric variables. We show that the Holst term indeed affects the classical equations of motion in the presence of matter with spin. Therefore the correct term to add to the Einstein-Hilbert action such that the equations of motion are not affected is the Nieh-Yan term. We then calculate the torsion charge due to this term in the context of a perfect fluid sphere with torsion and show that it vanishes once a horizon is formed but not otherwise. We also show that adding on torsion to General Relativity the Einstein's eq…
Einstein's celebrated theory of gravitation can be presented in three forms: general relativity, teleparallel gravity, and the rarely considered before symmetric teleparallel gravity. Extending the latter, we introduce a new class of theories where a scalar field is coupled nonminimally to nonmetricity $Q$, which here encodes the gravitational effects like curvature $R$ in general relativity or torsion $T$ in teleparallel gravity. We point out the similarities and differences with analogous scalar-curvature and scalar-torsion theories by discussing the field equations, role of connection, conf…
The coupling of the electromagnetic field to gravity is an age-old problem. Presently, there is a resurgence of interest in it, mainly for two reasons: (i) Experimental investigations are under way with ever increasing precision, be it in the laboratory or by observing outer space. (ii) One desires to test out alternatives to Einstein's gravitational theory, in particular those of a gauge-theoretical nature, like Einstein-Cartan theory or metric-affine gravity. A clean discussion requires a reflection on the foundations of electrodynamics. If one bases electrodynamics on the conservation laws …
Examples in which spacetime might become non-Riemannian appear above Planck energies in string theory or, in the very early universe, in the inflationary model. The simplest such geometry is metric-affine geometry, in which {\it nonmetricity} appears as a field strength, side by side with curvature and torsion. In matter, the shear and dilation currents couple to nonmetricity, and they are its sources. After reviewing the equations of motion and the Noether identities, we study two recent vacuum solutions of the metric-affine gauge theory of gravity. We then use the values of the nonmetricity …
We investigate the Holst action for closed Riemannian 4-manifolds with orthogonal connections. For connections whose torsion has zero Cartan type component we show that the Holst action can be recovered from the heat asymptotics for the natural Dirac operator acting on left-handed spinor fields.
We call a manifold with torsion and nonmetricity the metric-affine manifold. The nonmetricity leads to a difference between the auto parallel line and the extreme line, and to a change in the expression of the Frenet transport and moving basis. The torsion leads to a change in the Killing equation. We also need to add a similar equation for the connection. The analysis of the Frenet transport leads to the concept of the Cartan transport and an introduction of the connection compatible with the metric tensor. The dynamics of a particle follows to the Cartan transport. We need additional physica…
The form of Maxwell's theory is well known in the framework of general relativity, a fact that is related to the applicability of the principle of equivalence to electromagnetic phenomena. We pose the question whether this form changes if torsion and/or nonmetricity fields are allowed for in spacetime. Starting from the conservation laws of electric charge and magnetic flux, we recognize that the Maxwell equations themselves remain the same, but the constitutive law must depend on the metric and, additionally, may depend on quantities related to torsion and/or nonmetricity. We illustrate our r…

The irreducible decomposition technique is applied to the study of classical models of metric-affine gravity (MAG). The dynamics of the gravitational field is described by a 12-parameter Lagrangian encompassing a Hilbert-Einstein term, torsion and nonmetricity square terms, and one quadratic curvature piece that is built up from Weyl's segmental curvature. Matter is represented by a hyperfluid, a continuous medium the elements of which possess classical momentum and hypermomentum. With the help of irreducible decompositions, we are able to express torsion and traceless nonmetricity explicitly …

In the context of the metric-affine Chern-Simons gravity endowed with projective invariance, we derive analytical solutions for torsion and nonmetricity in the homogeneous and isotropic cosmological case, described by a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric. We discuss in some details the general properties of the cosmological solutions in the presence of a perfect fluid, such as the dynamical stability and the emergence of big bounce points, and we examine the structure of some specific solutions reproducing de Sitter and power law behaviours for the scale factor. Then, we focus on first-ord…
A new geometric interpretation for General Relativity (GR) is proposed. We show that in the presence of an arbitrary affine connection, the gravitational field is described as nonmetricity of the affine connection. An affine connection can be interpreted as induced by a frame of reference (FR). Although the gravitational field equations are identical to Einstein's equations of GR, this formulation leads to a covariant tensor (instead of the pseudotensor) of energy-momentum of the gravitational field and covariant conservation laws. We further develop a geometric representation of FR as a metri…
We analyze a modified $f(R)$ theory of gravity in the Palatini formulation, when an Holst term endowed with a dynamical Immirzi field is included. We study the basic features of the model, especially in view of liminating the torsion field via the Immirzi field and the scalar-tensor degrees of freedom of the $f(R)$ model. The main task of this study is the investigation of the morphology of the gravitational wave polarization when their coupling to a circle of test particles is considered. We first observe that the dynamics of the scalar mode of the $f(R)$ Lagrangian is frozen out, since its f…
We consider orthogonal connections with arbitrary torsion on compact Riemannian manifolds. For the induced Dirac operators, twisted Dirac operators and Dirac operators of Chamseddine-Connes type we compute the spectral action. In addition to the Einstein-Hilbert action and the bosonic part of the Standard Model Lagrangian we find the Holst term from Loop Quantum Gravity, a coupling of the Holst term to the scalar curvature and a prediction for the value of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter.
In this note, we review the canonical analysis of the Holst action in the time gauge, with a special emphasis on the Hamiltonian equations of motion and the fixation of the Lagrange multipliers. This enables us to identify at the Hamiltonian level the various components of the covariant torsion tensor, which have to be vanishing in order for the classical theory not to depend upon the Barbero-Immirzi parameter. We also introduce a formulation of three-dimensional gravity with an explicit phase space dependency on the Barbero-Immirzi parameter as a potential way to investigate its fate and rele…
In this review we consider the quadratic Metric-Affine Gauge gravity Lagrangian, which contains all the algebraic invariants up to quadratic order in torsion, nonmetricity and curvature. The goal will be to collect the known exact solutions for this theory that describe the propagation of a gravitational wave and some useful properties. We concentrate on solutions whose connections are different from the Levi-Civita one and provide also the extension of already known axial torsion solutions to more general Lagrangians. At the end, we will briefly discuss colliding waves and Riemannian solution…
We study the variational principle and derivation of the field equations for different classes of teleparallel gravity theories, using both their metric-affine and covariant tetrad formulations. These theories have in common that in addition to the tetrad or metric, they employ a flat connection as additional field variable, but differ by the presence of absence of torsion and nonmetricity for this independent connection. Besides the different underlying geometric formulation using a tetrad or metric as fundamental field variable, one has different choices to introduce the conditions of vanish…
We consider Poincare gravity coupled in a nonminimal way to spinors. The gravitational action is considered that contains both Palatini and Holst terms. Due to torsion the effective four - fermion interactions appear that may lead to the left - right asymmetry and the condensation of fermions. When the mass parameter entering the mentioned terms of the gravitational action is at a Tev scale the given construction may provide the dynamical Electroweak symmetry breaking. This is achieved via an arrangement of all Standard Model fermions in the left - handed Dirac spinors while the right - handed…
In Einstein's gravitational theory, the spacetime is Riemannian, that is, it has vanishing torsion and vanishing nonmetricity (covariant derivative of the metric). In the gauging of the general affine group ${A}(4,R)$ and of its subgroup ${GL}(4,R)$ in four dimensions, energy--momentum and hypermomentum currents of matter are canonically coupled to the one--form basis and to the connection of a metric--affine spacetime with nonvanishing torsion and nonmetricity, respectively. Fermionic matter can be described in this framework by half--integer representations of the $\overline{SL}(4,R)$ coveri…
It was showed by Perez and Rovelli in 2006 that the Holst action in gravity with torsion with massless and minimally coupling Dirac fermions gives rise to the four-fermion coupling term, whose coefficient is a function of the Barbero-Immirzi (BI) parameter. This parameter is present in the Holst action, which is an object of investigation in a non-perturbative formalism of quantum gravity. The key feature is the torsion because its absence implies no effect from Holst term in dynamical equations. In this paper we consider a spin fluid (also called Weyssenhoff fluid), which is a perfect fluid t…
We study a parity violating Metric-Affine gravitational theory given by the Einstein-Hilbert action plus the so-called Holst term in vacuum. We find out that for a certain value of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter the total action possesses a remarkable invariance under particular transformations of the affine connection. We prove that in all cases, with appropriate gauge choices, the connection reduces to the Levi-Civita one and that the theory turns out to be equivalent to general relativity in vacuum. Subsequently, we generalize our discussion and analyze the case of Metric-Affine $f(R)$ gravi…
We construct new explicit vacuum solutions of quadratic metric-affine gravity. The approach of metric-affine gravity in using an independent affine connection produces a theory with 10+64 unknowns, which implies admitting torsion and possible nonmetricity. Our spacetimes are generalisations of classical pp-waves, four-dimensional Lorentzian spacetimes which admit a nonvanishing parallel spinor field. We generalize this definition to metric compatible spacetimes with pp-metric and purely axial torsion. It has been suggested that one can interpret that the axial component of torsion as the Hodge…
We study the renormalization of theories of gravity with an arbitrary (torsionful and non-metric) connection. The class of actions we consider is of the Palatini type, including the most general terms with up to two derivatives of the metric, but no derivatives of the connection. It contains 19 independent parameters. We calculate the one loop beta functions of these parameters and find their fixed points. The Holst subspace is discussed in some detail and found not to be stable under renormalization. Some possible implications for ultraviolet and infrared gravity are discussed.
The spacetime of the metric-affine gauge theory of gravity (MAG) encompasses {\it nonmetricity} and {\it torsion} as post-Riemannian structures. The sources of MAG are the conserved currents of energy-momentum and dilation, shear and spin. We present an exact static spherically symmetric vacuum solution of the theory describing the exterior of a lump of matter carrying mass and dilation, shear and spin charges.
We show that the Einstein-Hilbert, the Einstein-Palatini, and the Holst actions can be derived from the Quadratic Spinor Lagrangian (QSL), when the three classes of Dirac spinor fields, under Lounesto spinor field classification, are considered. To each one of these classes, there corresponds a unique kind of action for a covariant gravity theory. In other words, it is shown to exist a one-to-one correspondence between the three classes of non-equivalent solutions of the Dirac equation, and Einstein-Hilbert, Einstein-Palatini, and Holst actions. Furthermore, it arises naturally, from Lounesto …
The theory of spinors is developed for locally anisotropic (la) spaces, in brief la-spaces, which in general are modeled as vector bundles provided with nonlinear and distinguished connections and metric structures (such la-spaces contain as particular cases the Lagrange, Finsler and, for trivial nonlinear connections, Kaluza-Klein spaces). The la-spinor differential geometry is constructed. The distinguished spinor connections are studied and compared with similar ones on la-spaces. We derive the la-spinor expressions of curvatures and torsions and analyze the conditions when the distinguishe…
This thesis covers several developments performed in metric-affine gravity. This alternative framework extends General Relativity by considering a more general connection than the one induced by the metric (i.e., arbitrary torsion and nonmetricity participate in the dynamics). We start by revising some mathematical aspects of the metric-affine framework, the way Lovelock and other invariants are extended to it and the construction of a gauge formalism. Then we focus on metric-affine pp-wave geometries and explore solutions of this type for the quadratic metric-affine Lagrangian (with even-pari…
Symmetric teleparallel gravity is constructed with a nonzero nonmetricity tensor while both torsion and curvature are vanishing. In this framework, we find exact scalarised spherically symmetric static solutions in scalar-tensor theories built with a nonminimal coupling between the nonmetricity scalar and a scalar field. It turns out that the Bocharova-Bronnikov-Melnikov-Bekenstein solution has a symmetric teleparallel analogue (in addition to the recently found metric teleparallel analogue), while some other of these solutions describe scalarised black hole configurations that are not known i…
General relativity can be presented in terms of other geometries besides Riemannian. In particular, teleparallel geometry (i.e., curvature vanishes) has some advantages, especially concerning energy-momentum localization and its ``translational gauge theory'' nature. The standard version is metric compatible, with torsion representing the gravitational ``force''. However there are many other possibilities. Here we focus on an interesting alternate extreme: curvature and torsion vanish but the nonmetricity $\nabla g$ does not---it carries the ``gravitational force''. This {\it symmetric telepar…
We present new rotating vacuum configurations endowed with both dynamical torsion and nonmetricity fields in the framework of Metric-Affine gauge theory of gravity. For this task, we consider scalar-flat Weyl-Cartan geometries and obtain an axisymmetric Kerr-Newman solution in the decoupling limit between the orbital and the spin angular momentum. The corresponding Kerr-Newman-de Sitter solution is also compatible with a cosmological constant and additional electromagnetic fields.
