Circumstellar environments of oxygen-rich stars are among the strongest SiO maser emitters. Physical processes such as collisions, infrared pumping and overlaps favors the inversion of level population and produce maser emission at different vibrational states. Despite numerous observational and theoretical efforts, we still do not have an unified picture including all the physical processes involved in the SiO maser emission. The aim of this work is to provide homogeneous data in a large sample of oxygen-rich stars. We present a survey of 67 oxygen-rich stars from 7 to 1 mm, in their rotational transitions from J=1-0 to J=5-4, for vibrational numbers v from 0 to 6 in the three main SiO isotopologues. We have used one of the 34 m NASA antennas at Robledo and the IRAM 30 m radio telescope. The first tentative detection of a v=6 line is reported, as well as the detection of new maser lines. The highest vibrational levels seem confined to small volumes, presumably close to the stars. The J=1-0, v=2 line flux is greater than the corresponding v=1 in almost half of the sample, which may confirm a predicted dependence on the pulsation cycle. This database is potentially useful in models which should consider most of the physical agents, time dependency, and mass-loss rates. As by-product, we report detections of 27 thermal rotational lines from other molecules, including isotopologues of SiS, H2S, SO, SO2, and NaCl.
We obtained, for the first time, astrometrically registered maps of the 22.2 GHz H2O and 42.8, 43.1, and 86.2 GHz SiO maser emission toward the semiregular b-type variable (SRb) R Crateris, at three epochs (2015 May 21, and 2016 January 7 and 26) using the Korean Very-long-baseline Interferometry Network. The SiO masers show a ring-like spatial structure, while the H2O maser shows a very asymmetric one-side outflow structure, which is located at the southern part of the ring-like SiO maser feature. We also found that the 86.2 GHz SiO maser spots are distributed in an inner region, compared to …
The SiO molecule is one of the candidates for the seed of silicate dust in the circumstellar envelope of evolved stars, but this opinion is challenged. In this work we investigate the relation of the SiO maser emis- sion power and the silicate dust emission power. With both our own observation by using the PMO/Delingha 13.7-m telescope and archive data, a sample is assembled of 21 SiO v=1,J=2-1 sources and 28 SiO v=1,J=1- 0 sources that exhibit silicate emission features in the ISO/SWS spectrum as well. The analysis of their SiO maser and silicate emission power indicates a clear correlation, …
SiO maser emission occurs in the extended atmosphere of evolved stars and can be studied at high angular resolution. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of Mira variables indicate that SiO masers are significantly linearly polarized with linear polarization fraction up to 100%. However, no information is available at high angular resolution for SiO masers in higher mass loss OH/IR stars. We extend the VLBI SiO maser studies to OH/IR stars. The observations enable us to understand the SiO pumping mechanisms in higher mass loss evolved objects and compare those with Mira variab…
The supergiant VX Sagittarii is a strong emitter of both H2O and SiO masers. However, previous VLBI observations have been performed separately, which makes it difficult to spatially trace the outward transfer of the material consecutively. Here we present the astrometrically registered, simultaneous maps of 22.2 GHz H2O and 43.1/42.8/86.2/129.3 GHz SiO masers toward VX Sagittarii. The H2O masers detected above the dust-forming layers have an asymmetric distribution. The multi-transition SiO masers are nearly circular ring, suggesting spherically symmetric wind within a few stellar radii. Thes…
Radio and infrared interferometry of SiO maser stars provide complementary information on the atmosphere and circumstellar environment at comparable spatial resolution. Here, we present the latest results on the atmospheric structure and the dust condensation region of AGB stars based on our recent infrared spectro-interferometric observations, which represent the environment of SiO masers. We discuss, as an example, new results from simultaneous VLTI and VLBA observations of the Mira variable AGB star R Cnc, including VLTI near- and mid-infrared interferometry, as well as VLBA observations of…
Maser lines of OH, H2 O, and SiO are commonly observed in O-rich AGB stars, but their presence after the end of the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) phase is linked to non-spherical mass-loss processes. IRAS 15452-5459 is a post-AGB star with an hourglass nebula whose maser lines are quite peculiar. We observed all of the three maser species with the Australia Telescope Compact Array with angular resolutions of 6'' , 0.6'' , 0.3'' , and 1.7'' at 18 cm, 13 mm, 7 mm, and 3 mm, respectively. While double peaks are routinely seen in OH and water masers and interpreted as due to expanding envelopes, o…
H2O (22 GHz) and SiO masers (43, 86, 129 GHz) in the bipolar proto-planetary nebula OH231.8+4.2 were simultaneously monitored using the 21-m antennas of the Korean VLBI Network in 2009-2015. Both species exhibit periodic flux variations that correlate with the central star's optical light curve, with a phase delay of up to 0.15 for the maser flux variations with respect to the optical light curve. The flux densities of SiO v = 2, J = 1-0 and H2O masers decrease with time, implying that they may disappear in 10-20 years. However, there seems to have been a transient episode of intense H2O maser…
Simultaneous time monitoring observations of H$_{2}$O $6_{16}-5_{23}$, SiO $J$ = 1--0, 2--1, 3--2, and $^{29}$SiO $v$ = 0, $J$ = 1--0 lines were carried out in the direction of the Mira variable star TX Cam with the Korean VLBI Network single dish radio telescopes. For the first time, the H$_{2}$O maser emission from TX Cam was detected near the stellar velocity at five epochs from April 10, 2013 ($ϕ$ = 3.13) to June 4, 2014 ($ϕ$ = 3.89) including minimum optical phases. The intensities of H$_{2}$O masers are very weak compared to SiO masers. The variation of peak antenna temperature ratios am…
This paper examines the detailed sub-milliarcsecond polarization properties of an individual SiO maser feature displaying a rotation in polarization electric vector position angle of approximately π/2 across the feature. Such rotations are a characteristic observational signature of circumstellar SiO masers detected toward a number of late-type, evolved stars. We employ a new calibration method for accurate circular VLBI polarimetry at millimeter wavelengths, to present the detailed Stokes {I,Q,U,V} properties for this feature. We analyze the fractional linear and circular polarization as a fu…
Interactions between AGB stars and a secondary in a close orbit are one possible explanation of why some AGB stars develop into aspherical planetary nebulae. This study uses millimeter observations of the continuum and SiO maser emission in several symbiotic Miras looking for evidence of an interaction between the two stars. New JVLA observations at ~45 mas resolution are analyzed, imaging continuum and SiO masers. Two of the three targets were detected and accurately registered continuum and line images were derived. No clear evidence of an interaction was found between components B and A in …
This paper presents a milliarcsecond-scale comparison of the polarised component-level v=1 J=1-0, v=2 J=1-0 and v=1 J=2-1 SiO maser emission toward the supergiant star VY CMa. These observations used the VLBA at λ=7mm and λ=3mm over two epochs. The goal is to use the relative characteristics and spatial distribution of the transitions in individual resolved maser components to provide observational constraints on SiO maser excitation and pumping models. We find that many v=1 J=1-0 and v=2 J=1-0 features overlap in the second observing epoch, at comparable sensitivity. The v=2 J=1-0 emission is…
We have examined the relationship between the velocity parameters of SiO masers and the phase of the long period variable stars (LPVs) from which the masers originate. The SiO spectra from the v=1, J=1-0 (43.122 GHz; hereafter $J_{1\rightarrow0}$) and the v=1, J=2-1 (86.2434 GHz; hereafter $J_{2\rightarrow1}$) transitions have been measured using the Mopra Telescope of the Australia Telescope National Facility. One hundred twenty one sources have been observed including 47 LPVs contained in the American Association of Variable Star Observer Bulletin (2011). The epoch of maxima and the periods …
We collect all published OH, H2O, SiO and CH3OH masers in literature. The associated infrared sources of these four masers were identified with MSX PSC catalogues. We look for common infrared properties among the sources associated with four masers and make a statistical study. The MSX sources associated with stellar OH, stellar H2O and SiO masers concentrated in a small regions and the MSX sources associated with interstellar OH, interstellar H2O and CH3OH masers also concentrated in a small regions in an [A]-[D].vs.[A][-[E] diagram. These results give us new criterion to search for coexistin…
We performed simultaneous observations of the H2O 6(1,6) - 5(2,3) (22.235080 GHz) and SiO v= 1, 2, J = 1 - 0, SiO v = 1, J = 2 - 1, 3 - 2 (43.122080, 42.820587, 86.243442, and 129.363359 GHz) masers towards the suspected D-type symbiotic star, V627 Cas, using the Korean VLBI Network. Here, we present astrometrically registered maps of the H2O and SiO v = 1, 2, J = 1 - 0, SiO v = 1, J = 2 - 1 masers for five epochs from January 2016 to June 2018. Distributions of the SiO maser spots do not show clear ring-like structures, and those of the H2O maser are biased towards the north-north-west to wes…
Context. Stars on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) are long-period variables that present strong flux variations at almost all wavelengths, including the SiO maser lines. The periods of these variations are of 300-500 days in Mira-type stars and somewhat shorter in semi-regular variables. The variability of the SiO lines on short timescales has been investigated, but the data are inconclusive. Aims. We aim to study the time evolution of the SiO maser lines in Mira-type and semi-regular variables at short timescales. We also discuss the origin of the observed fast variations. Methods. We obser…
Simultaneous time monitoring observations of H$_{2}$O and SiO maser lines were performed toward the D-type symbiotic binary system V407 Cyg with the Korean VLBI Network single dish radio telescope. These monitoring observations were carried out from March 2, 2010 (optical phase $ϕ$ = 0.0), 8 days before the nova outburst on March 10, 2010 to June 5, 2014 ($ϕ$ = 2.13). Eight days before the nova outburst, we detected the SiO $v$ = 1, 2, $J$ = 1--0 maser lines which exhibited values of 0.51 K ($\sim$ 6.70 Jy) and 0.71 K ($\sim$ 9.30 Jy), respectively, while after the outburst we could not detect…
The full theory of polarized SiO maser emission from the near-circumstellar environment of Asymptotic Giant Branch stars has been the subject of debate, with theories ranging from classical Zeeman origins to predominantly non-Zeeman anisotropic excitation or propagation effects. Features with an internal electric vector position angle (EVPA) rotation of $\sim π/2$ offer unique constraints on theoretical models. In this work, results are presented for one such feature that persisted across five epochs of SiO $ν=1, J=1-0$ VLBA observations of TX Cam. We examine the fit to the predicted dependenc…
We present the results of SiO maser observations at 43GHz toward two AGB stars using the VLBA. Our preliminary results on the relative positions of the different J=1-0 SiO masers (v=1,2 and 3) indicate that the current ideas on SiO maser pumping could be wrong at some fundamental level. A deep revision of the SiO pumping models could be necessary.
We present the latest and final version of the movie of the SiO masers toward the Mira variable TX Cam. The new version consists of 112 frames (78 successfully reduced epochs) with data covering almost three complete stellar cycles between 24 May 1997 to 25 January 2002, observed with the VLBA. In this paper we examine the global morphology, kinematics and variability of the masering zone. The morphology of the emission is confined in a structure that usually resembles a ring or an ellipse, with occasional deviations due to localised phenomena. The ring appears to be contracting and expanding,…
The detailed polarization mechanisms of SiO masers originating from the near circum\-stellar environment of Asymptotic Giant Branch stars are not yet definitively known. Prevailing theories are broadly classified as either Zeeman or non-Zeeman in origin, the latter including effects such as anisotropic pumping or anisotropic resonant scattering. The predicted behavior of the linear and circular polarization fractions and electric vector position angle vary by theory. In particular, individual maser features that exhibit a rotation in linear polarization of $\sim π/2$ as a function of frequency…
We report on the time variation of SiO maser emission from the symbiotic stellar system V407 Cyg after the classical nova outburst on 2010 March 10. Although both the SiO $J=1$--0 $v=1$ and 2 lines at 43.122 and 42.821 GHz were found previously in the envelope of a mira in the binary system, only weak emission of the $J=1$--0 $v=2$ line has continuously been detectable after the nova outburst. The line profile exhibited a dramatic change several weeks after the burst; the component on the higher-velocity side of the systemic velocity disappeared two weeks after the burst, and a new persistent …
We have used the Very Large Array (VLA) at 7 mm wavelength to image five rotational transitions (J=1-0) from three SiO isotopologues towards Orion BN/KL: 28SiO v=0,1,2; and 29SiO and 30SiO v=0. For the first time, we have mapped the 29SiO and 30SiO J=1-0 emission, established the maser nature of the emission, and confirmed association with the deeply embedded high-mass young stellar object commonly denoted radio Source I. The 28SiO v=0 maser emission shows a bipolar structure that extends over ~700 AU along a northeast-southwest axis, and we propose that it traces a bipolar outflow driven by S…
We present the database of maser sources in H2O, OH and SiO lines that can be used to identify and study variable stars at evolved stages. Detecting the maser emission in H2O, OH and SiO molecules toward infrared-excess objects is one of the methods of identification long-period variables (LPVs, including Miras and Semi-Regular), because these stars exhibit maser activity in their circumstellar shells. Our sample contains 1803 known LPV objects. 46% of these stars (832 objects) manifest maser emission in the line of at least one molecule: H2O, OH or SiO. We use the database of circumstellar ma…
The v=1 and v=2 J=1-0 (43 GHz), and v=1 J=2-1 (86 GHz) SiO masers are intense in AGB stars and have been mapped using VLBI showing ring-like distributions. Those of the v=1, v=2 J=1-0 masers are similar, but the spots are rarely coincident, while the v=1 J=2-1 maser arises from a well separated region farther out. These relative locations can be explained by models tools that include the overlap of two IR lines of SiO and H2O. The v=3 J=1-0 line is not directly affected by any line overlap and its spot structure and position, relative to the other lines, is a good test to the standard pumping …
We present results on a search for 86.243 GHz SiO (J = 2 -- 1, v = 1) maser emission toward 67 OH/IR stars located near the Galactic Centre. We detected 32 spectral peaks, of which 28 correspond to SiO maser lines arising from the envelopes of these OH/IR stars. In OH/IR stars, we obtained an SiO maser detection rate of about 40%. We serendipitously detected two other lines from OH/IR stars at 86.18 GHz, which could be due to a CCS-molecule transition at 86.181 GHz or probably to an highly excited OH molecular transition at 86.178 GHz. The detection rate of 86 GHz maser emission is found to be…
In this Letter, we report detections of SiO v=3 J=1--0 maser emission in very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations towards 4 out of 12 long-period variable stars: WX Psc, R Leo, W Hya, and T Cep. The detections towards WX Psc and T Cep are new ones. We also present successful astrometric observations of SiO v=2 and v=3 J=1--0 maser emissions associated with two stars: WX Psc and W Hya and their position-reference continuum sources: J010746.0+131205 and J135146.8-291218 with the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA). The relative coordinates of the position-reference continuu…
We present an observational study of the vibrationally excited H$_{2}$O line at 658 GHz ($ν_{2}$=1, 1$_{1, 0}$-1$_{0, 1}$) toward Orion KL using the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). This line is clearly detected at the position of the massive protostar candidate, the Source I. The spatial structure is compact with a size of about 100 AU and is elongated along the northeast-southwest low-velocity (18 km s$^{-1}$) bipolar outflow traced by 22 GHz H$_{2}$O masers, SiO masers, and thermal SiO lines. A velocity gradient can be seen perpendicular to the bipolar outflow. Overall s…
We report the first detection of a radio-continuum and molecular jet associated with a dominant blue-shifted maser source, G353.273+0.641. A radio jet is extended 3000 au along NW-SE direction. H$_{2}$O masers are found to be clustered in the root of a bipolar radio jet. A molecular jet is detected by thermal SiO ($\upsilon$ = 0, $J$ = 2-1) emission. The SiO spectrum is extremely wide (-120 -- +87 km s$^{-1}$) and significantly blue-shift dominated, similar to the maser emission. The observed geometry and remarkable spectral similarity between H$_{2}$O maser and SiO strongly suggests the exist…
Aims. Red supergiants (RSGs) are among the most luminous of all stars, easily detectable in external galaxies, and may ideally serve as kinematic tracers of Galactic structure. Some RSGs are surrounded by circumstellar envelopes detectable by their dust and molecular and, in particular, maser emission. This study consists of a search for maser emission from silicon monoxide (SiO) toward a significant number of RSGs that are members of massive stellar clusters, many of which have only recently been discovered. Further, we aim to relate the occurrence of maser action to properties of the host st…
VLBI observations of SiO masers recover at most 40-50% of the total flux obtained by single dish observations at any spectral channel. Some previous studies seems to indicate that, at least, part of the lost flux is divided up into many weak components rather than in a large resolved emission area. Taking benefit of the high sensitivity and resolution of the HSA, we investigate the problem of the missing flux in VLBI observations of SiO maser emission at 7mm in the AGB stars and obtain a high dynamic range map of IRC+10011. We conclude that the missing flux is mostly contained in many very wea…
We present Submillimeter Array observations of high frequency SiO masers around the supergiant VX Sgr and the semi-regular variable star W Hya. The J=5-4, v=1 28SiO and v=0 29SiO masers of VX Sgr are shown to be highly linearly polarized with a polarization from ~5-60%. Assuming the continuum emission peaks at the stellar position, the masers are found within ~60 mas of the star, corresponding to ~100 AU at a distance of 1.57 kpc. The linear polarization vectors are consistent with a large scale magnetic field, with position and inclination angles similar to that of the dipole magnetic field i…
We report the results of Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of the Westerlund~1 (Wd1) region in the SiO v=1, J=1-0 and H2O 6(16)-5(23) maser lines, and we also report the analysis of maser properties of red supergiants (RSGs) associated with 6 massive clusters including Wd1. The primary purpose of this research is to explore possibilities of using maser emission for investigating the nature of massive clusters and associated RSGs. The SiO v=1, J=1-0 and H2O 6(16)-5(23) maser lines are detected toward 2 of 4 known RSGs in Wd1. The large velocity ranges of maser emission are c…
We present a time series of synoptic images of the linearly-polarized v=1, J=1-0 SiO maser emission toward the Mira variable, TX Cam. These data comprise 43 individual epochs at an approximate biweekly sampling over an optical pulsation phase range of 0.68 to 1.82. The images have an angular resolution of ~500 microarcsec and were obtained using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), operating in the 43 GHz band in spectral-line, polarization mode. We have previously published the total intensity time series for this pulsation phase range; this paper serves to present the linearly-polarized imag…
Using Science Verification data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA), we have identified and imaged five rotational transitions (J=5-4 and J=6-5) of the three silicon monoxide isotopologues 28SiO v=0, 1, 2 and 29SiO v=0 and 28Si18O v=0 in the frequency range from 214 to 246 GHz towards the Orion BN/KL region. The emission of the ground-state 28SiO, 29SiO and 28Si18O shows an extended bipolar shape in the northeast-southwest direction at the position of Radio Source I, indicating that these isotopologues trace an outflow (~18 km/s, P.A. ~50deg, ~5000 AU in diameter) that…
We report on the first 1,432 sources observed using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), from the Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamical Evolution (BAaDE) survey, which aims to obtain tens of thousands of line-of-sight velocities from SiO masers in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in the Milky Way. A 71% detection rate of 86 GHz SiO masers is obtained from the infrared color-selected sample, and increases to 80% when considering the likely oxygen-rich stars using Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) colors isolated in a region where [D]-[E] <= 1.38. Based on Galactic distributions,…
We investigate the use of 183 GHz H2O masers for characterization of the physical conditions and mass loss process in the circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars. We used APEX SEPIA Band 5 to observe the 183 GHz H2O line towards 2 Red Supergiant and 3 Asymptotic Giant Branch stars. Simultaneously, we observed lines in 28SiO v0, 1, 2 and 3, and for 29SiO v0 and 1. We detected the 183 GHz H2O line towards all the stars with peak flux densities greater than 100 Jy, including a new detection from VY CMa. Towards all 5 targets, the water line had indications of being due to maser emission and had …
We have used the JVLA at the 1 cm band to map five highly-excited metastable inversion transitions of ammonia, (J,K)=(6,6), (7,7), (9,9), (10,10), and (13,13), in W51 IRS2 with ~0.2 angular resolution. We present detections of both thermal (extended) ammonia emission in the five inversion lines, with rotational states ranging in energy from about 400 to 1700 K, and point-like ammonia maser emission in the (6,6), (7,7), and (9,9) lines. The thermal ammonia emits around a velocity of 60 km/s, near the cloud's systemic velocity, is elongated in the east-west direction across 4" and is confined by…
There are indications that the third known eruption of the recurrent nova T CrB is imminent, and multi-wavelength observations prior to the eruption are important to characterise the system before it erupts. T CrB is known to display the SiO fundamental vibrational feature at 8$\,μ$m. When the anticipated eruption occurs, it is possible that the shock produced when the ejected material runs into the wind of the red giant in the system may be traced using SiO maser emission. We have used the 100m Effelsberg Radio Telescope to search for $^{28}$SiO emission in the $\upsilon=1$, $\upsilon=2$, $J=…
Silicon monoxide maser emission has been detected in the circumstellar envelopes of many evolved stars in various vibrationally-excited rotational transitions. It is considered a good tracer of the wind dynamics close to the photosphere of the star. We have investigated the polarization morphology in the circumstellar envelope of an AGB star, R Cas. We mapped the linear and circular polarization of SiO masers in the v=1, J=1-0 transition. The linear polarization is typically a few tens of percent while the circular polarization is a few percent. The fractional polarization tends to be higher f…
We report on the astrometric registration of VLBI images of the SiO and water masers in OH231.8+4.2, the iconic Proto-Planetary Nebula also known as the Calabash nebula, using the KVN and Source/Frequency Phase Referencing. This, for the first time, robustly confirms the alignment of the SiO masers, close to the AGB star, driving the bi-lobe structure with the water masers in the out-flow. We are able to trace the bulk motions for the water masers over the last few decades to be 19 km/s and deduce that the age of this expansion stage is 38$\pm$2 years. The combination of this result with the d…
We explored an efficient method to identify evolved stars with oxygen-rich envelopes in the late AGB or post-AGB phase of stellar evolution, which include a rare class of objects - the "water fountains". Our method considers the OH and H2O maser spectra, the near infrared Q-parameters (these are colour indices accounting for the effect of extinction), and far-infrared AKARI colours. Here we first present the results of a new survey on OH and H2O masers. There were 108 colour-selected objects: 53 of them were observed in the three OH maser lines (1612, 1665, and 1667 MHz), with 24 detections (1…

We present multi-epoch VLBA imaging of the 28SiO v=1 & v=2, J=1-0 maser emission toward the massive YSO Orion Source I. Both SiO transitions were observed simultaneously with an angular resolution of ~0.5 mas (~0.2 AU for d=414 pc). Here we explore the global properties and kinematics of the emission through two 19-epoch animated movies spanning 21 months (2001 March 19 to 2002 December 10). These movies provide the most detailed view to date of the dynamics and temporal evolution of molecular material within ~20-100 AU of a massive (~>8M_sun) YSO. The bulk of the SiO masers surrounding Source…
We present results of 3 mm observations of SiO maser sources in the Galactic Centre (GC) from observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array between $2010-2014$, along the transitions of the SiO molecule at $v = 1, J = 2-1$ at 86.243 GHz and $v = 2, J = 2-1$ at 85.640 GHz. We also present the results of the 3 mm observations with Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). We detected 5 maser sources from the ATCA data, IRS 7, IRS 9, IRS 10EE, IRS 12N, and IRS 28; and 20 sources from the ALMA data including 4 new sources. These sources are predominantly late-type giants or em…
The IRAS source, 19312+1950, exhibits SiO maser emission, which is predominantly detected in evolved stars enshrouded by a cold molecular envelope. In fact, the mojority of the observational properties of IRAS 19312+1950 is consistent with the nature of an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star or post-AGB star. Interestingly, however, some of the observational properties cannot be readily explained within the standard scheme of stellar evolution, and those are rather reminiscent of young stellar objects. In the present research we considered the evolutionary status of IRAS 19312+1950 as revealed …
We present the result of radio observations of red supergiants in the star cluster, Stephenson's #2, and candidates for red supergiants in the star clusters, Mercer et al. (2005)'s #4, #8, and #13, in the SiO and H$_2$O maser lines. The Stephenson's #2 cluster and nearby aggregation at the South-West contain more than 15 red supergiants. We detected one at the center of Stephenson's #2 and three in the south-west aggregation in the SiO maser line, and three of these 4 were also detected in the H2O maser line. The average radial velocity of the 4 detected objects is 96 km s^{-1}, giving a kinema…
We present multi-epoch observations with the VLBA of SiO maser emission in the v=1, J=1-0 transition at 43 GHz from the remnant of the red nova V838 Mon. We model the positions of maser spots to derive a parallax of 0.166+/-0.060 mas. Combining this parallax with other distance information results in a distance of 5.6+/-0.5 kpc, which agrees with an independent geometric distance of 6.1+/-0.6 kpc from modeling polarimetry images of V838 Mon's light echo. Combining these results, and including a weakly constraining Gaia DR2 parallax, yields a best estimate of distance of 5.9+/-0.4 kpc. The mase…
We present an analysis of velocity parameters derived from multi-epoch observations of the SiO maser spectra of 47 long period variables (LPVs). The velocity parameters are important to inform and constrain theoretical models of SiO maser emission and to extract information on binary orbits. Mira and R Aquarii (R Aqr) are two known binaries included in the program. The 47 LPVs are among 121 sources of the Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) Mopra telescope's monitoring program. Observations were carried out several times a year between 2008 and 2012 and are continuing. The SiO spectra…
This paper presents a component-level comparison of the polarized v=1 J =1-0, v=2 J=1-0 and v=1 J=2-1 SiO maser emission towards the supergiant star VY CMa at milliarcsecond-scale, as observed using the VLBA at $λ=7$mm and $λ=3$mm. An earlier paper considered overall maser morphology and constraints on SiO maser excitation and pumping derived from these data. The goal of the current paper is to use the measured polarization properties of individual co-spatial components detected across multiple transitions to provide constraints on several competing theories for the transport of polarized mase…
We present 3D velocity measurements and acceleration limits for stars within a few parsec of the Galactic Center (GC) black hole, Sgr A*, based on observations of 43 and 86 GHz circumstellar maser emission. Observations were taken with the Very Large Array (VLA) in 2013, 2014, and 2020 and with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in 2015 and 2017. We detect 28 masers in total, of which four are new detections. Combining these data with extant maser astrometry, we calculate stellar proper motions and accelerations with uncertainties as low as ~10 $μ$as yr$^{-1}$ and 0.5 $μ$a…

We report astrometric results of phase-referencing VLBI observations of 43 GHz SiO maser emission toward the red hypergiant VY Canis Majoris (\vycma) using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). We measured a trigonometric parallax of 0.83 $\pm$ 0.08 mas, corresponding to a distance of 1.20$^{+0.13}_{-0.10}$ kpc. Compared to previous studies, the spatial distribution of SiO masers has changed dramatically, while its total extent remains similar. The internal motions of the maser spots are up to 1.4 \masy, corresponding to 8 \kms, and show a tendency for expansion. After modeling the expansion of…
OH231.8+4.2 is an archetypal pre-planetary nebulae (pPN). It is a binary system surrounded by bipolar nebula. Some years ago the authors extensively studied it and performed several VLBI observations from which they obtained mas-resolution maps of the SiO (7 mm) and H2O (1.3 cm) maser emissions. H2O masers were found to be distributed in two areas along the symmetry axis of the nebulae oriented nearly north-south delineating a bipolar outflow and their astrometric positions were accurately measured. SiO masers, indicating the position of the Mira component of the binary system, form a structur…
