We present the latest and final version of the movie of the SiO masers toward the Mira variable TX Cam. The new version consists of 112 frames (78 successfully reduced epochs) with data covering almost three complete stellar cycles between 24 May 1997 to 25 January 2002, observed with the VLBA. In this paper we examine the global morphology, kinematics and variability of the masering zone. The morphology of the emission is confined in a structure that usually resembles a ring or an ellipse, with occasional deviations due to localised phenomena. The ring appears to be contracting and expanding, although for the first cycle contraction is not observed. The width and outer boundary of the masering zone follow the stellar pulsation. Our data seem to be consistent with a shock being created once per stellar cycle at maximum that propagates with a velocity of ~7 km/s. The difference in velocities along different axes strongly suggests that the outflow in TX Cam is bipolar. The contribution of projection is examined and our results are compared with the latest theoretical model.
SiO maser emission occurs in the extended atmosphere of evolved stars and can be studied at high angular resolution. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of Mira variables indicate that SiO masers are significantly linearly polarized with linear polarization fraction up to 100%. However, no information is available at high angular resolution for SiO masers in higher mass loss OH/IR stars. We extend the VLBI SiO maser studies to OH/IR stars. The observations enable us to understand the SiO pumping mechanisms in higher mass loss evolved objects and compare those with Mira variab…
This paper presents a milliarcsecond-scale comparison of the polarised component-level v=1 J=1-0, v=2 J=1-0 and v=1 J=2-1 SiO maser emission toward the supergiant star VY CMa. These observations used the VLBA at λ=7mm and λ=3mm over two epochs. The goal is to use the relative characteristics and spatial distribution of the transitions in individual resolved maser components to provide observational constraints on SiO maser excitation and pumping models. We find that many v=1 J=1-0 and v=2 J=1-0 features overlap in the second observing epoch, at comparable sensitivity. The v=2 J=1-0 emission is…
We report astrometric results of phase-referencing VLBI observations of 43 GHz SiO maser emission toward the red hypergiant VY Canis Majoris (\vycma) using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). We measured a trigonometric parallax of 0.83 $\pm$ 0.08 mas, corresponding to a distance of 1.20$^{+0.13}_{-0.10}$ kpc. Compared to previous studies, the spatial distribution of SiO masers has changed dramatically, while its total extent remains similar. The internal motions of the maser spots are up to 1.4 \masy, corresponding to 8 \kms, and show a tendency for expansion. After modeling the expansion of…
Radio and infrared interferometry of SiO maser stars provide complementary information on the atmosphere and circumstellar environment at comparable spatial resolution. Here, we present the latest results on the atmospheric structure and the dust condensation region of AGB stars based on our recent infrared spectro-interferometric observations, which represent the environment of SiO masers. We discuss, as an example, new results from simultaneous VLTI and VLBA observations of the Mira variable AGB star R Cnc, including VLTI near- and mid-infrared interferometry, as well as VLBA observations of…
This paper presents a component-level comparison of the polarized v=1 J =1-0, v=2 J=1-0 and v=1 J=2-1 SiO maser emission towards the supergiant star VY CMa at milliarcsecond-scale, as observed using the VLBA at $λ=7$mm and $λ=3$mm. An earlier paper considered overall maser morphology and constraints on SiO maser excitation and pumping derived from these data. The goal of the current paper is to use the measured polarization properties of individual co-spatial components detected across multiple transitions to provide constraints on several competing theories for the transport of polarized mase…
The full theory of polarized SiO maser emission from the near-circumstellar environment of Asymptotic Giant Branch stars has been the subject of debate, with theories ranging from classical Zeeman origins to predominantly non-Zeeman anisotropic excitation or propagation effects. Features with an internal electric vector position angle (EVPA) rotation of $\sim π/2$ offer unique constraints on theoretical models. In this work, results are presented for one such feature that persisted across five epochs of SiO $ν=1, J=1-0$ VLBA observations of TX Cam. We examine the fit to the predicted dependenc…
We present the results of SiO maser observations at 43GHz toward two AGB stars using the VLBA. Our preliminary results on the relative positions of the different J=1-0 SiO masers (v=1,2 and 3) indicate that the current ideas on SiO maser pumping could be wrong at some fundamental level. A deep revision of the SiO pumping models could be necessary.
We present the first images of the 28SiO v=1, J=2-1 maser emission around the closest known massive young stellar object Orion Source I observed at 86 GHz (3mm) with the VLBA. These images have high spatial (~0.3 mas) and spectral (~0.054 km/s) resolutions. We find that the 3mm masers lie in an X-shaped locus consisting of four arms, with blue-shifted emission in the south and east arms and red-shifted emission in the north and west arms. Comparisons with previous images of the 28SiO v=1,2, J=1-0 transitions at 7mm (observed in 2001-2002) show that the bulk of the J=2-1 transition emission fol…
Simultaneous time monitoring observations of H$_{2}$O $6_{16}-5_{23}$, SiO $J$ = 1--0, 2--1, 3--2, and $^{29}$SiO $v$ = 0, $J$ = 1--0 lines were carried out in the direction of the Mira variable star TX Cam with the Korean VLBI Network single dish radio telescopes. For the first time, the H$_{2}$O maser emission from TX Cam was detected near the stellar velocity at five epochs from April 10, 2013 ($ϕ$ = 3.13) to June 4, 2014 ($ϕ$ = 3.89) including minimum optical phases. The intensities of H$_{2}$O masers are very weak compared to SiO masers. The variation of peak antenna temperature ratios am…
We present a time series of synoptic images of the linearly-polarized v=1, J=1-0 SiO maser emission toward the Mira variable, TX Cam. These data comprise 43 individual epochs at an approximate biweekly sampling over an optical pulsation phase range of 0.68 to 1.82. The images have an angular resolution of ~500 microarcsec and were obtained using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), operating in the 43 GHz band in spectral-line, polarization mode. We have previously published the total intensity time series for this pulsation phase range; this paper serves to present the linearly-polarized imag…
We present multi-epoch VLBA imaging of the 28SiO v=1 & v=2, J=1-0 maser emission toward the massive YSO Orion Source I. Both SiO transitions were observed simultaneously with an angular resolution of ~0.5 mas (~0.2 AU for d=414 pc). Here we explore the global properties and kinematics of the emission through two 19-epoch animated movies spanning 21 months (2001 March 19 to 2002 December 10). These movies provide the most detailed view to date of the dynamics and temporal evolution of molecular material within ~20-100 AU of a massive (~>8M_sun) YSO. The bulk of the SiO masers surrounding Source…
We present multi-epoch observations with the VLBA of SiO maser emission in the v=1, J=1-0 transition at 43 GHz from the remnant of the red nova V838 Mon. We model the positions of maser spots to derive a parallax of 0.166+/-0.060 mas. Combining this parallax with other distance information results in a distance of 5.6+/-0.5 kpc, which agrees with an independent geometric distance of 6.1+/-0.6 kpc from modeling polarimetry images of V838 Mon's light echo. Combining these results, and including a weakly constraining Gaia DR2 parallax, yields a best estimate of distance of 5.9+/-0.4 kpc. The mase…
OH231.8+4.2 is an archetypal pre-planetary nebulae (pPN). It is a binary system surrounded by bipolar nebula. Some years ago the authors extensively studied it and performed several VLBI observations from which they obtained mas-resolution maps of the SiO (7 mm) and H2O (1.3 cm) maser emissions. H2O masers were found to be distributed in two areas along the symmetry axis of the nebulae oriented nearly north-south delineating a bipolar outflow and their astrometric positions were accurately measured. SiO masers, indicating the position of the Mira component of the binary system, form a structur…
The detailed polarization mechanisms of SiO masers originating from the near circum\-stellar environment of Asymptotic Giant Branch stars are not yet definitively known. Prevailing theories are broadly classified as either Zeeman or non-Zeeman in origin, the latter including effects such as anisotropic pumping or anisotropic resonant scattering. The predicted behavior of the linear and circular polarization fractions and electric vector position angle vary by theory. In particular, individual maser features that exhibit a rotation in linear polarization of $\sim π/2$ as a function of frequency…
A campaign of 35 epochs of milli-arcsec resolution VLBA observations of the archetype collidingwind WR+O star binary system WR140 show the wind-collision region (WCR) as a bow-shaped arc of emission that rotates as the highly eccentric orbit progresses. The observations comprise 21 epochs from the 1993- 2001 orbit, discussed by Dougherty et al. (2005), and 14 epochs from the 2001-2009 orbit, and span orbital phase 0.43 to 0.95. Assuming the WCR is symmetric about the line-of-centres of the two stars and "points" at the WR star, this rotation shows the O star moving from SE to E of the WR star …
In a rare and spectacular display, two well-known massive star forming regions, W49N and G25.65+1.05, recently underwent maser 'super burst' - their fluxes suddenly increasing above 30,000 and 18,000 Jy, respectively, reaching several orders of magnitude above their usual values. In quick-response, ToO observations with the EVN, VLBA and KaVA were obtained constituting a 4 week campaign - producing a high-cadence multi-epoch VLBI investigation of the maser emission. The combination of high-resolution, polarisation and flux monitoring during the burst provides one of the best accounts, to date,…
The prototypical Mira variable, $o$ Cet (Mira), has been observed as a Science Verification target in the 2014 ALMA Long Baseline Campaign with a longest baseline of 15 km. ALMA clearly resolves the images of the continuum and molecular line emission/absorption at an angular resolution of ~30 mas at 220 GHz. We image the data of the $^{28}$SiO v=0, 2 $J$=5-4 and H$_2$O $ν_2$=1 $J(K_a,K_c)$=5(5,0)-6(4,3) transitions and extract spectra from various lines-of-sight towards Mira's extended atmosphere. In the course of imaging, we encountered ambiguities in the resulting images and spectra that app…
We report VLBI monitoring observations of the 22 GHz water (H$_{2}$O) masers around the Mira variable BX Cam, which were carried out as a part of the EAVN Synthesis of Stellar Maser Animations (ESTEMA) project. Data of 37 epochs in total were obtained from 2018 May to 2021 June with a time interval of 3-4 weeks, spanning approximately three stellar pulsation periods ($P= \sim$440 d). In particular, the dual-beam system equipped on the VERA stations was used to measure the kinematics and parallaxes of the H$_{2}$O maser features. The measured parallax, $π=1.79\pm 0.08$ mas, is consistent with $…
