We present 3D velocity measurements and acceleration limits for stars within a few parsec of the Galactic Center (GC) black hole, Sgr A*, based on observations of 43 and 86 GHz circumstellar maser emission. Observations were taken with the Very Large Array (VLA) in 2013, 2014, and 2020 and with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in 2015 and 2017. We detect 28 masers in total, of which four are new detections. Combining these data with extant maser astrometry, we calculate stellar proper motions and accelerations with uncertainties as low as ~10 $μ$as yr$^{-1}$ and 0.5 $μ$as yr$^{-2}$, respectively, corresponding to approximately 0.5 km s$^{-1}$ and 0.04 km s$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ at a distance of 8 kpc. We measure radial velocities from maser spectra with ~0.5 km s$^{-1}$ uncertainties, though the precision and accuracy of such measurements for deducing the underlying stellar velocities are limited by the complex spectral profiles of some masers. We therefore measure radial acceleration limits with typical uncertainties of ~0.1 km s$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$. We analyze the resulting 3D velocities and accelerations with respect to expected motions resulting from models of the mass distribution in the GC.
We collect all published OH, H2O, SiO and CH3OH masers in literature. The associated infrared sources of these four masers were identified with MSX PSC catalogues. We look for common infrared properties among the sources associated with four masers and make a statistical study. The MSX sources associated with stellar OH, stellar H2O and SiO masers concentrated in a small regions and the MSX sources associated with interstellar OH, interstellar H2O and CH3OH masers also concentrated in a small regions in an [A]-[D].vs.[A][-[E] diagram. These results give us new criterion to search for coexistin…
We performed simultaneous observations of the H2O 6(1,6) - 5(2,3) (22.235080 GHz) and SiO v= 1, 2, J = 1 - 0, SiO v = 1, J = 2 - 1, 3 - 2 (43.122080, 42.820587, 86.243442, and 129.363359 GHz) masers towards the suspected D-type symbiotic star, V627 Cas, using the Korean VLBI Network. Here, we present astrometrically registered maps of the H2O and SiO v = 1, 2, J = 1 - 0, SiO v = 1, J = 2 - 1 masers for five epochs from January 2016 to June 2018. Distributions of the SiO maser spots do not show clear ring-like structures, and those of the H2O maser are biased towards the north-north-west to wes…
We present the results of SiO maser observations at 43GHz toward two AGB stars using the VLBA. Our preliminary results on the relative positions of the different J=1-0 SiO masers (v=1,2 and 3) indicate that the current ideas on SiO maser pumping could be wrong at some fundamental level. A deep revision of the SiO pumping models could be necessary.
We present results on a search for 86.243 GHz SiO (J = 2 -- 1, v = 1) maser emission toward 67 OH/IR stars located near the Galactic Centre. We detected 32 spectral peaks, of which 28 correspond to SiO maser lines arising from the envelopes of these OH/IR stars. In OH/IR stars, we obtained an SiO maser detection rate of about 40%. We serendipitously detected two other lines from OH/IR stars at 86.18 GHz, which could be due to a CCS-molecule transition at 86.181 GHz or probably to an highly excited OH molecular transition at 86.178 GHz. The detection rate of 86 GHz maser emission is found to be…
In this Letter, we report detections of SiO v=3 J=1--0 maser emission in very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations towards 4 out of 12 long-period variable stars: WX Psc, R Leo, W Hya, and T Cep. The detections towards WX Psc and T Cep are new ones. We also present successful astrometric observations of SiO v=2 and v=3 J=1--0 maser emissions associated with two stars: WX Psc and W Hya and their position-reference continuum sources: J010746.0+131205 and J135146.8-291218 with the VLBI Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA). The relative coordinates of the position-reference continuu…
Aims. Red supergiants (RSGs) are among the most luminous of all stars, easily detectable in external galaxies, and may ideally serve as kinematic tracers of Galactic structure. Some RSGs are surrounded by circumstellar envelopes detectable by their dust and molecular and, in particular, maser emission. This study consists of a search for maser emission from silicon monoxide (SiO) toward a significant number of RSGs that are members of massive stellar clusters, many of which have only recently been discovered. Further, we aim to relate the occurrence of maser action to properties of the host st…
VLBI observations of SiO masers recover at most 40-50% of the total flux obtained by single dish observations at any spectral channel. Some previous studies seems to indicate that, at least, part of the lost flux is divided up into many weak components rather than in a large resolved emission area. Taking benefit of the high sensitivity and resolution of the HSA, we investigate the problem of the missing flux in VLBI observations of SiO maser emission at 7mm in the AGB stars and obtain a high dynamic range map of IRC+10011. We conclude that the missing flux is mostly contained in many very wea…
We report on the first 1,432 sources observed using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), from the Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamical Evolution (BAaDE) survey, which aims to obtain tens of thousands of line-of-sight velocities from SiO masers in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in the Milky Way. A 71% detection rate of 86 GHz SiO masers is obtained from the infrared color-selected sample, and increases to 80% when considering the likely oxygen-rich stars using Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) colors isolated in a region where [D]-[E] <= 1.38. Based on Galactic distributions,…
We investigate the use of 183 GHz H2O masers for characterization of the physical conditions and mass loss process in the circumstellar envelopes of evolved stars. We used APEX SEPIA Band 5 to observe the 183 GHz H2O line towards 2 Red Supergiant and 3 Asymptotic Giant Branch stars. Simultaneously, we observed lines in 28SiO v0, 1, 2 and 3, and for 29SiO v0 and 1. We detected the 183 GHz H2O line towards all the stars with peak flux densities greater than 100 Jy, including a new detection from VY CMa. Towards all 5 targets, the water line had indications of being due to maser emission and had …
We present sensitive Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of SiO masers in the inner parsecs of the Galactic center (GC). We detected five SiO J=2-1, v=1 (86 GHz) masers in the innner 25 arcsec (1 pc) of the GC. All the detected 86 GHz SiO masers are previously known SiO J=1-0, v=1 (43 GHz) masers and associated with late-type stars. Eighteen 43 GHz SiO masers were detected within 50 arcsec (2 pc) of Sagittarius A*. Among them, seven are detected for the first time, which brings the total number of 43 GHz SiO masers to 22 in this region.
We present the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) observations of the SiO masers in the Galactic center in transitions of v=1, J=2--1 at 86 GHz and v=1, J=1--0 at 43 GHz. Two 86-GHz SiO masers were detected within the central parsec, and they are associated with IRS 10EE and IRS 15NE, respectively. We detected eighteen 43-GHz SiO masers within a projected separation of <2 pc from Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), among which seven masers are newly discovered from our observations. This raises the total number of 43-GHz SiO masers within the central 4 parsecs of the GC region to 22. Simultaneous o…
We present results of 3 mm observations of SiO maser sources in the Galactic Centre (GC) from observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array between $2010-2014$, along the transitions of the SiO molecule at $v = 1, J = 2-1$ at 86.243 GHz and $v = 2, J = 2-1$ at 85.640 GHz. We also present the results of the 3 mm observations with Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA). We detected 5 maser sources from the ATCA data, IRS 7, IRS 9, IRS 10EE, IRS 12N, and IRS 28; and 20 sources from the ALMA data including 4 new sources. These sources are predominantly late-type giants or em…
We present the result of radio observations of red supergiants in the star cluster, Stephenson's #2, and candidates for red supergiants in the star clusters, Mercer et al. (2005)'s #4, #8, and #13, in the SiO and H$_2$O maser lines. The Stephenson's #2 cluster and nearby aggregation at the South-West contain more than 15 red supergiants. We detected one at the center of Stephenson's #2 and three in the south-west aggregation in the SiO maser line, and three of these 4 were also detected in the H2O maser line. The average radial velocity of the 4 detected objects is 96 km s^{-1}, giving a kinema…
This paper presents a component-level comparison of the polarized v=1 J =1-0, v=2 J=1-0 and v=1 J=2-1 SiO maser emission towards the supergiant star VY CMa at milliarcsecond-scale, as observed using the VLBA at $λ=7$mm and $λ=3$mm. An earlier paper considered overall maser morphology and constraints on SiO maser excitation and pumping derived from these data. The goal of the current paper is to use the measured polarization properties of individual co-spatial components detected across multiple transitions to provide constraints on several competing theories for the transport of polarized mase…
We report on the astrometric registration of VLBI images of the SiO and water masers in OH231.8+4.2, the iconic Proto-Planetary Nebula also known as the Calabash nebula, using the KVN and Source/Frequency Phase Referencing. This, for the first time, robustly confirms the alignment of the SiO masers, close to the AGB star, driving the bi-lobe structure with the water masers in the out-flow. We are able to trace the bulk motions for the water masers over the last few decades to be 19 km/s and deduce that the age of this expansion stage is 38$\pm$2 years. The combination of this result with the d…
We conducted an SiO maser survey towards 221 O-rich AGB stars with the aim of identifying maser emission associated with the Sagittarius stellar stream. In this survey, maser emission was detected in 44 targets, of which 35 were new detections. All of these masers are within 5 kpc of the Sun. We also compiled a Galactic SiO maser catalogue including ~2300 SiO masers from the literature. The distribution of these SiO masers give a scale height of 0.40 kpc, while 42 sources deviate from the Galactic plane by more than 1.2 kpc, half of which were found in this survey. Regarding SiO masers in the …
We present multi-epoch observations with the VLBA of SiO maser emission in the v=1, J=1-0 transition at 43 GHz from the remnant of the red nova V838 Mon. We model the positions of maser spots to derive a parallax of 0.166+/-0.060 mas. Combining this parallax with other distance information results in a distance of 5.6+/-0.5 kpc, which agrees with an independent geometric distance of 6.1+/-0.6 kpc from modeling polarimetry images of V838 Mon's light echo. Combining these results, and including a weakly constraining Gaia DR2 parallax, yields a best estimate of distance of 5.9+/-0.4 kpc. The mase…
We have discovered a new H$_2$CO (formaldehyde) $1_{1,0}-1_{1,1}$ 4.82966 GHz maser in Galactic Center Cloud C, G0.38+0.04. At the time of acceptance, this is the eighth region containing an H$_2$CO maser detected in the Galaxy. Cloud C is one of only two sites of confirmed high-mass star formation along the Galactic Center Ridge, affirming that H$_2$CO masers are exclusively associated with high-mass star formation. This discovery led us to search for other masers, among which we found new SiO vibrationally excited masers, making this the fourth star-forming region in the Galaxy to exhibit Si…
We present multi-epoch, total intensity, high-resolution images of 43GHz, v=1, J=1-0 SiO maser emission toward the Mira variable R Cas. In total we have 23 epochs of data for R Cas at approximate monthly intervals over an optical pulsation phase range from 0.158 to 1.78. These maps show a ring-like distribution of the maser features in a shell, which is assumed to be centred on the star at a radius of 1.6 to 2.3 times the stellar radii. It is clear from these images that the maser emission is significantly extended around the star. At some epochs a faint outer arc can be seen at 2.2 stellar ra…
OH231.8+4.2 is an archetypal pre-planetary nebulae (pPN). It is a binary system surrounded by bipolar nebula. Some years ago the authors extensively studied it and performed several VLBI observations from which they obtained mas-resolution maps of the SiO (7 mm) and H2O (1.3 cm) maser emissions. H2O masers were found to be distributed in two areas along the symmetry axis of the nebulae oriented nearly north-south delineating a bipolar outflow and their astrometric positions were accurately measured. SiO masers, indicating the position of the Mira component of the binary system, form a structur…
Observations of dust-enshrouded evolved stars selected from infrared catalogs requiring high positional accuracy, like infrared spectroscopy or long baseline radio interferometric observations, often require preparational observational steps determining a position with an accuracy much better than 1". Using phase-referencing observations with the Very Large Array at its highest resolution, we have compared the positions of SiO 43 GHz masers in evolved stars, assumed to originate in their infrared detected circumstellar shells, with the positions listed in the MSX, WISE, 2MASS, and Gaia catalog…
A group of Mira variables in the solar neighborhood show unusual spatial motion in the Galaxy. To study this motion in a much larger scale in the Galaxy, we newly surveyed 134 evolved stars off the Galactic plane by SiO maser lines, obtaining accurate radial velocities of 84 detected stars. Together with the past data of SiO maser sources, we analyzed the radial velocity data of a large sample of sources distributing in a distance range of about 0.3 -- 6 kpc in the first Galactic quadrant. At the Galactic longitudes between 20 and 40 deg, we found a group of stars with large negative radial ve…
(Abridged) The goal of this work is to investigate if SiO, H2O and HCN maser emission within the ALMA frequency range can be detected with observable levels of fractional linear polarization in the regime where the Zeeman frequency (gOmega) is greater than the stimulated emission rate (R) and the decay rate of the molecular state (Gamma). We have used a radiative transfer code to calculate the fractional linear polarization as a function of the emerging brightness temperature for a number of rotational transition of SiO, H2O and HCN which have been observed to display maser emission at submill…
We use Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Band 5 science verification observations of the red supergiant VY CMa to study the polarization of SiO thermal/masers lines and dust continuum at ~1.7 mm wavelength. We analyse both linear and circular polarization and derive the magnetic field strength and structure, assuming the polarization of the lines originates from the Zeeman effect, and that of the dust originates from aligned dust grains. We also discuss other effects that could give rise to the observed polarization. We detect, for the first time, significant polarization (~3%) of t…
We present an 86 GHz SiO (v = 1, J = 2 ---> 1) maser search toward late-type stars located within |b|<0.5 deg and 20 deg < l < 50 deg. This search is an extension at longer longitudes of a previously published work. We selected 135 stars from the MSX catalog using color and flux criteria and detected 92 (86 new detections). The detection rate is 68%, the same as in our previous study. The last few decades have seen the publication of several catalogs of point sources detected in infrared surveys (MSX, 2MASS, DENIS, ISOGAL, WISE, GLIMPSE, AKARI, and MIPSGAL). We searched each catalog for data o…
We present the first images of the 28SiO v=1, J=2-1 maser emission around the closest known massive young stellar object Orion Source I observed at 86 GHz (3mm) with the VLBA. These images have high spatial (~0.3 mas) and spectral (~0.054 km/s) resolutions. We find that the 3mm masers lie in an X-shaped locus consisting of four arms, with blue-shifted emission in the south and east arms and red-shifted emission in the north and west arms. Comparisons with previous images of the 28SiO v=1,2, J=1-0 transitions at 7mm (observed in 2001-2002) show that the bulk of the J=2-1 transition emission fol…
We observed the 43 GHz v=1, 2, and 3 and 86 GHz v=1 SiO maser transitions quasi-simultaneously for a Mira-variable-dominated sample of over 80 sources from the Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamical Evolution (BAaDE) project, using ATCA, and statistically compared the relative line strengths. On average, the 43 GHz v=1 line is brighter than the 86 GHz v=1 line by a factor of 1.36+/-0.15. As a result, an 86 GHz v=1 observed sample can be observed to 85.9% of the distance of a 43 GHz v=1 observed sample using the same sensitivity. We discuss what impact this may have on the BAaDE Galactic plane survey …
In order to study the streaming motions of miras in the Solar neighborhood, we newly surveyed 379 red variables in the SiO maser lines at 42.821 and 43.122 GHz with the Nobeyama 45m radio telescope. Accurate radial velocities were obtained for 229 (220 new) detected stars. The sample is selected from optical variables found by new automated surveys: the Northern Sky Variability Survey and the All Sky Automated Survey. The new sample consists of the "bluer" objects compared with those observed in the previous SiO surveys. The distances to the objects are estimated using the period-luminosity re…
We present the first results from the MALT-45 (Millimetre Astronomer's Legacy Team - 45 GHz) Galactic Plane survey. We have observed 5 square-degrees ($l = 330 - 335$, $b = \pm0.5$) for spectral lines in the 7 mm band (42-44 and 48-49 GHz), including $\text{CS}$ $(1-0)$, class I $\text{CH}_3\text{OH}$ masers in the $7(0,7)-6(1,6)$ $\text{A}^{+}$ transition and $\text{SiO}$ $(1-0)$ $v=0,1,2,3$. MALT-45 is the first unbiased, large-scale, sensitive spectral line survey in this frequency range. In this paper, we present data from the survey as well as a few intriguing results; rigorous analyses o…
We observed polarization of the SiO rotational transitions from Orion Source I (SrcI) to probe the magnetic field in bipolar outflows from this high mass protostar. Both 43 GHz $J$=1-0 and 86 GHz $J$=2-1 lines were mapped with $\sim$20 AU resolution, using the Very Large Array (VLA) and Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA), respectively. The $^{28}$SiO transitions in the ground vibrational state are a mixture of thermal and maser emission. Comparison of the polarization position angles in the $J$=1-0 and $J$=2-1 transitions allows us to set an upper limit on possible Faraday rot…
Using a subsample of the Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamical Evolution (BAaDE) survey of stellar SiO masers, we explore the prevalence and characteristics of $^{28}$SiO $J=1-0, v=0$ emission. We identify 90 detections of maser, thermal, or composite $^{28}$SiO $J=1-0, v=0$ emission out of approximately 13,000 candidate spectra from the NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA). We find that the detected sources are likely asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars belonging to a bright, foreground Milky Way stellar disk population. For the 32 sources showing thermal components, we extract values for ou…
The observational counterparts of theoretically predicted first hydrostatic cores (FHSC) have been searched for in the interstellar medium for nearly two decades now. Distinguishing them from other types of more evolved but still embedded objects remains a challenge because these objects have a short lifetime, are small, and embedded in a dense cocoon. One possible lead to finding them is the characterization of the outflows that are launched by these objects. We observed the L1451-mm FHSC candidate with the NOEMA interferometer in order to study the emission of several molecules. A nonlocal t…
Following an eruptive accretion event in NGC6334I-MM1, flares in the various maser species, including water masers, were triggered. We report the observed relative proper motion of the highly variable water masers associated with the massive star-forming region, NGC6334I. High velocity H$_2$O maser proper motions were detected in 5 maser clusters, CM2-W2 (bow-shock structure), MM1-W1, MM1-W3, UCHII-W1 and UCHII-W3. The overall average of the derived relative proper motion is 85 km s$^{-1}$. This mean proper motion is in agreement with the previous results from VLA multi-epoch observations. Our…
We present the first results from the BAaDE (Bulge Asymmetries and Dynamic Evolution) survey. Though only a subset of the complete survey ($\sim$2700 out of $\sim$20000 final sources), our data comprise the largest radio kinematic survey to date of stellar SiO masers observed toward the Galactic bulge and plane from $-15^\circ < l < +12^\circ$ and $-6^\circ < b < +6^\circ$. Our sources include a substantial number of line-of-sight (LoS) velocities in high extinction regions within $\pm 1^\circ$ of the Galactic plane. When matched with 2MASS photometry, our radio-detected sample lies significan…
VLBI multi-epoch water maser observations are a powerful tool to study the dense, warm shocked gas very close to massive protostars. The very high-angular resolution of these observations allow us to measure the proper motions of the masers in a few weeks, and together with the radial velocity, to determine their full kinematics. In this paper we present a summary of the main observational results obtained toward the massive star-forming regions of Cepheus A and W75N, among them: (i) the identification of different centers of high-mass star formation activity at scales of 100 AU; (ii) the disc…
A dynamic model of the Galaxy is constructed based on kinematic data for masers with trigonometric parallaxes. Maser data is used to compute the model potential in the Galactic plane. The potential is then generalized to three dimensions assuming the existence of a third quadratic integral of motion. The resulting Galactic model potential is of Stäckel's type. The corresponding space density function is determined from Poisson's equation.
In recent years, radio interferometric observations have achieved high accuracy in determining the absolute values of trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions of maser radiation sources and radio stars. The error in determining the trigonometric parallaxes of these objects averages about 10 microarcseconds, which allows us to confidently study the geometric and kinematic properties of the distribution of stars located at great distances from the Sun, up to the center of the Galaxy. This article provides an overview of the main results of studying the structure and kinematics of the Galaxy, …
Data on HII regions, molecular clouds, and methanol masers have been used to estimate the Sun's distance from the symmetry plane zo and the vertical disk scale height h. Kinematic distance estimates are available for all objects in these samples. The Local-arm (Orion-arm) objects are shown to affect noticeably the pattern of the z distribution. The deviations from the distribution symmetry are particularly pronounced for the sample of masers with measured trigonometric parallaxes, where the fraction of Local-arm masers is large. The situation with the sample of HII regions in the solar neighbo…
In Orion BN/KL, proper motions of 7 mm vibrationally-excited SiO masers trace rotation of a nearly edge-on disk and a bipolar wide-angle outflow 10-100 AU from radio Source I, a binary young stellar object (YSO) of ~20 Msun. Here we map ground-state 7 mm SiO emission with the Very Large Array and track proper motions over 9 years. The innermost and strongest emission lies in two extended arcs bracketing Source I. The proper motions trace a northeast-southwest bipolar outflow 100-1000 AU from Source I with a median 3D motion of ~18 km/s. An overlying distribution of 1.3 cm H2O masers betrays si…
The present paper focuses on the high-mass star-forming region G16.59-0.05. Methods: Using the VLBA and the EVN arrays, we conducted phase-referenced observations of the three most powerful maser species in G16.59-0.05: H2O at 22.2 GHz (4 epochs), CH3OH at 6.7 GHz (3 epochs), and OH at 1.665 GHz (1 epoch). In addition, we performed high-resolution (> 0".1), high-sensitivity (< 0.1 mJy) VLA observations of the radio continuum emission from the star-forming region at 1.3 and 3.6 cm. Results: This is the first work to report accurate measurements of the "relative" proper motions of the 6.7 GHz CH…
A 22 GHz water maser survey was conducted towards 178 O-rich AGB stars with the aim of identifying maser emission associated with the Sagittarius stellar stream. In this survey, maser emissions were detected in 21 targets, of which 20 were new detections. We studied the Galactic distributions of H2O and SiO maser-traced AGBs towards the Sgr orbital plane, and found an elongated structure towards the (l, b)~(340, 40) direction. In order to verify its association with the Sagittarius tidal stream, we further studied the 3D motions of these sources, but found, kinematically, these maser-traced AG…
We consider interesting results on the kinematics of the bulge, beginning with Mould's (1983) measurement of the velocity dispersion of the late M giants in the bulge, and carrying the discussion on to the present day, to discuss the largest survey ever undertaken of luminous SiO maser AGB stars. This SiO maser population of AGB stars is too luminous to have evolved from the oldest globular cluster age stellar population, yet has a velocity dispersion consistent with the oldest populations (the red clump stars) in the bulge. We identify two groups of maser stars by their kinematics; the subgro…
The infrared dark cloud G359.94+0.17 is a conspicuous, opaque cloud, which is seen in silhouette against the Galactic center. We found unexpectedly strong (~50 Jy) maser emission of CH3OH at 44 GHz with additional weak 22 GHz H2O maser and 43 GHz SiO thermal emissions toward this cloud. Detections of these molecular lines indicate that strong star forming activities are proceeding in this cloud, which were not reported previously despite of numerous works toward the Galactic center. The line profiles of the NH3 inversion lines at 23 GHz indicate that G359.94+0.17 is composed of mainly two clou…
