We investigate the nonexistence and existence of nontrivial positive solutions to $Δ_m u+u^p|\nabla u|^q\leq0$ on noncompact geodesically complete Riemannian manifolds, where $m>1$, and $(p,q)\in \mathbb{R}^2$. According to classification of $(p, q)$, we establish different volume growth conditions to obtain Liouville's theorems for the above quasilinear differential inequalities, and we also show these volume growth conditions are sharp in most cases. Moreover, the results are completely new for $(p, q)$ of negative pair, even in the Euclidean space.
We use the integral by parts to get a Liouville type theorem for a class quasilinear $p$-Laplace type equation on the sphere, this $p$-Laplace type equation arises from the study of asymptotic behavior near the origin for the semi-linear $p$-Laplace equation on the puncture ball $B_1(o) \subset R^n$. This gives a positive answer to L. Véron's question in a paper \cite{Veron92} and his book \cite{Veron} at page 440.
This work is devoted to the study of a Liouville comparison principle for entire weak solutions of quasilinear differential inequalities of the form $A(u) + |u|^{q-1}u \leq A(v) + |v|^{q-1}v$ on ${\Bbb R}^n$, where $n\geq 1$, $q$ is positive, and the operator $A(w)$ belongs to a class of the so-called $α$-monotone operators. Typical examples of such operators are the $p$-Laplacian and its well-known modifications. The results improve and supplement those in [1].
We find a solution of a quasilinear elliptic equation with Dirichlet's boundary condition on a smooth bounded domain and involving an unbounded continuous nonlinearity with oscillatory behavior near the origin.
In this article we study local and global properties of positive solutions of $-Δ_mu=|u|^{p-1}u+M|\nabla u|^q$ in a domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb R^N$, with $m>1$, $p,q>0$ and $M\in\mathbb R$. Following some ideas used in \cite{BV,Vron1}, and by using a direct Bernstein method combined with Keller-Osserman's estimate, we obtain several a priori estimates as well as Liouville type theorems. Moreover, we prove a local Harnack inequality with the help of Serrin's classical results.
We consider the elliptic quasilinear equation --$Δ$ m u = u p |$\nabla$u| q in R N with q $\ge$ m and p > 0, 1 < m < N. Our main result is a Liouville-type property, namely, all the positive C 1 solutions in R N are constant. We also give their asymptotic behaviour : all the solutions in an exterior domain R N \B r0 are bounded. The solutions in B r0 \ {0} can be extended as a continuous functions in B r0. The solutions in R N \ {0} has a finite limit l $\ge$ 0 as |x| $\rightarrow$ $\infty$. Our main argument is a Bernstein estimate of the gradient of a power of the solution, combined with a p…
In this work, we study a quasilinear elliptic problem involving the 1-laplacian operator, with a discontinuous, superlinear and subcritical nonlinearity involving the Heaviside function $H(\cdot - β)$. Our approach is based on an analysis of the associated p-laplacian problem, followed by a thorough analysis of the asymptotic behaviour or such solutions as $p \to 1^+$. We study also the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions, as $β\to 0^+$ and we prove that it converges to a solution of the original problem, without the discontinuity in the nonlinearity.
This paper is concerned with two properties of positive weak solutions of quasilinear elliptic equations with nonlinear gradient terms. First, we show a Liouville-type theorem for positive weak solutions of the equation involving the $m$-Laplacian operator \begin{equation*} -Δ_{m}u=u^q|\nabla u|^p\ \ \ \mathrm{in}\ \mathbb{R}^N, \end{equation*} where $N\geq1$, $m>1$ and $p,q\geq0$. The technique of Bernstein gradient estimates is ultilized to study the case $p<m$. Moreover, a Liouville-type theorem for supersolutions under subcritial range of exponents \begin{equation*} q(N-m)+p(N-1)<N(m-1) \e…
The mean field equation involving the $N$-Laplace operator and an exponential nonlinearity is considered in dimension $N\geq2$ on bounded domains with homogenoeus Dirichlet boundary condition. By a detailed asymptotic analysis we derive a quantization property in the non-compact case, yielding to the compactness of the solutions set in the so-called non-resonant regime. In such a regime, an existence result is then provided by a variational approach.
In this paper we consider the following quasilinear Schrödinger-Poisson system in a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$: $$ \left\{ \begin{array}[c]{ll} - Δu +ϕu = f(u) &\ \mbox{in } Ω, -Δϕ- \varepsilon^{4}Δ_4 ϕ= u^{2} & \ \mbox{in } Ω, u=ϕ=0 & \ \mbox{on } \partialΩ\end{array} \right. $$ depending on the parameter $\varepsilon>0$. The nonlinearity $f$ is assumed to have critical exponencial growth. We first prove existence of nontrivial solutions $(u_{\varepsilon}, ϕ_{\varepsilon})$ and then we show that as $\varepsilon\to0^{+}$ these solutions converges to a nontrivial solution of the associa…
We establish the existence of positive solutions for a nonlinear elliptic Dirichlet problem in dimension $N$ involving the $N$-Laplacian. The nonlinearity considered depends on the gradient of the unknown function and an exponential term. In such case, variational methods cannot be applied. Our approach is based on approximation scheme, where we consider a new class of normed spaces of finite dimension. As a particular case, we extended the result achieved by De Araujo and Montenegro [2016] for any $N>2$.
In this paper we prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to $ -Δ_p u = f(u) $ in half-spaces under zero Dirichlet boundary conditions, for $(2N+2)/(N+2) < p < 2$ and for a general class of regular changing-sign nonlinearities $f$. The techniques used in the proof of the main result are based on a fine use of comparison and maximum principles and on an adaptation of the celebrated moving plane method to quasilinear elliptic equations in unbounded domains.
In this paper we prove an existence result of multiple positive solutions for the following quasilinear problem \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}[c]{ll} -Δu - Δ(u^2)u = |u|^{p-2}u & \mbox{ in } Ωu= 0 &\mbox{ on } \partialΩ, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $Ω$ is a smooth and bounded domain in $\mathbb R^{N},N\geq3$. More specifically we prove that, for $p$ near the critical exponent $22^{*}=4N/(N-2)$, the number of positive solutions is estimated below by topological invariants of the domain $Ω$: the Ljusternick-Schnirelmann category and the Poincaré polynomial.
It is known that classical solutions to the one-dimensional quasilinear Smoluchowski-Poisson system with nonlinear diffusion $a(u)=(1+u)^{-p}$ may blow up in finite time if $p>1$ and exist globally if $p<1$. The case $p=1$ thus appears to be critical but it turns out that all solutions are global also in that case. Two classes of diffusion coefficients are actually identified in this paper, one for which all solutions to the corresponding quasilinear Smoluchowski-Poisson system are global and the other one leading to finite time blow-up for sufficiently concentrated initial data. The cornersto…
This paper deals with the existence of positive solution for the singular quasilinear Schrödinger equation $-Δu -Δ(u^{2})u=h(x) u^{-γ} + f(x,u)~\mbox{in} ~ Ω,$ where $γ> 1$, $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{N}, (N\geq 3)$ is a bounded smooth domain, $0<h\in L^{1}(Ω)$, $f$ is a measurable function that can change signal and can be sublinear or has critical growth. Inspired by Sun \cite{Y} we derive a compatible condition on the couple $(h(x),γ)$, which is optimal for the existence of $H_{0}^{1}$-solution for this problem.
We announce some new results for proving Hölder continuity of weak solutions to quasilinear parabolic equations whose prototype takes the form $$u_t - div (|\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u)= 0 \qquad \text{or} \qquad u_t - div (|u_{x_1}|^{p_1-2}u_{x_1},|u_{x_2}|^{p_2-2}u_{x_2},\ldots |u_{x_N}|^{p_N-2}u_{x_N})=0$$ and $1<\{p_1,p_2,\ldots,p_N\}<\infty$. We develop a new technique which is independent of the "method of intrinsic scaling" developed by E.DiBenedetto in the degenerate case ($p\geq 2$) and E.DiBenedetto and Y.Z.Chen in the singular case ($p\leq 2$) and instead uses a new and elementary linea…
For an open, bounded domain $\Om$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ which is strictly convex with $C^2$ boundary, we show that there exists a $\land>0$ such that the singular quasilinear problem \begin{eqnarray*} &-\delp u =\cfracλ{u^{\del}}+u^q\,\,\mbox{in}\,\,\Om\\ &u=0\,\,\mbox{on}\,\,\partial\Om;\, \,\,u>0\,\,\mbox{in}\,\,\Om \end{eqnarray*} admits atleast two solution $ u$ and $v$ in $W^{1,p}_{loc}(\Om)\cap L^{\infty}(\Om)$ for any $\del>0$ and $0<\lam<\land$ provided $1<p<N$ and $p-1<q<\frac{p(N-1)}{N-p}-1$.\\ Moreover the solutions $u$ and $v$ are such that $u^{\alp}$ and $v^{\alp}$ are in $W^{1,p}_0(\…
In this paper, we establish a local gradient estimate for a $p$-Lpalacian equation with a fast growing gradient nonlinearity. With this estimate, we can prove a parabolic Liouville theorem for ancient solutions satisfying some growth restriction near infinity.
The paper should be viewed as complement of an earlier result in [8]. In the paper just mentioned it is shown that 1d case of a quasilinear parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system is very special. Namely, unlike in higher dimensions, there is no critical nonlinearity. Indeed, for the nonlinear diffusion of the form 1/u all the solutions, independently on the magnitude of initial mass, stay bounded. However, the argument presented in [8] deals with the Jager-Luckhaus type system. And is very sensitive to this restriction. Namely, the change of variables introduced in [8], being a main step of th…
In this paper, we are concerned with the quasilinear Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} -Δu+V(x)u-uΔ(u^2)=g(u),\ \ x\in \mathbb{R}^{N}, \end{equation*} where $N\geq3$, $V$ is radially symmetric and nonnegative, and $g$ is asymptotically 3-linear at infinity. In the case of $\inf_{\mathbb{R}^N}V>0$, we show the existence of a least energy sign-changing solution with exactly one node, and for any integer $k>0$, there are a pair of sign-changing solutions with $k$ nodes. Moreover, in the case of $\inf_{\mathbb{R}^N}V=0$, the problem above admits a least energy sign-changing solution with exac…
This article is concerned with the existence of positive weak solutions for the following quasilinear Schrödinger Choquard equation: \begin{equation*} \begin{array}{cc} \displaystyle -div(g^2(u)\nabla u) + g(u)g'(u)\nabla u + a(x) u = k(x, u) \;\text{in} \; \mathbb{R}^N, \end{array} \end{equation*} where $N \geq 3$, $\displaystyle k(x,u) := h(x,u) + (I_{\vartheta}*|u|^{α\cdot2^*_μ})|u|^{α\cdot2^*_μ-2}u$, $g : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}^+$ is a differentiable even function with $g(0) = 1$ and $g'(t) \geq 0$ for all $t \geq 0$; $h\in C( \mathbb{R}^N \times\mathbb{R}, \mathbb{R})$ and the potentia…
In this paper, we consider the quasilinear Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} -Δu+V(x)u-uΔ(u^2)=g(u),\ \ x\in \mathbb{R}^{3}, \end{equation*} where $V$ and $g$ are continuous functions. Without the coercive condition on $V$ or the monotonicity condition on $g$, we show that the problem above has a least energy sign-changing solution and infinitely many sign-changing solutions. Our results especially solve the problem above in the case where $g(u)=|u|^{p-2}u$ ($2<p<4$) and complete some recent related works on sign-changing solutions, in the sense that, in the literature only the case $g(u)…
In this paper, we investigate the existence of solutions for a class of quasilinear elliptic system \begin{eqnarray*} \begin{cases}{ccc} -\mbox{div}(ϕ_1(|\nabla u|)\nabla u)+V_1(x)ϕ_1(|u|)u=λF_u(x, u,v), \ \ x\in \mathbb R^N, -\mbox{div}(ϕ_2(|\nabla v|)\nabla v)+V_2(x)ϕ_2(|v|)v=λF_v(x, u,v), \ \ x\in \mathbb R^N, u\in W^{1,Φ_1}(\mathbb R^N), v\in W^{1,Φ_2}(\mathbb R^N), \end{cases} \end{eqnarray*} where $N\ge 2$, $\inf_{\mathbb R^N}V_i(x)>0,i=1,2$, and $λ>0$. We obtain that when the nonlinear term $F$ satisfies some growth conditions only in a circle with center $0$ and radius $4$, system has …
In this paper, we establish Liouville type results for semilinear subelliptic systems associated with the sub-Laplacian on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^{n}$ involving two different kinds of general nonlinearities. The main technique of the proof is the method of moving planes combined with some integral inequalities replacing the role of maximum principles. As a special case, we obtain the Liouville theorem for the Lane-Emden system on the Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^{n}$, which also appears to be a new result in the literature.
In this paper, we are concerned with stable solutions to the fractional elliptic equation $$ (-Δ)^s u=e^u\mbox{ in }\mathbb R^{N}, $$ where $(-Δ)^s$ is the fractional Laplacian with $0<s<1$. We establish the nonexistence of stable solutions provided that $N<10s$. This result is optimal when $s\uparrow 1$.
In this paper, we deal with the Cauchy problem of the quasilinear Schödinger equation \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{lll} iu_t=Δu+2uh'(|u|^2)Δh(|u|^2)+(W(x)\ast|u|^2)u,\ x\in \mathbb{R}^N,\ t>0\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x),\quad x\in \mathbb{R}^N. \end{array}\right. \end{equation*} Here $h(s)$ and $W(x)$ are some real valued functions. Our focus is to investigate how the interplay between the potential $W(x)$ and the quasilinear presence $h(s)$ affects the blowup in finite time and global existence of the solution. In a special, we can obtain the watershed condition on $W(x)$ in the following sens…
We consider a quasilinear elliptic equation involving a first order term, under zero Dirichlet boundary condition in half spaces. We prove that any positive solution is monotone increasing w.r.t. the direction orthogonal to the boundary. The main ingredient in the proof is a new comparison principle in unbounded domains. As a consequence of our analysis, we also obtain some new Liouville type theorems.
We consider a quasilinear equation involving the $n-$Laplacian and an exponential nonlinearity, a problem that includes the celebrated Liouville equation in the plane as a special case. For a non-compact sequence of solutions it is known that the exponential nonlinearity converges, up to a subsequence, to a sum of Dirac measures. By performing a precise local asymptotic analysis we complete such a result by showing that the corresponding Dirac masses are quantized as multiples of a given one, related to the mass of limiting profiles after rescaling according to the classification result obtain…
We consider a system of quasilinear elliptic equations, with indefinite super-linear nonlinearity, depending on two real parameters $λ,μ$. By using the Nehari manifold and the notion of extremal parameter, we extend some results concerning existence of positive solutions.
Mountain pass in a suitable Orlicz space is employed to prove the existence of soliton solutions for a quasilinear Schrödinger equation involving critical exponent in ${\BR}^N$. These equations contain strongly singular nonlinearities which include derivatives of the second order. Such equations have been studied as models of several physical phenomena. The nonlinearity here corresponds to the superfluid film equation in plasma physics.
In this note, we study Liouville theorems for the stable and finite Morse index weak solutions of the quasilinear elliptic equation $-Δ_p u= f(x) F(u) $ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ where $p\ge 2$, $0\le f\in C(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and $F\in C^1(\mathbb{R})$. We refer to $f(x)$ as {\it weight} and to $F(u)$ as {\it nonlinearity}. The remarkable fact is that if the weight function is bounded from below by a strict positive constant that is $0<C\le f$ then it does not have much impact on the stable solutions, however, a nonnegative weight that is $0\le f$ will push certain critical dimensions. This analytical ob…
This paper is devoted to the existence and non-existence of positive solutions for a $(p, q)$-Laplacian system with indefinite nonlinearity depending on two parameters $(λ,μ)$. By using the sub-supersolution method together with adaptations of ideas found in \cite{AAS,CRMZ}, we extend some previous result.
We study long time existence for high dimensional quasilinear wave equations exterior to star-shaped obstacles. In particular, we obtain exterior domain analogs of the four dimensional results of Hörmander where the nonlinearity is permitted to depend on the solution not just its first and second derivatives. Previous proofs in exterior domains omitted this dependence as it did not mesh well with the energy methods in use.
In this work, we study the existence and multiplicity of solutions for a class of problems involving the $ϕ$-Laplacian operator in a bounded domain, where the nonlinearity has a critical growth. The main tool used is the variational method combined with the genus theory for even functionals.
We establish a gradient estimate for a very weak solution to a quasilinear elliptic equation with a nonstandard growth condition, which is a natural generalization of the $p$-Laplace equation. We investigate the maximum extent for the gradient estimate to hold without imposing any regularity assumption on the nonlinearity other than basic structure assumptions. Our results also include a higher integrability result of the gradient and the existence for the very weak solutions to such nonlinear problems.
We classify positive solutions to a class of quasilinear equations with Neumann or Robin boundary conditions in convex domains. Our main tool is an integral formula involving the trace of some relevant quantities for the problem. Under a suitable condition on the nonlinearity, a relevant consequence of our results is that we can extend to weak solutions a celebrated result obtained for stable solutions by Casten and Holland and by Matano.
In the present paper we study the existence of solutions for some classes of singular systems involving the p(x) and q(x) Laplacian operators. The approach is based on bifurcation theory and subsupersolution method for systems of quasilinear equations involving singular terms.
In this paper we prove the existence of multiple solutions for a quasilinear elliptic boundary value problem, when the p-derivative at zero and the p-derivative at infinity of the nonlinearity are greater than the first eigenvalue of the p-Laplace operator. Our proof uses bifurcation from infinity and bifurcation from zero to prove the existence of unbounded branches of positive solutions (resp. of negative solutions). We show the existence of multiple solutions and we provide qualitative properties of these solutions.
In this paper we study entire radial solutions for the quasilinear $p$-Laplace equation $Δ_p u + k(x) f(u) = 0$ where $k$ is a radial positive weight and the nonlinearity behaves e.g. as $f(u)=u|u|^{q-2}-u|u|^{Q-2}$ with $q<Q$. In particular we focus our attention on solutions (positive and sign changing) which are infinitesimal at infinity, thus providing an extension of a previous result by Tang (2001).
This paper deals with the analysis of the internal control with constraint of positive kind of a parabolic PDE with nonlinear diffusion when the time horizon is large enough. The minimal controllability time will be strictly positive. We prove a global steady state constrained controllability result for a quasilinear parabolic with nonlinearity in the diffusion term. Then, under suitable dissipative assumption in the system and local controllability results, we conclude the result to any initial datum and any target trajectory.
We are concerned with nonexistence results for a class of quasilinear parabolic differential problems with a potential in $Ω\times(0,+\infty)$, where $Ω$ is a bounded domain. In particular, we investigate how the behavior of the potential near the boundary of the domain and the power nonlinearity affect the nonexistence of solutions. Particular attention is devoted to the special case of the semilinear parabolic problem, for which we show that the critical rate of growth of the potential near the boundary ensuring nonexistence is sharp.
In the sub-Riemannian setting of Carnot groups, this work investigates a-priori estimates and Liouville type theorems for solutions of coercive, quasilinear differential inequalities of the type $$ Δ_{\mathbb{G}}^φu \ge b(x) f(u) l(|\nabla u|). $$ Prototype examples of $Δ_{\mathbb{G}}^φ$ are the (subelliptic) $p$-Laplacian and the mean curvature operator. The main novelty of the present paper is that we allow a dependence on the gradient $l(t)$ that can vanish both as $t \rightarrow 0^+$ and as $t \rightarrow +\infty$. Our results improve on the recent literature and, by means of suitable coun…
We establish multiplicity results for the following class of quasilinear problems $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{l} -Δ_Φu=f(x,u) \quad \mbox{in} \quad Ω, \\ u=0 \quad \mbox{on} \quad \partial Ω, \end{array} \right. \leqno{(P)} $$ where $Δ_Φu=\text{div}(φ(x,|\nabla u|)\nabla u)$ for a generalized N-function $Φ(x,t)=\int_{0}^{|t|}φ(x,s)s\,ds$. We consider $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ to be a smooth bounded domain that contains two disjoint open regions $Ω_N$ and $Ω_p$ such that $\overline{Ω_N}\cap\overline{Ω_p}=\emptyset$. The main feature of the problem $(P)$ is that the operator $-Δ_Φ$ behaves like $-Δ_N$…
We establish the existence of multi-bump solutions for the following class of quasilinear problems $$ - Δ_{ p(x) } u + \big( λV(x) + Z(x) \big) u ^{ p(x)-1 } = f(x,u) \text{ in } \mathbb R^N, \, u \ge 0 \text{ in } \mathbb R^N, $$ where the nonlinearity $ f \colon \mathbb R^N \times \mathbb R \to \mathbb R $ is a continuous function having a subcritical growth and potentials $ V, Z \colon \mathbb R^N \to \mathbb R $ are continuous functions verifying some hypotheses. The main tool used is the variational method.
This paper concerns the existence of a solution for the following class of semipositone quasilinear problems \begin{equation*} \left \{ \begin{array}{rclcl} -Δ_p u = h(x)(f(u)-a),\ & u > 0 & \mbox{in} & \mathbb{R}^N, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $1<p<N$, $a>0$, $ f:[0,+\infty) \to [0,+\infty)$ is a function with subcritical growth and $f(0)=0$, while $h:\mathbb{R}^N \to (0,+\infty)$ is a continuous function that satisfies some technical conditions. We prove via nonsmooth critical points theory and comparison principle, that a solution exists for $a$ small enough. We also provide a…
Using Harnack's inequality and a scaling argument we study Liouville-type theorems and the asymptotic behaviour of positive solutions near an isolated singular point $ζ\in \partialΩ\cup\{\infty\}$ for the quasilinear elliptic equation $$-\text{div}(|\nabla u|_A^{p-2}A\nabla u)+V|u|^{p-2}u =0\quad\text{ in } Ω,$$ where $Ω$ is a domain in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 2$, $1<p<d$, and $A=(a_{ij})\in L_{\rm loc}^{\infty}(Ω; \mathbb{R}^{d\times d})$ is a symmetric and locally uniformly positive definite matrix. It is assumed that the potential $V$ belongs to a certain Wolff class and has a generalized Fu…
We prove the existence of solutions for an evolution quasi-variational inequality with a first order quasilinear operator and a variable convex set, which is characterized by a constraint on the absolute value of the gradient that depends on the solution itself. The only required assumption on the nonlinearity of this constraint is its continuity and positivity. The method relies on an appropriate parabolic regularization and suitable {\em a priori} estimates. We obtain also the existence of stationary solutions, by studying the asymptotic behaviour in time. In the variational case, correspond…
We study the existence of positive solutions to the quasilinear elliptic problem -εΔu+V(x)u-εk(\Del(|u|^{2}))u=g(u), \quad u>0, x \in R^N, where g has superlinear growth at infinity without any restriction from above on its growth. Mountain pass in a suitable Orlicz space is employed to establish this result. These equations contain strongly singular nonlinearities which include derivatives of the second order which make the situation more complicated. Such equations arise when one seeks for standing wave solutions for the corresponding quasilinear Schrödinger equations. Schrödinger equations …
