We consider a quasilinear elliptic equation involving a first order term, under zero Dirichlet boundary condition in half spaces. We prove that any positive solution is monotone increasing w.r.t. the direction orthogonal to the boundary. The main ingredient in the proof is a new comparison principle in unbounded domains. As a consequence of our analysis, we also obtain some new Liouville type theorems.
We consider singular solutions to quasilinear elliptic equations under zero Dirichlet boundary condition. Under suitable assumptions on the nonlinearity we deduce symmetry and monotonicity properties of positive solutions via an improved moving plane procedure.
We prove a weak comparison principle in narrow unbounded domains for solutions to $-Δ_p u=f(u)$ in the case $2<p< 3$ and $f(\cdot)$ is a power-type nonlinearity, or in the case $p>2$ and $f(\cdot)$ is super-linear. We exploit it to prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to $-Δ_p u=f(u)$ in half spaces (with zero Dirichlet assumption) and therefore to prove some Liouville-type theorems.
In this paper we prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to $ -Δ_p u = f(u) $ in half-spaces under zero Dirichlet boundary conditions, for $(2N+2)/(N+2) < p < 2$ and for a general class of regular changing-sign nonlinearities $f$. The techniques used in the proof of the main result are based on a fine use of comparison and maximum principles and on an adaptation of the celebrated moving plane method to quasilinear elliptic equations in unbounded domains.
In this paper, we investigate a general quasilinear elliptic and singular system. By monotonicity methods, we give some existence and uniqueness results. Next, we give some applications to biological models.
In this paper we present some very recent results regarding existence, uniqueness, and multiplicity of solutions for quasilinear elliptic equations and systems, exhibiting both singular and convective reaction terms. The importance of boundary conditions (Dirichlet, Neumann, or Robin) is also discussed. Existence is achieved via sub-supersolution and truncation techniques, fixed point theory, nonlinear regularity, and set-valued analysis, while uniqueness and multiplicity are obtained by monotonicity arguments.
By means of a penalization scheme due to del Pino and Felmer, we prove the existence of single-peaked solutions for a class of singularly perturbed quasilinear elliptic equations associated with functionals which lack of smoothness. We don't require neither uniqueness assumptions on the limiting autonomous equation nor monotonicity conditions on the nonlinearity. Compared with the semilinear case some difficulties arise and the study of concentration of the solutions needs a somewhat involved analysis in which the Pucci-Serrin variational identity plays an important role.
The main goal of this paper is to show how some monotonicity methods related with the subdifferential of suitable convex functions and its extensions as m-accretive operators in Banach spaces lead to new and unexpected results showing, for instance, the continuous and monotone dependence of solutions with the respect to the data (and coefficients) of the problem. In this way, this paper offers `a common roof' to several methods and results concerning monotone and non-monotone frameworks. Besides to present here some new results, this paper offers also a peculiar survey to some topics which att…
We are concerned with a class of second order quasilinear elliptic equations driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator introduced by C.A. Stuart and whose study is motivated by models in Nonlinear Optics. We establish sufficient conditions for the existence of at least one or two non-negative solutions. Our analysis considers the cases when the reaction has either a sublinear or a linear growth. In the sublinear case, we also prove a nonexistence property. The proofs combine energy estimates and variational methods. In particular, the monotonicity trick is applied in order to overcome t…
We prove Hölder continuity up to the boundary for solutions of quasi-linear degenerate elliptic problems in divergence form, not necessarily of variational type, on Lipschitz domains with Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. This includes the $p$-Laplace operator for all $p \in (1,\infty)$, but also operators with unbounded coefficients. Based on the elliptic result we show that the corresponding parabolic problem is well-posed in the space $C(\barΩ)$ provided that the coefficients satisfy a mild monotonicity condition. More precisely, we show that the realization of the elliptic operator in…
We consider the nonlinear half laplacian heat equation $$ u_t+(-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}} u-|u|^{p-1}u=0,\quad \mathbb{R}^n\times (0, T). $$ We prove that all blows-up are type I, provided that $n \leq 4$ and $ 1<p<p_{*} (n)$ where $ p_{*} (n)$ is an explicit exponent which is below $\frac{n+1}{n-1}$, the critical Sobolev exponent. Central to our proof is a Giga-Kohn type monotonicity formula for half laplacian and a Liouville type theorem for self-similar nonlinear heat equation. This is the first instance of a monotonicity formula at the level of the nonlocal equation, without invoking the extension …
We consider nonnegative solutions to $-Δu=f(u)$ in half-planes and strips, under zero Dirichlet boundary condition. Exploiting a rotating$\&$sliding line technique, we prove symmetry and monotonicity properties of the solutions, under very general assumptions on the nonlinearity $f$. In fact we provide a unified approach that works in all the cases $f(0)<0$, $f(0)= 0$ or $f(0)> 0$. Furthermore we make the effort to deal with nonlinearities $f$ that may be not locally-Lipschitz continuous. We also provide explicite examples showing the sharpness of our assumptions on the nonlinear function $f$.
We consider weak distributional solutions to the equation $-Δ_pu=f(u)$ in half-spaces under zero Dirichlet boundary condition. We assume that the nonlinearity is positive and superlinear at zero. For $p>2$ (the case $1<p\leq2$ is already known) we prove that any positive solution is strictly monotone increasing in the direction orthogonal to the boundary of the half-space. As a consequence we deduce some Liouville type theorems for the Lane-Emden type equation. Furthermore any nonnegative solution turns out to be $C^{2,α}$ smooth.
In this paper, we consider the quasilinear Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} -Δu+V(x)u-uΔ(u^2)=g(u),\ \ x\in \mathbb{R}^{3}, \end{equation*} where $V$ and $g$ are continuous functions. Without the coercive condition on $V$ or the monotonicity condition on $g$, we show that the problem above has a least energy sign-changing solution and infinitely many sign-changing solutions. Our results especially solve the problem above in the case where $g(u)=|u|^{p-2}u$ ($2<p<4$) and complete some recent related works on sign-changing solutions, in the sense that, in the literature only the case $g(u)…
In this paper, we study the global regularity estimates in Lorentz spaces for gradients of solutions to quasilinear elliptic equations with measure data of the form \begin{eqnarray*} \left\{ \begin{array}{rcl} -{\rm div}(\mathcal{A}(x, \nabla u))&=& μ\quad \text{in} ~Ω, u&=&0 \quad \text{on}~ \partial Ω, \end{array}\right. \end{eqnarray*} where $μ$ is a finite signed Radon measure in $Ω$, $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is a bounded domain such that its complement $\mathbb{R}^n\backslashΩ$ is uniformly $p$-thick and $\mathcal{A}$ is a Carathéodory vector valued function satisfying growth and monotonic…
We study a class of fractional elliptic problems of the form $\Ds u= f(u)$ in the half space $\R^N_+:=\{x \in \R^N\::\: x_1>0\}$ with the complementary Dirichlet condition $u \equiv 0$ in $\R^N \setminus \R^N_+$. Under mild assumptions on the nonlinearity $f$, we show that bounded positive solutions are increasing in $x_1$. For the special case $f(u)=u^q$, we deduce nonexistence of positive bounded solutions in the case where $q \ge 1$ and $q<\frac{N-1+2s}{N-1-2s}$ if $N \ge 1+2s$. We do not require integrability assumptions on the solutions we study.
In this paper we consider classical solutions $u$ of the semilinear fractional problem $(-Δ)^s u = f(u)$ in $\mathbb{R}^N_+$ with $u=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N \setminus \mathbb{R}^N_+$, where $(-Δ)^s$, $0<s<1$, stands for the fractional laplacian, $N\ge 2$, $\mathbb{R}^N_+=\{x=(x',x_N)\in \mathbb{R}^N:\ x_N>0\}$ is the half-space and $f\in C^1$ is a given function. With no additional restriction on the function $f$, we show that bounded, nonnegative, nontrivial classical solutions are indeed positive in $\mathbb{R}^N_+$ and verify $$ \frac{\partial u}{\partial x_N}>0 \quad \hbox{in } \mathbb{R}^N_+.…
New sharp Strichartz estimates for the Maxwell system in two dimensions with rough permittivity and non-trivial charges are proved. We use the FBI transform to carry out the analysis in phase space. For this purpose, the Maxwell equations are conjugated to a system of half-wave equations with rough coefficients. For this system, Strichartz estimates are similarly derived as in previous work by Tataru on scalar wave equations with rough coefficients. We use the estimates to improve the local well-posedness theory for quasilinear Maxwell equations in two dimensions.
We prove a constructive stable ODE-type blowup result for open sets of solutions to a family of quasilinear wave equations in three spatial dimensions featuring a Riccati-type derivative-quadratic semilinear term. The singularity is more severe than a shock in that the solution itself blows up like the log of the distance to the blowup-time. We assume that the quasilinear terms satisfy certain structural assumptions, which in particular ensure that the "elliptic part" of the wave operator vanishes precisely at the singular points. The initial data are compactly supported and can be small or la…
We give a simple proof of the fact that for a large class of quasilinear elliptic equations and systems the solutions that minimize the corresponding energy in the set of all solutions are radially symmetric. We require just continuous nonlinearities and no cooperative conditions for systems. Thus, in particular, our results cannot be obtained by using the moving planes method. In the case of scalar equations, we also prove that any least energy solution has a constant sign and is monotone with respect to the radial variable.
We consider a nonlocal equation set in an unbounded domain with the epigraph property. We prove symmetry, monotonicity and rigidity results. In particular, we deal with halfspaces, coercive epigraphs and epigraphs that are flat at infinity.
In this paper we show the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for a large class of backward SPDE where the coefficients satisfy a specific type Lyapunov condition instead of the classical coercivity condition. Moreover, based on the generalized variational framework, we also use the local monotonicity condition to replace the standard monotonicity condition, which is applicable to various quasilinear and semilinear BSPDE models.

We prove the uniqueness property for a class of entire solutions to the equation \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} -{\rm div}\, \mathcal{A}(x,\nabla u) = σ, \quad u\geq 0 \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^n, \\ \displaystyle{\liminf_{|x|\rightarrow \infty}}\, u = 0, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $σ$ is a nonnegative locally finite measure in $\mathbb{R}^n$, absolutely continuous with respect to the $p$-capacity, and ${\rm div}\, \mathcal{A}(x,\nabla u)$ is the $\mathcal{A}$-Laplace operator, under standard growth and monotonicity assumptions of order $p$ ($1<p<\infty$) on $\mat…
We consider a quasilinear equation given in the half-space, i.e. a so called boundary reaction problem. Our concerns are a geometric Poincaré inequality and, as a byproduct of this inequality, a result on the symmetry of low-dimensional bounded stable solutions, under some suitable assumptions on the nonlinearities. More precisely, we analyze the following boundary problem $$ \left\{\begin{matrix} -{\rm div} (a(x,|\nabla u|)\nabla u)+g(x,u)=0 \qquad {on $\R^n\times(0,+\infty)$} -a(x,|\nabla u|)u_x = f(u) \qquad{\mbox{on $\R^n\times\{0\}$}}\end{matrix} \right.$$ under some natural assumptions o…
We obtain probabilistic local well-posedness in quasilinear regimes for the Schrödinger half-wave equation with a cubic nonlinearity. We need to use a refined ansatz because of the lack of probabilistic smoothing in the Picard's iterations, which is due to the high-low-low frequency interactions. The proof is an adaptation of the method of Bringmann on the derivative nonlinear wave equation to Schrödinger-type equations. In addition, we discuss ill-posedness results for this equation.
In this paper we consider a quasilinear elliptic PDE, $\text{div} (A(x,u) \nabla u) =0$, where the underlying physical problem gives rise to a jump for the conductivity $A(x,u)$, across a level surface for $u$. Our analysis concerns Lipschitz regularity for the solution $u$, and the regularity of the level surfaces, where $A(x,u)$ has a jump and the solution $u$ does not degenerate. In proving Lipschitz regularity of solutions, we introduce a new and unexpected type of ACF-monotonicity formula with two different operators, that might be of independent interest, and surely can be applied in oth…
This paper is concerned with two properties of positive weak solutions of quasilinear elliptic equations with nonlinear gradient terms. First, we show a Liouville-type theorem for positive weak solutions of the equation involving the $m$-Laplacian operator \begin{equation*} -Δ_{m}u=u^q|\nabla u|^p\ \ \ \mathrm{in}\ \mathbb{R}^N, \end{equation*} where $N\geq1$, $m>1$ and $p,q\geq0$. The technique of Bernstein gradient estimates is ultilized to study the case $p<m$. Moreover, a Liouville-type theorem for supersolutions under subcritial range of exponents \begin{equation*} q(N-m)+p(N-1)<N(m-1) \e…
In this paper, we study the good-$λ$ type bounds for renormalized solutions to nonlinear elliptic problem: \begin{align*} \begin{cases} -÷(A(x,\nabla u)) &= μ\quad \text{in} \ \ Ω, \\ u &=0 \quad \text{on} \ \ \partial Ω. \end{cases} \end{align*} where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $μ$ is a finite Radon measure and $A$ is a monotone Carathédory vector valued function defined on $W^{1,p}_0(Ω)$. The operator $A$ satisfies growth and monotonicity conditions, and the $p$-capacity uniform thickness condition is imposed on $\mathbb{R}^n \setminus Ω$, for the singular case $\frac{3n-2}{2n-1} < p \le 2- \f…
The paper deals with the study of a Lane-Emden-Fowler equation with Dirichlet boundary condition and variable potential functions. The analysis developed in this paper combines monotonicity methods with variational arguments. Remark (April 21, 2020): Our results were later studied also by D.-P. Covei, Quasilinear problems with the competition between convex and concave nonlinearities and variable potentials, Internat. J. Math. 24:1 (2013), art. 1350005), arXiv:1104.4626v1.
We study the behaviour of the solutions to the quasilinear heat equation with a reaction restricted to a half-line $$ u_t=(u^m)_{xx}+a(x) u^p, $$ $m, p>0$ and $a(x)=1$ for $x>0$, $a(x)=0$ for $x<0$. We first characterize the global existence exponent $p_0=1$ and the Fujita exponent $p_c=m+2$. Then we pass to study the grow-up rate in the case $p\le1$ and the blow-up rate for $p>1$. In particular we show that the grow-up rate is different as for global reaction if $p>m$ or $p=1\neq m$.
In this paper, we first establish a narrow region principle and a decay at infinity theorem to extend the direct method of moving planes for general fractional $p$-Laplacian systems. By virtue of this method, we can investigate the qualitative properties of the following Schrödinger system with fractional $p$-Laplacian \begin{equation*} \left\{\begin{array}{r@{\ \ }c@{\ \ }ll} \left(-Δ\right)_{p}^{s}u+au^{p-1}& =&f(u,v), \\[0.05cm] \left(-Δ\right)_{p}^{t}v+bv^{p-1}& =&g(u,v), \end{array}\right. \end{equation*} where $0<s,\,t<1$ and $2<p<\infty$. We obtain the radial symmetry in the unit ball o…
We give a survey of nonlinear potential estimates and their applications obtained recently for positive solutions to sublinear problems of the type \[ u = \mathbf{G}(σu^q) + f \quad \textrm{in} \,\, Ω, \] where $0 < q < 1$, $σ\ge 0$ is a Radon measure in $Ω$, $ f \ge 0$ is a measurable function, and $\mathbf{G}$ is a linear integral operator with positive kernel $G$ on $Ω\timesΩ$. For quasi-metric (or quasi-metrically modifiable) kernels $G$, these bilateral pointwise estimates yield existence criteria and uniqueness of solutions $u \in L^q_{\rm loc} (Ω, σ)$. Applications are considered to sem…
This paper studies the asymptotic stability of solution to an initial-boundary value problem for a hyperbolic-elliptic coupled system on two-dimensional half space, where the data on the boundary and at the far field are prescribed as $u_-$ and $u_+$. We show that the solution to the problem converges to the corresponding planar rarefaction wave for $0\le u_-<u_+$ as time tends to infinity under smallness assumptions on the initial perturbation and wave strength. These results are based on the analysis of div-curl decomposition, the standard $L^2$-energy method, $L^1$-estimate, and the monoton…
We study global Mumford-Shah minimizers in $\R^N$, introduced by Bonnet as blow-up limits of Mumford-Shah minimizers. We prove a new monotonicity formula for the energy of $u$ when the singular set $K$ is contained in a smooth enough cone. We then use this monotonicity to prove that for any reduced global minimizer $(u,K)$ in $\R^3$, if $K$ is contained in a half-plane and touching its edge, then it is the half-plane itself. This partially answers to a question of Guy David.
