The main goal of this paper is to show how some monotonicity methods related with the subdifferential of suitable convex functions and its extensions as m-accretive operators in Banach spaces lead to new and unexpected results showing, for instance, the continuous and monotone dependence of solutions with the respect to the data (and coefficients) of the problem. In this way, this paper offers `a common roof' to several methods and results concerning monotone and non-monotone frameworks. Besides to present here some new results, this paper offers also a peculiar survey to some topics which attracted the attention of many specialists in elliptic and parabolic nonlinear partial differential equations in the last years under the important influence of Haim Brezis. To be more precise, the model problem under consideration concerns to positive solutions of a general class of doubly nonlinear diffusion parabolic equations with some sub-homogeneous forcing terms.
We consider singular solutions to quasilinear elliptic equations under zero Dirichlet boundary condition. Under suitable assumptions on the nonlinearity we deduce symmetry and monotonicity properties of positive solutions via an improved moving plane procedure.
We consider a quasilinear elliptic equation involving a first order term, under zero Dirichlet boundary condition in half spaces. We prove that any positive solution is monotone increasing w.r.t. the direction orthogonal to the boundary. The main ingredient in the proof is a new comparison principle in unbounded domains. As a consequence of our analysis, we also obtain some new Liouville type theorems.
We prove a weak comparison principle in narrow unbounded domains for solutions to $-Δ_p u=f(u)$ in the case $2<p< 3$ and $f(\cdot)$ is a power-type nonlinearity, or in the case $p>2$ and $f(\cdot)$ is super-linear. We exploit it to prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to $-Δ_p u=f(u)$ in half spaces (with zero Dirichlet assumption) and therefore to prove some Liouville-type theorems.
In this paper we prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to $ -Δ_p u = f(u) $ in half-spaces under zero Dirichlet boundary conditions, for $(2N+2)/(N+2) < p < 2$ and for a general class of regular changing-sign nonlinearities $f$. The techniques used in the proof of the main result are based on a fine use of comparison and maximum principles and on an adaptation of the celebrated moving plane method to quasilinear elliptic equations in unbounded domains.
In this paper, we provide a direct approach to the existence and uniqueness of strong (in the probabilistic sense) and weak (in the PDE sense) solutions to quasilinear stochastic partial differential equations, which are neither monotone nor locally monotone.
In this paper, we investigate a general quasilinear elliptic and singular system. By monotonicity methods, we give some existence and uniqueness results. Next, we give some applications to biological models.
In this work, we review and extend some well known results for the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet $p-$Laplace operator to a more general class of monotone quasilinear elliptic operators. As an application we obtain some homogenization results for nonlinear eigenvalues.
In this paper we present some very recent results regarding existence, uniqueness, and multiplicity of solutions for quasilinear elliptic equations and systems, exhibiting both singular and convective reaction terms. The importance of boundary conditions (Dirichlet, Neumann, or Robin) is also discussed. Existence is achieved via sub-supersolution and truncation techniques, fixed point theory, nonlinear regularity, and set-valued analysis, while uniqueness and multiplicity are obtained by monotonicity arguments.
We revisit Wu and Zou non-standard quasi-monotonicity approach for proving existence of monotone wavefronts in monostable reaction-diffusion equations with delays. This allows to solve the problem of existence of monotone wavefronts in a neutral KPP-Fisher equation. In addition, using some new ideas proposed recently by Solar et al., we establish the uniqueness (up to a translation) of these monotone wavefronts.
This work aims to prove the small time large deviation principle (LDP) for a class of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with locally monotone coefficients in generalized variational framework. The main result could be applied to demonstrate the small time LDP for various quasilinear and semilinear SPDEs such as stochastic porous media equations, stochastic $p$-Laplace equations, stochastic Burgers type equation, stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equation, stochastic power law fluid equation and stochastic Ladyzhenskaya model. In particular, our small time LDP result seems to be new i…
By means of a penalization scheme due to del Pino and Felmer, we prove the existence of single-peaked solutions for a class of singularly perturbed quasilinear elliptic equations associated with functionals which lack of smoothness. We don't require neither uniqueness assumptions on the limiting autonomous equation nor monotonicity conditions on the nonlinearity. Compared with the semilinear case some difficulties arise and the study of concentration of the solutions needs a somewhat involved analysis in which the Pucci-Serrin variational identity plays an important role.
We discuss a general framework of monotone skew-product semiflows under a connected group action. In a prior work, a compact connected group $G$-action has been considered on a strongly monotone skew-product semiflow. Here we relax the requirement of strong monotonicity of the skew-product semiflows and the compactness of $G$, and establish a theory concerning symmetry or monotonicity properties of uniformly stable 1-cover minimal sets. We then apply this theory to show rotational symmetry of certain stable entire solutions for a class of non-autonomous reaction-diffusion equations on $\RR^n$,…
In this note we develop a framework which allows to prove an existence result for non-linear evolution problems involving time-dependent, pseudo-monotone operators. This abstract existence result is applicable to a large class of concrete problems where the standard theorem on evolutionary pseudo-monotone operators is not applicable. To this end we introduce the notion of Bochner pseudo-monotonicity, and Bochner coercivity, which are appropriate extensions of the concepts of pseudo-monotonicity and coercivity to the evolutionary setting. Moreover, we give sufficient conditions for these new no…
In this paper we establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions for nonlinear evolution equations on Banach space with locally monotone operators, which is a generalization of the classical result by J.L. Lions for monotone operators. In particular, we show that local monotonicity implies the pseudo-monotonicity. The main result is applied to various types of PDE such as reaction-diffusion equations, generalized Burgers equation, Navier-Stokes equation, 3D Leray-$α$ model and $p$-Laplace equation with non-monotone perturbations.
This paper deals with an existence and uniqueness result of the weak solution for a quasilinear elliptic PDE with nonlinear Robin boundary conditions. This problem is defined on a domain whose boundary is the union of two disjoint surfaces.where a Dirichelet condition is prescribed on the exterior boundary and a nonlinear Robin condition on the interior one.To achieve that, we use the theory of monotone operators
Generalized Standard Materials are governed by maximal cyclically monotone operators and modeled by convex potentials. Géry de Saxcé's Implicit Standard Materials are modeled by biconvex bipotentials. We analyze the intermediate class of n-monotone materials governed by maximal n-monotone operators and modeled by Fitzpatrick's functions. Revisiting the model of elastic materials initiated by Robert Hooke, and insisting on the linearity, coaxiality and monotonicity properties of the constitutive law, we illustrate that Fitzpatrick's representation of n-monotone operators coming from convex anal…
We prove by means of advanced pseudo-monotonicity methods an abstract existence result for parabolic partial differential equations with $\log$-Hölder continuous variable exponent nonlinearity governed by the symmetric part of a gradient only. To this end, we introduce the notions Bochner pseudo-monotonicity and Bochner coercivity, which are appropriate extensions of the concepts of pseudo-monotonicity and coercivity to unsteady problems in variable exponent spaces. In this context, we apply the so-called Hirano-Landes approach, which enables us to give general and easily verifiable conditions…
Recently, the authors studied the connection between each maximal monotone operator T and a family H(T) of convex functions. Each member of this family characterizes the operator and satisfies two particular inequalities. The aim of this paper is to establish the converse of the latter fact. Namely, that every convex function satisfying those two particular inequalities is associated to a unique maximal monotone operator.
We study a nonlocal 4th order degenerate equation deriving from the epitaxial growth on crystalline materials. We first prove the global existence of evolution variational inequality solution with a general initial data using the gradient flow structure. Then with a monotone initial data, we prove the subdifferential of the associated convex functional is indeed single-valued, which gives higher regularities of the global solution. Particularly, higher regularites imply that the strict monotonicity maintains for all time, which provides rigorous justification for global-in time monotone soluti…
We are concerned with a class of second order quasilinear elliptic equations driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator introduced by C.A. Stuart and whose study is motivated by models in Nonlinear Optics. We establish sufficient conditions for the existence of at least one or two non-negative solutions. Our analysis considers the cases when the reaction has either a sublinear or a linear growth. In the sublinear case, we also prove a nonexistence property. The proofs combine energy estimates and variational methods. In particular, the monotonicity trick is applied in order to overcome t…
We prove Hölder continuity up to the boundary for solutions of quasi-linear degenerate elliptic problems in divergence form, not necessarily of variational type, on Lipschitz domains with Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. This includes the $p$-Laplace operator for all $p \in (1,\infty)$, but also operators with unbounded coefficients. Based on the elliptic result we show that the corresponding parabolic problem is well-posed in the space $C(\barΩ)$ provided that the coefficients satisfy a mild monotonicity condition. More precisely, we show that the realization of the elliptic operator in…
We give a simple proof of the fact that for a large class of quasilinear elliptic equations and systems the solutions that minimize the corresponding energy in the set of all solutions are radially symmetric. We require just continuous nonlinearities and no cooperative conditions for systems. Thus, in particular, our results cannot be obtained by using the moving planes method. In the case of scalar equations, we also prove that any least energy solution has a constant sign and is monotone with respect to the radial variable.
In this paper we generalize the monotonicity formulas of [C] for manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. Monotone quantities play a key role in analysis and geometry; see, e.g., [A], [CM1] and [GL] for applications of monotonicity to uniqueness. Among the applications here is that level sets of Green's function on open manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature are asymptotically umbilic.
In this paper, we study the relation of the monotonicity of Hawking Mass and geometric flow problems. We show that along the Hamilton-DeTurck flow with bounded curvature coupled with the modified mean curvature flow, the Hawking mass of the hypersphere with a sufficiently large radius in Schwarzschild spaces is monotone non-decreasing.
