We study a nonlocal 4th order degenerate equation deriving from the epitaxial growth on crystalline materials. We first prove the global existence of evolution variational inequality solution with a general initial data using the gradient flow structure. Then with a monotone initial data, we prove the subdifferential of the associated convex functional is indeed single-valued, which gives higher regularities of the global solution. Particularly, higher regularites imply that the strict monotonicity maintains for all time, which provides rigorous justification for global-in time monotone solution to epitaxial growth model with nonlocal elastic effects on vicinal surface.
In this paper we consider classical solutions $u$ of the semilinear fractional problem $(-Δ)^s u = f(u)$ in $\mathbb{R}^N_+$ with $u=0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N \setminus \mathbb{R}^N_+$, where $(-Δ)^s$, $0<s<1$, stands for the fractional laplacian, $N\ge 2$, $\mathbb{R}^N_+=\{x=(x',x_N)\in \mathbb{R}^N:\ x_N>0\}$ is the half-space and $f\in C^1$ is a given function. With no additional restriction on the function $f$, we show that bounded, nonnegative, nontrivial classical solutions are indeed positive in $\mathbb{R}^N_+$ and verify $$ \frac{\partial u}{\partial x_N}>0 \quad \hbox{in } \mathbb{R}^N_+.…
We study the strong unique continuation property backwards in time for the nonlocal equation in $\mathbb{R}^{n} \times \mathbb{R}$ \begin{equation}\label{one} (\partial_t - Δ)^{s} u = V(x,t)u \end{equation} for $s \in (0,1)$. Our main result Theorem 1.2 can be thought of as the nonlocal counterpart of the result obtained by Poon for the case when $s=1$. In order to prove Theorem 1.2 we develop the regularity theory of the extension problem for the equation above. With such theory in hands we establish: i) a basic monotonicity result for an adjusted frequency function which plays a central role…
We consider a nonlocal equation set in an unbounded domain with the epigraph property. We prove symmetry, monotonicity and rigidity results. In particular, we deal with halfspaces, coercive epigraphs and epigraphs that are flat at infinity.
We study a nonlinear, nonlocal eigenvalue problem driven by the fractional p-Laplacian with an indefinite, singular weight chosen in an optimal class. We prove the existence of an unbounded sequence of positive variational eigenvalues and alternative characterizations of the first and second eigenvalues. Then, by means of such characterizations, we prove strict decreasing monotonicity of such eigenvalues with respect to the weight function.
We consider the following elliptic system with fractional laplacian $$ -(-Δ)^su=uv^2,\ \ -(-Δ)^sv=vu^2,\ \ u,v>0 \ \mbox{on}\ \R^n,$$ where $s\in(0,1)$ and $(-Δ)^s$ is the $s$-Lapalcian. We first prove that all positive solutions must have polynomial bound. Then we use the Almgren monotonicity formula to perform a blown-down analysis to $s$-harmonic functions. Finally we use the method of moving planes to prove the uniqueness of the one dimensional profile, up to translation and scaling.
This article considers nonlocal heat flows into a singular target space. The problem is the parabolic analogue of a stationary problem that arises as the limit of a singularly perturbed elliptic system. It also provides a gradient flow approach to an optimal eigenvalue partition problem that, in light of the work of Caffarelli and Lin, is equivalent to a constrained harmonic mapping problem. In particular, we show that weak solutions of our heat equation converge as time approaches infinity to stationary solutions of this mapping problem. For these weak solutions, we also prove Lipschitz conti…
We prove convergence of positive solutions to \[ u_t = uΔu + u\int_Ω |\nabla u|^2, \qquad u\rvert_{\partialΩ} =0, \qquad u(\cdot,0)=u_0 \] in a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 1$, with smooth boundary in the case of $\int_Ωu_0=1$ and identify the $W_0^{1,2}(Ω)$-limit of $u(t)$ as $t\to \infty$ as the solution of the corresponding stationary problem. This behaviour is different from the cases of $\int_Ωu_0<1$ and $\int_Ωu_0>1$ which are known to result in convergence to zero or blow-up in finite time, respectively. The proof is based on a monotonicity property of $\int_Ω |\nabla u…
We consider a reaction-diffusion equation with nonlocal anisotropic diffusion and a linear combination of local and nonlocal monostable-type reactions in a space of bounded functions on $\mathbb{R}^d$. Using the properties of the corresponding semiflow, we prove the existence of monotone traveling waves along those directions where the diffusion kernel is exponentially integrable. Among other properties, we prove continuity, strict monotonicity and exponential integrability of the traveling wave profiles.
We study the nodal set of solutions to equations of the form $$ (-Δ)^s u = λ_+ (u_+)^{q-1} - λ_- (u_-)^{q-1}\quad\text{in $B_1$}, $$ where $λ_+,λ_->0, q \in [1,2)$, and $u_+$ and $u_-$ are respectively the positive and negative part of $u$. This collection of nonlinearities includes the unstable two-phase membrane problem $q=1$ as well as sublinear equations for $1<q<2$. We initially prove the validity of the strong unique continuation property and the finiteness of the vanishing order, in order to implement a blow-up analysis of the nodal set. As in the local case $s=1$, we prove that the adm…
We develop the regularity theory for solutions to space-time nonlocal equations driven by fractional powers of the heat operator $$(\partial_t-Δ)^su(t,x)=f(t,x),\quad\hbox{for}~0<s<1.$$ This nonlocal equation of order $s$ in time and $2s$ in space arises in Nonlinear Elasticity, Semipermeable Membranes, Continuous Time Random Walks and Mathematical Biology. It plays for space-time nonlocal equations like the generalized master equation the same role as the fractional Laplacian for nonlocal in space equations. We obtain a pointwise integro-differential formula for $(\partial_t-Δ)^su(t,x)$ and p…
