Supersymmetric D-brane bound states on a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ are counted by generalized Donaldsdon-Thomas invariants $Ω_Z(γ)$, depending on a Chern character (or electromagnetic charge) $γ\in H^*(X)$ and a stability condition (or central charge) $Z$. Attractor invariants $Ω_*(γ)$ are special instances of DT invariants, where $Z$ is the attractor stability condition $Z_γ$ (a generic perturbation of self-stability), from which DT invariants for any other stability condition can be deduced. While difficult to compute in general, these invariants become tractable when $X$ is a crepant resolution of a singular toric Calabi-Yau threefold associated to a brane tiling, and hence to a quiver with potential. We survey some known results and conjectures about framed and unframed refined DT invariants in this context, and compute attractor invariants explicitly for a variety of toric Calabi-Yau threefolds, in particular when $X$ is the total space of the canonical bundle of a smooth projective surface, or when $X$ is a crepant resolution of $C^3/G$. We check that in all these cases, $Ω_*(γ)=0$ unless $γ$ is the dimension vector of a simple representation or belongs to the kernel of the skew-symmetrized Euler form. Based on computations in small dimensions, we predict the values of all attractor invariants, thus potentially solving the problem of counting DT invariants of these threefolds in all stability chambers. We also compute the non-commutative refined DT invariants and verify that they agree with the counting of molten crystals in the unrefined limit.
Brane tilings describe Lagrangians (vector multiplets, chiral multiplets, and the superpotential) of four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories. These theories, written in terms of a bipartite graph on a torus, correspond to worldvolume theories on $N$ D$3$-branes probing a toric Calabi-Yau threefold singularity. A pair of permutations compactly encapsulates the data necessary to specify a brane tiling. We show that geometric consistency for brane tilings, which ensures that the corresponding quantum field theories are well behaved, imposes constraints on the pair of permut…
We present a computationally efficient algorithm that can be used to generate all possible brane tilings. Brane tilings represent the largest class of superconformal theories with known AdS duals in 3+1 and also 2+1 dimensions and have proved useful for describing the physics of both D3 branes and also M2 branes probing Calabi-Yau singularities. This algorithm has been implemented and is used to generate all possible brane tilings with at most 6 superpotential terms, including consistent and inconsistent brane tilings. The collection of inconsistent tilings found in this work form the most com…
We classify the first few brane tilings on a genus 2 Riemann surface and identify their toric Calabi-Yau moduli spaces. These brane tilings are extensions of tilings on the 2-torus, which represent one of the largest known classes of 4d N=1 superconformal field theories for D3-branes. The classification consists of 16 distinct genus 2 brane tilings with up to 8 quiver fields and 4 superpotential terms. The Higgs mechanism is used to relate the different theories.
We re-interpret the anomaly cancellation conditions for the gauge symmetries and the baryonic flavor symmetries in quiver gauge theories realized by the brane tilings from the viewpoint of flux conservation on branes.
We investigate orientifold of brane tilings. We clarify how the cancellations of gauge anomaly and Witten's anomaly are guaranteed by the conservation of the D5-brane charge. We also discuss the relation between brane tilings and the dual Calabi-Yau cones realized as the moduli spaces of gauge theories. Two types of flavor D5-branes in brane tilings and corresponding superpotentials of fundamental quark fields are proposed, and it is shown that the massless loci of these quarks in the moduli space correctly reproduce the worldvolume of flavor D7-branes in the Calabi-Yau cone dual to the fivebr…
An infinite class of $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories can be engineered on the worldvolume of D3-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 3-folds. This kind of setup has multiple applications, ranging from the gauge/gravity correspondence to local model building in string phenomenology. Brane tilings fully encode the gauge theories on the D3-branes and have substantially simplified their connection to the probed geometries. The purpose of this paper is to push the boundaries of computation and to produce as comprehensive a database of brane tilings as possible. We develop efficient implementations o…
We investigate the relation between gauge theories and brane configurations described by brane tilings. We identify U(1)_B (baryonic), U(1)_M (mesonic), and U(1)_R global symmetries in gauge theories with gauge symmetries in the brane configurations. We also show that U(1)_MU(1)_B^2 and U(1)_RU(1)_B^2 't Hooft anomalies are reproduced as gauge transformations of the classical brane action.
Brane tilings are efficient mnemonics for Lagrangians of N=2 Chern-Simons-matter theories. Such theories are conjectured to arise on M2-branes probing singular toric Calabi-Yau fourfolds. In this paper, a simple modification of the Kasteleyn technique is described which is conjectured to compute the three dimensional toric diagram of the non-compact moduli space of a single probe. The Hilbert Series is used to compute the spectrum of non-trivial scaling dimensions for a selected set of examples.
We review recent developments in the theory of brane tilings and four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. This review consists of two parts. In part I, we describe foundations of brane tilings, emphasizing the physical interpretation of brane tilings as fivebrane systems. In part II, we discuss application of brane tilings to AdS/CFT correspondence and homological mirror symmetry. More topics, such as orientifold of brane tilings, phenomenological model building, similarities with BPS solitons in supersymmetric gauge theories, are also briefly discussed. This paper is a revis…
We give an elementary introduction to the recent derivation of the effective low-energy gauge theories of D3-branes probing orientifolds of toric Calabi-Yau 3-fold singularities via brane tiling techniques.
Both brane tilings and exceptional collections are useful tools for describing the low energy gauge theory on a stack of D3-branes probing a Calabi-Yau singularity. We provide a dictionary that translates between these two heretofore unconnected languages. Given a brane tiling, we compute an exceptional collection of line bundles associated to the base of the non-compact Calabi-Yau threefold. Given an exceptional collection, we derive the periodic quiver of the gauge theory which is the graph theoretic dual of the brane tiling. Our results give new insight to the construction of quiver theorie…
Brane tilings provide the most general framework in string and M-theory for matching toric Calabi-Yau singularities probed by branes with superconformal fixed points of quiver gauge theories. The brane tiling data consists of a bipartite tiling of the torus which encodes both the classical superpotential and gauge-matter couplings for the quiver gauge theory. We consider the class of tilings which contain only tiles bounded by exactly four edges and present a method for generating any tiling within this class by iterating combinations of certain graph-theoretic moves. In the context of D3-bran…
We study a new duality which pairs 4d N=1 supersymmetric quiver gauge theories. They are represented by brane tilings and are worldvolume theories of D3 branes at Calabi-Yau 3-fold singularities. The new duality identifies theories which have the same combined mesonic and baryonic moduli space, otherwise called the master space. We obtain the associated Hilbert series which encodes both the generators and defining relations of the moduli space. We illustrate our findings with a set of brane tilings that have reflexive toric diagrams.
We investigate (2+1)-dimensional quiver Chern-Simons theories that arise from the study of M2-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. These theories can be elegantly described using brane tilings. We present several theories that admit a tiling description and give details of these theories including the toric data of their mesonic moduli space and the structure of both their Master space and baryonic moduli space. Where different toric phases are known, we exhibit the equivalence between the vacua. We identify some of the mesonic moduli spaces as cones over smooth toric Fano 3-folds.
We describe a simple algorithm that computes the recently discovered brane tilings for a given generic toric singular Calabi-Yau threefold. This therefore gives AdS/CFT dual quiver gauge theories for D3-branes probing the given non-compact manifold. The algorithm solves a longstanding problem by computing superpotentials for these theories directly from the toric diagram of the singularity. We study the parameter space of a-maximization; this study is made possible by identifying the R-charges of bifundamental fields as angles in the brane tiling. We also study Seiberg duality from a new persp…
Brane Tilings represent one of the largest classes of superconformal theories with known gravity duals in 3+1 and also 2+1 dimensions. They provide a useful link between a large class of quiver gauge theories and their moduli spaces, which are the toric Calabi-Yau (CY) singularities. This thesis includes a discussion of an algorithm that can be used to generate all brane tilings with any given number of superpotential terms. All tilings with at most 8 superpotential terms have been generated using an implementation of this method. Orbifolds are a subject of central importance in string theory.…
We derive the quiver gauge theory on the world-volume of D3-branes transverse to an L(a,b,c) singularity by computing the endomorphism algebra of a tilting object first constructed by Van den Bergh. The quiver gauge theory can be concisely specified by an embedding of a graph into a face-centered cubic lattice. In this description, planar Seiberg dualities of the gauge theory act by changing the graph embedding. We use this description of Seiberg duality to show these quiver gauge theories possess periodic Seiberg dualities whose existence was expected from the AdS/CFT correspondence.
In the last few years, brane tilings have proven to be an efficient and convenient way of studying supersymmetric gauge theories living on D3-branes or M2-branes. In these pages we present a quick and simple introduction to the subject, hoping this could tickle the reader's curiosity to learn more on this extremely fascinating subject.
A new infinite class of Chern-Simons theories is presented using brane tilings. The new class reproduces all known cases so far and introduces many new models that are dual to M2 brane theories which probe a toric non-compact CY 4-fold. The master space of the quiver theory is used as a tool to construct the moduli space for this class and the Hilbert Series is computed for a selected set of examples.
I show that the motion of a closed string consisting of $n$ segments in AdS$_3$ can be embedded into the mutation dynamics of the $Y^{n,0}$ brane tiling. The determinant of the Kasteleyn matrix computes the spectral curve. The dynamics is governed by a Y-system with additional constraints ensuring that the string closes in target space. The constraints can be deformed by coupling the worldsheet to a background two-form whose field strength is proportional to the volume form.
We study the relation between exactly marginal deformations in a large class of N=1 superconformal quiver gauge theories described by brane tilings and the degrees of freedom in the corresponding 5-brane systems. We show, with the help of NSVZ exact beta functions, that there are generically d-1 complex exactly marginal deformations of a gauge theory, where d is the perimeter of the corresponding n it, and the other two, the diagonal gauge coupling and a beta-like deformation, as background supergravity fields.toric diagram. We identify d-3 complex marginal deformations as deformations of the …
We review and extend the progress made over the past few years in understanding the structure of toric quiver gauge theories; those which are induced on the world-volume of a stack of D3-branes placed at the tip of a toric Calabi-Yau cone, at an ``orbifold point'' in Kaehler moduli space. These provide an infinite class of four-dimensional N=1 superconformal field theories which may be studied in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. It is now understood that these gauge theories are completely specified by certain two-dimensional torus graphs, called brane tilings, and the combinatorics …
Reflexive polygons have attracted great interest both in mathematics and in physics. This paper discusses a new aspect of the existing study in the context of quiver gauge theories. These theories are 4d supersymmetric worldvolume theories of D3 branes with toric Calabi-Yau moduli spaces that are conveniently described with brane tilings. We find all 30 theories corresponding to the 16 reflexive polygons, some of the theories being toric (Seiberg) dual to each other. The mesonic generators of the moduli spaces are identified through the Hilbert series. It is shown that the lattice of generator…
Here we present a class of solutions of M-theory flux branes, which are non-singular at origin. These class of solutions help us to determine the field strength at origin together with the behavior of it near origin. Further we show a way to find the attractor solutions of such flux branes.
We discuss conjectures following from the attractor mechanism in type II string theory about the possible Chern classes of stable holomorphic vector bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds. In particular, we give sufficient conditions for Chern classes to correspond to stable bundles.
We provide a general set of rules for extracting the data defining a quiver gauge theory from a given toric Calabi-Yau singularity. Our method combines information from the geometry and topology of Sasaki-Einstein manifolds, AdS/CFT, dimers, and brane tilings. We explain how the field content, quantum numbers, and superpotential of a superconformal gauge theory on D3-branes probing a toric Calabi-Yau singularity can be deduced. The infinite family of toric singularities with known horizon Sasaki-Einstein manifolds L^{a,b,c} is used to illustrate these ideas. We construct the corresponding quiv…
Recently Ooguri and Yamazaki proposed a statistical model of melting crystals to count BPS bound states of certain D-brane configurations on toric Calabi--Yau manifolds [arXiv:0811.2801]. This construction relied on a set of consistency conditions on the corresponding brane tiling, and in this note I show that these conditions are satisfied for any physical brane tiling; they follow from the conformality of the low energy field theory on the D-branes. As a byproduct I also provide a simple direct proof that any physical brane tiling has a perfect matching.
A 4D-brane realization of $q$-theory has been proposed a few years ago. The present paper studies the corresponding late-time cosmology and establishes the dynamic cancellation of an initial cosmological constant and an attractor behavior towards Minkowski spacetime.
We study the spectrum of BPS particles on the Coulomb branch of five-dimensional superconformal field theories (5d SCFTs) compactified on a circle. By engineering these theories in M-theory on ${\mathbf X} \times S^1 $, for ${\mathbf X}$ an isolated Calabi-Yau threefold singularity, we naturally identify the BPS category of the 5d theory on a circle with the derived category of coherent sheaves on a resolution of ${\mathbf X}$. It follows that the BPS spectrum can be studied in terms of 5d BPS quivers, which are the fractional-brane quivers for the singularity ${\mathbf X}$. 5d BPS quivers gen…
We study renormalization group flows among N=1 SCFTs realized on the worldvolume of D3-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau singularities, thus admitting a brane tiling description. The flows are triggered by masses for adjoint or vector-like pairs of bifundamentals and are generalizations of the Klebanov-Witten construction of the N=1 theory for the conifold starting from the N=2 theory for the C^2/Z_2 orbifold. In order to preserve the toric condition pairs of masses with opposite signs have to be switched on. We offer a geometric interpretation of the flows as complex deformations of the Calabi-…
Configurations of N probe D0-branes in a Calabi-Yau black hole are studied. A large degeneracy of near-horizon bound states are found which can be described as lowest Landau levels tiling the horizon of the black hole. These states preserve some of the enhanced supersymmetry of the near-horizon AdS_2xS^2xCY attractor geometry, but not of the full asymptotically flat solution. Supersymmetric non-abelian configurations are constructed which, via the Myers effect, develop charges associated with higher-dimensional branes wrapping CY cycles. An SU(1,1|2) superconformal quantum mechanics describing…
For a given attractor black hole with generic D6-D4-D2-D0-charges in four dimensions we identify the set of supersymmetric branes, static or stationary in global coordinates, of the corresponding eleven-dimensional near horizon geometry. The set of these BPS states, which includes branes which partially or fully wrap the horizon, should play a role in understanding the partition function of black holes with D6-charges.
Connections between different M2-brane theories are established via the Higgs mechanism, which can be most efficiently studied on brane tilings. This leads to several M2-brane models, with brane tilings or Chern-Simons levels which have not been considered so far. The moduli spaces of these models are identified and examined in detail. The toric diagrams are constructed using Kasteleyn matrices and the forward algorithm.
We examine in details the entropy function formalism for non-extremal D3, M2, and M5-branes that their throat approximation is given by Schwarzschild black hole in AdS_{p+2} \times S^{D-(p+2)}. We show that even though there is no attractor mechanism in the non-extremal black holes/branes, the entropy function formalism does work and the entropy is given by the entropy function at its saddle point.
A new way of computing scattering amplitudes in a certain very important QFT (N=4 SYM) has recently been developed, in which an algebraic structure called the positive Grassmannian plays a very important role. The mathematics of the positive Grassmannian involve, among other things, bipartite graphs, which also appear in the formulation of a certain class of conformal field theories that are currently being generalized into Bipartite Field Theories (BFT). The fact that the same structures appear in two such different realms of physics suggests a deeper connection between the two that is yet to…
We consider N=2 quiver Chern-Simons theories described by brane tilings, whose moduli spaces are toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. Simple prescriptions to obtain toric data of the moduli space and a corresponding brane crystal from a brane tiling are proposed.
We describe a technique which enables one to quickly compute an infinite number of toric geometries and their dual quiver gauge theories. The central object in this construction is a ``brane tiling,'' which is a collection of D5-branes ending on an NS5-brane wrapping a holomorphic curve that can be represented as a periodic tiling of the plane. This construction solves the longstanding problem of computing superpotentials for D-branes probing a singular non-compact toric Calabi-Yau manifold, and overcomes many difficulties which were encountered in previous work. The brane tilings give the lar…
In [L-Y5] (D(6): arXiv:1003.1178 [math.SG]) we introduced the notion of Azumaya $C^{\infty}$-manifolds with a fundamental module and morphisms therefrom to a complex manifold. In the current sequel, we use this notion to give a prototypical definition of supersymmetric D-branes of A-type (i.e. A-branes) -- in an appropriate region of the Wilson's theory-space of string theory -- as special Lagrangian morphisms from such objects with a unitary, minimally flat connection-with-singularities. This merges Donaldson's picture of special Lagrangian submanifolds and the Polchinski-Grothendieck Ansatz …
Reconsidering the analysis of the moduli space of N=2 eight dimensional supergravity coupled to seven scalars, we propose a new scalar manifold factorization given by \frac{\textsc {SO(2,2)}}{\textsc{SO(2)}\times {\textsc{SO(2)}}}\times \frac{\textsc{SO(2,1)}}{\textsc{SO(2)}}\times \textsc {SO(1,1)}. This factorization is supported by the appearance of three solutions of Type IIA extremal black p-branes (p=0,1,2) with AdS_{p+2}\times S^{6-p} near-horizon geometries in eight dimensions. We analyze the corresponding attractor mechanism. In particular, we give an interplay between the scalar mani…
We propose a new potential in brane inflation theory, which is given by the arctangent of the square of the scalar field. Then we perform an explicit computation for inflationary quantities. This potential has many nice features. In the small field approximation, it reproduces the chaotic and MSSM potentials. It allows one, in the large field approximation, to implement the attractor mechanism for bulk black holes where the geometry on the brane is de Sitter. In particular, we show, up to some assumptions, that the Friedman equation can be reinterpreted as a Schwarzschild black hole attractor …
The inflationary attractor properties of the canonical scalar field and Born-Infeld field are investigated in the Randall-Sundrum II scenario with a Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk action. We find that the inflationary attractor property will always hold for both the canonical and Born-Infeld fields for any allowed non-negative Gauss-Bonnet coupling. We also briefly discuss the possibility of explaining the suppressed lower multiples and running scalar spectral index simultaneously in the scenario of Gauss-Bonnet brane inflation.
Motivated by the new higher D-supergravity solutions on intersecting attractors obtained by Ferrara et al. in [Phys.Rev.D79:065031-2009], we focus in this paper on 8D maximal supergravity with moduli space [SL(3,R)/SO(3)]x[SL(2,R)/SO(2)] and study explicitly the attractor mechanism for various configurations of extremal black p- branes (anti-branes) with the typical near horizon geometries AdS_{p+2}xS^{m}xT^{6-p-m} and p=0,1,2,3,4; 2<=m<=6. Interpretations in terms of wrapped M2 and M5 branes of the 11D M-theory on 3-torus are also given. Keywords: 8D supergravity, black p-branes, attractor me…
Supersymmetric zero-brane and one-brane probes in the squashed $AdS_2\times S^3$ near-horizon geometry of the BMPV black hole are studied. Supersymmetric zero-brane probes stabilized by orbital angular momentum on the $S^3$ are found and shown to saturate a BPS bound. We also find supersymmetric one-brane probes which have momentum and winding around a $U(1)_L\times U(1)_R$ torus in the $S^3$ and in some cases are static.
We study the attractor mechanism of dual pairs of black brane bounds in N=2 supergravity in six and seven dimensions. First, we consider the effective potentials of the 6D and 7D black branes as well as their entropies. The contribution coming from the SO(1,1) factor of the moduli spaces M_{6D} and M_{7D} of these theories is carefully analyzed and it is used to motivate the study of the dual black branes bounds; which in turn allow to fix the critical value of the dilaton at horizon. The attractor eqs of the black branes and the bound pairs are derived by combining the criticality conditions …
We present a simple example of a supersymmetric attractor mechanism in the purely open string context of D-branes embedded in curved space-time. Our example involves a class of D3-branes embedded in the 2-charge D1-D5 background of type IIB whose worldvolume contains a 2-sphere. Turning on worldvolume fluxes, these branes carry induced (p,q) string charges. Supersymmetric configurations display a flow of the open string moduli towards an attractor solution independent of their asymptotics. The equations governing this mechanism closely resemble the attractor flow equations for supersymmetric b…
The role of brane-bulk energy exchange and of an induced gravity term on a single braneworld of negative tension and vanishing effective cosmological constant is studied. It is shown that for the physically interesting cases of dust and radiation a unique global attractor which can realize our present universe (accelerating and 0<Omega_{m0}<1) exists for a wide range of the parameters of the model. For Omega_{m0}=0.3, independently of the other parameters, the model predicts that the equation of state for the dark energy today is w_{DE,0}=-1.4, while Omega_{m0}=0.03 leads to w_{DE,0}=-1.03. In…
We find examples of non-supersymmetric attractors in Type II string theory compactified on a Calabi Yau three-fold. For a non-supersymmetric attractor the fixed values to which the moduli are drawn at the horizon must minimise an effective potential. For Type IIA at large volume, we consider a configuration carrying D0, D2, D4 and D6 brane charge. When the D6 brane charge is zero, we find for some range of the other charges, that a non-supersymmetric attractor solution exists. When the D6 brane charge is non-zero, we find for some range of charges, a supersymmetry breaking extremum of the effe…
We investigate the spectrum of type IIA BPS D-branes on the quintic from a four dimensional supergravity perspective and the associated split attractor flow picture. We obtain some very concrete properties of the (quantum corrected) spectrum, mainly based on an extensive numerical analysis, and to a lesser extent on exact results in the large radius approximation. We predict the presence and absence of some charges in the BPS spectrum in various regions of moduli space, including the precise location of the lines of marginal stability and the corresponding decay products. We explain how the ge…
We revisit the 4D generalized black hole geometries, obtained by us [1], with a renewed interest, to unfold some aspects of effective gravity in a noncommutative D3-brane formalism. In particular, we argue for the existence of extra dimensions in the gravity decoupling limit in the theory. We show that the theory is rather described by an ordinary geometry and is governed by an effective string theory in 5D. The extremal black hole geometry $AdS_5$ obtained in effective string theory is shown to be in precise agreement with the gravity dual proposed for D3-brane in a constant magnetic field. K…
We study non-supersymmetric attractors obtained in Type IIA compactifications on Calabi Yau manifolds. Determining if an attractor is stable or unstable requires an algebraically complicated analysis in general. We show using group theoretic techniques that this analysis can be considerably simplified and can be reduced to solving a simple example like the STU model. For attractors with D0-D4 brane charges, determining stability requires expanding the effective potential to quartic order in the massless fields. We obtain the full set of these terms. For attractors with D0-D6 brane charges, we …
Extremal black branes are of interest because they correspond to the ground states of field theories at finite charge density in gauge/gravity duality. The geometry of such a brane need not be translationally invariant in the spatial directions along which it extends. A less restrictive requirement is that of homogeneity, which still allows points along the spatial directions to be related to each other by symmetries. In this paper, we find large new classes of homogeneous but anisotropic extremal black brane horizons, which could naturally arise in gauge/gravity dual pairs. In 4+1 dimensional…
We investigate recent claims that brane inflation solves the overshoot problem through a combination of microphysical restrictions on the phase space of initial conditions and the existence of the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) attractor in regimes where the slow-roll attractor does not apply. Carrying out a comprehensive analysis of the parameter space allowed by the latest advances in brane inflation model-building, we find that these restrictions are insufficient to solve the overshoot problem. The vast majority of the phase space of initial conditions is still dominated by overshoot trajectories.…
The gauge theory on a set of D3-branes at a toric Calabi-Yau singularity can be encoded in a tiling of the 2-torus denoted dimer diagram (or brane tiling). We use these techniques to describe the effect on the gauge theory of geometric operations partially smoothing the singularity at which D3-branes sit, namely partial resolutions and complex deformations. More specifically, we describe the effect of arbitrary partial resolutions, including those which split the original singularity into two separated. The gauge theory correspondingly splits into two sectors (associated to branes in either si…
