For graphs $H$ and $F$, the generalized Turán number $ex(n,H,F)$ is the largest number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. We say that $H$ is $F$-Turán-good if $ex(n,H,F)$ is the number of copies in the $(χ(F)-1)$-partite Turán graph, provided $n$ is large enough.
We present a general theorem in case $F$ has an edge whose deletion decreases the chromatic number. In particular, this determines $ex(n,P_k,C_{2\ell+1})$ and $ex(n,C_{2k},C_{2\ell+1})$ exactly, if $n$ is large enough. We also study the case when $F$ has a vertex whose deletion decreases the chromatic number.
For a graph $H$ and a $k$-chromatic graph $F,$ if the Turán graph $T_{k-1}(n)$ has the maximum number of copies of $H$ among all $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs (for $n$ large enough), then $H$ is called $F$-Turán-good, or $k$-Turán-good for short if $F$ is $K_k.$ In this paper, we construct some new classes of $k$-Turán-good graphs and prove that $P_4$ and $P_5$ are $k$-Turán-good for $k\ge4.$
Given graphs $H$ and $F$ with $χ(H)<χ(F)$, we say that $H$ is weakly $F$-Turán-good if among $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs, a $(χ(F)-1)$-partite graph contains the most copies of $H$. Let $H$ be a bipartite graph that contains a complete bipartite subgraph $K$ such that each vertex of $H$ is adjacent to a vertex of $K$. We show that $H$ is weakly $K_3$-Turán-good, improving a very recent asymptotic bound due to Grzesik, Gy\H ori, Salia and Tompkins. They also showed that for any $r$ there exist graphs that are not weakly $K_r$-Turán-good. We show that for any non-bipartite $F$ there exists graphs…
The generalized Turán problem $ext(n,T,F)$ is to determine the maximal number of copies of a graph $T$ that can exist in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Recently, Gerbner and Palmer noted that the solution to the generalized Turán problem is often the original Turán graph. They gave the name "$F$-Turán-good" to graphs $T$ for which, for large enough $n$, the solution to the generalized Turán problem is realized by a Turán graph. They prove that the path graph on two edges, $P_2$, is $K_{r+1}$-Turán-good for all $r \ge 3$, but they conjecture that the same result should hold for all $P_\ell$…
Fix a $k$-chromatic graph $F$. In this paper we consider the question to determine for which graphs $H$ does the Turán graph $T_{k-1}(n)$ have the maximum number of copies of $H$ among all $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs (for $n$ large enough). We say that such a graph $H$ is $F$-Turán-good. In addition to some general results, we give (among others) the following concrete results: (i) For every complete multipartite graph $H$, there is $k$ large enough such that $H$ is $K_k$-Turán-good. (ii) The path $P_3$ is $F$-Turán-good for $F$ with $χ(F) \geq 4$. (iii) The path $P_4$ and cycle $C_4$ are $C_5$…
Given an $(r+1)$-chromatic graph $F$ and a graph $H$ that does not contain $F$ as a subgraph, we say that $H$ is strictly $F$-Turán-good if the Turán graph $T_{r}(n)$ is the unique graph containing the maximum number of copies of $H$ among all $F$-free graphs on $n$ vertices for every $n$ large enough. Győri, Pach and Simonovits (1991) proved that cycle $C_4$ of length four is strictly $K_{r+1}$-Turán-good for all $r\geq 2$. In this article, we extend this result and show that $C_4$ is strictly $F$-Turán-good, where $F$ is an $(r+1)$-chromatic graph with $r\ge 2$ and a color-critical edge. Mor…
For graphs $H$ and $F$ with chromatic number $χ(F)=k$, we call $H$ strictly $F$-Turán-good (or $(H, F)$ strictly Turán-good) if the Turán graph $T_{k-1}(n)$ is the unique $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices containing the largest number of copies of $H$ when $n$ is large enough. Let $F$ be a graph with chromatic number $χ(F)\geq 3$ and a color-critical edge and let $P_\ell$ be a path with $\ell$ vertices. Gerbner and Palmer (2020, arXiv:2006.03756) showed that $(P_3, F)$ is strictly Turán good if $χ(H)\ge 4$ and they conjectured that (a) this result is true when $χ(F)=3$, and, moreover, (b) $(P_\el…
It is known that the connected graphs that are $p$-good for all $p$ are the trees. In this paper, we ask which ordered trees are order-$p$-good for all $p$.
Given graphs $H_1, H_2, \dots, H_k$, the Ramsey number $R(H_1, \dots, H_k)$ is the smallest integer $n$ for which in any coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_n$ with colors $1,2,\dots,k$, there is some color $i$ with a monochromatic copy of $H_i$. We call a tuple $(H_1, \dots, H_k)$ good if for every $k$-coloring of the edges of an $R(H_1, \dots, H_k)$-chromatic graph, there is some color $i$ with a monochromatic copy of $H_i$. We call a graph $H$ $k$-good if the $k$-tuple $(H, H, \dots, H)$ is good, and $H$ is good if it is $k$-good for every $k$. Bialostocki and Gyárfás proved that…
A good edge-labelling of a simple graph is a labelling of its edges with real numbers such that, for any ordered pair of vertices (u,v), there is at most one nondecreasing path from u to v. Say a graph is good if it admits a good edge-labelling, and is bad otherwise. Our main result is that any good n-vertex graph whose maximum degree is within a constant factor of its average degree (in particular, any good regular graph) has at most n^{1+o(1)} edges. As a corollary, we show that there are bad graphs with arbitrarily large girth, answering a question of Bode, Farzad and Theis. We also prove t…
We study graphs which admit an acyclic orientation that contains an out-branching and in-branching which are arc-disjoint (such an orientation is called {\bf good}). A {\bf 2T-graph} is a graph whose edge set can be decomposed into two edge-disjoint spanning trees. Clearly a graph has a good orientation if and only if it contains a spanning 2T-graph with a good orientation, implying that 2T-graphs play a central role. Vertex-minimal 2T-graphs with at least two vertices, also known as {\bf generic circuits}, play an important role in rigidity theory for graphs. It was shown in \cite{bangGOpaper…
The transition matrix of a graph $G$ corresponding to the adjacency matrix $A$ is defined by $H(t):=\exp{\left(-itA\right)},$ where $t\in\mathbb{R}$. The graph is said to exhibit pretty good state transfer between a pair of vertices $u$ and $v$ if there exists a sequence $\left\lbrace t_k\right\rbrace$ of real numbers such that $\lim\limits_{k\rightarrow\infty} H(t_k) {\bf e}_u=γ{\bf e}_v$, where $γ$ is a complex number of unit modulus. We classify some circulant graphs exhibiting or not exhibiting pretty good state transfer. This generalize several pre-existing results on circulant graphs adm…
Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A$. The transition matrix of $G$ relative to $A$ is defined by $H(t):=\exp{\left(-itA\right)},\;t\in\Rl$. The graph $G$ is said to admit pretty good state transfer between a pair of vertices $u$ and $v$ if there exists a sequence of real numbers $\{t_k\}$ and a complex number $γ$ of unit modulus such that $\lim\limits_{k\rightarrow\infty} H(t_k) e_u=γe_v.$ We find that pretty good state transfer occurs in a cycle on $n$ vertices if and only if $n$ is a power of two and it occurs between every pair of antipodal vertices. In addition, we look for pretty …

In this paper, we consider the Johnson's graphs. We study the extremal properties of the Johnson's graphs. Namely, we investigate the number of edges in an arbitrary subgraph of this graph. Namely, in this article we prove analogs of Turan's 1941 theorem.
For d-regular graph G, an edge-signing sigma:E(G) \rightarrow {-1,1} is called a good signing if the absolute eigenvalues of adjacency matrix are at most 2 \sqrt{d-1}. Bilu-Linial conjectured that for each regular graph there exists a good signing. In this paper, by using new concept "Equitable Partition", we solve the Bilu-Linial Conjecture for some cases. We show that how to find out a good signing for special complete graphs and lexicographic product of two graphs. In particular, if there exist two good signings for graph G, then we can find a good signing for a 2-lift of G.
In this paper we study graphs which admit acyclic orientations that contain a pair of arc-disjoint out-branching and in-branching (such an orientation is called good) and we focus on edge-minimal such graphs. A 2T-graph is a graph whose edge set can be decomposed into two edge-disjoint spanning trees. Vertex-minimal 2T-graphs with at least two vertices which are known as generic circuits play an important role in rigidity theory for graphs. We prove that every generic circuit has a good orientation. Using this result we prove that if $G$ is 2T-graph whose vertex set has a partition $V_1,V_2,\l…
Given two graphs $H$ and $F$, the generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ is the largest number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph. For every $F$ and sufficiently large $n$, we present an extremal graph for a generalized Turán problem, i.e., an $F$-free $n$ vertex graph $G$ that for some $H$ contains exactly $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ copies of $H$.
The prism over a graph $G$ is the Cartesian product of $G$ with the complete graph $K_2$. $G$ is prism-hamiltonian if the prism over $G$ has a Hamilton cycle. A good even cactus is a connected graph in which every block is either an edge or an even cycle, and every vertex is contained in at most two blocks. It is known that good even cacti are prism-hamiltonian. Indeed, showing the existence of a spanning good even cactus has become one of the most common techniques in proving prism-hamiltonicity. Špacapan asked whether having a spanning good even cactus is equivalent to having a hamiltonian p…

A good edge-labelling of a simple, finite graph is a labelling of its edges with real numbers such that, for every ordered pair of vertices (u,v), there is at most one nondecreasing path from u to v. In this paper we prove that any graph on n vertices that admits a good edge-labelling has at most n log_2(n)/2 edges, and that this bound is tight for infinitely many values of n. Thus we significantly improve on the previously best known bounds. The main tool of the proof is a combinatorial lemma which might be of independent interest. For every n we also construct an n-vertex graph that admits a…
For graph $G$, $F$ and integer $n$, the generalized Tuán number $ex(n,G,F)$ denotes the maximum number of copies of $G$ that an $F$-free $n$-vertex graph can have. We study this parameter when both $G$ and $F$ are complete bipartite graphs.
For graphs $H$ and $F$, the generalized Turán number $ex(n,H,F)$ is the largest number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. We consider this problem when both $H$ and $F$ have at most four vertices. We give sharp results in almost all cases, and connect the remaining cases to well-known unsolved problems. Our main new contribution is applying the progressive induction method of Simonovits for generalized Turán problems.
The Turán density $π(\cal F)$ of a family $\cal F$ of $r$-graphs is the limit as $n\to\infty$ of the maximum edge density of an $\cal F$-free $r$-graph on $n$ vertices. Erdos [Israel J. Math 2 (1964) 183--190] proved that no Turán density can lie in the open interval $(0,r!/r^r)$. Here we show that any other open subinterval of $[0,1]$ avoiding Turán densities has strictly smaller length. In particular, this implies a conjecture of Grosu [E-print arXiv:1403.4653v1, 2014].

In this paper we initiate a systematic study of the Turán problem for edge-ordered graphs. A simple graph is called $\textit{edge-ordered}$, if its edges are linearly ordered. An isomorphism between edge-ordered graphs must respect the edge-order. A subgraph of an edge-ordered graph is itself an edge-ordered graph with the induced edge-order. We say that an edge-ordered graph $G$ $\textit{avoids}$ another edge-ordered graph $H$, if no subgraph of $G$ is isomorphic to $H$. The $\textit{Turán number}$ of an edge-ordered graph $H$ is the maximum number of edges in an edge-ordered graph on $n$ ver…
A good edge-labeling of a graph [Araújo, Cohen, Giroire, Havet, Discrete Appl. Math., forthcoming] is an assignment of numbers to the edges such that for no pair of vertices, there exist two non-decreasing paths. In this paper, we study edge-labeling on graphs with girth at least 5. In particular we verify, under this additional hypothesis, a conjecture by Araújo et al. This conjecture states that if the average degree of G is less than 3 and G is minimal without an edge-labeling, then G \in {C_3,K_{2,3}}. (For the case when the girth is 4, we give a counterexample.)
We prove a linear recurrence relation for a large family of generalized Schreier sets, which generalizes the Fibonacci recurrence proved by Bird and higher order Fibonacci recurrence proved by the second author et al. Furthermore, we show a relationship between Schreier-type sets and Turán graphs.
For two graphs $G$ and $H$, the Turán number $ex(G,H)$ is the maximum number of edges in a subgraph of $G$ that contains no copy of $H$. Chen, Li, and Tu determined the Turán numbers $ex(K_{m,n},kK_2)$ for all $k\geq 1$ [7]. In this paper we will determine the Turán numbers $ex(K_{a_1,\ldots,a_r},kK_r)$ for all $r\geq 3$ and $k\geq 1$.
We consider the Turán problems of $2$-edge-colored graphs. A $2$-edge-colored graph $H=(V, E_r, E_b)$ is a triple consisting of the vertex set $V$, the set of red edges $E_r$ and the set of blue edges $E_b$ with $E_r$ and $E_b$ do not have to be disjoint. The Turán density $π(H)$ of $H$ is defined to be $\lim_{n\to\infty} \max_{G_n}h_n(G_n)$, where $G_n$ is chosen among all possible $2$-edge-colored graphs on $n$ vertices containing no $H$ as a sub-graph and $h_n(G_n)=(|E_r(G)|+|E_b(G)|)/{n\choose 2}$ is the formula to measure the edge density of $G_n$. We will determine the Turán densities of…
We consider a problem proposed by Linial and Wilf to determine the structure of graphs that allows the maximum number of $q$-colorings among graphs with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. Let $T_r(n)$ denote the Turán graph - the complete $r$-partite graph on $n$ vertices with partition sizes as equal as possible. We prove that for all odd integers $q\geq 5$ and sufficiently large $n$, the Turán graph $T_2(n)$ has at least as many $q$-colorings as any other graph $G$ with the same number of vertices and edges as $T_2(n)$, with equality holding if and only if $G=T_2(n)$. Our proof builds on methods by…
Given two graphs $H$ and $F$, the maximum possible number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices is denoted by $ex(n,H,F)$. We investigate the function $ex(n,H,kF)$, where $kF$ denotes $k$ vertex disjoint copies of a fixed graph $F$. Our results include cases when $F$ is a complete graph, cycle or a complete bipartite graph.
Trees fill many extremal roles in graph theory, being minimally connected and serving a critical role in the definition of $n$-good graphs. In this article, we consider the generalization of trees to the setting of $r$-uniform hypergraphs and how one may extend the notion of $n$-good graphs to this setting. We prove numerous bounds for $r$-uniform hypergraph Ramsey numbers involving trees and complete hypergraphs and show that in the $3$-uniform case, all trees are $n$-good when $n$ is odd or $n$ falls into specified even cases.
Connectivity and diagnosability are two important parameters for the fault tolerant of an interconnection network $G$. In 1996, Fàbrega and Fiol proposed the $g$-good-neighbor connectivity of $G$. In this paper, we show that $1\leq κ^g(G)\leq n-2g-2$ for $0\leq g\leq \left\{Δ(G),\left\lfloor \frac{n-3}{2}\right\rfloor\right\}$, and graphs with $κ^g(G)=1,2$ and trees with $κ^g(T_n)=n-t$ for $4\leq t\leq \frac{n+2}{2}$ are characterized, respectively. In the end, we get the three extremal results for the $g$-good-neighbor connectivity.
The Turan number of a graph H, ex(n,H), is the maximum number of edges in a graph on n vertices which does not have H as a subgraph. We determine the Turan number and find the unique extremal graph for forests consisting of paths when n is sufficiently large. This generalizes a result of Bushaw and Kettle [ Combinatorics, Probability and Computing 20:837--853, 2011]. We also determine the Turan number and extremal graphs for forests consisting of stars of arbitrary order.
We revisit the classical question of the relationship between the diameter of a graph and its expansion properties. One direction is well understood: expander graphs exhibit essentially the lowest possible diameter. We focus on the reverse direction, showing that "sufficiently large" graphs of fixed diameter and degree must be "good" expanders. We prove this statement for various definitions of "sufficiently large" (multiplicative/additive factor from the largest possible size), for different forms of expansion (edge, vertex, and spectral expansion), and for both directed and undirected graphs…

We consider an infinite version of the bipartite Turán problem. Let $G$ be an infinite graph with $V(G) = \mathbb{N}$ and let $G_n$ be the $n$-vertex subgraph of $G$ induced by the vertices $\{1,2, \dots, n \}$. We show that if $G$ is $K_{2,t+1}$-free then for infinitely many $n$, $e(G_n) \leq 0.471 \sqrt{t} n^{3/2}$. Using the $K_{2,t+1}$-free graphs constructed by Füredi, we construct an infinite $K_{2,t+1}$-free graph with $e(G_n) \geq 0.23 \sqrt{t}n^{3/2}$ for all $n \geq n_0$.
The theta graph $Θ_{\ell,t}$ consists of two vertices joined by $t$ vertex-disjoint paths of length $\ell$ each. For fixed odd $\ell$ and large $t$, we show that the largest graph not containing $Θ_{\ell,t}$ has at most $c_{\ell} t^{1-1/\ell}n^{1+1/\ell}$ edges and that this is tight apart from the value of $c_{\ell}$.
The generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs. We consider the case where $χ(H)<χ(F)$. There are several exact results on $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ when the extremal graph is a complete $(χ(F)-1)$-partite graph. We obtain multiple exact results with other kinds of extremal graphs.
Given a graph $H$ and a positive integer $n,$ the Turán number of $H$ for the order $n,$ denoted ${\rm ex}(n,H),$ is the maximum size of a simple graph of order $n$ not containing $H$ as a subgraph. The book with $p$ pages, denoted $B_p$, is the graph that consists of $p$ triangles sharing a common edge. Bollobás and Erdős initiated the research on the Turán number of book graphs in 1975. The two numbers ${\rm ex}(p+2,B_p)$ and ${\rm ex}(p+3,B_p)$ have been determined by Qiao and Zhan. In this paper we determine the numbers ${\rm ex}(p+4,B_p),$ ${\rm ex}(p+5,B_p)$ and ${\rm ex}(p+6,B_p),$ and …
Given graphs $H$ and $F$, the generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ is the largest number of copies of $H$ in $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs. Stability refers to the usual phenomenon that if an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph $G$ contains almost $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ copies of $H$, than $G$ is in some sense similar to some extremal graph. We obtain new stability results for generalized Turán problems and derive several new exact results.
If $\mathcal{F}$ is a family of graphs then the Turán density of $\mathcal{F}$ is determined by the minimum chromatic number of the members of $\mathcal{F}$. The situation for Turán densities of 3-graphs is far more complex and still very unclear. Our aim in this paper is to present new exact Turán densities for individual and finite families of 3-graphs, in many cases we are also able to give corresponding stability results. As well as providing new examples of individual 3-graphs with Turán densities equal to 2/9,4/9,5/9 and 3/4 we also give examples of irrational Turán densities for finite …
We suggest a new type of problem about distances in graphs and make several conjectures. As a first step towards proving them, we show that for sufficiently large values of n and k, a graph on n vertices that has no three vertices at pairwise distance k has at most (n-k+1)^2/4 pairs of vertices at distance k.
For a fixed set of positive integers $R$, we say $\mathcal{H}$ is an $R$-uniform hypergraph, or $R$-graph, if the cardinality of each edge belongs to $R$. For a graph $G=(V,E)$, a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is called a Berge-$G$, denoted by $BG$, if there exists a bijection $f: E(G) \to E(\mathcal{H})$ such that for every $e \in E(G)$, $e \subseteq f(e)$. In this paper, we define a variant of Turán number in hypergraphs, namely the cover Turán number, denoted as $\hat{ex}_R(n, G)$, as the maximum number of edges in the shadow graph of a Berge-$G$ free $R$-graph on $n$ vertices. We show a general…
Recently, a relation between Schreier-type sets and Turán graphs was discovered. In this note, we give a combinatorial proof and obtain a generalization of the relation. Specifically, for $p, q\ge 1$, let $$\mathcal{A}_q := \{F\subset\mathbb{N}: |F| = 1 \mbox{ or }F\mbox{ is an arithmetic progression with difference } q\}$$ and $$Sr(n, p, q)\ :=\ \#\{F\subset \{1, \ldots, n\}\,:\, p\min F\ge |F|\mbox{ and }F\in \mathcal{A}_q\}.$$ We show that $$Sr(n, p, q) \ =\ T(n+1, pq+1, q),$$ where $T(\cdot, \cdot, \cdot)$ is the number of edges of an $n$-vertex graph that is a modification of Turán graphs…
The Turán number of a graph $H$, $ex(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in a simple graph of order $n$ which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Let $k\cdot P_3$ denote $k$ disjoint copies of a path on $3$ vertices. In this paper, we determine the value $ex(n, k\cdot P_3)$ and characterize all extremal graphs. This extends a result of Bushaw and Kettle [N. Bushaw and N. Kettle, Turán Numbers of multiple and equibipartite forests, Combin. Probab. Comput., 20(2011) 837-853.], which solved the conjecture proposed by Gorgol in [I. Gorgol. Turán numbers for disjoint copies of graphs. {\it Graphs…
We study Turán and Ramsey-type problems on edge-colored graphs. An edge-colored graph is called {\em $\varepsilon$-balanced} if each color class contains at least an $\varepsilon$-proportion of its edges. Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of edge-colored graphs, the Ramsey function $R(\varepsilon, \mathcal{F})$ is the smallest $n$ for which any $\varepsilon$-balanced $K_n$ must contain a copy of an $F\in\mathcal{F}$, and the Turán function $\mathrm{ex}(\varepsilon, n, \mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $\varepsilon$-balanced graph which avoids all of $\mathcal{F}$. In thi…
