We prove Grauert-Riemenschneider-type vanishing theorems for excellent dlt threefolds pairs whose closed points have perfect residue fields of positive characteristic $p>5$. Then we discuss applications to dlt singularities and to Mori fiber spaces of threefolds.
In this note we show a Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for pl-contractions on threefolds in characteristic $p>5$. We deduce several applications for klt threefolds: the vanishing of higher direct images of structure sheaves of Mori fibre spaces, Kollár's result on local vanishing and the rationality of the singularities of the base of a conic bundle.
We prove the Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality conjectured by Bayer, Macri and Toda for threefolds with semistable tangent bundles and vanishing Chern classes in any characteristic, which was originally proved by Bayer, Macri and Stellari in characteristic zero. This gives the existence of Bridgeland stability conditions on such threefolds. As applications, we obtain Reider type theorem and confirm Fujita's conjecture for such threefolds in any characteristic.
In this paper, we show that every invertible subsheaf of the cotangent bundle of a smooth globally $F$-regular threefold of characteristic $p>3$ has Iitaka dimension less than or equal to one.
We prove a relative Kawamata Viehweg vanishing type theorem for birational morphisms. We use this to prove a Grauert Riemenschneider theorem over log canonical threefolds without zero dimensional log canonical centers, in residue characteristic p greater than five. In large enough residue characteristics, we prove a Grauert Riemenschneider theorem over threefold log canonical singularities with standard coefficients. These vanishing theorems can also be used to study the depth of log canonical singularities at non log canonical centers, as well as the singularities of the log canonical centers…
Let X be a smooth projective threefold, and let A be an ample line bundle such that $K_X+A$ is nef. We show that if $K_X$ or $-K_X$ is pseudoeffective, the adjoint bundle $K_X+A$ has global sections. We also give a very short proof of the Beltrametti-Sommese conjecture in dimension three, recently proven by Fukuma: if A is an ample line bundle such that $K_X+2A$ is nef, the adjoint bundle $K_X+2A$ has global sections.
This paper proves that the 5-canonical map of a smooth minimal 3-fold is birational when the geometric genus is bigger than 2. A combination of the results in this paper and that of Ein-Lazarsfeld-Lee, the possible exceptional cases are very limited. Unfortunately, no counter examples have been found up to now.
The existence of a vector field on a compact Kaehler manifold with nonempty zero locus and the properties of this zero locus strongly influence the geometry of the manifold. For example, J. Wahl proved that the existence of a vector field vanishing on an ample divisor of a projective normal variety X implies that X is a cone over this divisor. If X is smooth, X will be isomorphic to the n-dimensional projective space. This paper is a first attempt to generalize Wahl's theorem to higher codimensions: Given a complex smooth projective threefold X and a vector field on X vanishing on an irreducib…
In this article, we study the possibility of producing a Calabi-Yau threefold in positive characteristic which is a counter-example to Kodaira vanishing. The only known method to construct the counter-example is so called inductive method such as the Raynaud-Mukai construction or Russel construction. We consider Mukai's method and its modification. Finally, as an application of Shepherd-Barron vanishing theorem of Fano threefolds, we compute $H^1(X, H^{-1})$ for any ample line bundle $H$ on a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ on which Kodaira vanishing fails.
The paper investigates the non-vanishing of $H^1(E(n))$, where $E$ is a (normalized) rank two vector bundle over any smooth irreducible threefold $X$ of degree $d$ such that $Pic(X) \cong \ZZ$. If $ε$ is the integer defined by the equality $ω_X = O_X(ε)$, and $α$ is the least integer $t$ such that $H^0(E(t)) \ne 0$, then, for a non-stable $E$ ($α\le 0$) the first cohomology module does not vanish at least between the endpoints $\frac{ε-c_1}{2}$ and $-α-c_1-1$. The paper also shows that there are other non-vanishing intervals, whose endpoints depend on $α$ and also on the second Chern class $c_…
We consider Calabi-Yau threefolds $X$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ that are not liftable to characteristic $0$ or liftable ones with $p=2$. It is unknown whether Kodaira vanishing holds for these varieties. In this paper, we give a lower bound of $h^1(X, L^{-1})=\dim_k H^1(X, L^{-1})$ if $L$ is an ample divisor with $H^1(X, L^{-1})\ne{0}$. Moreover, we show that a Kodaira type vanishing holds if $X$ is a Schröer variety or a Schoen variety, which extends the similar result given in my previous paper for the Hirokado variety. We show that such kind of vanishing…
In this paper, we establish a vanishing theorem of Nadel type for the Witt multiplier ideals on threefolds over perfect fields of characteristic larger than five. As an application, if a projective normal threefold over $\mathbb{F}_q$ is not klt and its canonical divisor is anti-ample, then the number of the rational points on the klt-locus is divisible by $q$.
We consider algebraic manifolds $Y$ of dimension 3 over $\Bbb{C}$ with $H^i(Y, Ω^j_Y)=0$ for all $j\geq 0$ and $i>0$. Let $X$ be a smooth completion of $Y$ with $D=X-Y$, an effective divisor on $X$ with normal crossings. If the $D$-dimension of $X$ is not zero, then $Y$ is a fibre space over a smooth affine curve $C$ (i.e., we have a surjective morphism from $Y$ to $C$ such that general fibre is smooth and irreducible) such that every fibre satisfies the same vanishing condition. If an irreducible smooth fibre is not affine, then the Kodaira dimension of $X$ is $-\infty$ and the $D$-dimension …
Desingularized fiber products of semi-stable, non-isotrivial jacobian elliptic surfaces with vanishing third Betti number are classified. Such varieties may play a role in the study of supersingular threefolds, of the deformation theory of varieties with trivial canonical bundle, and of the arithmetic degenerations of rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds.
We prove that for smooth projective threefolds whose anticanonical divisors are nef, the second Chern classes are pseudo-effective under a weak assumption. As an application, the pseudo-effectivity of the second Chern classes implies that Kawamata's Effective Non-vanishing Conjecture holds for such threefolds.
We analyze the structure of the algebraic manifolds $Y$ of dimension 3 with $H^i(Y, Ω^j_Y)=0$ for all $j\geq 0$, $i>0$ and $h^0(Y, {\mathcal{O}}_Y) > 1$, by showing the deformation invariant of some open surfaces. Secondly, we show when a smooth threefold with nonconstant regular functions satisfies the vanishing Hodge cohomology. As an application, we prove the existence of nonaffine and nonproduct threefolds $Y$ with this property by constructing a family of a certain type of open surfaces parametrized by the affine curve $\C-\{0\}$ such that the corresponding smooth completion $X$ has Kodai…
We establish a global Torelli theorem for the complete family of Calabi-Yau threefolds arising from cyclic triple covers of $\mathbb P^3$ branched along stable hyperplane arrangements.
We prove the factoriality of the following nodal threefolds: a complete intersection of hypersurfaces $F$ and $G\subset\mathbb{P}^{5}$ of degree $n$ and $k$ respectively, where $G$ is smooth, $|\mathrm{Sing}(F\cap G)|\leqslant(n+k-2)(n-1)/5$, $n\geqslant k$; a double cover of a smooth hypersurface $F\subset\mathbb{P}^{4}$ of degree $n$ branched over a surface that is cut out on $F$ by a hypersurface $G$ of degree $2r\geqslant n$, and $|\mathrm{Sing}(F\cap G)|\leqslant(2r+n-2)r/4$.
We show the abundance theorem for arithmetic klt threefold pairs whose closed point have residue characteristic greater than five. As a consequence, we give a sufficient condition for the asymptotic invariance of plurigenera for certain families of singular surface pairs to hold in mixed characteristic.
Let $S$ be a nonsingular minimal complex projective surface of general type and the canonical map of $S$ is generically finite. Beauville showed that the geometric genus of the image of the canonical map is vanishing or equals the geometric genus of $S$ and discussed the canonical degrees for these two cases. We generalize his results to nonsingular minimal complex projective threefolds.
In this article we present a refinement of the base point free theorem for threefolds in positive characteristic. If $L$ is a nef Cartier divisor of numerical dimension at least one on a projective Kawamata log terminal threefold $(X,Δ)$ over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p \gg 0$ such that $L-(K_X+Δ)$ is big and nef, then we show that the linear system $|mL|$ is base point free for all sufficiently large integer $m>0$.
We prove the base point free theorem for big line bundles on a three-dimensional log canonical projective pair defined over the algebraic closure of a finite field.
In this paper, we prove a Kawamata--Viehweg type vanishing theorem for smooth Fano threefolds, canonical del Pezzo surfaces and del Pezzo fibrations in positive characteristic.
Let $(X, Δ)$ be a projective klt three dimensional pair defined over an algebraically closed field characteristic larger than 5. Let $L$ be a nef and big line bundle on $X$ such that $L-K_X-Δ$ is big and nef. We show that $L$ is indeed semi-ample.
This is a correction to the afore-mentioned paper in Duke Math. J. vol. 75 (1994), 99-119 by S. Keel, K. Matsuki, and J. McKernan. We completely rewrite Chapter 6 according to the original manuscript of the second author, in order to fix some crucial mistakes pointed out by Dr. Qihong Xie.
Let $(X,D)$ be log canonical pair such $\dim X = 3$ and the divisor $-(K_X + D)$ is nef and big. For a special class of such $(X,D)$'s we prove that the linear system $|-n(K_{X}+D)|$ is free for $n \gg 0$.
We investigate compact complex manifolds of dimension three and second Betti number $b_2(X) = 0$. We are interested in the algebraic dimension $a(X)$, which is by definition the transcendence degree of the field of meromorphic functions over the field of complex numbers. The topological Euler characteristic $χ_{\mathrm{ top}}(X) $ equals the third Chern class $c_3(X)$ by a theorem of Hopf. Our main result is that, if $X$ is a compact 3-dimensional complex manifold with $b_2(X) = 0$ and $a(X) > 0$, then $c_3(X) = χ_{\rm top}(X) = 0$, that is, we either have $b_1(X) = 0, \ b_3(X) = 2$ or $b_1(X)…
We prove the genus-one restriction of the all-genus Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau conjecture of Chiodo and Ruan, stated in terms of the geometric quantization of an explicit symplectomorphism determined by genus-zero invariants. This provides the first evidence supporting the higher-genus Landau-Ginzburg/Calabi-Yau correspondence for the quintic threefold, and exhibits the first instance of the "genus zero controls higher genus" principle, in the sense of Givental's quantization formalism, for non-semisimple cohomological field theories.
We give the lower bound on Seshadri constants for the case of very ample line bundles on threefolds. We consider the situation when the Seshadri constant is strictly less than 2 and give a version of Bauer's theorem \cite[Theorem 2.1]{B1} for singular surfaces so we can prove the same result for smooth threefolds.
Let E be a stable rank 2 vector bundle on a smooth quadric threefold Q in the projective 4-space P. We show that the hyperplanes H in P for which the restriction of E to the hyperplane section of Q by H is not stable form, in general, a closed subset of codimension at least 2 of the dual projective 4-space, and we explicitly describe the bundles E which do not enjoy this property. This refines a restriction theorem of Ein and Sols [Nagoya Math. J. 96, 11-22 (1984)] in the same way the main result of Coanda [J. reine angew. Math. 428, 97-110 (1992)] refines the restriction theorem of Barth [Mat…
We construct a klt del Pezzo surface in characteristic three violating the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem. As a consequence we show that there exists a Kawamata log terminal threefold singularity which is not Cohen-Macaulay in characteristic three.
We give the multiplicity of terminal singularities on threefolds by simple calculation. Then we obtain the best inequalities for the multiplicity and the index. By using this, we can improve the boundedness number of terminal weak Q-Fano 3-folds in [KMMT, Theorem 1.2]. Furthermore, we can extended [K, Theorem 3.6] for Fujita freeness conditions to nonhypersurface terminal singularities.
A classification theorem is given of projective threefolds that are covered by a two-dimensional family of lines, but not by a higher dimensional family.
Let $L$ be a line bundle on a K3 or Enriques surface. We give a vanishing theorem for $H^1(L)$ that, unlike most vanishing theorems, gives necessary and sufficient geometrical conditions for the vanishing. This result is essential in our study of Brill-Noether theory of curves on Enriques surfaces (reference [KL1]) and of Enriques-Fano threefolds (reference [KLM]).
We prove that up to birational equivalence, there exists only a finite number of families of Calabi-Yau threefolds (i.e. a threefold with trivial canonical class and factorial terminal singularities) which have an elliptic fibration to a rational surface. This strengthens a result of B. Hunt that there are only a finite number of possible Euler characteristics for such threefolds.
The Hirokado variety is a Calabi-Yau threefold in characteristic 3 that is not liftable either to characteristic~0 or the ring $W_2$ of the second Witt vectors. Although Deligne-Illusie-Raynaud type Kodaira vanishing cannot be applied, we show that $H^1(X, L^{-1})=0$, for an ample line bundle such that $L^3$ has a non-trivial global section, holds for this variety.
This work makes a parallel construction for curves on threefolds to a ``current-theoretic'' proof of Abel's theorem giving the rational equivalence of divisors P and Q on a Riemann surface when Q - P is (equivalent to) zero in the Jacobian variety of the Riemann surface. The parallel construction is made for homologous ''sub-canonical'' curves P and Q on a general class of threefolds. If P and Q are algebraically equivalent and Q - P is zero in the (intermediate) Jacobian of a threefold, the construction ''almost'' gives rational equivalence.
We prove a Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem on a normal compact Kahler space X: if L is a nef line bundle with numerical dimension at least equal to 2, then the q-th cohomology group of K_X+L vanishes for q at least equal to the dimension of X minus 1. As an application, a special case of the abundance conjecture for minimal Kahler threefolds is proven: if X is a minimal Kahler threefold (in the usual sense that K_X is nef), then the Kodaira dimension kappa(X) is nonnegative.
We prove a categorical version of the Torelli theorem for cubic threefolds. More precisely, we show that the non-trivial part of a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the derived category of a cubic threefold characterizes its isomorphism class.
We prove the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for surfaces of del Pezzo type over perfect fields of positive characteristic $p>5$. As a consequence, we show that klt threefold singularities over a perfect base field of characteristic $p>5$ are rational. We show that these theorems are sharp by providing counterexamples in characteristic $5$.
We prove a structure theorem for non-isomorphic endomorphisms of weak Q-Fano threefolds, or more generally for threefolds with big anti-canonical divisor. Also provided is a criterion for a fibred rationally connected threefold to be rational. As a consequence, we show (without using the classification) that every smooth Fano threefold having a non-isomorphic surjective endomorphism is rational.
Let $X$ be a Gorenstein minimal projective 3-fold with at worst locally factorial terminal singularities. Suppose the canonical map is of fiber type. Denote by $F$ a smooth model of a generic irreducible component in fibers of the canonical map of $X$ and so $F$ is a smooth curve or a smooth surface. The main result of the paper is that there is a computable constant $K$ (independent of $X$) such that $g(F)\leq 647$ or $p_g(F)\leq 38$ whenever $p_g(X)\geq K$. The method heavily relies on both a Noether type of inequality and a Miyaoka-Yau inequality and that is the reason we only treat a Goren…
