We prove the factoriality of the following nodal threefolds: a complete intersection of hypersurfaces $F$ and $G\subset\mathbb{P}^{5}$ of degree $n$ and $k$ respectively, where $G$ is smooth, $|\mathrm{Sing}(F\cap G)|\leqslant(n+k-2)(n-1)/5$, $n\geqslant k$; a double cover of a smooth hypersurface $F\subset\mathbb{P}^{4}$ of degree $n$ branched over a surface that is cut out on $F$ by a hypersurface $G$ of degree $2r\geqslant n$, and $|\mathrm{Sing}(F\cap G)|\leqslant(2r+n-2)r/4$.
We prove the general diagram method theorem valid for the quite large class of 3-folds with Q-factorial singularities (see Basic Theorem 1.3.2 and also Theorem 2.2.6). This gives the generalization of our results about Fano 3-folds with Q-factorial terminal singularities (Preprint alg-geom/9311007). As an application, we get the following result about 3-dimensional Calabi-Yau manifolds X: Assume that the Picard number ρ(X) > 93. Then one of two cases (i) or (ii) holds: (i) there exists a small extremal ray on X; (ii) There exists a nef element h such that h^3=0 (thus, the nef cone NEF(X) and t…
We define and calculate the weighted multiplicities of non Gorenstein terminal singularities on threefolds and some quotient singularities. We improve freeness conditions on threefolds.
We prove that a nodal quartic threefold $X$ containing no planes is $Q$-factorial provided that it has not more than 12 singular points, with the exception of a quartic with exactly 12 singularities containing a quadric surface. We give some geometrical constructions related to the latter quartic.
We investigate the existence of complete intersection threefolds $X \subset \mathbb{P}^n$ with only isolated, ordinary multiple points and we provide some sufficient conditions for their factoriality.
Let X be a complete intersection of two hypersurfaces F_n and F_k in the projective space P^5 of degree n and k respectively with n >= k, such that the singularities of X are nodal and F_k is smooth. We prove that if the threefold X has at most (n+k-2)(n-1)-1 singular points, then it is factorial.
We prove the $\mathbb{Q}$-factoriality of a nodal hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{4}$ of degree $n$ with at most ${\frac{(n-1)^{2}}{4}}$ nodes and the $\mathbb{Q}$-factoriality of a double cover of $\mathbb{P}^{3}$ branched over a nodal surface of degree $2r$ with at most ${\frac{(2r-1)r}{3}}$ nodes.
The automorphism groups of certain factorial complex affine threefolds admitting locally trivial actions of the additive group are determined. As a consequence new counterexamples to a generalized cancellation problem are obtained.
We give a bound on the minimal number of singularities of a nodal projective complete intersection threefold which contains a smooth complete intersection surface that is not a Cartier divisor.
Let $X$ be a hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{4}$ of degree $d$ that has at most isolated ordinary double points. We prove that $X$ is factorial in the case when $X$ has at most $(d-1)^{2}-1$ singular points.
The $\mathbb{Q}$-factoriality of a nodal quartic 3-fold implies its non-rationality. We prove that a nodal quartic 3-fold with at most 8 nodes is $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial, and we show that a nodal quartic 3-fold with 9 nodes is not $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial if and only if it contains a plane. However, there are non-rational non-$\mathbb{Q}$-factorial nodal quartic 3-folds in $\mathbb{P}^4$. In particular, we prove the non-rationality of a general non-$\mathbb{Q}$-factorial nodal quartic 3-fold that contains either a plane or a smooth del Pezzo surface of degree 4.
The affine cancellation problem, which asks whether complex affine varieties with isomorphic cylinders are themselves isomorphic, has a positive solution for two dimensional varieties whose coordinate rings are unique factorization domains, in particular for the affine plane, but counterexamples are found within normal surfaces Danielewski surfaces and factorial threefolds of logarithmic Kodaira dimension equal to 1. The latter are therefore remote from the affine three-space, the first unknown case where the base of one cylinder is an affine space. Locally trivial Ga-actions play a significan…
We study Nash valuations and essential valuations of terminal threefolds of type $cA/r$. If $r=1$ or the given threefold is $\mathbb Q$-factorial, then all the Nash valuations and essential valuations can be completely described. We construct non-Gorenstein or non-$\mathbb Q$-factorial counter examples for the Nash problem.
We study local, global and local-to-global properties of threefolds with certain singularities. We prove criteria for these threefolds to be rational homology manifolds and conditions for threefolds to satisfy rational Poincaré duality. We relate the topological Euler characteristic of elliptic Calabi-Yau threefolds with $\mathbb Q$-factorial terminal singularities to dimensions of Lie algebras and certain representations, Milnor and Tyurina numbers and other birational invariants of an elliptic fibration. We give an interpretation in terms of complex deformations. We state a conjecture on the…
We give an upper bound for the minimal discrepancies of hypersurface singularities. As an application, we show that Shokurov's conjecture is true for log-terminal threefolds.
In this paper we classify nodal rational non-$\mathbb{Q}$-factorial del Pezzo threefolds of degree 2 which can be $G$-birationally rigid for some subgroup $G\subset \operatorname{Aut}(X)$.
We classify the non-toric, $\mathbb Q$-factorial, Gorenstein, log terminal Fano threefolds of Picard number one that admit an effective action of a two-dimensional algebraic torus.
Over a field $k$, we study rational UFDs of finite transcendence degree $n$ over $k$. We classify such UFDs $B$ when $n=2$, $k$ is algebraically closed, and $B$ admits a positive $\mathbb{Z}$-grading, showing in particular that $B$ is affine over $k$. We also consider the Russell cubic threefold over $\mathbb{C}$, and the Asanuma threefolds over a field of positive characterstic, showing that these threefolds admit no elliptic $\mathbb{G}_m$-action. Finally, we show that, if $X$ is an affine $k$-variety and $X\times\mathbb{A}^m_k\cong_k\mathbb{A}^{n+m}_k$, then $X\cong_k\mathbb{A}^n_k$ if and …
We show the validity of the relative dlt MMP over Q-factorial threefolds in all characteristics p>0. As a corollary, we generalise many recent results to low characteristics including: $W\mathcal{O}$-rationality of klt singularities, inversion of adjunction, and normality of divisorial centres up to a universal homeomorphism.
For a projective variety $Z$ and for any integer $p$, define the $p$-th Néron-Severi group $NS_p(Z)$ of $Z$ as the image of the cycle map $A_{p}(Z)\to H_{2p}(Z; \mathbb{C})$. Now let $X\subset \Ps^{2m+1}$ ($m\geq 1$) be a projective variety of dimension $2m-1$, with isolated singularities, complete intersection of a smooth hypersurface of degree $k$, with a hypersurface of degree $n>max\{k, 2m+1\}$, and let $F$ be a general hypersurface of degree $n$ containing $X$. We prove that the natural map $NS_m(X)\to NS_m(F)$ is surjective, and that if $dim NS_m(F)=1$ then $dim NS_m(X)=1$. In particular…
The main results of this paper are already known (V.V. Shokurov, the non-vanishing theorem, 1985). Moreover, the non-$\mathbb{Q}$-factorial MMP was more recently considered by O~Fujino, in the case of toric varieties (Equivariant completions of toric contraction morphisms, 2006), for klt pairs (Special termination and reduction to pl flips, 2007) and more generally for log-canonical pairs (Foundation of the minimal model program, 2014). Here we rewrite the proofs of some of these results, by following the proofs given by Y. Kawamata, K. Matsuda, and K. Matsuki (Introduction to the minimal mode…
We construct families of non-toric $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial terminal Fano ($\mathbb{Q}$-Fano) threefolds of codimension $\geq 20$ corresponding to 54 mutation classes of rigid maximally mutable Laurent polynomials. From the point of view of mirror symmetry, they are the highest codimension (non-toric) $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano varieties for which we can currently establish the Fano/Landau-Ginzburg correspondence. We construct 46 additional $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano threefolds with codimensions of new examples ranging between 19 and 10. Some of these varieties will be presented as toric complete intersections, a…
We describe recent progress in a program to understand the classification of three-dimensional Fano varieties with $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial terminal singularities using mirror symmetry. As part of this we give an improved and more conceptual understanding of Laurent inversion, a technique that sometimes allows one to construct a Fano variety $X$ directly from a Laurent polynomial $f$ that corresponds to it under mirror symmetry.
Let $X$ be a Gorenstein minimal projective $3$-fold with at worst locally factorial terminal singularities. Suppose that the canonical map is generically finite onto its image. C. Hacon showed that the canonical degree is universally bounded by $576$. We improved Hacon's universal bound to $360$. Moreover, we gave all the possible canonical degrees of $X$ if $X$ is an abelian cover over $\mathbb{P}^3$ and constructed all the examples with these canonical degrees.
We consider the Noether-Lefschetz problem for surfaces in Q-factorial normal 3-folds with rational singularities. We show the existence of components of the Noether-Lefschetz locus of maximal codimension, and that there are indeed infinitely many of them. Moreover, we show that their union is dense in the natural topology.
This paper is concerned with singular projective rationally connected threefolds $X$ which carry non-zero pluri-forms, \textit{i.e.} $H^0(X,(Ω_X^1)^{[\otimes m]}) \neq \{0\}$ for some $m > 0$, where $(Ω_X^1)^{[\otimes m]}$ is the reflexive hull of $(Ω_X^1)^{\otimes m}$. If $X$ has $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial terminal singularities, then we show that there is a fibration $p$ from $X$ to $\mathbb{P}^1$. Moreover, there is a natural isomorphism from $H^0(X, (Ω_X^1)^{[\otimes m]})$ to $H^0(\mathbb{P}^1, \mathscr{O}_{\mathbb{P}^1}(-2m+\sum_{z\in \mathbb{P}^1} [\frac{(m(p,z)-1)m}{m(p,z)}]))$ for all $m>0…
Let $X$ be a Gorenstein minimal projective 3-fold with at worst locally factorial terminal singularities. Suppose the canonical map is of fiber type. Denote by $F$ a smooth model of a generic irreducible component in fibers of the canonical map of $X$ and so $F$ is a smooth curve or a smooth surface. The main result of the paper is that there is a computable constant $K$ (independent of $X$) such that $g(F)\leq 647$ or $p_g(F)\leq 38$ whenever $p_g(X)\geq K$. The method heavily relies on both a Noether type of inequality and a Miyaoka-Yau inequality and that is the reason we only treat a Goren…

Let $X$ be a complete $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial toric variety. We explicitly describe the space $H^2(X,T_X)$ and the cup product map $H^1(X,T_X)\times H^1(X,T_X)\to H^2(X,T_X)$ in combinatorial terms. Using this, we give an example of a smooth projective toric threefold for which the cup product map does not vanish, showing that in general, smooth complete toric varieties may have obstructed deformations.
We initiate a systematic investigation of F-theory on elliptic fibrations with singularities which cannot be resolved without breaking the Calabi-Yau condition, corresponding to $\mathbb Q$-factorial terminal singularities. It is the purpose of this paper to elucidate the physical origin of such non-crepant singularities in codimension two and to systematically analyse F-theory compactifications containing such singularities. The singularities reflect the presence of localised matter states from wrapped M2-branes which are not charged under any massless gauge potential. We identify a class of …
