The existence of a vector field on a compact Kaehler manifold with nonempty zero locus and the properties of this zero locus strongly influence the geometry of the manifold. For example, J. Wahl proved that the existence of a vector field vanishing on an ample divisor of a projective normal variety X implies that X is a cone over this divisor. If X is smooth, X will be isomorphic to the n-dimensional projective space.
This paper is a first attempt to generalize Wahl's theorem to higher codimensions: Given a complex smooth projective threefold X and a vector field on X vanishing on an irreducible and reduced curve which is the scheme theoretic intersection of two ample divisors, X is isomorphic to the 3-dimensional projective space or the 3-dimensional quadric.
We investigate the globally generated vector bundles on complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds with the first Chern class at most 2. We classify all the globally generated vector bundles of an arbitrary rank on quintic in $\mathbb{P}^4$ and investigate the globally generated vector bundles of rank 2 on complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds of codimension 2.
We prove Grauert-Riemenschneider-type vanishing theorems for excellent dlt threefolds pairs whose closed points have perfect residue fields of positive characteristic $p>5$. Then we discuss applications to dlt singularities and to Mori fiber spaces of threefolds.
In this note we show a Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem for pl-contractions on threefolds in characteristic $p>5$. We deduce several applications for klt threefolds: the vanishing of higher direct images of structure sheaves of Mori fibre spaces, Kollár's result on local vanishing and the rationality of the singularities of the base of a conic bundle.
In this paper we classify all potentially G-birationally rigid del Pezzo threefolds of degree 4 and their automorphism groups and prove the G-birational rigidity of one of them
We prove the Bogomolov-Gieseker type inequality conjectured by Bayer, Macri and Toda for threefolds with semistable tangent bundles and vanishing Chern classes in any characteristic, which was originally proved by Bayer, Macri and Stellari in characteristic zero. This gives the existence of Bridgeland stability conditions on such threefolds. As applications, we obtain Reider type theorem and confirm Fujita's conjecture for such threefolds in any characteristic.
The aim of this paper is to classify indecomposable rank 2 arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay (ACM) bundles on compete intersection Calabi-Yau (CICY) threefolds and prove the existence of some of them. New geometric properties of the curves corresponding to rank 2 ACM bundles (by Serre correspondence) are obtained. These follow from minimal free resolutions of curves in suitably chosen fourfolds (containing Calabi-Yau threefolds as hypersurfaces). Also the existence of an indecomposable vector bundle of higher rank on a CICY threefold of type (2,4) is proved.
Let X be a complete intersection of two hypersurfaces F_n and F_k in the projective space P^5 of degree n and k respectively with n >= k, such that the singularities of X are nodal and F_k is smooth. We prove that if the threefold X has at most (n+k-2)(n-1)-1 singular points, then it is factorial.
Building on results of Clemens and Kley, we find criteria for a continuous family of curves in a nodal $K$-trivial threefold $Y_0$ to deform to a scheme of finitely many smooth isolated curves in a general deformation $Y_t$ of $Y_0$. As an application, we show the existence of smooth isolated curves of bounded genera and unbounded degrees in Calabi-Yau complete intersections threefolds.
In this paper, we show that every invertible subsheaf of the cotangent bundle of a smooth globally $F$-regular threefold of characteristic $p>3$ has Iitaka dimension less than or equal to one.
In this article, we construct a Hecke-equivariant Chow motive whose realizations equal intersection cohomology of Siegel threefolds with regular algebraic coefficients. As a consequence, we are able to define Grothendieck motives for Siegel modular forms.
We generalize the classical approach of describing the infinitesimal Torelli map in terms of multiplication in a Jacobi ring to the case of quasi-smooth complete intersections in weighted projective space. As an application, we prove the infinitesimal Torelli theorem for hyperelliptic Fano threefolds of Picard rank 1, index 1, degree 4 and study the action of the automorphism group on cohomology. The results of this paper are used to prove Lang-Vojta's conjecture for the moduli of such Fano threefolds in a follow-up paper.
Recently Knutsen found criteria for the curves in a complete linear system $|\mathcal{L}|$ on a smooth surface $X$ in a nodal K-trivial threefold $Y_0$ to deform to a scheme of finitely many smooth isolated curves in a general deformation $Y_t$ of $Y_0$. In this article we develop new methods to check whether the set of nodes of $Y_0$ imposes independent conditions on $|\mathcal{L}|$. As an application, we find new smooth isolated curves in complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds.
In this paper we show that a nodal complete intersection threefold $X$ in $\mathbb{P}^{3+c}$ with defect, but without induced defect, has at least $\sum_{i\leq j} (d_i-1)(d_j-1)$ nodes, provided either $c=2$ or $d_c>\sum_{i=1}^{c-1} d_i$ holds.
We study nodal complete intersection threefolds of type $(2,4)$ in $\PP^5$ which contain an Enriques surface in its Fano embedding. We completely determine Calabi-Yau birational models of a generic such threefold. These models have Hodge numbers $(h^{11},h^{12})=(2,32)$. We also describe Calabi-Yau varieties with Hodge numbers equal to $(2,26)$, $(23,5)$ and $(31,1)$. The last two pairs of Hodge numbers are, to the best of our knowledge, new.
We extend the known classification of threefolds of general type that are complete intersections to various classes of non-complete intersections, and find other classes of polarised varieties, including Calabi-Yau threefolds with canonical singularities, that are not complete intersections. Our methods apply more generally to construct orbifolds described by equations in given Gorenstein formats.
In this paper we derive a list of all the possible indecomposable normalized rank--two vector bundles without intermediate cohomology on the prime Fano threefolds and on the complete intersection Calabi Yau threefolds, say $V$, of Picard number $ρ=1$. For any such bundle $\E$, if it exists, we find the projective invariants of the curves $C \subset V$ which are the zero-locus of general global sections of $\E$. In turn, a curve $C \subset V$ with such invariants is a section of a bundle $\E$ from our lists. This way we reduce the problem for existence of such bundles on $V$ to the problem for …
We prove a relative Kawamata Viehweg vanishing type theorem for birational morphisms. We use this to prove a Grauert Riemenschneider theorem over log canonical threefolds without zero dimensional log canonical centers, in residue characteristic p greater than five. In large enough residue characteristics, we prove a Grauert Riemenschneider theorem over threefold log canonical singularities with standard coefficients. These vanishing theorems can also be used to study the depth of log canonical singularities at non log canonical centers, as well as the singularities of the log canonical centers…
Let X be a smooth projective threefold, and let A be an ample line bundle such that $K_X+A$ is nef. We show that if $K_X$ or $-K_X$ is pseudoeffective, the adjoint bundle $K_X+A$ has global sections. We also give a very short proof of the Beltrametti-Sommese conjecture in dimension three, recently proven by Fukuma: if A is an ample line bundle such that $K_X+2A$ is nef, the adjoint bundle $K_X+2A$ has global sections.
We give a bound on the minimal number of singularities of a nodal projective complete intersection threefold which contains a smooth complete intersection surface that is not a Cartier divisor.
This paper proves that the 5-canonical map of a smooth minimal 3-fold is birational when the geometric genus is bigger than 2. A combination of the results in this paper and that of Ein-Lazarsfeld-Lee, the possible exceptional cases are very limited. Unfortunately, no counter examples have been found up to now.
In this article, we summarize combinatorial description of complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds in Hibi toric varieties. Such Calabi-Yau threefolds have at worst conifold singularities, and are often smoothable to non-singular Calabi-Yau threefolds. We focus on such non-singular Calabi-Yau threefolds of Picard number one, and illustrate the calculation of topological invariants, using new motivating examples.
In this article, we study the possibility of producing a Calabi-Yau threefold in positive characteristic which is a counter-example to Kodaira vanishing. The only known method to construct the counter-example is so called inductive method such as the Raynaud-Mukai construction or Russel construction. We consider Mukai's method and its modification. Finally, as an application of Shepherd-Barron vanishing theorem of Fano threefolds, we compute $H^1(X, H^{-1})$ for any ample line bundle $H$ on a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ on which Kodaira vanishing fails.
We give two new examples of families of Calabi-Yau complete intersection threefolds whose generic element contains infinitely many lines. We get some results about the normal bundles of these lines and the Hilbert scheme of lines on the threefolds.
This paper has two aims. The former is to give an introduction to our earlier work on the Hodge theory of algebraic maps and more generally to some of the main themes of the theory of perverse sheaves and to some of its geometric applications. Particular emphasis is put on the topological properties of algebraic maps. The latter is to prove a motivic version of the decomposition theorem for the resolution of a threefold Y. This result allows to define a pure motive whose Betti realization is the intersection cohomology of Y. We provide a few explicit computations of perverse truncations and in…
We study the intersection of two copies of $\mathrm{Gr}(2,5)$ embedded in $\mathbf{P}^9$, and the intersection of the two projectively dual Grassmannians in the dual projective space. These intersections are deformation equivalent, derived equivalent Calabi-Yau threefolds. We prove that generically they are not birational. As a consequence, we obtain a counterexample to the birational Torelli problem for Calabi-Yau threefolds. We also show that these threefolds give a new pair of varieties whose classes in the Grothendieck ring of varieties are not equal, but whose difference is annihilated by…
The paper investigates the non-vanishing of $H^1(E(n))$, where $E$ is a (normalized) rank two vector bundle over any smooth irreducible threefold $X$ of degree $d$ such that $Pic(X) \cong \ZZ$. If $ε$ is the integer defined by the equality $ω_X = O_X(ε)$, and $α$ is the least integer $t$ such that $H^0(E(t)) \ne 0$, then, for a non-stable $E$ ($α\le 0$) the first cohomology module does not vanish at least between the endpoints $\frac{ε-c_1}{2}$ and $-α-c_1-1$. The paper also shows that there are other non-vanishing intervals, whose endpoints depend on $α$ and also on the second Chern class $c_…
In this paper, we prove a Clifford type inequality for the curve $X_{2,2,2,4}$, which is the intersection of a quartic and three general quadratics in $\mathbb{P}^5$. We thus prove a stronger Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality for characters of stable vector bundles and stable objects on $X_{2,4}$. Applying the scheme proposed by Bayer, Bertram, Macrì, Stellari and Toda, we can construct an open subset of Bridgeland stability conditions on $X_{2,4}$.
We consider Calabi-Yau threefolds $X$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ that are not liftable to characteristic $0$ or liftable ones with $p=2$. It is unknown whether Kodaira vanishing holds for these varieties. In this paper, we give a lower bound of $h^1(X, L^{-1})=\dim_k H^1(X, L^{-1})$ if $L$ is an ample divisor with $H^1(X, L^{-1})\ne{0}$. Moreover, we show that a Kodaira type vanishing holds if $X$ is a Schröer variety or a Schoen variety, which extends the similar result given in my previous paper for the Hirokado variety. We show that such kind of vanishing…
In this paper we study 14 families among 85 families of anticanonically embedded Q-Fano threefolds weighted complete intersections of codimension 2 and show that every quasismooth member is birationally birigid, that is, it is birational to another Q-Fano threefold but not birational to any other Mori fiber space.
In this paper, we establish a vanishing theorem of Nadel type for the Witt multiplier ideals on threefolds over perfect fields of characteristic larger than five. As an application, if a projective normal threefold over $\mathbb{F}_q$ is not klt and its canonical divisor is anti-ample, then the number of the rational points on the klt-locus is divisible by $q$.
We consider algebraic manifolds $Y$ of dimension 3 over $\Bbb{C}$ with $H^i(Y, Ω^j_Y)=0$ for all $j\geq 0$ and $i>0$. Let $X$ be a smooth completion of $Y$ with $D=X-Y$, an effective divisor on $X$ with normal crossings. If the $D$-dimension of $X$ is not zero, then $Y$ is a fibre space over a smooth affine curve $C$ (i.e., we have a surjective morphism from $Y$ to $C$ such that general fibre is smooth and irreducible) such that every fibre satisfies the same vanishing condition. If an irreducible smooth fibre is not affine, then the Kodaira dimension of $X$ is $-\infty$ and the $D$-dimension …
We prove that any arithmetically Gorenstein curve on a smooth, general hypersurface $X\subset \bbP^{4}$ of degree at least 6, is a complete intersection. This gives a characterisation of complete intersection curves on general type hypersurfaces in $\bbP^4$. We also verify that certain 1-cycles on a general quintic hypersurface are non-trivial elements of the Griffiths group.
Desingularized fiber products of semi-stable, non-isotrivial jacobian elliptic surfaces with vanishing third Betti number are classified. Such varieties may play a role in the study of supersingular threefolds, of the deformation theory of varieties with trivial canonical bundle, and of the arithmetic degenerations of rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds.
We use Batyrev-Borisov's formula for the generating function of stringy Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau varieties realized as complete intersections in toric varieties in order to get closed form expressions for Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau threefolds in five-dimensional ambient spaces. These expressions involve counts of lattice points on faces of associated Cayley polytopes. Using the same techniques, similar expressions may be obtained for higher dimensional varieties realized as complete intersections of two hypersurfaces.
Two conjectures relating the Kodaira dimension of a smooth projective variety and existence of number of nowhere vanishing 1-forms on the variety are proposed and verified in dimension 3.
Let $X^o=\mathbb P^3\setminus D$ where $D$ is the union of two quadrics such that their intersection contains a smooth conic, or the union of a smooth quadric surface and two planes, or the union of a smooth cubic surface $V$ and a plane $Π$ such that the intersection $V\capΠ$ contains a line. In all these cases we show that the set of integral points of $X^o$ is potentially dense. We apply the above results to prove that integral points are potentially dense in some log-Fano or in some log-Calabi-Yau threefold.
We investigate the existence of complete intersection threefolds $X \subset \mathbb{P}^n$ with only isolated, ordinary multiple points and we provide some sufficient conditions for their factoriality.
We prove that for smooth projective threefolds whose anticanonical divisors are nef, the second Chern classes are pseudo-effective under a weak assumption. As an application, the pseudo-effectivity of the second Chern classes implies that Kawamata's Effective Non-vanishing Conjecture holds for such threefolds.
We give a criterion for a continuous family of curves on a nodal $K$-trivial threefold $X_0$ to contribute geometrically rigid curves to a general smoothing of $X_0$. As an application, we prove the existence of geometrically rigid curves of arbitrary degree and explicitly bounded genus on general complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds.
In this paper, the numbers of rational curves on general complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds in complex projective spaces are computed up to degree six. The results are all in agreement with the predictions made from mirror symmetry.
We show the existence of smooth isolated curves of different degrees and genera in Calabi-Yau threefolds that are complete intersections in homogeneous spaces. Along the way, we classify all degrees and genera of smooth curves on BN general K3 surfaces of low genera. By results of Mukai, these are the K3 surfaces that can be realised as complete intersections in certain homogeneous spaces.
We analyze the structure of the algebraic manifolds $Y$ of dimension 3 with $H^i(Y, Ω^j_Y)=0$ for all $j\geq 0$, $i>0$ and $h^0(Y, {\mathcal{O}}_Y) > 1$, by showing the deformation invariant of some open surfaces. Secondly, we show when a smooth threefold with nonconstant regular functions satisfies the vanishing Hodge cohomology. As an application, we prove the existence of nonaffine and nonproduct threefolds $Y$ with this property by constructing a family of a certain type of open surfaces parametrized by the affine curve $\C-\{0\}$ such that the corresponding smooth completion $X$ has Kodai…
In this note we construct conifold transitions between several Calabi-Yau threefolds given by Pfaffians in weighted projective spaces and Calabi-Yau threefolds appearing as complete intersections in toric varieties. We use the obtained results to predict mirrors following ideas of \cite{BCKS, Batsmalltoricdegen}. In particular we consider the family of Calabi--Yau threefolds of degree 25 in $\mathbb{P}^9$ obtained as a transverse intersection of two Grassmannians in their Plucker embeddings.
We prove the factoriality of the following nodal threefolds: a complete intersection of hypersurfaces $F$ and $G\subset\mathbb{P}^{5}$ of degree $n$ and $k$ respectively, where $G$ is smooth, $|\mathrm{Sing}(F\cap G)|\leqslant(n+k-2)(n-1)/5$, $n\geqslant k$; a double cover of a smooth hypersurface $F\subset\mathbb{P}^{4}$ of degree $n$ branched over a surface that is cut out on $F$ by a hypersurface $G$ of degree $2r\geqslant n$, and $|\mathrm{Sing}(F\cap G)|\leqslant(2r+n-2)r/4$.
We study the geometry of a birational map between an intersection of a web of quadrics in seven-dimensional complex projective space that contains a plane and the double octic branched along the discriminant of the web.
