We determine the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of the projective product spaces introduced by D. Davis. We also obtained an upper bound for the topological complexity of these spaces, which improves the estimate given by J. González, M. Grant, E. Torres-Giese, and M. Xicoténcatl.
We define the projective stable category of a coherent scheme. It is the homotopy category of an abelian model structure on the category of unbounded chain complexes of quasi-coherent sheaves. We study the cofibrant objects of this model structure, which are certain complexes of flat quasi-coherent sheaves satisfying a special acyclicity condition.
Let $R$ be a ring and Ch($R$) the category of chain complexes of $R$-modules. We put an abelian model structure on Ch($R$) whose homotopy category is equivalent to $K(Proj)$, the homotopy category of all complexes of projectives. However, the cofibrant objects are not complexes of projectives, but rather all complexes of flat modules. The trivial objects are what Positselski calls contraacyclic complexes and so the homotopy category coincides with his contraderived category. We in fact construct this model on the category of chain complexes of quasi-coherent sheaves on any scheme $X$ admitting…
We construct and study projective and Reedy model category structures for bimodules and infinitesimal bimodules over topological operads. Both model structures produce the same homotopy categories. For the model categories in question, we build explicit cofibrant and fibrant replacements. We show that these categories are right proper and under some conditions left proper. We also study the extension/restriction adjunctions.
The Lusternik-Schnirelmann category $cat(X)$ is a homotopy invariant which is a numerical bound on the number of critical points of a smooth function on a manifold. Another similar invariant is the topological complexity $TC(X)$ (a la Farber) which has interesting applications in Robotics, specifically, in the robot motion planning problem. In this paper we calculate the Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and as a consequence we calculate the topological complexity of the two-point ordered configuration space of $\mathbb{CP}^n$ for every $n\geq 1$.
Variations on the notions of Reedy model structures and projective model structures on categories of diagrams in a model category are introduced. These allow one to choose only a subset of the entries when defining weak equivalences, or to use different model categories at different entries of the diagrams. As a result, a bisimplicial model category that can be used to recover the algebraic K-theory for any Waldhausen subcategory of a model category is produced.
In this paper, we continue the study of the category of functors Fquad, associated to F_2-vector spaces equipped with a nondegenerate quadratic form, initiated in two previous papers of the author. We define a filtration of the standard projective objects in Fquad; this refines to give a decomposition into indecomposable factors of the two first standard projective objects in Fquad. As an application of these two decompositions, we give a complete description of the polynomial functors of the category Fquad.
Let $R$ be any ring with identity. We show that the homotopy category of all acyclic chain complexes of pure-projective $R$-modules is a compactly generated triangulated category. We do this by constructing abelian model structures that put this homotopy category into a recollement with two other compactly generated triangulated categories: The usual derived category of $R$ and the pure derived category of $R$. This also gives a new model for the derived category.
We obtain an explicit formula for the best lower bound for the higher topological complexity, TC_k(P^n), of real projective space implied by mod 2 cohomology.
We use Brown-Peterson cohomology to obtain lower bounds for the higher topological complexity, TC_k(RP^n), of real projective spaces, which are often much stronger than those implied by ordinary mod-2 cohomology.
We show that the cyclic and epicyclic categories which play a key role in the encoding of cyclic homology and the lambda operations, are obtained from projective geometry in characteristic one over the infinite semifield F of "max-plus integers". Finite dimensional vector spaces are replaced by modules defined by restriction of scalars from the one-dimensional free module, using the Frobenius endomorphisms of F. The associated projective spaces are finite and provide a mathematically consistent interpretation of J. Tits' original idea of a geometry over the absolute point. The self-duality of …
An important example of a model category is the category of unbounded chain complexes of R-modules, which has as its homotopy category the derived category of the ring R. This example shows that traditional homological algebra is encompassed by Quillen's homotopical algebra. The goal of this paper is to show that more general forms of homological algebra also fit into Quillen's framework. Specifically, any set of objects in a complete and cocomplete abelian category A generates a projective class on A, which is exactly the information needed to do homological algebra in A. The main result is t…
We give a complete and careful proof of Quillen's theorem on the existence of the standard model category structure on the category of topological spaces. We do not assume any familiarity with model categories.
We prove that the projective model structure on the category of unbounded cochain complexes extends naturally to the category of contractions. The proof is completely elementary and we do not assume familiarity with model categories.
We study the behavior of the abstract sectional category in the Quillen, the Strom and the Mixed proper model structures on topological spaces and prove that, under certain reasonable conditions, all of them coincide with the classical notion. As a result, the same conclusions hold for the abstract Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and the abstract topological complexity of a space.
In this article, we construct a cofibrantly generated Quillen model structure on the category of small topological categories $\mathbf{Cat}_{\mathbf{Top}}$. It is Quillen equivalent to the Joyal model structure of $(\infty,1)$-categories and the Bergner model structure on $\mathbf{Cat}_{\mathbf{sSet}}$.
If a map $f$ has a homotopy retraction, then Doeraene and El Haouari conjectured that the sectional category and the relative category of $f$ are the same. In this work we discuss this conjecture for some lower bounds of these invariants. In particular, when we consider the diagonal map, we obtain results supporting Iwase-Sakai's conjecture which asserts that the topological complexity is the monoidal topological complexity.

For a triangulated category with products we develop a method for constructing a nice set of cogenerators, allowing us to prove a formal criterion in order to satisfy Brown representability for covariant functors. We apply this criterion for showing that both homotopy category of projective modules and homotopy category of projective objects in a category of functors from a small category to a module category satisfy this kind of representability. In particular, homotopy category of projective complexes satisfies Brown representability for covariant functors.
Using the machinery of weak fibration categories due to Schlank and the first author, we construct a convenient model structure on the pro-category of separable $C^*$-algebras $\mathrm{Pro}(\mathtt{SC^*})$. The opposite of this model category models the $\infty$-category of pointed noncommutative spaces $\mathtt{N}\mathcal{S_*}$ defined by the third author. Our model structure on $\mathrm{Pro}(\mathtt{SC^*})$ extends the well-known category of fibrant objects structure on $\mathtt{SC^*}$. We show that the pro-category $\mathrm{Pro}(\mathtt{SC^*})$ also contains, as a full coreflective subcateg…
The Lusternik-Schnirelmann category and topological complexity are important invariants of manifolds (and more generally, topological spaces). We study the behavior of these invariants under the operation of taking the connected sum of manifolds. We give a complete answer for the LS-categoryof orientable manifolds, $\cat(M\# N)=\max\{\cat M,\cat N\}$. For topological complexity we prove the inequality $\TC (M\# N)\ge\max\{\TC M,\TC N\}$ for simply connected manifolds.
In this work we shall introduce a new model structure on the category of pro-simplicial sheaves, which is very convenient for the study of étale homotopy. Using this model structure we define a pro-space associated to a topos, as a result of applying a derived functor. We show that our construction lifts Artin and Mazur's étale homotopy type [AM] in the relevant special case. Our definition extends naturally to a relative notion, namely, a pro-object associated to a map of topoi. This relative notion lifts the relative étale homotopy type that was used in [HaSc] for the study of obstructions t…
We use the homotopy invariance of equivariant principal bundles to prove that the equivariant ${\mathcal A}$-category of Clapp and Puppe is invariant under Morita equivalence. As a corollary, we obtain that both the equivariant Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of a group action and the invariant topological complexity are invariant under Morita equivalence. This allows a definition of topological complexity for orbifolds.
In this article the author endows the functor category [B(C2),Gpd] with the structure of a type-theoretic fibration category with a universe using the projective fibrations. It offers a new model of Martin-Löf type theory with dependent sums, dependent products, identity types and a universe. It turns out that this universe, the natural candidate that lifts the univalent universe of small discrete groupoids in the groupoid model of Hofmann and Streicher, is not univalent.
In this paper, we generalize the notion of Serre fibration to the Morita category of topological groupoids and derive the associated long exact sequence of homotopy groups. We use this results for calculation of homotopy groups of various groupoids, such as the foliation groupoid of a Riemannian foliation.
We show that the category of projective modules over a graded commutative ring admits a triangulation with respect to module suspension if and only if the ring is a finite product of graded fields and exterior algebras on one generator over a graded field (with a unit in the appropriate degree). We also classify the ungraded commutative rings for which the category of projective modules admits a triangulation with respect to the identity suspension. Applications to two analogues of the generating hypothesis in algebraic topology are given, and we translate our results into the setting of modul…
In this paper we establish a version of homological mirror symmetry for punctured Riemann surfaces. Following a proposal of Kontsevich we model A-branes on a punctured surface $Σ$ via the topological Fukaya category. We prove that the topological Fukaya category of $Σ$ is equivalent to the category of matrix factorizations of the mirror LG model $(X,W)$. Along the way we establish new gluing results for the topological Fukaya category of punctured surfaces which might be of independent interest.
In this article we study the subgroup of the Picard group of Voevodsky's category of geometric motives generated by the reduced motives of affine quadrics. Our main tools here are the functors of Bachmann, but we also provide an alternative method. We show that the group in question can be described in terms of indecomposable direct summands in the motives of projective quadrics. In particular, we describe all the relations among the reduced motives of affine quadrics. We also extend the Criterion of motivic equivalence of projective quadrics.
