We study four types of (co)cartesian fibrations of $\infty$-bicategories over a given base $\mathcal{B}$, and prove that they encode the four variance flavors of $\mathcal{B}$-indexed diagrams of $\infty$-categories. We then use this machinery to set up a general theory of 2-(co)limits for diagrams valued in an $\infty$-bicategory, capable of expressing lax, weighted and pseudo limits. When the $\infty$-bicategory at hand arises from a model category tensored over marked simplicial sets, we show that this notion of 2-(co)limit can be calculated as a suitable form of a weighted homotopy limit on the model categorical level, thus showing in particular the existence of these 2-(co)limits in a wide range of examples. We finish by discussing a notion of cofinality appropriate to this setting and use it to deduce the unicity of 2-(co)limits, once exist.
We define and discuss lax and weighted colimits of diagrams in $\infty$-categories and show that the coCartesian fibration associated to a functor is given by its lax colimit. A key ingredient, of independent interest, is a simple characterization of the free Cartesian fibration associated to a a functor of $\infty$-categories. As an application of these results, we prove that lax representable functors are preserved under exponentiation, and also that the total space of a presentable Cartesian fibration between $\infty$-categories is presentable, generalizing a theorem of Makkai and Paré to t…
We use fibrations of complete Segal spaces to construct four complete Segal spaces: Reedy fibrant simplicial spaces, Segal spaces, complete Segal spaces, and spaces. Moreover, we show each one comes with a universal fibration that classifies Reedy left fibrations, Segal coCartesian fibrations, coCartesian fibrations and left fibrations and prove these are representable fibrations. Finally, we use equivalences between quasi-categories and complete Segal spaces to present analogous constructions using fibrations of quasi-categories.
The goal of this paper is to prove an equivalence between the $(\infty,2)$-category of cartesian factorization systems of $\infty$-categories and that of pointed cartesian fibrations of $\infty$-categories. This generalizes a similar result known for ordinary categories and sheds some light on the interplay between these two seemingly distant concepts.
We construct a flagged $\infty$-category ${\sf Corr}$ of $\infty$-categories and bimodules among them. We prove that ${\sf Corr}$ classifies exponentiable fibrations. This representability of exponentiable fibrations extends that established by Lurie of both coCartesian fibrations and Cartesian fibrations, as they are classified by the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-categories and its opposite, respectively. We introduce the flagged $\infty$-subcategories ${\sf LCorr}$ and ${\sf RCorr}$ of ${\sf Corr}$, whose morphisms are those bimodules which are \emph{left final} and \emph{right initial}, re…
We use the basic expected properties of the Gray tensor product of $(\infty,2)$-categories to study (co)lax natural transformations. Using results of Riehl-Verity and Zaganidis we identify lax transformations between adjunctions and monads with commutative squares of (monadic) right adjoints. We also identify the colax transformations whose components are equivalences (generalizing the "icons" of Lack) with the 2-morphisms that arise from viewing $(\infty,2)$-categories as simplicial $\infty$-categories. Using this characterization we identify the $\infty$-category of monads on a fixed object …
A relative category is a category with a chosen class of weak equivalences. Barwick and Kan produced a model structure on the category of all relative categories, which is Quillen equivalent to the Joyal model structure on simplicial sets and the Rezk model structure on simplicial spaces. We will prove that the underlying relative category of a model category or even a fibration category is fibrant in the Barwick--Kan model structure.
Motivated by the challenge of defining twisted quantum field theories in the context of higher categories, we develop a general framework for lax and oplax transformations and their higher analogs between strong $(\infty, n)$-functors. We construct a double $(\infty,n)$-category built out of the target $(\infty, n)$-category governing the desired diagrammatics. We define (op)lax transformations as functors into parts thereof, and an (op)lax twisted field theory to be a symmetric monoidal (op)lax natural transformation between field theories. We verify that lax trivially-twisted relative field …
We introduce a new type of weakly enriched categories over a given symmetric monoidal model category M; these are called Co-Segal categories. Their definition derives from the philosophy of classical (enriched) Segal categories. We study their homotopy theory by giving a model structure on them. One of the motivations of introducing these structure was to have an alternative definition of higher linear categories following Segal-like methods.
We decribe the correspondence between normalised $ω$-operads and certain lax monoidal structures on the category of globular sets. As with ordinary monoidal categories, one has a notion of category enriched in a lax monoidal category. Within the aforementioned correspondence, we provide also an equivalence between the algebras of a given normalised $ω$-operad, and categories enriched in globular sets for the induced lax monoidal structure.
In this paper, we define a generalization of indexed categories and contextual categories which we call contextually indexed (contextual) categories. While contextual categories are models of ordinary type theories, contextually indexed (contextual) categories are models of indexed type theories. We also define type-theoretic semi-fibration categories which generalize type-theoretic fibration categories. Every model category in which cofibrations are stable under pullbacks is a type-theoretic semi-fibration category. We show that type-theoretic semi-fibration category gives rise to a contextua…
This work contributes to clarifying several relationships between certain higher categorical structures and the homotopy type of their classifying spaces. Bicategories (in particular monoidal categories) have well understood simple geometric realizations, and we here deal with homotopy types represented by lax diagrams of bicategories, that is, lax functors to the tricategory of bicategories. In this paper, it is proven that, when a certain bicategorical Grothendieck construction is performed on a lax diagram of bicategories, then the classifying space of the resulting bicategory can be though…
We give a definition of the Gray tensor product in the setting of scaled simplicial sets which is associative and forms a left Quillen bifunctor with respect to the bicategorical model category of Lurie. We then introduce a notion of oplax functor in this setting, and use it in order to characterize the Gray tensor product by means of a universal property. A similar characterization was used by Gaitsgory and Rozenblyum in their definition of the Gray product, thus giving a promising lead for comparing the two settings.
For a diagram of simplicial combinatorial model categories, we show that the associated lax limit, endowed with the projective model structure, is a presentation of the lax limit of the underlying $\infty$-categories. Our approach can also allow for the indexing category to be simplicial, as long as the diagram factors through its homotopy category. Analogous results for the associated homotopy limit (and other intermediate limits) directly follow.
The main objective of this paper is to show that the homotopy colimit of a diagram of quasi-categories and indexed by a small category is a localization of Lurie's higher Grothendieck construction of the diagram. We thereby generalize Thomason's classical result which states that the homotopy colimit of a diagram of categories has the homotopy type of (the classifying space of) the Grothendieck construction of the diagram of categories.
We define a natural 2-categorical structure on the base category of a large class of Grothendieck fibrations. Given any model category $\mathbf{C}$, we apply this construction to a fibration whose fibers are the homotopy categories of the slice categories $\mathbf{C}/A$, and we show that in the case $\mathbf{C}=\mathbf{Top}$, our construction applied to this fibration recovers the usual 2-category of spaces.
Cartesian fibrations were originally defined by Lurie in the context of quasi-categories and are commonly used in $(\infty,1)$-category theory to study presheaves valued in $(\infty,1)$-categories. In this work we define and study fibrations modeling presheaves valued in simplicial spaces and their localizations. This includes defining a model structure for these fibrations and giving effective tools to recognize its fibrations and weak equivalences. This in particular gives us a new method to construct Cartesian fibrations via complete Segal spaces. In addition to that, it allows us to define…
We define and study cartesian and cocartesian fibrations between categories internal to an $\infty$-topos and prove a straightening equivalence in this context.
We use the terms $\infty$-categories and $\infty$-functors to mean the objects and morphisms in an $\infty$-cosmos: a simplicially enriched category satisfying a few axioms, reminiscent of an enriched category of fibrant objects. Quasi-categories, Segal categories, complete Segal spaces, marked simplicial sets, iterated complete Segal spaces, $θ_n$-spaces, and fibered versions of each of these are all $\infty$-categories in this sense. Previous work in this series shows that the basic category theory of $\infty$-categories and $\infty$-functors can be developed only in reference to the axioms …
We develop a basic theory of cocartesian fibrations between Segal spaces (in line with that of arxiv:2102.05190), and use it to provide a proof of a theorem of Barwick (the main result of arxiv:1404.0108). Note: This work was originally the author's master's thesis, submitted 21.09.2020.
We formulate a model-independent theory of co/cartesian morphisms and co/cartesian fibrations: that is, one which resides entirely *within the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-categories*. We prove this is suitably compatible with the corresponding quasicategorical (and in particular, model-dependent) notions studied by Joyal and Lurie.
In this paper, we study h-fibrations, a weak homotopical version of fibrations which have weak covering homotopy property. We present some homotopical analogue of the notions related to fibrations and characterize h-fibrations using them. Then we construct some new categories by h-fibrations and deduce some results in these categories such as the existence of products and coproducts.
We construct an $(\infty,2)$-version of the (lax) Gray tensor product. On the 1-categorical level, this is a binary (or more generally an $n$-ary) functor on the category of $Θ_2$-sets, and it is shown to be left Quillen with respect to Ara's model structure. Moreover we prove that this tensor product forms part of a "homotopical" (biclosed) monoidal structure, or more precisely a normal lax monoidal structure that is associative up to homotopy.

In this paper, we provide a notion of $\infty$-bicategories fibred in $\infty$-bicategories which we call 2-Cartesian fibrations. Our definition is formulated using the language of marked biscaled simplicial sets: Those are scaled simplicial sets equipped with an additional collection of triangles containing the scaled 2-simplices, which we call lean triangles, in addition to a collection of edges containing all degenerate 1-simplices. We prove the existence of a left proper combinatorial simplicial model category whose fibrant objects are precisely the 2-Cartesian fibrations over a chosen sca…
Many examples of obstruction theory can be formulated as the study of when a lift exists in a commutative square. Typically, one of the maps is a cofibration of some sort and the opposite map is a fibration, and there is a functorial obstruction class that determines whether a lift exists. Working in an arbitrary pointed proper model category, we classify the cofibrations that have such an obstruction theory with respect to all fibrations. Up to weak equivalence, retract, and cobase change, they are the cofibrations with weakly contractible target. Equivalently, they are the retracts of princi…
The Grothendieck construction is a classical correspondence between diagrams of categories and coCartesian fibrations over the indexing category. In this paper we consider the analogous correspondence in the setting of model categories. As a main result, we establish an equivalence between suitable diagrams of model categories indexed by $\mathcal{M}$ and a new notion of \textbf{model fibrations} over $\mathcal{M}$. When $\mathcal{M}$ is a model category, our construction endows the Grothendieck construction with a model structure which gives a presentation of Lurie's $\infty$-categorical Grot…
In this article we extend the theory of lax monoidal structures, also known as multitensors, and the monads on categories of enriched graphs that they give rise to. Our first principal result -- the lifting theorem for multitensors -- enables us to see the Gray tensor product of 2-categories and the Crans tensor product of Gray categories as part of this framework. We define weak n-categories with strict units by means of a notion of reduced higher operad, using the theory of algebraic weak factorisation systems. Our second principal result is to establish a lax tensor product on the category …
We show that homotopy pullbacks of sheaves of simplicial sets over a Grothendieck topology distribute over homotopy colimits; this generalizes a result of Puppe about topological spaces. In addition, we show that inverse image functors between categories of simplicial sheaves preserve homotopy pullback squares. The method we use introduces the notion of a sharp map, which is analogous to the notion of a quasi-fibration of spaces, and seems to be of independent interest.
In a recent paper we introduced a much weaker and easy to verify structure than a model category, which we called a "weak fibration category". We further showed that a small weak fibration category can be "completed" into a full model category structure on its pro-category, provided the pro-category satisfies a certain two out of three property. In the present paper we give sufficient intrinsic conditions on a weak fibration category for this two out of three property to hold. We apply these results to prove theorems giving sufficient conditions for the finite accessibility of the category of …
We develop a notion of an algebra over an infinity-operad with values in infinity-categories which is completely intrinsic to the formalism of dendroidal sets. Its definition involves the notion of a coCartesian fibration of dendroidal sets and extends Lurie's definition of a coCartesian fibration of simplicial sets. We show how, for a dendroidal set X, the coCartesian fibrations over X fit together to form an infinity-category coCart(X). Using a generalization of the Grothendieck construction, we prove that coCart(X) is equivalent to the infinity-category of algebras in infinity-categories ov…
In this short note we prove that two definitions of (co)ends in $\infty$-categories, via twisted arrow $\infty$-categories and via $\infty$-categories of simplices, are equivalent. We also show that weighted (co)limits, which can be defined as certain (co)ends, can alternatively be described as (co)limits over left and right fibrations, respectively.
We show that the conditions in Steimle's 'additivity theorem for cobordism categories' can be weakened to only require \emph{locally} (co)Cartesian fibrations, making it applicable to a larger class of functors. As an application we compute the difference in classifying spaces between the infinity category of cospans of finite sets and its homotopy category.
The aim of this paper is to generalize Grothendieck's theory of smooth functors in order to include within this framework the theory of fibered categories. We obtain in particular a new characterization of fibered categories.
We generalize Quillen's Theorem A to diagrams of lax 2-functors which commute up to transformation. It follows from a special case of this result that 2-categories are models for homotopy types.
The familiar construction of categories of fractions, due to Gabriel and Zisman, allows one to invert a class W of arrows in a category in a universal way. Similarly, bicategories of fractions allow one to invert a collection of arrows in a bicategory. In this case the arrows are inverted in the sense that they are made into equivalences. As with categories of fractions, bicategories of fractions suffer from the defect that they need not be locally small even when the bicategory in which W lives is locally small. Similarly, in the case where W is a class of arrows in a 2-category, the bicatego…
