We investigate percolation in the Boolean model with convex grains in high dimension. For each dimension d, one fixes a compact, convex and symmetric set K $\subset$ R d with non empty interior. In a first setting, the Boolean model is a reunion of translates of K. In a second setting, the Boolean model is a reunion of translates of K or $ρ$K for a further parameter $ρ$ $\in$ (1, 2). We give the asymptotic behavior of the percolation probability and of the percolation threshold in the two settings.
We consider percolation in a multiscale Boolean model. This model is defined as the union of scaled independent copies of a given Boolean model. The scale factor of the $n^{\textrm{th}}$ copy is $ρ^{-n}$. We prove, under optimal integrability assumptions, that no percolation occurs in the multiscale Boolean model for large enough $ρ$ if the rate of the Boolean model is below some critical value.
We consider a multiscale Boolean percolation on $\mathbb R^d$ with radius distribution $μ$ on $[1,+\infty)$, $d\ge 2$. The model is defined by superposing the original Boolean percolation model with radius distribution $μ$ with a countable number of scaled independent copies. The $n$-th copy is a Boolean percolation with radius distribution $μ|_{[1,κ]}$ rescaled by $κ^{n}$. We prove that under some regularity assumption on $μ$, the subcritical phase of the multiscale model is sharp for $κ$ large enough. Moreover, we prove that the existence of an unbounded connected component depends only on t…
We consider the discrete Boolean model of percolation on graphs satisfying a doubling metric condition. We study sufficient conditions on the distribution of the radii of balls placed at the points of a Bernoulli point process for the absence of percolation, provided that the retention parameter of the underlying point process is small enough. We exhibit three families of interesting graphs where the main result of this work holds. Finally, we give sufficient conditions for ergodicity of the discrete Boolean model of percolation.
We consider the Bernoulli Boolean discrete percolation model on the d-dimensional integer lattice. We study sufficient conditions on the distribution of the radii of balls placed at the points of a Bernoulli point process for the absence of percolation, provided that the intensity of the underlying point process is small enough. We also study a Harris graphical procedure to construct, forward in time, particle systems with interactions of infinite range under the assumption that the corresponding generator admits a Kalikow-type decomposition. We do so by using the subcriticality of the boolean…
In this work we study the Poisson Boolean model of percolation in locally compact Polish metric spaces and we prove the invariance of subcritical and supercritical phases under mm-quasi-isometries. In other words, we prove that if the Poisson Boolean model of percolation is subcritical or supercritical (or exhibits phase transition) in a metric space M which is mm-quasi-isometric to a metric space N, then these phases also exist for the Poisson Boolean model of percolation in N. Then we apply these results to understand the phenomenon of phase transition in a large family of metric spaces. Ind…
It is well known that there are two regimes in a standard one-dimensional Boolean percolation model: either the entire space is covered a.s., or the covered volume fraction is strictly less than one. The aim of this work is to demonstrate that there is a third possibility in a Boolean model with totally asymmetric grains on a half-line: a.s. there is no unbounded component, but the covered volume fraction is one. An explicit condition is given characterizing the existence of an unbounded occupied component.
We consider the Boolean model with random radii based on Cox point processes. Under a condition of stabilization for the random environment, we establish existence and non-existence of subcritical regimes for the size of the cluster at the origin in terms of volume, diameter and number of points. Further, we prove uniqueness of the infinite cluster for sufficiently connected environments.
We consider Poisson Boolean percolation on $\mathbb R^d$ with power-law distribution on the radius with a finite $d$-moment for $d\ge 2$. We prove that subcritical sharpness occurs for all but a countable number of power-law distributions. This extends the results of Duminil-Copin--Raoufi--Tassion where subcritical sharpness is proved under the assumption that the radii distribution has a $5d-3$ finite moment. Our proofs techniques are different from their paper: we do not use randomized algorithm and rely on specific independence properties of Boolean percolation, inherited from the underlyin…
We consider the Poisson Boolean model of continuum percolation. We show that there is a subcritical phase if and only if $E(R^d)$ is finite, where $R$ denotes the radius of the balls around Poisson points and $d$ denotes the dimension. We also give related results concerning the integrability of the diameter of subcritical clusters.
We establish the mean-field bounds $γ\ge 1$, $δ\ge 2$ and $\triangle \ge 2$ on the critical exponents of the Poisson-Boolean continuum percolation model under a moment condition on the radii; these were previously known only in the special case of fixed radii (in the case of $γ$), or not at all (in the case of $δ$ and $\triangle$). We deduce these as consequences of the mean-field bound $β\le 1$, recently established by Duminil-Copin, Raoufi and Tassion under the same moment condition, using a relative entropy method introduced by the authors in previous work.
We consider the Poisson Boolean percolation model in $\mathbb{R}^2$, where the radii of each ball is independently chosen according to some probability measure with finite second moment. For this model, we show that the two thresholds, for the existence of an unbounded occupied and an unbounded vacant component, coincide. This complements a recent study of the sharpness of the phase transition in Poisson Boolean percolation by the same authors. As a corollary it follows that for Poisson Boolean percolation in $\mathbb{R}^d$, for any $d\ge2$, finite moment of order $d$ is both necessary and suf…
We consider the Boolean model on $\R^d$. We prove some equivalences between subcritical percolation properties. Let us introduce some notations to state one of these equivalences. Let $C$ denote the connected component of the origin in the Boolean model. Let $|C|$ denotes its volume. Let $\ell$ denote the maximal length of a chain of random balls from the origin. Under optimal integrability conditions on the radii, we prove that $E(|C|)$ is finite if and only if there exists $A,B >0$ such that $¶(\ell \ge n) \le Ae^{-Bn}$ for all $n \ge 1$.
We consider a non trivial Boolean model $Σ$ on ${\mathbb R}^d$ for $d\geq 2$. For every $x,y \in {\mathbb R}^d$ we define $T(x,y)$ as the minimum time needed to travel from $x$ to $y$ by a traveler that walks at speed $1$ outside $Σ$ and at infinite speed inside $Σ$. By a standard application of Kingman sub-additive theorem, one easily shows that $T(0,x)$ behaves like $μ\|x\|$ when $\|x\|$ goes to infinity, where $μ$ is a constant named the time constant in classical first passage percolation. In this paper we investigate the positivity of $μ$. More precisely, under an almost optimal moment as…
Recently the study of noise sensitivity and noise stability of Boolean functions has received considerable attention. The purpose of this paper is to extend these notions in a natural way to a different class of perturbations, namely those arising from running the symmetric exclusion process for a short amount of time. In this study, the case of monotone Boolean functions will turn out to be of particular interest. We show that for this class of functions, ordinary noise sensitivity and noise sensitivity with respect to the complete graph exclusion process are equivalent. We also show this equ…
Disagreement percolation connects a Gibbs lattice gas and i.i.d. site percolation on the same lattice such that non-percolation implies uniqueness of the Gibbs measure. This work generalises disagreement percolation to the hard-sphere model and the Boolean model. Non-percolation of the Boolean model implies the uniqueness of the Gibbs measure and exponential decay of pair correlations and finite volume errors. Hence, lower bounds on the critical intensity for percolation of the Boolean model imply lower bounds on the critical activity for a (potential) phase transition. These lower bounds impr…

We consider percolation properties of the Boolean model generated by a Gibbs point process and balls with deterministic radius. We show that for a large class of Gibbs point processes there exists a critical activity, such that percolation occurs a.s. above criticality. For locally stable Gibbs point processes we show a converse result, i.e. they do not percolate a.s. at low activity.
We prove that the Poisson-Boolean percolation on $\mathbb{R}^d$ undergoes a sharp phase transition in any dimension under the assumption that the radius distribution has a $5d-3$ finite moment (in particular we do not assume that the distribution is bounded). More precisely, we prove that: -In the whole subcritical regime, the expected size of the cluster of the origin is finite, and furthermore we obtain bounds for the origin to be connected to distance $n$: when the radius distribution has a finite exponential moment, the probability decays exponentially fast in $n$, and when the radius dist…
For a given dimension d $\ge$ 2 and a finite measure $ν$ on (0, +$\infty$), we consider $ξ$ a Poisson point process on R d x (0, +$\infty$) with intensity measure dc $\otimes$ $ν$ where dc denotes the Lebesgue measure on R d. We consider the Boolean model $Σ$ = $\cup$ (c,r)$\in$$ξ$ B(c, r) where B(c, r) denotes the open ball centered at c with radius r. For every x, y $\in$ R d we define T (x, y) as the minimum time needed to travel from x to y by a traveler that walks at speed 1 outside $Σ$ and at infinite speed inside $Σ$. By a standard application of Kingman sub-additive theorem, one easily…
The mean density of a random closed set $Θ$ in $\R^d$ with Hausdorff dimension $n$ is the Radon-Nikodym derivative of the expected measure $\E[\h^n(Θ\cap\cdot)]$ induced by $Θ$ with respect to the usual $d$-dimensional Lebesgue measure. We consider here inhomogeneous Boolean models with lower dimensional typical grain. Under general regularity assumptions on the typical grain, related to the existence of its Minkowski content, and on the intensity measure of the underlying Poisson point process, we prove an explicit formula for the mean density. The proof of such formula provides as by-product…
We consider the Poisson Boolean continuum percolation model in n-dimensional hyperbolic space. In 2 dimensions we show that there are intensities for the underlying Poisson process for which there are infinitely unbounded components in the covered and vacant regions. In n dimensions we show that if the radius of the balls are big enough, then there are intensities for the underlying Poisson process for which there are infinitely many unbounded components.
The continuum percolation for Markov (or Gibbs) germ-grain models is investigated. The grains are assumed circular with random radii on a compact support. The morphological interaction is the so-called Quermass interaction defined by a linear combination of the classical Minkowski functionals (area, perimeter and Euler-Poincaré characteristic). We show that the percolation occurs for any coefficient of this linear combination and for a large enough activity parameter. An application to the phase transition of the multi-type Quermass model is given.
Consider a Boolean model $Σ$ in $\R^d$. The centers are given by a homogeneous Poisson point process with intensity $λ$ and the radii of distinct balls are i.i.d.\ with common distribution $ν$. The critical covered volume is the proportion of space covered by $Σ$ when the intensity $λ$ is critical for percolation. Previous numerical simulations and heuristic arguments suggest that the critical covered volume may be minimal when $ν$ is a Dirac measure. In this paper, we prove that it is not the case in sufficiently high dimension.
We investigate the existence and first percolation properties of general stopped germ-grain models. They are defined via a random set of germs generated by a homogeneous planar Poisson point process in $\mathbf{R}^{2}$. From each germ, a grain, composed by a random number of branches, grows. This grain stops to grow whenever one of its branches hits another grain. The classical and historical example is the line segment model for which the grains are segments growing in a random direction in $ [0,2π)$ with random velocity. In the bilateral line segment model the segments grow in both direction…
In this paper, we prove that it is not the case at least in high dimension. To establish this result we study the asymptotic behaviour, as $d$ t…
Let $\mathcal{H}$ denote a collection of subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$, and assign independent random variables uniformly distributed over $[0,1]$ to the $n$ elements. Declare an element $p$-present if its corresponding value is at most $p$. In this paper, we quantify how much the observation of the $r$-present ($r>p$) set of elements affects the probability that the set of $p$-present elements is contained in $\mathcal{H}$. In the context of percolation, we find that this question is closely linked to the near-critical regime. As a consequence, we show that for every $r>1/2$, bond percolation…
It is shown that a large class of events in a product probability space are highly sensitive to noise, in the sense that with high probability, the configuration with an arbitrary small percent of random errors gives almost no prediction whether the event occurs. On the other hand, weighted majority functions are shown to be noise-stable. Several necessary and sufficient conditions for noise sensitivity and stability are given. Consider, for example, bond percolation on an $n+1$ by $n$ grid. A configuration is a function that assigns to every edge the value 0 or 1. Let $ω$ be a random configur…
Proofs of sharp phase transition and noise sensitivity in percolation have been significantly simplified by the use of randomized algorithms, via the OSSS inequality (proved by O'Donnell, Saks, Schramm and Servedio (2005)) and the Schramm-Steif inequality for the Fourier-Walsh coefficients of functions defined on the Boolean hypercube. In this article, we prove intrinsic versions of the OSSS and Schramm-Steif inequalities for functionals of a general Poisson process, and apply these new estimates to deduce sufficient conditions - expressed in terms of randomized stopping sets - yielding sharp …
We consider the Boolean model $Z$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ with random compact grains, i.e. $Z := \bigcup_{i \in \mathbb{N}} (X_i + Z_i)$ where $η_t := \{X_1, X_2, \dots\}$ is a Poisson point process of intensity $t$ and $(Z_1, Z_2, \dots)$ is an i.i.d. sequence of compact grains (not necessarily balls). We will show, that the volume and diameter of the cluster of a typical grain in $Z$ have an exponential tail if the diameter of the typical grain is a.s. bounded by some constant. To achieve this we adapt the arguments of \cite{duminil2015newproof} and apply a new construction of the cluster of the t…
Consider a family of Boolean models, indexed by integers $n \ge 1$, where the $n$-th model features a Poisson point process in ${\mathbb{R}}^n$ of intensity $e^{n ρ_n}$ with $ρ_n \to ρ$ as $n \to \infty$, and balls of independent and identically distributed radii distributed like $\bar X_n \sqrt{n}$, with $\bar X_n$ satisfying a large deviations principle. It is shown that there exist three deterministic thresholds: $τ_d$ the degree threshold; $τ_p$ the percolation threshold; and $τ_v$ the volume fraction threshold; such that asymptotically as $n$ tends to infinity, in a sense made precise in …
In this paper we study noise sensitivity and threshold phenomena for Poisson Voronoi percolation on $\mathbb{R}^2$. In the setting of Boolean functions, both threshold phenomena and noise sensitivity can be understood via the study of randomized algorithms. Together with a simple discretization argument, such techniques apply also to the continuum setting. Via the study of a suitable algorithm we show that box-crossing events in Voronoi percolation are noise sensitive and present a threshold phenomenon with polynomial window. We also study the effect of other kinds of perturbations, and emphas…

Partially motivated by the desire to better understand the connectivity phase transition in fractal percolation, we introduce and study a class of continuum fractal percolation models in dimension d greater than or equal to 2. These include a scale invariant version of the classical (Poisson) Boolean model of stochastic geometry and (for d=2) the Brownian loop soup introduced by Lawler and Werner. The models lead to random fractal sets whose connectivity properties depend on a parameter lambda. In this paper we mainly study the transition between a phase where the random fractal sets are total…
Let Z be a so-called well-behaved percolation, i.e. a certain random closed set in the hyperbolic plane, whose law is invariant under all isometries; for example the covered region in a Poisson Boolean model. The Hausdorff-dimension of the set of directions is determined in terms of the $α$-value of Z in which visibility from a fixed point to the ideal boundary of the hyperbolic plane is possible within Z. Moreover, the Hausdorff-dimension of the set of (hyperbolic) lines through a fixed point contained in Z is calculated. Thereby several conjectures raised by Benjamini, Jonasson, Schramm and …
