Consider a Boolean model $Σ$ in $\R^d$. The centers are given by a homogeneous Poisson point process with intensity $λ$ and the radii of distinct balls are i.i.d.\ with common distribution $ν$. The critical covered volume is the proportion of space covered by $Σ$ when the intensity $λ$ is critical for percolation. Previous numerical simulations and heuristic arguments suggest that the critical covered volume may be minimal when $ν$ is a Dirac measure. In this paper, we prove that it is not the case in sufficiently high dimension.
We study the critical case of first-passage percolation in two dimensions. Letting $(t_e)$ be i.i.d. nonnegative weights assigned to the edges of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with $\mathbb{P}(t_e=0)=1/2$, consider the induced pseudometric (passage time) $T(x,y)$ for vertices $x,y$. It was shown in [2] that the growth of the sequence $\mathbb{E}T(0,\partial B(n))$ (where $B(n) = [-n,n]^2$) has the same order (up to a constant factor) as the sequence $\mathbb{E}T^{\text{inv}}(0,\partial B(n))$. This second passage time is the minimal total weight of any path from 0 to $\partial B(n)$ that resides in a certain…
We study a random growth model on $\R^d$ introduced by Deijfen. This is a continuous first-passage percolation model. The growth occurs by means of spherical outbursts with random radii in the infected region. We aim at finding conditions on the distribution of the random radii to determine whether the growth of the process is linear or not. To do so, we compare this model with a continuous analogue of the greedy lattice paths model and transpose results in the lattice setting to the continuous setting.
We establish the mean-field bounds $γ\ge 1$, $δ\ge 2$ and $\triangle \ge 2$ on the critical exponents of the Poisson-Boolean continuum percolation model under a moment condition on the radii; these were previously known only in the special case of fixed radii (in the case of $γ$), or not at all (in the case of $δ$ and $\triangle$). We deduce these as consequences of the mean-field bound $β\le 1$, recently established by Duminil-Copin, Raoufi and Tassion under the same moment condition, using a relative entropy method introduced by the authors in previous work.
The continuum random cluster model is a Gibbs modification of the standard boolean model of intensity $z > 0$ and law of radii $Q$. The formal unormalized density is given by $q^{N_{cc}}$ where $q$ is a fixed parameter and $N_{cc}$ is the number of connected components in the random structure. We prove for a large class of parameters that percolation occurs for $z$ large enough and does not occur for $z$ small enough. An application to the phase transition of the Widom-Rowlinson model with random radii is given. Our main tools are stochastic domination properties, a fine study of the interacti…

In this paper, we prove that it is not the case at least in high dimension. To establish this result we study the asymptotic behaviour, as $d$ t…
We study the phase transition of random radii Poisson Boolean percolation: Around each point of a planar Poisson point process, we draw a disc of random radius, independently for each point. The behavior of this process is well understood when the radii are uniformly bounded from above. In this article, we investigate this process for unbounded (and possibly heavy tailed) radii distributions. Under mild assumptions on the radius distribution, we show that both the vacant and occupied sets undergo a phase transition at the same critical parameter $λ_c$. Moreover, - For $λ< λ_c$, the vacant set …
The continuum percolation for Markov (or Gibbs) germ-grain models is investigated. The grains are assumed circular with random radii on a compact support. The morphological interaction is the so-called Quermass interaction defined by a linear combination of the classical Minkowski functionals (area, perimeter and Euler-Poincaré characteristic). We show that the percolation occurs for any coefficient of this linear combination and for a large enough activity parameter. An application to the phase transition of the multi-type Quermass model is given.
We consider the discrete Boolean model of percolation on graphs satisfying a doubling metric condition. We study sufficient conditions on the distribution of the radii of balls placed at the points of a Bernoulli point process for the absence of percolation, provided that the retention parameter of the underlying point process is small enough. We exhibit three families of interesting graphs where the main result of this work holds. Finally, we give sufficient conditions for ergodicity of the discrete Boolean model of percolation.
We consider the Bernoulli Boolean discrete percolation model on the d-dimensional integer lattice. We study sufficient conditions on the distribution of the radii of balls placed at the points of a Bernoulli point process for the absence of percolation, provided that the intensity of the underlying point process is small enough. We also study a Harris graphical procedure to construct, forward in time, particle systems with interactions of infinite range under the assumption that the corresponding generator admits a Kalikow-type decomposition. We do so by using the subcriticality of the boolean…
We consider the Boolean model with random radii based on Cox point processes. Under a condition of stabilization for the random environment, we establish existence and non-existence of subcritical regimes for the size of the cluster at the origin in terms of volume, diameter and number of points. Further, we prove uniqueness of the infinite cluster for sufficiently connected environments.
We consider the Poisson Boolean percolation model in $\mathbb{R}^2$, where the radii of each ball is independently chosen according to some probability measure with finite second moment. For this model, we show that the two thresholds, for the existence of an unbounded occupied and an unbounded vacant component, coincide. This complements a recent study of the sharpness of the phase transition in Poisson Boolean percolation by the same authors. As a corollary it follows that for Poisson Boolean percolation in $\mathbb{R}^d$, for any $d\ge2$, finite moment of order $d$ is both necessary and suf…
We consider the Boolean model on $\R^d$. We prove some equivalences between subcritical percolation properties. Let us introduce some notations to state one of these equivalences. Let $C$ denote the connected component of the origin in the Boolean model. Let $|C|$ denotes its volume. Let $\ell$ denote the maximal length of a chain of random balls from the origin. Under optimal integrability conditions on the radii, we prove that $E(|C|)$ is finite if and only if there exists $A,B >0$ such that $¶(\ell \ge n) \le Ae^{-Bn}$ for all $n \ge 1$.
Consider a bipartite random geometric graph on the union of two independent homogeneous Poisson point processes in $d$-space, with distance parameter $r$ and intensities $λ,μ$. For any $λ>0$ we consider the percolation threshold $μ_c(λ)$ associated to the parameter $μ$. Denoting by $λ_c:= λ_c(2r)$ the percolation threshold for the standard Poisson Boolean model with radii $r$, we show the lower bound $μ_c(λ)\ge c\log(c/(λ-λ_c))$ for any $λ>λ_c$ with $c>0$ a fixed constant. In particular, $μ_c(λ)$ tends to infinity when $λ$ tends to $λ_c$ from above.
We consider Poisson Boolean percolation on $\mathbb R^d$ with power-law distribution on the radius with a finite $d$-moment for $d\ge 2$. We prove that subcritical sharpness occurs for all but a countable number of power-law distributions. This extends the results of Duminil-Copin--Raoufi--Tassion where subcritical sharpness is proved under the assumption that the radii distribution has a $5d-3$ finite moment. Our proofs techniques are different from their paper: we do not use randomized algorithm and rely on specific independence properties of Boolean percolation, inherited from the underlyin…
Heuristics indicate that point processes exhibiting clustering of points have larger critical radius $r_c$ for the percolation of their continuum percolation models than spatially homogeneous point processes. It has already been shown, and we reaffirm it in this paper, that the $dcx$ ordering of point processes is suitable to compare their clustering tendencies. Hence, it was tempting to conjecture that $r_c$ is increasing in $dcx$ order. Some numerical evidences support this conjecture for a special class of point processes, called perturbed lattices, which are "toy models" for determinantal …
We consider a non trivial Boolean model $Σ$ on ${\mathbb R}^d$ for $d\geq 2$. For every $x,y \in {\mathbb R}^d$ we define $T(x,y)$ as the minimum time needed to travel from $x$ to $y$ by a traveler that walks at speed $1$ outside $Σ$ and at infinite speed inside $Σ$. By a standard application of Kingman sub-additive theorem, one easily shows that $T(0,x)$ behaves like $μ\|x\|$ when $\|x\|$ goes to infinity, where $μ$ is a constant named the time constant in classical first passage percolation. In this paper we investigate the positivity of $μ$. More precisely, under an almost optimal moment as…
It is natural to expect that there are only three possible types of scaling limits for the collection of all percolation interfaces in the plane: (1) a trivial one, consisting of no curves at all, (2) a critical one, in which all points of the plane are surrounded by arbitrarily large loops and every deterministic point is almost surely surrounded by a countably infinite family of nested loops with radii going to zero, and (3) an intermediate one, in which every deterministic point of the plane is almost surely surrounded by a largest loop and by a countably infinite family of nested loops wit…
Let A be the annulus in R^2 centered at the origin with inner and outer radii r(1-ε) and r, respectively. Place points {x_i} in R^2 according to a Poisson process with intensity 1 and let G_A be the random graph with vertex set {x_i} and edges x_ix_j whenever x_i-x_j\in A. We show that if the area of A is large, then G_A almost surely has an infinite component. Moreover, if we fix ε, increase r and let n_c=n_c(ε) be the area of A when this infinite component appears, then n_c\to1 as ε\to 0. This is in contrast to the case of a ``square'' annulus where we show that n_c is bounded away from 1.
Consider (independent) first-passage percolation on the sites of the triangular lattice $\mathbb{T}$. Denote the passage time of the site $v$ in $\mathbb{T}$ by $t(v)$, and assume that $P(t(v)=0)=P(t(v)=1)=1/2$. Denote by $b_{0,n}$ the passage time from 0 to the halfplane $\{v\in\mathbb{T}:\mbox{Re}(v)\geq n\}$, and by $T(0,nu)$ the passage time from 0 to the nearest site to $nu$, where $|u|=1$. We prove that as $n\rightarrow\infty$, $b_{0,n}/\log n\rightarrow 1/(2\sqrt{3}π)$ a.s., $E[b_{0,n}]/\log n\rightarrow 1/(2\sqrt{3}π)$ and Var$[b_{0,n}]/\log n\rightarrow 2/(3\sqrt{3}π)-1/(2π^2)$; $T(0,…
Consider a family of Boolean models, indexed by integers $n \ge 1$, where the $n$-th model features a Poisson point process in ${\mathbb{R}}^n$ of intensity $e^{n ρ_n}$ with $ρ_n \to ρ$ as $n \to \infty$, and balls of independent and identically distributed radii distributed like $\bar X_n \sqrt{n}$, with $\bar X_n$ satisfying a large deviations principle. It is shown that there exist three deterministic thresholds: $τ_d$ the degree threshold; $τ_p$ the percolation threshold; and $τ_v$ the volume fraction threshold; such that asymptotically as $n$ tends to infinity, in a sense made precise in …
