The detection of an unexpected $\sim 2.5 M_{\odot}$ component in the gravitational wave event GW190814 has puzzled the community of High-Energy astrophysicists, since in the absence of further information it is not clear whether this is the heaviest "neutron star" ever detected or either the lightest black hole known, of a kind absent in the local neighbourhood. We show in this work a few possibilities for a model of the former, in the framework of three different quark matter models with and without anisotropy in the interior pressure. As representatives of classes of "exotic" solutions, we show that even though the stellar sequences may reach this ballpark, it is difficult to fulfill simultaneously the constraint of the radius as measured by the NICER team for the pulsar PSR J0030+0451. Thus, and assuming both measurements stand, compact neutron stars can not be all made of self-bound quark matter, even within anisotropic solutions which boost the maximum mass well above the $\sim 2.5 M_{\odot}$ figure. We also point out that a very massive compact star will limit the absolute maximum matter density in the present Universe to be less than 6 times the nuclear saturation value.
We study the evolution of binary systems of Ultra-luminous X-ray sources and compute their optical emission assuming accretion onto a black hole via a non standard, advection-dominated slim disc with an outflow. We consider systems with black holes of $20M_{\odot}$ and $100M_{\odot}$, and donor masses between $8M_{\odot}$ and $25M_{\odot}$. Super-critical accretion has considerable effects on the optical emission. The irradiating flux in presence of an outflow remains considerably stronger than that produced by a standard disc. However, at very high accretion rates the contribution of X-ray ir…
SN 2017ein is a narrow-lined Type Ic SN that was found to share a location with a point-like source in the face on spiral galaxy NGC 3938 in pre-supernova images, making SN 2017ein the first credible detection of a Type Ic progenitor. Results in the literature suggest this point-like source is likely a massive progenitor of 60-80 M$_{\odot}$, depending on if the source is a binary, a single star, or a compact cluster. Using new photometric and spectral data collected for 200 days, including several nebular spectra, we generate a consistent model covering the photospheric and nebular phase usin…

We have implemented prescriptions for modelling pulsars in the rapid binary population synthesis code COMPAS. We perform a detailed analysis of the double neutron star (DNS) population, accounting for radio survey selection effects. The surface magnetic field decay timescale (${\sim}1000$\,Myr) and mass scale (${\sim}0.02$\,M$_\odot$) are the dominant uncertainties in our model. Mass accretion during common envelope evolution plays a non-trivial role in recycling pulsars. We find a best-fit model that is in broad agreement with the observed Galactic DNS population. Though the pulsar parameters…
We investigate the properties of stars participating in double compact star merger events considering interacting model of stable strange quark matter. We model the matter making it compatible with the recent astrophysical observations of compact star mass-radius and gravitational wave events. In this context we consider modified MIT bag model and vector bag model with and without self interaction. We find new upper bound on tidal deformability of $1.4~M_\odot$ strange star corresponding to the upper bound of effective tidal deformability inferred from gravitational wave event. Range of compac…

This work analyses the hydrostatic equilibrium configurations of strange stars in a non-minimal geometry-matter coupling (GMC) theory of gravity. Those stars are made of strange quark matter, whose distribution is governed by the MIT equation of state. The non-minimal GMC theory is described by the following gravitational action: $f(R,L)=R/2+L+σRL$, where $R$ represents the curvature scalar, $L$ is the matter Lagrangian density, and $σ$ is the coupling parameter. When considering this theory, the strange stars become larger and more massive. In particular, when $σ=50$ km$^2$, the theory can ac…
We investigate observable signatures of a first-order quantum chromodynamics (QCD) phase transition in the context of core collapse supernovae. To this end, we conduct axially symmetric numerical relativity simulations with multi-energy neutrino transport, using a hadron-quark hybrid equation of state (EOS). We consider four non-rotating progenitor models, whose masses range from $9.6$ to $70$ M$_\odot$. We find that the two less massive progenitor stars (9.6 and 11.2 M$_\odot$) show a successful explosion, which is driven by the neutrino heating. They do not undergo the QCD phase transition a…
Using a quantum hadrodynamics (QHD) and MIT based models we construct hybrid stars within the Maxwell criteria of hadron-quark phase transition. We are able to produce a hybrid star with maximum mass of 2.15$M_\odot$. Furthermore, a 2.03$M_\odot$ star with a quark core corresponding to more than $80\%$ of both, its total mass and radius, is also possible.

X-ray eclipse mapping is a promising modelling technique, capable of constraining the mass and/or radius of neutron stars (NSs) or black holes (BHs) in eclipsing binaries and probing any structure surrounding the companion star. In eclipsing systems, the binary inclination, $i$, and mass ratio, $q$ relate via the duration of totality, $t_{e}$. The degeneracy between $i$ and $q$ can then be broken through detailed modelling of the eclipse profile. Here we model the eclipses of the NS low-mass X-ray binary Swift J1858.6$-$0814 utilising archival NICER observations taken while the source was in o…
We present the photometric and spectroscopic studies of a Type Ib SN 2015ap and a Type Ic SN 2016P. SN 2015ap is one of the bright (M$_{V}$ = $-$18.04 mag) Type Ib while SN 2016P lies at an average value among the Type Ic SNe (M$_{V}$ = $-$17.53 mag). Bolometric light curve modelling of SNe 2015ap and 2016P indicates that both the SNe are powered by $^{56}$Ni + magnetar model with $^{56}$Ni masses of 0.01 M$_{\odot}$ and 0.002 M$_{\odot}$, ejecta masses of 3.75 M$_{\odot}$ and 4.66 M$_{\odot}$, spin period P$_{0}$ of 25.8 ms and 36.5 ms and magnetic field B$_{p}$ of 28.39 $\times$ 10$^{14}$ Ga…
Higher-order repulsive interactions are included in the three-flavor NJL model in order to describe the quark phase of an hybrid star. The effect of 4-quark and 8-quark vector-isoscalar interactions in the stability of hybrid star configurations is analyzed. The presence of a 8-quark vector-isoscalar channel is seen to be crucial in generating large quark branches in the $M(R)$ diagram. This is due to its stiffening effect on the quark matter equation of state which arises from the non-linear density dependence of the speed of sound. This additional interaction channel allows for the appearanc…

Hyperon ($Y$) mixing in neutron-star matter brings about a remarkable softening of the equation of state (EoS) and the maximum mass is reduced to a value far less than $2M_{\odot}$. One idea to avoid this "hyperon puzzle in neutron stars" is to assume that the many-body repulsions work universally for every kind of baryons. The other is to take into account the quark deconfinement phase transitions from a hadronic EoS to a sufficiently stiff quark-matter EoS. In the present approach, both effects are handled in a common framework. As well as the hadronic matter, the quark matter with the two-b…
We extend the quark mean-field (QMF) model for nuclear matter and study the possible presence of quark matter inside the cores of neutron stars. A sharp first-order hadron-quark phase transition is implemented combining the QMF for the hadronic phase with "constant-speed-of-sound" parametrization for the high-density quark phase. The interplay of the nuclear symmetry energy slope parameter, $L$, and the dimensionless phase transition parameters (the transition density $n_{\rm trans}/n_0$, the transition strength $Δ\varepsilon/\varepsilon_{\rm trans}$, and the sound speed squared in quark matte…
We describe charge-neutral neutron star matter in $β-$equilibrium using hybrid equations of state, where a first-order phase transition from hadronic to quark matter is realized. The hadronic matter is described in a model-independent way by a Taylor expansion around saturation density $n_0$, while the three-flavor NJL model is used for the quark matter. Exploring the present uncertainty on the empirical parameters of nuclear matter and the parameter space of the NJL model, we construct two datasets of thermodynamically consistent and causal hybrid EoSs, compatible with astrophysical observati…
The rotating neutron star properties are studied with a phase transition to quark matter. The density-dependent relativistic mean-field model (DD-RMF) is employed to study the hadron matter, while the Vector-Enhanced Bag model (vBag) model is used to study the quark matter. The star matter properties like mass, radius, the moment of inertia, rotational frequency, Kerr parameter, and other important quantities are studied to see the effect on quark matter. The maximum mass of rotating neutron star with DD-LZ1 and DD-MEX parameter sets is found to be around 3$M_{\odot}$ for pure hadronic phase an…
Linking supernovae to their progenitors is a powerful method for furthering our understanding of the physical origin of their observed differences, while at the same time testing stellar evolution theory. In this second study of a series of three papers where we characterise SNe II to understand their diversity, we derive progenitor properties (initial and ejecta masses, and radius), explosion energy, $^{56}$Ni mass, and its degree of mixing within the ejecta for a large sample of SNe II. This dataset was obtained by the Carnegie Supernova Project-I and is characterised by a high cadence of th…
We perform a Bayesian analysis of the maximum mass $M_{\rm TOV}$ of neutron stars with a quark core, incorporating the observational data from tidal deformability of the GW170817 binary neutron star merger as detected by LIGO/Virgo and the mass and radius of PSR J0030+0451 as detected by \nicer. The analysis is performed under the assumption that the hadron-quark phase transition is of first order, where the low-density hadronic matter described in a unified manner by the soft QMF or the stiff DD2 equation of state (EOS) transforms into a high-density phase of quark matter modeled by the gener…
The existence of massive compact stars $(M\gtrsim 2.1 M_{\odot})$ implies that the conformal limit of the speed of sound $c_s^2=1/3$ is violated if those stars have a crust of ordinary nuclear matter. Here we show that, if the most massive objects are strange quark stars, i.e. stars entirely composed of quarks, the conformal limit can be respected while observational limits on those objects are also satisfied. By using astrophysical data associated with those massive stars, derived from electromagnetic and gravitational wave signals, we show, within a Bayesian analysis framework and by adoptin…
The hadron-quark phase transition in quantum chromodyanmics has been suggested as an alternative explosion mechanism for core-collapse supernovae. We study the impact of three different hadron-quark equations of state (EoS) with first-order (DD2F\_SF, STOS-B145) and second-order (CMF) phase transitions on supernova dynamics by performing 97 simulations for solar- and zero-metallicity progenitors in the range of $14\texttt{-}100\,\text{M}_\odot$. We find explosions only for two low-compactness models ($14 \text{M}_\odot$ and $16\,\text{M}_\odot$) with the DD2F\_SF EoS, both with low explosion e…
We investigate the implications of a hypothetical $2.5\,\mathrm{M_\odot}$ neutron star in regard to the possibility of a strong phase transition to quark matter. We use equations of state (EoS) of varying stiffness provided by a parameterizable relativistic mean filed model transitioning in a first order phase transition to quark matter with a constant speed of sound. We find a strong connection between the discontinuity in energy density and the maximal mass generated by the EoS. We demonstrate, that high maximal masses cannot be realized for large discontinuities in energy density, which are…
The detection of gravitational waves from GW170817 has provided a new opportunity to constrain the equation of state (EOS) of neutron stars. In this article, we investigate the possible existence of quarks inside the neutron star core in the context of GW170817. The nucleon phase is treated within the relativistic nuclear mean-field approach where we have employed a fully comprehensive set of available models, and the quark phase is described in the Bag model. We show that the nucleonic EOSs which are inconsistent with the tidal deformability bound become consistent when phase transition to qu…

The recent measurements of the masses of the pulsars PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0348-0432 provide independent proof for the existence of neutron stars with masses in range of 2 $M_\odot$. This fact has significant implications for the physics of high density matter and it challenges the hypothesis that the cores of NS can be composed of deconfined quark matter. In this contribution we study a description of quark matter based on the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio effective model and construct the equation of state for matter in beta equilibrium. This equation of state together with the hadronic Dirac-Brueck…
We constrain the equation of state of quark stars within the Bayesian statistical approach using the mass and radius measurements of PSR J0030+0451 from NICER. Three types of bag models, with and without non-zero finite quark mass and/or superfluidity, are employed for quark stars made up with self-bound strange quark matter. We find the $90\%$ posterior credible boundary around the most probable values of the quark star maximum mass is $M_{\rm TOV}=2.38_{-0.23}^{+0.26}\,M_{\odot}$, within the model flexibility of the finite quark mass, the quark pairing gap, and the perturbative contribution …
The stability and equation of state of quark matter are studied within both two-flavor and (2+1)-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) models including the vector interactions. With a free parameter $α$, the Lagrangian is constructed by two parts, the original NJL Lagrangian and the Fierz transformation of it, as $L=(1-α) L_{\rm{NJL}}+αL_{\rm{Fierz}}$. We find that there is a possibility for both $ud$ nonstrange and $uds$ strange matter being absolute stable, depending on the interplay of the confinement with quark vector interaction and the exchange interaction channels. The calculated quark star p…
We investigate the possibility that the low mass companion of the black hole in the source of GW190814 was a strange quark star. This possibility is viable within the so-called two-families scenario in which neutron stars and strange quark stars coexist. Strange quark stars can reach the mass range indicated by GW190814, $M\sim (2.5-2.67) M_\odot$ due to a large value of the adiabatic index, without the need for a velocity of sound close to the causal limit. Neutron stars (actually hyperonic stars in the two-families scenario) can instead fulfill the presently available astrophysical and nucle…
Blue-supergiant stars develop into core-collapse supernovae --- one of the most energetic outbursts in the universe --- when all nuclear burning fuel is exhausted in the stellar core. Previous attempts failed to explain observed explosions of such stars which have a zero-age main sequence mass of 50~M$_\odot$ or more. Here we exploit the largely uncertain state of matter at high density, and connect the modeling of such stellar explosions with a first-order phase transition from nuclear matter to the quark-gluon plasma. The resulting energetic supernova explosions can account for a large varie…
We point out that the very existence of a "horizontal branch" in the mass-radius characteristics for neutron stars indicates a strong first-order phase transition and thus supports the existence of a critical endpoint (CEP) of first order phase transitions in the QCD phase diagram. This branch would sample a sequence of hybrid stars with quark matter core, leading to the endpoint of stable compact star configurations with the highest possible baryon densities. Since we know of the existence of compact stars with $2M_\odot$, this hypothetical branch has to lie in the vicinity of this mass value…
We investigate interacting quark matter (IQM), including the perturbative QCD correction and color superconductivity, for both up-down quark matter ($ud$QM) and strange quark matter (SQM). We first derive an equation of state (EOS) unifying all cases by a simple reparametrization and rescaling, through which we manage to maximally reduce the number of degrees of freedom. We find, in contrast to the conventional EOS $p=1/3(ρ-4B_{\rm eff})$ for non-interacting quark matter, that taking the extreme strongly interacting limit on the unified IQM EOS gives $p=ρ-2B_{\rm eff}$, where $B_{\rm eff}$ is …
We have evolved mergers of equal-mass binary quark stars, the total mass of which is close to the mass shedding limit of uniformly rotating configurations, in fully general relativistic hydrodynamic simulations, aimed at investigating the post-merger outcomes. In particular, we have identified the threshold mass for prompt black hole formation after the merger, by tracing the minimum lapse function as well as the amount of ejected material during the merger simulation. A semi-analytical investigation based on the angular momentum contained in the merger remnant is also performed to verify the …
In this work we revisit the quantum hadrodynamics (QHD) formalism to investigate hyperonic and hybrid stars with hyperon-meson couplings fixed via broken SU(6) group, in favor of a more general flavor group SU(3). We also employ an additional channel, the strangeness-hidden $ϕ$ meson, which couples only to the hyperons. In hybrid stars, the quark phase is built with the SU(3) NJL model also with an additional vector channel in the Lagrangian. We found that within the models chosen the hyperon puzzle cannot be avoided by the quark-hadron phase transition, once the hyperon threshold always happe…
Quark matter may appear due to a hadronic-quark transition in the core of a hybrid star. Quarkyonic matter is an approach in which both quarks and nucleons appear as quasi-particles in a crossover transition, and provides an explicit realization of early ideas concerning quark matter (e.g., the MIT bag model). This description has recently been employed by McLerran and Reddy to model chargeless (pure neutron) matter with an approach that has the virtue that the speed of sound rises quickly at a neutron-quark transition so as to satisfy observational constraints on the neutron star maximum mass…
We explore the implications of the recent radius determination of PSR J0740+6620 by the NICER experiment combined with the neutron skin measurement by the PREX-II experiment and the associated inference of the slope of symmetry energy, for the structure of hybrid stars with a strong first-order phase transition from nucleonic to quark matter. We combine a covariant density-functional nucleonic equation of state (EOS) with a constant-speed-of-sound EOS for quark matter. We show that the radius and tidal deformability ranges obtained from GW170817 can be reconciled with the implication of the PR…
Recent discoveries of double neutron star (DNS) mergers and ultra-stripped supernovae (SNe) raise the questions of their origin and connection. We present the first 1D~model of a DNS progenitor system which is calculated self-consistently until an ultra-stripped iron core collapse. We apply the \texttt{MESA} code starting from a post-common envelope binary consisting of a $1.35\;M_\odot$ NS and a $3.20\;M_\odot$ zero-age main-sequence helium star and continue the modelling via Case~BB Roche-lobe overflow until the infall velocity of the collapsing iron core exceeds $1000\;{\rm km\,s}^{-1}$. Th…
In this Letter, we report the outcomes of 1-D modelling of a rotating 25 M$_{\odot}$ zero-age main-sequence Population III star up to the stage of the onset of core collapse. Rapidly rotating models display violent and sporadic mass losses after the Main-Sequence stage. In comparison to the solar metallicity model, Pop III models show very small pre-supernova radii. Further, with models at the stage of the onset of core collapse, we simulate the hydrodynamic simulations of resulting supernovae. Depending upon the mass losses due to corresponding rotations and stellar winds, the resulting super…
A wind-driven model is a new framework to model observational properties of transients that are powered by continuous outflow from a central system. While it has been applied to Fast Blue Optical Transients (FBOTs), the applicability has been limited to post-peak behaviours due to the steady-state assumptions; non-steady-state physics, e.g., expanding outflow, is important to model the initial rising phase. In this paper, we construct a time-dependent wind-driven model, which can take into account the expanding outflow and the time evolution of the outflow rate. We apply the model to a sample …
