We investigate the possibility that stellar mass black holes, with masses in the range of $3.8M_{\odot}$ and $6M_{\odot}$, respectively, could be in fact quark stars in the Color-Flavor-Locked (CFL) phase. Depending on the value of the gap parameter, rapidly rotating CFL quark stars can achieve much higher masses than standard neutron stars, thus making them possible stellar mass black hole candidates. Moreover, quark stars have a very low luminosity and a completely absorbing surface - the infalling matter on the surface of the quark star is converted into quark matter. A possibility of distinguishing CFL quark stars from stellar mass black holes could be through the study of thin accretion disks around rapidly rotating quark stars and Kerr type black holes, respectively. Furthermore, we show that the radiation properties of accretion disks around black holes and CFL quark stars are also very similar. However, strange stars exhibit a low luminosity, but high temperature bremsstrahlung spectrum, which, in combination with the emission properties of the accretion disk, may be the key signature to differentiate massive strange stars from black hole.
We propose a form of gravity-matter interaction given by $ωRT$ in the framework of $f(R,T)$ gravity and examine the effect of such interaction in spherically symmetric compact stars. Treating the gravity-matter coupling as a perturbative term on the background of Starobinsky gravity, we develop a perturbation theory for equilibrium configurations. For illustration, we take the case of quark stars and explore their various stellar properties. We find that the gravity-matter coupling causes an increase in the stable maximal mass which is relevant for recent observations on binary pulsars.
The binary black hole mergers observed by LIGO-Virgo gravitational-wave detectors pose two major challenges: (i) how to produce these massive black holes from stellar processes; and (ii) how to bring them close enough to merge within the age of the universe? We derive a fundamental constraint relating the binary separation and the available stellar budget in the universe to produce the observed black hole mergers. We find that $\lesssim 14\%$ of the entire budget contributes to the observed merger rate of $(30 + 30)~\mathrm{M}_\odot$ black holes, if the separation is around the diameter of the…
Black hole spin will have a large impact on searches for gravitational waves with advanced detectors. While only a few stellar mass black hole spins have been measured using X-ray techniques, gravitational wave detectors have the capacity to greatly increase the statistics of black hole spin measurements. We show what we might learn from these measurements and how the black hole spin values are influenced by their formation channels.
The LIGO and Virgo detectors have directly observed gravitational waves from mergers of pairs of stellar-mass black holes, along with a smaller number of mergers involving neutron stars. These observations raise the hope that compact object mergers could be used as a probe of stellar and binary evolution, and perhaps of stellar dynamics. This colloquium-style article summarises the existing observations, describes theoretical predictions for formation channels of merging stellar-mass black-hole binaries along with their rates and observable properties, and presents some prospects for gravitati…
In this work a density dependent quark model is revisited, its thermodynamic consistency checked and the stability window for absolutely stable quark matter obtained. The hypotheses of both pure quark matter with equal quark chemical potentials and stellar matter subject to chemical stability and charge neutrality are investigated. The parameters that appear in the density dependent mass and satisfy the Bodmer-Witten conjecture are then used to compute the masses and radii of strange stars. We show that the obtained values are compatible with the recently observed massive stars.
We perform a search for stellar-mass black hole candidates in the spatial regions with increased probability of their occurrence, isolated based on the evolutionary scenarios for compact objects originating in disrupted binaries. We analyze the sources located in these regions with available spectral or photometric data, as well as measured proper motions and distances. Nine objects that exhibit characteristics corresponding to theoretical predictions for isolated black holes are marked for further study as black hole candidates.
Testing the Kerr-nature of stellar-mass black hole candidates by combining the continuum-fitting method and the power estimate of transient ballistic jets
It has been suggested that there is possibly a class of stellar-mass black holes (BHs) residing near (distance $\le 10^3 M$) the galactic center massive black hole, Sgr A*. Possible formation scenarios include the mass segregation of massive stellar-mass black holes and/or the disk migration if there was an active accretion flow near Sgr A* within $\mathcal{O}(10)$ Myr. In this work, we explore the application of this type of objects as sources of space-borne gravitational wave detectors, such as Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). We find it is possible to probe the spin of Sgr A* base…
Context: The LIGO consortium announced the first direct detection of gravitation wave event GW150914 from two merging black holes; however the nature of the black holes are still not clear. Aims: We study whether electromagnetic radiation can be detected from merging stellar mass black binaries like GW150914. Methods: We briefly investigate the possible growth and merging processes of the two stellar mass black holes in the merging event of GW150914 detected by aLIGO, as clocked by a distant external observer. Our main results are: (1) The description of the black hole growth using stationary …
Recent detections of gravitational waves from merging binary black holes opened new possibilities to study the evolution of massive stars and black hole formation. In particular, stellar evolution models may be constrained on the basis of the differences in the predicted distribution of black hole masses and redshifts. In this work we propose a framework that combines galaxy and stellar evolution models and use it to predict the detection rates of merging binary black holes for various stellar evolution models. We discuss the prospects of constraining the shape of the time delay distribution o…
The observation of the shadows cast by the event horizon of black holes on the light emitted in its neighborhood is the target of current very-long-baseline-interferometric observations. When considering supermassive black holes, the light source is the black hole's accretion disk, and therefore, the observation of the shadow may reveal information about the black hole and the accretion flow. We here study the shadows cast by stellar-mass black holes that are illuminated not by an accretion disk but by a stellar companion in a wide binary orbit. We calculate the shadows produced in such a conf…
We explore here an scenario for massive black hole formation driven by stellar collisions in galactic nuclei, proposing a new formation regime of global instability in nuclear stellar clusters triggered by runaway stellar collisions. Using order of magnitude estimations, we show that observed nuclear stellar clusters avoid the regime where stellar collisions are dynamically relevant over the whole system, while resolved detections of massive black holes are well into such collision-dominated regime. We interpret this result in terms of massive black holes and nuclear stellar clusters being dif…
The iron line and the continuum-fitting methods are currently the two leading techniques for measuring black hole spins with electromagnetic radiation. They can be naturally extended for probing the spacetime geometry around black holes and testing general relativity in the strong field regime. In the past couple of years, there has been significant work to use the iron line method to test the nature of black holes. In this Letter, we use the continuum-fitting method and we show its capability of constraining the spacetime geometry around black holes by analyzing 17 RXTE data of the X-ray bina…
Advanced LIGO detectors at Hanford and Livingston made two confirmed and one marginal detection of binary black holes during their first observing run. The first event, GW150914, was from the merger of two black holes much heavier that those whose masses have been estimated so far, indicating a formation scenario that might differ from "ordinary" stellar evolution. One possibility is that these heavy black holes resulted from a previous merger. When the progenitors of a black hole binary merger result from previous mergers, they should (on average) merge later, be more massive, and have spin m…
A stellar mass black hole can grow its mass noticeably through Bondi accretion, if it is embedded in an extremely dense and massive molecular cloud with slow motion with respect to the ambient medium for an extended period of time. This provides a novel, yet challenging channel for the formation of massive stellar-mass black holes. We discuss how this channel may account for the massive binary black hole merger system GW190521 as observed by LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave detectors as well as the claimed massive black hole candidate LB-1.
The strange quark matter under strong magnetic fields and finite temperatures is studied in the framework of the MIT Bag model. Matter under such conditions is believed to be present in the core of dense astrophysical objects, like Neutron Stars and more exotic compact objects like Quark Stars. In this study, the anisotropy of the pressure due to the presence of a strong magnetic field is taken into account and a temperature-dependent equation of state is obtained. In the strong field regime, the behavior of the transversal pressure suggests a transversal collapse of the quark and electron gas…
Supermassive black holes are found in most galactic nuclei. A large fraction of these nuclei also contain a nuclear stellar cluster surrounding the black hole. Here we consider the idea that the nuclear stellar cluster formed first and that the supermassive black hole grew later. In particular we consider the merger of three stellar clusters to form a nuclear stellar cluster, where some of these clusters contain a single intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). In the cases where multiple clusters contain IMBHs, we discuss whether the black holes are likely to merge and whether such mergers are li…
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, LIGO, found direct evidence for double black hole binaries emitting gravitational waves. Galactic nuclei are expected to harbor the densest population of stellar-mass black holes. A significant fraction ($\sim30\%$) of these black holes can reside in binaries. We examine the fate of the black hole binaries in active galactic nuclei, which get trapped in the inner region of the accretion disk around the central supermassive black hole. We show that binary black holes can migrate into and then rapidly merge within the disk well within a Sa…
We explore the stellar structure and radial stability of charged quark stars composed of interacting quark matter (IQM) in three classes of commonly used charge models. We adopt a general parametrization of IQM equation of state that includes the corrections from perturbative QCD, color superconductivity, and the strange quark mass into one parameter $λ$, or one dimensionless parameter $\barλ=λ^2/(4B_{\rm eff})$ after being rescaled with the effective bag constant $B_{\rm eff}$. We find that increasing charge tends to increase the mass and radius profiles, and enlarges the separation size in m…
A significant number of stellar-mass black-hole (BH) binaries may merge in galactic nuclei or in the surrounding gas disks. With purposed space-borne gravitational-wave observatories, we may use such a binary as a signal carrier to probe modulations induced by a central supermassive BH (SMBH), which further allows us to place constraints on the SMBH's properties. We show in particular the de Sitter precession of the inner stellar-mass binary's orbital angular momentum (AM) around the AM of the outer orbit will be detectable if the precession period is comparable to the duration of observation,…
Modern astrophysical methods of determination of spins of rotating stellar-mass black hole in close binaries and of supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei are briefly discussed. Effective spins of coalescing binary black holes derived from LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave observations are specially addressed. We consider three types of coalescing binaries: double black holes, black hole-neutron star binaries and primordial double black holes. The effective spins of coalescing astrophysical binary black holes and black holes with neutron stars are calculated for two plausible models of…
In large and complicated stellar systems like galaxies it is difficult to predict the number and characteristics of a black hole population. Such populations may be modelled as an aggregation of homogeneous (i.e. having uniform star formation history and the same initial chemical composition) stellar populations. Using realistic evolutionary models we predict the abundances and properties of black holes formed from binaries in these environments. We show that the black hole population will be dominated by single black holes originating from binary disruptions and stellar mergers. Furthermore, …
We show that binaries of stellar-mass black holes formed inside a young protoglobular cluster, can grow rapidly inside the cluster's core by accretion of the intracluster gas, before the gas may be depleted from the core. A black hole with mass of the order of eight solar masses can grow to values of the order of thirty five solar masses in accordance with recent gravitational waves signals observed by LIGO. Due to the black hole mass increase, a binary may also harden. The growth of binary black holes in a dense protoglobular cluster through mass accretion indicates a potentially important fo…
Different extensions of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, known to satisfy expected QCD chiral symmetry aspects, are used to investigate a possible hadron-quark phase transition at zero temperature and to build the corresponding binodal sections. We have shown that the transition point is very sensitive to the model parameters and that both pressure and chemical potential increase drastically with the increase of the vector interaction strength in the quark sector. Within the same framework, the possibility of quark and hybrid star formation is analyzed. The same conclusions drawn before with resp…
It has been suggested for a long time that dark matter would form a density spike around a black hole. However, no promising evidence has been observed so far to verify this theoretical suggestion. Here, we report the existence of a dark matter density spike around each of the two nearby stellar-mass black holes (A0620-00 and XTE J1118+480). The dynamical friction between dark matter and the companion stars can satisfactorily explain the abnormally fast orbital decays in the two binaries. The calculated spike index for A0620-00 and XTE J1118+480 are $γ=1.71^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$ and $γ=1.85^{+0.04}…
In this paper we study efficiency of particle acceleration in the magnetospheres of stellar mass black holes. For this purpose we consider the linearized set of the Euler equation, continuity equation and Poisson equation respectively. After introducing the varying relativistic centrifugal force, we show that the charge separation undergoes the parametric instability, leading to generation of centrifugally excited Langmuir waves. It is shown that these waves, via the Langmuir collapse damp by means of the Landau damping, as a result energy transfers to particles accelerating them to energies o…
Observational evidence suggests that the majority of stars may have been born in stellar clusters or associations. Within these dense environments, dynamical interactions lead to high rates of close stellar encounters. A variety of recent observational and theoretical indications suggest stellar-mass black holes may be present and play an active dynamical role in stellar clusters of all masses. In this study, we explore the tidal disruption of main sequence stars by stellar-mass black holes in young star clusters. We compute a suite of over 3000 independent $N$-body simulations that cover a ra…
In order to explain unusually high luminosity and spectral nature of ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs), some of the underlying black holes are argued to be of intermediate mass, between several tens to million solar masses. Indeed, there is a long standing question of missing mass of intermediate range of black holes. However, as some ULXs are argued to be neutron stars too, often their unusual high luminosity is argued by super-Eddington accretions. Nevertheless, all the models are based on non-magnetized or weakly magnetized accretion. There are, however, evidences that magnetic fields in …
The conventional view of stellar-mass binary black hole (sBBH) mergers is that there should not be enough matter present to produce a detectable electromagnetic transient. However, there ARE a number of mechanisms for producing such a counterpart through accretion of matter from various reserves, charged black holes, or interactions with magnetic or exotic fields. After reviewing these mechanisms, we describe what we can learn from multi-messenger observations of sBBH mergers in the areas of stellar evolution and compact binary formation, cosmological measurements, searches for charged black h…
The merger rate of stellar-mass black hole binaries (sBHBs) inferred by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) suggests the need for an efficient source of sBHB formation. Active galactic nucleus (AGN) disks are a promising location for the formation of these sBHBs, as well as binaries of other compact objects, because of powerful torques exerted by the gas disk. These gas torques cause orbiting compact objects to migrate towards regions in the disk where inward and outward torques cancel, known as migration traps. We simulate the migration of stellar mass blac…
Ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) have been puzzling us with a debate whether they consist of an intermediate mass black hole or super-Eddington accretion by a stellar mass black hole. Here we suggest that in the presence of large scale strong magnetic fields and non-negligible vertical motion, the luminosity of ULXs, particularly in their hard states, can be explained with sub-Eddington accretion by stellar mass black holes. In this framework of 2.5D magnetized advective accretion flows, magnetic tension plays the role of transporting matter (equivalent to viscous shear via turbulent viscos…
Stars that pass close to the supermassive black holes located in the center of galaxies can be violently disrupted by tidal forces, leading to flares that are observed as bright transient events in sky surveys. The rate for these events to occur depends on the black hole spins, which in turn can be affected by ultra-light bosons due to superradiance. We perform a detailed analysis of these effects and show that searches for stellar tidal disruptions have a significant potential to uncover the existence of ultra-light bosons. In particular, we find that upcoming stellar tidal disruption rate me…
Accretion disks around stellar-mass black holes offer unique opportunities to study the fundamental physics of standard thin disks, super-Eddington disks, and structure that may be connected to flux variability. These local analogues of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are particularly attractive for their proximity, high flux, and peak emissivity in the X-ray band. X-ray calorimeter spectrometers, with energy resolutions of 2-5 eV, are ideally suited to study accretion in stellar-mass black holes. The results will make strong tests of seminal disk theory that applies in a broad range of circumsta…
I present a set of long-term, direct, relativistic many-body computations of model dense stellar clusters with up-to-date stellar-evolutionary, supernova (SN), and remnant natal-kick models, including pair instability and pulsation pair instability supernova (PSN and PPSN), using an updated version of NBODY7 N-body simulation program. The N-body model also includes stellar evolution-based natal spins of BHs and treatments of binary black hole (BBH) mergers based on numerical relativity. These, for the first time in a direct N-body simulation, allow for second-generation BBH mergers. The set of…
Stellar-remnant black holes (BH) in dense stellar clusters comprise a natural setup to trigger general-relativistic (GR) inspiral and merger of binary black holes (BBH), detectable by the LISA and the LIGO-Virgo, through dynamical encounters inside such environments. In this work, the intricacies of such dynamical interactions are probed utilizing realistic, self-consistent, post-Newtonian, direct N-body evolutionary models of young massive and open stellar clusters. Particularly, the configurations of the compact subsystems, that drive the in-cluster GR BBH coalescences, are tracked on the fl…
In this work we present a case that Microscopic Black Holes (MBH) of mass $10^{16}\ kg$ to $3 \cdot 10^{19}\ kg$ experience acceleration as they move within stellar material at low velocities. The accelerating forces are caused by the fact that a MBH moving through stellar material leaves a trail of hot rarified gas. The rarified gas behind a MBH exerts lower gravitational force on the MBH than the dense gas in front of it. The accelerating forces exceed the gravitational drag forces when MBH moves at Mach number $\mathcal{M}<\mathcal{M}_0$. The equilibrium Mach number $\mathcal{M}_0$ depends …
