Black holes in General Relativity are known as Kerr black holes and are characterized solely by two parameters, the mass $M$ and the spin $J$. All the higher multipole moments of the gravitational field are functions of these two parameters. For instance, the quadrupole moment is $Q=-J^2/M$, which implies that a measurement of $M$, $J$, and $Q$ for black hole candidates would allow one to test whether these objects are really black holes as described by General Relativity. While future gravitational-wave experiments will be able to test the Kerr nature of these objects with very high accuracy, in this paper we show that it is possible to put constraints on the quadrupole moment of stellar-mass black hole candidates by using presently available X-ray data of the thermal spectrum of their accretion disk.
One avenue for testing the no-hair theorem is obtained through timing a pulsar orbiting close to a black hole and fitting for quadrupolar effects on the time-of-arrival of pulses. If deviations from the Kerr quadrupole are measured, then the no-hair theorem is invalidated. To this end, we derive an expression for the light travel time delay for a pulsar orbiting in a black-hole spacetime described by the Butterworth-Ipser metric, which has an arbitrary spin and quadrupole moment. We consider terms up to the quadrupole order in the black-hole metric and derive the time-delay expression in a clo…
Pulsar timing arrays are sensitive to gravitational wave perturbations produced by individual supermassive black hole binaries during their early inspiral phase. Modified gravity theories allow for the emission of gravitational dipole radiation, which is enhanced relative to the quadrupole contribution for low orbital velocities, making the early inspiral an ideal regime to test for the presence of modified gravity effects. Using a theory-agnostic description of modified gravity theories based on the parametrized post-Einsteinian framework, we explore the possibility of detecting deviations fr…
We perform an observational test of no-hair theorem using quasi-periodic oscillations within the relativistic precession model. Two well motivated metrics we apply are Kerr-Q and Hartle-Thorne metrics in which the quadrupole is the parameter that possibly encodes deviations from the Kerr black hole. The expressions for the quasi-periodic frequencies are derived before comparing the models with the observation. We encounter a degeneracy in constraining spin and quadrupole parameters that makes it difficult to measure their values. In particular, we here propose a novel test of no-hair theorem b…
Cosmic inflation, a period of accelerated expansion in the early universe, can give rise to large amplitude ultra-large scale inhomogeneities on distance scales comparable to or larger than the observable universe. The cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy on the largest angular scales is sensitive to such inhomogeneities and can be used to constrain the presence of ultra-large scale structure (ULSS). We numerically evolve nonlinear inhomogeneities present at the beginning of inflation in full General Relativity to assess the CMB quadrupole constraint on the amplitude of the initial flu…
The continuum-fitting and the iron line methods are leading techniques capable of probing the spacetime geometry around astrophysical black hole candidates and testing the no-hair theorem. In the present paper, we review the two approaches, from the astrophysical models and their assumptions, to the constraining power with present and future facilities.
A theory is derived relating the configuration of the cores of active galaxies, specifically candidates for presumed super-massive black hole binaries (SMBHBs), to time-dependent changes in images of those galaxies. Three deflection quantities, resulting from the monopole term, mass quadrupole term, and spin dipole term of the core, are examined. The resulting observational technique is applied to the galaxy 3C66B. This technique is found to under idealized circumstances surpass the technique proposed by Jenet et al. in accuracy for constraining the mass of SMBHB candidates, but is exceeded in…
A moderately spinning neutron star acquires an oblate shape and a spacetime with a significant quadrupole moment. These two properties affect its apparent surface area for an observer at infinity, as well as the lightcurve arising from a hot spot on its surface. In this paper, we develop a ray-tracing algorithm to calculate the apparent surface areas of moderately spinning neutron stars making use of the Hartle-Thorne metric. This analytic metric allows us to calculate various observables of the neutron star in a way that depends only on its macroscopic properties and not on the details of its…
The iron line and the continuum-fitting methods are currently the two leading techniques for measuring black hole spins with electromagnetic radiation. They can be naturally extended for probing the spacetime geometry around black holes and testing general relativity in the strong field regime. In the past couple of years, there has been significant work to use the iron line method to test the nature of black holes. In this Letter, we use the continuum-fitting method and we show its capability of constraining the spacetime geometry around black holes by analyzing 17 RXTE data of the X-ray bina…
We investigate the gravitational radiation emitted by an isolated system for gravity theories with Lagrange density $f(R) = R + aR^2$. As a formal result we obtain leading order corrections to the quadrupole formula in General Relativity. We make use of the analogy of $f(R)$ theories with scalar--tensor theories, which in contrast to General Relativity feature an additional scalar degree of freedom. Unlike General Relativity, where the leading order gravitational radiation is produced by quadrupole moments, the additional degree of freedom predicts gravitational radiation of all multipoles, in…
The Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) mission has provided a unique opportunity to constrain the equation of state of neutron stars by using the technique of pulse-profile modelling. This technique requires accurate and efficient ray tracing, that in turn requires a robust representation of the spacetime around a neutron star. Several exact and approximate metrics have been proposed, and used, to perform ray tracing around neutron stars, with both moderate and fast rotation. In this paper, we perform a comparison between several of these metrics, when used for ray tracing. We …
The detection of gravitational waves from the inspiral of a neutron star or stellar-mass black hole into an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) promises an entirely new look at strong-field gravitational physics. Gravitational waves from these intermediate-mass-ratio inspirals (IMRIs), systems with mass ratios from ~10:1 to ~100:1, may be detectable at rates of up to a few tens per year by Advanced LIGO/Virgo and will encode a signature of the central body's spacetime. Direct observation of the spacetime will allow us to use the "no-hair" theorem of general relativity to determine if the IMBH …
Starlight in the Universe impedes the passage of high energy (e.g. TeV) gamma rays due to positron-electron pair production. The history of this stellar radiation field depends upon observations of star formation rate which themselves can only be interpreted in the context of a particular cosmology. For different equations of state of dark energy, the star formation rate data suggests a different density of stellar photons at a particular redshift and a different probability of arrival of gamma rays from distant sources. In this work we aim to show that this effect can be used to constrain the…
New high-precision observations are now possible to constrain different gravity theories. To examine the accelerated expansion of the Universe, we used the newly proposed $f(Q,T)$ gravity, where $Q$ is the non-metricity, and $T$ is the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. The investigation is carried out using a parameterized effective equation of state with two parameters, $m$ and $n$. We have also considered the linear form of $f(Q,T)= Q+bT$, where $b$ is constant. By constraining the model with the recently published 1048 Pantheon sample, we were able to find the best fitting values for the…
The possibility for Lorentz/CPT-breaking, which is motivated by unification theories, can be systematically tested within the standard-model extension framework. In the pure gravity sector, the mass dimension 5 operators produce new Lorentz and CPT-breaking terms in the 2-body equations of motion that depend on the relative velocity of the bodies. In this Letter, we report new constraints on 15 independent SME coefficients for Lorentz/CPT-violations with mass dimension 5 using lunar laser ranging. We perform a global analysis of lunar ranging data within the SME framework using more than 26,00…
We proposed a model-independent method to constrain the cosmological parameters using the Distance Sum Rule of the FLRW metric by combining the time delay distances and the comoving distances through a multi-messenger approach. The time delay distances are measured from lensed gravitational wave~(GW) signals together with their corresponding electromagnetic wave~(EM) counterpart, while the comoving distances are obtained from a parametrized fitting approach with independent supernova observations. With a series of simulations based on Einstein Telescope, Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and The…

We present in this work a study of brane theory phenomenology focusing on the brane tension parameter, which is the main observable of the theory. We show the modifications steaming from the presence of branes in the rotation curves of spiral galaxies for three well known dark matter density profiles: the Pseudo isothermal, Navarro-Frenk-White and Burkert dark matter density profiles. We estimate the brane tension parameter using a sample of high resolution observed rotation curves of low surface brightness spiral galaxies and a synthetic rotation curve for the three density profiles. Also, th…
In this paper we study the effect of the Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) on the shadow of GUP-modified Kerr black hole and the correspondence between the shadow radius and the real part of the quasinormal modes (QNMs). We find that the shadow curvature radius of the GUP-modfied Kerr black hole is bigger compared to the Kerr vacuum solution and increases linearly monotonically with the increase of the GUP parameter. We then investigate the characteristic points of intrinsic curvature of the shadow from a topological point of view to calculate the the angular size for these curvature rad…
