A theory is derived relating the configuration of the cores of active galaxies, specifically candidates for presumed super-massive black hole binaries (SMBHBs), to time-dependent changes in images of those galaxies. Three deflection quantities, resulting from the monopole term, mass quadrupole term, and spin dipole term of the core, are examined. The resulting observational technique is applied to the galaxy 3C66B. This technique is found to under idealized circumstances surpass the technique proposed by Jenet et al. in accuracy for constraining the mass of SMBHB candidates, but is exceeded in accuracy and precision by Jenet's technique under currently-understood likely conditions. The technique can also under favorable circumstances produce results measurable by currently-available astronomical interferometry such as very-long baseline-interferometry (VLBI).
We examine the motion of a photon in the gravitational field of a binary system. The equations of motion are geodesic equations in a Schwarzchild background with a tidal force. We specialize the equations to that of an edge-on binary and use the method of osculating elements to integrate them. This work helps to identify a binary system through the gravitational light deflection of one member in the gravitational field of the other member. It is found that the effects of the companion body on a photon passing the edge of the star can be potentially detected by astrometric satellites with $μ$as…
The light deflection of one component of a binary system due to the gravitational field of the other component is investigated. While this relativistic effect has not been observed thus far, the question arises that whether this effect becomes detectable in view of todays high-precision astrometry which soon will reach the microarcsecond level of accuracy. The effect is studied and its observability is investigated. It turns out, that in total there are about 1000 binaries having orbital parameters such that the light deflection amounts to be at least 1 microarcsecond. Two stringent criteria f…
While the deflection of light is achromatic in General Relativity, it is not always so in several new-physics models (e.g. certain quantum-gravity and string-inspired models, models with nonminimal photon-gravity coupling or with massive photon etc.). We discuss how parameters of these models may be constrained by precise astrometry at different wavelenghts. From published observations of the gravitational lens MG J2016+112, we obtain world-best limits on chromatic gravitational deflection of light (and the unique limit on the photon mass relevant for distance scales >Mpc). We also outline pro…
In the present letter we examine the possibility of constraining dyon black holes based on the available observational data at the scale of the Solar system. For this we consider the classical tests of general relativity, viz., the perihelion precession of the planet Mercury and the deflection of light by the Sun. In connection to mathematical analysis we are considering static and spherically symmetric dyon black hole which carries both the electric and magnetic charge simultaneously, which are encoded it by the parameters $λ_0$ and $β_0$. We constrain these two parameters using the Solar sys…
Light deflection in the post-linear gravitational field of two bounded point-like masses is treated. Both the light source and the observer are assumed to be located at infinity in an asymptotically flat space. The equations of light propagation are explicitly integrated to the second order in $G/c^2$. Some of the integrals are evaluated by making use of an expansion in powers of the ratio of the relative separation distance to the impact parameter $(r_{12}/ξ)$. A discussion of which orders must be retained to be consistent with the expansion in terms of $G/c^2$ is given. It is shown that the …
An improved formula for the timing of binary pulsars that accounts for the relativistic deflection of light in the gravitational field of the pulsar's companion is presented, and the measurability of this effect together with its variance estimates are discussed. The deflection of the pulsar's beam trajectory in the gravitational field of its companion leads to variation in the pulsar's rotational phase. This variation appears as the narrow sharp growth of the magnitude of the post-fit pulsar timing residuals in the vicinity of the moment of the superior conjunction of the pulsar with its comp…
In this paper, we introduce the post-Minkowskian approximation of Energy-Momentum-Squared Gravity (EMSG). This approximation is used to study the gravitational energy flux in the context of EMSG. As an application of our results, we investigate the EMSG effect on the first time derivative of the orbital period of the binary pulsars. Utilizing this post-Keplerian parameter, the free parameter of the EMSG theory, $f_0'$, is estimated for six known binary pulsars. Taking the binaries that have the most accurate observations, it turns out that $-6\times 10^{-37}\text{m}\,\text{s}^2\text{kg}^{-1}<f…
We discuss gravitational lensing in the Kehagias-Sfetsos space-time emerging in the framework of Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. In weak lensing we show that there are three regimes, depending on the value of $\bar λ=1/ωd^{2}$, where $ω$ is the Hořava-Lifshitz parameter and $d$ characterizes the lensing geometry. When $\bar λ$ is close to zero, light deflection typically produces two images, as in Schwarzschild lensing. For very large $\bar λ$ the space-time approaches flatness, therefore there is only one undeflected image. In the intermediate range of $\bar λ$ only the upper focused image is produc…
We revisit the decay of the orbital period in binary systems that occurs due to the emission of gravitational waves in the context of modified gravity models where the coupling $G_{gw}$ between matter and on-shell gravitons is allowed to differ from the Newton constant $G_N$. Using the most precise orbital parameters of binary pulsars, those of the Double Pulsar, we constrain the ratio $G_{gw}/G_N$ to the level of $10^{-4}$, improving by two orders of magnitude the present bound on this quantity.
We present a flexible model to describe the effects of generic deviations of observed gravitational wave signals from modeled waveforms in the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors. With the detection of 11 gravitational wave events from the GWTC-1 catalog, we are able to constrain possible deviations from our modeled waveforms. In this paper we present our coherent spline model that describes the deviations, then choose to validate our model on an example phenomenological and astrophysically motivated departure in waveforms based on extreme spontaneous scalarization. We find that the mo…
In this paper, we study rotating black holes in symmergent gravity, and use deviations from the Kerr black hole to constrain the parameters of the symmergent gravity. Symmergent gravity induces the gravitational constant $G$ and quadratic curvature coefficient $c_{\rm O}$ from the flat spacetime matter loops. In the limit in which all fields are degenerate in mass, the vacuum energy $V_{\rm O}$ can be wholly expressed in terms of $G$ and $c_{\rm O}$. We parametrize deviation from this degenerate limit by a parameter ${\hat α}$ such that the black hole spacetime is dS for ${\hat α} < 1$ and AdS…
A conformal coupling of the metric in the Jordan frame to the energy-momentum tensor, screens the scalar field gravitational coupling strength $G$ in modified gravity (MOG). The scalar field acquires a mass which depends on the local matter density: the scalar field particle is massive for the Sun and earth, where the density is high compared to low density environments in cosmology and astrophysics. Together with the screening of the vector field $ϕ_μ$, this guarantees that solar system tests of gravity are satisfied. The conformal metric is coupled to the electromagnetic matter field and ene…
We study the deflection of light (and the redshift, or integrated time delay) caused by the time-dependent gravitational field generated by a localized material source lying close to the line of sight. Our calculation explicitly takes into account the full, near-zone, plus intermediate-zone, plus wave-zone, retarded gravitational field. Contrary to several recent claims in the literature, we find that the deflections due to both the wave-zone 1/r gravitational wave and the intermediate-zone 1/r^2 retarded fields vanish exactly. The leading total time-dependent deflection caused by a localized …
Much of the information we hope to extract from the gravitational-waves signatures of compact binaries is only obtainable when we can accurately constrain the inclination of the source. In this paper, we discuss in detail a degeneracy between the measurement of the binary distance and inclination which limits our ability to accurately measure the inclination using gravitational waves alone. This degeneracy is exacerbated by the expected distribution of events in the universe, which leads us to prefer face-on systems at a greater distance. We use a simplified model that only considers the binar…
The observation of GW150914 indicated a new independent measurement of the luminosity distance of a gravitational wave event. In this paper, we constrain the anisotropy of the Universe by using gravitational wave events. We simulate hundreds of events of binary neutron star merging that may be observed by Einstein Telescope. Full simulation for producing process of gravitational wave data is employed. We find that 200 of binary neutron star merging in redshift $(0,1)$ observed by Einstein Telescope may constrain the anisotropy with an accuracy comparable to the result from Union2.1 supernovae.…
An explicit example is found showing how a modified theory of gravity can be constrained with the ringdown signals from merger of binary black holes. This has been made possible by the fact that the modified gravitational theory considered in this work has an exact rotating black hole solution and that the corresponding quasi-normal modes can be calculated. With these, we obtain the possible constraint that can be placed on the parameter describing the deviation of this particular alternative theory from general relativity by using the detection of the ringdown signals from binary black holes'…

Gravitational wave (GW) transients from binary neutron star (BNS) coalescences can, in principle, be subject to gravitational lensing thereby increasing the amplitude and signal-to-noise ratio. We estimate the rate of lensed BNS events resolvable by LIGO and Virgo and find that it is constrained by the current non-detection of a stochastic GW background. Following closely the formalism we developed (10.1103/PhysRevLett.125.141102) in the context of binary black hole lensing, we show that at current sensitivities the fraction of BNS coalescences with lensing magnifications $μ> 1.02$ is less tha…
In the present paper we derive strong constrains on scalarization in scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (sGB) gravity using observations of pulsars in close binary systems. Since scalarized neutron stars carry a nonzero scalar change, they emit scalar dipole radiation while inspiraling which speeds up the orbital decay. The observations support the conjecture that such radiation is either absent or very small for the observed binary pulsars. Using this, we determine the allowed range of parameters for sGB gravity. We also transfer the derived constraints to black holes in sGB gravity. It turns out that the m…
Gravitational waves (GWs) are subject to gravitational lensing in the same way as electromagnetic radiation. However, to date, no unequivocal observation of a lensed GW transient has been reported. Independently, GW observatories continue to search for the stochastic GW signal which is produced by many transient events at high redshift. We exploit a surprising connection between the lensing of individual transients and limits to the background radiation produced by the unresolved population of binary back hole mergers: we show that it constrains the fraction of individually resolvable lensed b…
General relativity predicts mass and spin growth of an inspiralling black hole due to an energy-momentum flux flowing through the black-hole horizon. The leading-order terms of this horizon flux introduce 2.5 and 3.5 post-Newtonian corrections to inspiral motions of binary black holes. The corrections may be measurable by gravitational waves detectors. Since the proper improvements to general relativity is still a mystery, it is possible that the true modified gravity theory introduces negligible direct corrections to the geodesics of test masses, while near horizon corrections are observable.…
Ten binary black-hole mergers have already been detected during the first two observing runs of advanced LIGO and Virgo, and many more are expected to be observed in the near future. This opens the possibility for gravitational-wave astronomy to better constrain the properties of black hole binaries, not only as single sources, but as a whole astrophysical population. In this paper, we address the problem of using gravitational-wave measurements to estimate the proportion of merging black holes produced either via isolated binaries or binaries evolving in young star clusters. To this end, we u…
The detection of ~50 coalescing compact binaries with the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors has allowed us to test general relativity, constrain merger rates, and look for evidence of tidal effects, compact object spins, higher waveform modes, and black hole ringdowns. An effect that has not yet been confidently detected is binary eccentricity, which might be present in a small fraction of binaries formed dynamically. Here we discuss general limits on eccentricity that can, in-principle, be placed on all types of compact object binaries by a detector operating at the design sensitivity of Adva…
Compact binary mergers are the strongest candidates for the progenitors of Short Gamma Ray Bursts (SGRBs). If a gravitational wave (GW) signal from the compact binary merger is observed in association with a SGRB, such a synergy can help us understand many interesting aspects of these bursts. We examine the accuracies with which a world wide network of gravitational wave interferometers would measure the inclination angle (the angle between the angular momentum axis of the binary and the observer's line of sight) of the binary. We compare the projected accuracies of GW detectors to measure the…
The Einstein Telescope (ET) is the future third generation gravitational wave detector consisting of three independent interferometers arranged in a triangular configuration, with the sensitivity large enough to be able to detect stellar mass black holes even beyond the redshift of 10. In this paper, we analyze the capabilities of ET as a standalone instrument and not part of a network. We show that the analysis of detection of binary coalescences in the three individual interferometers of the ET allow us to weakly constrain the sky location of the source. We present the analysis that leads to…
We construct numerical models of the newly discovered binary pulsar J0737-3039A, both with a fully relativistic, uniformly rotating, equilibrium code that handles arbitrary spins and in the relativistic, slow-rotation approximation. We compare results for a representative sample of viable nuclear equations of state (EOS) that span three, qualitatively different, classes of models for the description of nuclear matter. A future dynamical measurement of the neutron star's moment of inertia from pulsar timing data will impose significant constraints on the nuclear EOS. Even a moderately accurate …
The Einstein Telescope (ET), a future third-generation gravitational wave detector will have detection sensitivity for gravitational wave signals down to 1 Hz. This improved low-frequency sensitivity of the ET will allow the observation of low mass binaries for a longer period of time in the detection band before their merger. Because of an improved sensitivity as compared to current and advanced 2G detectors, the detection rate will also be greatly improved. Given the high detection rate of merging compact binaries with the ET, it will be a useful instrument to conduct population studies. In …

A space-based interferometer such as eLISA could observe few to few thousands progenitors of black hole binaries (BHBs) similar to those recently detected by Advanced LIGO. Gravitational radiation circularizes the orbit during inspiral, but some BHBs retain a measurable eccentricity at the low frequencies where eLISA is most sensitive. The eccentricity of a BHB carries precious information about its formation channel: BHBs formed in the field, in globular clusters, or close to a massive black hole (MBH) have distinct eccentricity distributions in the eLISA band. We generate mock eLISA observat…
In beyond-Horndeski theories of gravity, the Vainshtein screening mechanism might only be partially effective inside stellar objects. This results in a modification of the pressure balance equation inside stars, often characterized by a single parameter ($Υ$) in isotropic systems. We show how to constrain such theories of modified gravity, using tidal effects. We study such effects in cataclysmic variable star binaries and numerically obtain limits on the critical masses of the donor stars, below which they are tidally disrupted, by modeling them in beyond-Horndeski theories. This is contraste…
Gravitational waves perturb the paths of photons, impacting both the time-of-flight and the arrival direction of light from stars. Pulsar timing arrays can detect gravitational waves by measuring the variations in the time of flight of radio pulses, while astrometry missions such as Gaia can detect gravitational waves from the time-varying changes in the apparent position of a field of stars. Just as gravitational waves impart a characteristic correlation pattern in the arrival times of pulses from pulsars at different sky locations, the deflection of starlight is similarly correlated across t…
Gravitational waves (GWs) from binary black hole (BBH) mergers provide a new probe of massive-star evolution and the formation channels of binary compact objects. By coupling the growing sample of BBH systems with population synthesis models, we can begin to constrain the parameters of such models and glean unprecedented knowledge about the inherent physical processes that underpin binary stellar evolution. In this study, we apply a hierarchical Bayesian model to mass measurements from a synthetic GW sample to constrain the physical prescriptions in population models and the relative fraction …
A case study of GW190425 for classifying binary neutron star versus binary black hole mergers and constraining asymmetric dark matter with gravitational wave detectors
The direct discovery of gravitational waves has finally opened a new observational window on our Universe, suggesting that the population of coalescing binary black holes is larger than previously expected. These sources produce an unresolved background of gravitational waves, potentially observables by ground-based interferometers. In this paper we investigate how modified theories of gravity, modeled using the ppE formalism, affect the expected signal, and analyze the detectability of the resulting stochastic background by current and future ground-based interferometers. We find the constrai…
We investigate the pc-scale kinematics and kpc-scale radio morphology of the quasar PG 1302-102, which may harbour a sub-pc separation supermassive binary black hole system at its centre as inferred from optical variability. High-resolution radio interferometric measurements obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) in the Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments (MOJAVE) programme at 15 GHz at 20 epochs spanning 17 years were analysed to investigate the pc-scale radio structure. Archival observations with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 1.4 GHz and 5 GHz were o…
The initial separation of massive star binaries sets the timescale over which their compact remnants merge through the emission of gravitational waves. We show that the delay time distribution (DTD) of binary neutron stars or black holes can be inferred from the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB). If the DTD of a population is long, most of the mergers take place at low redshifts and the background would be rather quiet compared to a scenario in which the DTD is short leading to few individual detections at low redshift but a rather loud background. We show that different DTDs pre…
We study prospects of a method to constrain the inclination of a coalescing compact binary by detecting its gravitational waves associated with a three-dimensionally localized (direction and distance) short-hard gamma-ray burst. We take advantage of a synergy of these two observations, and our method can be applied even with a single interferometer. For a nearly face-on binary the inclination angle $I$ can be constrained in the range 1-1/SNR < cosI \le 1 (SNR: the signal to noise ratio of gravitational wave detection), provided that the error of the distance estimation is negligible. This meth…
LIGO and Virgo have recently observed a number of gravitational wave (GW) signals that are fully consistent with being emitted by binary black holes described by general relativity. However, there are theoretical proposals of exotic objects that can be massive and compact enough to be easily confused with black holes. Nevertheless, these objects differ from black holes in having nonzero tidal deformabilities, which can allow one to distinguish binaries containing such objects from binary black holes using GW observations. Using full Bayesian parameter estimation, we investigate the possibility…
Binary neutron star (BNS) post-merger gravitational-wave emission can occur in the aftermath of a BNS merger -- provided the system avoids prompt collapse to a black hole -- as a quasistable hypermassive remnant experiences quadrupolar oscillations and non-axisymmetric deformations. The post-merger gravitational-wave spectrum possesses a characteristic peak frequency that has been shown to be dependent on the binary chirp mass and the neutron star equation of state (EoS), rendering post-merger gravitational waves a powerful tool for constraining neutron star composition. Unfortunately, the BNS…
Determining the equation of state of matter at nuclear density and hence the structure of neutron stars has been a riddle for decades. We show how the imminent detection of gravitational waves from merging neutron star binaries can be used to solve this riddle. Using a large number of accurate numerical-relativity simulations of binaries with nuclear equations of state, we find that the postmerger emission is characterized by two distinct and robust spectral features. While the high-frequency peak has already been associated with the oscillations of the hypermassive neutron star produced by th…
Recently exploratory studies were performed on the possibility of constraining the neutron star equation of state (EOS) using signals from coalescing binary neutron stars, or neutron star-black hole systems, as they will be seen in upcoming advanced gravitational wave detectors such as Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. In particular, it was estimated to what extent the combined information from multiple detections would enable one to distinguish between different equations of state through hypothesis ranking or parameter estimation. Under the assumption of zero neutron star spins both in signa…

We parametrize a large class of corrections to general relativity which include a long-ranged gravitational scalar field as a dynamical degree of freedom in two ways: parametrizing the structure of the correction to the action, and parametrizing the scalar hair (multipole structure) that compact objects and black holes attain. The presence of this scalar hair violates the no-hair theorems present in general relativity, which leads to several important effects. The effects we consider are (i) the interaction between an isolated body and an external scalar field, (ii) the scalar multipole-multip…
Exploring the evolution of gravitational-wave emitters with efficient emulation: Constraining the origins of binary black holes using normalising flows
In modified gravity models that allow for additional non-compact spacetime dimensions, energy from gravitational waves can leak into these extra spacetime dimensions, leading to a reduction in the amplitude of the observed gravitational waves, and thus a source of potential systematics in the inferred luminosity distances to gravitational wave sources. Since binary black hole (BBH) mergers are standard sirens, we use the pair-instability supernova (PISNe) mass gap and its predicted features to determine a mass scale and thus be able to break the mass-redshift degeneracy. We simultaneously fit …
Gravitational-wave (GW) detections of binary neutron star coalescences play a crucial role to constrain the microscopic interaction of matter at ultrahigh density. Similarly, if boson stars exist in the universe their coalescence can be used to constrain the fundamental coupling constants of a scalar field theory. We develop the first coherent waveform model for the inspiral of boson stars with quartic interactions. The waveform includes coherently spin-induced quadrupolar and tidal-deformability contributions in terms of the masses and spins of the binary and of a single coupling constant of …
