In this paper we study efficiency of particle acceleration in the magnetospheres of stellar mass black holes. For this purpose we consider the linearized set of the Euler equation, continuity equation and Poisson equation respectively. After introducing the varying relativistic centrifugal force, we show that the charge separation undergoes the parametric instability, leading to generation of centrifugally excited Langmuir waves. It is shown that these waves, via the Langmuir collapse damp by means of the Landau damping, as a result energy transfers to particles accelerating them to energies of the order of $10^{16}$eV.
In this work we present a case that Microscopic Black Holes (MBH) of mass $10^{16}\ kg$ to $3 \cdot 10^{19}\ kg$ experience acceleration as they move within stellar material at low velocities. The accelerating forces are caused by the fact that a MBH moving through stellar material leaves a trail of hot rarified gas. The rarified gas behind a MBH exerts lower gravitational force on the MBH than the dense gas in front of it. The accelerating forces exceed the gravitational drag forces when MBH moves at Mach number $\mathcal{M}<\mathcal{M}_0$. The equilibrium Mach number $\mathcal{M}_0$ depends …
We investigate the process of particle acceleration at the termination shock that develops in the bubble excavated by winds of star clusters in the interstellar medium. We develop a theory of diffusive shock acceleration at such shock and we find that the maximum energy may reach the PeV region for very powerful clusters. We show how the maximum energy is limited by two different processes: the particle escape from the bubble boundary and the drop of energy gain for particles able to diffuse up to the center of the cluster. A crucial role in this problem is played by the dissipation of kinetic…
We consider the diffusive shock acceleration in interstellar bubbles created by powerful stellar winds of supernova progenitors. Under the moderate stellar wind magnetization the bubbles are filled by the strongly magnetized low density gas. It is shown that the maximum energy of particles accelerated in this environment can exceed the "knee" energy in the observable cosmic ray spectrum.
Particle acceleration by magnetic reconnection is now recognized as an important process in magnetically dominated regions of galactic and extragalactic black hole sources. This process helps to solve current puzzles specially related to the origin of the very high energy flare emission in these sources. In this review, we discuss this acceleration mechanism and show recent analytical studies and multidimensional numerical SRMHD and GRMHD (special and general relativistic magnetohydrodynamical) simulations with the injection of test particles, which help us to understand this process both in r…
The interaction between the strong winds in stellar colliding-wind binary (CWB) systems produces two shock fronts, delimiting the wind collision region (WCR). There, particles are expected to be accelerated mainly via diffusive shock acceleration (DSA). We investigate the injection and the acceleration of protons in typical CWB systems by means of Monte Carlo simulations, with both a test-particle approach and a non-linear method modelling a shock locally modified by the backreaction of the accelerated protons. We use magnetohydrodynamic simulations to determine the background plasma in the WC…
We study the force balance and resulting acceleration of gas in general relativity basing on simulations of accretion on a stellar-mass, non-rotating black hole. We compare properties of acceleration in an optically thin, radiatively inefficient disk, and in an optically thick, super-critical disk accreting at 10 times the Eddington rate. We study both the average forces acting at given location and forces acting on a gas parcel along its trajectory. We show that the acceleration is not a continuous process - in most cases gas is accelerated only in short-lasting episodes. We find that in the …
We consider particle acceleration in vacuum gaps in magnetospheres of black holes powered through Blandford-Znajek mechanism and embedded into radiatively-inefficient accretion flow (RIAF) environment. In such situation the gap height is limited by the onset of gamma-gamma pair production on the infrared photons originating from the RIAF. We numerically calculate acceleration and propagation of charged particles taking into account the detailed structure of electric and magnetic field in the gap and in the entire black hole magnetosphere, radiative energy losses and interactions of gamma rays …
Synchrotron radio emission from non-relativistic jets powered by massive protostars has been reported, indicating the presence of relativistic electrons and magnetic fields of strength ~0.3-5 mG. We study diffusive shock acceleration and magnetic field amplification in protostellar jets with speeds between 300 and 1500 km/s. We show that the magnetic field in the synchrotron emitter can be amplified by the non-resonant hybrid (Bell) instability excited by the cosmic-ray streaming. By combining the synchrotron data with basic theory of Bell instability we estimate the magnetic field in the sync…
The detection of rapidly variable gamma-ray emission in active galactic nuclei has generated renewed interest in magnetospheric particle acceleration and emission scenarios. In order to explore its potential, we study the possibility of steady gap acceleration around the null surface of a rotating black hole magnetosphere. We employ a simplified (1D) description along with the general relativistic expression of Gauss's law, and we assume that the gap is embedded in the radiation field of a radiatively inefficient accretion flow. The model is used to derive expressions for the radial distributi…
The `fundamental plane of black hole accretion' (FP), a relation between the radio luminosities ($L_R$), X-ray luminosities ($L_X$), and masses ($M_{BH}$) of hard/quiescent state black hole binaries and low-luminosity active galactic nuclei, suggests some aspects of black hole accretion may be scale invariant. However, key questions still exist concerning the relationship between the inflow/outflow behaviour in the `classic' hard state and quiescence, which may impact this scaling. We show that the broadband spectra of A0620-00 and~\sgra~(the least luminous stellar mass/supermassive black hole…
Short timescale variability is often associated with a black hole system. The consequence of an electromagnetic outflow suddenly generated near a Kerr black hole is considered assuming that it is described by a solution of a force-free field with a null electric current. We compute charged particle acceleration induced by the burst field. The interaction between the particle and the field is characterized by a large dimensionless number. We show that the particle is instantaneously accelerated to the relativistic regime by the field with a very large amplitude. The typical maximum energy attai…
The Cygnus Cocoon is the first gamma-ray superbubble powered by a massive stellar association, the OB2 association. It was postulated that the combined effects of the stellar winds of all the massive O-type stars of the OB2 association can accelerate the cosmic rays to PeV energy in the Cocoon. The conclusive proof of acceleration to PeV energy in the Cocoon will identify the stellar association as a PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, known as PeVatron. However, the Cocoon has been previously studied only up to 10 TeV. In this contribution, using 1343 days of High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) obse…
A stellar mass black hole can grow its mass noticeably through Bondi accretion, if it is embedded in an extremely dense and massive molecular cloud with slow motion with respect to the ambient medium for an extended period of time. This provides a novel, yet challenging channel for the formation of massive stellar-mass black holes. We discuss how this channel may account for the massive binary black hole merger system GW190521 as observed by LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave detectors as well as the claimed massive black hole candidate LB-1.
Strong gravity and magnetic fields are key ingredients that power processes of accretion and ejection near compact objects. While the particular mechanisms that operate here are still discussed, it seems that the presence of an ordered magnetic field is crucial for the acceleration and collimation of relativistic jets of electrically charged particles on superhorizon length scales. In this context, we further study the effect of a large-scale magnetic field on the dynamics of charged particles near a rotating black hole. We consider a scenario in which the initially neutral particles on regula…
Multi-frequency gravitational wave (GW) observations are useful probes of the formation processes of coalescing stellar-mass binary black holes (BBHs). We discuss the phase drift in the GW inspiral waveform of the merging BBH caused by its center-of-mass acceleration. The acceleration strongly depends on the location where a BBH forms within a galaxy, allowing observations of the early inspiral phase of LIGO-like BBH mergers by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) to test the formation mechanism. In particular, BBHs formed in dense nuclear star clusters or via compact accretion disks …
In the framework of a model based on the gravitational field of the Kerr black hole, we turn to investigate the kinematic behavior of extragalactic jets. We analytically calculate the observable velocities and accelerations along any geodesic. Then, by numerical calculations, we apply our results to a geodesic, typical of the M87 jet, and probe our results by confrontation to recent observations. A transition from non-relativistic to ultrarelativistic speeds at subparsec scale is highlighted. This transition comes sooner and more abruptly than in models based on magnetic paradigm, which indica…
Particle acceleration induced by fast magnetic reconnection may help to solve current puzzles related to the interpretation of the very high energy (VHE) and neutrino missions from AGNs and compact sources in general. Our general relativistic-MHD simulations of accretion disk-corona systems reveal the growth of turbulence driven by MHD instabilities that lead to the development of fast magnetic reconnection in the corona. In addition, our simulations of relativistic MHD jets reveal the formation of several sites of fast reconnection induced by current-driven kink turbulence. The injection of t…
In many astrophysical scenarios the charge of the black hole is often neglected due to unrealistically large values of the charge required for the Reissner-Nordström spacetime metric. However, black holes may possess small electric charge due to various selective accretion mechanisms. In this paper we investigate the effect of a small hypothetical electric charge of a Schwarzschild black hole on the ionization of a freely falling neutral particle and subsequent escape of the ionized particle from the black hole. We show that the energy of ionized particle can grow ultra-high and discuss distin…
The aim of the present article is to evaluate the motion of charged test particles in the vicinity of a near-extremal rotating black hole in the presence of magnetic fields. Euler-Lagrange motion equations and effective potential methods are used to characterize the motion out of the equatorial plane. Such approach is of peculiar significance if it is considered, e.g., accretion processes onto rotating black holes. In general investigations concerning accretion focus mostly on the simplest case of particles moving in the equatorial plane. Here it will be considered that particles initially mov…

The acceleration of LMXB 4U 1820-30 that derived from its orbital-period derivative $\dot P_{\rm b}$ was supposed to be the evidence for an Intermediate-mass Black Hole (IMBH) in the Galactic globular cluster (GC) NGC 6624. However, we find that the anomalous $\dot P_{\rm b}$ is mainly due to the gravitational wave emission, rather than the acceleration in cluster potential. Using the standard structure models of GCs, we simulate acceleration distributions for pulsars in the central region of the cluster. By fitting the acceleration of J1823-3021A with the simulated distribution profiles (maxi…
Hot, tenuous advection-dominated accretion flows around black holes are ideal sites for the Fermi acceleration of relativistic particles at standing shock waves in the accretion disc. Previous work has demonstrated that the shock-acceleration process can be efficient enough to power the observed, strong outflows in radio-loud active galaxies such as M87. However, the dynamical effect (back-reaction) on the flow, exerted by the pressure of the relativistic particles, has not been previously considered, and this effect can have a significant influence on the disc structure. We reexamine the prob…
Supermassive black holes are found in most galactic nuclei. A large fraction of these nuclei also contain a nuclear stellar cluster surrounding the black hole. Here we consider the idea that the nuclear stellar cluster formed first and that the supermassive black hole grew later. In particular we consider the merger of three stellar clusters to form a nuclear stellar cluster, where some of these clusters contain a single intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). In the cases where multiple clusters contain IMBHs, we discuss whether the black holes are likely to merge and whether such mergers are li…
Effect of a Weak Electromagnetic Field on Particle Acceleration by a Rotating Black Hole
Rev.
We discuss stationary and axisymmetric trans-magnetosonic outflows in the magnetosphere of a rotating black hole (BH). Ejected plasma from the plasma source located near the BH is accelerated far away to form a relativistic jet. In this study, the plasma acceleration efficiency and conversion of fluid energy from electromagnetic energy are considered by employing the trans-fast magnetosonic flow solution derived by Takahashi & Tomimatsu (2008). Considering the parameter dependence of magnetohydrodynamical flows, we search for the parameters of the trans-magnetosonic outflow solution to the rec…
The binary black hole mergers observed by LIGO-Virgo gravitational-wave detectors pose two major challenges: (i) how to produce these massive black holes from stellar processes; and (ii) how to bring them close enough to merge within the age of the universe? We derive a fundamental constraint relating the binary separation and the available stellar budget in the universe to produce the observed black hole mergers. We find that $\lesssim 14\%$ of the entire budget contributes to the observed merger rate of $(30 + 30)~\mathrm{M}_\odot$ black holes, if the separation is around the diameter of the…
Black hole spin will have a large impact on searches for gravitational waves with advanced detectors. While only a few stellar mass black hole spins have been measured using X-ray techniques, gravitational wave detectors have the capacity to greatly increase the statistics of black hole spin measurements. We show what we might learn from these measurements and how the black hole spin values are influenced by their formation channels.
We perform Monte Carlo simulations of transrelativistic shear acceleration dedicated to a jet-cocoon system of active galactic nuclei. A certain fraction of galactic cosmic rays in a halo is entrained, and sufficiently high-energy particles can be injected to the reacceleration process and further accelerated up to 100 EeV. We show that the shear reacceleration mechanism leads to a hard spectrum of escaping cosmic rays, $dL_E/dE\propto E^{-1}-E^0$, distinct from a conventional $E^{-2}$ spectrum. The supersolar abundance of ultrahigh-energy nuclei is achieved due to injections at TeV-PeV energi…
Acceleration of protons in the active galactic nuclei is considered. The largest energy is achieved by protons during centrifugal acceleration in the magnetosphere of the central machine. When the proton accelerated in the magnetosphere of a black hole approaches light cylinder surface, acceleration occurs mainly in the azimuthal direction, i.e. the acceleration is centrifugal. In this paper the acceleration of a proton having smaller synchrotron losses compared to the electron is considered. As a proton experiences the highest energy increase while accelerating near the light surface, a parti…
