We argue that the possibility of having infinite energy in the centre of mass frame of colliding particles is a generic property of rotating black holes. We suggest a general model-independent derivation valid for "dirty" black holes. The earlier observations for the Kerr or Kerr-Newman metrics are confirmed and generalized.
We derive the rotating black hole metric by appealing to ellipsoidal symmetry of space and a general guiding principle of incorporation of the Newtonian acceleration for massive and no acceleration for massless particles.
We study the collision of two geodesic particles in the accelerating and rotating black hole spacetime and probe the effects of the acceleration of black hole on the center-of-mass energy of the colliding particles and on the high-velocity collision belts. We find that the dependence of the center-of-mass energy on the acceleration in the near event-horizon collision is different from that in the near acceleration-horizon case. Moreover, the presence of the acceleration changes the shape and position of the high-velocity collision belts. Our results show that the acceleration of black holes br…
We study high energy charged particle collisions near the horizon in an electromagnetic field around a rotating black hole and reveal the condition of the fine-tuning to obtain arbitrarily large center-of-mass (CM) energy. We demonstrate that the CM energy can be arbitrarily large as the uniformly magnetized rotating black hole arbitrarily approaches maximal rotation under the situation that a charged particle plunges from the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) and collides with another particle near the horizon. Recently, Frolov [Phys. Rev. D 85, 024020 (2012)] proposed that the CM energy…
Nowadays, the effect of infinite energy in the centre of mass frame due to near-horizon collisions attracts much attention. We show generality of the effect combining two seemingly completely different approaches based on properties of a particle with respect to its local light cone and calculating its velocity in the locally nonrotaing frame directly. In doing so, we do not assume that particles move along geodesics. Usually, a particle reaches a horizon having the velocity equals that of light. However, there is also case of "critical" particles for which this is not so. It is just the pair o…
In many astrophysical scenarios the charge of the black hole is often neglected due to unrealistically large values of the charge required for the Reissner-Nordström spacetime metric. However, black holes may possess small electric charge due to various selective accretion mechanisms. In this paper we investigate the effect of a small hypothetical electric charge of a Schwarzschild black hole on the ionization of a freely falling neutral particle and subsequent escape of the ionized particle from the black hole. We show that the energy of ionized particle can grow ultra-high and discuss distin…
In this paper we consider rotating modified Hayward and rotating modified Bardeen black holes as particle accelerators. We investigate the center of mass energy of two colliding neutral particles with same rest masses falling from rest at infinity to near the horizons of the mentioned black holes. We investigate the range of the particle's angular momentum and the orbit of the particle. We also investigate the center of mass energy for extremal black hole.
The gravitational Poynting vector provides a mechanism for the transfer of gravitational energy to a system of falling objects. In the following we will show that the gravitational poynting vector together with the gravitational Larmor theorem also provides a mechanism to explain how massive bodies acquire rotational kinetic energy when external mechanical forces are applied on them.
The aim of the present article is to evaluate the motion of charged test particles in the vicinity of a near-extremal rotating black hole in the presence of magnetic fields. Euler-Lagrange motion equations and effective potential methods are used to characterize the motion out of the equatorial plane. Such approach is of peculiar significance if it is considered, e.g., accretion processes onto rotating black holes. In general investigations concerning accretion focus mostly on the simplest case of particles moving in the equatorial plane. Here it will be considered that particles initially mov…
We study the effect of ultra-high energy particles collisions near the black hole horizon (BSW effect) for two scenarios: when one of particle either (i) moves on a circular orbit or (ii) plunges from it towards the horizon. It is shown that such circular near-horizon orbits can exist for near-extremal black holes only. This includes the innermost stable orbit (ISCO), marginally bound orbit (MBO) and photon one (PhO). We consider generic "dirty" rotating black holes not specifying the metric and show that the energy in the centre of mass frame has the universal scaling dependence on the surfac…
We wish to carry forward to higher dimensions the insightful and novel method of obtaining the Kerr metric proposed by one of us [Gen. Relativ. Gravit. 45, 2383 (2013)] for deriving the Myers-Perry rotating black hole metric. We begin with a flat spacetime metric written in oblate spheroidal coordinates (ellipsoidal geometry) appropriate for the inclusion of rotation, and then introduce arbitrary functions to introduce a gravitational potential due to mass, which are then determined by requiring that a massless particle experiences no acceleration, while a massive particle feels Newtonian acce…
In this paper we calculate the center-of-mass energy of two colliding test particles near the rotating and non-rotating Horava-Lifshitz black hole. For the case of slowly rotating KS solution of Horava-Lifshitz black hole we compare our results with the case of Kerr black holes. We confirm the limited value of the center-of-mass energy for the static black holes and unlimited value of the center-of-mass energy for the rotating black holes. Numerically, we discuss temperature dependence of the center-of-mass energy on the black hole horizon. We obtain the critical angular momentum of particles.…
We obtain rotating black hole metric for higher dimensional Einstein and pure Lovelock gravity by employing two independent and well motivated methods. One is based on the principle of incorporation of Newtonian acceleration for timelike motion while no acceleration for null motion. The other is the well known Newman-Janis alogrithm that converts a static black hole into a rotating one through a complex transformation. It turns out that both the methods give the same metric which for Einst of the eour pure Lovelock metricein black hole is an exact vacuum solution while for pure Lovelock black …
In the last few decades, lots of universal relations between different global physical quantities of neutron stars have been proposed to constrain the unobservable or hard to be observed properties of neutron stars. But few of them are related to the gravitational redshift or the gravitational binding energy, especially for the fast rotating neutron stars. Here we will focus on the universal relations related to these two quantities. Based on 11 equations of state (EOSs) from the predictions of microscopic nuclear many-body theories for normal or hybrid neutron stars, we proposed a set of new …
Penrose process on rotational energy extraction of the black hole (BH) in the original non-projectable Hořava-Lifshitz gravity is studied. The strong dependence of the extracted energy from the special range of parameters of the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity, such as parameter $Λ_W$ and specific angular momentum $a$ has been found. Particle acceleration near the rotating BH in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity has been studied. It is shown that the fundamental parameter of the Hořava-Lifshitz gravity can impose limitation on the the energy of the accelerating particles preventing them from the infinite value.
We conjecture a universal upper bound to the entropy of a rotating system. The entropy bound follows from application of the generalized second law of thermodynamics to an idealized gedanken experiment in which an entropy-bearing rotating system falls into a black hole. This bound is stronger than the Bekenstein entropy bound for non-rotating systems.
In [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 101103 (2020)], a universal relation between corrections to entropy and extremality was proposed. The relation was also found to exactly hold for the four-dimensional charged AdS black hole. In this paper, we extend the study to the rotating BTZ and Kerr-AdS black holes when a constant correction to General Relativity is considered for the first time. The entropy and extremality bound are calculated, and they have a closely dependent behavior with the coupling parameter of the constant correction. We confirm the universal relation for the rotating AdS black holes. Fur…
It has recently been pointed out that, under certain conditions, the energy of particles accelerated by black holes in the center-of-mass frame can become arbitrarily high. In this paper, we study the collision of two particles in the case of four-dimensional charged nonrotating, extremal charged rotating and near-extremal charged rotating Kaluza-Klein black holes as well as the naked singularity case in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. We find that the center-of-mass energy for a pair of colliding particles is unlimited at the horizon of charged nonrotating Kaluza-Klein black holes, extremal …
We present explicit results for the product of all horizon areas for general rotating multi-charge black holes, both in asymptotically flat and asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in four and higher dimensions. The expressions are universal, and depend only on the quantized charges, quantized angular momenta and the cosmological constant. If the latter is also quantized these universal results may provide a "looking glass" for probing the microscopics of general black holes.
It is well known that a rotating superconductor produces a magnetic field proportional to its angular velocity. The authors conjectured earlier, that in addition to this so-called London moment, also a large gravitomagnetic field should appear to explain an apparent mass increase of Niobium Cooper-pairs. A similar field is predicted from Einstein's general relativity theory and the presently observed amount of dark energy in the universe. An experimental facility was designed and built to measure small acceleration fields as well as gravitomagnetic fields in the vicinity of a fast rotating and…
We investigate the horizon structure and ergosphere in a rotating Bardeen regular black hole, which has an additional parameter ($g$) due to magnetic charge, apart from mass ($M$) and rotation parameter ($a$). Interestingly, for each value of parameter $g$, there exist a critical rotation parameter ($a=a_{E}$), which corresponds to an extremal black hole with degenerate horizons, while for $a<a_{E}$ describes a non-extremal black hole with two horizons, and no black hole for $a>a_{E}$. We find that the extremal value $a_E$ is also influenced by the parameter $g$ and so is the ergosphere. While…
We construct rapidly rotating neutron star models in scalar-tensor theories with a massive scalar field. The fact that the scalar field has nonzero mass leads to very interesting results since the allowed range of values of the coupling parameters is significantly broadened. These deviations from pure general relativity can be very large for values of the parameters that are in agreement with the observations. The rapid rotation can magnify the differences several times compared to the static case. The universal relations between the normalized moment of inertia and quadrupole moment are also …
In the frame of the Kerr-Schild approach, we obtain a generalization of the Kerr solution to a nonstationary case corresponding to a rotating source moving with arbitrary acceleration. Similar to the Kerr solution, the solutions obtained have the geodesic and shear free principal null congruence. The current parameters of the solutions are determined by a complex retarded-time construction via a given complex worldline of source. The real part of the complex worldline defines the values of the boost and acceleration while the imaginary part controls the rotation. The acceleration of the source…
The differential acceleration between a rotating mechanical gyroscope and a non-rotating one is directly measured by using a double free-fall interferometer, and no apparent differential acceleration has been observed at the relative level of 2x10{-6}. It means that the equivalence principle is still valid for rotating extended bodies, i.e., the spin-gravity interaction between the extended bodies has not been observed at this level. Also, to the limit of our experimental sensitivity, there is no observed asymmetrical effect or anti-gravity of the rotating gyroscopes as reported by hayasaka et…
The Ernst method of removing nodal singularities from the charged C-metric representing uniformly accelerated black holes with mass $m$, charge $q$ and acceleration $A$ by "adding" an electric field $E$ is generalized. Utilizing the new form of the C-metric found recently, Ernst's simple "equilibrium" condition $mA=qE$ valid for small accelerations is generalized for arbitrary $A$. The nodal singularity is removed also in the case of accelerating and rotating charged black holes, and the corresponding equilibrium condition is determined.
In this paper, we show the existence of static and rotating universal horizons and black holes in gravitational theories with the broken Lorentz invariance. We pay particular attention on the ultraviolet regime, and show that universal horizons and black holes exist not only in low energy scales but also in the UV scales. This is realized by presenting various static and stationary exact solutions of the full theory of the projectable Hořava gravity with an extra U(1) symmetry in (2+1)-dimensions, which, by construction, is power-counting renormalizable.
Recently it was shown that slowly rotating neutron stars exhibit an interesting correlation between their moment of inertia $I$, their quadrupole moment $Q$, and their tidal deformation Love number $λ$ (the I-Love-Q relations), independently of the equation of state of the compact object. In the present work a similar, more general, universality is shown to hold true for all rotating neutron stars within General Relativity; the first four multipole moments of the neutron star are related in a way independent of the nuclear matter equation of state we assume. By exploiting this relation, we can…
The Gravity Advanced Package is an instrument composed of an electrostatic accelerometer called MicroSTAR and a rotating platform called Bias Rejection System. It aims at measuring with no bias the non-gravitational acceleration of a spacecraft. It is envisioned to be embarked on an interplanetary spacecraft as a tool to test the laws of gravitation. MicroSTAR is based on Onera's experience and inherits in orbit technology. The addition of the rotating platform is a technological upgrade which allows using an electrostatic accelerometer to make measurements at low frequencies with no bias. To …
In the modern era of abundant X-ray detections and the increasing momentum of gravitational waves astronomy, tests of General Relativity in strong field regime become increasingly feasible and their importance for probing gravity cannot be understated. To this end, we study the characteristics of slowly rotating topological neutron stars in the tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity following the static study of this new type of compact objects by two of the authors. We explore the moment of inertia and verify that universal relations known from General Relativity hold for this new class of c…
Boson stars represent a hypothetical exotic type of compact stellar object that may be observed from the gravitational signal of coalescing binaries in current and future GW detectors. In this work we show that the moment of inertia $I$, the (dimensionless) angular momentum $χ$ and the quadrupole moment $Q$ of rotating boson stars obey a universal relation, valid for a wide set of boson star models. Further, the obtained $I-χ-Q~$ relation clearly differs from its famous neutron star counterpart, providing us with an unequivocal diagnostic tool to distinguish boson stars from ordinary compact s…

We used a continuously rotating torsion balance instrument to measure the acceleration difference of beryllium and titanium test bodies towards sources at a variety of distances. Our result Delta a=(0.6+/-3.1)x10^-15 m/s^2 improves limits on equivalence-principle violations with ranges from 1 m to infinity by an order of magnitude. The Eoetvoes parameter is eta=(0.3+/-1.8)x10^-13. By analyzing our data for accelerations towards the center of the Milky Way we find equal attractions of Be and Ti towards galactic dark matter, yielding eta=(-4 +/- 7)x10^-5. Space-fixed differential accelerations i…
The low-temperature thermodynamics of near-extremal rotating black holes has recently been revisited to incorporate one-loop contributions that are dominant in this regime. We discuss these quantum corrections to the gravitational path integral for asymptotically Anti de-Sitter black holes in four and five dimensions. In four dimensions we explicitly consider Kerr-AdS$_4$, Kerr-Newman-AdS$_4$ and the rotating black hole in ${\cal N}=4$ gauged supergravity with two scalars and two electric charges turned on. In five dimensions we explicitly address the asymptotically flat Myers-Perry black hole…
We investigate the Keplerian (mass-shedding) sequence of rotating neutron stars. Twelve different equations of state are used to describe the nuclear structure. We find four fitting relations which connect the rotating frequency, mass and radius of stars in the mass-shedding limit to the mass and radius of stars in the static sequence. We show the breakdown of approximate relation for the Keplerian frequency derived by Lattimer and Prakash [Science, 304, 536, (2004)] and then we present a new, EOS-independent and more accurate relation. This relation fits the Keplerian frequency of rotating ne…
Dark matter phenomena in rotationally supported galaxies exhibit a characteristic acceleration scale of $g_\dagger \approx 1.2\times 10^{-10}$ m s$^{-2}$. Whether this acceleration is a manifestation of a universal scale, or merely an emergent property with an intrinsic scatter, has been debated in the literature. Here we investigate whether a universal acceleration scale exists in dispersion-supported galaxies using two uniform sets of integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data from SDSS-IV MaNGA and ATLAS$^{\rm 3D}$. We apply the spherical Jeans equation to 15 MaNGA and 4 ATLAS$^{\rm 3D}$ slow-r…
A binary neutron star merger produces a rapidly and differentially rotating compact remnant whose lifespan heavily affects the electromagnetic and gravitational emissions. Its stability depends on both the equation of state (EOS) and the rotation law and it is usually investigated through numerical simulations. Nevertheless, by means of a sufficient criterion for secular instability, equilibrium sequences can be used as a computationally inexpensive way to estimate the onset of dynamical instability, which, in general, is close to the secular one. This method works well for uniform rotation an…
We have investigated the motion of timelike particles along geodesic in the background of accelerating and rotating black hole spacetime. We confirmed that the chaos exists in the geodesic motion of the particles by Poincaré sections, the power spectrum, the fast Lyapunov exponent indicator and the bifurcation diagram. Moreover, we probe the effects of the acceleration and rotation parameters on the chaotic behavior of a timelike geodesic particle in the black hole spacetime. Our results show that the acceleration brings richer physics for the geodesic motion of particles.
Rotation causes an increase in a neutron star's mass and equatorial radius. The mass and radius depend sensitively on the unknown equation of state (EOS) of cold, dense matter. However, the increases in mass and radius due to rotation are almost independent of the EOS. The EOS independence leads to the idea of neutron star universality. In this paper, we compute sequences of rotating neutron stars with constant central density. We use a collection of randomly generated EOS to construct simple correction factors to the mass and radius computed from the equations of hydrostatic equilibrium for n…
We study the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a test particle around rapidly rotating neutron stars. Based on 12 different nuclear-matter equations of state (EOS), we find numerically two approximately EOS-insensitive universal relations that connect the radius and orbital frequency of the ISCO to the spin frequency $f$ and mass $M$ of rotating neutron stars. The relations are EOS-insensitive to about the 2% level for a large range of $Mf$. We also find that the universal relation for the ISCO radius agrees with the corresponding relation for the Kerr black hole to within 6% up to $Mf…
We discuss recent laboratory experiments with rotating superconductors and show that three so far unexplained experimentally observed effects (anomalous acceleration signals, anomalous gyroscope signals, Cooper pair mass excess) can be physically explained in terms of a possible interaction of dark energy with Cooper pairs. Our approach is based on a Ginzburg-Landau-like model of electromagnetic dark energy, where gravitationally active photons obtain mass in the superconductor. We show that this model can account simultaneously for the anomalous acceleration and anomalous gravitomagnetic fiel…
The basic principles of General Theory of Relativity historically have been tested in gedanken experiments in rotating frame of references. One of the key issues, which still evokes a lot of controversy, is the centrifugal acceleration. Machabeli & Rogava (1994) argued that centrifugal acceleration reverse direction for particles moving radially with relativistic velocities within a "bead on a wire" approximation. We show that this result is frame-dependent and reflects a special relativistic dilution of time (as correctly argued by de Felice (1995)) and is analogous to freezing of motion on t…
The rotating Ayón-Beato-García (ABG) black holes, apart from mass ($M$) and rotation parameter ($a$), has an additional charge $Q$ and encompassed the Kerr black hole as particular case when $Q=0$. We demonstrate the ergoregions of rotating ABG black holes depend on both rotation parameter $a$ and charge $Q$, and the area of the ergoregions increases with increase in the values of $Q$, when compared with the Kerr black hole and the extremal regular black hole changes with the value of $Q$. Ban{ã}dos, Silk and West (BSW) demonstrated that an extremal Kerr black hole can act as a particle accele…
We study how rapid rotation influences the relation between the normalized moment of inertia $\bar{I}$ and quadrupole moment $\bar{Q}$ for scalarized neutron stars. The questions one has to answer are whether the EOS universality is preserved in this regime and what are the deviations from general relativity. Our results show that the $\bar{I}-\bar{Q}$ relation is nearly EOS independent for scalarized rapidly rotating stars, but the differences with pure Einstein's theory increase compared to the slowly rotating case. In general, smaller negative values of the scalar field coupling parameters …
Hawking radiation of uncharged and charged scalars from accelerating and rotating black holes is studied. We calculate the tunneling probabilities of these particles from the rotation and acceleration horizons of these black holes. Using the tunneling method we recover the correct Hawking temperature as well.
We study magnetospheric structure surrounding rotating magnetized neutron star with nonvanishing NUT (Newman-Tamburino-Unti) parameter. For the simplicity of calculations Goldreich-Julian charge density is analyzed for the aligned neutron star with zero inclination between magnetic field, gravitomagnetic field and rotation axis. From the system of Maxwell equations in spacetime of slowly rotating NUT star, second-order differential equation for electrostatic potential is derived. Analytical solution of this equation indicates the general relativistic modification of an accelerating electric fi…
Understanding the mechanisms of particle acceleration from the vicinity of black holes poses a challenge. Electromagnetic effects are thought to be a prime suspect, but details still need an explanation. To this end, we study a three-dimensional structure of oblique magnetic fields near a rotating black hole in vacuum. It has been proposed that such a set-up can lead to efficient acceleration when plasma is injected near a magnetic null point. We focus our attention especially on the magnetic field in the immediate neighborhood of the magnetic null point, which was previously shown to occur in…

The gravitational back-reaction on a certain type of rigidly-rotating cosmic string loop, first discovered by Allen, Casper and Ottewill, is studied at the level of the weak-field approximation. The near-field metric perturbations are calculated and used to construct the self-acceleration vector of the loop. Although the acceleration vector is divergent at the two kink points on the loop, its net effect on the trajectory over a single oscillation period turns out to be finite. The net back-reaction on the loop over a single period is calculated using a method due to Quashnock and Spergel, and …
We discuss stationary and axisymmetric trans-magnetosonic outflows in the magnetosphere of a rotating black hole (BH). Ejected plasma from the plasma source located near the BH is accelerated far away to form a relativistic jet. In this study, the plasma acceleration efficiency and conversion of fluid energy from electromagnetic energy are considered by employing the trans-fast magnetosonic flow solution derived by Takahashi & Tomimatsu (2008). Considering the parameter dependence of magnetohydrodynamical flows, we search for the parameters of the trans-magnetosonic outflow solution to the rec…
