We study magnetospheric structure surrounding rotating magnetized neutron star with nonvanishing NUT (Newman-Tamburino-Unti) parameter. For the simplicity of calculations Goldreich-Julian charge density is analyzed for the aligned neutron star with zero inclination between magnetic field, gravitomagnetic field and rotation axis. From the system of Maxwell equations in spacetime of slowly rotating NUT star, second-order differential equation for electrostatic potential is derived. Analytical solution of this equation indicates the general relativistic modification of an accelerating electric field and charge density along the open field lines by the gravitomagnetic charge. The implication of this effect to the magnetospheric energy loss problem is underlined. In the second part of the paper we derive the equations of motion of test particles in magnetosphere of slowly rotating NUT star. Then we analyze particle motion in the polar cap and show that NUT parameter can significantly change conditions for particle acceleration.
Measurement of gravitomagnetic field is of fundamental importance as a test of general relativity. Here we present a new theoretical project for performing such a measurement based on detection of the electric field arising from the interplay between the gravitomagnetic and magnetic fields in the stationary axial-symmetric gravitational field of a slowly rotating massive body. Finally it is shown that precise magnetometers based on superconducting quantum interferometers could not be designed for measurement of the gravitomagnetically induced magnetic field in the cavity of a charged capacitor…
Results from general relativistic theoretical Monte Carlo computer simulations of Compton scattering and e-e+ pair production processes in the ergosphere of a supermassive (10^8 solar mass) rotating black hole are presented. Particles from an accretion disk fall into the ergosphere and scatter off particles that are in bound equatorially and nonequatorially confined orbits. The Penrose mechanism, in general, allows rotational energy of a Kerr black hole to be extracted by scattered particles escaping from the ergosphere to infinity (i.e., large distances from the black hole). The results of th…
In this paper we consider stationary force-free magnetosphere of an aligned rotator when plasma in the open field line region rotates differentially due to presence of a zone with the accelerating electric field in the polar cap of pulsar. We study the impact of differential rotation on the current density distribution in the magnetosphere. Using split-monopole approximation we obtain analytical expressions for physical parameters of differentially rotating magnetosphere. We find the range of admitted current density distributions under the requirement that the potential drop in the polar cap …
Here we briefly report on results of self-consistent numerical modeling of a differentially rotating force-free magnetosphere of an aligned rotator. We show that differential rotation of the open field line zone is significant for adjusting of the global structure of the magnetosphere to the current density flowing through the polar cap cascades. We argue that for most pulsars stationary cascades in the polar cap can not support stationary force-free configurations of the magnetosphere.
Just as a rotating magnetised neutron star has material pulled away from its surface to populate a magnetosphere, a similar process can occur as a result of neutron-star pulsations rather than rotation. This is of interest in connection with the overall study of neutron star oscillation modes but with a particular focus on the situation for magnetars. Following a previous Newtonian analysis of the production of a force-free magnetosphere in this way Timokhin et al. (2000), we present here a corresponding general-relativistic analysis. We give a derivation of the general relativistic Maxwell eq…
In the proton counterflow model of a pulsar magnetosphere that we have recently proposed, non-relativistic protons are supplied from the magnetosphere to flow toward the pulsar surface and screen an electric field above the polar cap region. In this Letter, we show that the proton counterflow is also suitable for the bunching of pair plasma. The two-stream instability is easily excited and can produce bunches of pairs with a relevant length scale to emit coherent curvature radiation.
We investigated the electrostatic charging behavior of submillimeter-sized dust particles located in Saturn's magnetosphere. The charging effects we considered included electron/ion capture from the magnetospheric plasma, electron/ion capture from the solar-wind plasma, the photoelectric effect from solar radiation, and secondary electron emission from energetic electrons. In our results, we show charging times and equilibrium potentials for particles located in different regions of Saturn's magnetosphere. We find that charging in Saturn's magnetosphere is not particularly sensitive to the dus…
We develop a model of ultra-high energy cosmic ray (UHECR) production via acceleration in a rotation-induced electric field in vacuum gaps in the magnetospheres of supermassive black holes (BH). We show that if the poloidal magnetic field near the BH horizon is misaligned with the BH rotation axis, charged particles, which initially spiral into the BH hole along the equatorial plane, penetrate into the regions above the BH "polar caps" and are ejected with high energies to infinity. We show that in such a model acceleration of protons near a BH of typical mass 3e8 solar masses is possible only…
We investigate a pair creation cascade in the magnetosphere of a rapidly rotating neutron star. We solve the set of the Poisson equation for the electro-static potential and the Boltzmann equations for electrons, positrons, and gamma-ray photons simultaneously. In this paper, we first examine the time-dependent nature of particle accelerators by solving the non-stationary Boltzmann equations on the two-dimensional poloidal plane in which both the rotational and magnetic axes reside. Evaluating the temperature of the heated polar cap surface, which is located near the magnetic pole, by the bomb…
For polar-cap models based on electromagnetic cascades induced by curvature radiation of beam particles we calculate broad-band high-energy spe ctra of pulsed emission expected for classical ($\sim 10^{12}\G$) and millisecond pulsars ($\sim 10^9\G$). The spectra are a superposition of curvature and synchrotron radiation components and most of their detailed features depend significantly on the magnetic field strength. The relations of expected pulsed luminosity \Lx (between 0.1 keV and 10 keV) as well as \Lg (above 100 keV) to the spin-down luminosity \edot are presented. We conclude that spec…
Rough estimates and upper limits on current and particle densities form the basis of most of the canonical pulsar models. Whereas the surface of the rotating neutron star is capable of supplying sufficient charges to provide a current that, given the polar cap potential, could easily fuel the observed energy loss processes, observational and theoretical constraints provide strict upper limits to the charge densities. The space charge of a current consisting solely of particles having only one sign creates a compensating potential that will make the maximum current dependent on potential and di…
We present, for the first time, the structure of the axisymmetric force-free magnetosphere of an aligned rotating magnetic dipole, in the case in which there exists a sufficiently large charge density (whose origin we do not question) to satisfy the ideal MHD condition, ${\bf E\cdot B}=0$, everywhere. The unique distribution of electric current along the open magnetic field lines which is required for the solution to be continuous and smooth is obtained numerically. With the geometry of the field lines thus determined we compute the dynamics of the associated MHD wind. The main result is that …
We propose a simple analytic model for the innermost (within the light cylinder of canonical radius) structure of open-magnetic-field lines of a rotating neutron star (NS) with relativistic outflow of charged particles (electrons/positrons) and arbitrary angle between the NS spin and magnetic axes. We present the self-consistent solution of Maxwell's equations for the magnetic field and electric current in the pair-starved regime where the density of electron-positron plasma generated above the pulsar polar cap is not sufficient to completely screen the accelerating electric field and thus est…
Formation of relativistic jets in the magnetosphere of collapsing stars is considered. These jets will be formed in the polar caps of magnetosphere of collapsing star, where the stellar magnetic field increases during the collapse and the charged particles are accelerated. The jets will generate non-thermal radiation. The analysis of dynamics and emission of particles in the stellar magnetosphere under collapse shows that collapsing stars can by powerful sources of relativistic jets.
We study on the self-consistency of the pulsar polar cap model, i.e., the problem of whether the field-aligned electric field is screened by electron-positron pairs that are injected beyond the pair production front. We solve the one-dimensional Poisson equation along a magnetic field line, both analytically and numerically, for a given current density incorporating effects of returning positrons, and we obtain the conditions for the electric-field screening. The formula which we obtained gives the screening distance and the return flux for given primary current density, field geometry and pai…
We explore the role of complex multipolar magnetic fields in determining physical processes near the surface of rotation powered pulsars. We model the actual magnetic field as the sum of global dipolar and star-centered multipolar fields. In configurations involving axially symmetric and uniform multipolar fields, 'neutral points' and 'neutral lines' exist close to the stellar surface. Also, the curvature radii of magnetic field lines near the stellar surface can never be smaller than the stellar radius, even for very high order multipoles. Consequently, such configurations are unable to provi…
The purpose of this paper is to suggest how detailed single-pulse observations of ``slow'' radio pulsars may be utilized to construct an empirical model for their emission. It links the observational synthesis developed in a series of papers by Rankin starting in the 1980s to the more recent empirical feedback model of Wright (2003a) by regarding the entire pulsar magnetosphere as a non-steady, non-linear interactive system with a natural built-in delay. It is argued that the enhanced role of the outer gap in such a system indicates an evolutionary link to younger pulsars, in which this region…
The number of pulsars with detected emission at X-ray and gamma-ray energies has been steadily growing, showing that beams of high-energy particles are commonly accelerated in pulsar magnetospheres, even though the location and number of acceleration sites remain unsettled. Acceleration near the magnetic poles, close to the polar cap surface or to higher altitudes in the slot gap along the last open field lines, involves an electric field component due to inertial-frame dragging. Acceleration can also take place in the outer magnetosphere where charge depletion due to global currents causes a …
We reconstruct a 3+1 formalism of general relativistic electromagnetism, and derive the equations of motion of charged particles in the pulsar magnetosphere, taking account of the inclination between the rotation axis and the magnetic axis. Apart from the previous works where space charge is evaluated by assuming the flow velocity being the light speed, we analyze particle motion in the polar cap, finding that gravity changes significantly its dynamics and the condition for acceleration.
We propose a new mechanism to screen the electric field in the pulsar polar cap. Previous studies have shown that if an electron beam from the stellar surface is accelerated to energies high enough to create electron-positron pairs, the required electric field parallel to the magnetic field lines is too strong to be screened out by the produced pairs. We argue here that if non-relativistic protons are supplied from the magnetosphere to flow towards the stellar surface, they can provide an anode to screen out such a strong electric field. Injected electron-positron pairs yield an asymmetry of t…
Electric currents j flow along the open magnetic field lines from the polar caps of neutron stars. Activity of a polar cap depends on the ratio α=j/cρ_GJ, where ρ_GJ is the corotation charge density. The customary assumption α\approx 1 is not supported by recent simulations of pulsar magnetospheres and we study polar caps with arbitrary α. We argue that no significant activity is generated on field lines with 0<α<1. Charges are extracted from the star and flow along such field lines with low energies. By contrast, if α>1 or α<0, a high voltage is generated, leading to unsteady e^+- discharge o…
Pulsar "standard model" of rotating magnetized conducting sphere surrounded by plasma is generalized in its essential parts for the case of oscillating star. Goldreich-Julian charge density, electromagnetic energy losses as well as polar cap scenario of particle accelerations are considered. Despite similarities, there are substantial differences between magnetospheres of rotating and oscillating stars. Distortion of particle acceleration mechanism in radiopulsars by neutron star oscillations, excited by a strong glitch, for example, is discussed.
Relativistic plasma masers operating on the anomalous cyclotron-Cherenkov resonance and the Cherenkov-drift resonance are capable of explaining the main observational characteristics of pulsar radio emission. Both electromagnetic instabilities are due to the interaction of the fast particles from the primary beam and from the tail of the secondary pairs distribution with the normal modes of a strongly magnetized one-dimensional electron-positron plasma. In a typical pulsar both resonances occur in the outer parts of magnetosphere .
We report on an analysis of the drifting subpulses of PSR B0320+39 that indicates a sudden step of ~180 degrees in subpulse phase near the centre of the pulse profile. The phase step, in combination with the attenuation of the periodic subpulse modulation at pulse longitudes near the step, suggests that the patterns arise from the addition of two superposed components of nearly opposite drift phase and differing longitudinal dependence. We argue that since there cannot be physical overlap of spark patterns on the polar cap, the drift components must be associated with a kind of ``multiple imag…
We have conducted a detailed analysis of the emission geometry of a handful of radio pulsars that have prominent, multiple-component profiles at meter wavelengths. From careful determination of the total number of emission components and their locations in pulse longitude, we find that all of the six pulsars show clear evidence for retardation and aberration effects in the conal emission beams. Using this information, coupled with a dipolar field geometry, we obtain estimates of the height and transverse location in the magnetosphere, for each of the emitting cones in these pulsars. These resu…
