Bosonic stars represent a hypothetical exotic type of compact stellar objects that could be observed from the gravitational signal of coalescing binaries in current and future gravitational wave detectors. There are two main families of bosonic stars, which depend on the nature that governs the particles that build them: Einstein-Klein-Gordon and Proca Stars. We study the multipolar structure for both families of rotating objects, using realistic potentials with the aim of finding possible universal relations and, thus, a method that allows us to distinguish between these and other compact objects in the gravitational wave paradigm. We also show how certain relevant observables can be obtained for these hypothetical but well-motivated astrophysical objects.
Boson stars represent a hypothetical exotic type of compact stellar object that may be observed from the gravitational signal of coalescing binaries in current and future GW detectors. In this work we show that the moment of inertia $I$, the (dimensionless) angular momentum $χ$ and the quadrupole moment $Q$ of rotating boson stars obey a universal relation, valid for a wide set of boson star models. Further, the obtained $I-χ-Q~$ relation clearly differs from its famous neutron star counterpart, providing us with an unequivocal diagnostic tool to distinguish boson stars from ordinary compact s…
Solutions for rotating boson stars in (2+1) dimensional gravity with a negative cosmological constant are obtained numerically. The mass, particle number, and radius of the (2+1) dimensional rotating boson star are shown. Consequently we find the region where the stable boson star can exist.
In [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 101103 (2020)], a universal relation between corrections to entropy and extremality was proposed. The relation was also found to exactly hold for the four-dimensional charged AdS black hole. In this paper, we extend the study to the rotating BTZ and Kerr-AdS black holes when a constant correction to General Relativity is considered for the first time. The entropy and extremality bound are calculated, and they have a closely dependent behavior with the coupling parameter of the constant correction. We confirm the universal relation for the rotating AdS black holes. Fur…
We study rotating boson stars in five spacetime dimensions. The boson fields consist of a complex doublet scalar field. Considering boson stars rotating in two orthogonal planes with both angular momenta of equal magnitude, a special ansatz for the boson field and the metric allows for solutions with nontrivial dependence on the radial coordinate only. The charge of the scalar field equals the sum of the angular momenta. The rotating boson stars are globally regular and asymptotically flat. For our choice of a sixtic potential the rotating boson star solutions possess a flat spacetime limit. W…
We present explicit results for the product of all horizon areas for general rotating multi-charge black holes, both in asymptotically flat and asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes in four and higher dimensions. The expressions are universal, and depend only on the quantized charges, quantized angular momenta and the cosmological constant. If the latter is also quantized these universal results may provide a "looking glass" for probing the microscopics of general black holes.
It has been shown that scalar fields can form gravitationally bound compact objects called boson stars. In this study, we analyze boson star configurations where the scalar fields contain a small amount of angular momentum and find two new classes of solutions. In the first case all particles are in the same slowly rotating state and in the second case the majority of particles are in the non-rotating ground state and a small number of particles are in an excited rotating state. In both cases, we solve the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii-Poisson equations that describe the profile of these compact…
In this paper, we construct rotating boson stars composed of the coexisting states of two scalar fields, including the ground and first excited states. We show the coexisting phase with both the ground and first excited states for rotating multistate boson stars. In contrast to the solutions of the nodeless boson stars, the rotating boson stars with two states have two types of nodes, including the $^1S^2S$ state and the $^1S^2P$ state. Moreover, we explore the properties of the mass $M$ of rotating boson stars with two states as a function of the synchronized frequency $ω$, as well as the non…
We study the holographic duals of bosonic and fermionic fields and compute their Quasinormal Frequencies (QNF) by exploiting that they are massive charged fields in $\mathrm{AdS_2 \times \mathcal{K}}$. In particular, we assess the stability of the scalar and fermionic operators in Myers-Perry's black holes with equal angular momenta. We compute the central charge and the Hawking-entropy and introduce extremality parameters to determine the properties of the dual CFT. Then, we briefly discuss how detection of Spin-2 fields can pave the way for more deep understanding of the holographic principl…
In this paper, we study rotating boson stars in the large coupling limit as well as in the Newtonian limit. We investigate the equilibrium solutions in four and five dimensions by adopting some analytical approximations. We show that the relations among the radius, angular momentum, Newtonian energy and quadrupole moment (for the four-dimensional solution) of the boson star can be qualitatively realized for the minimal number of boson star parameters.
We conjecture a universal upper bound to the entropy of a rotating system. The entropy bound follows from application of the generalized second law of thermodynamics to an idealized gedanken experiment in which an entropy-bearing rotating system falls into a black hole. This bound is stronger than the Bekenstein entropy bound for non-rotating systems.
Bargmann-Wigner equations are formulated to represent bosonic fields in terms of fermionic fields in curved spacetime. The superradiance phenomena of bosons and fermions in rotating black hole spacetime are studied in the Bargmann-Wigner formulation. As a result of the consistent description between scalar bosons and spinor fermions, superradiance phenomena of the type of positive frequency $(0<ω)$ and negative momentum near horizon $(p_{H}<0)$ are shown not to occur.
We construct axially symmetric, rotating boson stars with positive and negative parity. Their flat space limits represent spinning Q-balls. $Q$-balls and boson stars exist only in a limited frequency range. The coupling to gravity gives rise to a spiral-like frequency dependence of the mass and charge of boson stars. We analyze the properties of these solutions. In particular, we discuss the presence of ergoregions in boson stars, and determine their domains of existence.
We consider axially symmetric, rotating boson stars. Their flat space limits represent spinning Q-balls. We discuss their properties and determine their domain of existence. Q-balls and boson stars are stationary solutions and exist only in a limited frequency range. The coupling to gravity gives rise to a spiral-like frequency dependence of the boson stars. We address the flat space limit and the limit of strong gravitational coupling. For comparison we also determine the properties of spherically symmetric Q-balls and boson stars.
We consider rotating boson star solutions in a three-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime and investigate the influence of the rotation on their properties. The mass and angular momentum of these configurations are computed by using the counterterm method. No regular solution is found in the limit of vanishing cosmological constant.
We study the stability of rotating scalar boson stars, comparing those made from a simple massive complex scalar (referred to as mini boson stars), to those with several different types of nonlinear interactions. To that end, we numerically evolve the nonlinear Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations in 3D, beginning with stationary boson star solutions. We show that the linear, non-axisymmetric instability found in mini boson stars with azimuthal number $m=1$ persists across the entire parameter space for these stars, though the timescale diverges in the Newtonian limit. Therefore, any boson star wit…
We construct and study rotating axion boson stars (RABSs). These are the spinning generalisations of the spherical gravitating solitons recently introduced in arXiv:1909.05515. RABSs are asymptotically flat, stationary, axially symmetric, everywhere regular solutions of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon theory, in the presence of a periodic scalar potential arising in models of axion-like particles. The potential is characterised by two parameters: the mass of the scalar field $m_a$ and the decay constant $f_a$. We present an overview of the solution space, for different values of $f_a$, and analyse s…
We have developed a highly accurate numerical code capable of solving the coupled Einstein-Klein-Gordon system, in order to construct rotating boson stars in general relativity. Free fields and self-interacting fields, with quartic and sextic potentials, are considered. In particular, we present the first numerical solutions of rotating boson stars with rotational quantum number $k=3$ and $k=4$, as well as the first determination of the maximum mass of free-field boson stars with $k=2$. We have also investigated timelike geodesics in the spacetime generated by a rotating boson star for $k=1$, …
In this work we present full sets of solutions for rotating charged boson stars with different coupling values. By adopting local comoving coordinates, we are able to find expressions for the effective hydrodynamic quantities of the fluids as seen by this class of observers. We show that not only is the energy density non zero at the center, for the uncharged case it has a local maximum at the core from which it decreases until the point of local minimum where its variation is discontinuous. For the first time, it is reported how rotating boson stars, charged and uncharged, are completely anis…
We argue that the possibility of having infinite energy in the centre of mass frame of colliding particles is a generic property of rotating black holes. We suggest a general model-independent derivation valid for "dirty" black holes. The earlier observations for the Kerr or Kerr-Newman metrics are confirmed and generalized.
We show that minimal boson stars, i.e. boson stars made out of scalar fields without self-interaction, are always classically unstable in 5 space-time dimensions. This is true for the non-rotating as well as rotating case with two equal angular momenta and in both Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravity, respectively, and contrasts with the 4-dimensional case, where classically stable minimal boson stars exist. We also discuss the appearance of ergoregions for rotating boson stars with two equal angular momenta. While rotating black holes typically possess an ergoregion, rotating compact objects wit…
Boson Stars are stationary, axially symmetric solutions of a complex scalar field theory coupled to gravity. Recently, multi-solitonic configurations interpreted as static chains of multiple Boson Stars bound by gravity and carrying no angular momentum were reported. We propose to generalize those solutions to the stationary case by constructing chains of rotating Boson Stars and analyze their properties. The non-linear elliptic field equations are solved using the finite element method. We find that chains with an even number of constituents exhibit the same spiral-like frequency dependence o…
A self-interacting SU(2)-doublet of complex scalar fields, minimally coupled to Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity is considered in five space-time dimensions. The classical equations admit two families of solitons corresponding to spinning and non-spinning bosons stars. The generic solutions are constructed numerically and agree with exact results that are available in special limits of the parameters. The pattern of the boson stars is shown to be qualitatively affected by the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant.
We consider four-dimensional wormholes immersed in bosonic matter. While their existence is based on the presence of a phantom field, many of their interesting physical properties are bestowed upon them by an ordinary complex scalar field, which carries only a mass term, but no self-interactions. For instance, the rotation of the scalar field induces a rotation of the throat as well. Moreover, the bosonic matter need not be symmetrically distributed in both asymptotically flat regions, leading to symmetric and asymmetric rotating wormhole spacetimes. The presence of the rotating matter also al…
In this paper, we show the existence of static and rotating universal horizons and black holes in gravitational theories with the broken Lorentz invariance. We pay particular attention on the ultraviolet regime, and show that universal horizons and black holes exist not only in low energy scales but also in the UV scales. This is realized by presenting various static and stationary exact solutions of the full theory of the projectable Hořava gravity with an extra U(1) symmetry in (2+1)-dimensions, which, by construction, is power-counting renormalizable.
We investigate the effects ultralight bosonic field dark matter may have on the dynamics of unstable differentially-rotating neutron stars prone to the bar-mode instability. To this aim we perform numerical simulations in general relativity of rotating neutron stars accreting an initial spherically symmetric bosonic field cloud, solving the Einstein-(complex, massive) Klein-Gordon-Euler and the Einstein-(complex) Proca-Euler systems. We find that the presence of the bosonic field can critically modify the development of the bar-mode instability of neutron stars, depending on the total mass of …
Relativistic prescription is used to study the slow rotation of stars composed by self-gravitating bosons and fermions (fermions may be considered as neutrons). Previous results demand that purely boson stars are unable to display slow rotation, if one uses relativistic prescription with classical scalar fields. In contrast to this, the present work shows that a combined boson-neutron star in its ground-state can rotate. Their structure and stability are analysed under slow rotation approximations.
In this paper, we study the circular orbit of the spinning test particle in the background of a rotating boson star. Using the pole-dipole approximation and neglecting the back-reaction of the spinning test particle on the spacetime, the equation of motion of the spinning test particle is described by the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equation. We solve this equation under the Tulczyjew spin-supplementary condition and obtain the four-momentum and four-velocity of the spinning test particle. Quite different from the spinless particle, the effective potential of the spinning particle with zero orb…
In the last few decades, lots of universal relations between different global physical quantities of neutron stars have been proposed to constrain the unobservable or hard to be observed properties of neutron stars. But few of them are related to the gravitational redshift or the gravitational binding energy, especially for the fast rotating neutron stars. Here we will focus on the universal relations related to these two quantities. Based on 11 equations of state (EOSs) from the predictions of microscopic nuclear many-body theories for normal or hybrid neutron stars, we proposed a set of new …
We investigate the properties of interacting Q-balls and boson stars that sit on top of each other in great detail. The model that describes these solutions is essentially a (gravitating) two-scalar field model where both scalar fields are complex. We construct interacting Q-balls or boson stars with arbitrarily small charges but finite mass. We observe that in the interacting case - where the interaction can be either due to the potential or due to gravity - two types of solutions exist for equal frequencies: one for which the two scalar fields are equal, but also one for which the two scalar…
The noninertial effect of rotating frames on the quantum dynamics of scalar bosons embedded in the background of a cosmic string is considered. In this work, scalar bosons are described by the Duffin--Kemmer--Petiau (DKP) formalism. Considering the DKP oscillator in this background the combined effects of a rotating frames and cosmic string on the equation of motion, energy spectrum and DKP spinor are analyzed and discussed in detail. Additionally, the effect of rotating frames on the scalar bosons localization is studied.

We study the electromagnetic field equation along with the WKB approximation. The boson tunneling phenomenon from charged rotating black ring(CRBR) is analyzed. It is examined that reserve radiation consistent with CRBR can be computed in general by neglecting back reaction and self-gravitational of the radiated boson particle. The calculated temperature depends upon quantum gravity and CRBR geometry. We also examine the corrected tunneling rate/probability of boson particles by assuming charge as well as energy conservation laws and the quantum gravity. Furthermore, we study the graphical beh…
Solitonic boson stars are stable objects made of a complex scalar field with a compactness that can reach values comparable to that of neutron stars. A recent study of the collision of identical boson stars produced only non-rotating boson stars or black holes, suggesting that rotating boson stars may not form from binary mergers. Here we extend this study to include an analysis of the gravitational waves radiated during the coalescence of such a binary, which is crucial to distinguish these events from other binaries with LIGO and Virgo observations. Our studies reveal that the remnant's grav…
Direct detection of gravitational waves from several compact binary coalescences has ushered in a new era of astronomy. It has opened up the possibility of detecting ultralight bosons, predicted by extensions of the Standard Model, from their gravitational signatures. This is of particular interest as some of these hypothetical particles could be components of dark matter that are expected to interact very weakly with Standard Model particles, if at all, but they would gravitate as usual. Ultralight bosons can trigger superradiant instabilities of rotating black holes and form bosonic clouds t…
We construct rapidly rotating neutron star models in scalar-tensor theories with a massive scalar field. The fact that the scalar field has nonzero mass leads to very interesting results since the allowed range of values of the coupling parameters is significantly broadened. These deviations from pure general relativity can be very large for values of the parameters that are in agreement with the observations. The rapid rotation can magnify the differences several times compared to the static case. The universal relations between the normalized moment of inertia and quadrupole moment are also …
It was shown recently, that normalized relations between the moment of inertia (I), the quadrupole moment (Q) and the tidal deformability (Love number) exist and for slowly-rotating neutron stars they are almost independent of the equation of state (EOS). We extend the computation of the I-Q relation to models rotating up to the mass-shedding limit and show that the universality of the relations is lost. With increasing rotation rate, the normalized I-Q relation departs significantly from its slow-rotation limit deviating up to 40% for neutron stars and up to 75% for strange stars. The deviati…
Recently it was shown that slowly rotating neutron stars exhibit an interesting correlation between their moment of inertia $I$, their quadrupole moment $Q$, and their tidal deformation Love number $λ$ (the I-Love-Q relations), independently of the equation of state of the compact object. In the present work a similar, more general, universality is shown to hold true for all rotating neutron stars within General Relativity; the first four multipole moments of the neutron star are related in a way independent of the nuclear matter equation of state we assume. By exploiting this relation, we can…
In the modern era of abundant X-ray detections and the increasing momentum of gravitational waves astronomy, tests of General Relativity in strong field regime become increasingly feasible and their importance for probing gravity cannot be understated. To this end, we study the characteristics of slowly rotating topological neutron stars in the tensor-multi-scalar theories of gravity following the static study of this new type of compact objects by two of the authors. We explore the moment of inertia and verify that universal relations known from General Relativity hold for this new class of c…
This work is devoted to the study of photon trajectories around rotating boson stars. The basic properties of boson star models are given with a particular emphasis on the high compactness those objects can have. Using an effective potential method, circular orbits of photons around rotating boson stars are then obtained, at least for relativistic enough configurations. A particular class of light rings, in which the photons are at rest on a stable orbit, is exhibited. By this one means that the associated worldline is collinear to the Killing vector corresponding to the asymptotic time transl…
We study Rotating Boson Star initial data for Numerical Relativity as previously considered by Yoshida and Eriguchi, Lai (arXiv:gr-qc/0410040v2), and Grandclement, Somé and Gourgoulhon (arXiv:1405.4837v3). We use a 3 + 1 decomposition as presented by Gourgoulhon (arXiv:1003.5015v2) and Alcubierre, adapted to an axisymmetric quasi-isotropic spacetime with added regularization at the axis following work by Ruíz, Alcubierre and Núñez (arXiv:0706.0923v2) and Torres. The Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations result in a system of six-coupled, elliptic, nonlinear equations with an added unknown for the sc…
