We show that minimal boson stars, i.e. boson stars made out of scalar fields without self-interaction, are always classically unstable in 5 space-time dimensions. This is true for the non-rotating as well as rotating case with two equal angular momenta and in both Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravity, respectively, and contrasts with the 4-dimensional case, where classically stable minimal boson stars exist. We also discuss the appearance of ergoregions for rotating boson stars with two equal angular momenta. While rotating black holes typically possess an ergoregion, rotating compact objects without horizons such as boson stars have ergoregions only in a limited range of the parameter space. In this paper, we show for which values of the parameters these ergoregions appear and compare this with the case of standard Einstein gravity. We also point out that the interplay between Gauss-Bonnet gravity and rotation puts constraints on the behaviour of the space-time close to the rotation axis.
It has been known classically that a star with an ergoregion but no event horizon is unstable to the emission of scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational waves. This classical ergoregion instability is characterized by complex frequency modes. We show how to canonically quantize a neutral scalar field in the presence of such unstable modes by considering a simple model for a rapidly rotating star. Some of interesting results is that there exists a physically meaningful mode decomposition including unstable normal mode solutions whose representation turns out to be a non-Fock-like Hilbert spac…
Gravitational-wave astronomy can give us access to the structure of black holes, potentially probing microscopic or even Planckian corrections at the horizon scale, as those predicted by some quantum-gravity models of exotic compact objects. A generic feature of these models is the replacement of the horizon by a reflective surface. Objects with these properties are prone to the so-called ergoregion instability when they spin sufficiently fast. We investigate in detail a simple model consisting of scalar perturbations of a Kerr geometry with a reflective surface near the horizon. The instabili…
Spinning horizonless compact objects may be unstable against an 'ergoregion instability'. We investigate this mechanism for electromagnetic perturbations of ultracompact Kerr-like objects with a reflecting surface, extending previous (numerical and analytical) work limited to the scalar case. We derive an analytical result for the frequency and the instability time scale of unstable modes which is valid at small frequencies. We argue that our analysis can be directly extended to gravitational perturbations of exotic compact objects in the black-hole limit. The instability for electromagnetic a…
Recently certain non-supersymmetric solutions of type IIb supergravity were constructed [hep-th/0504181], which are everywhere smooth, have no horizons and are thought to describe certain non-BPS microstates of the D1-D5 system. We demonstrate that these solutions are all classically unstable. The instability is a generic feature of horizonless geometries with an ergoregion. We consider the endpoint of this instability and argue that the solutions decay to supersymmetric configurations. We also comment on the implications of the ergoregion instability for Mathur's `fuzzball' proposal.
In the context of higher dimensional braneworld scenario, we have argued that the occurrence of horizonless exotic compact objects, as an alternative to classical black holes, are more natural. These exotic compact objects carry a distinctive signature of the higher dimension, namely a tidal charge parameter, inherited from the projection of the higher dimensional Weyl tensor onto the four dimensional spacetime we live in. Due to the absence of any horizon, rotating exotic compact objects are often unstable because of superradiance. Interestingly, these higher dimensional exotic compact object…
We construct rotating boson stars in (4+1)-dimensional asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space-time (aAdS) with two equal angular momenta that are composed out of a massive and self-interacting scalar field. These solutions possess a single Killing vector field. We construct explicit solutions of the equations in the case of a fixed AdS background and vanishing self-coupling of the scalar field. These are the generalizations of the oscillons discussed in the literature previously now taking the mass of the scalar field into account. We study the evolution of the spectrum of massive oscillons when …
We study angularly excited as well as interacting non-topological solitons, so-called Q-balls and their gravitating counterparts, so-called boson stars in 3+1 dimensions. Q-balls and boson stars carry a non-vanishing Noether charge and arise as solutions of complex scalar field models in a flat space-time background and coupled minimally to gravity, respectively. We present examples of interacting Q-balls that arise due to angular excitations, which are closely related to the spherical harmonics. We also construct explicit examples of rotating boson stars that interact with non-rotating boson …
Ultralight bosons, as important candidates of dark matter, can condense around spinning black holes (BHs) to form long-lived ``boson clouds'' due to superradiance instability. The boson-BH system can be observed through gravitational wave detection and may become a new window to find traces of ultralight bosons. In this letter we explore the effects on the superradiant instability of BHs from the near-horizon microstructure. By introducing the reflection parameter near a BH horizon, we derived analytical results on the corrections to both energy levels of bosonic cloud and its characteristic f…
We construct and study rotating axion boson stars (RABSs). These are the spinning generalisations of the spherical gravitating solitons recently introduced in arXiv:1909.05515. RABSs are asymptotically flat, stationary, axially symmetric, everywhere regular solutions of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon theory, in the presence of a periodic scalar potential arising in models of axion-like particles. The potential is characterised by two parameters: the mass of the scalar field $m_a$ and the decay constant $f_a$. We present an overview of the solution space, for different values of $f_a$, and analyse s…
We construct boson stars in global Anti de Sitter (AdS) space and study their stability. Linear perturbation results suggest that the ground state along with the first three excited state boson stars are stable. We evolve some of these solutions and study their nonlinear stability in light of recent work \cite{Bizon:2011gg} arguing that a weakly turbulent instability drives scalar perturbations of AdS to black hole formation. However evolutions suggest that boson stars are nonlinearly stable and immune to the instability for sufficiently small perturbation. Furthermore, these studies find othe…
Vortons can be viewed as (flat space-) field theory analogs of black rings in general relativity. They are made from loops of vortices, being sustained against collapse by the centrifugal force. In this work we discuss such configurations in the global version of Witten's U(1)xU(1) theory. We first consider solutions in a flat spacetime background and show their non-uniqueness. The inclusion of gravity leads to new features. In particular, an ergoregion can occur. Also, similar to boson stars, we show that the vortons exist only in a limited frequency range. The coupling to gravity gives rise …
Many properties of black holes can be studied using acoustic analogues in the laboratory through the propagation of sound waves. We investigate in detail sound wave propagation in a rotating acoustic (2+1)-dimensional black hole, which corresponds to the ``draining bathtub'' fluid flow. We compute the quasinormal mode frequencies of this system and discuss late-time power-law tails. Due to the presence of an ergoregion, waves in a rotating acoustic black hole can be superradiantly amplified. We compute superradiant reflection coefficients and instability timescales for the acoustic black hole …
Instabilities of two dimensional (1+1) de Sitter space induced by interacting fields are studied. As for the case of flat Minkowski space, several interacting fermion models can be translated into free boson ones and vice versa. It is found that interacting fermion theories do not lead to any instabilities, while the interacting bosonic sine-Gordon model does lead to a breakdown of de Sitter symmetry and to the vanishing of the vacuum expectation value of the S matrix.
We study the stability of rotating scalar boson stars, comparing those made from a simple massive complex scalar (referred to as mini boson stars), to those with several different types of nonlinear interactions. To that end, we numerically evolve the nonlinear Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations in 3D, beginning with stationary boson star solutions. We show that the linear, non-axisymmetric instability found in mini boson stars with azimuthal number $m=1$ persists across the entire parameter space for these stars, though the timescale diverges in the Newtonian limit. Therefore, any boson star wit…
Viable alternatives to astrophysical black holes include hyper-compact objects without horizon, such as gravastars, boson stars, wormholes and superspinars. The authors have recently shown that typical rapidly-spinning gravastars and boson stars develop a strong instability. That analysis is extended in this paper to a wide class of horizonless objects with approximate Kerr-like geometry. A detailed investigation of wormholes and superspinars is presented, using plausible models and mirror boundary conditions at the surface. Like gravastars and boson stars, these objects are unstable with very…
We comment on asymptotically AdS "large-$σ$" initial data, studied in Phys. Rev. D87, 123006 (2013) [arXiv:1304.4166], that are immune to turbulent instability.
Exotic compact objects with physical surfaces a Planckian distance away from where the horizon would have been are inspired in quantum gravity. Most of these objects are defined by a classical spacetime metric, such as boson stars, gravastars and wormholes. We show that these classical objects are gravitationally unstable because accretion of ordinary and dark matter, and gravitational waves forces them to collapse to a black hole by the Hoop conjecture. To avoid collapse, their surface must be a macroscopic distance away from the horizon or they must violate the null energy condition.
Nonequilibrium instabilities are known to lead to exponential amplification of boson occupation numbers for low momentum modes on time scales much shorter than the asymptotic thermal equilibration time. We show for Yukawa-type interactions that this growth induces very efficient fermion production, which proceeds with the maximum primary boson growth rate. The description is based on a 1/N expansion of the 2PI effective action to NLO including boson-fermion loops, which are crucial to observe this phenomenon. For long enough amplification in the boson sector, fermion production terminates when…
We perform numerical evolutions of the fully non-linear Einstein-(complex, massive)Klein-Gordon and Einstein-(complex)Proca systems, to assess the formation and stability of spinning bosonic stars. In the scalar/vector case these are known as boson/Proca stars. Firstly, we consider the formation scenario. Starting with constraint-obeying initial data, describing a dilute, axisymmetric cloud of spinning scalar/Proca field, gravitational collapse towards a spinning star occurs, via gravitational cooling. In the scalar case the formation is transient, even for a non-perturbed initial cloud; a non…
In this paper, inspired by the holographic dual of the entanglement entropy, we consider the behaviour of extremal, codimension two, spacelike surfaces in the background of three and four dimensional charged boson stars in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. We find conditions for which families of minimal area surfaces fail to contain the entire bulk spacetime and construct a phase diagram showcasing the transition between regimes. In addition, we use the relation between the star's mass and the central density of the scalar field to argue for a possible instability of such hollow soluti…
We investigate the effective action of 2+1 dimensional charged spin 1/2 fermions and spin 0 bosons in the presence of a $U(1)$ gauge field. We evaluate terms in an expansion up to second order in derivatives of the field strength, but exactly in the mass parameter and in the magnitude of the nonvanishing constant field strength. We find that in a strong uniform magnetic field background, space-derivative terms lower the energy, and there arises an instability toward inhomogeneous magnetic fields.
It is expected that the Gregory-Laflamme (GL) instability in the black string in gravity is related to the Rayleigh-Plateau instability in fluid mechanics. Especially, the orders of the phase transitions associated with these instabilities depend on the number of the transverse space dimensions, and they are of first and second order below and above the critical dimension. Through the gauge-gravity correspondence, the GL instability is conjectured to be thermodynamically related to the Hagedorn instability in large-N gauge theories, and it leads to a prediction that the order of the confinemen…
We discuss the classical and quantum stability of general configurations representing many fuzzy spheres in dimensionally reduced Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons models with and without supersymmetry. By performing one-loop perturbative calculations around such configurations, we find that intersecting fuzzy spheres are classically unstable in the class of models studied in this paper. We also discuss the large-N limit of the one-loop effective action as a function of the distance of fuzzy spheres. This shows, in particular, that concentric fuzzy spheres with different radii, which are identified with…
Low-energy thermal equilibrium states of strongly coupled ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on a three-sphere are unstable with respect to fluctuations breaking the global $SO(6)$ R-symmetry. Using the gauge theory/gravity correspondence, a large class of initial conditions in the R-symmetry singlet sector of the theory was been identified that fail to thermalize \cite{Buchel:2013uba,Balasubramanian:2014cja}. A toy model realization of such states is provided by {\it boson stars}, a stationary gravitational configurations supported by a complex scalar field in $AdS_5$-gravity…
