We study the stability of rotating scalar boson stars, comparing those made from a simple massive complex scalar (referred to as mini boson stars), to those with several different types of nonlinear interactions. To that end, we numerically evolve the nonlinear Einstein-Klein-Gordon equations in 3D, beginning with stationary boson star solutions. We show that the linear, non-axisymmetric instability found in mini boson stars with azimuthal number $m=1$ persists across the entire parameter space for these stars, though the timescale diverges in the Newtonian limit. Therefore, any boson star with $m=1$ that is sufficiently far into the non-relativistic regime, where the leading order mass term dominates, will be unstable, independent of the nonlinear scalar self-interactions. However, we do find regions of $m=1$ boson star parameter space where adding nonlinear interactions to the scalar potential quenches the non-axisymmetric instability, both on the non-relativistic, and the relativistic branches of solutions. We also consider select boson stars with $m=2$, finding instability in all cases. For the cases exhibiting instability, we follow the nonlinear development, finding a range of dynamics including fragmentation into multiple unbound non-rotating stars, and formation of binary black holes. Finally, we comment on the relationship between stability and criteria based on the rotating boson star's frequency in relation to that of a spherical boson star or the existence of a co-rotation point. The boson stars that we find not to exhibit instability when evolved for many dynamical times include rapidly rotating cases where the compactness is comparable to that of a black hole or neutron star.
It is interesting to note that most black holes are born very slowly rotating. We investigate scalarization of slowly rotating black holes in the Einstein-scalar-Chern-Simons (EsCS) theory. In the slow rotation approximation, the CS term takes a linear form of rotation parameter $a$ which determines the tachyonic instability. The tachyonic instability for slowly rotating black holes represents the onset of spontaneous scalarization. It is shown that the slowly rotating black holes are unstable against a spherically symmetric scalar-mode perturbation for positive coupling $α$, whereas these bla…
It has been shown that scalar fields can form gravitationally bound compact objects called boson stars. In this study, we analyze boson star configurations where the scalar fields contain a small amount of angular momentum and find two new classes of solutions. In the first case all particles are in the same slowly rotating state and in the second case the majority of particles are in the non-rotating ground state and a small number of particles are in an excited rotating state. In both cases, we solve the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii-Poisson equations that describe the profile of these compact…
In this paper, we construct rotating boson stars composed of the coexisting states of two scalar fields, including the ground and first excited states. We show the coexisting phase with both the ground and first excited states for rotating multistate boson stars. In contrast to the solutions of the nodeless boson stars, the rotating boson stars with two states have two types of nodes, including the $^1S^2S$ state and the $^1S^2P$ state. Moreover, we explore the properties of the mass $M$ of rotating boson stars with two states as a function of the synchronized frequency $ω$, as well as the non…
In this paper, we study rotating boson stars in the large coupling limit as well as in the Newtonian limit. We investigate the equilibrium solutions in four and five dimensions by adopting some analytical approximations. We show that the relations among the radius, angular momentum, Newtonian energy and quadrupole moment (for the four-dimensional solution) of the boson star can be qualitatively realized for the minimal number of boson star parameters.
Boson stars represent a hypothetical exotic type of compact stellar object that may be observed from the gravitational signal of coalescing binaries in current and future GW detectors. In this work we show that the moment of inertia $I$, the (dimensionless) angular momentum $χ$ and the quadrupole moment $Q$ of rotating boson stars obey a universal relation, valid for a wide set of boson star models. Further, the obtained $I-χ-Q~$ relation clearly differs from its famous neutron star counterpart, providing us with an unequivocal diagnostic tool to distinguish boson stars from ordinary compact s…
We study scalarization of slowly rotating black holes in the Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (GB)-Chern-Simons (CS) theory. In the slow rotation approximation of $a\ll1$ with rotation parameter $a$, the GB term is given by a term for Schwarzschild black hole, whereas the CS term takes a linear term of $a$. The tachyonic instability for slowly rotating black holes represents the onset of spontaneous scalarization. We use the (2+1)-dimensional hyperboloidal foliation method to show the tachyonic instability for slowly rotating black holes by considering the time evolution of a spherically symmetric…
We consider rotating wormhole solutions supported by a complex phantom scalar field with a quartic self-interaction, where the phantom field induces the rotation of the spacetime. The solutions are regular and asymptotically flat. A subset of solutions describing static but not spherically symmetric wormholes is also obtained.
It has recently been proved that, in the presence of vortex flows, the fluctuation dynamics of a rotating photon-fluid model is governed by the Klein-Gordon equation of an effective massive scalar field in a $(2+1)$-dimensional acoustic black-hole spacetime. Interestingly, it has been demonstrated numerically that the rotating acoustic black hole, like the familiar Kerr black-hole spacetime, may support spatially regular stationary density fluctuations (linearized acoustic scalar `clouds') in its exterior regions. In particular, it has been shown that the composed rotating-acoustic-black-hole-…
Does circumventing the curvature singularity of the Kerr black hole affects the timescale of the scalar cloud formation around it? By definition, the scalar cloud, forms a gravitational atom with hydrogen-like bound states, lying on the threshold of a massive scalar field's superradiant instability regime (time-growing quasi-bound states) and beyond (time-decaying quasi-bound states). By taking a novel type of rotating hollow regular black hole proposed by Simpson and Visser which unlike its standard rivals has an asymptotically Minkowski core, we address this question. The metric has a minima…
We perform the stability analysis of the Kerr black hole in the Einstein-Chern-Simons-Scalar theory with quadratic scalar coupling. For positive coupling parameter ($α>0$), we introduce the (2+1)-dimensional hyperboloidal foliation method to show that the Kerr black hole is unstable against scalar-mode perturbation. In case of $α<0$, it is shown that the Kerr black hole is unstable without any $α$-independent bound on the rotation parameter $a$ when using the the hyperboloidal foliation method. The disappearance of the $a$-bound is confirmed analytically by implementing the (1+1)-dimensional l…
By using the scaling symmetry in the reduced action formalism, we derive the novel Smarr relation which holds even for the hairy rotating AdS_3 black holes. And then, by using the Smarr relation we argue that the hairy rotating AdS_3 black holes are stable thermodynamically, compared to the non-hairy ones.
We study the holographic duals of bosonic and fermionic fields and compute their Quasinormal Frequencies (QNF) by exploiting that they are massive charged fields in $\mathrm{AdS_2 \times \mathcal{K}}$. In particular, we assess the stability of the scalar and fermionic operators in Myers-Perry's black holes with equal angular momenta. We compute the central charge and the Hawking-entropy and introduce extremality parameters to determine the properties of the dual CFT. Then, we briefly discuss how detection of Spin-2 fields can pave the way for more deep understanding of the holographic principl…
The tachyonic instability of the Kerr black holes is analyzed in the Einstein-scalar theory with the quadratic scalar couplings to two topological terms which are parity-even Gauss-Bonnet and parity-odd Chern-Simons terms. For positive coupling $α$, we use the (2+1)-dimensional hyperboloidal foliation method to derive the threshold curve which is the boundary between stable and unstable Kerr black holes by considering a spherically symmetric scalar-mode perturbation. In case of negative coupling, a newly bound of $a\ge0.26$ with $a$ the rotation parameter is found for unstable Kerr black holes…
The scalar radiation emitted by a source in geodesic circular orbit around a regular Bardeen black hole is analyzed. We use the quantum field theory in curved spacetime framework to obtain the emitted power of radiation by computing the one-particle emission amplitude of scalar particles in the curved background. We compare our results to a similar setting in the spacetime of a Reissner-Nordström black hole.
In this work we present full sets of solutions for rotating charged boson stars with different coupling values. By adopting local comoving coordinates, we are able to find expressions for the effective hydrodynamic quantities of the fluids as seen by this class of observers. We show that not only is the energy density non zero at the center, for the uncharged case it has a local maximum at the core from which it decreases until the point of local minimum where its variation is discontinuous. For the first time, it is reported how rotating boson stars, charged and uncharged, are completely anis…
We revisit the problem of the rotating generalization of the Fisher-Janis-Newman-Winicour solution of the minimal Einstein-scalar theory proving that the two previously proposed solutions do not satisfy the equations of motion. We also derive several new spinning solutions with the scalar charge, which are endowed with oblate deformation.
We construct rapidly rotating neutron star models in scalar-tensor theories with a massive scalar field. The fact that the scalar field has nonzero mass leads to very interesting results since the allowed range of values of the coupling parameters is significantly broadened. These deviations from pure general relativity can be very large for values of the parameters that are in agreement with the observations. The rapid rotation can magnify the differences several times compared to the static case. The universal relations between the normalized moment of inertia and quadrupole moment are also …

We present the first numerical models of differentially rotating stars in alternative theories of gravity. We chose a particular class of scalar-tensor theories of gravity that is indistinguishable from GR in the weak field regime but can lead to significant deviations when strong fields are considered. We show that the maximum mass that a differentially rotating neutron star can sustain increases significantly for scalarized solutions and such stars can reach larger angular momenta. In addition, the presence of a nontrivial scalar field has the effect of increasing the required axis ratio for…
We show that minimal boson stars, i.e. boson stars made out of scalar fields without self-interaction, are always classically unstable in 5 space-time dimensions. This is true for the non-rotating as well as rotating case with two equal angular momenta and in both Einstein and Gauss-Bonnet gravity, respectively, and contrasts with the 4-dimensional case, where classically stable minimal boson stars exist. We also discuss the appearance of ergoregions for rotating boson stars with two equal angular momenta. While rotating black holes typically possess an ergoregion, rotating compact objects wit…
Binary pulsar observations and gravitational wave detections seriously constrained scalar-tensor theories with massless scalar field allowing only small deviations from general relativity. If we consider a nonzero mass of the scalar field, though, significant deviations from general relativity are allowed for values of the parameters that are in agreement with the observations. In the present paper we extend this idea and we study scalar-tensor theory with massive field with self-interaction term in the potential. The additional term suppresses the scalar field in the neutron star models in ad…
Boson Stars are stationary, axially symmetric solutions of a complex scalar field theory coupled to gravity. Recently, multi-solitonic configurations interpreted as static chains of multiple Boson Stars bound by gravity and carrying no angular momentum were reported. We propose to generalize those solutions to the stationary case by constructing chains of rotating Boson Stars and analyze their properties. The non-linear elliptic field equations are solved using the finite element method. We find that chains with an even number of constituents exhibit the same spiral-like frequency dependence o…
