In this paper, we study the circular orbit of the spinning test particle in the background of a rotating boson star. Using the pole-dipole approximation and neglecting the back-reaction of the spinning test particle on the spacetime, the equation of motion of the spinning test particle is described by the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equation. We solve this equation under the Tulczyjew spin-supplementary condition and obtain the four-momentum and four-velocity of the spinning test particle. Quite different from the spinless particle, the effective potential of the spinning particle with zero orbital angular momentum goes to infinite at the center of the rotating boson star. This will lead to the fact that the spinning particle can not pass through the center of the boson star. However, when the spin angular momentum and orbital angular momentum satisfy $2\bar{s}+\bar{l}=0$, the effective potential is not divergent anymore and the spinning particle can pass through the center of the rotating boson star. {We still investigate how the spin affects the structure of the circular orbits and we find that the spin will induce the larger or smaller regions of no circular orbits, unstable circular orbits, and stable circular orbits.} Moreover, the radius and energy of the circular orbit will be decreased or increased by the particle spin. These results will have an important application in testing the gravitational waves in the boson star background.
The Ricci Rotation Coefficients in the description of trajectories of spinning test particles off-equatorial planes in a rotational gravitational field
We use the frequency and time domain Teukolsky formalism to calculate gravitational-wave fluxes from a spinning body on a bound eccentric equatorial orbit around a Kerr black hole. The spinning body is represented as a point particle following the pole-dipole approximation of the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations. Reformulating these equations we are not only able to find the trajectory of a spinning particle in terms of its constants of motion, but also to provide a method to calculate the azimuthal and the radial frequency of this trajectory. Using these orbital quantities, we introduce t…
The detection of gravitational waves from Extreme mass Ratio Inspirals (EMRIs) by the future space-based gravitational-wave detectors demands the generation of accurate enough waveform templates. Since the spin of the smaller secondary body cannot be neglected for the detection and parameter estimation of EMRIs, we study its influence on the phase of the gravitational waves from EMRIs with spinning secondary. We focus on generic eccentric equatorial orbits around a Kerr black hole. To model the spinning secondary object, we use the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations in the pole-dipole approx…
In this article, we investigate the motion of a spinning particle at a constant inclination, different from the equatorial plane, around a Kerr black hole. We mainly explore the possibilities of stable circular orbits for different spin supplementary conditions. The Mathission-Papapetrau's equations are extensively applied and solved within the framework of linear spin approximation. We explicitly show that for a given spin vector of the form $S^{a} = \left(0,S^r,S^θ,0\right)$ , there exists an unique circular orbit at $(r_c,θ_c)$ defined by the simultaneous minima of energy, angular momentum …
There are three regimes of gravitational-radiation-reaction-induced inspiral for a compact body with mass mu, in a circular, equatorial orbit around a Kerr black hole with mass M>>mu: (i) The "adiabatic inspiral regime", in which the body gradually descends through a sequence of circular, geodesic orbits. (ii) A "transition regime", near the innermost stable circular orbit (isco). (iii) The "plunge regime", in which the body travels on a geodesic from slightly below the isco into the hole's horizon. This paper gives an analytic treatment of the transition regime and shows that, with some luck,…
We report exotic orbital phenomena of spinning test particles orbiting around a Kerr black hole, i.e., some orbits of spinning particles are asymmetrical about the equatorial plane. When a nonspinning test particle orbits around a Kerr black hole in a strong field region, due to relativistic orbital precessions, the pattern of trajectories is symmetrical about the equatorial plane of the Kerr black hole. However, the patterns of the spinning particles' orbit are no longer symmetrical about the equatorial plane for some orbital configurations and large spins. We argue that these asymmetrical pa…
Comparing effective-one-body and Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon results for a spinning test particle on circular equatorial orbits around a Kerr black hole
The Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) equations describe the motion of an extended test body in general relativity. This system of equations, though, is underdetermined and has to be accompanied by constraining supplementary conditions, even in its simplest version, which is the pole-dipole approximation corresponding to a spinning test body. In particular, imposing a spin supplementary condition (SSC) fixes the center of the mass of the spinning body, i.e. the centroid of the body. In the present study, we examine whether characteristic features of the centroid of a spinning test body, moving …
After considering the reference case of the motion of spinning test bodies in the equatorial plane of the Schwarzschild space-time, we generalize the results to the case of the motion of a spinning particle in the equatorial plane of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time. Specifically, we obtain the loci of turning points of the particle in this plane. We show that the cosmological constant affect the particle motion when the particle distance from the black hole is of the order of the inverse square root of the cosmological constant.
This paper formulates, via the Mathisson - Papapetrou - Dixon equations, the system of equations for a test particle with spin when it is orbiting a weak Kerr metric. We shall restrict ourselves to the case of circular orbits with the purpose of comparing our results with the results of the literature. In particular, we solve the set of equations of motion for the case of circular trajectories both spinless and spinning test particles around rotating bodies in equatorial plane. The results obtained are an important guideline for the study of the effects of the particles with spin in rotating g…
We study stability of a circular orbit of a spinning test particle in a Kerr spacetime. We find that some of the circular orbits become unstable in the direction perpendicular to the equatorial plane, although the orbits are still stable in the radial direction. Then for the large spin case ($S < \sim O(1)), the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) appears before the minimum of the effective potential in the equatorial plane disappears. This changes the radius of ISCO and then the frequency of the last circular orbit.
We present a new computation of the asymptotic gravitational wave energy fluxes emitted by a {\it spinning} particle in circular equatorial orbits about a Kerr black hole. The particle dynamics is computed in the pole-dipole approximation, solving the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations with the Tulczyjew spin-supplementary-condition. The fluxes are computed, for the first time, by solving the 2+1 Teukolsky equation in the time-domain using hyperboloidal and horizon-penetrating coordinates. Denoting by $M$ the black hole mass and by $μ$ the particle mass, we cover dimensionless background spins $a/…
We construct effective-one-body waveform models suitable for data analysis with LISA for extreme-mass ratio inspirals in quasi-circular, equatorial orbits about a spinning supermassive black hole. The accuracy of our model is established through comparisons against frequency-domain, Teukolsky-based waveforms in the radiative approximation. The calibration of eight high-order post-Newtonian parameters in the energy flux suffices to obtain a phase and fractional amplitude agreement of better than 1 radian and 1 % respectively over a period between 2 and 6 months depending on the system considere…
Equilibrium conditions and spin dynamics of spinning test particles are discussed in the stationary and axially symmetric Kerr-de Sitter black-hole or naked-singularity spacetimes. The general equilibrium conditions are established, but due to their great complexity, the detailed discussion of the equilibrium conditions and spin dynamics is presented only in the simple and most relevant cases of equilibrium positions in the equatorial plane and on the symmetry axis of the spacetimes. It is shown that due to the combined effect of the rotation of the source and the cosmic repulsion the equilibr…
The worldline of a spinning test body moving in curved spacetime can be provided by the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) equations when its centroid, i.e. its center of mass, is fixed by a Spin Supplementary Condition (SSC). In the present study, we continue the exploration of shifts between different centroids started in a recently published work [ Phys. Rev. D 104, 024042 (2021)], henceforth Paper I, for the Schwarzschild spacetime, by examining the frequencies of circular equatorial orbits under a change of the SSC in the Kerr spacetime. In particular, we examine the convergence in the term…
Spherically symmetric black holes produce, by strong field lensing, two infinite series of relativistic images, formed by light rays winding around the black hole at distances comparable to the gravitational radius. In this paper, we address the relevance of the black hole spin for the strong field lensing phenomenology, focusing on trajectories close to the equatorial plane for simplicity. In this approximation, we derive a two-dimensional lens equation and formulae for the position and the magnification of the relativistic images in the strong field limit. The most outstanding effect is the …
This work provides gravitational wave energy and angular momentum asymptotic fluxes from a spinning body moving on generic orbits in a Kerr spacetime up to linear in spin approximation. To achieve this, we have developed a new frequency domain Teukolsky equation solver that calculates asymptotic amplitudes from generic orbits of spinning bodies with their spin aligned with the total orbital angular momentum. However, the energy and angular momentum fluxes from these orbits in the linear in spin approximation are appropriate for adiabatic models of extreme mass ratio inspirals even for spins no…
High-order post-Newtonian expansion of the generalized redshift invariant for eccentric-orbit, equatorial extreme-mass-ratio inspirals with a spinning primary
We provide a systematic analysis of the multipolar gravitational waveform, energy and angular momentum fluxes emitted by a nonspinning test particle orbiting a Kerr black hole along equatorial, eccentric orbits. These quantities are computed by numerically solving the Teukolsky equation in the time domain and are then used to test and improve the radiation reaction (and waveform) of an effective-one-body (EOB) model. Eccentricity is incorporated into EOB by replacing the quasi-circular Newtonian (or leading-order) prefactors in the EOB-factorized multipolar waveform (and fluxes) with their gen…
The spinning C-metric was discovered by Plebanski and Demianski as a generalization of the standard C-metric which is known to represent uniformly accelerated non-rotating black holes. We first transform the spinning C-metric into Weyl coordinates and analyze some of its properties as Killing vectors and curvature invariants. A transformation is then found which brings the metric into the canonical form of the radiative spacetimes with the boost-rotation symmetry. By analytically continuing the metric across "acceleration horizons", two new regions of the spacetime arise in which both Killing …
We construct rotating black holes in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet theory with a quadratic coupling function. We map the domain of existence of the rotating fundamental solutions, we construct radially excited rotating black holes (including their existence lines), and we show that there are angularly excited rotating black holes. The bifurcation points of the radially and angularly excited solutions branching out of the Schwarzschild solution follow a regular pattern.
In this paper we investigate the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a spinning test particle moving in the rotating Maxwell-dilaton black hole spacetime. By using the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations along with the Tulczyjew spin-supplementary condition, we find the equations of motion in the equatorial plane and, from the radial equation, it is obtained the effective potential for the description of the particle's motion. The obtained trajectories show that the ISCO radii for spinning particles moving in rotating charged backgrounds are always smaller than those obtained in the cor…
Using the Teukolsky and Sasaki-Nakamura formalisms for the perterbations around a Kerr black hole, we calculate the energy flux of gravitational waves induced by a {\it spinning} particle of mass $μ$ and spin $S$ moving in circular orbits near the equatorial plain of a rotating black hole of mass $M (\gg μ)$ and spin $Ma$. The calculations are performed by using the recently developed post-Newtonian expansion technique of the Teukolsky equation. To evaluate the source terms of perturbations caused by a {\it spinning} particle, we used the equations of motion of a spinning particle derived by P…
Using the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations together with the Tulczyjew spin-supplementary condition, we study the circular orbits of a spinning test particle moving in the equatorial plane of a quantum improved Rotating Black Hole (RBH) spacetime. This background metric incorporates a position-dependent gravitational constant $G(r)$ and its behavior determines the quantum corrections to the properties of the Innermost Stable Circular Orbit (ISCO). The obtained results show that the radius of the event horizon as well as the radius of the ISCO for the quantum improved RBH are smaller than t…
Results are presented from high-precision computations of the orbital evolution and emitted gravitational waves for a stellar-mass object spiraling into a massive black hole in a slowly shrinking, circular, equatorial orbit. The focus of these computations is inspiral near the innermost stable circular orbit (isco)---more particularly, on orbits for which the angular velocity Omega is 0.03 < Omega/Omega_{isco} < 1. The computations are based on the Teukolsky-Sasaki-Nakamura formalism, and the results are tabulated in a set of functions that are of order unity and represent relativistic correct…
In this work, we investigated the motion of spinning test particles around a rotating wormhole, extending, in this way, the previous work of Benavides-Gallego et al. in [Phys. Rev. D 101, no.12, 124024] to the general case. Using the Mathisson-Papapetrous-Dixon equations, we study the effective potential, circular orbits, and the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of spinning test particles. We found that both the particle and wormhole spins affect the location of the ISCO significantly. On the other hand, Similar to the non-rotating case, we also found two possible configurations in the e…
We analytically compute the gravitational self-force correction to the gyroscope precession along slightly eccentric equatorial orbits in the Kerr spacetime, generalizing previous results for the Schwarzschild spacetime. Our results are accurate through the 9.5 post-Newtonian order and to second order in both eccentricity and rotation parameter. We also provide a post-Newtonian check of our results based on the currently known Hamiltonian for spinning binaries.
When the equatorial spin velocity, $v$, of a charged conducting sphere approaches $c$, the Lorentz force causes a remarkable rearrangement of the total charge $q$. Charge of that sign is confined to a narrow equatorial belt at latitudes $b \leqslant \sqrt{3} (1 - v^2/c^2)^{1/2}$ while charge of the opposite sign occupies most of the sphere's surface. The change in field structure is shown to be a growing contribution of the `magic' electromagnetic field of the charged Kerr-Newman black hole with Newton's G set to zero. The total charge within the narrow equatorial belt grows as $(1-v^2/c^2)^{-…
Extreme mass-ratio inspirals detectable by the future Laser Interferometer Space Antenna provide a unique way to test general relativity and fundamental physics. Motivated by this possibility, here we study in detail the EMRI dynamics in the presence of a spinning secondary, collecting and extending various results that appeared in previous work and also providing useful intermediate steps and new relations for the first time. We present the results of a frequency-domain code that computes gravitational-wave fluxes and the adiabatic orbital evolution for the case of circular, equatorial orbits…
We investigate the motion of spinning test bodies in General Relativity. By means of a multipolar approximation method for extended test bodies we derive the equations of motion, and classify the orbital motion of pole-dipole test bodies in the equatorial plane of the Kerr geometry. An exact expression for the periastron shift of a spinning test body is given. Implications of test body spin corrections are studied and compared with the results obtained by means of other approximation schemes.
We construct novel solutions to the effective Einstein equation with four dimensional cosmological constant on a 3-brane in Randall-Sundrum II scenario. The charged solution is obtained by assuming the existence of localized Maxwell fields on the 3-brane. Timelike and null circular geodesics in the neutral rotating braneworld spacetime with NUT parameter are discussed, and we find that such geodesics cannot occur on the equatorial plane. On non-equatorial planes, timelike circular geodesics can occur for the negative tidal charge, but we cannot find numerical results to support the existence o…
Very large mass ratio binary black hole systems are of interest both as a clean limit of the two-body problem in general relativity, as well as for their importance as sources of low-frequency gravitational waves. At lowest order, the smaller body moves along a geodesic of the larger black hole's spacetime. Post-geodesic effects include the gravitational self force, which incorporates the backreaction of gravitational-wave emission, and the spin-curvature force, which arises from coupling of the small body's spin to the black hole's spacetime curvature. In this paper, we describe a method for …
In the present article, we study the orbital resonance corresponds to an extended object approximated up to the dipole order term in Kerr spacetime. We start with the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations under the linear spin approximation and primarily concentrate on two particular events. First, when the orbits are nearly circular and executing a small oscillation about the equatorial plane and second, a generic trajectory confined on the equatorial plane. While in the first case, all the three fundamental frequencies, namely, radial $Ω_r$, angular $Ω_θ$, azimuthal $Ω_ϕ$ can be commensurate with e…
This paper computes co-rotating and contra-rotating impact-parameter formulas in the plane of symmetry for any plane symmetric and axisymmetric rotating body in all metric theories of gravity, including general relativity. Impact-parameter formulas are useful to compute the appearance of accreting black holes, neutron stars, and other emitting or reflecting matter near a gravitationally compact rotating body. These rotating-body impact-parameter formulas generalize similar impact-parameter formulas for the Kerr case derived by Bardeen and coworkers in 1972, and another general-metric formula f…
We study the motion of a spinning test particle in Schwarzschild spacetime, analyzing the Poincaré map and the Lyapunov exponent. We find chaotic behavior for a particle with spin higher than some critical value (e.g. $S_{cr} \sim 0.64 μM$ for the total angular momentum $J=4 μM$), where $μ$ and $M$ are the masses of a particle and of a black hole, respectively. The inverse of the Lyapunov exponent in the most chaotic case is about three orbital periods, which suggests that chaos of a spinning particle may become important in some relativistic astrophysical phenomena. The ``effective potential"…
We present a method for constructing stationary, asymptotically flat, rotating solutions of Einstein's field equations. One of the spun-up solutions has quasilocal mass but no global mass. It has an ergosphere but no event horizon. The angular momentum is constant everywhere beyond the ergosphere. The energy-momentum content of this solution can be interpreted as a rotating string-fluid.
The Detweiler-Barack-Sago redshift function for particles moving along slightly eccentric equatorial orbits around a Kerr black hole is currently known up to the second order in eccentricity, second order in spin parameter, and the 8.5 post-Newtonian order. We improve the analytical computation of such a gauge-invariant quantity by including terms up to the fourth order in eccentricity at the same post-Newtonian approximation level. We also check that our results agrees with the corresponding post-Newtonian expectation of the same quantity, calculated by using the currently known Hamiltonian f…
The motion of spinning particles around compact objects, for example a rotating stellar object moving around a supermassive black hole, is described by differential equations that are, in general, non-integrable. In this work, we present a computational code that integrates the equations of motion of a spinning particle moving in the equatorial plane of a spherically symmetric spacetime and gives a visual representation of its trajectory. This code is open source, freely available and modular, so that users may extend its application not only to the Schwarzschild metric, but also to other back…

The analytical and numerical solutions of the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations under the Mathisson-Pirani supplementary condition describing highly relativistic (ultrarelativistic) motions of a spinning particle in a Schwarzschild field are investigated. The known condition S/mr<<1, which is necessary for a test particle, holds on all these solutions. The explicit expressions for the non-equatorial circular orbits, in particular for the space boundaries of the region of existence of these orbits, are obtained. The dynamics of the deviation of a spinning particle from the equatorial ultrarelativi…

The behaviour of charged spinning test particles moving along circular orbits in the equatorial plane of the Reissner-Nordström spacetime is studied in the framework of the Dixon-Souriau model completed with standard choices of supplementary conditions. The gravitomagnetic " clock effect", i.e. the delay in the arrival times of two oppositely circulating particles as measured by a static observer, is derived and discussed in the cases in which the particles have equal/opposite charge and spin, the latter being directed along the $z$-axis.
The scattering of spinning test particles by a Schwarzschild black hole is studied. The motion is described according to the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon model for extended bodies in a given gravitational background field. The equatorial plane is taken as the orbital plane, the spin vector being orthogonal to it with constant magnitude. The equations of motion are solved analytically in closed form to first-order in spin and the solution is used to compute corrections to the standard geodesic scattering angle as well as capture cross section by the black hole.
A non-monotonic behavior of the velocity gradient of a test particle revolving around a rapidly rotating black hole in the locally non-rotating frame of reference is known as the Aschenbach effect. This effect can serve as a distinguishing signature of rapidly rotating black holes, being potentially useful for the measurements of the astrophysical black hole spins. This paper is the generalization of our previous research to the motion of spinning particles around a rotating black hole with non-zero cosmological constant. We show that both the particle's spin $s$ and the cosmological constant …
In this work we calculate some estimations of the gravitomagnetic clock effect, taking into consideration not only the rotating gravitational field of the central mass, but also the spin of the test particle, obtaining values for $Δt=t_{+}-t_{-}=2.5212079035\times10^{-8} \textrm{s}$. We use the formulation of Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations for this problem in a Kerr metric. In order to compare our numerical results with previous works, we consider initially only the equatorial plane and also apply the Mathisson-Pirani supplementary spin condition for the spinning test particle.
We investigate the influence of the quadrupole moment of a rotating source on the motion of a test particle in the strong field regime. For this purpose the Hartle-Thorne metric, that is an approximate solution of vacuum Einstein field equations that describes the exterior of any slowly rotating, stationary and axially symmetric body, is used. The metric is given with accuracy up to the second order terms in the body's angular momentum, and first order terms in its quadrupole moment. We give, with the same accuracy, analytic equations for equatorial circular geodesics in the Hartle-Thorne spac…
The motion of classical spinning test particles in the equatorial plane of a Kerr black hole is considered for the case where the particle spin is perpendicular to the equatorial plane. We review some results of our recent research of the innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) [P.I. Jefremov, O.Yu. Tsupko and G.S. Bisnovatyi-Kogan, Phys.Rev. D 91 124030 (2015)] and present some new calculations. The ISCO radius, total angular momentum, energy, and orbital angular frequency are considered. We calculate the ISCO parameters numerically for different values of the Kerr parameter $a$ and investiga…
We study eccentric equatorial orbits of a test-body around a Kerr black hole under the influence of gravitational radiation reaction. We have adopted a well established two-step approach: assuming that the particle is moving along a geodesic (justifiable as long as the orbital evolution is adiabatic) we calculate numerically the fluxes of energy and angular momentum radiated to infinity and to the black hole horizon, via the Teukolsky-Sasaki-Nakamura formalism. We can then infer the rate of change of orbital energy and angular momentum and thus the evolution of the orbit. The orbits are fully …
We obtain generalized Raychaudhuri equations for spinning test particles corresponding to congruences of particle's world-lines, momentum, and spin. These are physical examples of the Raychaudhuri equation for a non-normalized vector, unit time-like vector, and unit space-like vector. We compute and compare the evolution of expansion-like parameters associated with these congruences for spinning particles confined in the equatorial plane of the Kerr space-time.
We examine the evolution, under gravitational radiation reaction, of slightly eccentric equatorial orbits of point particles around Kerr black holes. Our method involves numerical integration of the Sasaki-Nakamura equation. It is discovered that such orbits decrease in eccentricity throughout most of the inspiral, until shortly before the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO), when a critical radius $r_{\text{crit}}$ is reached beyond which the inspiralling orbits increase in eccentricity. It is shown that the number of orbits remaining in this last (eccentricity increasing) phase of the ins…
The orbital velocity profile of circular timelike geodesics in the equatorial plane of a Kerr black hole has a non-monotonic radial behavior, provided that the spin parameter $a$ of the black hole is bigger than a certain critical value $a_c \approx 0.9953 M$. Here the orbital velocity is measured with respect to the Locally Non-Rotating Frame (LNRF), and the non-monotonic behavior, which is known as the Aschenbach effect, occurs only for co-rotating orbits. Using the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations for a massive spinning particle, we investigate the Aschenbach effect for test particles w…
