The orbital velocity profile of circular timelike geodesics in the equatorial plane of a Kerr black hole has a non-monotonic radial behavior, provided that the spin parameter $a$ of the black hole is bigger than a certain critical value $a_c \approx 0.9953 M$. Here the orbital velocity is measured with respect to the Locally Non-Rotating Frame (LNRF), and the non-monotonic behavior, which is known as the Aschenbach effect, occurs only for co-rotating orbits. Using the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations for a massive spinning particle, we investigate the Aschenbach effect for test particles with spin. In addition to the black-hole spin, the absolute value of the particle's spin and its orientation (parallel or anti-parallel to the black-hole spin) also play an important role for the Aschenbach effect. We determine the critical value $a_c$ of the spin parameter of the Kerr black hole where the Aschenbach effect sets in as a function of the spin of the probe. We consider not only black holes ($a^2 \le M^2$) but also naked singularities ($a^2>M^2$). Whereas for spinless (geodesic) particles the orbital velocity is always monotonically decreasing if the motion is counter-rotating, we find that for spinning particles in counter-rotating motion with anti-parallel spin around a naked singularity the orbital velocity is increasing on a certain radius interval.
A non-monotonic behavior of the velocity gradient of a test particle revolving around a rapidly rotating black hole in the locally non-rotating frame of reference is known as the Aschenbach effect. This effect can serve as a distinguishing signature of rapidly rotating black holes, being potentially useful for the measurements of the astrophysical black hole spins. This paper is the generalization of our previous research to the motion of spinning particles around a rotating black hole with non-zero cosmological constant. We show that both the particle's spin $s$ and the cosmological constant …
Newton's theory predicts that the velocity $V$ of free test particles on circular orbits around a spherical gravity center is a decreasing function of the orbital radius $r$, $dV/dr < 0$. Only very recently, Aschenbach (A&A 425, p. 1075 (2004)) has shown that, unexpectedly, the same is not true for particles orbiting black holes: for Kerr black holes with the spin parameter $a>0.9953$, the velocity has a positive radial gradient for geodesic, stable, circular orbits in a small radial range close to the black hole horizon. We show here that the {\em Aschenbach effect} occurs also for non-geodes…
Critical discussion of the recently published results [Muller, A. and Aschenbach, B. 2007 Class. Quantum Grav. 24, p. 2637; arXiv:0704.3963] on the non-monotonic orbital velocity profiles of the Keplerian motion of test particles and l = const motion of test perfect fluid around K(a)dS black holes is given, and the discrepancies concerned the existence of the non-monotonicity in dependence of the spacetime parameters are corrected. Moreover a new non-monotonic behaviour of the Keplerian orbital velocity in the Kerr-antide Sitter spacetimes is highlighted.
It is shown that the Kerr black hole could act as accelerators for spinning particles. In principle, it could obtain arbitrarily high energy for extremal Kerr black hole. In this paper, we extend the previous research to the Kerr-(anti-)de Sitter background and find that the cosmological constant plays an important role in the result. For the case of Kerr-anti-de Sitter black holes, like the Kerr background, only the extremal Kerr-anti-de Sitter black holes can have a divergent center-of-mass energy of collision. While, for the case of Kerr-de Sitter black holes, the collision of two spinning …
We study the collision of two uncharged spinning particles around an extreme Kerr-Sen black hole and calculate the maximal efficiency of the energy extraction from the Kerr-Sen black hole via super Penrose process. We consider the collision of two massive particles as well as collision of a massless particle with a massive particle. For all the cases, we find that the maximum efficiency decreases as the Kerr-Sen black hole's parameter($b=1-a$) increases.
We investigate the motion of spinning test bodies in General Relativity. By means of a multipolar approximation method for extended test bodies we derive the equations of motion, and classify the orbital motion of pole-dipole test bodies in the equatorial plane of the Kerr geometry. An exact expression for the periastron shift of a spinning test body is given. Implications of test body spin corrections are studied and compared with the results obtained by means of other approximation schemes.
We study thermodynamics of the four-dimensional Kerr-Sen-AdS black hole and its ultra-spinning counterpart, and verify that both black holes fullfil the first law and Bekenstein-Smarr mass formulae of black hole thermodynamics. Furthermore, we derive new Christodoulou-Ruffini-like squared-mass formulae for the usual and ultra-spinning Kerr-Sen-AdS$_4$ solutions. We show that this ultra-spinning Kerr-Sen-AdS$_4$ black hole does not always violate the Reverse Isoperimetric Inequality (RII) since the value of the isoperimetric ratio can be larger/smaller than, or equal to unity, depending upon wh…
It has been shown that ultraenergetic collisions can occur near the horizon of an extremal Kerr black hole. Previous studies mainly focused on geodesic motions of particles. In this paper, we consider spinning test particles whose orbits are non-geodesic. By employing the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equation, we find the critical angular momentum satisfies $J=2E$ for extremal Kerr black holes. Although the conserved angular momentum $J$ and energy $E$ have been redefined in the presence of spin, the critical condition remains the same form. If a particle with this angular momentum collides with…
We study stability of a circular orbit of a spinning test particle in a Kerr spacetime. We find that some of the circular orbits become unstable in the direction perpendicular to the equatorial plane, although the orbits are still stable in the radial direction. Then for the large spin case ($S < \sim O(1)), the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) appears before the minimum of the effective potential in the equatorial plane disappears. This changes the radius of ISCO and then the frequency of the last circular orbit.
We revisit the conserved quantities of the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Tulczyjew equations describing the motion of spinning particles on a fixed background. Assuming Ricci-flatness and the existence of a Killing-Yano tensor, we demonstrate that besides the two non-trivial quasi-conserved quantities, i.e. conserved at linear order in the spin, found by Rüdiger, non-trivial quasi-conserved quantities are in one-to-one correspondence with non-trivial mixed-symmetry Killing tensors. We prove that no such stationary and axisymmetric mixed-symmetry Killing tensor exists on the Kerr geometry. We discuss th…
It has been proved that arbitrarily high-energy collision between two particles can occur near the horizon of an extremal Kerr black hole as long as the energy $E$ and angular momentum $L$ of one particle satisfies a critical relation, which is called the BSW mechanism. Previous researchers mainly concentrate on geodesic motion of particles. In this paper, we will take spinning particle which won't move along a timelike geodesic into our consideration, hence, another parameter $s$ describing the particle's spin angular momentum was introduced. By employing the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equati…
We have developed a methodology to test the age-old cosmic censorship hypothesis in Kerr geometry. We have shown that the Kerr black hole can be overspun by particles captured from the innermost stable circular orbit. However, it appears that this does not happen for particles coming from infinity. We have also observed that overspinning becomes possible only when the black hole approaches a near-extremal limit, which approaches as we increase the black hole's mass. Our study demonstrates that an extremal black hole cannot be overspun. However, our methodology neglects backreaction and self-fo…
In this work we investigate validity of the weak form of the cosmic censorship conjecture in the interaction of Kerr-Sen black holes with neutral test fields. Previous studies of the Klein-Gordon equation on Kerr-Sen background imply that superradiance occurs for scalar fields. We show that scalar fields can overspin a nearly extremal black hole into a naked singularity, but the modes that could overspin an extremal black hole are not absorbed due to superradiance. From Kerr analogy one can naively expect superradiance to be absent for fermionic fields. In such a case overspinning becomes gene…
In this work we calculate some estimations of the gravitomagnetic clock effect, taking into consideration not only the rotating gravitational field of the central mass, but also the spin of the test particle, obtaining values for $Δt=t_{+}-t_{-}=2.5212079035\times10^{-8} \textrm{s}$. We use the formulation of Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations for this problem in a Kerr metric. In order to compare our numerical results with previous works, we consider initially only the equatorial plane and also apply the Mathisson-Pirani supplementary spin condition for the spinning test particle.
Self-interacting boson stars have been shown to alleviate the astrophysically low maximal mass of their non-self-interacting counterparts. We report some physical features of spinning self-interacting boson stars, namely their compactness, the occurence of ergo-regions and the scalar field profiles, for a sample of values of the coupling parameter. The results agree with the general picture that these boson stars are comparatively less compact than the non-self-interacting ones. We also briefly discuss the effect of scalar self-interactions on the properties of Kerr black holes with scalar hai…
We report exotic orbital phenomena of spinning test particles orbiting around a Kerr black hole, i.e., some orbits of spinning particles are asymmetrical about the equatorial plane. When a nonspinning test particle orbits around a Kerr black hole in a strong field region, due to relativistic orbital precessions, the pattern of trajectories is symmetrical about the equatorial plane of the Kerr black hole. However, the patterns of the spinning particles' orbit are no longer symmetrical about the equatorial plane for some orbital configurations and large spins. We argue that these asymmetrical pa…
We use the frequency and time domain Teukolsky formalism to calculate gravitational-wave fluxes from a spinning body on a bound eccentric equatorial orbit around a Kerr black hole. The spinning body is represented as a point particle following the pole-dipole approximation of the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations. Reformulating these equations we are not only able to find the trajectory of a spinning particle in terms of its constants of motion, but also to provide a method to calculate the azimuthal and the radial frequency of this trajectory. Using these orbital quantities, we introduce t…

This work provides gravitational wave energy and angular momentum asymptotic fluxes from a spinning body moving on generic orbits in a Kerr spacetime up to linear in spin approximation. To achieve this, we have developed a new frequency domain Teukolsky equation solver that calculates asymptotic amplitudes from generic orbits of spinning bodies with their spin aligned with the total orbital angular momentum. However, the energy and angular momentum fluxes from these orbits in the linear in spin approximation are appropriate for adiabatic models of extreme mass ratio inspirals even for spins no…
The detection of gravitational waves from Extreme mass Ratio Inspirals (EMRIs) by the future space-based gravitational-wave detectors demands the generation of accurate enough waveform templates. Since the spin of the smaller secondary body cannot be neglected for the detection and parameter estimation of EMRIs, we study its influence on the phase of the gravitational waves from EMRIs with spinning secondary. We focus on generic eccentric equatorial orbits around a Kerr black hole. To model the spinning secondary object, we use the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations in the pole-dipole approx…
We study chaos dynamics of spinning particles in Kerr spacetime of rotating black holes use the Papapetrou equations by numerical integration. Because of spin, this system exists many chaos solutions, and exhibits some exceptional dynamic character. We investigate the relations between the orbits chaos and the spin magnitude S, pericenter, polar angle and Kerr rotation parameter a by means of a kind of brand new Fast Lyapulov Indicator (FLI) which is defined in general relativity. The classical definition of Lyapulov exponent (LE) perhaps fails in curve spacetime. And we emphasize that the Poi…
We investigate the dynamics of relativistic spinning test particles in the spacetime of a rotating black hole using the Papapetrou equations. We use the method of Lyapunov exponents to determine whether the orbits exhibit sensitive dependence on initial conditions, a signature of chaos. In the case of maximally spinning equal-mass binaries (a limiting case that violates the test-particle approximation) we find unambiguous positive Lyapunov exponents that come in pairs +/- lambda, a characteristic of Hamiltonian dynamical systems. We find no evidence for nonvanishing Lyapunov exponents for phys…
We investigate the dynamics of the Papapetrou equations in Kerr spacetime. These equations provide a model for the motion of a relativistic spinning test particle orbiting a rotating (Kerr) black hole. We perform a thorough parameter space search for signs of chaotic dynamics by calculating the Lyapunov exponents for a large variety of initial conditions. We find that the Papapetrou equations admit many chaotic solutions, with the strongest chaos occurring in the case of eccentric orbits with pericenters close to the limit of stability against plunge into a maximally spinning Kerr black hole. …
We investigate the scattering of a spinning test particle by a Kerr black hole within the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon model to linear order in spin. The particle's spin and orbital angular momentum are taken to be aligned with the black hole's spin. Both the particle's mass and spin length are assumed to be small in comparison with the characteristic length scale of the background curvature, in order to avoid backreaction effects. We analytically compute the modifications due to the particle's spin to the scattering angle, the periastron shift, and the condition for capture by the black hole, e…
In a recent work, [Phys. Rev. D. 94, 104010 (2016)], hereafter Paper I, we have numerically studied different prescriptions for the dynamics of a spinning particle in circular motion around a Schwarzschild black hole. In the present work, we continue this line of investigation to the rotating Kerr black hole. We consider the Mathisson-Papapetrou formalism under three different spin-supplementary-conditions (SSC), the Tulczyjew SSC, the Pirani SSC and the Ohashi-Kyrian-Semerak SSC, and analyze the different circular dynamics in terms of the ISCO shifts and the frequency parameter ${x \equiv (M …
The Bowen-York initial value data typically used in numerical relativity to represent spinning black hole are not those of a constant-time slice of the Kerr spacetime. If Bowen-York initial data are used for each black hole in a collision, the emitted radiation will be partially due to the ``relaxation'' of the individual holes to Kerr form. We compute this radiation by treating the geometry for a single hole as a perturbation of a Schwarzschild black hole, and by using second order perturbation theory. We discuss the extent to which Bowen-York data can be expected accurately to represent Kerr…
Equilibrium conditions and spin dynamics of spinning test particles are discussed in the stationary and axially symmetric Kerr-de Sitter black-hole or naked-singularity spacetimes. The general equilibrium conditions are established, but due to their great complexity, the detailed discussion of the equilibrium conditions and spin dynamics is presented only in the simple and most relevant cases of equilibrium positions in the equatorial plane and on the symmetry axis of the spacetimes. It is shown that due to the combined effect of the rotation of the source and the cosmic repulsion the equilibr…
Comparing effective-one-body and Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon results for a spinning test particle on circular equatorial orbits around a Kerr black hole
We consider the chiral field model of the source of the Kerr-Newman (KN) solution and obtain that it represents a supersymmetric spinning soliton, bounded by the chiral domain wall (DW) of the ellipsoidal form. The known method for transformation of the planar DW to Bogomolnyi form we generalize to the curved DW-bubble adapted to the Kerr coordinate system and obtain the supersymmetric BPS-saturated source of the KN solution, having some remarkable features, in particular, the quantum angular momentum. The main new result is that the source forms a breather, i.e. the DW-antiDW combination. Tak…
In the present article, we study the orbital resonance corresponds to an extended object approximated up to the dipole order term in Kerr spacetime. We start with the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations under the linear spin approximation and primarily concentrate on two particular events. First, when the orbits are nearly circular and executing a small oscillation about the equatorial plane and second, a generic trajectory confined on the equatorial plane. While in the first case, all the three fundamental frequencies, namely, radial $Ω_r$, angular $Ω_θ$, azimuthal $Ω_ϕ$ can be commensurate with e…
The deflection of light's trajectory has been studied in many different spacetime geometries in weak and strong gravity, including the special cases of spherically symmetric static and spinning black holes. It is also well known that the rotation of massive objects results in the dragging of inertial frames in the spacetime geometry. We present here a discussion of the asymmetry that appears explicitly in the exact analytical expression for the bending angle of light on the equatorial plane of the spinning, or Kerr, black hole.
A combined model of the Kerr spinning particle and superparticle is considered. The structure of the Kerr geometry is presented in a complex form as being created by a complex source. A natural supergeneralization of this construction is obtained corresponding to a complex "supersource". Peforming a supershift to the Kerr and Kerr-Sen solutions we obtain metrics of supergravity black holes with a nonlinear realization of broken supersymmetry.
The model of spinning particle, based on the Kerr-Newman solution with |a}>>m, is discussed. It is shown that the Kerr singular ring can be considered as a string with an orientifold world-sheet. Orientifold adds to the Kerr ring an extra peculiar point, the fixed point of the world-sheet parity operator. It is shown that the Kerr string represents a new type of the string solutions and turns out to be an open D-string with joined ends which are in the circular light-like motion along the Kerr ring.
The motion of classical spinning test particles in the equatorial plane of a Kerr black hole is considered for the case where the particle spin is perpendicular to the equatorial plane. We review some results of our recent research of the innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) [P.I. Jefremov, O.Yu. Tsupko and G.S. Bisnovatyi-Kogan, Phys.Rev. D 91 124030 (2015)] and present some new calculations. The ISCO radius, total angular momentum, energy, and orbital angular frequency are considered. We calculate the ISCO parameters numerically for different values of the Kerr parameter $a$ and investiga…
We study the motion of spinning test particles in Kerr spacetime using the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations; we impose different supplementary conditions among the well known Corinaldesi-Papapetrou, Pirani and Tulczyjew's and analyze their physical implications in order to decide which is the most natural to use. We find that if the particle's center of mass world line, namely the one chosen for the multipole reduction, is a spatially circular orbit (sustained by the tidal forces due to the spin) then the generalized momentum $P$ of the test particle is also tangent to a spatially circular orbit…
The Kerr solution is generated from the Schwarzschild solution by a simple combination of real global coordinate transformations and of invariance transformations acting on the space of stationary solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. The same transformation can be used to generate a spinning field configuration from any static axisymmetric configuration. We illustrate this by generating from the continuous family of Voorhees--Zipoy vacuum solutions a family of solutions endowed with mass, angular momentum, dipole magnetic moment and quadrupole electric moment.
We construct a Kerr-Newman-like spacetimes starting from higher dimensional (HD) Einstein-Yang-Mills black holes via complex transformations suggested by Newman-Janis. The new metrics are HD generalization of Kerr-Newman spacetimes which has a geometry precisely that of Kerr-Newman in 4D corresponding to Yang-Mills (YM) gauge charge, but the sign of charge term gets flipped in the HD spacetimes. It is interesting to note that gravitational contribution of YM gauge charge, in HD, is indeed opposite (attractive rather than repulsive) that of Maxwell charge. The effect of YM gauge charge on the s…
Physical interpretation of some stationary and non-stationary regions of the spinning C-metric is presented. They represent different spacetime regions of a uniformly accelerated Kerr black hole. Stability of geodesics corresponding to equilibrium points in a general stationary spacetime with an additional symmetry is also studied and results are then applied to the spinning C-metric.
Spinning black holes in dynamical Einstein-Chern-Simons gravity are constructed by directly solving the field equations, without resorting to any perturbative expansion. This model is obtained by adding to the Einstein-Hilbert action a particular higher-curvature correction: the Pontryagin density, linearly coupled to a scalar field. The spinning black holes are stationary, axi-symmetric, asymptotically flat generalisations of the Kerr solution of Einstein's gravity, but they possess a non-trivial (odd-parity) scalar field. They are regular on and outside the horizon and satisfy a generalized …
This work is concerned with suitable choices of tetrad fields and coordinate systems for the Hamiltonian formalism of a spinning particle derived in [E. Barausse, E. Racine, and A. Buonanno, Phys. Rev. D 80, 104025 (2009)]. After demonstrating that with the originally proposed tetrad field the components of the total angular momentum are not preserved in the Schwarzschild limit, we analyze other hitherto proposed tetrad choices. Then, we introduce and thoroughly test two new tetrad fields in the horizon penetrating Kerr-Schild coordinates. Moreover, we show that for the Schwarzschild spacetime…
A three-dimensional light-like foliation of a spacetime geometry is one particular way of studying its light cone structure and has important applications in numerical relativity. In this paper, we execute such a foliation for the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole geometry and compare it with the lightlike foliations of the Kerr-AdS and Kerr-Newman black holes. We derive the equations that govern this slicing and study their properties. In particular, we find that these null hypersurfaces develop caustics inside the inner horizon of the Kerr-Newman-AdS black hole, in strong contrast to the Kerr-AdS c…
In this paper, we will analyze the thermodynamics of a small singly spinning Kerr-AdS black hole. As the black hole will be sufficient small, its temperature will be large and so we can not neglect the effects of thermal fluctuations. We will demonstrate that these thermal fluctuations correct the entropy of singly spinning Kerr-AdS black hole by a logarithmic correction term. We will analyze the implications of the logarithmic correction on other thermodynamic properties of this black hole, and analyze the stability of such a black hole. We will observe that this form of correction becomes im…
The worldline of a spinning test body moving in curved spacetime can be provided by the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) equations when its centroid, i.e. its center of mass, is fixed by a Spin Supplementary Condition (SSC). In the present study, we continue the exploration of shifts between different centroids started in a recently published work [ Phys. Rev. D 104, 024042 (2021)], henceforth Paper I, for the Schwarzschild spacetime, by examining the frequencies of circular equatorial orbits under a change of the SSC in the Kerr spacetime. In particular, we examine the convergence in the term…
We demonstrate equivalences, under simple mappings, between the dynamics of three distinct systems---(i) an arbitrary-mass-ratio two-spinning-black-hole system, (ii) a spinning test black hole in a background Kerr spacetime, and (iii) geodesic motion in Kerr---when each is considered in the first post-Minkowskian (1PM) approximation to general relativity, i.e. to linear order $G$ but to all orders in $1/c$, and to all orders in the black holes' spins, with all orders in the multipole expansions of their linearized gravitational fields. This is accomplished via computations of the net results o…
On the basis of the Kerr spinning particle, we show that the mass renormalization is perfectly performed by gravity for an arbitrary distribution of source matter. A smooth regularization of the Kerr-Newman solution is considered, leading to a source in the form of a rotating bag filled by a false vacuum. It is shown that gravity controls the phase transition to an AdS or dS false vacuum state inside the bag, providing the mass balance.
We investigate the stable circular orbits of the spinning test particles around the accelerating Kerr black hole on the equatorial plane. To this end, we first calculate the equations of motion and analyze the parameter space for the particles. We study the effect of the particle's spin and the black hole's acceleration on the conserved angular momentum, conserved energy and radius of the spinning test particle on the innermost stable circular orbit. We find that the effect of the particle's spin on the orbit parameters is almost linear, the effect of the black hole's acceleration on those par…
Kerr geometry has twofoldedness which can be cured by a truncation of the `negative' sheet of metric. It leads to the models of disk-like sources of the Kerr solution and to a class of disk-like or bag-like models of the Kerr spinning particle. There is an alternative way: to retain the `negative' sheet as the sheet of advanced fields. In this case the source of spinning particle is the Kerr singular ring which can be considered as a twofold "Alice" string. This string can have electromagnetic excitations in the form of traveling waves generating spin and mass of the particle. Model of this so…
