The detection of gravitational waves from Extreme mass Ratio Inspirals (EMRIs) by the future space-based gravitational-wave detectors demands the generation of accurate enough waveform templates. Since the spin of the smaller secondary body cannot be neglected for the detection and parameter estimation of EMRIs, we study its influence on the phase of the gravitational waves from EMRIs with spinning secondary. We focus on generic eccentric equatorial orbits around a Kerr black hole. To model the spinning secondary object, we use the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations in the pole-dipole approximation. Furthermore, we linearize in spin the orbital variables and the gravitational-wave fluxes from the respective orbits. We obtain these fluxes by using the Teukolsky formalism in the frequency domain. We derive the evolution equations for the spin induced corrections to the adiabatic evolution of an inspiral. Finally, through their numerical integration we find the gravitational-wave phase shift between an inspiral of a spinning and a non-spinnig body.
There are three regimes of gravitational-radiation-reaction-induced inspiral for a compact body with mass mu, in a circular, equatorial orbit around a Kerr black hole with mass M>>mu: (i) The "adiabatic inspiral regime", in which the body gradually descends through a sequence of circular, geodesic orbits. (ii) A "transition regime", near the innermost stable circular orbit (isco). (iii) The "plunge regime", in which the body travels on a geodesic from slightly below the isco into the hole's horizon. This paper gives an analytic treatment of the transition regime and shows that, with some luck,…
We present a prescription to compute the time-domain gravitational wave (GW) polarization states associated with spinning compact binaries inspiraling along quasi-circular orbits. We invoke the orbital angular momentum ${\bf L}$ rather than its Newtonian counterpart ${\bf L_{\rm N}}$ to describe the orbits and the two spin vectors are freely specified in the source frame associated with the initial direction of the total angular momentum. We discuss the various implications of our approach.
The Ricci Rotation Coefficients in the description of trajectories of spinning test particles off-equatorial planes in a rotational gravitational field
We present an analytical waveform family describing gravitational waves (GWs) from the inspiral, merger and ringdown of non-spinning black-hole binaries including the effect of several non-quadrupole modes [($\ell = 2, m = \pm 1), (\ell = 3, m = \pm 3), (\ell = 4, m = \pm 4)$ apart from $(\ell = 2, m=\pm2)$]. We first construct spin-weighted spherical harmonics modes of hybrid waveforms by matching numerical-relativity simulations (with mass ratio $1-10$) describing the late inspiral, merger and ringdown of the binary with post-Newtonian/effective-one-body waveforms describing the early inspir…
It is customary to use a precessing convention, based on Newtonian orbital angular momentum ${\bf L}_{\rm N}$, to model inspiral gravitational waves from generic spinning compact binaries. A key feature of such a precessing convention is its ability to remove all spin precession induced modulations from the orbital phase evolution. However, this convention usually employs a post-Newtonian (PN) accurate precessional equation, appropriate for the PN accurate orbital angular momentum ${\bf L}$, to evolve the ${\bf L}_{\rm N}$-based precessing source frame. This motivated us to develop inspiral wa…
We investigate the non-adiabatic dynamics of spinning black hole binaries by using an analytical Hamiltonian completed with a radiation-reaction force, containing spin couplings, which matches the known rates of energy and angular momentum losses on quasi-circular orbits. We consider both a straightforward post-Newtonian-expanded Hamiltonian (including spin-dependent terms), and a version of the resummed post-Newtonian Hamiltonian defined by the Effective One-Body approach. We focus on the influence of spin terms onto the dynamics and waveforms. We evaluate the energy and angular momentum rele…
Extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) and intermediate-mass-ratio inspirals (IMRIs)--binaries in which a stellar-mass object spirals into a massive black hole or other massive, compact body--are important sources of gravitational waves for LISA and LIGO, respectively. Thorne has speculated that the waves from EMRIs and IMRIs encode, in principle, all the details of (i) the central body's spacetime geometry (metric), (ii) the tidal coupling (energy and angular momentum exchange) between the central body and orbiting object, and (iii) the evolving orbital elements. Fintan Ryan has given a first p…
We present a prescription to compute the time-domain gravitational wave (GW) polarization states associated with spinning compact binaries inspiraling along quasi-circular orbits. We invoke the orbital angular momentum $\vek L$ rather than its Newtonian counterpart $\vek L_{\rm N}$ to describe the binary orbits while the two spin vectors are freely specified in an inertial frame associated with the initial direction of the total angular momentum. We show that the use of $\vek L$ to describe the orbits leads to additional 1.5PN order amplitude contributions to the two GW polarization states com…
We compute gravitational waves from inspiraling stellar-mass compact objects on the equatorial plane of a massive spinning black hole (BH). Our inspiral orbits are computed by taking into account the adiabatic change of orbital parameters due to gravitational radiation in the lowest order in mass ratio. We employ an interpolation method to compute the adiabatic change at arbitrary points inside the region of orbital parameter space computed in advance. Using the obtained inspiral orbits and associated gravitational waves, we compute power spectra of gravitational waves and the signal-to-noise …
In the adiabatic post-Newtonian (PN) approximation, the phase evolution of gravitational waves (GWs) from inspiralling compact binaries in quasicircular orbits is computed by equating the change in binding energy with the GW flux. This energy balance equation can be solved in different ways, which result in multiple approximants of the PN waveforms. Due to the poor convergence of the PN expansion, these approximants tend to differ from each other during the late inspiral. Which of these approximants should be chosen as templates for detection and parameter estimation of GWs from inspiraling co…
In this work we analyze some judiciously chosen solutions of Kerr Black Holes with Scalar Hair (KBHsSH) of special interest for Gravitational Wave (GW) events originated from Extreme Mass Ratio Inspirals (EMRIs). Because of the off-center distribution of energy density, these spacetimes are warped in such a way that not all metric functions behave monotonically on the equatorial plane as in the exterior region of Kerr black holes (KBHs). This has great impact on the orbital parameters, which in turn affects the imprints on signals descendant from EMRIs in a adiabatic evolution. By investigatin…
We use the frequency and time domain Teukolsky formalism to calculate gravitational-wave fluxes from a spinning body on a bound eccentric equatorial orbit around a Kerr black hole. The spinning body is represented as a point particle following the pole-dipole approximation of the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations. Reformulating these equations we are not only able to find the trajectory of a spinning particle in terms of its constants of motion, but also to provide a method to calculate the azimuthal and the radial frequency of this trajectory. Using these orbital quantities, we introduce t…
In this article, we investigate the motion of a spinning particle at a constant inclination, different from the equatorial plane, around a Kerr black hole. We mainly explore the possibilities of stable circular orbits for different spin supplementary conditions. The Mathission-Papapetrau's equations are extensively applied and solved within the framework of linear spin approximation. We explicitly show that for a given spin vector of the form $S^{a} = \left(0,S^r,S^θ,0\right)$ , there exists an unique circular orbit at $(r_c,θ_c)$ defined by the simultaneous minima of energy, angular momentum …
We describe a general procedure to generate spinning, precessing waveforms that include inspiral, merger and ringdown stages in the effective-one-body (EOB) approach. The procedure uses a precessing frame in which precession-induced amplitude and phase modulations are minimized, and an inertial frame, aligned with the spin of the final black hole, in which we carry out the matching of the inspiral-plunge to merger-ringdown waveforms. As a first application, we build spinning, precessing EOB waveforms for the gravitational modes l=2 such that in the nonprecessing limit those waveforms agree wit…
In this paper we discuss the development of a fast and accurate waveform model for the quasi-circular orbital evolution of extreme-mass-ratio-inspirals (EMRIs). This model simply employs the data of a few numerical Teukoulsky-based energy fluxes and waveforms to fit out a set of polynomials for the entire fluxes and waveforms. These obtained polynomials are accurate enough in the entire evolution domain, and much more accurate than the resummation post-Newtonian (PN) energy fluxes and waveforms, especially when the spin of a black hole becomes large. The dynamical equation we adopted for orbit…
We construct effective-one-body waveform models suitable for data analysis with LISA for extreme-mass ratio inspirals in quasi-circular, equatorial orbits about a spinning supermassive black hole. The accuracy of our model is established through comparisons against frequency-domain, Teukolsky-based waveforms in the radiative approximation. The calibration of eight high-order post-Newtonian parameters in the energy flux suffices to obtain a phase and fractional amplitude agreement of better than 1 radian and 1 % respectively over a period between 2 and 6 months depending on the system considere…
We examine the evolution, under gravitational radiation reaction, of slightly eccentric equatorial orbits of point particles around Kerr black holes. Our method involves numerical integration of the Sasaki-Nakamura equation. It is discovered that such orbits decrease in eccentricity throughout most of the inspiral, until shortly before the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO), when a critical radius $r_{\text{crit}}$ is reached beyond which the inspiralling orbits increase in eccentricity. It is shown that the number of orbits remaining in this last (eccentricity increasing) phase of the ins…
Ori and Thorne have discussed the duration and observability (with LISA) of the transition from circular, equatorial inspiral to plunge for stellar-mass objects into supermassive ($10^{5}-10^{8}M_{\odot}$) Kerr black holes. We extend their computation to eccentric Kerr equatorial orbits. Even with orbital parameters near-exactly determined, we find that there is no universal length for the transition; rather, the length of the transition depends sensitively -- essentially randomly -- on initial conditions. Still, Ori and Thorne's zero-eccentricity results are essentially an upper bound on the …
We first use five non-spinning and two mildly spinning (chi_i \simeq -0.44, +0.44) numerical-relativity waveforms of black-hole binaries and calibrate an effective-one-body (EOB) model for non-precessing spinning binaries, notably its dynamics and the dominant (2,2) gravitational-wave mode. Then, we combine the above results with recent outcomes of small-mass-ratio simulations produced by the Teukolsky equation and build a prototype EOB model for detection purposes, which is capable of generating inspiral-merger-ringdown waveforms for non-precessing spinning black-hole binaries with any mass r…
Comparing second-order gravitational self-force and effective-one-body waveforms from inspiralling, quasi-circular black hole binaries with a non-spinning primary and a spinning secondary
A new family of restricted post-Newtonian-accurate waveforms, termed TaylorEt approximants, was recently proposed for searching gravitational wave (GW) signals from inspiraling non-spinning compact binaries having arbitrary mass-ratios. We perform detailed fitting factor (FF) studies to probe if the TaylorEt (3.5PN) signals for non-spinning comparable mass compact binaries can be effectually and faithfully searched with TaylorT1, TaylorT4, and TaylorF2 (3.5PN) templates in LIGO, Advanced LIGO, and Virgo interferometers. We observe that a good fraction of the templates, which by choice are from…
In this thesis we consider the data analysis problem of detecting gravitational waves emitted by inspiraling binary systems. Detection of gravitational waves will open a new window on the Universe enabling direct detection of systems such as binary black holes for the first time. In the first Chapter we show how gravitational waves are derived from Einstein's General theory of Relativity and discuss the emission of gravitational waves from inspiraling binaries and how this radiation may be detected using laser interferometers. Around two thirds of stars inhabit binary systems. As they orbit ea…
Results are presented from high-precision computations of the orbital evolution and emitted gravitational waves for a stellar-mass object spiraling into a massive black hole in a slowly shrinking, circular, equatorial orbit. The focus of these computations is inspiral near the innermost stable circular orbit (isco)---more particularly, on orbits for which the angular velocity Omega is 0.03 < Omega/Omega_{isco} < 1. The computations are based on the Teukolsky-Sasaki-Nakamura formalism, and the results are tabulated in a set of functions that are of order unity and represent relativistic correct…
Compact binary systems with black holes are the primary sources of interferometric advanced gravitational wave detectors. Astrophysical models suggest finite possibility of binary systems with appreciable non-zero eccentricity in the dense stellar environment like globular clusters and galactic nuclei. While most of the compact binary measurements have not shown appreciable eccentricity, constrains on the eccentricity have been placed on few detected events. With increasing sensitivity of the gravitational wave detectors, the eccentric binaries are plausible sources in the gravitational wave w…
We report exotic orbital phenomena of spinning test particles orbiting around a Kerr black hole, i.e., some orbits of spinning particles are asymmetrical about the equatorial plane. When a nonspinning test particle orbits around a Kerr black hole in a strong field region, due to relativistic orbital precessions, the pattern of trajectories is symmetrical about the equatorial plane of the Kerr black hole. However, the patterns of the spinning particles' orbit are no longer symmetrical about the equatorial plane for some orbital configurations and large spins. We argue that these asymmetrical pa…
Inspiral signals from binary compact objects (black holes and neutron stars) are primary targets of the ongoing searches by ground-based gravitational-wave interferometers (LIGO, Virgo, GEO-600 and TAMA-300). We present parameter-estimation simulations for inspirals of black-hole--neutron-star binaries using Markov-chain Monte-Carlo methods. For the first time, we have both estimated the parameters of a binary inspiral source with a spinning component and determined the accuracy of the parameter estimation, for simulated observations with ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. We demonstra…
We calculate the kick generated by an eccentric black hole binary inspiral as it evolves through a resonant orbital configuration where the precession of the system temporarily halts. As a result, the effects of the asymmetric emission of gravitational waves build up coherently over a large number of orbits. Our results are calculate using black hole perturbation theory in the limit where the ratio of the masses of the orbiting objects $ε=m/M$ is small. The resulting kick velocity scales as $ε^{3/2}$, much faster than the $ε^2$ scaling of the kick generated by the final merger. For the most ex…
In this paper, we study the circular orbit of the spinning test particle in the background of a rotating boson star. Using the pole-dipole approximation and neglecting the back-reaction of the spinning test particle on the spacetime, the equation of motion of the spinning test particle is described by the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equation. We solve this equation under the Tulczyjew spin-supplementary condition and obtain the four-momentum and four-velocity of the spinning test particle. Quite different from the spinless particle, the effective potential of the spinning particle with zero orb…
We establish the set of independent variables suitable to monitor the complicated evolution of the spinning compact binary during the inspiral. Our approach is valid up to the second post-Newtonian order, including leading order spin-orbit, spin-spin and mass quadrupol-mass monopole effects, for generic (noncircular, nonspherical) orbits. Then we analyze the conservative spin dynamics in terms of these variables. We prove that the only binary black hole configuration allowing for spin precessions with equal angular velocities about a common intantaneous axis roughly aligned to the normal of th…
Comparing effective-one-body and Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon results for a spinning test particle on circular equatorial orbits around a Kerr black hole
We report on the methods and results of the first dedicated search for gravitational waves emitted during the inspiral of compact binaries with spinning component bodies. We analyze 788 hours of data collected during the third science run (S3) of the LIGO detectors. We searched for binary systems using a detection template family designed specially to capture the effects of the spin-induced precession of the orbital plane. We present details of the techniques developed to enable this search for spin-modulated gravitational waves, highlighting the differences between this and other recent searc…
The Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) equations describe the motion of an extended test body in general relativity. This system of equations, though, is underdetermined and has to be accompanied by constraining supplementary conditions, even in its simplest version, which is the pole-dipole approximation corresponding to a spinning test body. In particular, imposing a spin supplementary condition (SSC) fixes the center of the mass of the spinning body, i.e. the centroid of the body. In the present study, we examine whether characteristic features of the centroid of a spinning test body, moving …
We calculate the eccentricity dependence of the high-order post-Newtonian (PN) series for the generalized redshift invariant $\langle u^t \rangle_τ$ for eccentric-orbit extreme-mass-ratio inspirals on a Schwarzschild background. These results are calculated within first-order black hole perturbation theory (BHPT) using Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli (RWZ) gauge. Our \textsc{Mathematica} code is based on a familiar procedure, using PN expansion of the Mano-Suzuki-Takasugi (MST) analytic function formalism for $l$ modes up to a certain maximum and then using a direct general-$l$ PN expansion of the RWZ e…
After considering the reference case of the motion of spinning test bodies in the equatorial plane of the Schwarzschild space-time, we generalize the results to the case of the motion of a spinning particle in the equatorial plane of the Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time. Specifically, we obtain the loci of turning points of the particle in this plane. We show that the cosmological constant affect the particle motion when the particle distance from the black hole is of the order of the inverse square root of the cosmological constant.
We extend the Ori-Thorne-Kesden procedure to consistently describe the non-quasi-circular transition around the ISCO from inspiral to plunge into a black hole of arbitrary spin, including near-extremal. We identify that for moderate or high spins the transition is governed by the Painlevé transcendent equation of the first kind while for extremely high spins it is governed by a self-similar solution to the Korteweg-de Vries equation. We match the transition solution at leading order in the high spin limit with the analytical quasi-circular inspiral in the near-horizon region. We also show that…
A precessing source frame, constructed using the Newtonian orbital angular momentum ${\bf L_{\rm N}}$, can be invoked to model inspiral gravitational waves from generic spinning compact binaries. An attractive feature of such a precessing convention is its ability to remove all spin precession induced modulations from the orbital phase evolution. However, this convention usually employs a post-Newtonian (PN) accurate precessional equation, appropriate for the PN accurate orbital angular momentum ${\bf L}$, to evolve the ${\bf L_{\rm N}}$-based precessing source frame. This influenced us to dev…
This paper formulates, via the Mathisson - Papapetrou - Dixon equations, the system of equations for a test particle with spin when it is orbiting a weak Kerr metric. We shall restrict ourselves to the case of circular orbits with the purpose of comparing our results with the results of the literature. In particular, we solve the set of equations of motion for the case of circular trajectories both spinless and spinning test particles around rotating bodies in equatorial plane. The results obtained are an important guideline for the study of the effects of the particles with spin in rotating g…
We study stability of a circular orbit of a spinning test particle in a Kerr spacetime. We find that some of the circular orbits become unstable in the direction perpendicular to the equatorial plane, although the orbits are still stable in the radial direction. Then for the large spin case ($S < \sim O(1)), the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) appears before the minimum of the effective potential in the equatorial plane disappears. This changes the radius of ISCO and then the frequency of the last circular orbit.
The waveforms from binary black hole mergers include inspiral, merger, and ringdown parts. Usually, the inspiral waveform can be obtained by calibrating from post-Newtonian approximation; The merger and ringdown ones can be gotten from the quasinormal modes with black hole perturbation theory. However, for more general black holes, the calculation of the quasinormal modes is not trivial. In this paper we use the photon sphere to get the quasinormal modes of spinning black holes. Then we connect the ringdown wave with the inspiral part to get full waveforms and compare with the ones from numeri…
We study binary systems in which a stellar mass compact object spirals into a massive black hole, known as extreme mass ratio inspirals, in scenarios with a new fundamental scalar field. Earlier work has shown that, in most interesting such scenarios and to leading order in the mass ratio, the massive black holes can be adequately approximated by the Kerr metric and the imprint of the scalar field on the waveform is fully controlled by the scalar charge of the stellar mass object. Here we use this drastic simplification in the inspiral modelling and consider eccentric equatorial orbits. We stu…
We calculate the eccentricity dependence of the high-order post-Newtonian (PN) expansion of the spin-precession invariant $ψ$ for eccentric-orbit extreme-mass-ratio inspirals with a Schwarzschild primary. The series is calculated in first-order black hole perturbation theory through direct analytic expansion of solutions in the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli formalism, using a code written in \textsc{Mathematica}. Modes with small values of $l$ are found via the Mano-Suzuki-Takasugi (MST) analytic function expansion formalism for solutions to the Regge-Wheeler equation. Large-$l$ solutions are found by…
(Abridged) We revisit the problem of parameter estimation of gravitational-wave chirp signals from inspiralling non-spinning compact binaries in the light of the recent extension of the post-Newtonian (PN) phasing formula to order $(v/c)^7$ beyond the leading Newtonian order. We study in detail the implications of higher post-Newtonian orders from 1PN up to 3.5PN in steps of 0.5PN ($\sim v/c$), and examine their convergence. In both initial and advanced detectors the estimation of the chirp mass (${\cal M}$) and symmetric mass ratio ($η$) improve at higher PN orders but oscillate with every ha…
We present a new computation of the asymptotic gravitational wave energy fluxes emitted by a {\it spinning} particle in circular equatorial orbits about a Kerr black hole. The particle dynamics is computed in the pole-dipole approximation, solving the Mathisson-Papapetrou equations with the Tulczyjew spin-supplementary-condition. The fluxes are computed, for the first time, by solving the 2+1 Teukolsky equation in the time-domain using hyperboloidal and horizon-penetrating coordinates. Denoting by $M$ the black hole mass and by $μ$ the particle mass, we cover dimensionless background spins $a/…
Using two recent techniques giving non-perturbative re-summed estimates of the damping and of the conservative part of the dynamics of two-body systems, we describe the transition between adiabatic inspiral and plunge in binary non-spinning black holes moving along quasi-circular orbits.
High-order post-Newtonian expansion of the generalized redshift invariant for eccentric-orbit, equatorial extreme-mass-ratio inspirals with a spinning primary
We study the performance of various analytical frequency-domain templates for detection and parameter estimation of gravitational waves from spin-precessing, quasi-circular, compact binary inspirals. We begin by assessing the extent to which non-spinning, spin-aligned, and the new (analytical, frequency-domain, small-spin) double-precessing frequency-domain templates can be used to detect signals from such systems. For effective, dimensionless spin values above $0.2$, the use of non-spinning or spin-aligned templates for detection purposes will result in a loss of up to $30%$ of all events, wh…
We report the construction of a three-dimensional template bank for the search for gravitational waves from inspiralling binaries consisting of spinning compact objects. The parameter space consists of two dimensions describing the mass parameters and one "reduced-spin" parameter, which describes the secular (non-precessing) spin effects in the waveform. The template placement is based on an efficient stochastic algorithm and makes use of the semi-analytical computation of a metric in the parameter space. We demonstrate that for "low-mass" ($m_1 + m_2 \lesssim 12\,M_\odot$) binaries, this temp…
A test particle of mass mu on a bound geodesic of a Kerr black hole of mass M >> mu will slowly inspiral as gravitational radiation extracts energy and angular momentum from its orbit. This inspiral can be considered adiabatic when the orbital period is much shorter than the timescale on which energy is radiated, and quasi-circular when the radial velocity is much less than the azimuthal velocity. Although the inspiral always remains adiabatic provided mu << M, the quasi-circular approximation breaks down as the particle approaches the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). In this paper, we …
We construct a new global, fully analytic, approximate spacetime which accurately describes the dynamics of non-precessing, spinning black hole binaries during the inspiral phase of the relativistic merger process. This approximate solution of the vacuum Einstein's equations can be obtained by asymptotically matching perturbed Kerr solutions near the two black holes to a post-Newtonian metric valid far from the two black holes. This metric is then matched to a post-Minkowskian metric even farther out in the wave zone. The procedure of asymptotic matching is generalized to be valid on all spati…
We present fully general relativistic simulations of the quasi-circular inspiral and merger of charged, non-spinning, binary black holes with charge-to-mass ratio $λ\le 0.3$. We discuss the key features that enabled long term and stable evolutions of these binaries. We also present a formalism for computing the angular momentum carried away by electromagnetic waves, and the electromagnetic contribution to black-hole horizon properties. We implement our formalism and present the results for the first time in numerical-relativity simulations. In addition, we compare our full non-linear solutions…
The self-force program aims at accurately modeling relativistic two-body systems with a small mass ratio (SMR). In the context of the effective-one-body (EOB) framework, current results from this program can be used to determine the effective metric components at linear order in the mass ratio, resumming post-Newtonian (PN) dynamics around the test-particle limit in the process. It was shown in [Akcay et al., Phys. Rev. D 86 (2012)] that, in the original (standard) EOB gauge, the SMR contribution to the metric component $g^\text{eff}_{tt}$ exhibits a coordinate singularity at the light-ring (L…
