We investigate the influence of the quadrupole moment of a rotating source on the motion of a test particle in the strong field regime. For this purpose the Hartle-Thorne metric, that is an approximate solution of vacuum Einstein field equations that describes the exterior of any slowly rotating, stationary and axially symmetric body, is used. The metric is given with accuracy up to the second order terms in the body's angular momentum, and first order terms in its quadrupole moment. We give, with the same accuracy, analytic equations for equatorial circular geodesics in the Hartle-Thorne spacetime and integrate them numerically.
The Hartle-Thorne metric is an exact solution of vacuum Einstein field equations that describes the exterior of any slowly and rigidly rotating, stationary and axially symmetric body. The metric is given with accuracy up to the second order terms in the body's angular momentum, and first order in its quadrupole moment. We give, with the same accuracy, analytic formulae for circular geodesics in the Hartle-Thorne metrics. They describe angular velocity, angular momentum, energy, epicyclic frequencies, shear, vorticity and Fermi-Walker precession. These quantities are relevant to several astroph…
In this work, we investigate the correspondence between the Erez-Rosen and Hartle-Thorne solutions. We explicitly show how to establish the relationship and find the coordinate transformations between the two metrics. For this purpose the two metrics must have the same approximation and describe the gravitational field of static objects. Since both the Erez-Rosen and the Hartle-Thorne solutions are particular solutions of a more general solution, the Zipoy-Voorhees transformation is applied to the exact Erez-Rosen metric in order to obtain a generalized solution in terms of the Zipoy-Voorhees …
Hartle's slow rotation formalism is developed in the presence of a cosmological constant. We find the generalisation of the Hartle-Thorne vacuum metric, the Hartle-Thorne-(anti)-de Sitter metric, and find that it is always asymptotically (anti)-de Sitter. Next we consider Wahlquist's rotating perfect fluid interior solution in Hartle's formalism and discuss its matching to the Hartle-Thorne-(anti)-de Sitter metric. It is known that the Wahlquist solution cannot be matched to an asymptotically flat region and therefore does not provide a model of an isolated rotating body in this context. Howev…
Using stellar structure calculations in the Hartle-Thorne approximation, we derive analytic expressions connecting the ellipticity of the stellar surface to the compactness, the spin angular momentum, and the quadrupole moment of the spacetime. We also obtain empirical relations between the compactness, the spin angular momentum, and the spacetime quadrupole. Our formulae reproduce the results of numerical calculations to within a few percent and help reduce the number of parameters necessary to model the observational appearance of moderately spinning neutron stars. This is sufficient for com…
The Hartle-Thorne metric defines a reliable spacetime for most astrophysical purposes, for instance for the simulation of slowly rotating stars. Solving the Einstein field equations, we added terms of second order in the quadrupole moment to its post-linear version in order to compare it with solutions found by Blanchet in the frame of the multi-polar post-Minkowskian framework. We first derived the extended Hartle-Thorne metric in harmonic coordinates and then showed agreement with the corresponding post-linear metric from Blanchet. We also found a coordinate transformation from the post-line…

We study the motion of test particles in the gravitational field of a rotating and deformed object within the framework of the adiabatic theory. For this purpose, the Hartle-Thorne metric written in harmonic coordinates is employed in the post-Newtonian approximation where the adiabatic theory is valid. As a result, we obtain the perihelion shift formula for test particles orbiting on the equatorial plane of a rotating and deformed object. Based on the perihelion shift expression, we show that the principle of superposition is valid for the individual effects of the gravitational source mass, …
The data from the event horizon telescope have provided a novel view of the vicinity of the horizon of a black hole (BH), by imaging the region around the light-ring. They have also raised hopes for measuring in the near future, features of the image (or the shadow) related to higher order effects of photons traveling in these regions, such as the appearance of higher order bright rings. While the prospect of measuring these fine features of Kerr BHs is very interesting in itself, there are some even more intriguing prospects for observing novel features of possible non-Kerr objects, in the ca…
We study stationary axially symmetric solutions of the Einstein vacuum field equations that can be used to describe the gravitational field of astrophysical compact objects in the limiting case of slow rotation and slight deformation. We derive explicitly the exterior Sedrakyan-Chubaryan approximate solution, and express it in analytical form, which makes it practical in the context of astrophysical applications. In the limiting case of vanishing angular momentum, the solution reduces to the well-known Schwarzschild solution in vacuum. We demonstrate that the new solution is equivalent to the …
Extreme-mass-ratio inspirals (EMRIs) and intermediate-mass-ratio inspirals (IMRIs)--binaries in which a stellar-mass object spirals into a massive black hole or other massive, compact body--are important sources of gravitational waves for LISA and LIGO, respectively. Thorne has speculated that the waves from EMRIs and IMRIs encode, in principle, all the details of (i) the central body's spacetime geometry (metric), (ii) the tidal coupling (energy and angular momentum exchange) between the central body and orbiting object, and (iii) the evolving orbital elements. Fintan Ryan has given a first p…
In 1985 Thorne and Hartle used the Landau-Lifshitz pseudotensor to demonstrate the tidal heating and angular momentum flux for a black hole. Later in 2004, Poisson used the gravitational perturbation method to study a black hole and obtained the same result. Poisson proposed a new idea, that the mass quardupole moment and current quadrupole moment can be written as the rate of change of the tidal gravitational field. Inspired by these two papers, we use the method of Thorne and Hartle to study other classical pseudotensors: Einstein, Bergmann-Thomson, Papapetrou and Weinberg. Moreover, we also…
Region of trapped null geodesics hidden inside of extremely compact objects is of astrophysical importance because of trapping of gravitational waves, or neutrinos. The trapping effect of null geodesics was extensively studied for spherically symmetric extremely compact objects. Recently, influence of rotation of the extremely compact objects on the trapping of null geodesics was treated in the simplest possible model of internal linearised \mbox{Hartle--Thorne} spacetime with uniform energy density distribution and uniform emissivity distribution of null geodesics. Here we extend the study of…
We study black hole solutions at first order in the Hartle-Thorne slow-rotation approximation in Horndeski gravity theories. We derive the equations of motion including also cases where the scalar depends linearly on time. In the Hartle-Thorne formalism, all first-order rotational corrections are described by a single frame-dragging function. We show that the frame-dragging function is exactly the same as in general relativity for all known black hole solutions in shift symmetric Horndeski theories, with the exception of theories with a linear coupling to the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. Our result…
An approximate realistic metric representing the spacetime of neutron stars is obtained by perturbing the Kerr metric. This metric has five parameters, namely the mass, spin or angular momentum, mass quadrupole, spin octupole and mass hexadecapole. Moreover, a version of the Hartle-Thorne metric containing these parameters is constructed by means of a series transformation between these spacetimes and solving the Einstein field equations. The form of the Pappas metric in Schwarzschild spherical coordinates is found. The three relativistic multipole structures are compared.
A new Kerr-like metric with quadrupole moment is obtained by means of perturbing the Kerr spacetime. By comparison with the exterior Hartle-Thorne metric, it is showed that it could be matched to an interior solution. This metric may represent the spacetime of an astrophysical object.
We perform an observational test of no-hair theorem using quasi-periodic oscillations within the relativistic precession model. Two well motivated metrics we apply are Kerr-Q and Hartle-Thorne metrics in which the quadrupole is the parameter that possibly encodes deviations from the Kerr black hole. The expressions for the quasi-periodic frequencies are derived before comparing the models with the observation. We encounter a degeneracy in constraining spin and quadrupole parameters that makes it difficult to measure their values. In particular, we here propose a novel test of no-hair theorem b…
We analytically determine the quasinormal mode (QNM) frequencies of a black hole with quadrupole moment in the eikonal limit using the light-ring method. The generalized black holes that are discussed in this work possess arbitrary quadrupole and higher mass moments in addition to mass and angular momentum. Static collapsed configurations with mass and quadrupole moment are treated in detail and the QNM frequencies associated with two such configurations are evaluated to linear order in the quadrupole moment. Furthermore, we touch upon the treatment of rotating systems. In particular, the gene…
A new approximate metric representing the spacetime of a rotating deformed body is obtained by perturbing the Kerr metric to include til the second order of the quadrupole moment. It has a simple form, because is Kerr-like. Its Taylor expansion form coincides with second order quadrupole metrics with slow rotation already found. Moreover, it can be transformed to an improved Hartle-Thorne metric, this guarantees its validity to be useful in studying compact object, and that it is possible to find an inner solution.
We investigate equatorial geodesics in the gravitational field of a rotating and deformed source described by the approximate Hartle-Thorne metric. In the case of massive particles, we derive within the same approximation analytic expressions for the orbital angular velocity, the specific angular momentum and energy, and the radii of marginally stable and marginally bound circular orbits. Moreover, we calculate the orbital angular velocity and the radius of lightlike circular geodesics. We study numerically the frame dragging effect and the influence of the quadrupolar deformation of the sourc…
The neutrino oscillations in the field of a rotating deformed mass is investigated. The phase shift is evaluated in the case of weak field limit, slow rotation and small deformation. To this aim the Hartle-Thorne metric is used, which is an approximate solution of the vacuum Einstein equations accurate to second order in the rotation parameter $a/M$ and to first order in the mass quadrupole moment $q$. Implications on atmospheric, solar and astrophysical neutrinos are discussed.
A new Kerr-like metric with quadrupole moment is obtained by means of perturbing the Kerr spacetime. The form of this new metric is simple as the Kerr metric. By comparison with the exterior Hartle-Thorne metric, it is shown that it could be matched to an interior solution. This approximate metric may represent the spacetime of a real astrophysical object with any Kerr rotation parameter a and slightly deformed.
We investigate the hyperbolic scattering of test particles, spinning test particles and particles with spin-induced quadrupolar structure by a Kerr black hole in the ultrarelativistic regime. We also study how the features of the scattering process modify if the source of the background gravitational field is endowed with a nonzero mass quadrupole moment as described by the (approximate) Hartle-Thorne solution. We compute the scattering angle either in closed analytical form, when possible, or as a power series of the (dimensionless) inverse impact parameter. It is a function of the parameters…
The properties of light rays around compact objects surrounded by a plasma are affected by both strong gravitational fields described by a general-relativistic spacetime and by a dispersive and refractive medium, characterized by the density distribution of the plasma. We study these effects employing the relativistic Hamiltonian formalism under the assumption of stationarity and axisymmetry. The necessary and sufficient conditions on the metric and on the plasma frequency are formulated, such that the rays can be analytically determined from a fully separated Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We demo…
The 4-parameter exact solution presumably describing the exterior gravitational field of a generic neutron star is presented in a concise explicit form defined by only three potentials. In the equatorial plane, the metric functions of the solution are found to be given by particularly simple expressions that make them very suitable for the use in concrete applications. Following Pappas and Apostolatos, we perform a comparison of the multipole structure of the solution with the multipole moments of the known physically realistic Berti-Stergioulas numerical models of neutron stars to argue that …
Extremely compact objects containing a region of trapped null geodesics could be of astrophysical relevance due to trapping of neutrinos with consequent impact on cooling processes or trapping of gravitational waves. These objects have previously been studied under the assumption of spherical symmetry. In the present paper, we consider a simple generalization by studying trapping of null geodesics in the framework of the Hartle-Thorne slow-rotation approximation taken to first order in the angular velocity, and considering a uniform-density object with uniform emissivity for the null geodesics…
We have evaluated the centrifugal force acting on a fluid element and the ellipticity of the fluid configuration, which is slowly rotating, using the Hartle-Thorne solution for different equations of state. The centrifugal force shows a maximum in every case, whereas the reversal in sign could be seen in only one case, and the system becomes unstable in other cases. The ellipticity as calculated from the usual definition shows maxima, whereas the definition obtained from the equilibration of the inertial forces, shows a negative behaviour, indicating that the system is prolate and not oblate. …
Neutron stars spinning at moderate rates (~300-600Hz) become oblate in shape and acquire a nonzero quadrupole moment. In this paper, we calculate profiles of atomic features from such neutron stars using a ray-tracing algorithm in the Hartle-Thorne approximation. We show that line profiles acquire cores that are much narrower than the widths expected from pure Doppler effects for a large range of observer inclinations. As a result, the effects of both the oblateness and the quadrupole moments of neutron stars need to be taken into account when aiming to measure neutron star radii from rotation…
Photon circular orbits, an extreme case of light deflection, are among the hallmarks of black holes and are known to play a central role in a variety of phenomena related to these extreme objects. The very existence of such orbits when motion is not confined in the equatorial plane, i.e. spherical orbits, is indeed a special property of the separable Kerr metric and may not occur, for instance, in the spacetime of other more speculative ultracompact objects. In this paper we consider a general stationary-axisymmetric spacetime and examine under what circumstances spherical or more general, var…
A new six-parametric, axisymmetric and asymptotically flat exact solution of Einstein-Maxwell field equations having reflection symmetry is presented. It has arbitrary physical parameters of mass, angular momentum, mass--quadrupole moment, current octupole moment, electric charge and magnetic dipole, so it can represent the exterior field of a rotating, deformed, magnetized and charged object; some properties of the closed-form analytic solution such as its multipolar structure, electromagnetic fields and singularities are also presented. In the vacuum case, this analytic solution is matched t…
We derive the multipole moments of the Kerr-NUT black hole spacetime using the Geroch-Hansen formalism, even though the spacetime is not asymptotically flat. Intriguingly, in the presence of the NUT charge, the absence of reflection symmetry about the equatorial plane, leads to mass and spin multipole moments of all orders, in stark contrast to Kerr-like spacetimes. This leads to a drastic departure of the multipolar structure of a compact object with NUT charge, whose implications for gravitational wave observations have been explored. Our analysis of multipole moments for the Kerr-NUT spacet…
We present an exact electrovacuum solution of Einstein-Maxwell equations with infinite sets of multipole moments which can be used to describe the exterior gravitational field of a rotating charged mass distribution. We show that in the special case of a slowly rotating and slightly deformed body, the exterior solution can be matched to an interior solution belonging to the Hartle-Thorne family of approximate solutions. To search for exact interior solutions, we propose to use the derivatives of the curvature eigenvalues to formulate a $C^3-$matching condition from which the minimum radius can…
The nonlinear superposition of the delta-metric and the Kerr metric results in delta-Kerr metric that represents a deformed Kerr black hole with delta = 1 + q, where q > 0 is proportional to the nonrelativistic quadrupole moment of the collapsed configuration. We study this spacetime and determine q_{+} such that for q, 0 < q < q_{+}, the outer spacetime singularity remains a null hypersurface. In this case, delta-Kerr spacetime represents a generalized black hole, namely, an asymptotically flat, stationary and axisymmetric vacuum solution of general relativity for which the outer singularity …
We compare three different models of rotating neutron star spacetimes: the Hartle-Thorne (HT) slow-rotation approximation at second order in rotation, the exact analytic vacuum solution of Manko et al. and a numerical solution of the full Einstein equations. We integrate the HT structure equations for five representative equations of state. Then we match the HT models to numerical solutions of the Einstein equations, imposing that the mass and angular momentum of the models be the same. We estimate the limits of validity of the HT expansion computing relative errors in the spacetime's quadrupo…
A moderately spinning neutron star acquires an oblate shape and a spacetime with a significant quadrupole moment. These two properties affect its apparent surface area for an observer at infinity, as well as the lightcurve arising from a hot spot on its surface. In this paper, we develop a ray-tracing algorithm to calculate the apparent surface areas of moderately spinning neutron stars making use of the Hartle-Thorne metric. This analytic metric allows us to calculate various observables of the neutron star in a way that depends only on its macroscopic properties and not on the details of its…
In this chapter we review the recent results on the equilibrium configurations of static and uniformly rotating neutron stars within the Hartle formalism. We start from the Einstein-Maxwell-Thomas-Fermi equations formulated and extended by Belvedere et al. (2012, 2014). We demonstrate how to conduct numerical integration of these equations for different central densities ${\it ρ}_c$ and angular velocities $Ω$ and compute the static $M^{stat}$ and rotating $M^{rot}$ masses, polar $R_p$ and equatorial $R_{\rm eq}$ radii, eccentricity $ε$, moment of inertia $I$, angular momentum $J$, as well as t…
