Extremely compact objects containing a region of trapped null geodesics could be of astrophysical relevance due to trapping of neutrinos with consequent impact on cooling processes or trapping of gravitational waves. These objects have previously been studied under the assumption of spherical symmetry. In the present paper, we consider a simple generalization by studying trapping of null geodesics in the framework of the Hartle-Thorne slow-rotation approximation taken to first order in the angular velocity, and considering a uniform-density object with uniform emissivity for the null geodesics. We calculate effective potentials and escape cones for the null geodesics and how they depend on the parameters of the spacetimes, and also calculate the "local" and "global" coefficients of efficiency for the trapping. We demonstrate that due to the rotation the trapping efficiency is different for co-rotating and retrograde null geodesics, and that trapping can occur even for $R>3GM/c^2$, contrary to what happens in the absence of rotation.
We study the geometry and dynamics of both isolated and dynamical trapping horizons by considering the allowed variations of their foliating two-surfaces. This provides a common framework that may be used to consider both their possible evolutions and their deformations as well as derive the well-known flux laws. Using this framework, we unify much of what is already known about these objects as well as derive some new results. In particular we characterize and study the "almost-isolated" trapping horizons known as slowly evolving horizons. It is for these horizons that a dynamical first law h…
We study the mechanics of Hayward's trapping horizons, taking isolated horizons as equilibrium states. Zeroth and second laws of dynamic horizon mechanics come from the isolated and trapping horizon formalisms respectively. We derive a dynamical first law by introducing a new perturbative formulation for dynamic horizons in which "slowly evolving" trapping horizons may be viewed as perturbatively non-isolated.
Region of trapped null geodesics hidden inside of extremely compact objects is of astrophysical importance because of trapping of gravitational waves, or neutrinos. The trapping effect of null geodesics was extensively studied for spherically symmetric extremely compact objects. Recently, influence of rotation of the extremely compact objects on the trapping of null geodesics was treated in the simplest possible model of internal linearised \mbox{Hartle--Thorne} spacetime with uniform energy density distribution and uniform emissivity distribution of null geodesics. Here we extend the study of…
We present dynamical properties of linear waves and null geodesics valid for Kerr and Kerr-de Sitter black holes and their stationary perturbations. The two are intimately linked by the geometric optics approximation. For the nullgeodesic flow the key property is the r-normal hyperbolicity of the trapped set and for linear waves it is the distribution of quasi-normal modes: the exact quantization conditions do not hold for perturbations but the bounds on decay rates and the statistics of frequencies are still valid.
We study behaviour of gravitational waves in the recently introduced general relativistic polytropic spheres containing a region of trapped null geodesics extended around radius of the stable null circular geodesic that can exist for the polytropic index $N>2.138$ and the relativistic parameter, giving ratio of the central pressure $p_\mathrm{c}$ to the central energy density $ρ_\mathrm{c}$, higher than $σ= 0.677$. In the trapping zones of such polytropes, the effective potential of the axial gravitational wave perturbations resembles those related to the ultracompact uniform density objects, …

Bearing in mind our previous study on asymptotic behavior of null geodesics near future null infinity, we analyze the behavior of geometrical quantities such as a certain extrinsic curvature and Riemann tensor in the Bondi coordinates. In the sense of asymptotics, the condition for an $r$-constant hypersurface to be a photon surface is shown to be controlled by a key quantity that determines the fate of photons initially emitted in angular directions. As a consequence, in four dimensions, such a non-expanding photon surface can be realized even near future null infinity in the presence of enor…
Slowly evolving horizons are trapping horizons that are "almost" isolated horizons. This paper reviews their definition and discusses several spacetimes containing such structures. These include certain Vaidya and Tolman-Bondi solutions as well as (perturbatively) tidally distorted black holes. Taking into account the associated mass scales, they also suggest that slowly evolving horizons are the norm rather than the exception in astrophysical processes that involve stellar-scale black holes.
We study a semilinear equation with derivatives satisfying a null condition on slowly rotating Kerr spacetimes. We prove that given sufficiently small initial data, the solution exists globally in time and decays with a quantitative rate to the trivial solution. The proof uses the robust vector field method. It makes use of the decay properties of the linear wave equation on Kerr spacetime, in particular the improved decay rates in the region $\{r\leq \frac{t}{4}\}$.
We demonstrate that in the framework of standard general relativity polytropic spheres with properly fixed polytropic index $n$ and relativistic parameter $σ$, giving ratio of the central pressure $p_\mathrm{c}$ to the central energy density $ρ_\mathrm{c}$, can contain region of trapped null geodesics. Such trapping polytropes can exist for $n > 2.138$ and they are generally much more extended and massive than the observed neutron stars. We show that in the $n$--$σ$ parameter space the region of allowed trapping increase with polytropic index for interval of physical interest $2.138 < n < 4$. …
We solve Einstein's equations for slowly-rotating gravitational condensate stars (gravastars) up to second order in the rotation by expanding about the spherically symmetric gravastar with de Sitter interior and Schwarzschild exterior matched at their common horizon. Requiring that the perturbations are finite on the null surface reduces the exterior geometry to that of a Kerr black hole, implying that a slowly rotating gravastar cannot be distinguished from a Kerr black hole by any measurement or observation restricted to the macroscopic spacetime exterior to the horizon. We determine the int…
We prove that, in a class of spherically symmetric spacetimes exhibiting stable trapping of null geodesics, linear waves cannot (uniformly) decay faster than logarithmically. When these linear waves are treated as a model for nonlinear perturbations, this slow decay is highly suggestive of nonlinear instability. We also prove that, in a large class of asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric spacetimes, logarithmic decay actually holds as a uniform upper bound. In the presence of stable trapping, this result is therefore the best one can obtain. In addition, we provide an application of thes…
We study the superradiant instability of slowly rotating Kerr-Newman (sKN) black holes under a charged massive scalar perturbation. These black holes resemble closer the Reissner-Nordström black holes than the Kerr-Newman black holes. We compute the negative absorption cross section of a massive scalar for superradiant scattering in the low frequency limit. From the scalar potential analysis, we find that the superradiant instability is not allowed in the sKN black holes because the condition for a trapping well is not compatible with the superradiance condition. However, the rate of energy ex…
The deformation equation of a spacelike submanifold with an arbitrary codimension is given by a general construction without using local frames. In the case of codimension-1, this equation reduces to the evolution equation of the extrinsic curvature of a spacelike hypersurface. In the more interesting case of codimension-2, after selecting a local null frame, this deformation equation reduces to the well known (cross) focusing equations. We show how the thermodynamics of trapping horizons is related to these deformation equations in two different formalisms: with and without introducing quasil…
In gravitational collapse leading to black hole formation, trapping horizons typically develop inside the contracting matter. Classically, an ingoing trapping horizon moves towards the centre where it reaches a curvature singularity, while an outgoing horizon moves towards the surface of the star where it becomes an isolated, null horizon. However, strong quantum effects at high curvature close to the centre could modify the classical picture substantially, e.g. by deflecting the ingoing horizon to larger radii, until it eventually reunites with the outgoing horizon. We here analyse some exist…
We consider null geodesics in the exterior region of a subextremal Kerr spacetime. We show that most well-known fundamental properties of null geodesics can be represented on one plot. In particular, one can see immediately that the ergoregion and trapping are separated in phase space. Furthermore, we show that from the point of view of any timelike observer outside of the black hole, trapping can be understood as a smooth set of spacelike directions on the celestial sphere of the observer. Finally, we discuss some applications of these insights.
In this paper, we investigate the properties of the Lense-Thirring precession frequency and periastron precession of the relativistic bound orbits in slowly rotating naked singularity spacetimes. We show that the precession frequencies of a stationary test gyroscope are quite unique in slowly rotating naked singularity spacetimes, and therefore, one can easily distinguish them from the slowly rotating Kerr black hole spacetime. On the other hand, we also show that in slowly rotating Joshi-Malafarina-Narayan (JMN1) naked singularity spacetime, negative precession of the timelike bound orbits is…
An identity is derived from Einstein equation for any hypersurface H which can be foliated by spacelike two-dimensional surfaces. In the case where the hypersurface is null, this identity coincides with the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes-like equation obtained by Damour in the membrane approach to a black hole event horizon. In the case where H is spacelike or null and the 2-surfaces are marginally trapped, this identity applies to Hayward's trapping horizons and to the related dynamical horizons recently introduced by Ashtekar and Krishnan. The identity involves a normal fundamental form (norm…
We explore various aspects of dynamical black holes defined by a future outer trapping horizon in $n(\ge 5)$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. In the present paper, we assume that the spacetime has symmetries corresponding to the isometries of an $(n-2)$-dimensional maximally symmetric space and the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant is non-negative. Depending on the existence or absence of the general relativistic limit, solutions are classified into GR and non-GR branches, respectively. Assuming the null energy condition on matter fields, we show that a future outer trapping horizon in …

We complete the stability study of general relativistic spherically symmetric polytropic perfect fluid spheres, concentrating attention to the newly discovered polytropes containing region of trapped null geodesics. We compare the methods of treating the dynamical stability based on the equation governing infinitesimal radial pulsations of the polytropes and the related Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue equation for the eigenmodes governing the pulsations, to the methods of stability analysis based on the energetic considerations. Both methods are applied to determine the stability of the polytropes …
Extremely compact objects trap gravitational waves or neutrinos, assumed to move along null geodesics in the trapping regions. The trapping of neutrinos was extensively studied for spherically symmetric extremely compact objects constructed under the simplest approximation of the uniform energy density distribution, with radius located under the photosphere of the external spacetime; in addition, uniform emissivity distribution of neutrinos was assumed in these studies. Here we extend the studies of the neutrino trapping for the case of the extremely compact Tolman VII objects representing the…
We study the dominant late-time behaviors of massive scalar fields in static and spherically symmetric spacetimes. Considering the field evolution in the far zone where the gravitational field is weak, we show under which conditions the massive field oscillates with an amplitude that decays slowly as $t^{-5/6}$ at very late times, as previously found in (say) the Schwarzschild case. Our conclusion is that this long-lived oscillating tail is generally observed at timelike infinity in black hole spacetimes, while it may not be able to survive if the central object is a normal star. We also discu…
We study the near-horizon spacetime for isolated and dynamical trapping horizons (equivalently marginally outer trapped tubes). The metric is expanded relative to an ingoing Gaussian null coordinate and the terms of that expansion are explicitly calculated to second order. For the spacelike case, knowledge of the intrinsic and extrinsic geometry of the (dynamical) horizon is sufficient to determine the near-horizon spacetime, while for the null case (an isolated horizon) more information is needed. In both cases spacetime is allowed to be of arbitrary dimension and the formalism accomodates bo…
In the Carlip-Majhi-Padmanabhan approach, we calculate microscopic entropy of trapping (apparent) horizon of the FRW metric. We solve Killing equations for $t,r$ part of the metric without fixing {\it a piori} the form of the scaling factor $a(t)$ which is determined from the requirement of consistency of Killing equations. Further restrictions on the form of the Killing vector follow from the requirement that Killing vector is null at the trapping horizon at all $t$. Applying the technique used to calculate microscopic entropy of Killing horizons, we calculate microscopic entropy of trapping …
It has been argued that supersymmetric microstate geometries are classically unstable. One argument for instability involves considering the motion of a massive particle near the ergosurface of such a spacetime. It is shown that the instability can be triggered by a particle that starts arbitrarily far from the ergosurface. Another argument for instability is related to the phenomenon of stable trapping of null geodesics in these geometries. Such trapping is studied in detail for the most symmetrical microstate geometries. It is found that there are several distinct types of trapped null geode…

Recently, several new characteristics have been introduced to describe null geodesic structure of strong gravitational field, such as photon regions, transversely trapping surfaces and some generalizations. They give an alternative and concise way to describe lensing and shadow features of compact objects with strong gravitational field without recurring to complete integration of the geodesic equations. Here we test this construction in the case of the Weyl metrics when geodesic equations are non-separable, and thus can not be integrated analytically, while the above characteristic surfaces a…
We analyze the causal structure of McVittie spacetime for a classical bouncing cosmological model. In particular, we compute the trapping horizons of the metric and integrate the trajectories of radial null geodesics before, during, and after the bounce takes place. In the contracting phase up to the occurrence of the bounce, a dynamical black hole is present. When the universe reaches a certain minimum scale, the trapping horizons disappear and the black hole ceases to exist. After the bounce, the central weak singularity becomes naked. In the expanding phase, for large positive values of the…
Extremely Compact Stars (ECS) contain trapped null geodesics. When such objects enter the evolution period admitting geodetical motion of neutrinos, certain part of neutrinos produced in their interior will be trapped influencing their neutrino luminosity and thermal evolution. We study neutrino trapping in the braneworld ECS, assuming uniform distribution of neutrino emissivity and massless neutrinos. We give the efficiency of the neutrino trapping effects in the framework of the simple model of the internal spacetime with uniform distribution of energy density, and external spacetime describ…
We present an exact solution in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity describing a spacetime with an anisotropic Kasner-type singularity and Lifshitz asymptotics. This configuration can also be supported by a phantom scalar while still satisfying the Null Energy Condition. For certain parameters of this solution, null geodesics can have an infinitely deep effective potential, thus trapping photons in a finite region along the radial direction. Some examples of periodic null geodesics are obtained. A particularly interesting special case of this solution is a regular, soliton-type metric that retain…
We consider the Maxwell equation in the exterior of a very slowly rotating Kerr black hole. For this system, we prove the boundedness of a positive definite energy on each hypersurface of constant $t$. We also prove the convergence of each solution to a stationary Coulomb solution. We separate a general solution into the charged, Coulomb part and the uncharged part. Convergence to the Coulomb solutions follows from the fact that the uncharged part satisfies a Morawetz estimate, i.e. that a spatially localised energy density is integrable in time. For the unchanged part, we study both the full …
In this paper, we prove that the slowly-rotating Kerr-de Sitter family of black holes are linearly stable as a family of solutions to the Einstein vacuum equations with $Λ>0$ in harmonic (wave) gauge. This article is part of a series that provides a novel proof of the full nonlinear stability of the slowly-rotating Kerr-de Sitter family. This paper and its follow-up offer a self-contained alternative approach to nonlinear stability of the Kerr-de Sitter family from the original work of Hintz and Vasy by interpreting quasinormal modes as $H^k$ eigenvalues of an operator on a Hilbert space, and …
We explore the structure of a dipole-type vacuum field of a slowly rotating magnetic star near the horizon of a supermassive black hole, where the structure of field lines becomes highly distorted by effects of strong gravity. Such a situation may occur near a neutron star in the final stages of a plunging trajectory into a galactic center. We solve Maxwell's equations in the Rindler approximation for the rotating conducting source of dipolar magnetic field arbitrarily inclined with respect to the axis of rotation. For the fixed inclination angle we calculate the field including the radiative …
We use the formulation of asymptotically anti-de Sitter boundary conditions given by Ashtekar and Magnon to obtain a coordinate expression for the general asymptotically AdeS metric in a neighbourhood of infinity. From this, we are able to compute the time delay of null curves propagating near infinity. If the gravitational mass is negative, so will be the time delay (relative to null geodesics at infinity) for certain null geodesics in the spacetime. Following closely an argument given by Penrose, Sorkin, and Woolgar, who treated the asymptotically flat case, we are then able to argue that a …
We investigate the minimal conditions that an asymptotically flat general relativistic spacetime must satisfy in order for a Hawking-like Planckian flux of particles to arrive at future null infinity. We demonstrate that there is no requirement that any sort of horizon form anywhere in the spacetime. We find that the irreducible core requirement is encoded in an approximately exponential "peeling" relationship between affine coordinates on past and future null infinity. As long as a suitable adiabaticity condition holds, then a Planck-distributed Hawking-like flux will arrive at future null in…
The quasinormal mode frequencies can be understood from the massless particles trapped at the unstable circular null geodesics and slowly leaking out to infinity. Base on this viewpoint, in this paper, we construct the quantum entropy spectrum of the stationary black holes from the null geodesics using the new physical interpretation of the quasinormal mode frequencies proposed by Maggiore. Following this idea, we calculate the spacing of the entropy spectrum for various types of black holes with or without the charge and spin in any dimension $d$ of the spacetime. The result shows that the sp…
Stability of a photon sphere, or stability of circular null geodesics on the sphere, plays a key role in its applications to astrophysics. For instance, an unstable photon sphere is responsible for determining the size of a black hole shadow, while a stable photon sphere is inferred to cause the instability of spacetime due to the trapping of gravitational waves on the radius. A photon surface is a geometrical structure first introduced by Claudel, Virbhadra and Ellis as the generalization of a photon sphere. The surface does not require any symmetry of spacetime and has its second fundamental…
We discuss the Hawking temperature of near-equilibrium black holes using a semiclassical analysis. We introduce a useful expansion method for slowly evolving spacetime, and evaluate the Bogoliubov coefficients using the saddle point approximation. For a spacetime whose evolution is sufficiently slow, such as a black hole with slowly changing mass, we find that the temperature is determined by the surface gravity of the past horizon. As an example of applications of these results, we study the Hawking temperature of black holes with null shell accretion in asymptotically flat space and the AdS-…
The massive wave equation $\Box_g ψ- α\fracΛ{3} ψ= 0$ is studied on a fixed Kerr-anti de Sitter background $(\mathcal{M},g_{M,a,Λ})$. We first prove that in the Schwarzschild case (a=0), $ψ$ remains uniformly bounded on the black hole exterior provided that $α< {9/4}$, i.e. the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound holds. Our proof is based on vectorfield multipliers and commutators: The usual energy current arising from the timelike Killing vector field $T$ (which fails to be non-negative pointwise) is shown to be non-negative with the help of a Hardy inequality after integration over a spacelike slic…

Recently, several new characteristics have been introduced to describe null geodesic structure of stationary spacetimes, such as photon regions (PR) and transversely trapping surfaces (TTS). The former are three-dimensional domains confining the spherical photon orbits, while the latter are closed two-surface of spherical topology which fill other regions called TTR. It is argued that in generic stationary axisymmetric spacetime it is natural to consider also the non-closed TTSs of the geometry of spherical cups, satisfying the same conditions ("partial" TTS or PTTS), which fill the three-dime…
