The aim of the present article is to evaluate the motion of charged test particles in the vicinity of a near-extremal rotating black hole in the presence of magnetic fields. Euler-Lagrange motion equations and effective potential methods are used to characterize the motion out of the equatorial plane. Such approach is of peculiar significance if it is considered, e.g., accretion processes onto rotating black holes. In general investigations concerning accretion focus mostly on the simplest case of particles moving in the equatorial plane. Here it will be considered that particles initially moving around some particular orbit may be perturbed by a kick along the $θ$ direction, giving rise to other possible orbits. We confirm the possibility that ultra high energy cosmic rays would be produced at the very center of AGNs, for a specific range of magnetic field magnitudes, since it is possible that ultra-high center-of-mass energies can be produced by particles colliding near the horizon of fastly rotating black holes.
In Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory the extremal Reissner-Nordström solution is no longer the single extremal solution with vanishing angular momentum, when the Chern-Simons coupling constant reaches a critical value. Instead a whole sequence of rotating extremal J=0 solutions arises, labeled by the node number of the magnetic U(1) potential. Associated with the same near horizon solution, the mass of these radially excited extremal solutions converges to the mass of the extremal Reissner-Nordström solution. On the other hand, not all near horizon solutions are also realized as global solu…
Rotating black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory possess remarkable features, when the Chern-Simons coupling constant reaches a critical value. Representing single asymptotically flat black holes with horizons of spherical topology, they exhibit non-uniqueness. In particular, there even exist extremal and non-extremal black holes with the same sets of global charges. Both extremal and non-extremal black holes form sequences of radially excited solutions, that can be labeled by the node number of the magnetic gauge potential function. The extremal Reissner-Nordström solution is no l…
Employing higher order perturbation theory, we find a new class of charged rotating black hole solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with general dilaton coupling constant. Starting from the Myers-Perry solutions, we use the electric charge as the perturbative parameter, and focus on extremal black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta in odd dimensions. We perform the perturbations up to 4th order for black holes in 5 dimensions and up to 3rd order in higher odd dimensions. We calculate the physical properties of these black holes and study their dependence on the charge and the d…
We construct the solution for non-extremal charged rotating black holes in seven-dimensional gauged supergravity, in the case with only one rotation parameter and two independent charges. Using the Boyer-Lindquist coordinates, the metric is expressed in a generalized form of the ansatz previously presented in [S.Q. Wu, Phys. Rev. D 83 (2011) 121502(R)], which may be helpful to find the most general non-extremal two-charged rotating black hole with three unequal rotation parameters. The conserved charges for thermodynamics are also computed.
In this work, motivated by the fact that higher-dimensional theories predict the existence of black holes which differ from their four-dimensional counterpart, we analyse the geodesics and black hole shadow cast by a general non-extremal five-dimensional black hole. The system under consideration corresponds to the Chong-Cvetič-Lü-Pope (Phys. Rev.Lett.{\bf 95}, 161301 (2005)), which has the Myers--Perry black hole as a limit.
We study the collision of two particles with equal masses moving in the equatorial plane near horizon of the rotating regular Ayón-Beato-García (ABG) black hole (BH) and calculate the center-of-mass (CM) energy for the colliding particles for both extremal and non-extremal cases. It turns out that CM energy depends not only on rotation parameter $a$ but also on charge $Q$. Particularly for the extremal rotating regular ABG BH, CM energy of two colliding particles could be arbitrarily high for critical angular momentum of particles. Furthermore, we also show that, for a non-extremal BH, there e…
Well-known results demonstrate the uniqueness of extremal isolated horizons (equivalently near-horizon spacetimes) in (3+1)-dimensions. This paper briefly reviews some of these results and then explicitly constructs families of non-asymptotically flat, non-spherically symmetric spacetimes that nevertheless contain spherically symmetric extremal horizons that are isomorphic to those found in Reissner-Nordstrom spacetimes.
We consider generic rotating axially symmetric "dirty" (surrounded by matter) black holes. Near-horizon circular equatorial orbits are examined in two different cases of near-extremal (small surface gravity $κ$) and exactly extremal black holes. This has a number of qualitative distinctions. In the first case, it is shown that such orbits can lie as close to the horizon as one wishes on suitably chosen slices of space-time when $κ\rightarrow 0$. This generalizes observation of T.\ Jacobson Class. Quantum Grav. 28 187001 (2011) made for the Kerr metric. If a black hole is extremal ($κ=0$), circ…
A (charged) rotating black hole may be unstable against a (charged) massive scalar field perturbation due to the existence of superradiance modes. The stability property depends on the parameters of the system. In this paper, the superradiant stable parameter space is studied for the four-dimensional extremal Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes under massive and charged massive scalar perturbation. For the extremal Kerr case, it is found that when the angular frequency and proper mass of the scalar perturbation satisfy the inequality $ω<μ/\sqrt{3}$, the extremal Kerr black hole and scalar perturb…
We consider non-extremal, stationary, axion-dilaton solutions to ungauged symmetric supergravity models, obtained by Harrison transformations of the non-extremal Kerr solution. We define a general algebraic procedure, which can be viewed as an Inonu-Wigner contraction of the Noether charge matrix associated with the effective D=3 sigma-model description of the solution, yielding, through different singular limits, the known BPS and non-BPS extremal black holes (which include the under-rotating non-BPS one). The non-extremal black hole can thus be thought of as "interpolating" among these limit…

In a (2+1)-dimensional spacetime with a negative cosmological constant, the thermodynamics and the entropy of an extremal rotating thin shell, i.e., an extremal rotating ring, are investigated. The outer and inner regions are taken to be the Bañados-Teitelbom-Zanelli (BTZ) spacetime and the vacuum ground state anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime, respectively. By applying the first law of thermodynamics to the extremal shell one shows that its entropy is an arbitrary function of the gravitational area $A_+$ alone, $S=S(A_+)$. When the shell approaches its own gravitational radius $r_+$ and turns in…
We analytically study the linear response of a near-extremal Kerr black hole to external scalar, electromagnetic, and gravitational field perturbations. We show that the energy density, electromagnetic field strength, and tidal force experienced by infalling observers exhibit transient growth near the horizon. The growth lasts arbitrarily long in the extremal limit, reproducing the horizon instability of extremal Kerr. We explain these results in terms of near-horizon geometry and discuss potential astrophysical implications.
We consider 2+1--dimensional analogues of the Bertotti-Robinson (BR) spacetimes in the sense that the coefficient at the angular part is a constant. We show that such BR-like solutions are either pure static or uncharged rotating. We trace the origin of the inconsistency between a charge and rotation, considering the BR-like spacetime as a result of the limiting transition of a non-extremal black hole to the extremal state. We also find that the quasilocal energy and angular momentum of such BR-like spacetimes calculated within the boundary $l=const$ ($l$ is the proper distance) are constants …
We consider collision of two particles 1 and 2 near the horizon of the extremal rotating axially symmetric neutral generic black hole producing particles 3 and 4. We discuss the scenario in which both particles 3 and 4 fall into a black hole and move in a white hole region. If particle 1 is fine-tuned, the energy $E_{c.m.}$ in the centre of mass grows unbounded (the Bañados-Silk-West effect). Then, particle 3 \ can, in principle, reach a flat infinity in another universe. If not only $E_{c.m.}$ but also the corresponding Killing energy $E$ is unbounded, this gives a so-called super-Penrose pro…
We study 5-dimensional black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with free Chern-Simons coupling parameter. We consider an event horizon with spherical topology, and both angular momenta of equal magnitude. In particular, we study extremal black holes, which can be used to obtain the boundary of the domain of existence. Above a critical value of the Chern-Simons coupling constant we find non-static extremal solutions with vanishing angular momentum. These solutions form a sequence which can be labeled by the node number of the magnetic $U(1)$ potential or the inertial dragging. As th…
We consider stationary extremal black hole solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with a negative cosmological constant in four dimensions. We determine all non-static axisymmetric near-horizon geometries (with non-toroidal horizon topology) and all static near-horizon geometries for black holes of this kind. This allows us to deduce that the most general near-horizon geometry of an asymptotically globally AdS(4) rotating extremal black hole, is the near-horizon limit of extremal Kerr-Newman-AdS(4). We also identify the subset of near-horizon geometries which are supersymmetric. Finally, …
If two particles collide near the horizon of a rotating extremal black hole, under certain conditions the energy E_{c.m.} in the center-of-mass frame can grow without limit (the so-called Banados-Silk-West effect). We consider collisions that produce two other particles. We show that for a generic dirty (surrounded by matter) black hole, there exist upper bounds on the energy and mass of product particles which can be detected at infinity. As a result, the positive energy gain is possible but is quite modest. It mainly depends on two numbers in which near-horizon behavior of the metric is enco…
We analyse the superradiant stability of braneworld extremal Kerr and Kerr-Newman black holes under massive scalar perturbation. These black hole solutions differ from their four dimensional counterpart by the presence of a tidal charge, which unlike electric charge, can take both positive and negative values and carries the signature of extra dimensions. We consider the perturbation of the brane geometry by a massive scalar field. From the radial equation of motion of the scalar field, we have found the effective potential felt by the field. For superradiant stability, there should not be any…
We obtain new non-extremal rotating black hole solutions in maximal five-dimensional gauged supergravity. They are characterised by five parameters, associated with the mass, the two angular momenta, and two independently-specifiable charge parameters. Two of the three charges associated with the U(1)^3 Cartan subgroup of the SO(6) gauge group are equal, whilst the third can be independently specified. These new solutions generalise all the previously-known rotating solutions in five-dimensional gauged supergravity with independent angular momenta. They describe regular black holes, provided t…
The Weak Gravity Conjecture arises from the assertion that all extremal black holes, even those which are "classical" in the sense of being very massive, must decay by quantum-mechanical emission of particles or smaller black holes. This is interesting, because some observed astrophysical black holes are on the brink of being extremal -- $\,$ though this is due to rapid rotation rather than a large electric or magnetic charge. The possibility that rotating near-extremal black holes might, in addition to radiating spinning particles, also bifurcate by emitting smaller black holes, has attracted…
We describe the most general asymptotically flat, stationary, non-extremal, dyonic black hole of the four-dimensional N = 2 supergravity coupled to 3 vector multiplets that describes the low-energy regime of the STU model. Under U-dualities, this can be used as a seed to generate all single-centered stationary black holes of N = 8 supergravity. The independent conserved charges are the mass, angular momentum, four electric charges and four magnetic charges; an independent NUT charge can also be added. Several aspects of the black hole are presented, including thermodynamics, the BPS limit, the…
High-energy collisions can occur for radially moving charged test particles in the extremal Reissner-Nordström spacetime if one of the particles is fine-tuned and the collision point is taken close to the horizon. This is an analogy of the Banados-Silk-West (BSW) effect, first described for extremal Kerr black holes. However, it differs significantly in terms of energy extraction: unlike for the original BSW process, no unconditional upper bounds on mass and energy of an escaping test particle produced in the collision were found for the charged version. We show that these results can be repli…
We argue that the possibility of having infinite energy in the centre of mass frame of colliding particles is a generic property of rotating black holes. We suggest a general model-independent derivation valid for "dirty" black holes. The earlier observations for the Kerr or Kerr-Newman metrics are confirmed and generalized.
Logarithmic corrections to the entropy of near-extremal rotating black holes

We compute logarithmic corrections to the entropy of rotating extremal black holes using quantum entropy function i.e. Euclidean quantum gravity approach. Our analysis includes five dimensional supersymmetric BMPV black holes in type IIB string theory on T^5 and K3 x S^1 as well as in the five dimensional CHL models, and also non-supersymmetric extremal Kerr black hole and slowly rotating extremal Kerr-Newmann black holes in four dimensions. For BMPV black holes our results are in perfect agreement with the microscopic results derived from string theory. In particular we reproduce correctly th…
It has recently been pointed out that arbitrary center-of-mass energies may be obtained for particle collisions near the horizon of an extremal Kerr black hole. We investigate this mechanism in cylindrical topology. In particular we consider the center-of-mass energies of a cylindrical black hole with an extremal rotation and charge parameter. The geodesics are first derived with a rotating charged cylindrical black hole producing the background gravitational field. Finally the center-of-mass is determined for this background and its extremal limit is taken.
Employing higher order perturbation theory, we obtain charged rotating black holes in odd dimensions, where the Einstein-Maxwell Lagrangian may be supplemented with a Chern-Simons term. Starting from the Myers-Perry solutions, we use the electric charge as the perturbative parameter, and focus on extremal black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta. For Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with arbitrary Chern-Simons coupling constant, we perform the perturbations up to third order for any odd dimension. We discuss the physical properties of these black holes and study their dependence on…
The collisional Penrose process received much attention when Banados, Silk and West (BSW) pointed out the possibility of test-particle collisions with arbitrarily high center-of-mass energy in the vicinity of the horizon of an extremally rotating black hole. However, the energy that can be extracted from the black hole in this promising, if simplified, scenario, called the BSW effect, turned out to be subject to unconditional upper bounds. And although such bounds were not found for the electrostatic variant of the process, this version is also astrophysically unfeasible, since it requires a m…
The extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole admits a conformal inversion symmetry, in which the metric is mapped into itself under an inversion of the radial coordinate combined with a conformal rescaling. In the rotating generalisation, Couch and Torrence showed that the Kerr-Newman metric no longer exhibits a conformal inversion symmetry, but the radial equation arising in the separation of the massless Klein-Gordon equation admits a mode-dependent inversion symmetry, where the radius of inversion depends upon the energy and azimuthal angular momentum of the mode. It was more recently shown t…
We study the effect of ultra-high energy particles collisions near the black hole horizon (BSW effect) for two scenarios: when one of particle either (i) moves on a circular orbit or (ii) plunges from it towards the horizon. It is shown that such circular near-horizon orbits can exist for near-extremal black holes only. This includes the innermost stable orbit (ISCO), marginally bound orbit (MBO) and photon one (PhO). We consider generic "dirty" rotating black holes not specifying the metric and show that the energy in the centre of mass frame has the universal scaling dependence on the surfac…
The mild form of the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) requires higher derivative corrections to extremal charged black holes to increase their charge-to-mass ratio. This allows decay via emission of a smaller extremal black hole. In this paper, we investigate if similar constraints hold for extremal rotating black holes. We do so by considering the leading higher derivative corrections to the four-dimensional Kerr black hole and five-dimensional Myers-Perry black hole. We use a known mapping of these rotating solutions to a four-dimensional non-rotating dyonic Kaluza-Klein black hole and impose t…
We obtain new solutions of Einsteinian cubic gravity coupled to a Maxwell field that describe the near-horizon geometry of charged and rotating black holes. We show that the AdS$_2\times\mathbb{S}^2$ near-horizon geometry of Reissner-Nordström black holes receives no corrections, but deviations with respect to the extremal Kerr-Newman solution appear as we turn on the angular momentum. We construct the profile of these corrected geometries using both numerical methods and slowly-spinning expansions, but we also find additional solutions that do not reduce to AdS$_2\times\mathbb{S}^2$ geometrie…
We investigate rotating Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMd) black holes in odd dimensions. Focusing on black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta, we determine the domain of existence of these black holes. Non-extremal black holes reside with the boundaries determined by the static and the extremal rotating black holes. The extremal EMd black holes show proportionality of their horizon area and their angular momenta. Thus the charge does not enter. We also address the Einstein-Maxwell case, where the extremal rotating black holes exhibit two branches. On the branch emerging from the Myers-Per…
It has recently been shown by Yang. et. al. [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 87}, 041502(R) (2013)] that rotating Kerr black holes are characterized by two distinct sets of quasinormal resonances. These two families of quasinormal resonances display qualitatively different asymptotic behaviors in the extremal ($a/M\to 1$) black-hole limit: The zero-damping modes (ZDMs) are characterized by relaxation times which tend to infinity in the extremal black-hole limit ($\Imω\to 0$ as $a/M\to 1$), whereas the damped modes (DMs) are characterized by non-zero damping rates ($\Imω\to$ finite-values as $a/M\to 1$). In …

Recently, Banãdos, Silk and West (BSW) demonstrated that the extremal Kerr black hole can act as a particle accelerator with arbitrarily high center-of-mass energy ($E_{CM}$) when the collision takes place near the horizon. The rotating Hayward's regular black hole, apart from Mass ($M$) and angular momentum ($a$), has a new parameter $g$ ($g>0$ is a constant) that provides a deviation from the Kerr black hole. We demonstrate that for each $g$, with $M=1$, there exist critical $a_{E}$ and $r_{H}^{E}$, which corresponds to a regular extremal black hole with degenerate horizon, and $a_{E}$ decre…
The low-temperature thermodynamics of near-extremal rotating black holes has recently been revisited to incorporate one-loop contributions that are dominant in this regime. We discuss these quantum corrections to the gravitational path integral for asymptotically Anti de-Sitter black holes in four and five dimensions. In four dimensions we explicitly consider Kerr-AdS$_4$, Kerr-Newman-AdS$_4$ and the rotating black hole in ${\cal N}=4$ gauged supergravity with two scalars and two electric charges turned on. In five dimensions we explicitly address the asymptotically flat Myers-Perry black hole…
Recently, Durkee and Reall have conjectured a criterion for linear instability of rotating, extremal, asymptotically Minkowskian black holes in $d\ge 4$ dimensions, such as the Myers-Perry black holes. They considered a certain elliptic operator, $\cA$, acting on symmetric trace-free tensors intrinsic to the horizon. Based in part on numerical evidence, they suggested that if the lowest eigenvalue of this operator is less than the critical value $-1/4$ ( called "effective BF-bound"), then the black hole is linearly unstable. In this paper, we prove an extended version of their conjecture. Our …
We construct the NHEG phase space, the classical phase space of Near-Horizon Extremal Geometries with fixed angular momenta and entropy, and with the largest symmetry algebra. We focus on vacuum solutions to $d$ dimensional Einstein gravity. Each element in the phase space is a geometry with $SL(2,\mathbb R)\times U(1)^{d-3}$ isometries which has vanishing $SL(2,\mathbb R)$ and constant $U(1)$ charges. We construct an on-shell vanishing symplectic structure, which leads to an infinite set of symplectic symmetries. In four spacetime dimensions, the phase space is unique and the symmetry algebra…
We present the general exact solutions for non-extremal rotating charged black holes in the Godel universe of five-dimensional minimal supergravity theory. They are uniquely characterized by four non-trivial parameters, namely the mass $m$, the charge $q$, the Kerr equal rotation parameter $a$, and the Godel parameter $j$. We calculate the conserved energy, angular momenta and charge for the solutions and show that they completely satisfy the first law of black hole thermodynamics. We also study the symmetry and separability of the Hamilton-Jacobi and the massive Klein-Gordon equations in thes…
Using a thin shell, the first law of thermodynamics, and a unified approach, we study the thermodymanics and find the entropy of a (2+1)-dimensional extremal rotating Bañados-Teitelbom-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole. The shell in (2+1) dimensions, i.e., a ring, is taken to be circularly symmetric and rotating, with the inner region being a ground state of the anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime and the outer region being the rotating BTZ spacetime. The extremal BTZ rotating black hole can be obtained in three different ways depending on the way the shell approaches its own gravitational or horizon radius…
As a charged spinning fermion drops into a charged rotating BTZ black hole, we investigate the laws of thermodynamics and weak cosmic censorship conjecture with and without pressure respectively. For the case without pressure, the first law, second law, as well as the weak cosmic censorship are found to be valid. While for the case with pressure, though the first law is still valid, the second law and the weak cosmic censorship conjecture are found to be violable, depending on the charge, angular momentum, AdS radius, and their variations. In addition, in both cases, the configurations of the …
We investigate the Kerr-Newman-NUT black hole solution obtained from Plebański-Demiański solutions with several assumptions. The origin of the microscopic entropy of this black hole is investigated using the conjectured Kerr/CFT correspondence which is originally proposed for extremal Kerr black holes. The isometry of the near-horizon extremal Kerr-Newman-NUT black hole shows that the asymptotic symmetry group may be implemented to compute the central charge of the Virasoro algebra. Furthermore, by assuming Frolov-Thorne vacuum, the conformal temperatures can be obtained. Then by using the Car…
We investigate the wave dynamics of a charged massive scalar field propagating in a maximally rotating (extremal) linear dilaton black hole geometry. We prove the existence of a discrete and infinite family of resonances describing non-decaying stationary scalar configurations (clouds) enclosing these rapidly rotating black holes. The results obtained signal the potential stationary scalar field distributions (dark matter) around the extremal linear dilaton black holes. In particular, we analytically compute the effective heights of those clouds above the center of the black hole.
In this paper we consider rotating modified Hayward and rotating modified Bardeen black holes as particle accelerators. We investigate the center of mass energy of two colliding neutral particles with same rest masses falling from rest at infinity to near the horizons of the mentioned black holes. We investigate the range of the particle's angular momentum and the orbit of the particle. We also investigate the center of mass energy for extremal black hole.

The destruction of the event horizon of a nonsingular black hole, which is not prevented by the weak cosmic censorship conjecture, might provide us the possibility to access quantum regime of gravity inside black hole. We investigate the possibility of overspinning a nonsingular rotating quantum-corrected black hole by a test particle and a scalar field in this paper, and analyse the effect of the quantum parameter on the destruction of the event horizon. For the test particle injection, both extremal and near-extremal black holes cannot be overspun due to the existence of the quantum paramete…
The gravitational Poynting vector provides a mechanism for the transfer of gravitational energy to a system of falling objects. In the following we will show that the gravitational poynting vector together with the gravitational Larmor theorem also provides a mechanism to explain how massive bodies acquire rotational kinetic energy when external mechanical forces are applied on them.
We derive the rotating black hole metric by appealing to ellipsoidal symmetry of space and a general guiding principle of incorporation of the Newtonian acceleration for massive and no acceleration for massless particles.
We consider the near-horizon geometries of extremal, rotating black hole solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations, including a negative cosmological constant, in four and five dimensions. We assume the existence of one rotational symmetry in 4d, two commuting rotational symmetries in 5d and in both cases non-toroidal horizon topology. In 4d we determine the most general near-horizon geometry of such a black hole, and prove it is the same as the near-horizon limit of the extremal Kerr-AdS(4) black hole. In 5d, without a cosmological constant, we determine all possible near-horizon geometries …
We discuss spherically symmetric exact solutions of the Einstein equations for quintessential matter surrounding a black hole, which has an additional parameter ($ω$) due to the quintessential matter, apart from the mass ($M$). In turn, we employ the Newman\(-\)Janis complex transformation to this spherical quintessence black hole solution and present a rotating counterpart that is identified, for $α=-e^2 \neq 0$ and $ω=1/3$, exactly as the Kerr\(-\)Newman black hole, and as the Kerr black hole when $α=0$. Interestingly, for a given value of parameter $ω$, there exists a critical rotation para…
In the loop approach to quantum gravity the spectra of operators corresponding to such geometrical quantities as length, area and volume become quantized. However, the size of arising quanta of geometry in Planck units is not fixed by the theory itself: a free parameter, sometimes referred to as Immirzi parameter, is known to affect the spectrum of all geometrical operators. In this paper I propose an argument that fixes the value of this parameter. I consider rotating black holes, in particular the extremal ones. For such black holes the ``no naked singularity condition'' bounds the total ang…
