Employing higher order perturbation theory, we find a new class of charged rotating black hole solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with general dilaton coupling constant. Starting from the Myers-Perry solutions, we use the electric charge as the perturbative parameter, and focus on extremal black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta in odd dimensions. We perform the perturbations up to 4th order for black holes in 5 dimensions and up to 3rd order in higher odd dimensions. We calculate the physical properties of these black holes and study their dependence on the charge and the dilaton coupling constant.
The purpose of this article is to obtain the periastron precession of a free particle moving around an extremal spherically symmetric dilaton black hole. To get the formulae for the periastron precession we use the phase-plane analysis of the general relativistic equations of motion.
A class of perturbative charged rotating dilaton black hole solutions coupled to the nonlinear Born-Infeld electrodynamics is presented. The strategy for obtaining these solutions is to start from Myers-Perry solutions, and then considering the effects of the dilaton field, Born-Infeld parameter as well as the electric charge as a perturbative parameter. We perform the perturbations up to 4th order in the extremal black holes of Einstein-Born-Infeld-dilaton gravity with equal angular momentum and arbitrary dilaton coupling constant. We discuss the physical properties of these black holes and s…
It has been argued that the extremal dilaton black holes exhibit a flux expulsion of Abelian-Higgs vortices. We re-examine carefully the problem and give analytic proofs for the flux expulsion always takes place. We also conduct numerical analysis of the problem using three initial data sets on the horizon of an extreme dilatonic black hole, namely, core, vacuum and sinusoidal initial conditions. We also show that an Abelian-Higgs vortex can end on the extremal dilaton black hole. Concluding, we calculate the backreaction of the Abelian-Higgs vortex on the geometry of the extremal black hole a…
Motivated by the recently proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence, we investigate the holographic dual of the extremal and non-extremal rotating linear dilaton black hole in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion Gravity. For the case of extremal black hole, by imposing the appropriate boundary condition at spatial infinity of the near horizon extremal geometry, the Virasoro algebra of conserved charges associated with the asymptotic symmetry group is obtained. It is shown that the microscopic entropy of the dual conformal field given by Cardy formula exactly agrees with Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of extrema…
We test whether static charged dilaton black holes in 2+1 dimensions can be turned into naked singularities, by sending in test particles from infinity. We derive that overcharging is possible and generic for both extremal and nearly extremal black holes. Our analysis also imply that nearly extremal charged dilaton black holes can be continuously driven to extremality and beyond, unlike nearly extremal Baunados-Teitelboim-Zanelli, Kerr and Reissner-Nordström black holes which are overspun or overcharged by a discrete jump. Thus the weak form of the cosmic censorship conjecture and the third la…
We investigate the wave dynamics of a charged massive scalar field propagating in a maximally rotating (extremal) linear dilaton black hole geometry. We prove the existence of a discrete and infinite family of resonances describing non-decaying stationary scalar configurations (clouds) enclosing these rapidly rotating black holes. The results obtained signal the potential stationary scalar field distributions (dark matter) around the extremal linear dilaton black holes. In particular, we analytically compute the effective heights of those clouds above the center of the black hole.
We investigate the phenomenon of "faster than light" photons in a family of dilaton black hole spacetimes. For radially directed photons, we find that their light-cone condition is modified even though the spacetimes are spherically symmetric. They also satisfy the "horizon theorem" and the "polarization sum rule" of Shore. For orbital photons, the dilatonic effect on the modification of the light-cone condition can become more dominant than the electromagnetic and the gravitational ones as the orbit gets closer to the event horizon in the extremal or near-extremal cases.
Explicit dyonic dilaton black holes of the four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory are known only for two particular values of the dilaton coupling constant $a =1,\sqrt{3}$, while for other $a$ numerical evidence was presented earlier about existence of extremal dyons in theories with the discrete sequence of dilaton couplings $a=\sqrt{n(n+1)/2}$ with integer $n$. Apart from the lower members $n=1,\,2$, this family of theories does not have motivation from supersymmetry or higher dimensions, and so far the above quantization rule has not been derived analytically. We fill this gap sho…
We study the properties of the Green's functions of the fermions in the extremal charged dilatonic black hole proposed by Gubser and Rocha [Phys. Rev. D \textbf{81}, 046001 (2010)]. We find that many properties seem to be in agreement with that of Fermi liquid. Especially, the dispersion relation is linear. It is very different from that found in the extremal Reissner-Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m (RN) black hole for massless fermion, which is obviously non-Fermi liquid due to a nonlinear dispersion relation. However, for another scaling behavior of the height of $ImG_{11}$ at the maximum, the scaling ex…
We discuss the relationship between two-dimensional (2D) dilaton gravity models and sine-Gordon-like field theories. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the solutions of 2D dilaton gravity and the solutions of a (two fields) generalization of the sine-Gordon model. In particular, we find a connection between the soliton solutions of the generalized sine-Gordon model and extremal black hole solutions of 2D dilaton gravity. As a by-product of our calculations we find a easy way to generate cosmological solutions of 2D dilaton gravity.
We discuss both classical and semiclassical properties of extremal black holes in theories where the dilaton and a modulus field are present. We find that the corresponding 2-dim geometry is asymptotically anti-de Sitter rather then asymptotically flat as in the purely dilatonic case. This fact has many important consequences, which we analyze at length, both for the classical behaviour and for the thermodynamical properties of the black hole. We also study the Hawking evaporation process in the semiclassical approximation. The calculations strongly indicates the emergence of a stable ground s…
A $2p + 5$ parametric family of black holes is constructed in dilaton--axion gravity with $p$ vector fields using a holomorphic representation of U--duality in three dimensions. The metric of the non--extremal black holes has a Reissner--Nordström type structure and generically possesses an internal horizon. However in the extremal limit the generic solution exhibits a dilatonic type null singularity. Only in the case of the orthogonal electric and magnetic charges (if $p>1$) the extremal solution may have a non--singular event horizon.
Here we consider static, axially symmetric, rotating and charged Kerr-Sen Dilaton-Axion black hole metric in generalized Boyer-Lindquist coordinates as particle accelerators. We obtain the geodesic motions of particle. We find the effective potential and discuss the circular orbit of a particle. We investigate the center of mass energy of two colliding neutral particles with different rest masses falling from rest at infinity to near the non-extremal horizons (event horizon and Cauchy horizon) and extremal horizon of the Kerr-Sen black hole. Analogous to the Compton process, we discuss the col…
Previously known exactly solvable models of 2D semiclassical dilaton gravity admit, in the general case, only non-extreme black holes. It is shown that there exist exceptional degenerate cases, that can be obtained by some limiting transitions from the general exact solution, which include, in particular, extremal and ultraextremal black holes. We also analyze properties of extreme black holes without demanding exact solvability and show that for such solutions quantum backreaction forbids the existence of ultraextreme black holes. The conditions, under which divergencies of quantum stresses in…
We investigate charged black holes coupled to a massive dilaton. It is shown that black holes which are large compared to the Compton wavelength of the dilaton resemble the Reissner-Nordström solution, while those which are smaller than this scale resemble the massless dilaton solutions. Black holes of order the Compton wavelength of the dilaton can have wormholes outside the event horizon in the string metric. Unlike all previous black hole solutions, nearly extremal and extremal black holes (of any size) repel each other. We argue that extremal black holes are quantum mechanically unstable t…
We study flows of non-supersymmetric attractor black holes in the context of gauge/gravity correspondence. As our bulk theory, we consider the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton system with a single dilaton field coupled to two Maxwell fields and make a relevant deformation by adding a bare potential to the dilaton field. We find two types of extremal black hole solutions with attractor mechanism: The one smooth at the horizon and the other non-smooth. We show from both bulk and boundary theory perspective that the former is thermodynamically unstable, while the latter is stable.
We show that four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Gauss-Bonnet gravity admits asymptotically flat black hole solutions with a degenerate event horizon of the Reissner-Nordström type $AdS_2\times S^2$. Such black holes exist for the dilaton coupling constant within the interval $0\leq a^2<a^2_{\rm cr}$. Black holes must be endowed with an electric charge and (possibly) with magnetic charge (dyons) but they can not be purely magnetic. Purely electric solutions are constructed numerically and the critical dilaton coupling is determined $a_{\rm cr}\simeq 0.488219703$. For each value of the di…
We introduce a new attractor mechanism to find the entropy for spherically symmetric extremal black holes. The key ingredient is to find a two-dimensional (2D) dilaton gravity with the dilaton potential $V(ϕ)$. The condition of an attractor is given by $\nabla^2ϕ=V(ϕ_0)$ and $\bar{R}_2=-V^{\prime}(ϕ_0)$ and for a constant dilaton $ ϕ=ϕ_0$, these are also used to find the location of the degenerate horizon $r=r_{e}$ of an extremal black hole. As a nontrivial example, we consider an extremal regular black hole obtained from the coupled system of Einstein gravity and nonlinear electrodynamics. Th…
In this paper the static, spherically symmetric and electrically charged black hole solutions in Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity with massive dilaton are investigated numerically. The Continuous Analog of Newton Method (CANM) is used to solve the corresponding nonlinear multipoint boundary value problems (BVPs). The linearized BVPs are solved numerically by means of collocation scheme of fourth order. A special class of solutions are the extremal ones. We show that the extremal horizons within the framework of the model satisfy some nonlinear system of algebraic equations. Depending on the charge…
Employing higher order perturbation theory, we find a new class of perturbative extremal rotating black hole solutions with Born-Infeld electric charge in odd D-dimensional spacetime. The seed solution is an odd dimensional extremal Myers-Perry black hole with equal angular momenta to which a perturbative nonlinear electric Born-Infeld field charge q is added maintaining the extremality condition. The perturbations are performed up to third order. We also study some physical properties of these black holes. In particular, it is shown that the values of the gyromagnetic ratio of the black holes…
We consider charged black holes within dilaton gravity with exponential-linear dependence of action coefficients on dilaton and minimal coupling to quantum scalar fields. This includes, in particular, CGHS and RST black holes in the uncharged limit. For non-extremal configuration quantum correction to the total mass, Hawking temperature, electric potential and metric are found explicitly and shown to obey the first generalized law. We also demonstrate that quantum-corrected extremal black holes in these theories do exist and correspond to the classically forbidden region of parameters in the s…
In this paper we study the timelike geodesics around a spherically symmetric charged dilaton black hole. The trajectories around the black hole are classified using the effective potential of a free test particle. This qualitative approach enables us to determine the type of the orbit described by the test particle without solving the equations of motion, if the parameters of the black hole and the particle are known. The connections between these parameters and the type of orbit described by the particle are obtained. To visualize the orbits we solve numerically the equation of motions for di…
We present a new solution in 5D Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity describing an equilibrium configuration of extremal rotating black holes with lens space horizon topologies. The basic properties of the solution are investigated and the basic physical quantities are calculated. It is shown that the black hole horizons are superconducting in the sense that they expel the magnetic flux lines.
We find broad classes of exact 4-dimensional asymptotically flat black hole solutions in Einstein-Maxwell theories with a non-minimally coupled dilaton and its non-trivial potential. We consider a few interesting limits, in particular, a regular generalization of the dilatonic Reissner-Nordstr{ö}m solution and, also, smooth deformations of supersymmetric black holes. Further examples are provided for more general dilaton potentials. We discuss the thermodynamical properties and show that the first law is satisfied. In the non-extremal case the entropy depends, as expected, on the asymptotic va…
We investigate rotating Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMd) black holes in odd dimensions. Focusing on black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta, we determine the domain of existence of these black holes. Non-extremal black holes reside with the boundaries determined by the static and the extremal rotating black holes. The extremal EMd black holes show proportionality of their horizon area and their angular momenta. Thus the charge does not enter. We also address the Einstein-Maxwell case, where the extremal rotating black holes exhibit two branches. On the branch emerging from the Myers-Per…
It has recently been pointed out that, under certain conditions, the energy of particles accelerated by black holes in the center-of-mass frame can become arbitrarily high. In this paper, we study the collision of two particles in the case of four-dimensional charged nonrotating, extremal charged rotating and near-extremal charged rotating Kaluza-Klein black holes as well as the naked singularity case in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory. We find that the center-of-mass energy for a pair of colliding particles is unlimited at the horizon of charged nonrotating Kaluza-Klein black holes, extremal …
We present a systematic discussion of supersymmetric solutions of 2D dilaton supergravity. In particular those solutions which retain at least half of the supersymmetries are ground states with respect to the bosonic Casimir function (essentially the ADM mass). Nevertheless, by tuning the prepotential appropriately, black hole solutions may emerge with an arbitrary number of Killing horizons. The absence of dilatino and gravitino hair is proven. Moreover, the impossibility of supersymmetric dS ground states and of nonextremal black holes is confirmed, even in the presence of a dilaton. In thes…
In this paper, we investigate the influence of the angular momentum of a charged particle around non-extremal and extremal Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton-Axion black holes on the Lyapunov exponent. The angular momentum's ranges and spatial regions where the bound of the exponent is violated are found for certain values of the rotation parameter and dilatonic constant of the black holes. This violation always exists when the rotation parameter is large enough and the rotation directions of the particle is opposite to those of the black holes. The spatial regions outside the extermal black hole for th…
We construct explicitly all extremal instanton solutions to $\mathcal{N}=4,\, D=4$ supergravity truncated to one vector field (Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-axion (EMDA) theory). These correspond to null geodesics of the target space of the sigma-model $G/H=Sp(4,\mathbb{R})/GL(2,\mathbb{R})$ obtained by compactification of four-dimensional Euclidean EMDA on a circle. They satisfy a no-force condition in terms of the asymptotic charges and part of them (corresponding to nilpotent orbits of the $Sp(4,\mathbb{R})$ U-duality) are presumably supersymmetric. The space of finite action solutions is found …
Dilaton-axion gravity with $p U(1)$ vector fields is studied on space-times admitting a timelike Killing vector field. Three-dimensional sigma-model is derived in terms of Kähler geometry, and holomorphic representation of the SO(2,2+p) global symmetry is constructed. A general static black hole solution depending on $2p+5$ parameters is obtained via SO(2,2+p) covariantization of the Schwarzschild solution. The metric in the curvature coordinates looks as the variable mass Reissner-Nordström one and generically possesses two horizons. The inner horizon is pushed to the singularity if electric …
In this paper, we investigate the validity of the weak cosmic censorship conjecture(WCCC) for a rotating linear dilaton black hole from two different methods. By using the classsical ingoing test particle method, we obtain the same results as given in the new version of gedanken experiment recently proposed by Wald. We find that even for this rotating linear dilaton black hole the Iyer-Wald formalism is still functioning. By comparing these two methods, we find that the same result will be obtained in both cases up to first order. The nearly extremal black hole can be overspun, while the extre…
If string theory describes nature, then charged black holes are not described by the Reissner-Nordstrom solution. This solution must be modified to include a massive dilaton. In the limit of vanishing dilaton mass, the new solution can be found by a generalization of the Harrison transformation for the Einstein-Maxwell equations. These two solution generating transformations and the resulting black holes are compared. It is shown that the extremal black hole with massless dilaton can be viewed as the ``square root" of the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom solution. When the dilaton mass is included,…
We discuss how various properties of dilaton black holes depend on the dilaton coupling constant $a$. In particular we investigate the $a$-dependence of certain mass parameters both outside and in the extremal limit and discuss their relation to thermodynamical quantities. To further illuminate the role of the coupling constant $a$ we look at a massless point particle in a dilaton black hole geometry as well as the scattering of (neutral) fermions. In this latter case we find that the scattering potential vanishes for the zero angular momentum mode which seems to indicate a catastrophic deradi…
The thermodynamics of Maxwell-Dilaton (dirty) black holes has been extensively studied. It has served as a fertile ground to test ideas about temperature through various definitions of surface gravity. In this paper, we make an independent analysis of this black hole solution in both, Einstein and Jordan, frames. We explore a set of definitions for the surface gravity and observe the different predictions they make for the near extremal configuration of this black hole. Finally, motivated by the singularity structure in the interior of the event horizon, we use a holographic argument to remove…
In the present paper we investigate the Hawking radiation of asymptotically non-flat dyonic black holes in 4D Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity in semi-classical approximation. We show that the problem allows an exact analytical treatment and we compute exactly the semi-classical radiation spectrum of both non-extremal and extremal black holes under consideration. In the high frequency regime we find that the Hawking temperature does not agree with the surface gravity when the magnetic charge is nonzero. Even more surprisingly the Hawking temperature is independent of the black hole intrinsic c…
The black hole of the widely used ordinary 2d--dilaton model (DBH) deviates from the Schwarzschild black hole (SBH) of General Relativity in one important feature: Whereas non-null extremals or geodesics show the expected incompleteness this turns out {\it not to be the case for the null extremals}. After a simple analysis in Kruskal coordinates for singularities with power behavior of this -- apparently till now overlooked -- property we discuss the global structure of a large family of generalized dilaton theories which does not only contain the DBH and SBH but also other proposed dilaton th…
We numerically construct static and spherically symmetric electrically charged black hole solutions in Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity with massive dilaton. The numerical solutions show that the dilaton potential allows many more black hole causal structures than the massless dilaton. We find that depending on the black hole mass and charge and the dilaton mass the black holes can have either one, two, or three horizons. The extremal solutions are also found out. As an interesting peculiarity we note that there are extremal black holes with an inner horizon and with triply degenerated horizon.
We calculate the expectation value of the stress energy tensor for a massless dilaton-coupled 2D scalar field propagating on an extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole formed by the collapse of a timelike shell, showing its regularity on the horizon.
Dirac cloud is in absence in general relativity since the superradiance mechanism fails to work for Dirac fields. For the first time we find a novel mechanism to support Dirac clouds, which is independent on superradiance mechanism. We study quasi bound states of Dirac particles around a charged spherical black hole in dilatonic gravity. We find that the quasi bound states become real bound states when the central black hole becomes extremal. We make an intensive study of the energy spectrum of the stationary clouds for different fine structure constant $μM$, and reveal the existence condition…
We study charged dilaton black branes in $AdS_4$. Our system involves a dilaton $ϕ$ coupled to a Maxwell field $F_{μν}$ with dilaton-dependent gauge coupling, ${1\over g^2} = f^2(ϕ)$. First, we find the solutions for extremal and near extremal branes through a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. The near horizon geometries in the simplest cases, where $f(ϕ) = e^{αϕ}$, are Lifshitz-like, with a dynamical exponent $z$ determined by $α$. The black hole thermodynamics varies in an interesting way with $α$, but in all cases the entropy is vanishing and the specific heat is positive …
We prove the uniqueness theorem for stationary axisymmetric black hole solution in Einstein-Maxwell-axion-dilaton gravity being the low-energy limit of the heterotic string theory. We consider both non-degenerate and extremal Kerr-Sen black hole solutions.
In this note it is shown that near-extremal four dimensional dyonic black holes, where the dilaton is not constant, can be described by a microscopic model consisting of a one-dimensional gas of massless particles.
The uniqueness of static asymptotically flat photon sphere for static black hole solution in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with arbitrary coupling constant was proposed. Using the conformal positive energy theorem we show that the dilaton sphere subject to the non-extremality condition authorizes a cylinder over a topological sphere.
We investigate extremal electrically charged black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with a cosmological constant inspired by string theory. These solutions are not static, and a timelike singularity eventually appears which is not surrounded by an event horizon. This suggests that cosmic censorship may be violated in this theory.
The most general two-dimensional dilaton gravity theory coupled to an Abelian gauge field is considered. It is shown that, up to spacetime diffeomorphisms and $U(1)$ gauge transformations, the field equations admit a two-parameter family of distinct, static solutions. For theories with black hole solutions, coordinate invariant expressions are found for the energy, charge, surface gravity, Hawking temperature and entropy of the black holes. The Hawking temperature is proportional to the surface gravity as expected, and both vanish in the case of extremal black holes in the generic theory. A Ha…
We study the six-dimensional dilaton gravity Yang black holes of hep-th/0607193, which carry (1,-1) charge in SU(2)xSU(2) gauge group. We find what values of the asymptotic parameters (mass and scalar charge) lead to a regular horizon, and show that there are no regular solutions with an extremal horizon.
We study electromagnetically charged dilatonic black brane solutions in arbitrary dimensions with flat transverse spaces, that are asymptotically AdS. This class of solutions includes spacetimes which possess a bulk region where the metric is approximately invariant under Lifshitz scalings. Given fixed asymptotic boundary conditions, we analyze how the behavior of the bulk up to the horizon varies with the charges and derive the extremality conditions for these spacetimes.
It has been recently found that for the near extremal Kerr black holes appearing of Zero Damped Modes (accompanied by qusinormal mode branching) signifies about inapplicability of the regime of small perturbations and the onset of turbulence. Here we show that this phenomena is not limited by Kerr or Kerr-Newman solutions only, but also takes place for rotating dilatonic black holes for which we have found Zero Damped Modes both numerically and analytically. We have also shown that, contrary to recent claims, there is no instability of a charged massive scalar field in the background of the ro…
We study Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton gravity models in four-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime which admit the Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) black hole solution. We show that below a critical temperature the AdS-RN solution becomes unstable against scalar perturbations and the gravitational system undergoes a phase transition. We show using numerical calculations that the new phase is a charged dilatonic black hole. Using the AdS/CFT correspondence we discuss the phase transition in the dual field theory both for non-vanishing temperatures and in the extremal limit. The extremal solution has a …
The entropy for two-dimensional black holes is obtained through the entropy function with the condition that the geometry approaches an $AdS_2$ spacetime in the near horizon limit. It is shown that the entropy is universal and proportional to the value of the dilaton field at the event horizon as expected. We find this universal behavior holds even after the inclusion of higher derivative terms, only modifying the proportional constant. More specifically, a variety of models of the dilaton gravity in two dimensions are considered, in which it is shown that the universal entropy coincides with …
All thermodynamic quantities of the Reissner-Nordström (RN) black hole can be obtained from the dilaton and its potential of two dimensional (2D) dilaton gravity. The dual relations of four thermodynamic laws are also established. Furthermore, the near-horizon thermodynamics of the extremal RN black hole is completely described by the Jackiw-Teitelboim theory which is obtained by perturbing around the AdS$_2$-horizon.
We propose a family of dilaton gravity models possessing bouncing solutions with interiors connecting separate asymptotically flat regions. We demonstrate that inner Cauchy horizons are stable given certain initial conditions. We study causal structure and evaluate thermodynamic properties of black bounces using Euclidean methods. Extremal bounces have zero temperature and can be considered as remnants. We speculate that quantum fluctuations can dissolve event horizons in case of black bounces providing a possible resolution to the information paradox.
We calculate the expectation values of the stress-energy tensor for both a massless minimally-coupled and dilaton-coupled 2D field propagating on an extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, showing its regularity on the horizon in contrast with previous claims in the literature.
Classical solutions describing charged dilaton black holes accelerating in a background magnetic field have recently been found. They include the Ernst metric of the Einstein-Maxwell theory as a special case. We study the extremal limit of these solutions in detail, both at the classical and quantum levels. It is shown that near the event horizon, the extremal solutions reduce precisely to the static extremal black hole solutions. For a particular value of the dilaton coupling, these extremal black holes are five dimensional Kaluza-Klein monopoles. The euclidean sections of these solutions can…
Employing higher order perturbation theory, we obtain charged rotating black holes in odd dimensions, where the Einstein-Maxwell Lagrangian may be supplemented with a Chern-Simons term. Starting from the Myers-Perry solutions, we use the electric charge as the perturbative parameter, and focus on extremal black holes with equal-magnitude angular momenta. For Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with arbitrary Chern-Simons coupling constant, we perform the perturbations up to third order for any odd dimension. We discuss the physical properties of these black holes and study their dependence on…
