We present a comprehensive review of the discrete Boussinesq equations based on their three-component forms on an elementary quadrilateral. These equations were originally found by Nijhoff et al using the direct linearization method and later generalized by Hietarinta using a search method based on multidimensional consistency. We derive from these three-component equations their two- and one-component variants. From the one-component form we derive two different semi-continuous limits as well as their fully continuous limits, which turn out to be PDE's for the regular, modified and Schwarzian Boussinesq equations. Several kinds of Lax pairs are also provided. Finally we give their Hirota bilinear forms and multi-soliton solutions in terms of Casoratians.
We study Darboux transformations for a Boussinesq-type equations. The parasupersymmetric structure of link between Boussinesq and modified Boussinesq systems is revealed.
An alternate form of discrete potential Boussinesq equation is proposed and its multisoliton solutions are constructed. An ultradiscrete potential Boussinesq equation is also obtained from the discrete potential Boussinesq equation using the ultradiscretization technique. The detail of the multisoliton solutions is discussed by using the reduction technique. The lattice potential Boussinesq equation derived by Nijhoff et al. is also investigated by using the singularity confinement test. The relation between the proposed alternate discrete potential Boussinesq equation and the lattice potentia…
Studied is the Baxter equation for the quantum discrete Boussinesq equation. We explicitly construct the Baxter $\mathcal{Q}$ operator from a generating function of the local integrals of motion of the affine Toda lattice field theory, and show that it solves the third order operator-valued difference equation.
A direct method for calculation of Miura type transformations via LA pair is used for the Boussinesq equation. Quadratic Miura type transformations connected with local weakly-nonlocal (Maltsev-Novikov) Hamiltonian structures. Modified systems are presented.
We obtain the well-known discrete modified Boussinesq equation in two-component form as well as its Lax pair in $3\times3$ matrix form through a 3-periodic reduction technique on the Hirota-Miwa equation and its Lax pair. We describe how Darboux transformations and binary Darboux transformations can be constructed for this two-component discrete integrable equation. These transformations are then used to obtain classes of explicit solutions in the form of Casorati- and Gramm-type determinants. $N$-soliton solutions of the discrete modified Boussinesq equation are discussed as well when taking …
We consider the discrete Boussinesq integrable system and the compatible set of differential difference, and partial differential equations. The latter not only encode the complete hierarchy of the Boussisesq equation, but also incorporate the hyperbolic Ernst equations for an Einstein-Maxwell-Weyl field in general relativity. We demonstrate a specific symmetry reduction of the partial differential equations, to a six-parameter, second order coupled system of ordinary differential equations, which is conjectured to be of Garnier type.
For the 3-component dispersionless Boussinesq-type system, we construct two compatible nontrivial finite deformations for the Lie algebra structure in the symmetry algebra.
We derive infinitely many conservation laws for some multi-dimensionally consistent lattice equations from their Lax pairs. These lattice equations are the Nijhoff-Quispel-Capel equation, lattice Boussinesq equation, lattice nonlinear Schrödinger equation, modified lattice Boussinesq equation, Hietarinta's Boussinesq-type equations, Schwarzian lattice Boussinesq equation and Toda-modified lattice Boussinesq equation.
We consider a modified Boussinesq type equation. The Painlevé test of the WTC method is performed for this equation and it shows that the equation has weak Painlevé property. Some exact solutions are constructed.
We consider a family of higher-order Boussinesq equations with an arbitrary nonlinearity. We determine the classes of equations so that a certain type of Lie symmetry algebra is admitted in this family. In case of a quadratic nonlinearity we provide several exact solutions, some of which are in terms of elliptic functions.
We discuss the dispersionless Boussinesq type equation, which is equivalent to the Benney-Lax equation, being a system of equations of hydrodynamical type. This equation was discussed in <http://dx.doi.org/doi:10.1088/0305-4470/27/1/013>. The results include: a description of local and nonlocal Hamiltonian and symplectic structures, hierarchies of symmetries, hierarchies of conservation laws, recursion operators for symmetries and generating functions of conservation laws (cosymmetries). Highly interesting are the appearances of operators that send conservation laws and symmetries to each othe…
This work concerns soliton-type numerical solutions for two Whitham-Boussinesq-type models. Solitary waves are computed using an iterative Newton-type and continuation methods with high accuracy. The method allow us to compute solitary waves with large amplitude and speed close to the singular limit. These solitary waves are set as initial data and overtaking collisions are considered for both systems. We show that both system satisfy the geometric Lax-categorization of two-soliton collision. Numerical evidences indicate that one of the systems also admits an algebraic Lax-categorization based…
The possible solitary wave solutions for a general Boussinesq (GBQ) type fluid model are studied analytically. After proving the non-Painlevé integrability of the model, the first type of exact explicit travelling solitary wave with a special velocity selection is found by the truncated Painlevé expansion. The general solitary waves with different travelling velocities can be studied by casting the problems to the Newtonian quasi-particles moving in some proper one dimensional potential fields. For some special velocity selections, the solitary waves possess different shapes, say, the left mov…
We establish an infinite family of solutions in terms of elliptic functions of the lattice Boussinesq systems by setting up a direct linearisation scheme, which provides the solution structure for those equations in the elliptic case. The latter, which contains as main structural element a Cauchy kernel on the torus, is obtained from a dimensional reduction of the elliptic direct linearisation scheme of the lattice Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, which requires the introduction of a novel technical concept, namely the "elliptic cube root of unity". Thus, in order to implement the reduction we…
Integrable multi-component lattice equations of the Boussinesq family have been known for some time. Recently some new equations of this type were found using the Consistency-Around-the-Cube approach. Here we investigate one of these models, B-2, and in particular the consequences of a nonzero deformation parameter $b_0>0$, which allows special kinds of solitons in the parameter range $-b_0/3<k<b_0$.
A new variant of the $(2+1)$-dimensional [$(2+1)d$] Boussinesq equation was recently introduced by J. Y. Zhu, arxiv:1704.02779v2, 2017; see eq. (3). First, we derive in this paper the one-soliton solutions of both bright and dark types for the extended $(2+1)d$ Boussinesq equation by using the traveling wave method. Second, $N$-soliton, breather, and rational solutions are obtained by using the Hirota bilinear method and the long wave limit. Nonsingular rational solutions of two types were obtained analytically, namely: (i) rogue-wave solutions having the form of W-shaped lines waves and (ii) …
The Boussinesq equations are known since the end of the XIXst century. However, the proliferation of various \textsc{Boussinesq}-type systems started only in the second half of the XXst century. Today they come under various flavours depending on the goals of the modeller. At the beginning of the XXIst century an effort to classify such systems, at least for even bottoms, was undertaken and developed according to both different physical regimes and mathematical properties, with special emphasis, in this last sense, on the existence of symmetry groups and their connection to conserved quantitie…
In this work the longitudinal wave equation through magneto-electro-elastic circular rod is studied analytically. Painlevé test is performed to check integrability of the equation. Exact solitary wave solutions are found by homogeneous balance method and Tanh method and are plotted using suitable values of physical parameters. A similar solution to an earlier related work [17, 20] is obtained. However we have obtained a new solution as well. Lie symmetry analysis has been done and similarity reduction of the equation is presented. Numerical results related to phase velocity etc for different m…
It is shown that the integrable discrete Schwarzian KP (dSKP) equation which constitutes an algebraic superposition formula associated with, for instance, the Schwarzian KP hierarchy, the classical Darboux transformation and quasi-conformal mappings encapsulates nothing but a fundamental theorem of ancient Greek geometry. Thus, it is demonstrated that the connection with Menelaus' theorem and, more generally, Clifford configurations renders the dSKP equation a natural object of inversive geometry on the plane. The geometric and algebraic integrability of dSKP lattices and their reductions to l…
Deformations of the structure constants for a class of associative noncommutative algebras generated by Deformation Driving Algebras (DDA's) are defined and studied. These deformations are governed by the Central System (CS). Such a CS is studied for the case of DDA being the algebra of shifts. Concrete examples of deformations for the three-dimensional algebra governed by discrete and mixed continuous-discrete Boussinesq (BSQ) and WDVV equations are presented. It is shown that the theory of the Darboux transformations, at least for the BSQ case, is completely incorporated into the proposed sc…
We present a hierarchy of discrete systems whose first members are the lattice modified Korteweg-de Vries equation, and the lattice modified Boussinesq equation. The N-th member in the hierarchy is an N-component system defined on an elementary plaquette in the 2-dimensional lattice. The system is multidimensionally consistent and a Lagrangian which respects this feature, i.e., which has the desirable closure property, is obtained.
In this paper we construct a weakly-nonlinear d'Alembert-type solution of the Cauchy problem for a Boussinesq-Klein-Gordon equation. Similarly to our earlier work based on the use of spatial Fourier series, we consider the problem in the class of periodic functions on an interval of finite length (including the limiting case of an "infinite" interval with zero boundary conditions), and work with the equation describing a deviation from the mean value. Unlike our earlier paper, here we develop a novel multiple-scales procedure involving fast characteristic variables and two slow time scales, wh…
Weakly-nonlinear waves in a layered waveguide with an imperfect interface (soft bonding between the layers) can be modelled using coupled Boussinesq equations. We assume that the materials of the layers have close mechanical properties, in which case the system can support radiating solitary waves. We construct a weakly-nonlinear d'Alembert-type solution of this system, considering the problem in the class of periodic functions on an interval of finite length. The solution is constructed using a novel multiple-scales procedure involving fast characteristic variables and two slow time variables…
Changes of type transitions for the two-component hydrodynamic type systems are discussed. It is shown that these systems generically assume the Jordan form (with 2 X 2 Jordan block) on the transition line with hodograph equations becoming parabolic. Conditions which allow or forbid the transition from hyperbolic domain to elliptic one are discussed. Hamiltonian systems and their special subclasses and equations, like dispersionless nonlinear Schroedinger, dispersionless Boussinesq, one-dimensional isentropic gas dynamics equations and nonlinear wave equations are studied. Numerical results co…
Interrelations between discrete deformations of the structure constants for associative algebras and discrete integrable systems are reviewed. A theory of deformations for associative algebras is presented. Closed left ideal generated by the elements representing the multiplication table plays a central role in this theory. Deformations of the structure constants are generated by the Deformation Driving Algebra and governed by the central system of equations. It is demonstrated that many discrete equations like discrete Boussinesq equation, discrete WDVV equation, discrete Schwarzian KP and BK…
One dimensional nonlinear lattices with harmonic long range interaction potentials (LRIP) having an inverse power kernel type, are studied. For the nearest neighbour nonlinear interaction we consider the anharmonic potential of the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam problem and the ϕ^3+ϕ^4 potential as well. The continuum limit is obtained following the method used by Ishimori and several Boussinesq and KdV type equations with supplementary Hilbert transform terms are found. These nonlocal terms are introduced by the LRIP. For the ϕ^3+ϕ^4 nearest neighbour interactions the continuum approximation turns out to a…
We recently introduced a class of ${\mathbb{Z}}_N$ graded discrete Lax pairs and studied the associated discrete integrable systems (lattice equations). In this paper we introduce the corresponding Yang-Baxter maps. Many well known examples belong to this scheme for $N=2$, so, for $N\geq 3$, our systems may be regarded as generalisations of these. In particular, for each $N$ we introduce a generalisation of the map $H_{III}^B$ in the classification of scalar Yang-Baxter maps. For $N=3$ this is equivalent to the Yang-Baxter map associated with the discrete modified Boussinesq equation. For $N\g…
