In 2015, a new two dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope, called phagraphene, was theoretically proposed. Based on this structure, we propose here a new boron nitride structure called phaBN. It is composed by three types of rings: pentagons, hexagons and heptagons. We investigate the electronic, optical, vibrational and thermodynamic properties of phaBN using first-principles calculations in a density functional theory (DFT) framework. Our calculations revealed that the phaBN has an energy gap of 2.739 eV, which is almost half of the energy gap of the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), thus being a semiconductor material. By means of the optical, vibrational and thermodynamic properties, it was possible to observe the absorption interval, the stability of the structure and its formation process, respectively.
The structural, vibrational, thermodynamical and optical properties of technologically important, weakly coupled MAX compound, Sc2AlC are calculated using density functional theory (DFT). The structural properties of Sc2AlC are compared with results reported earlier. The vibrational, thermodynamical, and optical properties are theoretically estimated for the first time. The phonon dispersion curve has been calculated and the dynamical stability of this compound has been investigated. The optical and acoustic modes are observed clearly. We have calculated the Helmholtz free energy (F), internal…
We have developed a methodology to study the thermodynamics of order-disorder transformations in n-component substitutional alloys that combines nonequilibrium methods, which can efficiently compute free energies, with Monte Carlo simulations, in which configurational and vibrational degrees of freedom are simultaneously considered on an equal footing basis. Furthermore, by appropriately constraining the system, we were able to compute the contributions to the vibrational entropy due to bond proportion, atomic size mismatch, and bulk volume effects. We have applied this methodology to calculat…
Plane-wave pseudopotential methods and density functional perturbation theory are used to calculate the phonon density of states and thermodynamic functions of h-P4O10. The calculated vibrational spectrum is in good agreement with the measured spectrum, but the calculations indicate some modifications in the interpretation of the spectrum, mainly suggesting changes in the number of components used to fit a few of the observed peaks. The calculated low-temperature heat capacity is in good agreement with the measured heat capacity, with a systematic offset of approximately -5 J mol-1 K-1, indepe…
Possible variations in the dynamical behaviour of LiYF$_{4}$ due to its structural changes following several pressure-induced phase transitions are examined by making use of the complementary techniques of quasi-harmonic lattice dynamics and molecular dynamics simulation. The phonon spectra in the entire Brillouin zone and the respective Gibbs free energies are calculated for the three high-pressure polymorphs of LiYF$_{4}$ that are stable at T = 0, with an aim to understand their relative stabilities as functions of pressure and temperature in terms of volume compression and vibrational entro…
Within the harmonic approximation, the effects of lattice vibration on the thermodynamics of nano-sized coherent clusters in bcc-Fe consisting of vacancies and/or copper are investigated. A combination of on-lattice simulated annealing based on Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations and off-lattice relaxation by Molecular Dynamics is applied to obtain the most stable cluster configurations at T = 0 K. The most recent interatomic potential built within the framework of the embedded atom method for the Fe-Cu system is used. The vibrational part of the total free energy of defect clusters in bcc-Fe i…
Thermal equations of state (EoS) are essential in several scientific domains. However, experimental determination of EoS parameters may be limited at extreme conditions, therefore, {\it ab~initio} calculations have become an important method to obtain them. Density Functional Theory (DFT) and its extensions with various degrees of approximations for the exchange and correlation (XC) energy is the method of choice, but large errors in the EoS parameters are still common. The alkali halides have been problematic from the onset of this field and the quest for appropriate DFT functionals for such …
Based on Density Functional Theory and Density Functional Perturbation Theory we have studied the thermodynamical and vibrational properties of Mg(AlH$_4$)$_2$.
We report results of a systematic study of structural, vibrational and thermodynamical properties of 34-atom bimetallic nanoparticles from the AgnCu34-n family using model interaction potentials as derived from the embedded atom method and in the harmonic approximation of lattice dynamics. Systematic trends in the bond length and dynamical properties can be explained largely on arguments based on local coordination and elemental environment. Thus increase in the number of silver atoms in a given neighborhood introduces a monotonic increase in bond length while increase of the copper content do…
Hot-atoms reactions mechanisms bring about reaction rates which are several orders of magnitude higher than those expected in the case of ad-atoms which have thermalized with the surface. This paper addresses the issue of a possible thermodynamic characterization of the adlayer under reactive conditions and at the steady state. In turn, this implies to tackle the question of determining the temperature of the ad-atoms. This is done by means of a nonequilibrium statistical thermodynamic approach, by exploiting a suitable definition of the entropy. The interplay between reaction rate, vibrationa…
We demonstrate that the discrete character of the vibrational spectrum of a small crystal accounts for size dependence of its thermodynamic properties and melting temperature. Using a self-consistent statistical method [Phys. Rev.B 66, 054302 (2002)] we derive the Gibbs free energy of free nanocrystalline plates and calculate the thermodynamic parameters as functions of plate thickness for Cu.
A method of statistical description of thermodynamic properties of nanocrystals is developed. It is established that size-dependent quantization of vibrational modes results in formation of excess pressure of the phonon gas acting outwards the crystal. Based on the concept of the phonon gas pressure, size dependence of thermodynamic properties of nanocrystals was described, and size influence on a shift of a phase transformation temperature was explained.
The thermodynamic properties of hcp-iron (ε-Fe) are essential for investigating planetary cores' internal structure and dynamic properties. Despite their importance to planetary sciences, experimental investigations of ε-Fe at relevant conditions are still challenging. Therefore, ab initio calculations are crucial to elucidating the thermodynamic properties of this system. Here we use a free energy calculation scheme based on the phonon gas model compatible with temperature-dependent phonon frequencies. We investigate the effects of electronic thermal excitations, which introduces a temperatur…
We report ab initio calculations of the electronic band structure and the phonon dispersion relations of the zincblende-type mercury chalcogenides (beta-HgS, HgSe, and HgTe). The latter have been used to evaluate the temperature dependence of the specific heat which has been compared with experimental data. The electronic band structure of these materials has been confirmed to have an inverted direct gap of the alpha-tin type, which makes HgSe and HgTe semimetallic. For beta-HgS, however, our calculations predict a negative spin-orbit splitting which restores semiconducting properties to the m…
The structural, dynamical, and thermodynamical properties of diamond, graphite and layered derivatives (graphene, rhombohedral graphite) are computed using a combination of density-functional theory (DFT) total-energy calculations and density-functional perturbation theory (DFPT) lattice dynamics at the GGA-PBE level. Overall, very good agreement is found for the structural properties and phonon dispersions, with the exception of the c/a ratio in graphite and the associated elastic constants and phonon dispersions. Both the C_33 elastic constant and the Gamma to A phonon dispersions are brough…
We applied an efficient methodology to separate vibrational and configurational entropies in bulk metallic glasses by means of molecular dynamics simulation based on a combination of non-equilibrium adiabatic switching and reversible scaling methods. This approach involves calculating the vibrational free energy using the Einstein crystal as a reference for the solid phase and the recently proposed Uhlenbeck-Ford model for the fluid phase. This methodology has the advantage that it does not require a crystalline solid phase for separating the entropies. Therefore, in principle, it is applicabl…
We have measured the specific heat of zincblende ZnS for several isotopic compositions and over a broad temperature range (3 to 1100 K). We have compared these results with calculations based on ab initio electronic band structures, performed using both LDA and GGA exchange- correlation functionals. We have compared the lattice dynamics obtained in this manner with experimental data and have calculated the one-phonon and two-phonon densities of states. We have also calculated mode Grueneisen parameters at a number of high symmetry points of the Brillouin zone. The electronic part of our calcul…
First-principles phonon calculations along with density functional theory (DFT) play an important role to study the dynamical and thermal properties of materials. Here, we investigate the effect of exchange correlation (XC) functionals on the vibrational and thermodynamic properties of CoSi. The role of 3s(2p) orbitals of Co(Si) as core/valence states on the phonon properties of this compound is also studied. Phonon calculations are carried out by finite displacement method with supercell approach using equilibrium crystal structures obtained from DFT calculations. The calculated results are c…
An algebraic model based on Lie-algebraic and discrete symmetry techniques is applied to the analysis of thermodynamic vibrational properties of molecules. The local anharmonic effects are described by a Morse-like potential and the corresponding anharmonic bosons are associated with the SU(2) algebra. A vibrational high-temperature partition function and the related thermodynamic functions are derived and studied in terms of the parameters of the model. The idea of a critical temperature is introduced in relation with the specific heat. A physical interpretation of a quantum deformation assoc…
Based on density functional theory the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo_3Al_2C in its well established β-Mn type ($P4_{1}32$) crystal structure is investigated. In particular, its thermodynamical and dynamical stabilities are studied by calculating lattice vibrations within the harmonic approximation. It is found that the fully stoichiometric compound is dynamically unstable. However, compounds with carbon vacancies, i.e., Mo_3Al_2C_{1-x}, can be dynamically stabilized for vacancy concentrations x > 0.09. By means of a simple thermodynamical model we estimate x ~ 0.13-0.14 for Mo_3Al_2C_{1…
A longstanding limitation of first-principles calculations of substitutional alloy phase diagrams is the difficulty to account for lattice vibrations. A survey of the theoretical and experimental literature seeking to quantify the impact of lattice vibrations on phase stability indicates that this effect can be substantial. Typical vibrational entropy differences between phases are of the order of 0.1 to 0.2 k_B/atom, which is comparable to the typical values of configurational entropy differences in binary alloys (at most 0.693 k_B/atom). This paper describes the basic formalism underlying ab…
We report ab-initio calculations of the phonon dispersion relation on the bulk and single layer of SnO and PbO. We identify Raman active modes and infrared active modes at the zone center Γ point. In agreement with experimental observations of Raman spectroscopy measurement, we find that A1g mode is higher in frequency than that of Eg mode. Moreover, the reason behind the shift of A2u mode to higher frequency for monolayer of both SnO and PbO is revealed from our calculations. We also find that long-range Coulomb interaction enhances the dielectric constant and Born effective charges in bulk S…
Unraveling the electronic, vibrational, thermodynamic, optical and piezoelectric properties of LiNbO$_3$, LiTaO$_3$ and Li$_2$NbTaO$_6$ from first-principles calculations
The structure, vibrational dynamics and thermodynamics of a chiral surface, Cu(532), has been calculated using a local approach and the harmonic approximation, with interatomic potentials based on the embedded atom method. The relaxation of atomic positions to the optimum configuration results in a complex relaxation pattern with strong contractions in the bond length of atoms near the kink and the step site and an equivalently large expansion near the least under-coordinated surface atoms. The low coordination of the atoms on the surface affects substantially the vibrational dynamics and ther…
A comprehensive, critical study of the vibrational, thermodynamic and thermoelastic properties of bcc iron is presented, using well established semi-empirical embedded-atom method potentials available in the literature. Classical molecular dynamics simulations are used to address temperature effects, where dynamical matrices are constructed as a time average of the second moment of the atomic displacements. The $C_{11}, C_{44}, C'$ elastic constants are then obtained from the sound velocities along high symmetry directions in reciprocal space. Results are compared to ultrasonic measurements an…
Beta-PtO2 is a useful transition metal dioxide, but its fundamental thermodynamic and elastic properties remain unexplored. Using first-principles calculations, we systematically studied the structure, phonon, thermodynamic and elastic properties of beta-PtO2. The lattice dynamics and structural stability of beta-PtO2 under pressure were studied using the phonon spectra and vibrational density of states. The vibrational frequencies of the optical modes of beta-PtO2 increase with elevating pressure; this result is comparable with the available experimental data. Then, the heat capacities and th…
We investigate the relative thermodynamic stability of the $3\times3$, $5\times5$, $7\times7$, $9\times9$ and infinitely large structures related to the dimers-adatoms-stacking faults family of Si$(111)$ surface reconstructions by means of first-principles calculations. Upon accounting for the vibrational contribution to the surface free energy, we find that the $5\times5$ structure is more stable than the $7\times7$ at low temperatures. While a phase transition is anticipated to occur at around room temperature, the $7\times7\rightarrow5\times5$ transformation upon cooling is hindered by the …
First principles calculations of the vibrational, thermodynamic and mechanical properties of the Ni-Ti-Sn Heusler and half-Heusler compounds have been performed. First, we have calculated the Raman and infrared spectra of NiTiSn, providing benchmark theoretical data directly useful for the assignments of its experimental spectra and clarifying the debate reported in the literature on the assignment of its modes. Then, we have discussed the significant vibrational density-of-states of Ni2TiSn at low-frequencies. These states are at the origin of (i) its smaller free energy, (ii) its higher entr…
By combination of two independent approaches, nuclear resonant inelastic X-ray scattering and first-principles calculations in the framework of density functional theory, we determine the element-resolved vibrational density of states in the ferromagnetic low temperature and paramagnetic high temperature phase of LaFe$_{13-x}$Si$_x$. This allows us to derive the lattice and electronic contribution to the entropy change at the first-order phase transformation, which are both of considerable magnitude. The change in lattice entropy is dominated by magneto-elastic softening, which originates from…
While the vibrational thermodynamics of materials with small anharmonicity at low temperatures has been understood well based on the harmonic phonons approximation; at high temperatures, this understanding must accommodate how phonons interact with other phonons or with other excitations. We shall see that the phonon-phonon interactions give rise to interesting coupling problems, and essentially modify the equilibrium and non-equilibrium properties of materials, e.g., thermal expansion, thermodynamic stability, heat capacity, optical properties, thermal transport and other nonlinear properties…
The thermodynamic and physical properties of the Laves phase Fe2Mo have been investigated using the finite-temperature quantum mechanical calculations within the frame of the density functional theory (DFT). All relevant free energy contributions including electronic, vibrational and magnetic excitations are considered. The quasi-harmonic Debye - Gruneisen theory is used. In this work, a new method of searching a thermal expansion path of compounds is proposed. It allows to reduce the problem to a one-dimensional case and minimize the free energy in one variable, in volume. The heat capacity, …

Optically active defect centers in diamond are of considerable interest, and ab initio calculations have provided valuable insight into the physics of these systems. Candidate structures for the Xe center in diamond, for which little structural information is known, are modeled using density functional theory. The relative thermodynamic stabilities were calculated for two likely structural arrangements. The split-vacancy structure is found to be the most stable for all temperatures up to 1500 K. A vibrational analysis was also carried out, predicting Raman- and IR-active modes which may aid in…

The structural, electronic, and vibrational thermodynamic properties of the (ZnO)$_n$ (n=2-16) clusters are studied using density functional - full potential computations. The results show, small clusters up to $n=9$ stabilize in the 2D ring shape geometries while the larger clusters prefer the 3D cage like structures. The ring to cage structural cross over in ZnO clusters is studied by investigating the behavior of the Zn-O-Zn bond angle, the Zn-O bond strength, and the number of bonds in the systems. It is argued that 12 is the lowest magic number of ZnO clusters at ground state, while finit…

The first part of this work is focused on thermodynamics. We compute via DFT energetic, magnetic and vibrational properties and the bcc-fcc phase diagram, revealing the relative importance between magnetic and vibrational entropies…
When the energy content of a resonant mode of a crystalline solid in thermodynamic equilibrium is directly measured, assuming that quantum effects can be neglected it coincides with temperature except for a proportionality factor. This is due to the principle of energy equipartition and the equilibrium hypothesis. However, most natural systems found in nature are not in thermodynamic equilibrium and thus the principle cannot be granted. We measured the extent to which the low-frequency modes of vibration of a solid can defy energy equipartition, in presence of a steady state heat flux, even cl…

In this work, we develop a method to quantify uncertainty associated with density functional theory predicted harmonic vibration frequencies utilizing the built-in error estimation capabilities of the BEEF-vdW exchange-correlation functional. The method is computationally efficiency by estimating the uncertainty at nearly the same computational cost as a single vibrational frequency calculation. We demonstrate the utility and robustness of the method by showin…

Graphene oxide (GO) is an important intermediate to prepare graphene and it is also a versatile material with various applications. However, despite its importance, the detailed structure of GO is still unclear. For example, previous theoretical studies based on energetics have suggested that hydroxyl chain is an important structural motif of GO, which, however, is found to be contrary to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment. In this study, we check both thermodynamic and kinetic aspects missed previously. First principles thermodynamics gives a free energy based stability ordering simi…
We report the effects of lattice dynamics on thermodynamic stability of binary $R_{1-x}$Fe$_x$ $(0<x<1)$ compounds ($R$: rare-earth elements, Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, and Dy) at finite temperature predicted by first-principles calculation based on density functional theory (DFT). We first demonstrate that the thermodynamic stability of $R_{1-x}$Fe$_x$ $(0<x<1)$ alloys cannot be predicted accurately by the conventional approach, where only the static DFT energy at $T = 0$ K is used. This issue can be overcome by considering the entropy contribution, including electronic and vibrational free energies, and…
We assess the validity of various exchange-correlation functionals for computing the structural, vibrational, dielectric, and thermodynamical properties of materials in the framework of density-functional perturbation theory (DFPT). We investigate a wide variety of materials including a semiconductor (silicon), a metal (copper), and various insulators (SiO$_2$ $α$-quartz and stishovite, ZrSiO$_4$ zircon, and MgO periclase). For the…

Bilayer graphene has been studied at temperatures between 12 and 1500~K for zero external stress, using the LCBOPII effective potential. We concentrate on the thermal expansion, in-plane and out-of-plane compressibility, and specific heat. Additional insight into the meaning of our results for bilayer graphene is obtained from a comparison with data obtained from PIMD simulations for monolayer graphene and graphi…

The adsorption of hydrogen at nonpolar GaN(1-100) surfaces and its impact on the electronic and vibrational properties is investigated using surface electron spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For the surface mediated dissociation of H2 and the subsequent adsorption of H, an energy barrier of 0.55 eV has to be overcome. The calculated kinetic surface phase diagram indicates that the reaction is kinetically hindered at low pressures and low temperatures. At higher temperatures ab-initio thermodynamics show, that the H-free surface is energetically fav…

Phonons are the primary heat carriers in non-metallic solids. In compositionally heterogeneous materials, the thermal properties are believed to be mainly governed by the disrupted phonon transport due to mass disorder and strain fluctuations, while the effects of compositional fluctuation induced local phonon states are usually ignored. Here, by scanning transmission electron microscopy electron energy loss spectroscopy and sophisticated calculations, we identify the vibrational properties of ingredient-dependent interface phonon modes in AlxGa1-xN and quantify their various contributions to …
