The thermodynamic properties of hcp-iron (ε-Fe) are essential for investigating planetary cores' internal structure and dynamic properties. Despite their importance to planetary sciences, experimental investigations of ε-Fe at relevant conditions are still challenging. Therefore, ab initio calculations are crucial to elucidating the thermodynamic properties of this system. Here we use a free energy calculation scheme based on the phonon gas model compatible with temperature-dependent phonon frequencies. We investigate the effects of electronic thermal excitations, which introduces a temperature dependence on phonon frequencies, and the implication for the thermodynamic properties of ε-Fe at extreme pressure (P) and temperature (T) conditions. We disregard phonon-phonon interactions, i.e., anharmonicity and their effect on phonon frequencies. Nevertheless, the current scheme is also applicable to T-dependent anharmonic frequencies. We conclude that the impact of thermal electronic excitations on vibrational properties is not significant up to ~ 4,000 K at 200 GPa but should not be ignored at higher temperatures or pressures. However, the static free energy, Fst, must always include the effect of thermal excitation fully in a continuum of Ts. Our results for isentropic equations of state show good agreement with data from recent ramp compression experiments up to 1,400 GPa conducted at the National Ignition Facility (NIF).
The structural, vibrational, thermodynamical and optical properties of technologically important, weakly coupled MAX compound, Sc2AlC are calculated using density functional theory (DFT). The structural properties of Sc2AlC are compared with results reported earlier. The vibrational, thermodynamical, and optical properties are theoretically estimated for the first time. The phonon dispersion curve has been calculated and the dynamical stability of this compound has been investigated. The optical and acoustic modes are observed clearly. We have calculated the Helmholtz free energy (F), internal…
We have developed a methodology to study the thermodynamics of order-disorder transformations in n-component substitutional alloys that combines nonequilibrium methods, which can efficiently compute free energies, with Monte Carlo simulations, in which configurational and vibrational degrees of freedom are simultaneously considered on an equal footing basis. Furthermore, by appropriately constraining the system, we were able to compute the contributions to the vibrational entropy due to bond proportion, atomic size mismatch, and bulk volume effects. We have applied this methodology to calculat…
Plane-wave pseudopotential methods and density functional perturbation theory are used to calculate the phonon density of states and thermodynamic functions of h-P4O10. The calculated vibrational spectrum is in good agreement with the measured spectrum, but the calculations indicate some modifications in the interpretation of the spectrum, mainly suggesting changes in the number of components used to fit a few of the observed peaks. The calculated low-temperature heat capacity is in good agreement with the measured heat capacity, with a systematic offset of approximately -5 J mol-1 K-1, indepe…
In 2015, a new two dimensional (2D) carbon allotrope, called phagraphene, was theoretically proposed. Based on this structure, we propose here a new boron nitride structure called phaBN. It is composed by three types of rings: pentagons, hexagons and heptagons. We investigate the electronic, optical, vibrational and thermodynamic properties of phaBN using first-principles calculations in a density functional theory (DFT) framework. Our calculations revealed that the phaBN has an energy gap of 2.739 eV, which is almost half of the energy gap of the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), thus being a s…
We have identified a new type of transition from extended to localized vibrational states in one-dimensional graded elastic chains of coupled harmonic oscillators, in which the vibrating masses or nearest-coupling force constants vary linearly along the chain. We found that the delocalization transition occurs at the maximum frequency of the corresponding homogeneous chain, which is in a continuous single band. Although each state in the localized phase, called gradon, can be regarded as an impurity localized mode, the localization profile is clearly distinct from usual impurity modes or the A…
Possible variations in the dynamical behaviour of LiYF$_{4}$ due to its structural changes following several pressure-induced phase transitions are examined by making use of the complementary techniques of quasi-harmonic lattice dynamics and molecular dynamics simulation. The phonon spectra in the entire Brillouin zone and the respective Gibbs free energies are calculated for the three high-pressure polymorphs of LiYF$_{4}$ that are stable at T = 0, with an aim to understand their relative stabilities as functions of pressure and temperature in terms of volume compression and vibrational entro…
Within the harmonic approximation, the effects of lattice vibration on the thermodynamics of nano-sized coherent clusters in bcc-Fe consisting of vacancies and/or copper are investigated. A combination of on-lattice simulated annealing based on Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations and off-lattice relaxation by Molecular Dynamics is applied to obtain the most stable cluster configurations at T = 0 K. The most recent interatomic potential built within the framework of the embedded atom method for the Fe-Cu system is used. The vibrational part of the total free energy of defect clusters in bcc-Fe i…
Understanding the vibrational and thermal properties of amorphous solids is one of the most discussed and long-standing issues in condensed matter physics. Recent works have made significant steps towards understanding harmonic vibrational states. In particular, it has been established that quasi-localized vibrational modes emerge in addition to phonon-like vibrational modes. In this work, we study the anharmonic properties of these vibrational modes. We find that vibrational modes exhibit anharmonicities that induce particle rearrangements and cause transitions to different states. These anha…
Thermal equations of state (EoS) are essential in several scientific domains. However, experimental determination of EoS parameters may be limited at extreme conditions, therefore, {\it ab~initio} calculations have become an important method to obtain them. Density Functional Theory (DFT) and its extensions with various degrees of approximations for the exchange and correlation (XC) energy is the method of choice, but large errors in the EoS parameters are still common. The alkali halides have been problematic from the onset of this field and the quest for appropriate DFT functionals for such …
Palladium is an ideal system for understanding the behavior of hydrogen in metals. In Pd, H is located both in octahedral sites and in dislocation cores, which act as nanoscale H traps and form Cottrell atmospheres. Adjacent to a dislocation core, H experiences the largest possible distortion in alpha-Pd. Ab initio density-functional theory computes the potential energy for a hydrogen in an octahedral site in alpha-Pd and in a trap site at the core of a partial of an edge dislocation. The Pd partial dislocation core changes the environment for H, distorting the H-Pd bonding which changes the l…
Based on Density Functional Theory and Density Functional Perturbation Theory we have studied the thermodynamical and vibrational properties of Mg(AlH$_4$)$_2$.
We report results of a systematic study of structural, vibrational and thermodynamical properties of 34-atom bimetallic nanoparticles from the AgnCu34-n family using model interaction potentials as derived from the embedded atom method and in the harmonic approximation of lattice dynamics. Systematic trends in the bond length and dynamical properties can be explained largely on arguments based on local coordination and elemental environment. Thus increase in the number of silver atoms in a given neighborhood introduces a monotonic increase in bond length while increase of the copper content do…
Hot-atoms reactions mechanisms bring about reaction rates which are several orders of magnitude higher than those expected in the case of ad-atoms which have thermalized with the surface. This paper addresses the issue of a possible thermodynamic characterization of the adlayer under reactive conditions and at the steady state. In turn, this implies to tackle the question of determining the temperature of the ad-atoms. This is done by means of a nonequilibrium statistical thermodynamic approach, by exploiting a suitable definition of the entropy. The interplay between reaction rate, vibrationa…
We show that the dynamics of (vertical) Franck-Condon excitations in the regime where Holstein-coupled vibrational modes mix strongly with electronic degrees of freedom sharply contrasts with the known self-localized behavior of vibrationally relaxed excitations. Instead, the strongly-coupled modes are found to periodically induce resonances between interacting electronic sites, during which effective excitation transfer occurs, allowing Franck-Condon excitations to attain substantial mean square displacements under conditions where relaxed excitations are essentially trapped to a single site.…
In crystals, molecules thermally vibrate around the periodic lattice sites. Vibrational motions are well understood in terms of phonons, which carry heat and control heat transport. The situation is notably different in disordered solids, where vibrational excitations are not phonons and can be even localized. Recent numerical work has established the concept of elastic heterogeneity: disordered solids show inhomogeneous local mechanical response. Clearly, the heterogeneous nature of elastic properties strongly influences vibrational and thermal properties, and it is expected to be the origin …
High energy electron beams can now be routinely focused to 1-2 Å and offer the ability to obtain vibrational information from materials using monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). Here it is shown that long and short wavelength phonons can be probed simultaneously with on-axis vibrational STEM EELS. The advantage of using focused electron beams is that the short wavelength phonons are probed via impact scattering while the long-wavelength modes are probed via dipole scattering. The localized character of the short-waveleng…
For molecules and materials responding to femtosecond-scale optical laser pulses, we predict maximum relative excitation of a Raman-active vibrational mode with period T when the pulse has an FWHM duration of 0.42 T. This result follows from a general analytical model, and is precisely confirmed by detailed density-functional-based dynamical simulations for C60 and a carbon nanotube, which include anharmonicity, nonlinearity, no assumptions about the polarizability tensor, and no averaging over rapid oscillations within the pulse. The mode specificity is, of course, best at low temperature and…
Dynamical charge transfer processes at molecule-metal interfaces proceed in the few fs time scale that renders them highly relevant to electronic excitations in optoelectronic devices. Yet, knowledge thereof is limited when electronic ground state situations are considered that implicate charge transfer directly at the fermi energy. Here we show that such processes can be accessed by means of vibrational excitations, with non-adiabatic electron-vibron coupling leading to distinct asymmetric line shapes. Thereby the characteristic time scale of this interfacial dynamical charge transfer can be …
Addressing the role of quantum coherence in the interplay between the different matter constituents (electrons, phonons and spin) is a critical step towards understanding transition metal oxides and design complex materials with new functionalities. Here we use coherent vibrational control of onsite d-d electronic transitions in a model edge-sharing insulating transition metal oxide (CuGeO3) to single-out the effects of vibrational coherence in electron-phonon coupling. By comparing time domain experiments based on high and low frequency ultrashort pumps with a fully quantum description of pho…
We report ab initio calculations of the electronic band structure and the phonon dispersion relations of the zincblende-type mercury chalcogenides (beta-HgS, HgSe, and HgTe). The latter have been used to evaluate the temperature dependence of the specific heat which has been compared with experimental data. The electronic band structure of these materials has been confirmed to have an inverted direct gap of the alpha-tin type, which makes HgSe and HgTe semimetallic. For beta-HgS, however, our calculations predict a negative spin-orbit splitting which restores semiconducting properties to the m…

The structural, dynamical, and thermodynamical properties of diamond, graphite and layered derivatives (graphene, rhombohedral graphite) are computed using a combination of density-functional theory (DFT) total-energy calculations and density-functional perturbation theory (DFPT) lattice dynamics at the GGA-PBE level. Overall, very good agreement is found for the structural properties and phonon dispersions, with the exception of the c/a ratio in graphite and the associated elastic constants and phonon dispersions. Both the C_33 elastic constant and the Gamma to A phonon dispersions are brough…
In order to deepen in the knowledge of the vibrational properties of 2-dimensional MoS2 atomic layers, a complete and systematic Raman scattering analysis has been performed using both bulk single crystal MoS2 samples and atomically thin MoS2 layers. Raman spectra have been measured under non-resonant and resonant conditions using seven different excitation wavelengths from near-infrared (NIR) to ultraviolet (UV). These measurements have allowed to observe and identify 41 peaks, among which 22 have not been previously experimentally observed for this compound, characterizing the existence of d…
We applied an efficient methodology to separate vibrational and configurational entropies in bulk metallic glasses by means of molecular dynamics simulation based on a combination of non-equilibrium adiabatic switching and reversible scaling methods. This approach involves calculating the vibrational free energy using the Einstein crystal as a reference for the solid phase and the recently proposed Uhlenbeck-Ford model for the fluid phase. This methodology has the advantage that it does not require a crystalline solid phase for separating the entropies. Therefore, in principle, it is applicabl…
We have measured the specific heat of zincblende ZnS for several isotopic compositions and over a broad temperature range (3 to 1100 K). We have compared these results with calculations based on ab initio electronic band structures, performed using both LDA and GGA exchange- correlation functionals. We have compared the lattice dynamics obtained in this manner with experimental data and have calculated the one-phonon and two-phonon densities of states. We have also calculated mode Grueneisen parameters at a number of high symmetry points of the Brillouin zone. The electronic part of our calcul…
First-principles phonon calculations along with density functional theory (DFT) play an important role to study the dynamical and thermal properties of materials. Here, we investigate the effect of exchange correlation (XC) functionals on the vibrational and thermodynamic properties of CoSi. The role of 3s(2p) orbitals of Co(Si) as core/valence states on the phonon properties of this compound is also studied. Phonon calculations are carried out by finite displacement method with supercell approach using equilibrium crystal structures obtained from DFT calculations. The calculated results are c…
An algebraic model based on Lie-algebraic and discrete symmetry techniques is applied to the analysis of thermodynamic vibrational properties of molecules. The local anharmonic effects are described by a Morse-like potential and the corresponding anharmonic bosons are associated with the SU(2) algebra. A vibrational high-temperature partition function and the related thermodynamic functions are derived and studied in terms of the parameters of the model. The idea of a critical temperature is introduced in relation with the specific heat. A physical interpretation of a quantum deformation assoc…
We report a first principles study of the structure and the vibrational properties of the Si(100)-H(2 \times 1) surface in an electric field. The calculated vibrational parameters are used to model the vibrational modes in the presence of the electric field corresponding to a realistic STM tip-surface geometry. We find that local one-phonon excitations have short lifetimes (10 ps at room temperature) due to incoherent lateral diffusion, while diffusion of local multi-phonon excitations are suppressed due to anharmonic frequency shifts and have much longer lifetimes (10 ns at room temperature).…
Based on density functional theory the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo_3Al_2C in its well established β-Mn type ($P4_{1}32$) crystal structure is investigated. In particular, its thermodynamical and dynamical stabilities are studied by calculating lattice vibrations within the harmonic approximation. It is found that the fully stoichiometric compound is dynamically unstable. However, compounds with carbon vacancies, i.e., Mo_3Al_2C_{1-x}, can be dynamically stabilized for vacancy concentrations x > 0.09. By means of a simple thermodynamical model we estimate x ~ 0.13-0.14 for Mo_3Al_2C_{1…
A longstanding limitation of first-principles calculations of substitutional alloy phase diagrams is the difficulty to account for lattice vibrations. A survey of the theoretical and experimental literature seeking to quantify the impact of lattice vibrations on phase stability indicates that this effect can be substantial. Typical vibrational entropy differences between phases are of the order of 0.1 to 0.2 k_B/atom, which is comparable to the typical values of configurational entropy differences in binary alloys (at most 0.693 k_B/atom). This paper describes the basic formalism underlying ab…
We report ab-initio calculations of the phonon dispersion relation on the bulk and single layer of SnO and PbO. We identify Raman active modes and infrared active modes at the zone center Γ point. In agreement with experimental observations of Raman spectroscopy measurement, we find that A1g mode is higher in frequency than that of Eg mode. Moreover, the reason behind the shift of A2u mode to higher frequency for monolayer of both SnO and PbO is revealed from our calculations. We also find that long-range Coulomb interaction enhances the dielectric constant and Born effective charges in bulk S…
Unraveling the electronic, vibrational, thermodynamic, optical and piezoelectric properties of LiNbO$_3$, LiTaO$_3$ and Li$_2$NbTaO$_6$ from first-principles calculations
One of the long-standing issues concerning the thermal properties of amorphous solids is the complex pattern of phonon transport. Recent advances in experiments and computer simulations have indicated a crossover from Rayleigh scattering to viscous damping. A number of theories have been proposed, yet critical tests are missing and the validity of these theories is unclear. In particular, the precise location of the crossover frequency remains controversial, and more critically, even the validity of the Rayleigh scattering itself has been seriously questioned. The present work settles these is…
The soft character of organic materials leads to strong coupling between molecular nuclear and electronic dynamics. This coupling opens the way to control charge transport in organic electronic devices by inducing molecular vibrational motions. However, despite encouraging theoretical predictions, experimental realization of such control has remained elusive. Here we demonstrate experimentally that photoconductivity in a model organic optoelectronic device can be controlled by the selective excitation of molecular vibrations. Using an ultrafast infrared laser source to create a coherent superp…
