Addressing the role of quantum coherence in the interplay between the different matter constituents (electrons, phonons and spin) is a critical step towards understanding transition metal oxides and design complex materials with new functionalities. Here we use coherent vibrational control of onsite d-d electronic transitions in a model edge-sharing insulating transition metal oxide (CuGeO3) to single-out the effects of vibrational coherence in electron-phonon coupling. By comparing time domain experiments based on high and low frequency ultrashort pumps with a fully quantum description of phonon assisted absorption, we could distinguish the processes associated to incoherent thermal lattice fluctuations from those driven by the coherent motion of the atoms. In particular, while thermal fluctuation of the phonon bath uniformly increases the electronic absorption, the resonant excitation of phonon modes results also in light-induced transparency which is coherently controlled by the vibrational motion.
Using an efficient optimal control scheme to determine the exciting fields, we theoretically demonstrate the optical creation of vibrational intrinsic localized modes (ILMs) in anharmonic perfect lattices with realistic interatomic potentials. For systems with finite size, we show that ILMs can be excited directly by applying a sequence of femtosecond visible laser pulses at THz repetition rates. For periodic lattices, ILMs can be created indirectly via decay of an unstable extended lattice mode which is excited optically either by a sequence of pulses as described above or by a single picosec…
Understanding the vibrational and thermal properties of amorphous solids is one of the most discussed and long-standing issues in condensed matter physics. Recent works have made significant steps towards understanding harmonic vibrational states. In particular, it has been established that quasi-localized vibrational modes emerge in addition to phonon-like vibrational modes. In this work, we study the anharmonic properties of these vibrational modes. We find that vibrational modes exhibit anharmonicities that induce particle rearrangements and cause transitions to different states. These anha…
Vibrational energy transfer from photo-excited single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to coupled proteins is a key to engineer thermally induced biological reactions such as photothermal therapy. Here, we explored vibrational energy transfer from the photo-excited SWCNTs to different adsorbed biological materials by means of a femtosecond pump-probe technique. We show that the vibrational relaxation time of the radial breathing modes (RBMs) in SWCNTs significantly depends on the structure of coupled materials, i.e. proteins or biopolymers, indicating the vibrational energy transfer is governed …
We have identified a new type of transition from extended to localized vibrational states in one-dimensional graded elastic chains of coupled harmonic oscillators, in which the vibrating masses or nearest-coupling force constants vary linearly along the chain. We found that the delocalization transition occurs at the maximum frequency of the corresponding homogeneous chain, which is in a continuous single band. Although each state in the localized phase, called gradon, can be regarded as an impurity localized mode, the localization profile is clearly distinct from usual impurity modes or the A…
We numerically study the evolution of the vibrational density of states $D(ω)$ of zero-temperature glasses when their kinetic stability is varied over an extremely broad range, ranging from poorly annealed glasses obtained by instantaneous quenches from above the onset temperature, to ultrastable glasses obtained by quenching systems thermalised below the experimental glass temperature. The low-frequency part of the density of states splits between extended and quasi-localized modes. Extended modes exhibit a boson peak crossing over to Debye behaviour ($D(ω) \sim ω^2$) at low-frequency, with a…
The third order optical response of bosonic excitons is calculated using the Green's function solution of the Nonlinear Exciton Equations (NEE) which establish a quasiparticle-scattering mechanism for optical nonlinearities. Both time ordered and non ordered forms of the response function which represent time and frequency domain techniques, respectively, are derived. New components of the response tensor are predicted for isotropic ensembles of periodic chiral structures to first order in the optical wavevector. The nonlocal nonlinear response function is calculated in momentum space, where t…
The vibrational density of states $D(ω)$ of solids controls their thermal and transport properties. In crystals, the low-frequency modes are extended phonons distributed in frequency according to Debye's law, $D(ω) \propto ω^2$. In amorphous solids, phonons are damped, and at low frequency $D(ω)$ comprises extended modes in excess over Debye's prediction, leading to the so-called boson peak in $D(ω)/ω^2$ at $ω_{\rm bp}$, and quasi-localized (QLMs) ones. Here we show that boson peak and phonon attenuation in the Rayleigh scattering regime are related, as suggested by correlated fluctuating elas…
The existence of anharmonic localization of lattice vibrations in a perfect 3-D diatomic ionic crystal is established for the rigid-ion model by molecular dynamics simulations. For a realistic set of NaI potential parameters, an intrinsic localized gap mode vibrating in the [111] direction is observed for fcc and zinc blende lattices. An axial elastic distortion is an integral feature of this mode which forms more readily for the zinc blende than for the fcc structure. Molecular dynamics simulations verify that in each structure this localized mode may be stable for at least 200 cycles.
Phonons are the primary heat carriers in non-metallic solids. In compositionally heterogeneous materials, the thermal properties are believed to be mainly governed by the disrupted phonon transport due to mass disorder and strain fluctuations, while the effects of compositional fluctuation induced local phonon states are usually ignored. Here, by scanning transmission electron microscopy electron energy loss spectroscopy and sophisticated calculations, we identify the vibrational properties of ingredient-dependent interface phonon modes in AlxGa1-xN and quantify their various contributions to …

High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) are designed by mixing multiple metallic species in nearly the same amount to obtain crystalline or amorphous materials with exceptional mechanical properties. Here we use molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the role of positional and compositional disorder in determining the low-frequency vibrational properties of CrMnFeCoNi HEAs. Our results show that the expected dependence of the density of states on the frequency as $D(ω)\simω^4$ is recovered for amorphous HEAs and is also observed for partially crystallized alloys with deviations that depend on the de…
We present here an augmented space recursive technique in the k-representation which include diagonal, off-diagonal and the environmental disorder explicitly : an analytic, translationally invariant, multiple scattering theory for phonons in random binary alloys. We propose the augmented space recursion (ASR) as a computationally fast and accurate technique which will incorporate configuration fluctuations over a large local environment. We apply the formalism to $Ni_{55}Pd_{45}$, $Ni_{88}Cr_12}$ and $Ni_{50}Pt_{50}$ alloys which is not a random choice. Numerical results on spectral functions, …
A high-amplitude microwave magnetic field localized at the nanoscale is a desirable tool for various applications within the rapidly developing field of nanomagnetism. Here, we drive magnetization precession by coherent phonons in a metal ferromagnetic nanograting and generate ac-magnetic induction with extremely high amplitude (up to $10$ mT) and nanometer scale localization in the grating grooves. We trigger the magnetization by a laser pulse which excites localized surface acoustic waves. The developed technique has prospective uses in several areas of research and technology, including spa…
Atomic vibrations control all thermally activated processes in materials including diffusion, heat transport, phase transformations, and surface chemistry. Recent developments in monochromated, aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) have enabled nanoscale probing of vibrational modes using a focused electron beam. However, to date, no experimental atomic resolution vibrational spectroscopy has been reported. Here we demonstrate atomic resolution by exploiting localized impact excitations of vibrational modes in materials. We show that the impact signal yields hig…
Numerical studies of amorphous silicon show that the lowest 4% of vibrational modes are plane-wave like ("propagons") and the highest 3% of modes are localized ("locons"). The rest are neither plane-wave like nor localized. We call them "diffusons." Since diffusons are by far the most numerous, we try to characterize them by calculating such properties as wavevector and polarization (which seem not to be useful), "phase quotient" (a measure of the change of vibrational phase on between first neighbor atoms), spatial polarization memory, and diffusivity. Localized states are characterized by fi…
First principles calculations are used to investigate electronic band structure and vibrational spectra of pnictogen substituted ternary skutterudites. We compare the results with the prototypical binary composition CoSb$_3$ to identify the effects of substitutions on the Sb site, and evaluate the potential of ternary skutterudites for thermoelectric applications. Electronic transport coefficients are computed within the Boltzmann transport formalism assuming a constant relaxation time, using a new methodology based on maximally localized Wannier function interpolation. Our results point to a …
We perform two-dimensional coherent spectroscopy on CdSe/CdZnS core/shell colloidal quantum dots at cryogenic temperatures. In the two-dimensonal spectra, sidebands due to electronic coupling with CdSe lattice LO-phonon modes are observed that have evolutions deviating from the exponential dephasing expected from Markovian spectral diffusion. Comparison to simulations provides further evidence that the LO-phonon mode coupling itself significantly modifies the exciton lineshapes and results in the underlying spectral diffusion on ultrafast timescales.
We study the spectrum of vibrational modes in metal nanoparticles with a dielectric core. Vibrational modes are excited by the rapid heating of the particle lattice that takes place after laser excitation, and can be monitored by means of pump-probe spectroscopy as coherent oscillations of transient optical spectra. In nanoshells, the presence of two metal surfaces results in a substantially different energy spectrum of acoustic vibrations than for solid particles. We calculated the energy spectrum as well as the damping of nanoshell vibrational modes. The oscillator strength of fundamental br…
Vibrational modes in mechanical resonators provide a promising candidate to interface and manipulate classical and quantum information. The observation of coherent dynamics between distant mechanical resonators can be a key step towards scalable phonon-based applications. Here we report tunable coherent phonon dynamics with an architecture comprising three graphene mechanical resonators coupled in series, where all resonators can be manipulated by electrical signals on control gates. We demonstrate coherent Rabi oscillations between spatially separated resonators indirectly coupled via an inte…
In 1987-89 were synthesized soluble nano-composites of polyacetylene (NPA) with an abnormally high intensity of Raman scattering and high stability under laser radiation. Here we demonstrate that the key pre-condition to the outstanding characteristics of NPA is the vibrational and rotational mobility of nano-particles, provided by plasticized layers of water on their surface. The results afford a connection between optical properties of NPA and the three-dimensional coherent order arising from self-organization of nanoparticles at synthesis and during film formation. The driving force behind …
Coupling to phonon modes is a primary mechanism of excitonic dephasing and energy loss in semiconductors. However, low-energy phonons in colloidal quantum dots and their coupling to excitons are poorly understood, since their experimental signatures are weak and usually obscured by unavoidable inhomogeneous broadening of colloidal dot ensembles. We use multi-dimensional coherent spectroscopy at cryogenic temperatures to extract the homogeneous nonlinear optical response of excitons in a CdSe/CdZnS core/shell colloidal quantum dot ensemble. Comparison to simulation provides evidence that the ob…
Numerical studies of amorphous silicon in harmonic approximation show that the highest 3.5% of vibrational normal modes are localized. As vibrational frequency increases through the boundary separating localized from delocalized modes, near omega_c=70meV, (the "mobility edge") there is a localization-delocalization (LD) transition, similar to a second-order thermodynamic phase transition. By a numerical study on a system with 4096 atoms, we are able to see exponential decay lengths of exact vibrational eigenstates, and test whether or not these diverge at omega_c. Results are consistent with a…
In crystals, molecules thermally vibrate around the periodic lattice sites. Vibrational motions are well understood in terms of phonons, which carry heat and control heat transport. The situation is notably different in disordered solids, where vibrational excitations are not phonons and can be even localized. Recent numerical work has established the concept of elastic heterogeneity: disordered solids show inhomogeneous local mechanical response. Clearly, the heterogeneous nature of elastic properties strongly influences vibrational and thermal properties, and it is expected to be the origin …
