In topological bands, it is impossible to construct exponentially localized Wannier functions while preserving the symmetries. Instead, in quantum Hall systems, one can define an overcomplete basis of spatially localized coherent states. In this work, we propose a unified framework for understanding the quantum Hall effect and Chern insulators from the perspective of localized bases, by extending the overcomplete basis of coherent states to Chern bands in terms of coherent-like states. Specifically, by representing both coherent states and coherent-like states as wave packets defined on a band, the difference between them can be encoded solely in the functional form of the wave packet in momentum space. Furthermore, for filling factor $ν=1/3$, we define a local repulsive interaction Hamiltonian based on these bases and discuss properties of its ground states. In particular, by relating this Hamiltonian to previously studied models, we show that in quantum Hall systems it possesses exactly zero-energy ground states with topological degeneracy, thereby confirming that it serves as a model for fractional quantum Hall systems. In addition, we numerically verify that the Hamiltonian possesses topological degeneracy for representative Chern insulator models. An advantage of this formulation is that it allows fractional quantum Hall systems and various fractional Chern insulator systems to be discussed within a unified framework using the same Hamiltonian form. In addition, we discuss that coherent-like states can also be defined in $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulators. Corresponding to the fermionic time-reversal symmetry of the system, Kramers-degenerate coherent-like states can be naturally defined. The localized basis constructed from coherent-like states is expected to be useful for describing strongly correlated topological phases in flat-band systems.
We analyze the conductance of the quantum point contact containing large localized spin J. The additional plateau is formed on a ballistic conductance staircase if only one propagating channel is rendered conducting. The conductance value at this plateau is shown to depend strongly on J and decrease from 3e^2/2h to e^2/h when J increases from 1/2 to infinity, which is in a good agreement with the experimental observations [D.J. Reilly, et al, Phys. Rev. B 63, 121311 (2001)].
Moiré flatbands, occurring, e.g., in twisted bilayer graphene at magic angles, have attracted ample interest due to their high degree of experimental tunability and the intriguing possibility of generating novel strongly interacting phases. Here we consider the core problem of Coulomb interactions within fractionally filled spin and valley polarized Moiré flatbands and demonstrate that the dual description in terms of holes, which acquire a nontrivial hole dispersion, provides key physical intuition and enables the use of standard perturbative techniques for this strongly correlated problem. I…
It has been recently shown that non-Abelian defects with localized parafermion zero modes can arise in conventional Abelian fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states. Here we propose an alternate route to creating, manipulating, and measuring topologically protected degeneracies in bilayer FQH states coupled to superconductors, without the creation of localized parafermion zero modes. We focus mainly on electron-hole bilayers, with a $\pm 1/3$ Laughlin FQH state in each layer, with boundaries that are proximity-coupled to a superconductor. We show that the superconductor induces charge $2e/3$ quasi…

We study $N$-component interacting particles (hardcore bosons and fermions) loaded in topological lattice models with SU$(N)$-invariant interactions based on density matrix renormalization group method. By tuning the interplay of interspecies and intraspecies interactions, we demonstrate that a class of SU$(N)$ fractional quantum Hall states can emerge at fractional filling factors $ν=N/(N+1)$ for bosons ($ν=N/(2N+1)$ for fermions) in the lowest Chern band, characterized by the nontrivial fractional Hall responses and the fractional charge pumping. Moreover, we establish a topological characte…
We investigate the algebraic structure of flat energy bands a partial filling of which may give rise to a fractional quantum anomalous Hall effect (or a fractional Chern insulator) and a fractional quantum spin Hall effect. Both effects arise in the case of a sufficiently flat energy band as well as a roughly flat and homogeneous Berry curvature, such that the global Chern number, which is a topological invariant, may be associated with a local non-commutative geometry. This geometry is similar to the more familiar situation of the fractional quantum Hall effect in two-dimensional electron sys…
Using exact diagonalization in the spherical geometry, we investigate systems of localized quasiholes at nu=5/2 for interactions interpolating between the pure Coulomb and the three-body interaction for which the Moore-Read state is the exact ground state. We show that the charge e/4 quasihole can be easily localized by means of a delta-function pinning potential. Using a tuned smooth pinning potential, the quasihole radius can be limited to approximately three magnetic length units. For systems of two quasiholes, adiabatic continuity between the Moore-Read and the Coulomb limit holds for the …
We discuss flat-band surface states on the (111) surface in the tight-binding model with nearest-neighbor hopping on the diamond lattice, in analogy to the flat-band edge states in graphene with a zigzag edge. The bulk band is gapless, and the gap closes along a loop in the Brillouin zone. The verge of the flat-band surface states is identical with this gap-closing loop projected onto the surface plane. When anisotropies in the hopping integrals increase, the bulk gap-closing points move and the distribution of the flat-band states expands in the Brillouin zone. Then when the anisotropy is suf…
We study the many-body ground states of SU($N$) symmetric hardcore bosons on the topological flat-band model by using controlled numerical calculations. By introducing strong intracomponent and intercomponent interactions, we demonstrate that a hierarchy of bosonic SU($N$) fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states emerges at fractional filling factors $ν=N/(MN+1)$ (odd $M=3$). In order to characterize this series of FQH states, we figure the effective $\mathbf{K}$ matrix from the inverse of the Chern number matrix. The topological characterization of the $\mathbf{K}$ matrix also reveals quantized d…

Recent theoretical works have demonstrated various robust Abelian and non-Abelian fractional topological phases in lattice models with topological flat bands carrying Chern number C=1. Here we study hard-core bosons and interacting fermions in a three-band triangular-lattice model with the lowest topological flat band of Chern number C=2. We find convincing numerical evidence of bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect at the $ν=1/3$ filling characterized by three-fold quasi-degeneracy of ground states on a torus, a fractional Chern number for each ground state, a robust spectrum gap, and a gap …
We show the existence of the fractional topological phase (FTP) in a one-dimensional interacting fermion model using exact diagonalization, in which the non-interacting part has flatbands with nontrivial topology. In the presence of the nearest-neighbouring interaction $V_{1}$, the FTP at filling factor $ν=1/3$ appears. It is characterized by the three-fold degeneracy and the quantized total Berry phase of the ground-states. The FTP is destroyed by a next-nearest-neighbouring interaction $V_{2}$ and the phase diagrams in the $(V_{1},V_{2})$ plane is determined. We also present a physical pictu…
Recent proposals of topological flat band (TFB) models have provided a new route to realize the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) without Landau levels. We study hard-core bosons with short-range interactions in two representative TFB models, one of which is the well known Haldane model (but with different parameters). We demonstrate that FQHE states emerge with signatures of even number of quasi-degenerate ground states on a torus and a robust spectrum gap separating these states from higher energy spectrum. We also establish quantum phase diagrams for the filling factor 1/2 and illustrat…
We consider a topologically non-trivial flat band structure in one spatial dimension in the presence of nearest and next nearest neighbor Hubbard interaction. The non-interacting band structure is characterized by a symmetry protected topologically quantized Berry phase. At certain fractional fillings, a gapped phase with a filling-dependent ground state degeneracy, and fractionally charged quasi-particles emerges. At filling 1/3, the ground states carry a fractional Berry phase in the momentum basis. These features at first glance suggest a certain analogy to the fractional quantum Hall scena…
We perform an exact-diagonalization study of quasihole excitations for the two-component Halperin $(221)$ state in the lowest Landau level and for several $ν=1/3$ bosonic fractional Chern insulators in topological flat bands with Chern number $|C|=2$. Properties including the quasihole size, charge, and braiding statistics are evaluated. For the Halperin $(221)$ model state, we observe isotropic quasiholes with a clear internal structure, and obtain the quasihole charge and statistics matching the theoretical values. Interestingly, we also extract the same quasihole size, charge, and braiding …
We show that the flat bands in the chiral model of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene remain exactly flat in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. This is shown by an exact mapping between the model and the lowest Landau level wavefunctions at an effective magnetic field, in which the external field is either augmented or reduced by one flux quantum per unit cell. When the external field reaches one flux quantum per unit cell, the model exhibits a topological phase transition. These findings allow us to analyze a Jain-series of Fractional Chern Insulators states in the exactly flat…
A topological flatband, also known as drumhead states, is an ideal platform to drive new exotic topological quantum phases. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we reveal the emergence of a highly localized possible drumhead surface state in a topological semimetal BaAl4 and provide its full energy and momentum space topology. We find that the observed surface state is highly localized in momentum, inside a square-shaped bulk Dirac nodal loop, and in energy, leading to a flat band and a peak in the density of state. These results establish this class of materials as a p…
We perform an exact diagonalization study of the topological order in topological flat band models through calculating entanglement entropy and spectra of low energy states. We identify multiple independent minimal entangled states, which form a set of orthogonal basis states for the ground-state manifold. We extract the modular transformation matrices S (U) which contains the information of mutual (self) statistics, quantum dimensions and fusion rule of quasi-particles. Moreover, we demonstrate that these matrices are robust and universal in the whole topological phase against different pertu…
The integer quantum Hall state occurs when the Landau levels are fully occupied by the fermions, while the fractional quantum Hall state usually emerges when the Landau level is partially filled by the strongly correlated fermions or bosons. Here, we report two fractional Chern insulating states of the hard-core bosons in a multi-band lattice model hosting topological flat bands with high Chern number. The previously proposed $ν=1/3$ fractional Chern insulating state inherited from the high Chern number $C=2$ of the lowest topological flat band is revisited by the infinite density matrix renor…
We present a pedagogical review of the physics of fractional Chern insulators with a particular focus on the connection to the fractional quantum Hall effect. While the latter conventionally arises in semiconductor heterostructures at low temperatures and in high magnetic fields, interacting Chern insulators at fractional band filling may host phases with the same topological properties, but stabilized at the lattice scale, potentially leading to high-temperature topological order. We discuss the construction of topological flat band models, provide a survey of numerical results, and establish…
By numerical exact diagonalization techniques, we obtain the quantum phase diagram of the lattice fractional quantum Hall (FQH) systems in the presence of quenched disorder. By implementing an array of local potential traps representing the disorder, we show that the system undergoes a series of quantum phase transitions as the disorder and/or the interaction is tuned. As the strength of potential traps is increased, the FQH state turns into a compressible liquid, and then into a topologically trivial insulator. We use numerically calculated energy gap, quantum degeneracy, Chern number, entang…
The band structure of some translationally invariant lattice Hamiltonians contains strictly dispersionless flatbands(FB). These are induced by destructive interference, and typically host compact localized eigenstates (CLS) which occupy a finite number $U$ of unit cells. FBs are important due to macroscopic degeneracy and consequently due to their high sensitivity and strong response to different types of weak perturbations. We use a recently introduced classification of FB networks based on CLS properties, and extend the FB Hamiltonian generator introduced in Phys. Rev. B 95, 115135 (2017) to…
We present a simple prescription to flatten isolated Bloch bands with non-zero Chern number. We first show that approximate flattening of bands with non-zero Chern number is possible by tuning ratios of nearest-neighbor and next-nearest neighbor hoppings in the Haldane model and, similarly, in the chiral-pi-flux square lattice model. Then we show that perfect flattening can be attained with further range hoppings that decrease exponentially with distance. Finally, we add interactions to the model and present exact diagonalization results for a small system at 1/3 filling that support (i) the e…
We investigate an interaction-driven transition between crystalline and liquid states of strongly correlated spinless fermions within topological flat bands at low density (with filling factors $ν=1/5$, $1/7$, $1/9$). Using exact diagonalization for finite size systems with periodic boundary conditions, we distinguish different phases, whose stability depends on the interaction range, controlled by the screening parameter of the Coulomb interaction. The crystalline phases are identified by a crystallization strength, calculated from the Fourier transforms of pair correlation density, while the…
We study the phase transitions of bosonic $ν=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect in different topological lattice models under the interplay of onsite periodic potential and Hubbard repulsion. Through exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods, we demonstrate that the many-body ground state undergoes a continuous phase transition between bosonic FQH liquid and a trivial (Mott) insulator induced by the periodic potential, characterized by the smooth crossover of energy and entanglement entropy. When the Hubbard repulsion decreases, we claim that this bosonic FQ…

Recently, two-dimensional band insulators with a topologically nontrivial (almost) flat band has been studied extensively, which can realize integer and fractional quantum Hall effect in a system without an orbital magnetic field. Realizing a topological flat band generally requires longer range hoppings in a lattice Hamiltonian. It is natural to ask what is the minimal hopping range required.% for a topological flat-band Hamiltonian. In this paper, we prove that the mean hopping range of the flat-band Hamiltonian with Chern number $C_1$ and total number of bands $N$ has a universal lower boun…
We establish a variational principle for properly mapping a fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state to a fractional Chern insulator (FCI). We find that the mapping has a gauge freedom which could generate a class of FCI ground state wave functions appropriate for different forms of interactions. Therefore, the gauge should be fixed by a variational principle that minimizes the interaction energy of the FCI model. For a soft and isotropic electron-electron interaction, the principle leads to a gauge coinciding with that for maximally localized \emph{two-dimensional} projected Wannier functions of a…

The flat plane condition is the union of two exact constraints in electronic structure theory: i) energetic piecewise linearity with fractional electron removal or addition and ii) invariant energetics with change in electron spin in a half filled orbital. Semi-local density functional theory (DFT) fails to recover the flat plane, exhibiting convex fractional charge errors (FCE) and concave fractional spin errors (FSE) that are related to delocalization and static correlation errors. We previously showed that DFT+U eliminates FCE but now demonstrate that, like other widely employed corrections…
In the presence of crystalline symmetries, certain topological insulators present a filling anomaly: a mismatch between the number of electrons in an energy band and the number of electrons required for charge neutrality. In this paper, we show that a filling anomaly can arise when corners are introduced in $C_n$-symmetric crystalline insulators with vanishing polarization, having as consequence the existence of corner-localized charges quantized in multiples of $\frac{e}{n}$. We characterize the existence of this charge systematically and build topological indices that relate the symmetry rep…

We discuss the low-energy limit of three-orbital Kondo-lattice and Hubbard models describing $t_{2g}$ orbitals on a triangular lattice near half-filling. We analyze how very flat bands with non-trivial topological character, a Chern number C=1, arise both in the limit of infinite on-site interactions as well as in more realistic regimes. Exact diagonalization is then used to investigate fractional filling of an effective one-band spinless-fermion model including nearest-neighbor interaction $V$; it reveals signatures of fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) for several filling fractions. In addit…
We show that a suitable combination of geometric frustration, ferromagnetism and spin-orbit interactions can give rise to nearly flat bands with a large bandgap and non-zero Chern number. Partial filling of the flat band can give rise to fractional quantum Hall states at high temperatures (maybe even room temperature). While the identification of material candidates with suitable parameters remains open, our work indicates intriguing directions for exploration and synthesis.
We propose a platform for flat Chern band by subjecting two-dimensional Dirac materials -- such as graphene and topological insulator thin films -- to a periodic magnetic field, which can be created by the vortex lattice of a type-II superconductor. As a generalization of the $n=0$ Landau level, the flat band of Dirac fermion under a nonuniform magnetic field remains at zero energy, exactly dispersionless and topologically protected, while its local density of states is spatially modulated due to the magnetic field variation. In the presence of short-range repulsion, we find fractional Chern i…
We study the toplogical checkerboard lattice model around the $ν=\frac{1}{3}$ fractional quantum Hall phase using numerical exact diagonalization without Landau level projections. We add local perturbations, modified hoppings and on-site potentials, and observe phase transitions from the fractional quantum Hall phase to metallic and insulating phases when the strength and number of impurities is increased. In addition to evaluating the energy spectrum, we identify the phase diagrams by computing the topological Chern number of the many-body ground state manifold, and we show how the ground sta…
Electrons in two dimensions and strong magnetic fields effectively lose their kinetic energy and display exotic behavior dominated by Coulomb forces. When the ratio of electrons to magnetic flux quanta in the system is near 5/2, the unique correlated phase that emerges is predicted to be gapped with fractionally charged quasiparticles and a ground state degeneracy that grows exponentially as these quasiparticles are introduced. Interestingly, the only way to transform between the many ground states would be to braid the fractional excitations around each other, a property with applications in …
