Graphene oxide (GO) is an important intermediate to prepare graphene and it is also a versatile material with various applications. However, despite its importance, the detailed structure of GO is still unclear. For example, previous theoretical studies based on energetics have suggested that hydroxyl chain is an important structural motif of GO, which, however, is found to be contrary to nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment. In this study, we check both thermodynamic and kinetic aspects missed previously. First principles thermodynamics gives a free energy based stability ordering similar to that based on energetics, and hydroxyl chain is thus thermodynamically still favorable. At the same time, by checking the calculated vibrational frequencies, we note that hydroxyl chain structure is also inconsistent with infrared experiment. Therefore, kinetics during GO synthesis is expected to make an important role in GO structure. Transition state calculations predict large energy barriers between local minima, which suggests that experimentally obtained GO has a kinetically constrained structure.
In this report we present the temperature evolution of magnetic coercivity of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO). We report an anamolous decrease in coercivity of GO and RGO with decreasing temperature. We could explain this anamolous behavior invoking the inherent presence of ripple in graphene. We observe antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature for GO and RGO respectively, but at low temperatures both shows paramagnetic behavior.
Applying to graphene oxides, molecular theory of graphene is based on the oxide molecular origin when it is considered as a final product in the succession of a graphene molecule polyderivatives related to a particular oxidation reaction. The graphene oxide structure is created in due course of calculations following the algorithms that take into account the graphene molecules natural radicalization, correlation of odd electrons, an extremely strong influence of structure on properties, a sharp response of the molecule behavior on small action of external factors. Taking together, the theory f…
Here, the possibility of the existence of nitro-graphene derivatives with undisturbed graphene backbone is considered. Based on the first-principles calculation, it is shown that while NO$_2$ is unable to form a covalent bond with bare graphene, it becomes possible in some structures of graphane, fluorographene, and graphene oxide. This paper presents, among others, an analysis of the surrounding influence on the C-NO$_2$ bond strength. The author believes, that potential prospects of these materials and discussion about possible synthesizing routes may help further research on graphene-based …
Graphene Oxide and reduced Graphene Oxide are intriguing materials for photonics and electronic devices both for intrinsic characteristics and as precursors for the synthesis of graphene. Whatever the application and the engineering purpose, a fine control of the chemical and physical properties is required since the performances of graphene based systems depend on the reduction state of Graphene Oxide and can be strongly affected by interfaces interactions and neighboring effects. Then, a method for a local control of electric, electronic and chemical properties is required. The synergic appl…
Graphene can collect energy from the ambient heat and convert it to electricity, which makes it an ideal candidate for the fabrication of self-powered devices. However, this technology is suffering the high cost, which limits the practical use of it. In this work, we demonstrated that the cost can be reduced by using low cost reduced graphene oxide (RGO), graphite electrodes and low cost glass substrates. The results showed that this technology can be of practical value for the "battery" industry.
Graphene oxide continues to amaze scientific community for multiple potentials in a broad span of applications such as catalysts, adsorbents, oxidants, etc., determined by constant unveiling of its fantastic natures. Of them, magnetism is not ultimately identified and directly observed by naked eyes. Herein, we report graphene oxide directionally migrated and deposited together simply under external magnetic field from common Nd-Fe-B magnet, whereas the ferromagnetism of graphene oxide did not exhibit that strong as iron. Therefore, we illustrated this interesting pathway to keep close to such…
Based on first principles density functional theory calculations we explore the energetics of the conversion of carbon mono and dioxide to methane over graphene oxide surfaces. Similar to the recently discovered hydration of various organic species over this catalyst, the transfer of hydrogen atoms from hydroxyl groups of graphene oxide provide a step by step transformation hydrogenation of carbon oxides. Estimated yields of modeled reactions at room temperature are about 0.01% for the carbon mono and dioxide. For the modeling of graphene oxide/metal oxide composites, calculations in the prese…
Environmental contamination and human exposure to dyes have dramatically increased over the past decades because of their increasing use in such industries as textiles, paper, plastics, tannery and paints. These dyes can cause deterioration in water quality by imparting color to the water and inducing the photosynthetic activity of aquatic organisms by hindering light penetration. Moreover, some of the dyes are considered carcinogenic and mutagenic for human health. Therefore, efficient treatment and removal of dyes from wastewater have attracted considerable attention in recent years. Photoca…
We investigate Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) of metal oxide on pristine and functionalized graphene. On pristine graphene, ALD coating can only actively grow on edges and defect sites, where dangling bonds or surface groups react with ALD precursors. This affords a simple method to decorate and probe single defect sites in graphene planes. We used perylene tetracarboxylic acid (PTCA) to functionalize graphene surface and selectively introduced densely packed surface groups on graphene. Uniform ultrathin ALD coating on PTCA graphene was achieved over large area. The functionalization method cou…
Graphene oxide (GO) is regarded as one typical two-dimension structured oxygenated planar molecular material. Researchers across multiple disciplines have paid enormous attention to it due to unique physiochemical properties. However, models used to describe the structure of GO are still in argument and ongoing to update. Currently, synthesis methods for massive production are seemingly abundant but in fact, dominated by few thought systems. We herein aim to give a mini but critical review over the synthesis of graphene oxide as well as its structure, involving relative peer work.
In this study, we report a different strategy to prepare graphene nanopapers from direct vacuum filtration. Instead of the conventional method, i.e. thermal annealing nanopapers at extremely high temperatures prepared from graphene oxide (GO) or partially reduced GO, we fabricate our graphene nanopapers directly from suspensions of fully reduced graphene oxide (RGO), obtained after RGO and thermally annealing at 1700 °C in vacuum. By using this approach, we studied the effect of thermal annealing on the physical properties of the macroscopic graphene-based papers. Indeed, we demonstrated that …
Methane, the primary constituent of natural gas, binds too weakly to nanostructured carbons to meet the targets set for on-board vehicular storage to be viable. We show, using density functional theory calculations, that replacing graphene by graphene oxide increases the adsorption energy of methane by 50%. This enhancement is sufficient to achieve the optimal binding strength. In order to gain insight into the sources of this increased binding, that could also be used to formulate design principles for novel storage materials, we consider a sequence of model systems, that progressively take u…
Molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) attracts attention as a high efficient and low cost photocatalyst for hydrogen production, but suffers from low conductance and high recombination rate of photo-generated charge carriers. In this work, we investigate the MoS$_2$ heterostructures with graphene variants (GVs), including graphene, graphene oxide, and their boron- and nitrogen-doped variants, by using first-principles calculations. Systematic comparison between graphene and graphene oxide composites is performed, and contrary effect of B and N doping on interface function and hydrogen evolution is cl…
Reduced graphene oxide becomes one of the most popular materials for applications in various optical, electronic and sensor devices. Even though many methods have been already reported for reduced graphene oxide synthesis, they usually rise issues related to their efficiency, quality and environmental impact. This work demonstrates a simple, environmentally friendly and effective method for reducing graphene oxide under ambient conditions using nanosecond infrared laser irradiation. As a result, a Raman band intensity ratio of I(G)/I(D) of 4.59 was achieved with an average crystallite size of …
Transport properties of progressively reduced graphene oxide (GO) are described. Evolution of the electronic properties reveals that as-synthesized GO undergoes insulator-semiconductor-semi-metal transitions with reduction. The apparent transport gap ranges from 10 ~ 50 meV and approaches zero with extensive reduction. Measurements at varying degrees of reduction reveal that transport in reduced GO occurs via variable-range hopping and further reduction leads to increased number of available hopping sites.
The application of solution-processable graphene oxide (GO) as hole injection layer in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is demonstrated. High luminance of over 53,000 cd m-2 is obtained at only 10 V. The results will unlock a route of applying GO in flexible OLEDs and other electrode applications.
We study the effects of insulating oxides in their crystalline forms on the energy band structure of monolayer and bilayer graphene using a \textit{first principles} density functional theory based electronic structure method and a local density approximation. We consider the dielectric oxides, SiO$_{2}$ ($α$-quartz) and Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ (alumina or $α$-sapphire) each with two surface terminations. Our study suggests that atomic relaxations and resulting equilibrium separations play a critical role in perturbing the linear band structure of graphene in contrast to the less critical role played …
We studied the electronic and the structural properties of amino acids (alanine, glycine, and histidine) attached to graphene oxide (GO) by peptide bonding, via plane wave pseudopotential total-energy calculations within the local spin density approximation (LSDA). The HOMO-LUMO gap, the Hirshfeld charges, and the equilibrium geometrical structures exhibit keen variations depending on the species of the attached amino acid. The GO-amino acid system appears to be a good candidate as a biosensor.
The integration of two-dimensional (2D) materials with functional non-2D materials such as metal oxides is of key importance for many applications, but underlying mechanisms for such non-2D/2D interfacing remain largely elusive at the atomic scale. To address this, we here investigate the nucleation stage in atomic layer deposition (ALD) of the important metal oxide HfO2 on chemical vapor deposited graphene using atomically resolved and element specific scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). To avoid any deleterious influence of polymer residues from pre-ALD graphene transfers we em…
Graphene oxide is a rising star among 2D materials, yet its interaction with liquid water remains a fundamentally open question: experimental characterization at the atomic scale is difficult, and modelling by classical approaches cannot properly describe chemical reactivity. Here, we bridge the gap between simple computational models and complex experimental systems, by realistic first-principles molecular simulations of graphene oxide (GO) in liquid water. We construct chemically accurate GO models and study their behavior in water, showing that oxygen-bearing functional groups (hydroxyl and…
We have investigated the effect of ambient gas pressure (Argon) used during thermal exfoliation of graphite oxide on the number of graphene sheets in the resulting graphene. The ambience gas Ar pressures used are 80, 25, 1 atmosphere and 10-3 as well as 10-5 torr. We have found curious result that the number of graphene sheets in exfoliated graphene stack is dependent on the applied pressure for exfoliation of graphite oxide (GO). By lowering the exfoliation pressure, the numbers of sheets get reduced. The numbers of sheets in exfoliated graphene stack have been determined by Lorentzian fit of…
In a deviation from the conventional Hummers method, a spontaneous expansion approach was introduced with expanded graphite as the precursors. The intercalating agent (H2SO4) was able to penetrate into the expanded graphite; this had further expanded the graphite and as a result, a foam-like intermediate was produced. The foam-like graphite was more easily oxidized in reaction with the oxidant (KMnO4) to form graphene oxide (GO). Fully exfoliated GO was obtained with expanded graphite having the median diameter ~ 15 μm as the precursors. This procedure was much safer and productive in scalable…
In this paper we report: the use of GO in aqueous solution as a gate dielectric material, its application to a MOS transistor based on organic semiconductor and the use of paper as substrate material.
Chemical oxidation of multilayer graphene grown on silicon carbide yields films exhibiting reproducible characteristics, lateral uniformity, smoothness over large areas, and manageable chemical complexity, thereby opening opportunities to accelerate both fundamental understanding and technological applications of this form of graphene oxide films. Here, we investigate the vertical inter-layer structure of these ultra-thin oxide films. X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy, and IR experiments show that the multilayer films exhibit excellent inter-layer registry, little amount (<10%) of int…
Among the recent achievements of sodium-ion battery (SIB) electrode materials, hybridization of two-dimentional (2D) materials is one of the most interesting appointments. In this work, we propose to use the 2D hybrid composites of SnS2 with graphene or graphene oxide (GO) layers as SIB anode, based on the first-principles calculations of their atomic structures, sodium intercalation energetics and electronic properties. The calculations reveal that graphene or GO film can effectively support not only the stable formation of hetero-interface with the SnS2 layer but also the easy intercalation …
Environmentally-benign high-performance graphene oxide (GO)/alginate-based absorbents were prepared to eliminate acridine orange selected as a typical dye. Characterizations demonstrated GO well encapsulated and its promotion of pore formation on structure. Kinetic studies exhibited that the addition of GO shortened the adsorption equilibrium time, raised the initial rate and the adsorption capacity. Isotherm studies indicated the adsorptive behavior followed Langmuir type, and higher maximum capacity was obtained in the presence of GO. The adsorption positively responded to pH increased from …
Thermoplastic elastomeric nanocomposites based on poly(trimethylene terephthalate-block-poly(tetramethylene oxide) copolymer (PTT-PTMO) and graphene oxide-Fe3O4 nanoparticle hybrid were prepared by in situ polymerization. Superparamagnetic GO-Fe3O4 hybrid nanoparticles before introducing to elastomeric matrix were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of loading (0.3 and 0.5 wt%) of GO-Fe3O4 nanoparticle hybrid on the phase structure, tensile and magnetic properties o…
The ring opening polymerization of cyclic butylene terephthalate into poly (butylene terephthalate) (pCBT) in the presence of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) is an effective method for the preparation of polymer nanocomposites. The inclusion of RGO nanoflakes dramatically affects the crystallization of pCBT, shifting crystallization peak temperature to higher temperatures and, overall, increasing the crystallization rate. This was due to a super nucleating effect caused by RGO, which is maximized by highly reduced graphene oxide. Furthermore, combined analyses by differential scanning calorimetry…
Despite the recent developments in Graphene Oxide due to its importance as a host precursor of Graphene, the detailed electronic structure and its evolution during the thermal reduction remain largely unknown, hindering its potential applications. We show that a combination of high resolution in situ X-ray photoemission and X-ray absorption spectroscopies offer a powerful approach to monitor the deoxygenation process and comprehensively evaluate the electronic structure of Graphene Oxide thin films at different stages of the thermal reduction process. It is established that the edge plane carb…
Adsorption is one important way applied to water decontamination, where carbon is commonly used as highly effective absorbent. Carbon of different morphologies and structures normally demonstrate distinct capabilities to adsorption-typed decontaminations. Graphene oxide is regarded as the oxidative derivative of graphene, maintaining its 2D morphology-featuring structure while location-dependently immobilized with a large amount of various oxygen-involving functional moieties on both sides. Free-standing graphene oxide tends to fully unfold in water and behave in macromolecular-like Brownian m…

A study of solubility parameters showed that the exfoliation was optimum in DMF followed by isopropanol and diethylene glycol. Isopropanol was the solvent of choice due to its environmentally friendly nature and ease of use for further processing. The 2D hybrid was synthesized in isopropanol suspensions with concentrations of up to 0.5 mg/ml and demonstrated stability against reaggregation for up to six months. The coexfoliation was found …
Graphene and MoS2 are two well-known quasi two-dimensional materials. This review is a comparative survey of the complementary lattice dynamical and mechanical properties of graphene and MoS2. This comparison facilitates the study of graphene/MoS2 heterostructures, which is expected to mitigate the negative properties of each individual constituent.
Barrier films preventing permeation of gases and moistures are important for many industries ranging from food to medical and from chemical to electronic. From this perspective, graphene has recently attracted particular interest because its defect free monolayers are impermeable to all gases and liquids. However, it has proved challenging to develop large-area defectless graphene films suitable for industrial use. Here we report barrier properties of multilayer graphitic films made by chemical reduction of easily and cheaply produced graphene oxide laminates. They are found to provide a pract…
Two-dimensional graphene offers interesting electronic, thermal and mechanical properties that are currently explored for advanced electronics, membranes and composites. Here we synthesize and explore the biological application of nano-graphene oxide NGO, single-layer graphene oxide sheets down to a few nanometers in lateral width. We develop functionalization chemistry to impart solubility and compatibility of NGO in biological environments. We obtain size separated pegylated NGO sheets that are soluble in buffers and serum without agglomeration. The NGO sheets are found to be photoluminescen…
Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS) measurements of Pοlyaniline/Graphene oxide composites were conducted for an as-prepared and a thermally annealed specimen, respectively, from 15K to room temperature. Electrical conductivity values of the annealed composite display a very modest rise denoting the important contributions of the GO component to achieving electrical stability of the polymer. Patterns of the dc conductivity as a function of temperature also reveal a metal to insulator transition around 75K. The transition is dominated by two key factors; temperature and annealing process. Me…
Graphene oxide (GO) is one of chemically modified graphenes and has been extensively studied worldwide. A monolayer sheet of GO which is chemically produced in solution can be deposited on various substrates. We have proved that use of graphite powder with a large grain size enables preparation of a single layer GO film that is larger than 100 micrometers easily and reproducibly. If it is possible to reduce the GO film completely, one can obtain graphene without mechanical exfoliation. However, the reduction methods employed so far have been insufficient to remove oxygen or to restore the long…
The author reports an experimental study of electrical and thermal transport in reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/polystyrene (PS) composites. The electrical conductivity ($σ$) of RGO/PS composites with different RGO concentrations at room temperature shows a percolation behavior with the percolation threshold of ~ 0.25 vol.%. Their temperature-dependent electrical conductivity follows Efros-Shklovskii (ES) variable range hopping (VRH) conduction in the temperature range of 30 to 300 K. The thermal conductivity ($κ$) of composites is enhanced by ~ 90 % as the concentration is increased from 0 to 10…
Graphene oxide (GO) flakes have been deposited to bridge the gap between two epitaxial graphene electrodes to produce all-graphene devices. Electrical measurements indicate the presence of Schottky barriers (SB) at the graphene/graphene oxide junctions, as a consequence of the band-gap in GO. The barrier height is found to be about 0.7 eV, and is reduced after annealing at 180 $^\circ$C, implying that the gap can be tuned by changing the degree of oxidation. A lower limit of the GO mobility was found to be 850 cm$^2$/Vs, rivaling silicon. {\it In situ} local oxidation of patterned epitaxial gr…
We investigate nanoscale local anodic oxidation (LAO) on hydrogen-intercalated graphene grown by controlled sublimation of silicon carbide (SiC). Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) was used as a lithographic and characterization tool in order to investigate the local properties of the nanofabricated structures. The anomalous thickness observed after the graphene oxidation process is linked to the impact of LAO on the substrate. Micro-Raman spectroscopy was employed to demonstrate the presence of two oxidation regimes depending on the applied bias. We show that partial and total etching of monolay…
Graphene oxide (GO) holds significant promise for electronic devices and nanocomposite materials. A number of models were proposed for GO structure, combining carboxyl, hydroxyl, carbonyl and epoxide groups at different locations. The complexity and variety of GO isomers, whose thermodynamic stability and formation kinetics depend on applied conditions, make determination of GO structure with atomistic precision challenging. We report high level theoretical investigation of multiple molecular configurations, which are anticipated in GO. We conclude that all oxygen containing groups at the GO s…
Growth of perovskite oxide thin films on Si in crystalline form has long been a critical obstacle for the integration of multifunctional oxides into Si-based technologies. In this study, we propose pulsed laser deposition of a crystalline SrTiO3 thin film on a Si using graphene substrate. The SrTiO3 thin film on graphene has a highly (00l)-oriented crystalline structure which results from the partial epitaxy. Moreover, graphene promotes a sharp interface by highly suppressing the chemical intermixing. The important role of graphene as a 2D substrate and diffusion barrier allows expansion of de…
We study local electronic properties of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) on metallic (Pt) and insulating (Si3N4) substrates in controlled humidity environment. We demonstrate that the supporting substrate plays a crucial role in interaction of these materials with water, with Pt making both GO and RGO insensitive to humidity variations and change in environment. On the other hand, in the case of Si3N4 substrate a significant difference between GO and RGO with respect to humidity variations is demonstrated, indicating complete water coverage at ~60% R.H for RGO and ~30% R.H.…
Hydration properties of graphene oxide (GO) are essential for most of its potential applications. In this work, we employ atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to investigate seven GO compositions with different levels of oxygenation. Two atomic charge models for GO are compared: (1) sp2 carbons are purely Lennard-Jones sites; (2) sp2 carbon charges are consistent with the CHELPG scheme. Structural properties were found to depend insignificantly on the charge model, whereas thermodynamics appeared very sensitive. In particular, the simplified model provides systematically stronger GO/water …
In this work we demonstrate comprehensive studies on graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) based saturable absorbers (SA) for mode-locking of Er-doped fiber lasers. The paper describes the fabrication process of both saturable absorbers and detailed comparison of their parameters. Our results show, that there is no significant difference in the laser performance between the investigated SA. Both provided stable, mode-locked operation with sub-400 fs soliton pulses and more than 9 nm optical bandwidth at 1560 nm center wavelength. It has been shown that GO might be successfully u…
First-principles calculations of the mayenite-based oxide, [Ca12Al14O32]{2+}(2e-), reveal the mechanism responsible for its high conductivity. A detailed comparison of the electronic and optical properties of this material with those of the recently discovered novel transparent conducting oxide, H-doped UV-activated Ca12Al14O33, allowed us to conclude that the enhanced conductivity in [Ca12Al14O32]{2+}(2e-) is achieved by elimination of the Coulomb blocade of the charge carriers. This results in a transition from variable range hopping behavior with a Coulomb gap in H-doped UV-irradiated Ca12A…
Through direct nanoparticle nucleation and growth on nitrogen doped, reduced graphene oxide sheets and cation substitution of spinel Co3O4 nanoparticles, a manganese-cobalt spinel MnCo2O4/graphene hybrid was developed as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline conditions. Electrochemical and X-ray near edge structure (XANES) investigations revealed that the nucleation and growth method for forming inorganic-nanocarbon hybrid results in covalent coupling between spinel oxide nanoparticles and N-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rmGO) sheets. Carbon K-edg…
The reduction of graphene oxide is one of the most facile methods to fabricate a large amount of graphene and the reduction rate of graphene oxide is related with the quality of synthesized graphene for its possible application. The reduction rate is usually determined by using various spectroscopy measurements such as Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Here we propose that the magnetic data can be used as a means of determining the quality of graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) by the investigation of close relat…
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been widely used in the graphene oxide (GO) structure study. However, the detailed relationship between its spectroscopic features and the GO structural configuration has remained elusive. Based on first principles $^{13}$C chemical shift calculations using the gauge including projector augmented waves (GIPAW) method, we provide a spectrum-structure connection. Chemical shift of carbon is found to be very sensitive to atomic environment, even with an identical oxidation group. Factors determining the chemical shifts for epoxy and hydroxy groups have been di…
Graphene oxide membranes show exceptional molecular permeation properties, with a promise for many applications. However, their use in ion sieving and desalination technologies is limited by a permeation cutoff of ~9 Angstrom, which is larger than hydrated ion diameters for common salts. The cutoff is determined by the interlayer spacing d ~13.5 Angstrom, typical for graphene oxide laminates that swell in water. Achieving smaller d for the laminates immersed in water has proved to be a challenge. Here we describe how to control d by physical confinement and achieve accurate and tuneable ion sie…

We demonstrate the atomic layer deposition of high-quality HfO2 film on graphene and report the magnitude of remote oxide phonon (ROP) scattering in dual-oxide graphene transistors. Top gates with 30 nm HfO2 oxide layer exhibit excellent doping capacity of greater than 1.5x10^(13)/cm^(2). The carrier mobility in HfO2-covered graphene reaches 20,000 cm^(2)/Vs at low temperature, which is the highest among oxide-covered graphene and compares to that of pristine samples. The temperature-dependent resistivity exhibits the effect of ROP scattering from both the SiO2 substrate and the HfO2 over-laye…
Fluorescent organic compounds are of significant importance to the development of low-cost opto-electronic devices. Blue fluorescence from aromatic or olefinic molecules and their derivatives is particularly important for display and lighting applications. Thin film deposition of low-molecular-weight fluorescent organic compounds typically requires costly vacuum evaporation systems. On the other hand, solution-processable polymeric counterparts generally luminesce at longer wavelengths due to larger delocalization in the chain. Blue light emission from solution-processed materials is therefore…
Cubic spinel lithium manganese oxide (LiMn2O4) has been able to attract a great deal of attention over the years as a promising cathode material for large scale lithium ion batteries. Here a facile hydrothermal route followed by solid state reaction is developed using as grown ultrafine alpha-MnO2 nanorods to prepare one dimensional LiMn2O4 with 10-50nm diameters. To enhance the cathodic property of these nanorods, a unique synthesis technique of heat treatment is developed to grow 2D graphene oxide sheet enveloping 1D LiMn2O4 as interconnected framework. This nanocomposite 3D porous cathode e…
Graphene-based membranes have been investigated as promising candidates for water filtration and gas separation applications. Experimental evidences have shown that graphene oxide can be impermeable to liquids, vapors and gases, while allowing a fast permeation of water molecules. This phenomenon has been attributed to the formation of a network of nano capillaries that allow nearly frictionless water flow while blocking other molecules by steric hindrance effects. It is supposed that water molecules are transported through the percolated two-dimensional channels formed between graphene-based …
Large variety of structure and chemical-composition of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) is explained from a quantum-chemical standpoint. The related molecular theory of graphene oxide, supported by large experience gained by the modern graphene science, has led the foundation of the concept of a multi-stage graphene oxide reduction. This microscopic approach has found a definite confirmation when analyzing the available empirical data concerning both synthetic and natural RGO products, the latter in view of shungite carbon, suggesting the atomic-microscopic model for its structure.
We demonstrate a bottom-up synthesis of structures similar to graphene oxide via a two dimensional polymerization. Experimental evidence and discussion are conveyed as well as a general framework for this two dimensional polymerization. The proposed morphologies and lattice structures of these graphene oxides are derived from aldol condensation of alternating three nucleophilic and three electrophilic centers of benzenetriol.
