We study additive double character sums over two subsets of a finite field. We show that if there is a suitable rational self-map of small degree of a set $D$, then this set contains a large subset $U$ for which the standard bound on the absolute value of the character sum over $U$ and any subset $C$ (which satisfies some restrictions on its size $|C|$) can be improved. Examples of such suitable self-maps are inversion and squaring. Then we apply this new bound to trace products and sum-product equations and improve results of the first author and of Gyarmati and Sárközy.
We give a congruence for L-functions coming from affine additive exponential sums over a finite field. Precisely, we give a congruence for certain operators coming from Dwork's theory. This congruence is very similar to the congruence of Manin for the characteristic polynomial of the action of Frobenius on the Jacobian of a curve defined over a finite field.
We establish asymptotic formulae for various correlations involving general divisor functions $d_k(n)$ and partial divisor functions $d_l(n,A)=\sum_{q|n:q\leq n^A}d_{l-1}(q)$, where $A\in[0,1]$ is a parameter and $k,l\in\mathbb{N}$ are fixed. Our results relate the parameter $A$ to the lengths of arithmetic progressions in which $d_k(n)$ is uniformly distributed. As applications to additive divisor sums, we establish new lower bounds and a new equivalent condition for the conjectured asymptotic. We also prove a Tauberian theorem for general additive divisor sums.
Let $f$ be a multiplicative function which satisfies \[ f(a^2+b^2+c^2+d^2) = f(a^2+b^2)+f(c^2+d^2) \] for positive integers $a$, $b$, $c$, and $d$. We show that $f$ is the identity function provided that $f(3)\,f(11) \ne 0$. Otherwise, $f(n)=0$ for all $n \ge 2$ except for $n=3,9,11$.
In the paper we obtain new estimates for binary and ternary sums of multiplicative characters with additive convolutions of characteristic functions of sets, having small additive doubling. In particular, we improve a result of M.-C. Chang. The proof uses Croot-Sisask almost periodicity lemma.
We obtain a nontrivial bound on the number of solutions to the equation $A^{x_1} + A^{x_2} = A^{x_3} + A^{x_4}$, $1 \le x_1,x_2,x_3,x_4 \le τ$, with a fixed $n\times n$ matrix $A$ over a finite field ${\mathbb F}_q$ of $q$ elements of multiplicative order $τ$. For $n=2$ this equation has been considered by Kurlberg and Rudnick (2001) in their study of quantum ergodicity for linear maps over ${\mathbb F}_q$. Furthermore, its multivariate analogue (also with $n=2$) has been studied by Bourgain (2005). We give applications of our result to obtaining a new bound of additive character sums with a m…
We generalize Burgess' results on partial Gaussian sums to arbitrary finite fields. The main ingredients are the classical method of amplification, two deep results on multiplicative energy for subsets in finite fields which are obtained respectively by the tools from additive combinatorics and geometry of numbers, and a technique of Chamizo for treating the difficulty caused by additive character. Our results include the recent works on character sums in finite fields by M.-C. Chang and S. V. Konyagin.
The celebrated Erdős--Kac theorem says, roughly speaking, that the values of additive functions satisfying certain mild hypotheses are normally distributed. In the intervening years, similar normal distribution laws have been shown to hold for certain non-additive functions and for amenable arithmetic functions over certain subsets of the natural numbers. Continuing in this vein, we show that if $g_1(n), \ldots, g_k(n)$ is a collection of functions satisfying certain mild hypotheses for which an Erdős--Kac-type normal distribution law holds, and if $Q(x_1, \ldots, x_k)$ is a polynomial with no…
In a 1916 paper, Ramanujan studied the additive convolution $S_{a, b}(n)$ of sum-of-divisors functions $σ_a(n)$ and $σ_b(n)$, and proved an asymptotic formula for it when $a$ and $b$ are positive odd integers. He also conjectured that his asymptotic formula should hold for all positive real $a$ and $b$. Ramanujan's conjecture was subsequently proved by Ingham, and then by Halberstam with a power saving error term. In this paper, we give a new proof of Ramanujan's conjecture that obtains lower order terms in the asymptotics for most ranges of the parameters. We also describe a connection to a c…
Hardy and Littlewood initiated the study of the $2k$-th moments of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line. In 1918 Hardy and Littlewood established an asymptotic formula for the second moment and in 1926 Ingham established an asymptotic formula for the fourth moment. Since then no other moments have been asymptotically evaluated. In this article we study the sixth moment of the zeta function on the critical line. We show that a conjectural formula for a certain family of ternary additive divisor sums implies an asymptotic formula with power savings error term for the sixth moment of th…
A set $\mathcal{A}$ is said to be an additive $h$-basis if each element in $\{0,1,\ldots,hn\}$ can be written as an $h$-sum of elements of $\mathcal{A}$ in {\it at least} one way. We seek multiple representations as $h$-sums, and, in this paper we make a start by restricting ourselves to $h=2$. We say that $\mathcal{A}$ is said to be a truncated $(α,2,g)$ additive basis if each $j\in[αn, (2-α)n]$ can be represented as a $2$-sum of elements of $\mathcal{A}$ in at least $g$ ways. In this paper, we provide sharp asymptotics for the event that a randomly selected set is a truncated $(α,2,g)$ addit…
Let $h$ be a positive integer and let $\varepsilon > 0$. The Haight-Ruzsa method produces a positive integer $m^*$ and a subset $A$ of the additive abelian group $\mathbf{Z}/m^*\mathbf{Z}$ such that the difference set is large in the sense that $A-A = \mathbf{Z}/m^*\mathbf{Z}$ and $h$-fold sumset is small in the sense that $|hA| < \varepsilon m^*$. This note describes, and in a modest way extends, the Haight-Ruzsa argument, and constructs sets with more differences than multiple sums in other additive abelian groups.
Suppose that A is a subset of the integers {1,...,N} of density a. We provide a new proof of a result of Green which shows that A+A contains an arithmetic progression of length exp(ca(log N)^{1/2}) for some absolute c>0. Furthermore we improve the length of progression guaranteed in higher sumsets; for example we show that A+A+A contains a progression of length roughly N^{ca} improving on the previous best of N^{ca^{2+ε}}.
We obtain upper bounds for the fourth and higher moments of short exponential sums involving Fourier coefficients of holomorphic cusp forms twisted by rational additive twists with small denominators.
We establish bounds of triple exponential sums with mixed exponential and linear function. The method we use is by Shparlinski together with a bound of additive energy from Roche-Newton, Rudnev and Shkredov.
When defining the amount of additive structure on a set it is often convenient to consider certain sumsets; Calculating the cardinality of these sumsets can elucidate the set's underlying structure. We begin by investigating finite sets of perfect squares and associated sumsets. We reveal how arithmetic progressions efficiently reduce the cardinality of sumsets and provide estimates for the minimum size, taking advantage of the additive structure that arithmetic progressions provide. We then generalise the problem to arbitrary rings and achieve satisfactory estimates for the case of squares in…
We obtain new results on additive properties of the set $$ I^{-1}= \{x^{-1}: \quad x\in I\} $$ where $I$ is an arbitrary interval in the field of residue classes modulo a large prime $p$. We combine our results with multilinear exponential sum estimates and obtain new results on incomplete multilinear Kloosterman sums.
A sumset semigroup is a non-cancellative commutative monoid obtained from the sumset of finite non-negative integer sets. In this work, an algorithm for computing the ideals associated with some sumset semigroups is provided. Using these ideals, we study some factorization properties of sumset semigroups and some additive properties of sumsets. This approach links computational commutative algebra with additive number theory.
We bound double sums of Kloosterman sums over a finite field ${\mathbb F}_{q}$, with one or both parameters ranging over an affine space over its prime subfield ${\mathbb F}_p \subseteq {\mathbb F}_{q} $. These are finite fields analogues of a series of recent results by various authors in finite fields and residue rings. Our results are based on recent advances in additive combinatorics in arbitrary finite field.
We investigate sumset decompositions of quite general sets with restricted prime factors. We manage to handle certain sets, such as the smooth numbers, even though they have little sieve amenability, and conclude that these sets cannot be written as a ternary sumset. This proves a conjecture by Sárközy. We also clean up and sharpen existing results on sumset decompositions of the prime numbers.
We obtain new bounds on short Weil sums over small multiplicative subgroups of prime finite fields which remain nontrivial in the range the classical Weil bound is already trivial. The method we use is a blend of techniques coming from algebraic geometry and additive combinatorics.
We extend some methods of bounding exponential sums of the type $\displaystyle\sum_{n\le N}e^{2πiag^n/p}$ to deal with the case when $g$ is not necessarily a primitive root. We also show some recent results of Shkredov concerning additive properties of multiplicative subgroups imply new bounds for the sums under consideration.
Additive divisor sums play a prominent role in the theory of the moments of the Riemann zeta function. There is a long history of determining sharp asymptotic formula for the shifted convolution sum of the ordinary divisor function. In recent years, it has emerged that a sharp asymptotic formula for the shifted convolution sum of the triple divisor function would be useful in evaluating the sixth moment of the Riemann zeta function. In this article, we study $D_{k,\ell}(x) = \sum_{n \le x} τ_k(n) τ_{\ell}(n+h)$ where $τ_k$ and $τ_{\ell}$ are the $k$-th and $\ell$-th divisor functions. The main…
We improve a recent result of B. Hanson (2015) on multiplicative character sums with expressions of the type $a + b +cd$ and variables $a,b,c,d$ from four distinct sets of a finite field. We also consider similar sums with $a + b(c+d)$. These bounds rely on some recent advances in additive combinatorics.
In this paper we introduce the additive analogue of the index of a polynomial over finite fields. We study several problems in the theory of polynomials over finite fields in terms of their additive indices, such as value set sizes, bounds on multiplicative character sums, and characterizations of permutation polynomials.
We study the distribution of singular and unimodular matrices in sumsets in matrix rings over finite fields. We apply these results to estimate the largest prime divisor of the determinants in sumsets in matrix rings over the integers.
We obtain quantitative estimates for the asymptotic density of subsets of the two-dimensional integer lattice which contain only trivial solutions to an additive equation involving binary forms. In the process we develop an analogue of Vinogradov's mean value theorem applicable to binary forms.
We show that if a subset A of {1,...,N} does not contain any solutions to the equation x+y+z=3w with the variables not all equal, then A has size at most exp(-c(log N)^{1/7}) N, where c > 0 is some absolute constant. In view of Behrend's construction, this bound is of the right shape: the exponent 1/7 cannot be replaced by any constant larger than 1/2. We also establish a related result, which says that sumsets A+A+A contain long arithmetic progressions if A is a subset of {1,...,N}, or high-dimensional subspaces if A is a subset of a vector space over a finite field, even if A has density of …
We prove character sum estimates for additive Bohr subsets modulo a prime. These estimates are analogous to classical character sum bounds of Polya-Vinogradov and Burgess. These estimates are applied to obtain results on recurrence mod $p$ by special elements.
By considering even functions (mod $n$) we generalize a Menon-type identity by Li and Kim involving additive characters of the group ${\Bbb Z}_n$. We use a different approach, based on certain convolutional identities. Some other applications, including related formulas for Ramanujan sums, are discussed, as well.
In this survey paper we discuss some recent results and related open questions in additive combinatorics, in particular, questions about sumsets in finite abelian groups.
In the present paper, we generalize some of the results on Kloosterman sums proven in \cite{BG} for prime moduli to general moduli. This requires to establish the corresponding additive properties of the reciprocal set $$ I^{-1}=\{x^{-1}:\quad x\in I\}, $$ where $I$ is an interval in the ring of residue classes modulo a large positive integer. We apply our bounds on multilinear exponential sums to the Brun-Titchmarsh theorem and the estimate of very short Kloosterman sums, hence generalizing our earlier work to the setting of general modulus.
An MSTD set is a finite set of integers with more sums than differences. It is proved that, for infinitely many positive integers $k$, there are infinitely many affinely inequivalent MSTD sets of cardinality $k$. There are several related open problems.
In this note we prove a new estimate on so-called GCD sums (also called Gál sums), which, for certain coefficients, improves significantly over the general bound due to de la Bretèche and Tenenbaum. We use our estimate to prove new results on the equidistribution of sequences modulo 1, improving over a result of Aistleitner, Larcher, and Lewko on how the metric poissonian property relates to the notion of additive energy. In particular, we show that arbitrary subsets of the squares are metric poissonian.
A sum-and-distance system is a collection of finite sets of integers such that the sums and differences formed by taking one element from each set generate a prescribed arithmetic progression. Such systems, with two component sets, arise naturally in the study of matrices with symmetry properties and consecutive integer entries. Sum systems are an analogous concept where only sums of elements are considered. We establish a bijection between sum systems and sum-and-distance systems of corresponding size, and show that sum systems are equivalent to principal reversible cuboids, which are tensors…
