We give an example of a bounded divergence free autonomous vector field in $\mathbb R^3$ (and of a nonautonomous bounded divergence free vector field in $\mathbb R^2$) and of a bounded initial data for which the Cauchy problem for the corresponding transport equation has $2$ distinct solutions. We then show that both solutions are limits of classical solutions of transport equations for appropriate smoothings of the vector fields and of the initial data.
We study a semilinear parabolic equation that possesses global bounded weak solutions whose gradient has a singularity in the interior of the domain for all $t>0$. The singularity of these solutions is of the same type as the singularity of a stationary solution to which they converge as $t\to\infty$.
We prove smoothing properties and optimal Schauder type estimates for a class of nonautonomous evolution equations driven by time dependent Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators in a separable Hilbert space. They arise as Kolmogorov equations of linear nonautonomous stochastic differential equations with Gaussian noise.
We prove smoothing estimates for Schrödinger equations $i\partial_t ϕ+\partial_x (a(x) \partial_x ϕ) =0$ with $a(x)\in \mathrm{BV}$, the space of functions with bounded total variation, real, positive and bounded from below. We then bootstrap these estimates to obtain optimal Strichartz and maximal function estimates, all of which turn out to be identical to the constant coefficient case. We also provide counterexamples showing $a\in \mathrm{BV}$ to be a minimal requirement. Finally, we provide an application to sharp wellposedness for a generalized Benjamin-Ono equation.
We consider the spatially inhomogeneous Landau equation with initial data that is bounded by a Gaussian in the velocity variable. In the case of moderately soft potentials, we show that weak solutions immediately become smooth and remain smooth as long as the mass, energy, and entropy densities remain under control. For very soft potentials, we obtain the same conclusion with the additional assumption that a sufficiently high moment of the solution in the velocity variable remains bounded. Our proof relies on the iteration of local Schauder-type estimates.
We investigate qualitative properties of local solutions $u(t,x)\ge 0$ to the fast diffusion equation, $\partial_t u =Δ(u^m)/m$ with $m<1$, corresponding to general nonnegative initial data. Our main results are quantitative positivity and boundedness estimates for locally defined solutions in domains of the form $[0,T]\times\RR^d$. They combine into forms of new Harnack inequalities that are typical of fast diffusion equations. Such results are new for low $m$ in the so-called very fast diffusion range, precisely for all $m\le m_c=(d-2)/d.$ The boundedness statements are true even for $m\le 0…
We prove three sharp bounds for solutions to the porous medium equation posed on Riemannian manifolds, or for weighted versions of such equation. Firstly we prove a smoothing effect for solutions which is valid on any Cartan-Hadamard manifold whose sectional curvatures are bounded above by a strictly negative constant. This bound includes as a special case the sharp smoothing effect recently proved by Vázquez on the hyperbolic space in \cite{V}, which is similar to the absolute bound valid in the case of bounded Euclidean domains but has a logarithmic correction. Secondly we prove a bound whic…
We consider an abstract second order linear equation with a strong dissipation, namely a friction term which depends on a power of the "elastic" operator. In the homogeneous case, we investigate the phase spaces in which the initial value problem gives rise to a semigroup, and the further regularity of solutions. In the non-homogeneous case, we study how the regularity of solutions depends on the regularity of forcing terms, and we characterize the spaces where a bounded forcing term yields a bounded solution. What we discover is a variety of different regimes, with completely different behavi…
We study qualitative and quantitative properties of local weak solutions of the fast $p$-Laplacian equation, $\partial_t u=Δ_{p}u$, with $1<p<2$. Our main results are quantitative positivity and boundedness estimates for locally defined solutions in domains of $\RR^n\times [0,T]$. We combine these lower and upper bounds in different forms of intrinsic Harnack inequalities, which are new in the very fast diffusion range, that is when $1<p \le 2n/(n+1)$. The boundedness results may be also extended to the limit case $p=1$, while the positivity estimates cannot. We prove the existence as well as …
In this paper, we consider non-autonomous Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operators in smooth exterior domains $Ω\subset \R^d$ subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions. Under suitable assumptions on the coefficients, the solution of the corresponding non-autonomous parabolic Cauchy problem is governed by an evolution system $\{P_Ω(t,s)\}_{0\leq s\leq t}$ on $L^p(Ω)$ for $1< p < \infty$. Furthermore, $L^p$-estimates for spatial derivatives and $L^p$-$L^q$ smoothing properties of $P_Ω(t,s)$, $0\leq s\leq t$, are obtained.
Lions, Perthame, Tadmor conjectured in 1994 an optimal smoothing effect for entropy solutions of nonlinear scalar conservations laws . In this short paper we will restrict our attention to the simpler one-dimensional case. First, supercritical geometric optics lead to sequences of $C^\infty$ solutions uniformly bounded in the Sobolev space conjectured. Second we give continuous solutions which belong exactly to the suitable Sobolev space. In order to do so we give two new definitions of nonlinear flux and we introduce fractional $BV$ spaces.
This article deals with the logistic Keller-Segel model \[ \begin{cases} u_t = Δu - χ\nabla\cdot(u\nabla v) + κu - μu^2, \\ \\ v_t = Δv - v + u \end{cases} \] in bounded two-dimensional domains (with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and for parameters $χ, κ\in \mathbb{R}$ and $μ>0$), and shows that any nonnegative initial data $(u_0,v_0)\in L^1\times W^{1,2}$ lead to global solutions that are smooth in $\barΩ\times(0,\infty)$.
We study the nonlinear diffusion equation $ u_t=Δϕ(u) $ on general Euclidean domains, with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We assume that $ ϕ^\prime(u) $ is bounded from below by $ |u|^{m_1-1} $ for small $ |u| $ and by $ |u|^{m_2-1} $ for large $|u|$, the two exponents $ m_1,m_2 $ being possibly different and larger than one. The equality case corresponds to the well-known porous medium equation. We establish sharp short- and long-time $ L^{q_0} $-$ L^\infty $ smoothing estimates: similar issues have widely been investigated in the literature in the last few years, but the Neumann pr…
The Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation with periodic boundary conditions is considered. It is shown that for $H^s$ initial data, $s>-1/2$, and for any $s_1<\min(3s+1,s+1)$, the difference of the nonlinear and linear evolutions is in $H^{s_1}$ for all times, with at most polynomially growing $H^{s_1}$ norm. The result also extends to KdV with a smooth, mean zero, time-dependent potential in the case $s\geq 0$. Our result and a theorem of Oskolkov for the Airy evolution imply that if one starts with continuous and bounded variation initial data then the solution of KdV (given by the $L^2$ theory o…
We show maximal $L^p$-regularity for non-autonomous Cauchy problems provided the trace spaces are stable in some parameterized sense and the time dependence is of bounded variation. In particular, on $L^2$, we obtain for all $p \in (1,2]$ maximal $L^p$-regularity for non-autonomous elliptic operators with measurable coefficients.
In this paper, we are concerned with complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equations. There are several results on the global existence and smoothing effects of solutions to the initial boundary value problem for (CGL) in bounded or unbounded domains. In this paper, we study the time periodic problem for (CGL) in bounded domains. The main strategy in this paper is to regard (CGL) as a parabolic equation with monotone and non-monotone perturbations and to apply non-monotone perturbation theory of parabolic equations developed by Otani (1984).
We study the homogeneous Cauchy-Dirichlet Problem (CDP) for a nonlinear and nonlocal diffusion equation of singular type of the form $\partial_t u =-\mathcal{L} u^m$ posed on a bounded Euclidean domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N$ with smooth boundary and $N\ge 1$. The linear diffusion operator $\mathcal{L}$ is a sub-Markovian operator, allowed to be of nonlocal type, while the nonlinearity is of singular type, namely $u^m=|u|^{m-1}u$ with $0<m<1$. The prototype equation is the Fractional Fast Diffusion Equation (FFDE), when $\mathcal{L}$ is one of the three possible Dirichlet Fractional Laplacians …
We consider the regular Lagrangian flow X associated to a bounded divergence-free vector field b with bounded variation. We prove a Lusin-Lipschitz regularity result for X and we show that the Lipschitz constant grows at most linearly in time. As a consequence we deduce that both geometric and analytical mixing have a lower bound of order $t^{-1}$ as $t \to \infty$.
In this work we study permanence of hyperbolicity for autonomous differential equations under nonautonomous random/stochastic perturbations. For the linear case, we study robustness and existence of exponential dichotomies for nonautonomous random dynamical systems. Next, we establish a result on the persistence of hyperbolic equilibria for nonlinear differential equations. We show that for each nonautonomous random perturbation of an autonomous semilinear problem with a hyperbolic equilibrium there exists a bounded \textit{random hyperbolic solution} for the associated nonlinear nonautonomous…
We investigate under which assumptions the flow associated to autonomous planar vector fields inherits the Sobolev or BV regularity of the vector field. We consider nearly incompressible and divergence-free vector fields, taking advantage in both cases of the underlying Hamiltonian structure. Finally we provide an example of an autonomous planar Sobolev divergence-free vector field, such that the corresponding regular Lagrangian flow has no bounded variation.
We give a comprehensive study of the 3D Navier-Stokes-Brinkman-Forchheimer equations in a bounded domain endowed with the Dirichlet boundary conditions and non-autonomous external forces. This study includes the questions related with the regularity of weak solutions, their dissipativity in higher energy spaces and the existence of the corresponding uniform attractors
This paper applies Hermite function techniques to give elementary proofs of Kato type smoothing estimates for the Schrödinger equation with quadratic potential in R^n+1. This is equivalent to proving a uniform L^2(R^n) to L^2(R^n) boundedness for a family of singularized Hermite projection kernels. As an applicationas the above estimate, we also prove the R^9 collapsing variable type Strichartz estimate.
The paper describes a new approach to global smoothing problems for dispersive and non-dispersive evolution equations based on the global canonical transforms and the underlying global microlocal analysis. For this purpose, the Egorov-type theorem is established with canonical transformations in the form of a class of Fourier integral operators, and their weighted L2-boundedness properties are derived. This allows us to globally reduce general dispersive equations to normal forms in one or two dimensions. Then, several comparison principles are introduced to relate different smoothing estimate…
We establish boundedness estimates for solutions of generalized porous medium equations of the form $$ \partial_t u+(-\mathfrak{L})[u^m]=0\quad\quad\text{in $\mathbb{R}^N\times(0,T)$}, $$ where $m\geq1$ and $-\mathfrak{L}$ is a linear, symmetric, and nonnegative operator. The wide class of operators we consider includes, but is not limited to, Lévy operators. Our quantitative estimates take the form of precise $L^1$--$L^\infty$-smoothing effects and absolute bounds, and their proofs are based on the interplay between a dual formulation of the problem and estimates on the Green function of $-\m…
This paper is concerned with pullback attractors of the stochastic p-Laplace equation defined on the entire space R^n. We first establish the asymptotic compactness of the equation in L^2(R^n) and then prove the existence and uniqueness of non-autonomous random attractors. This attractor is pathwise periodic if the non-autonomous deterministic forcing is time periodic. The difficulty of non-compactness of Sobolev embeddings on R^n is overcome by the uniform smallness of solutions outside a bounded domain.
We consider reaction-diffusion equations either posed on Riemannian manifolds or in the Euclidean weighted setting, with pow\-er-type nonlinearity and slow diffusion of porous medium time. We consider the particularly delicate case $p<m$ in problem (1.1), a case largely left open in [21] even when the initial datum is smooth and compactly supported. We prove global existence for L$^m$ data, and a smoothing effect for the evolution, i.e. that solutions corresponding to such data are bounded at all positive times with a quantitative bound on their L$^\infty$ norm. As a consequence of this fact a…
We consider a non-autonomous evolutionary problem \[ u' (t)+\mathcal A (t)u(t)=f(t), \quad u(0)=u_0, \] where $V, H$ are Hilbert spaces such that $V$ is continuously and densely embedded in $H$ and the operator $\mathcal A (t)\colon V\to V^\prime$ is associated with a coercive, bounded, symmetric form $\mathfrak{a}(t,.,.)\colon V\times V \to \mathbb{C}$ for all $t \in [0,T]$. Given $f \in L^2(0,T;H)$, $u_0\in V$ there exists always a unique solution $u \in MR(V,V'):= L^2(0,T;V) \cap H^1(0,T;V')$. The purpose of this article is to investigate when $u \in H^1(0,T;H)$. This property of maximal re…
The existence of a pullback attractor is established for the singularly perturbed FitzHugh-Nagumo system defined on the entire space $R^n$ when external terms are unbounded in a phase space. The pullback asymptotic compactness of the system is proved by using uniform a priori estimates for far-field values of solutions. Although the limiting system has no global attractor, we show that the pullback attractors for the perturbed system with bounded external terms are uniformly bounded, and hence do not blow up as a small parameter approaches zero.

We study the long time behavior of solutions of the non-autonomous Reaction-Diffusion equation defined on the entire space R^n when external terms are unbounded in a phase space. The existence of a pullback global attractor for the equation is established in L^2(R^n) and H^1(R^n), respectively. The pullback asymptotic compactness of solutions is proved by using uniform a priori estimates on the tails of solutions outside bounded domains.
Given a complete, connected Riemannian manifold $ \mathbb{M}^n $ with Ricci curvature bounded from below, we discuss the stability of the solutions of a porous medium-type equation with respect to the 2-Wasserstein distance. We produce (sharp) stability estimates under negative curvature bounds, which to some extent generalize well-known results by Sturm and Otto-Westdickenberg. The strategy of the proof mainly relies on a quantitative $L^1-L^\infty$ smoothing property of the equation considered, combined with the Hamiltonian approach developed by Ambrosio, Mondino and Savaré in a metric-measu…
