In this paper, we prove that a particular nondegenerate, nonlinear, autonomous parabolic partial differential equation with a nonlocal mass transfer admits the local existence of classical solutions. The equation was developed to qualitatively describe temporal changes in population densities over space through accounting for location desirability and fast, long-range travel. Beginning with sufficiently regular initial conditions, through smoothing the PDE and employing energy arguments, we obtain a sequence of approximators converging to a classical solution.
In this paper, we study the global dynamics of a general $2\times 2$ competition models with nonsymmetric nonlocal dispersal operators. Our results indicate that local stability implies global stability provided that one of the diffusion rates is sufficiently small. This paper continues the work in \cite{BaiLi2017}, where competition models with symmetric nonlocal operators are considered.
On a PDE-ODE-PDE model for two interacting cell populations under the influence of an acidic environment and with nonlocal intra- and interspecific growth limitation
In this paper, the global dynamics of two-species Lotka-Volterra competition models with nonlocal dispersals is studied. Under the assumption that dispersal kernels are symmetric, we prove that except for very special situations, local stability of semi-trivial steady states implies global stability, while when both semi-trivial steady states are locally unstable, the positive steady state exists and is globally stable. Moreover, our results cover the case that competition coefficients are location-dependent and dispersal strategies are mixture of local and nonlocal dispersals.
In this paper, we gives a complete classification of the global dynamics of two- species Lotka-Volterra competition models with nonlocal dispersals: where K, P represent nonlocal operators, under the assumptions that the nonlo- cal operators are symmetric, the models admit two semi-trivial steady states and 0<bc<1. In particular, when both semi-trivial steady states are locally stable, it is proved that there exist infinitely many steady states and the solution with non- negative and nontrivial initial data converges to some steady state. Furthermore, we generalize these results to the case th…
In this article, we will prove the existence of infinitely many positive weak solutions to the following nonlocal elliptic PDE. \begin{align} (-Δ)^s u&= \fracλ{u^γ}+ f(x,u)~\text{in}~Ω,\nonumber u&=0~\text{in}~\mathbb{R}^N\setminusΩ,\nonumber \end{align} where $Ω$ is an open bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with Lipschitz boundary, $N>2s$, $s\in (0,1)$, $γ\in (0,1)$. We will employ variational techniques to show the existence of infinitely many weak solutions of the above problem.
We consider parabolic equations on bounded smooth open sets $\Om\subset \R^N$ ($N\ge 1$) with mixed Dirichlet type boundary-exterior conditions associated with the elliptic operator $\mathscr{L} \coloneqq - Δ+ (-Δ)^{s}$ ($0<s<1$). Firstly, we prove several well-posedness and regularity results of the associated elliptic and parabolic problems with smooth, and then with singular boundary-exterior data. Secondly, we show the existence of optimal solutions of associated optimal control problems, and we characterize the optimality conditions. This is the first time that such topics have been prese…
Seasonality frequently occurs in population models, and the corresponding seasonal patterns have been of great interest to scientists. This paper is concerned with traveling waves to a time-periodic bistable Lotka-Volterra competition system with nonlocal dispersal. We first establish the existence, uniqueness and stability of traveling wave solutions for this system. Then, by utilizing comparison principle and the stability property, the relationship among the bistable wave speed, the asymptotic propagation speeds of the associated monotone subsystems and the speed of upper/lower solutions is…
In this paper, we prove the existence of multiple solutions for a nonlinear nonlocal elliptic PDE involving a singularity which is given as \begin{eqnarray} (-Δ_p)^s u&=& \fracλ{u^γ}+u^q~\text{in}~Ω,\nonumber u&=&0~\text{in}~\mathbb{R}^N\setminusΩ,\nonumber u&>& 0~\text{in}~Ω\nonumber, \end{eqnarray} where $Ω$ is an open bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with smooth boundary, $N>ps$, $s\in (0,1)$, $λ>0$, $0<γ<1$, $1<p<\infty$, $p-1<q\leq p_s^{*}=\frac{Np}{N-ps}$. We employ variational techniques to show the existence of multiple positive weak solutions of the above problem. We also prove that f…
We study the convenience of a nonlocal dispersal strategy in a reaction-diffusion system with a fractional Laplacian operator. We show that there are circumstances - namely, a precise condition on the distribution of the resource - under which a nonlocal dispersal behavior is favored. In particular, we consider the linearization of a biological system that models the interaction of two biological species, one with local and one with nonlocal dispersal, that are competing for the same resource. We give a simple, concrete example of resources for which the equilibrium with only the local populat…
In this paper, we present a general methodology for investigating the linear stability of localized solutions in PDEs and nonlocal equations on $\mathbb{R}^m$. More specifically, we control the spectrum of the Jacobian $D\mathbb{F}(\tilde{u})$ at a localized solution $\tilde{u}$, enclosing both the eigenvalues and the essential spectrum. Our approach is computer-assisted and is based on a controlled approximation of $D\mathbb{F}(\tilde{u})$ by its Fourier coefficients counterpart on a bounded domain $Ω_d = (-d,d)^m$. We first control the spectrum of the Fourier coefficients operator combining …
For a competition-diffusion blow-up system involving the fractional Laplacian of the form \begin{equation*}\label{syst1} -(-Δ)^su=uv^2,\quad-(-Δ)^sv=vu^2,\quad u,v>0 \ \mathrm{in} \ \mathbb{R}^N, \end{equation*} whith $s\in(0,1)$, we prove that the maximal asymptotic growth rate for its entire solutions is $2s$. Moreover, since we are able to construct symmetric solutions to the problem, when $N=2$ with prescribed growth arbitrarily close to the critical one, we can conclude that the asymptotic bound found is optimal. Finally, we prove existence of genuinely higher dimensional solutions, when …
We show the existence of ground state solutions to the following stationary system coming from some coupled fractional dispersive equations such as: nonlinear fractional Schrödinger (NLFS) equations (for dimension $n=1,\, 2,\, 3$) or NLFS and fractional Korteweg-de Vries equations (for $n=1$), $$ \left \{ \begin{array}{ll} (-Δ)^{s} u+ λ_1 u &= u_1^{3}+βuv,\quad u\in W^{s,2}(\mathbb{R}^n), (-Δ)^{s} v + λ_2 v &= \frac 12 v^{2}+\frac 12 βu^2,\quad v\in W^{s,2}(\mathbb{R}^n), \end{array} \right. $$ where $λ_j>0$, $j=1,2$, $β\in \mathbb{R}$, $n=1,\, 2,\, 3$, and $\frac n4< s<1$. Precisely, we prove…
We consider a population structured by a spacevariable and a phenotypical trait, submitted to dispersion, mutations, growth and nonlocal competition. We introduce theclimate shift due to {\it Global Warming} and discuss the dynamicsof the population by studying the long time behavior of thesolution of the Cauchy problem. We consider three sets ofassumptions on the growth function. In the so-called {\it confinedcase} we determine a critical climate change speed for theextinction or survival of the population, the latter case taking place by "strictly following the climate shift". In the so-calle…
We obtain an existence and uniqueness theorem for fully coupled forward-backward SDEs (FBSDEs) with jumps via the classical solution to the associated quasilinear parabolic partial integro-differential equation (PIDE), and provide the explicit form of the FBSDE solution. Moreover, we embed the associated PIDE into a suitable class of non-local quasilinear parabolic PDEs which allows us to extend the methodology of Ladyzhenskaya et al (1968) to non-local PDEs of this class. Namely, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of a classical solution to both the Cauchy problem and the initial-boundary…
In this paper, we study a certain class of nonlocal partial differential equations (PDEs). The equations arise from a key problem in network science, i.e., network generation from local interaction rules, which result in a change of the degree distribution as time progresses. The evolution of the generating function of this degree distribution can be described by a nonlocal PDE. To address this equation we will rigorously convert it into a local first order PDE. Then, we use theory of characteristics to prove solvability and regularity of the solution. Next, we investigate the existence of ste…
The magnetization ripple is a microstructure formed by the magnetization in a thin-film ferromagnet. It is triggered by the random orientation of the grains in the poly-crystalline material. In an approximation of the micromagnetic model, which is sketched in this paper, this leads to a nonlocal (and strongly anisotropic) elliptic equation in two dimensions with white noise as a right hand side. However, like in singular Stochastic PDE, this right hand side is too rough for the non-linearity in the equation. In order to develop a small-date well-posedness theory, we take inspiration from the r…
In this paper we study the existence and multiplicity of two distinct nontrivial weak solutions of the following equation in Nehari manifold. We have also proved that these solutions are in $L^{\infty}(Ω)$. \begin{align*} \begin{split} -Δ_{p(x,y)}^{s(x,y)}u &= β|u|^{α(x)-2}u+λf(x,u)\,\,\mbox{in}\,\,Ω,\\ u &= 0\,\, \mbox{in}\,\, \mathbb{R}^{N}\setminusΩ\end{split} \end{align*} Here, $λ, β> 0$ are parameters and $f(x,u)$ is a general nonlinear term satisfying certain conditions. The domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N (N\geq 2)$ is smooth and bounded. The relation between the exponents are assumed in t…
We consider several non-local models for traffic flow, including both microscopic ODE models and macroscopic PDE models. The ODE models describe the movement of individual cars, where each driver adjusts the speed according to the road condition over an interval in the front of the car. These models are known as the FtLs (Follow-the-Leaders) models. The corresponding PDE models, describing the evolution for the density of cars, are conservation laws with non-local flux functions. For both types of models, we study stationary traveling wave profiles and stationary discrete traveling wave profil…
This paper is concerned with a Lotka-Volterra type competition model with free boundaries in time-periodic environment. One species is assumed to adopt nonlocal dispersal and the other one adopts mixed dispersal, which is a combination of both random dispersal and nonlocal dispersal. We show that this free boundary problem with more general growth functions admits a unique solution defined for all time. A spreading-vanishing dichotomy is obtained and criteria for spreading and vanishing are provided. Moreover, under the weak competition condition we provide the long-time asymptotic behavior of…
We prove the well-posedness results, i.e. existence, uniqueness, and stability, of the solutions to a class of nonlocal fully nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs), where there is an external time parameter $t$ on top of the temporal and spatial variables $(s,y)$ and thus the problem could be considered as a flow of equations. The nonlocality comes from the dependence on the unknown function and its first- and second-order derivatives evaluated at not only the local point $(t,s,y)$ but also at the diagonal line of the time domain $(s,s,y)$. Such equations arise from time-in…
We derive the solution representation for a large class of nonlocal boundary value problems for linear evolution PDEs with constant coefficients in one space variable. The prototypical such PDE is the heat equation, for which problems of this form model physical phenomena in chemistry and for which we formulate and prove a full result. We also consider the third order case, which is much less studied and has been shown by the authors to have very different structural properties in general. The nonlocal conditions we consider can be reformulated as \emph{multipoint conditions}, and then an expl…
This paper deals with the solution of following chemotaxis system with competitive kinetics and nonlocal terms \begin{eqnarray*} \left\{ \begin{array}{llll} u_t=d_1Δu-χ_1\nabla\cdot(u\nabla w)+u\left(a_0-a_1u-a_{2}v-a_3\int_Ωu-a_4\int_Ωv\right), &x\in Ω, t>0,\\ v_t=d_2Δv-χ_2\nabla\cdot(v\nabla w)+v\left(b_0-b_1u-b_{2}v-b_3\int_Ωu-b_4\int_Ωv\right), &x\in Ω, t>0,\\ w_t=d_3Δw-λw+k u+l v, &x\inΩ, t>0, \end{array} \right. \end{eqnarray*} in a smoothly bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N, N\geq1$, where $a_0, a_1, a_2, b_0, b_1, b_2>0$ and $a_3, a_4, b_3, b_4\in\mathbb{R}$. The purpose of this pa…
We prove existence and Sobolev regularity of solutions of a nonlinear system of degenerate-parabolic PDEs with self- and cross-diffusion, transport/confinement and nonlocal interaction terms. The macroscopic system of PDEs is formally derived from a large particle system and models the evolution of an arbitrary number of species with quadratic porous-medium interactions in a bounded domain $Ω$ in any spatial dimension. The cross interactions between different species are scaled by a parameter $δ<1$, with the $δ= 0$ case corresponding to no interactions across species. A smallness condition on …
We construct a deterministic, Lagrangian many-particle approximation to a class of nonlocal transport PDEs with nonlinear mobility arising in many contexts in biology and social sciences. The approximating particle system is a nonlocal version of the follow-the-leader scheme. We rigorously prove that a suitable discrete piece-wise density reconstructed from the particle scheme converges strongly in $L^1_{loc}$ towards the unique entropy solution to the target PDE as the number of particles tends to infinity. The proof is based on uniform BV estimates on the approximating sequence and on the ve…
We prove the existence of fast traveling pulse solutions in excitable media with non-local coupling. Existence results had been known, until now, in the case of local, diffusive coupling and in the case of a discrete medium, with finite-range, non-local coupling. Our approach replaces methods from geometric singular perturbation theory, that had been crucial in previous existence proofs, by a PDE oriented approach, relying on exponential weights, Fredholm theory, and commutator estimates.
This paper studies the non-negative solutions of the Keller-Segel model with a nonlocal nonlinear source in a bounded domain. The competition between the aggregation and the nonlocal reaction term is highlighted: when the growth factor is stronger than the dampening effect, with the help of the nonlocal term, the model admits a classical solution which is uniformly bounded. Moreover, when the growth factor is of the same order compared to the dampening effect, the nonlocal nonlinear exponents can prevent the chemotactic collapse. Global existence of classical solutions is shown for an appropri…
In this paper we address the analytical investigation of a model for adhesive contact, which includes nonlocal sources of damage on the contact surface, such as the elongation. The resulting PDE system features various nonlinearities rendering the unilateral contact conditions, the physical constraints on the internal variables, as well as the integral contributions related to the nonlocal forces. For the associated initial-boundary value problem we obtain a global-in-time existence result by proving the existence of a local solution via a suitable approximation procedure and then by extending…
We prove higher Sobolev regularity for bounded weak solutions to a class of nonlinear nonlocal integro-differential equations. The leading operator exhibits nonuniform growth, switching between two different fractional elliptic ``phases" that are determined by the zero set of a modulating coefficient. Solutions are shown to improve both in integrability and differentiability. These results apply to operators with rough kernels and modulating coefficients. To obtain these results we adapt a particular fractional version of the Gehring lemma developed by Kuusi, Mingione, and Sire in their work `…
The inclusion of cognitive processes, such as perception, learning and memory, are inevitable in mechanistic animal movement modelling. Cognition is the unique feature that distinguishes animal movement from mere particle movement in chemistry or physics. Hence, it is essential to incorporate such knowledge-based processes into animal movement models. Here, we summarize popular deterministic mathematical models derived from first principles that begin to incorporate such influences on movement behaviour mechanisms. Most generally, these models take the form of nonlocal reaction-diffusion-advec…
For cross-diffusion systems possessing an entropy (i.e. a Lyapunov functional)we study nonlocal versions and exhibit sufficient conditions to ensure that thenonlocal version inherits the entropy structure. These nonlocal systems can beunderstood as population models per se or as approximation of the classical ones. With the preserved entropy, we can rigorously link the approximating nonlocalversion to the classical local system. From a modelling perspective this gives away to prove a derivation of the model and from a PDE perspective this providesa regularisation scheme to prove the existence o…
In this work, given $p\in (1,\infty)$, we prove the existence and simplicity of the first eigenvalue $λ_p$ and its corresponding eigenvector $(u_p,v_p)$, for the following local/nonlocal PDE system \begin{equation}\label{Eq0} \left\{ \begin{array}{rclcl} -Δ_p u + (-Δ)^r_p u & = & \frac{2α}{α+β}λ|u|^{α-2}|v|^βu & \mbox{in} & Ω\\ -Δ_p v + (-Δ)^s_p v& = & \frac{2β}{α+β}λ|u|^α|v|^{β-2}v & \mbox{in} & Ω u& =& 0&\text{ on } & \mathbb{R}^N \setminus Ω v& =& 0&\text{ on } & \mathbb{R}^N \setminus Ω, \end{array} \right. \end{equation} where $Ω$$\subset$ $\mathbb{R}^N$ is a bounded open domain, $0<r, s<…
We study a system of PDEs modeling the population dynamics of two competitive species whose spatial movements are governed by both diffusion and mutually repulsive chemotaxis effects. We prove that solutions to this system are globally well-posed, without any smallness assumptions on the chemotactic coefficients. Moreover, in the weak competition regime, we prove that neither species can be driven to extinction as the time goes to infinity, regardless of how strong the chemotaxis coefficients are. Finally, long-time behaviors of the system are studied both analytically in the weakly nonlinear …

The nonlinear and nonlocal PDE $$ |v_t|^{p-2}v_t+(-Δ_p)^sv=0 \, , $$ where $$ (-Δ_p)^s v\, (x,t)=2 \,\text{PV} \int_{\mathbb{R}^n}\frac{|v(x,t)-v(x+y,t)|^{p-2}(v(x,t)-v(x+y,t))}{|y|^{n+sp}}\, dy, $$ has the interesting feature that an associated Rayleigh quotient is non-increasing in time along solutions. We prove the existence of a weak solution of the corresponding initial value problem which is also unique as a viscosity solution. Moreover, we provide Hölder estimates for viscosity solutions and relate the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the eigenvalue problem for the fractional $p$-Lap…
We introduce the problem of parameter identification for a coupled nonlocal Cahn-Hilliard-reaction-diffusion PDE system stemming from a recently introduced tumor growth model. The inverse problem of identifying relevant parameters is studied here by relying on techniques from optimal control theory of PDE systems. The parameters to be identified play the role of controls, and a suitable cost functional of tracking-type is introduced to account for the discrepancy between some a priori knowledge of the parameters and the controls themselves. The analysis is carried out for several classes of mo…
