Given a complete, connected Riemannian manifold $ \mathbb{M}^n $ with Ricci curvature bounded from below, we discuss the stability of the solutions of a porous medium-type equation with respect to the 2-Wasserstein distance. We produce (sharp) stability estimates under negative curvature bounds, which to some extent generalize well-known results by Sturm and Otto-Westdickenberg. The strategy of the proof mainly relies on a quantitative $L^1-L^\infty$ smoothing property of the equation considered, combined with the Hamiltonian approach developed by Ambrosio, Mondino and Savaré in a metric-measure setting.
We study families of porous medium equation with nonlocal pressure. We construct their weak solutions via JKO schemes for modified Wasserstein distances. We also establish the regularization effect and decay estimates for the $L^p$ norms.
In this paper, we study the Wasserstein gradient flow structure of the porous medium equation. We prove that, for the case of $q$-Gaussians on the real line, the functional derived by the JKO-discretization scheme is asymptotically equivalent to a rate-large-deviation-like functional. The result explains why the Wasserstein metric as well as the combination of it with the Tsallis-entropy play an important role.
Given $\Bbb R^2, $ with a ``good'' complete metric, we show that the unique solution of the Ricci flow approaches a soliton at time infinity. Solitons are solutions of the Ricci flow, which move only by diffeomorphism. The Ricci flow on $\Bbb R^2$ is the limiting case of the porous medium equation when $m$ is zero. The results in the Ricci flow may therefore be interpreted as sufficient conditions on the initial data, which guarantee that the corresponding unique solution for the porous medium equation on the entire plane asymptotically behaves like a ``soliton-solution''.
In this paper, we study the discrete Morse flow for the Ricci flow on football, which is the 2-sphere with removed north and south poles and with the metric $g_0$ of constant scalar curvature, and and for Porous media equation on a bounded regular domain in the plane. We show that with a suitable assumption about $g(0)$ we have a weak approximated discrete Morse flow for the approximated Ricci flow and Porous media equation on any time intervals.
We consider a family of fractional porous media equations, recently studied by Caffarelli and Vázquez. We show the construction of a weak solution as Wasserstein gradient flow of a square fractional Sobolev norm. Energy dissipation inequality, regularizing effect and decay estimates for the $L^p$ norms are established. Moreover, we show that a classical porous medium equation can be obtained as a limit case.
We study the heat equation on time-dependent metric measure spaces (as well as the dual and the adjoint heat equation) and prove existence, uniqueness and regularity. Of particular interest are properties which characterize the underlying space as a super Ricci flow as previously introduced by the second author. Our main result yields the equivalence of (i) dynamic convexity of the Boltzmann entropy on the (time-dependent) $L^2$-Wasserstein space; (ii) monotonicity of $L^2$-Kantorovich-Wasserstein distances under the dual heat flow acting on probability measures (backward in time); (iii) gradi…
We perform asymptotic analysis for the Euler--Riesz system posed in either $\mathbb{T}^d$ or $\mathbb{R}^d$ in the high-force regime and establish a quantified relaxation limit result from the Euler--Riesz system to the fractional porous medium equation. We provide a unified approach for asymptotic analysis regardless of the presence of pressure, based on the modulated energy estimates, the Wasserstein distance of order $2$, and the bounded Lipschitz distance.

We consider degenerate porous medium equations with a divergence type of drift terms. We establish the existence of $L^{q}$-weak solutions (satisfying energy estimates or even further with moment and speed estimates in Wasserstein spaces), in case the drift term belongs to a sub-scaling (including scaling invariant) class depending on $q$ and $m$ caused by the nonlinear structure of diffusion, which is a major difference compared to that of a linear case. It is noticeable that the classes of drift terms become wider if the drift term is divergence-free. Similar conditions of gradients of drift…
In this work we derive local gradient and Laplacian estimates of the Aronson-Bénilan and Li-Yau type for positive solutions of porous medium equations posed on Riemannian manifolds with a lower Ricci curvature bound. We also prove similar results for some fast diffusion equations. Inspired by Perelman's work we discover some new entropy formulae for these equations.
In this article, a proof of the interpolation inequality along geodesics in $p$-Wasserstein spaces is given. This interpolation inequality was the main ingredient to prove the Borel-Brascamp-Lieb inequality for general Riemannian and Finsler manifolds and led Lott-Villani and Sturm to define an abstract Ricci curvature condition. Following their ideas, a similar condition can be defined and for positively curved spaces one can prove a Poincaré inequality. Using Gigli's recently developed calculus on metric measure spaces, even a $q$-Laplacian comparison theorem holds on $q$-infinitesimal conve…
In this paper we give a new proof of the (strong) displacement convexity of a class of integral functionals defined on a compact Riemannian manifold satisfying a lower Ricci curvature bound. Our approach does not rely on existence and regularity results for optimal transport maps on Riemannian manifolds, but it is based on the Eulerian point of view recently introduced by Otto-Westdickenberg and on the metric characterization of the gradient flows generated by the functionals in the Wasserstein space.
We investigate existence and uniqueness of solutions of the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation on a class of Cartan-Hadamard manifolds. We suppose that the radial Ricci curvature, which is everywhere nonpositive as well as sectional curvatures, can diverge negatively at infinity with an at most quadratic rate: in this sense it is referred to as critical. The main novelty with respect to previous results is that, under such hypotheses, we are able to deal with unbounded initial data and solutions. Moreover, by requiring a matching bound from above on sectional curvatures, we can also…
In this paper we introduce a synthetic notion of Riemannian Ricci bounds from below for metric measure spaces (X,d,m) which is stable under measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and rules out Finsler geometries. It can be given in terms of an enforcement of the Lott, Sturm and Villani geodesic convexity condition for the entropy coupled with the linearity of the heat flow. Besides stability, it enjoys the same tensorization, global-to-local and local-to-global properties. In these spaces, that we call RCD(K,\infty) spaces, we prove that the heat flow (which can be equivalently characterized ei…
Aim of this paper is to discuss convergence of pointed metric measure spaces in absence of any compactness condition. We propose various definitions, show that all of them are equivalent and that for doubling spaces these are also equivalent to the well known measured-Gromov-Hausdorff convergence. Then we show that the curvature conditions $CD(K,\infty)$ and $RCD(K,\infty)$ are stable under this notion of convergence and that the heat flow passes to the limit as well, both in the Wasserstein and in the $L^2$-framework. We also prove the variational convergence of Cheeger energies in the natura…
This paper is devoted to a deeper understanding of the heat flow and to the refinement of calculus tools on metric measure spaces (X,d,m). Our main results are: - A general study of the relations between the Hopf-Lax semigroup and Hamilton-Jacobi equation in metric spaces (X,d). - The equivalence of the heat flow in L^2(X,m) generated by a suitable Dirichlet energy and the Wasserstein gradient flow of the relative entropy functional in the space of probability measures P(X). - The proof of density in energy of Lipschitz functions in the Sobolev space W^{1,2}(X,d,m). - A fine and very general a…
In this paper, we first prove a localized Hamilton-type gradient estimate for the positive solutions of Porous Media type equations: $$u_t=ΔF(u),$$ with $F'(u) > 0$, on a complete Riemannian manifold with Ricci curvature bounded from below. In the second part, we study Fast Diffusion Equation (FDE) and Porous Media Equation (PME): $$u_t=Δ(u^p),\qquad p>0,$$ and obtain localized Hamilton-type gradient estimates for FDE and PME in a larger range of $p$ than that for Aronson-Bénilan estimate, Harnack inequalities and Cauchy problems in the literature. Applying the localized gradient estimates for…
We consider the relationship between Hele-Shaw evolution with drift, the porous medium equation with superharmonic drift, and a congested crowd motion model originally proposed by [MRS]- [MRSV]. We first use viscosity solutions to show that the porous medium equation solutions converge to the Hele- Shaw solution as the exponent tends to infinity. Next, using of the gradient flow structure of both the porous medium equation and the crowd motion model, we prove that the porous medium equation solutions also converge to the congested crowd motion. Combining these results lets us deduce that in th…
We provide a quick overview of various calculus tools and of the main results concerning the heat flow on compact metric measure spaces, with applications to spaces with lower Ricci curvature bounds. Topics include the Hopf-Lax semigroup and the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in metric spaces, a new approach to differentiation and to the theory of Sobolev spaces over metric measure spaces, the equivalence of the L^2-gradient flow of a suitably defined "Dirichlet energy" and the Wasserstein gradient flow of the relative entropy functional, a metric version of Brenier's Theorem, and a new (stronger) d…
We show existence and uniqueness of very weak solutions of the Cauchy problem for the porous medium equation on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds satisfying suitable lower bounds on Ricci curvature, with initial data that can grow at infinity at a prescribed rate, that depends crucially on the curvature bounds. The curvature conditions we require are sharp for uniqueness in the sense that if they are not satisfied then, in general, there can be infinitely many solutions of the Cauchy problem even for bounded data. Furthermore, under matching upper bounds on sectional curvatures, we give a precise esti…
We study the long-time behaviour of nonnegative solutions of the Porous Medium Equation posed on Cartan-Hadamard manifolds having very large negative curvature, more precisely when the sectional or Ricci curvatures diverge at infinity more than quadratically in terms of the geodesic distance to the pole. We find an unexpected separate-variable behaviour that reminds one of Dirichlet problems on bounded Euclidean domains. As a crucial step, we prove existence of solutions to a related sublinear elliptic problem, a result of independent interest. Uniqueness of solutions vanishing at infinity is …
The thin-film and quantum drift diffusion equations belong to a fourth-order family of evolution equations proposed in ref. 16 to be analogous to the (second-order) porous medium family. They are $2$-Wasserstein gradient ($W_2$) flows of the generalized Fisher information $I(u)$ just as the porous medium family was shown to be the $W_2$ gradient flow of the generalized entropy $E(u)$ by Otto. The identity $I(u) = |\nabla_{W_2} E(u)|^2/2$ (formally) becomes $\Hess_{W_2} I(u_*) =\Hess_{W_2}^2 E(u_*)$ when linearizing the equation around its self-similar solution $u_*$. We couple this relation wi…

We construct geodesics in the Wasserstein space of probability measure along which all the measures have an upper bound on their density that is determined by the densities of the endpoints of the geodesic. Using these geodesics we show that a local Poincaré inequality and the measure contraction property follow from the Ricci curvature bounds defined by Sturm. We also show for a large class of convex functionals that a local Poincaré inequality is implied by the weak displacement convexity of the functional.
It is known that, for the parabolic-elliptic Keller-Segel system with critical porous-medium diffusion in dimension $\RR^d$, $d \ge 3$ (also referred to as the quasilinear Smoluchowski-Poisson equation), there is a critical value of the chemotactic sensitivity (measuring in some sense the strength of the drift term) above which there are solutions blowing up in finite time and below which all solutions are global in time. This global existence result is shown to remain true for the parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system with critical porous-medium type diffusion in dimension $\RR^d$, $d \ge 3…
By means of a space-time Wasserstein control, we show the monotonicity of the W-entropy functional in time along heat flows on possibly singular metric measure spaces with non-negative Ricci curvature and a finite upper bound of dimension in an appropriate sense. The associated rigidity result on the rate of dissipation of the W-entropy is also proved. These extend known results even on weighted Riemannian manifolds in some respects. In addition, we reveal that some singular spaces will exhibit the rigidity models while only the Euclidean space does in the class of smooth weighted Riemannian m…
In this paper, we study the existence of complete Yamabe metric with zero scalar curvature on an n-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold $(M,g_0)$, $n\geq 3$. Under suitable conditions about the initial metric, we show that there is a global fine solution to the Yamabe flow. The interesting point here is that we have no curvature assumption about the initial metric. We show that on an n-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold $(M,g_0)$ with non-negative Ricci curvature, $n\geq 3$, the Yamabe flow enjoys the local $L^1$-stability property from the view-point of the porous media equation.
