We study the tau function of the KP-hierarchy associated with an (n,1) curve $y^n=x-α$. If $α=0$ the corresponding tau function is 1. On the other hand if $α\neq 0$ the tau function becomes the exponential of a quadratic function of the time variables. By applying vertex opertaors to the latter we obtain soliton solutions on non-zero constant backgrounds.
We discuss some algebraic aspects of the integrable vector non-linear Schrödinger hierarchies (GNLS$_{r}$). These are hierarchies of zero-curvature equations constructed from affine Kac-Moody algebras $\hat{sl}_{r+1}$. Using the dressing transformation method and the tau-function formalism, we construct the N-soliton solutions of the GNLS$_{r}$ systems. The explicit matrix elements in the case of GNLS$_{1}$ are computed using level one vertex operator representations.
We consider KP tau function of hypergeometric type $τ({\bf t},T,{\bf t}^*)$, where the set ${\bf t}$ is the KP higher times and $T,{\bf t}^*$ are sets of parameters. Fixing ${\bf t}^*$, we find that $τ({\bf t},T,{\bf t}^*)$ is an infinite-soliton solution of different (dual) multi-component KP (and TL) hierarchy, where the roles of the variables ${\bf t}$ and $T$ are interchanged. When $τ({\bf t},T,{\bf t}^*)$ is a polynomial in ${\bf t}$, we obtain a $N$-soliton solution of the dual hierarchy. Parameters of the solitons are related to the Frobenius coordinates of partitions in the Schur funct…
We define the set of almost-intertwining matrices to be all triples(X,Y,Z) of n x n matrices for which XZ=YX+T for some rank one matrix T. A surprisingly simple formula is given for tau-functions of the KP hierarchy in terms of such triples. The tau-functions produced in this way include the soliton and vanishing rational solutions. The induced dynamics of the eigenvalues of the matrix X are considered, leading in special cases to the Ruijsenaars-Schneider particle system.
There is a general method for constructing a soliton hierarchy from a splitting of a loop group as a positive and a negative sub-groups together with a commuting linearly independent sequence in the positive Lie subalgebra. Many known soliton hierarchies can be constructed this way. The formal inverse scattering associates to each f in the negative subgroup a solution u_f of the hierarchy. When there is a 2 co-cycle of the Lie algebra that vanishes on both sub-algebras, Wilson constructed a tau function tau_f for each element f in the negative subgroup. In this paper, we give integral formulas…
We study the relation between the group-algebraic approach and the dressing symmetry one to the soliton solutions of the $A_n^{(1)}$ Toda field theory in 1+1 dimensions. Originally solitons in the affine Toda models has been found by Olive, Turok and Underwood. Single solitons are created by exponentials of elements which ad-diagonalize the principal Heisenberg subalgebra. Alternatively Babelon and Bernard exploited the dressing symmetry to reproduce the known expressions for the fundamental tau functions in the sine-Gordon model. In this paper we show the equivalence between these two methods…
In the present paper, we are concerned with the tau function and its connection with the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) theory for the massive Thirring (MT) model. First, we bilinearize the massive Thirring model under both the vanishing and nonvanishing boundary conditions. Starting from a set of bilinear equations of two-component KP-Toda hierarchy, we derive the multi-bright solution to the MT model by the KP hierarchy reductions. Then, we show that the discrete KP equation can generate a set of bilinear equations of a deformed KP-Toda hierarchy through Miwa transformation. By imposing constra…
The line-soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili (KP) equation are investigated in this article using the tau-function formalism. In particular, the Wronskian and the Grammian forms of the tau-function are discussed, and the equivalence of these two forms are established. Furthermore, the interaction properties of two special types of 2-soliton solutions of the KP equation are studied in details.
Soliton Solutions of Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) were constructed for given degenerate curves $y^2 = (x-c)P(x)^2$ in terms of hyperelliptic sigma functions and explicit Abelian integrals. Connection between sigma functions and tau function were also presented.
We continue the study of the B-Toda hierarchy (the Toda lattice with the constraint of type B) which can be regarded as a discretization of the BKP hierarchy. We introduce the tau-function of the B-Toda hierarchy and obtain the bilinear equations for it. Examples of soliton tau-functions are presented in the explicit form.
We study a general class of line-soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KPII) equation by investigating the Wronskian form of its tau-function. We show that, in addition to previously known line-soliton solutions, this class also contains a large variety of new multi-soliton solutions, many of which exhibit nontrivial spatial interaction patterns. We also show that, in general, such solutions consist of unequal numbers of incoming and outgoing line solitons. From the asymptotic analysis of the tau-function, we explicitly characterize the incoming and outgoing line-solitons of this…
Equations of motion for a classical 3d discrete model, whose auxialiary system is a linear system, are investigated. The Lagrangian form of the equations of motion is derived. The Lagrangian variables are a triplet of "tau functions". The equations of motion for the Triplet of Tau functions are Three Trilinear equations. Simple solitons for the trilinear equations are given. Both the dispersion relation and the phase shift reflect the triplet structure of equations.
We introduce ultradiscrete tau functions associated with rigged configurations for A^{(1)}_n. They satisfy an ultradiscrete version of the Hirota bilinear equation and play a role analogous to a corner transfer matrix for the box-ball system. As an application, we establish a piecewise linear formula for the Kerov-Kirillov-Reshetikhin bijection in the combinatorial Bethe ansatz. They also lead to general N-soliton solutions of the box-ball system.
The DP equation is investigated from the point of view of determinant-pfaffian identities. The reciprocal link between the Degasperis-Procesi (DP) equation and the pseudo 3-reduction of the $C_{\infty}$ two-dimensional Toda system is used to construct the N-soliton solution of the DP equation. The N-soliton solution of the DP equation is presented in the form of pfaffian through a hodograph (reciprocal) transformation. The bilinear equations, the identities between determinants and pfaffians, and the $τ$-functions of the DP equation are obtained from the pseudo 3-reduction of the $C_{\infty}$ …
We investigate soliton solutions of the Toda hierarchy on a quasi-periodic finite-gap background by means of the double commutation method and the inverse scattering transform. In particular, we compute the phase shift caused by a soliton on a quasi-periodic finite-gap background. Furthermore, we consider short range perturbations via scattering theory. We give a full description of the effect of the double commutation method on the scattering data and establish the inverse scattering transform in this setting.
For a class of generalized integrable hierarchies associated with affine (twisted or untwisted) Kac-Moody algebras, an explicit representation of their local conserved densities by means of a single scalar tau-function is deduced. This tau-function acts as a partition function for the conserved densities, which fits its potential interpretation as the effective action of some quantum system. The class consists of multi-component generalizations of the Drinfel'd-Sokolov and the two-dimensional affine Toda lattice hierarchies. The relationship between the former and the approach of Feigin, Frenk…
General soliton solutions to a nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with PT-symmetry for both zero and nonzero boundary conditions {are considered} via the combination of Hirota's bilinear method and the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy reduction method. First, general $N$-soliton solutions with zero boundary conditions are constructed. Starting from the tau functions of the two-component KP hierarchy, it is shown that they can be expressed in terms of either Gramian or double Wronskian determinants. On the contrary, from the tau functions of single component KP hierarchy, genera…
This paper extends the results of the previous paper designated I hereafter in which the one- and two-soiton solutions of the Degasperis-Procesi(DP) equation were obtained and their peakon limit was considered. Here, we present the general N-soliton solution of the DP equation and investigate its property. We show that it has a novel structure expressed by a parametric representation in terms of the BKP tau-functions. A purely algebraic proof of the solution is given by establishing various identities among the tau-functions. The large time asymptotic of the solution recovers the formula for t…
A classical way to introduce tau functions for integrable hierarchies of solitonic equations is by means of the Sato-Segal-Wilson infinite-dimensional Grassmannian. Every point in the Grassmannian is naturally related to a Riemann-Hilbert problem on the unit circle, for which Bertola proposed a tau function that generalizes the Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno tau function for isomonodromic deformation problems. In this paper, we prove that the Sato-Segal-Wilson tau function and the (generalized) Jimbo-Miwa-Ueno isomonodromy tau function coincide under a very general setting, by identifying each of them to the…
Rarefactive waves and dispersive shock waves are generated from the step-like initial data in many nonlinear evolution equations including the classical example of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. When a solitary wave is injected on the step-like initial data, it is either transmitted over the background or trapped in the rarefactive wave. We show that the transmitted soliton can be obtained by using the Darboux transformation for the KdV equation. On the other hand, no trapped soliton can be obtained by using the Darboux transformation and we show with numerical simulations that the trap…
An application of the Darboux transformation on a cnoidal wave background in the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation gives a new solution which describes a soliton moving on a cnoidal wave. This is a generalized version of the previously known soliton solutions of dark-bright pair. Here a dark soliton resides on a cnoidal wave instead of on a constant background. It also exhibits a new types of soliton solution in a self-focusing medium, which describes a breakup of a generalized dark-bright pair into another generalized dark-bright pair and an "oscillating" soliton. We calculate the shift …
We investigate the algebraic conditions the scattering data of short-range perturbations of quasi-periodic finite-gap Jacobi operators have to satisfy. As our main result we provide the Poisson-Jensen-type formula for the transmission coefficient in terms of Abelian integrals on the underlying hyperelliptic Riemann surface and give an explicit condition for its single-valuedness. In addition, we establish trace formulas which relate the scattering data to the conserved quantities in this case.
The method of Darboux transformation, which is applied on cnoidal wave solutions of the sine-Gordon equation, gives solitons moving on a cnoidal wave background. Interesting characteristics of the solution, i.e., the velocity of solitons and the shift of crests of cnoidal waves along a soliton, are calculated. Solutions are classified into three types (Type-1A, Type-1B, Type-2) according to their apparent distinct properties.
The generating function of cubic Hodge integrals satisfying the local Calabi-Yau condition is conjectured to be a tau function of a new integrable system which can be regarded as a fractional generalization of the Volterra lattice hierarchy, so we name it the fractional Volterra hierarchy. In this paper, we give the definition of this integrable hierarchy in terms of Lax pair and Hamiltonian formalisms, construct its tau functions, and present its multi-soliton solutions.
In this letter, via the Darboux transformation method we construct new analytic soliton solutions for the Sasa-Satsuma equation which describes the femtosecond pulses propagation in a monomode fiber. We reveal that two different types of femtosecond solitons, i.e., the anti-dark (AD) and Mexican-hat (MH) solitons, can form on a continuous wave (CW) background, and numerically study their stability under small initial perturbations. Different from the common bright and dark solitons, the AD and MH solitons can exhibit both the resonant and elastic interactions, as well as various partially/comp…
We show that $(1+2)$ nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation with negative coupling admits an exact solution which appears to be the linear superposition of the plane wave and the nonsingular rational soliton.

We construct a fermion system in a multi-kink-antikink soliton background, and present in an explicit form all its trapped configurations (bound state solutions) as well as scattering states. This is achieved by exploiting an exotic N=4 centrally extended nonlinear supersymmetry of completely isospectral pairs of reflectionless Schrodinger systems with potentials to be n-soliton solutions for the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The obtained reflectionless Dirac system with a position-dependent mass is shown to possess its own exotic nonlinear supersymmetry associated with the matrix Lax-Novikov op…

By applying Darboux-Crum transformations to a Lax pair formulation of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, we construct new sets of multi-soliton solutions to it as well as to the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation. The obtained solutions exhibit a chiral asymmetry in propagation of different types of defects in crystalline backgrounds. We show that the KdV solitons of pulse and compression modulation types, which support bound states in semi-infinite and finite forbidden bands in the spectrum of the perturbed quantum one-gap Lame system, propagate in opposite directions with respect …
We consider certain boundary conditions supporting soliton solutions in the generalized non-linear Schrödinger equation (AKNS). Using the dressing transformation (DT) method and the related tau functions we study the AKNS$_{r}$ system for the vanishing, (constant) non-vanishing and the mixed boundary conditions, and their associated bright, dark and bright-dark N-soliton solutions, respectively. Moreover, we introduce a modified DT related to the dressing group in order to consider the free field boundary condition and derive generalized N-dark-dark solitons. We have shown that two$-$dark$-$da…
We study symmetric and asymmetric optical multi-peak solitons on a continuous wave background in the femtosecond regime of a single-mode fiber. Key characteristics of such multi-peak solitons, as the formation mechanism, propagation stability, and shape-changing collisions, are revealed in detail. Our results show that this multi-peak (symmetric or asymmetric) mode could be regarded as a single pulse formed by a nonlinear superposition of a periodic wave and a single-peak (W-shaped or antidark) soliton. In particular, a phase diagram for different types of nonlinear excitations on a continuous…
The construction of the master T-operator recently suggested in Alexandrov et al. (arXiv:1112.3310) is applied to integrable vertex models and associated quantum spin chains with trigonometric R-matrices. The master T-operator is a generating function for commuting transfer matrices of integrable vertex models depending on infinitely many parameters. At the same time it turns out to be the tau-function of an integrable hierarchy of classical soliton equations in the sense that it satisfies the the same bilinear Hirota equations. The class of solutions of the Hirota equations that correspond to…
We formulate the inverse scattering transform for the scalar Maxwell-Bloch system of equations describing the resonant interaction of light and active optical media in the case when the light intensity does not vanish at infinity. We show that pure background states in general do not exist with a nonzero background field. We then use the formalism to compute explicitly the soliton solutions of this system. We discuss the initial population of atoms and show that the pure soliton solutions do not correspond to a pure state initially. We obtain a representation for the soliton solutions in deter…
Rogue waves in (2+1)-dimensional three-wave resonant interactions are studied. General rogue waves arising from a constant background, from a lump-soliton background and from a dark-soliton background have been derived, and their dynamics illustrated. For rogue waves arising from a constant background, fundamental rogue waves are line-shaped, and multi-rogue waves exhibit multiple intersecting lines. Higher-order rogue waves could also be line-shaped, but they exhibit multiple parallel lines. For rogue waves arising from a lump-soliton background, they could exhibit distinctive patterns due to…
We characterize the soliton solutions and their interactions for a system of coupled evolution equations of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) type that models the dynamics in one-dimensional repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates with spin one, taking advantage of the representation of such model as a special reduction of a 2 x 2 matrix NLS system. Specifically, we study in detail the case in which solutions tend to a non-zero background at space infinities. First we derive a compact representation for the multi-soliton solutions in the system using the Inverse Scattering Transform (IST). We introduce …
The multi-soliton solution of the sine-Gordon equation in the presence of elliptic-function background is derived by the inverse scattering method. The key tool in our formulation is the Lax pair written by $4\times4$ matrix differential operators given by Takhtadzhyan and Faddeev in 1974, which enables us to use the conventional form of the integral representation of the Jost solutions and Krichever's theory of commuting differential operators. As a by-product we also provide generalized orthogonality and completeness relations for eigenfunctions associated with indefinite inner product. The …
General higher order rogue waves of a vector nonlinear Schrodinger equation (Manakov system) are derived using a Darboux-dressing transformation with an asymptotic expansion method. The Nth order semi-rational solutions containing 3N free parameters are expressed in separation of variables form. These solutions exhibit rogue waves on a multisoliton background. They demonstrate that the structure of rogue waves in this two-component system is richer than that in a one-component system. The study of our results would be of much importance in understanding and predicting rogue wave phenomena aris…
We present a general classification of one-soliton solutions as well as novel families of rogue-wave solutions for $F=1$ spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). These solutions are obtained from the inverse scattering transform for a focusing matrix nonlinear Schrödinger equation which models condensates in the case of attractive mean field interactions and ferromagnetic spin-exchange interactions. In particular, we show that, when no background is present, all one-soliton solutions are reducible via unitary transformations to a combination of oppositely-polarized solitonic solutions of singl…
We consider Novikov's Camassa-Holm type equation with cubic nonlinearity. In particular, we present a compact parametric representation of the smooth bright multisolution solutions on a constant background and investigate their structure. We find that the tau-functions associated with the solutions are closely related to those of a model equation for shallow-water waves (SWW) introduced by Hirota and Satsuma. This novel feature is established by applying the reciprocal transformation to the Novikov equation. We also show by specifying a complex phase parameter that the smooth soliton is conver…
We consider the Cauchy problem for the defocusing Schr$\ddot{\text{o}}$dinger (NLS) equation with a nonzero background $$\begin{align} &iq_t+q_{xx}-2(|q|^2-1)q=0, \nonumber\\ &q(x,0)=q_0(x), \quad \lim_{x \to \pm \infty}q_0(x)=\pm 1. \end{align}$$ Recently, for the space-time region $|x/(2t)|<1$ which is a solitonic region without stationary phase points on the jump contour, Cuccagna and Jenkins presented the asymptotic stability of the $N$-soliton solutions for the NLS equation by using the $\bar{\partial}$ generalization of the Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method. Their large-time a…
Using the matrix Riemann-Hilbert factorization approach for nonlinear evolution systems which take the form of Lax-pair isospectral deformations and whose corresponding Lax operators contain both discrete and continuous spectra, the leading-order asymptotics as $t \to \pm \infty$ of the solution to the Cauchy problem for the modified nonlinear Schrödinger equation, $i \partial_{t} u + {1/2} \partial_{x}^{2} u + | u |^{2} u + i s \partial_{x} (| u |^{2} u) = 0$, $s \in \Bbb R_{>0}$, which is a model for nonlinear pulse propagation in optical fibers in the subpicosecond time scale, are obtained:…
We present exact N-soliton optical pulses riding on a continuous-wave (c.w.) beam that propagate through and interact with a two-level active optical medium. Their representation is derived via an appropriate generalization of the inverse scattering transform for the corresponding Maxwell-Bloch equations. We describe the single-soliton solutions in detail and classify them into several distinct families. In addition to the analogues of traveling-wave soliton pulses that arise in the absence of a c.w. beam, we obtain breather-like structures, periodic pulse-trains and rogue-wave-type (i.e., rat…
