We perform density functional theory (DFT) calculations of five solid phases and the liquid phase of tin. The calculations include cold curves of the five solid phases, phonon calculations in the quasi-harmonic approximation over a range of volumes for each solid phase, and DFT-based molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) calculations of the liquid phase. Using the DFT results, we construct a tabular multiphase SESAME equation of state for tin, referred to as SESAME 2162. Comparisons to experimental data are made and show a high level of agreement in isobaric data, isothermal data, shock data, and phase boundary measurements, including measurements of the melt curve. The 2162 EOS will be useful for hydrodynamics simulations and has been designed with an eye toward hydrodynamics simulations that incorporate materials strength models and allow for modeling of the kinetics of phase transitions.
We present a new multiphase-field theory for describing pattern formation in multi-domain and/or multi-component systems. The construction of the free energy functional and the dynamic equations is based on criteria that ensure mathematical and physical consistency. We first analyze previous multiphase-field theories, and identify their advantageous and disadvantageous features. On the basis of this analysis, we introduce a new way of constructing the free energy surface, and derive a generalized multiphase description for arbitrary number of phases (or domains). The presented approach retains…
At ambient pressure tin transforms from its ground-state semi-metal $α$-Sn (diamond structure) phase to the compact metallic $β$-Sn phase at 13$^\circ$C (286K). There may be a further transition to the simple hexagonal $γ$-Sn above 450K. These relatively low transition temperatures are due to the small energy differences between the structures, $\approx 20$\,meV/atom between $α$- and $β$-Sn. This makes tin an exceptionally sensitive test of the accuracy of density functionals and computational methods. Here we use the high-throughput Automatic-FLOW (AFLOW) method to study the energetics of tin…
Titanium nitride halides, TiNX (X = F, Cl, Br, I) in the α-phase (orthorhombic) are exciting quasi two-dimensional (2D) electronic systems exhibiting a fascinating series of electronic ground states under different conditions. Pristine TiNX are semiconductors with varying energy gaps and possess attractive properties for potential applications in the fields of optoelectronics, photovoltaics, and thermoelectrics. Alkali metal intercalated TiNCl becomes superconducting at reasonably high temperature in the α-phase. We have revisited the electronic band structure of these compounds using density …
The ground state energies of Ag and Au in the face-centered cubic (FCC), body-centered cubic (BCC), simple cubic (SC) and the hypothetical diamond-like phase, and dimer were calculated as a function of bond length using density functional theory (DFT). These energies were then used to parameterize the many-body Gupta potential for Ag and Au. This parameterization over several phases of Ag and Au was performed to guarantee transferability of the potentials and to make them appropriate for studies of related nanostructures. Depending on the structure, the energetics of the surface atoms play a c…
The lattice dynamics of the metallic tin β and γ polymorphs has been studied by a combination of diffuse scattering, inelastic x-ray scattering and density functional perturbation theory. The non-symmorphic space group of the β-tin structure results in unusual asymmetry of thermal diffuse scattering. Strong resemblance of the diffuse scattering intensity distribution in β and γ-tin were observed, reflecting the structural relationship between the two phases and revealing the qualitative similarity of the underlying electronic potential. The strong influence of the electron subsystem on inter-i…

The structural, elastic and electronic properties of two-dimensional (2D) titanium carbide/nitride based pristine (Tin+1Cn/Tin+1Nn) and functionalized MXenes (Tin+1CnT2/Tin+1NnT2, T stands for the terminal groups: -F, -O and -OH, n = 1, 2, 3) are investigated by density functional theory calculations. Carbide-based MXenes possess larger lattice constants and monolayer thicknesses than nitride-based MXenes. The in-plane Young's moduli of Tin+1Nn are larger than those of Tin+1Cn, whereas in both systems they decrease with the increase of the monolayer thickness. Cohesive energy calculations indi…
We present novel non-parametric representation math for local pseudopotentials (PP) based on Gaussian Process Regression (GPR). Local pseudopotentials are needed for materials simulations using Orbital-Free Density Functional Theory (OF-DFT) to reduce computational cost and to allow kinetic energy functional (KEF) application only to the valence density. Moreover, local PPs are important for the development of accurate KEFs for OF-DFT as they are only available for a limited number of elements. We optimize local PPs of tin (Sn) using GP regression to reproduce the experimental lattice constant…
We present a novel phase-field model development capability in the open source MOOSE finite element framework. This facility is based on the 'modular free energy' approach in which the phase-field equations are implemented in a general form that is logically separated from model-specific data such as the thermodynamic free energy density and mobility functions. Free energy terms contributing to a phase-field model are abstracted into self-contained objects that can be dynamically combined at simulation run time. Combining multiple chemical and mechanical free energy contributions expedites the…
The transition temperature between the low-temperature alpha phase of tin to beta tin is close to the room temperature (Tab =13C), and the difference in cohesive energy of the two phases at 0 K of about dEcoh=0.02 eV/atom is at the limit of the accuracy of DFT (density functional theory) with available exchange-correlation functionals. It is however critically important to model the relative phase energies correctly for any reasonable description of phenomena and technologies involving these phases, for example, the performance of tin electrodes in electrochemical batteries. Here, we show that…
We investigate the pressure-induced metal-insulator transition from diamond to beta-tin in bulk Silicon, using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) and density functional theory (DFT) approaches. We show that it is possible to efficiently describe many-body effects, using a variational wave function with an optimized Jastrow factor and a Slater determinant. Variational results are obtained with a small computational cost and are further improved by performing diffusion Monte Carlo calculations and an explicit optimization of molecular orbitals in the determinant. Finite temperature corrections and zero p…
A series of density functional theory (DFT) simulations was performed to investigate the approach, contact, and subsequent separation of two atomically flat surfaces consisting of different materials. Aluminum (Al) and titanium nitride (TiN) slabs were chosen as a model system representing a metal-ceramic interface and the interaction between soft and hard materials. The approach and separation were simulated by moving one slab in discrete steps normal to the surfaces allowing for electronic and atomic relaxations after each step. Various configurations were analyzed by considering (001), (011…
An assessment of the Sn unary system is presented. First, the literature on phase equilibria, the thermodynamic properties, the volume and related properties, and shock compression of tin is thoroughly reviewed. Second, the Sn system is investigated by means of synchrotron X-ray diffraction in a diamond-anvil cell up to pressures and temperatures of 57 GPa and 730 K. New information is obtained on the thermal stability and thermal expansion coefficient of the γ (I4/mmm) and γ" (Im-3 m) phases. Third, density functional theory calculations are conducted on the six allotropic phases of tin obser…
Multiphase transport and compositional mixing mechanisms in twin-wire laser directed energy deposition: toward process stability and graded material fabrication
SnxSey crystalline compounds consisting of Sn and Se atoms of varying composition are systematically investigated at pressures from 0 to 100 GPa using the first-principles evolutionary crystal structure search method based on density functional theory (DFT). All known experimental phases of SnSe and SnSe2 are found without any prior input. A second order polymorphic phase transition from SnSe-Pnma phase to SnSe-Cmcm phase is predicted at 2.5 GPa. Initially being semiconducting, this phase becomes metallic at 7.3 GPa. Upon further increase of pressure up to 36.6 GPa, SnSe-Cmcm phase is transfor…
The effect of monolayers of oxygen (O) and hydrogen (H) on the possibility of material transfer at aluminium/titanium nitride (Al/TiN) and copper/diamond (Cu/C$_{\text{dia}}$) interfaces, respectively, were investigated within the framework of density functional theory (DFT). To this end the approach, contact, and subsequent separation of two atomically flat surfaces consisting of the aforementioned pairs of materials were simulated. These calculations were performed for the clean as well as oxygenated and hydrogenated Al and C$_{\text{dia}}$ surfaces, respectively. Various contact configurati…
We present a 5-phase equation of state (EOS) for elemental carbon. The phases considered are: diamond, BC8, simple-cubic, simple-hexagonal, and the liquid/plasma state. The solid phase free energies are constrained by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Vibrational contributions to the free energy of each solid phase are treated within the quasiharmonic framework. The liquid free energy model is constrained by fitting to a combination of DFT molecular dynamics performed over the range 10,000 K < T < 100,000 K, and path integral quantum Monte Carlo calculations for T > 100,000 K (both…

The electronic properties of monolayer tin dulsulphide (ML-SnS2), a recently synthesized metal dichalcogenide, are studied by a combination of first-principles calculations and tight-binding (TB) approximation. An effective lattice Hamiltonian based on six hybrid sp-like orbitals with trigonal rotation symmetry are proposed to calculate the band structure and density of states for ML-SnS2, which demonstrates good quantitative agreement with relativistic density functional theory calculations in a wide energy range. We show that the proposed TB model can be easily applied to the case of an exte…
$α$-Sn (gray tin) is a group-IV, zero-gap semiconductor with potential use in infrared detectors, necessitating a clear understanding of its dielectric properties. We report the first-principles calculations of the band structure and dielectric function of $α$-Sn using density functional theory, emphasizing the effects of strain, spin-orbit interaction, and pseudo-potentials on the electronic and optical properties of $α$-Sn in the infrared region (photon energy $<$ 1eV). In $α$-Sn, spin-orbit coupling greatly influences the electronic band structure that leads to unusual optical behavior. We …

Tin-chalcogenides SnX (X = Te, Se and S) have been arousing research interest due to their thermoelectric physical properties. The two-dimensional (2D) counterparts, which are expected to enhance the property, nevertheless, have not been fully explored because of many possible structures. Generating variable composition of 2D Sn$_{1-x}$X$_{x}$ systems (X = Te, Se and S) has been performed using global searching method based on evolutionary algorithm combining with density functional calculations. A new hexagonal phase named by $β'$-SnX is found by Universal Structure Predictor Evolutionary Xta…
The melting point of silicon in the cubic diamond phase is calculated using the random phase approximation (RPA). The RPA includes exact exchange as well as an approximate treatment of local as well as non-local many body correlation effects of the electrons. We predict a melting temperature of about 1735 K and 1640 K without and with core polarization effects, respectively. Both values are within 3 % of the experimental melting temperature of 1687 K. In comparison, the commonly used gradient approximation to density functional theory predicts a melting point that is 200 K too low, and hybrid …
Internal energies, enthalpies, phonon dispersion curves, and superconductivity of atomic metallic hydrogen are calculated. The (standard) use pseudopotentials in density-functional theory are compared with full (Coulomb)-potential all-electron linear muffin-tin orbital calculations. Quantitatively similar results are found as far as internal energies are concerned. Larger differences are found for phase-transition pressures; significant enough to affect the phase diagram. Electron--phonon spectral functions $α^2 F(ω)$ also show significant differences. Against expectation, the estimated superc…
The pressure-induced structural phase transition from diamond to beta-tin in silicon is an excellent test for theoretical total energy methods. The transition pressure provides a sensitive measure of small relative energy changes between the two phases (one a semiconductor and the other a semimetal). Experimentally, the transition pressure is well characterized. Density-functional results have been unsatisfactory. Even the generally much more accurate diffusion Monte Carlo method has shown a noticeable fixed-node error. We use the recently developed phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carl…
Ab initio-calculated ideal strength and toughness describe the upper limits for mechanical properties attainable in real systems and can, therefore, be used in selection criteria for materials design. We employ density-functional ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) to investigate the mechanical properties of defect-free rocksalt-structure (B1) TiN and B1 Ti1-xAlxN (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) solid solutions subject to [001], [110], and [111] tensile deformation at room temperature. We determine the alloys' ideal strength and toughness, elastic responses, and ability to plastically deform up to fract…
We report results from a fast, efficient, and first-principles full-potential N$^{th}$-order muffin-tin orbital (FP-NMTO) method combined with van Leeuwen-Baerends correction to local density exchange-correlation potential. We show that more complete and compact basis set is critical in improving the electronic and structural properties. We exemplify the self-consistent FP-NMTO calculations on group IV and III-V semiconductors. Notably, predicted bandgaps, lattice constants, and bulk moduli are in good agreement with experiments (e.g., we find for Ge $0.86~e$V, $5.57$~Å, $75$~GPa vs. measured …
Using a combination of experimental techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the influence of lithium insertion on the electronic and electrochemical properties of fluourine-doped SnO$_2$ (FTO) is assessed. For this purpose, we investigate the electrochromic behavior of commercial FTO electrode embedded in a solution of lithium perclorate (LiClO$_4$). The electrochromic properties are evaluated by UV-VIS spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and chronoamperometry. These tests show that FTO exhibits electrochromism with a respectable coloration efficiency ($η=47.9$ cm$^2$/C @ 63…
We have performed high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on trigonal tellurium consisting of helical chains in the crystal. Through the band-structure mapping in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone, we found a definitive evidence for the band splitting originating from the chiral nature of crystal. A direct comparison of the band dispersion between the ARPES results and the first-principles band-structure calculations suggests the presence of Weyl nodes and tiny spin-polarized hole pockets around the H point. The present result opens a pathway toward studying the in…

We discuss several aspects of the computational method, including the form of the governing equations, details of the numerical implementation, as well as its conv…
